About Us Baker and Bloom is an education center where young people are immersed in academic rigor, creative thinking, and intellectual curiosity. Ages 5-6 inspirED Reader & Writer: The Magic of Pixar Films It’s hard to be self-reflective, especially at the age of 5 or 6. The Pixar universe provides a gateway into the the growing mind, with wonderful storytelling to boot. In this course, students watch excerpts from Wall-E, Inside Out, and short films, using them as springboards for reflective writing activities.

They consider the importance of design objectives, write short compositions to explain their use of technology, and print a 3D model of their home, complete with a full design proposal.

US Boarding School Application Essay Writing Bootcamp In this course, students kickstart their boarding school application essay. Ages 15-18 US College Application Essay Writing Bootcamp Join Collegewise counselor (and former Ivy League admissions officer) Meredith Graham for a week-long workshop on writing essays for American university applications. We’ll delve into the different types of essays and the critical components of each, and Meredith will personally assist each student in brainstorming appropriate topics for the Common App essay. This is the centerpiece of a successful application, and as a highly experienced essay reader, Meredith will provide an insider’s advice through seminars, analysis, and individual feedback on essays and supplements throughout the week. Instead of working alone without a clear direction, students will have the support of an expert, the motivation of working with peers, and a structured approach to crafting a standout essay. By the end of the week, students will have strong or final drafts of the main Common App essay as well as 2-3 supplemental essays.

For those who are not applying this year, this workshop will be an illuminating introduction that will give you a head start and a chance to hone your personal writing skills. You are also welcome to apply what you learn to summer school application essays instead of the Common Application.

Teachers Renée Boey Founder and Educational Director Renee Boey founded Baker & Bloom to promote innovative learning, service, and leadership among young people. Baker & Bloom’s mission is shaped by Renee’s own educational journey. She enjoyed learning at both local and international schools in Hong Kong before completing her secondary education at St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H. The school’s diversity and emphasis on arts, humanities, and service instilled in her an appreciation for creativity, thinking from multiple perspectives, and a desire to lead a meaningful life. After graduating from Harvard College as an English major, Renée obtained an MPhil in Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, and returned to Hong Kong. She completed a teaching internship at St. Paul’s Co-Educational College, received her Postgraduate Diploma in Education at the University of Hong Kong, and taught as ISF Academy as an IB English and Humanities teacher before harnessing her experiences and passions to launch Baker & Bloom. Whether it is teaching the inspirED Social Entrepreneurship Program, designing curriculum, or coaching a student, Renee hopes to inspire young people to learn with joy and embrace life with positivity and creative confidence.

Carlos Soto Primary Program Head Carlos’s intellectual curiosity was first sparked at Cleveland Humanities Magnet, a California school specializing in humanities-based education. After earning an undergraduate degree in Mass Communications at UC Berkeley, Carlos worked in schools with students with special learning needs and then spent eight years in the non-profit educational sector, serving students from low-income families. Before moving to Hong Kong, he earned a Master’s in Education at San Francisco State University. Most recently, he completed his doctoral studies in Education at the University of Hong Kong, where his research, publications, and activities in the community brought him an award for Outstanding Postgraduate Student.

Mei Chen STEM Program Director Mei is an accomplished scientist and engineer who has worked in both private and public sectors. With over a decade of experience working for Microsoft, Procter & Gamble, Accenture Consulting, and Lockheed Martin, Mei understands real-world applications of science, math, and technology, and makes them exciting to students. Mei first discovered the joy of teaching at the Los Angeles Children's Museum before completing her BS degree in Computer Science at UCLA. She continued her education at Carnegie Mellon University, graduating with a 4.0 GPA in Software Engineering & Management.

Then, she taught K-12 Discover-Engineering classes in San Jose, California. In 2009, she moved to Hong Kong and contributed to NPOs, such as U-Hear ts and Society for Community Organization. Mei joined Baker & Bloom in 2014 and has taught IB science as well as 3D modeling, robotics, and design.

Chris Coetzee Teacher Chris completed undergraduate degrees in Music and Classics at Stellenbosch University. He followed this with two postgraduate degrees in Classical Literature and a PGCE, qualifying as a certified high school teacher for Latin, English, Music, and History. He has taught internationally in South Africa, the USA, Germany, South Korea, and Hong Kong. Apart from teaching, he has also worked as department head, head of senior academics, pedagogy workshop leader, and educational inspector. He has worked with a wide variety of national and international curricula, including the IB, IGCSE, A-Levels, Pre-U, AP, and the South African and South Korean national systems. He has also written three books that have been published internationally.

Celene Chang Teacher Celene received a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and Applied Sciences from Caltech and earned an MBA and MS in Engineering from Stanford. Additionally, she completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Education at the University of Hong Kong. She has taught English, Humanities, Math and Physics, and has run drama and debate workshops in schools including St. Paul’s Co-educational College, St. Mark’s School, and Ho Lap College. At Elsa High School, she pioneered the school’s IB Diploma-level Physics program, and all of her students achieved the top grade (7) in their exams. In recent years, she trained in Shakespearean acting in London at the Globe Theatre, summited the highest peaks in Africa, Europe, and Australia, and trekked in the Himalayas in Nepal, her favorite country in the world.

Jay Poon Teacher An avid reader, writer, and moviegoer, Jay looks to ignite creativity in students through the use of media and the practice of self-reflection. Jay studied at Diocesan Boys' School before pursuing the IB Diploma at Shatin College. Fascinated by the different modes of learning in those two institutions, he realized students need to discover their own learning paths. Since completing his undergraduate degree in History at University College London, he has tutored students across Hong Kong in IGCSE and IB English, History, and, Film. His efforts to foster individuality have helped students reach important milestones, from discovering their first favorite author to gaining admission to top boarding schools.

Karen Kwok Admissions Counselor Karen was attending The Taft School in Watertown, C.T. when she first developed a passion for mentoring young children through her volunteer work. It was also at Taft that Karen learned how to structure her ideas in writing; a skill she has since carried with her through her years at school and in her professional life. After graduating cum laude from Taft, Karen earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Harvard College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. While at Harvard, Karen started helping family and friends proofread their personal statements for boarding school, college, and graduate school applications. Her work evolved from correcting grammatical errors to larger restructuring of big ideas in essays. At Baker & Bloom, she hopes to make a difference in students’ lives and enable them to realize their goals and potential.
