Target Net Zero

We are all aware that the food packaging industry has a responsibility to its customers and stakeholders to reduce its environmental impact.

National Flexible believe that this is not only in supplying packaging that can help reduce CO2 but that we need to work in a sustainable manner along with our other social and environmental responsibilities. To this end, we are, wherever possible, developing our working practices to enable us to improve our business management in these areas.

In 2021 we helped our customers reduce their carbon footprint by 1,010 tonnes CO2 through packaging reduction, plastic reduction, emission free printing and carbon neutrality. This is equivalent to 2.5 million car miles or 774 long haul flights.

We have reduced our own carbon footprint by 709 tonnes CO2 through initiatives like the installation of solar panels, creating a Climate Positive Workforce and tree planting. This is equivalent to 1.8 million car miles or 543 long haul flights.

In total last year we saved 1,719 tonnes CO2

We have also successfully gained ISO 14001 which is the international standard that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system (EMS). www.nationalflexible.co.uk

Vivid unveils new VeloTaper taping system

T he VeloBlade range of digital die-cutting systems can now be equipped with an innovative new automatic tape applicator – the VeloTaper!

The VeloTaper is a fully automated flatbed taping system that applies double-sided tape accurately onto a variety of media and or substrates automatically in the designated spots. This means the finished cut and creased product is immediately ready for assembling.

Sales and product manager, Lewis Evans, said, “A few scenarios require doublesided tape to be laid onto sheet or roll materials to allow for later assembly or fixing. Traditionally this would be a manual and time-consuming task, and

one that is subject to the inconsistencies typical of manual positioning.

“The VeloTaper automated flatbed taping system makes light work of this task and taping can be performed at the same time as other processes such as cutting and creasing, for ready-to-assemble displays for Evans added, “The tape applicator is capable of automatically cutting, creasing and placing a range of doublesided tapes up to 22mm in width precisely along the X and Y axis all in one pass.

Freeing up your operator to complete other work.”

The VeloTaper is an optional extra that can be purchased separately to the Veloblade Volta+ models and is fully integrated with the latest versions of Vivid’s Zip Core software. Existing Veloblade users will require a Vivid engineer to attend to install the tape applicator onto their system. Customers should contact Vivid for pricing details.

Vivid will be exhibiting at The Print Show on the 20-22 September on Stand C05, where they will be demonstrating the new VeloTaper automated flatbed taping system alongside its other products and services. www.vivid-online.com

On a Roll! Printed laminate containing over 30% PCR content

Cake Décor is the UK’s largest manufacturer of cake decorations, producing extensive ranges for Plant Bakeries, Blue Chip Food Manufacturers, Artisan Businesses and Major UK Supermarkets.

They were founded in 2006, owned by Orkla since April 2021 and have built a strong reputation for quality product and the highest customer service. They have a ‘right first time’ approach to NPD and have innovation at their very core, so when Waitrose wanted to change to printed film for their Ready to Roll Icing it was an easy discussion to have to suggest changing from a traditional laminate to one with post-consumer recyclate to beat the Plastic Tax being introduced in April.

According to the Government website, the new tax is being introduced to “encourage the use of recycled rather than new plastic within plastic packaging. This will in turn stimulate increased levels of recycling and collection of plastic waste, diverting it away from landfill or incineration.”

“Moving to a PCR film was made easy by working with National Flexible. It ran first time on our packing lines and both we and Waitrose are very happy with the result,” said Robert Simpson, Cake Décor.

Rising star seeks partners

Rise n Design

resin artist Amy Finch seeks retail stockists, galleries and commissions for her stunning creations.

Within one year, Amy has become a rapidly rising star whose work is fashionable, collectable and affordable. Her Rise n Design brand has won multiple awards –including being a winner of Small Business Sunday, run by Dragon’s Den’s Theo Paphitis – and is now a resident artist at The Pier Road Coffee & Art gallery in Littlehampton.

As well as creating the luxurious look of marble, Amy creates aquatic artwork inspired by the deep blues of the oceans and foaming white waves as they lap golden sands. From wall art to trays, clocks to coasters, Rise n Design both creates original works and upscales items to give them a new lease of life. Each piece is meticulously created in resin – so each piece is unique. No two are ever the same – there is no digital printing, no reproduction it’s created entirely by hand.

“I did my first ever trade event at BTCF in Harrogate,” said Amy. “I loved it and I’m delighted I’ve been chosen as one of the fair’s top exhibitors. I’ll be back at BTCF’s Harrogate and Sandown fairs in 2023.”

The style of weaving is based on the gneiss rock formations which can be found on the Scottish islands with different sized bands of colour imitating nature's natural beauty. Due to the material the rugs are made from, each rug is extremely hard wearing as well as being soft underfoot.

The rugs weigh around 3kg and are therefore dense and sumptuous. The colours are amazing, as is the complexity of the material. Each rug is individually made and no two are the same.

We are now also able to offer a bespoke service. If interested, please contact Keith Barber via our website – www.gneissrugs.com

LollaMac

Based in rural Northumberland, Clare Edwin is the designer and maker behind jewellery brand LollaMac. She specialises in sterling silver and mixed metal jewellery, handcrafting each piece individually.

Formerly an engineer turned maths teacher, Clare came to jewellery making in 2016. She is largely self-taught, and takes great satisfaction in using traditional tools and techniques to create texture and form, thus transforming an unassuming piece of metal into wearable art.

The Northumbrian landscape surrounding her studio in the North Pennines provides Clare with much of her inspiration and lends itself perfectly to the earthy tones of the copper and brass which features so heavily in her work.

With its understated style and signature combinations of sterling silver, copper and brass, the LollaMac collection contains a range of pieces that can be easily mixed and matched for any occasion.

Nature’s healing energy

In this issue of Products and Services Review we are proud to announce that we have selected Botanica International Ltd as our Natural Products Provider of the Month.

Established in 2005 by Sean Cooney, the company is based in Warrenpoint in Co.Down, and the original inspiration was to cater for the growing awareness of natural products in society, as well as to develop the wonders of Nature’s herbal energy. Botanica International Ltd has developed a multi-award winning product range combining amazing natural ingredients that have proven beneficial properties. All products can be used on both humans and animals, and as Sean stated, “Respect for nature is at the heart of everything that we do at Botanica.”

This wide range of products includes natural herbal creams, washes and sprays, and the products are made using a range of powerful plants provided by nature. Sean commented, “Our products are carefully prepared using combinations of herbs and soothing natural oils. We use Aloe Vera, Comfrey, Oil of Lavender and Tea Tree oil, as well as Neem Oil and even Cedar Wood, all of which have proven results for many skin conditions. These ingredients are contained in a specially formulated cream base with moisturising agents.”

Shin Yu Studio

Shin Yu Studio umbrellas the work of Designer/ Maker Paolo Moscardini that we can all learn from. The ethos behind his work is to ‘Repurpose, Reuse or Reinvent’ so that we both help the planet and put a smile back on people’s faces – piece by piece.

Paolo hand-makes beautiful jewellery from ‘broken or unloved objects’ as well as from ‘Repurposed’ Sterling Silver that comes with the back story provenance of what each piece is repurposed from – making each completely unique. This intelligent thinking reinforces the importance of reusing materials instead of throwing them into landfill and stop mining for more which adds large emissions to the environment.

Using fun and quirky messages Paolo also produces Gifts and Homeware with the added focus of ‘making people smile again'. His hand drawn Cards, Artwork and Jewellery stating ‘You are my Favourite Weirdo’ or ‘I love you to the moon and back – but you are a pain in the arse!’ connect perfectly with people’s hearts and emotions. You may not initially see the small details in each piece, but when you do they will have you smiling

From the outset, Botanica International Ltd believed that there is a different and better way to promote healthy balanced skin alongside nature, therefore, all its products are made from natural ingredients that are clinically tested to be safe and gentle on all skin types. There are no harmful chemicals, toxic ingredients or artificial colourants, as from the outset, the company found that nature provided the best solutions for these problems.

Over the past 15 years, Botanica International Ltd have developed a customer base across the world, enabling its products to be delivered worldwide. It is the only company in the western world selling herbal products to China and has ‘No.1 in the world’ on the Botanica packaging in China.

The company has also won a long list of awards for its products, and is especially proud to have been awarded the Royal Warrant. Botanica International and Sean Cooney Esq., have been granted The Royal Warrant By Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen, as suppliers of Natural Herbal Products as of March 31st 2022. They are the first Herbalists and one of only three companies in Ireland to be granted such a prestigious award. In recognition of the continued quality and excellence of their products, Royal Warrants are granted to companies or people who have regularly supplied goods or services to either the Queen or the Prince of Wales. Sean

commented, “The Royal Warrant is a great honour, as it is a recognition of our long-term focus on quality and excellence in the manufacture of natural herbal products.”

Botanica International Ltd has recently updated the fly spray which it produces. Botanica’s Fly Repellent is an all-natural spray with a unique formula and can be used on all animals, keeping them protected for longer. This new further improved formulation can be sprayed directly onto the skin and can be used all year round boasting 100% natural properties.

The company is very proud of the success of its products, but this success has not been achieved by chance. Sean stated, “We only send out proven products that actually work, we do not allow second rate products to bear the name Botanica. With Botanica’s sprays, creams and washes you are guaranteed the best results as we succeed where all others have failed!”

We are Christina and Gary Granger-Thompson, husband and wife team for our small Sheffield family-run jewellery business. We specialise in beautiful handmade chainmaille jewellery using precious and base metals, gemstones, glass and beads.

Our stunning pieces are based upon chain woven designs, predominantly made in silver and are often referred to as unusual, striking and stylish. We're proud to be makers of unique, high quality jewellery for men, women and children.

A little about us… I (Christina) have been working within the design industry since 2005 and trained in silversmithing around 12 years ago and I (Gary) am a former pharmaceutical chemist. Dreya Glass

The sea and its different moods have always been in my life. Especially its sound, which can be carried many miles inland on the wind; it is a constant background noise to life in Cornwall. The sea is all encompassing, its colour, sounds and smell, its reflections, translucent quality and constant movement can hold your attention like nothing else. To me glass has a similar quality to water – its colour, reflections and translucent quality instantly captured my heart and is the perfect medium to express water.

Here in the studio in Cornwall I make fused glass wall art depicting waves as well as a fish corals and seahorses. I also make an extremely popular range of present cards. A greeting card with a little handmade fused glass gift for them to untie and keep. Perfect for when you just want to send a little bit of extra love, and not cause any embarrassment.

Ayala Bar’s Classic Collection

With her new Classic Collection, Ayala Bar has recreated a theme expressing her 'collage like' visions within a variety of colour groups.

This season's line reveals a whole new effect, one of added sparkle & luminosity. It's a fresh look which has resulted, in part, from the use of new unique beads which benefit from a special coating.

The Classic Collection shows a great deal of detailed craftsmanship, revealing structures within a tapestry of magnificent colours. Although somewhat reminiscent of Ayala's earlier works, this colourful and dramatic line also projects the artist's current state of individuality.

ZSISKA jewellery is made of resin and can be combined with other high quality materials such as 24k gold leaf and pure silver leaf. ZSISKA’s style is bold, with resin as clear as glass and very light in weight. These developed techniques resulted in jewellery that is easy and very pleasant to wear!

We Love Seasons offers contemporary products for Valentines,

Easter, Halloween and Christmas

The latest collections feature decorations and gifts in designs inspired by the owners’ Scandinavian heritage. The owner Malene wanted to capture the essence of her family’s traditions at these special times of year. So often nowadays, we are buying decorations, which get thrown out each year, and so we don’t get the chance to create our own traditions.

We Love Seasons’ mission is to offer timeless decorations and gifts which can be used again and again, to help people form their own traditions over the years.

We Love Seasons continues to add more UK designed decorations, and is increasingly looking at non-plastic, sustainable and environmentally friendly ranges going forward. We have in 2022 added several products that are made out of wood, ceramics and paper.

The Haunted Halloween and Autumnal Décor collection has everything you need to bring a touch of the season into your shop or home. There are pumpkins, acorns, wreaths and garlands to decorate in autumnal colours; and metal buckets, a haunted house, and ceramic and metal characters for a Halloween evening of trick or treating.

HKD Ceramics

Handmade ceramics designed and created in East London. Modern and unique my products are inspired by patterns and colours and how they integrate into everyday life.

I have always wanted to create ceramic ware that brings happiness and enjoyment to peoples’ lives and homes, making them experience and appreciate the tactile and beauty of pottery.

I currently have three themes in my work:

Move into the Christmas season with decorations in red, green, white, gold and a touch of grey and brown from The Christmas Villa collection. You’ll find Father Christmas, gonks, stockings, snowmen, reindeers, Christmas trees and more to decorate your shop or home and plenty of baubles for the Christmas tree.

As Valentine’s Day approaches why not create a focal point with a tree adorned in heart garlands and hanging hearts or decorate the table with red hearts from the We Love Valentines collection?

At Easter time bring decorative eggs, chicks, bunnies and sheep into the shop or home. Choose from hanging eggs and bunnies for an Easter tree, décor to create an Easter table and adorn the home, Easter wreaths, garlands and more from the Magical Easter collection.

We Love Seasons’ beautiful collections are perfect for building festive memories and creating some magic with each holiday season. The goal is simple – We Love Seasons offers timeless products and gifts which can be used year after year to become family treasures.

Going above and beyond to ensure quality care

In this issue of Healthcare Matters, we have selected Solicitude Training as our Training Provider Company of the Month.

Solicitude Training is a provider of high quality, bespoke, cost-effective training and consultancy services, to the health and social care sector.

First started as a Sole Trader in 2011 before being converted to a limited company in 2013, Solicitude Training was established by Jenny Gibson, a Qualified nurse with over 30 years’ experience working within the health and social care sector.

Jenny is passionate about providing quality care, and is devoted to ensuring the person that benefits most is the recipient of the care.

“We provide training and consultancy to health and social care sector, which encompasses all the training for care homes (residential and nursing), domiciliary care, hospitals and local authorities, as well as first aid training in schools. We deliver bespoke, relevant, engaging training, to enhance care services and help service providers make a difference to the client’s life. We are a team of passionate trainers that all come from clinical backgrounds and therefore,

only have trainers teach in areas that they are experienced and competent in,” added Jenny Gibson, Director.

Solicitude Training offers healthcare courses, consultancy and E-learning and is a registered centre with Qualsafe, enabling the company to provide a full range of first aid qualifications.

Solicitude Training is committed to quality, and its team ensures it goes above and beyond just the standard course offering, to deliver bespoke training and consultancy services, that improve the quality of care for each individual client, and their needs.

Solicitude Training also offer training needs analysis, in which the company reviews the training that is undertaken in a service, to ensure that staff are trained to be able to meet the client’s needs that they support. From this, Solicitude Training is able to offer recommendations and help a service create and implement an annual training programme, to ensure staff

undertake the required training.

In addition to those services, Solicitude Training is able to provide a whole package solution through its sister company; Solicitude Care Management. Solicitude Care Management provides interim managers on short to medium term basis. A perfect solution while waiting for a new manager, covering long term sick or crisis management where they will support, guide and train staff to meet the 5 Key Lines of Enquiry (KLOEs) and all standards of the social care legislation to obtain compliance, until a replacement is hired.

Indeed, Solicitude Training’s commitment to quality is unwavering, and the company plans to continue building upon its outstanding services to further support clients. “We are a small company but have remained and achieved growth throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. We really believe that quality in care is paramount, and we do not restrict our services to the standard 9-5 hours as we are not a traditional training company. We are dedicated to meeting the needs

of our learners, so that if 9 o’clock on an evening is the best time for them, then that’s when we’ll do it!”

Jenny continued, “We want to encourage people to come and talk to us, to see how we can help. We are experiencing a period of significant growth and as we go forward, we are expanding our team and services to offer further training and support.”

PRESSURE ULCER MANAGEMENT COMPANY OF THE MONTH

Dedicated to the healing and maintenance of healthy skin

In this issue of Healthcare Matters, we are pleased to announce Sumed International (UK) Ltd as our Pressure Ulcer Management Company of the Month.

Sumed is a privately owned healthcare company that is dedicated to the healing and maintenance of healthy skin. Established in the 1970s, Sumed has over 40 years’ experience in pressure area care, working closely with clinicians and carers to promote pressure relieving solutions and improve patients’ quality of life.

Over the years, Sumed has added a strong brand portfolio and represents some of the most reputable companies around the world. In 2006, Graham Collyer became the Executive Chairman, implementing a restructuring programme that elevated the company to reach higher standards of best practice and become a stronger global player in the healthcare industry.

With headquarters in Glossop, Derbyshire, Sumed has a vast range of products in the following sections: wheelchairs, pressure area

care, pressure mapping, and wound care. One keen area of interest for Sumed is the care and prevention of pressure ulcers forming on the heel. Defined as a localised injury to the skin or underlying tissue, the bony prominence and awkward positioning of the ulcer can make for an extremely uncomfortable and painful experience for patients who are bed bound or in a fixed position for prolonged periods of time.

“Friction is one of the biggest causes of skin breakdown in the heel area. To combat this, we have just introduced a new product called Sumed Yathan Second Skin Heel Sleeve. This product is designed to reduce friction at the heel,” stated Graham.

Perfect for use in homecare, nursing home/ nursing facilities, hospitals and clinics, Sumed Yathan Second Skin Heel Sleeve will address the fixation of non-adhesive

wound dressings and can help prevent skin degradation, pressure points, and aid in the treatment of pressure ulcers.

The sleeve enables six key features that include the redistribution of pressure, keeps the foot cool with a good airflow, reduces sheer, is lightweight and ambulatory, and easy to wash and disinfect. It comes available in small shoe size 1-6, and medium shoe size 5-10.

Proud to support British manufacturing, Sumed has grown exponentially over the past five years and is well on its way to becoming a leading supplier in its field. Its partnerships with OTs, Tissue Viability Nurses, and Rehab Engineers have not gone unnoticed, so much so, from 1st April 2021, Sumed was appointed contractor for Cumbria County Council for service and repair of specialised equipment. The three year contract involves equipment servicing and repairs for specialist lifts, hoists and specialised equipment owned by Cumbria County Council. This contract comes as a well-deserved reward for all the hard work Sumed put into ensuring the companies service-related activity not only survived throughout COVID-19, but thrived because of it.

To support its vast product portfolio, Sumed also offers a clean and repair service for all cushions and mattresses purchased, and medical equipment rental for all items including mattresses, wheelchairs, and cushions.

In the future, Sumed will continue to increase its current product range of pressure management products whilst looking to accelerate growth through increasing its sales team and attending appropriate exhibitions. You’ll find Sumed at The Occupational Therapy Show on 23rd-24th November 2022 at the NEC in Birmingham where it will be showcasing the Sumed Yathan Second Skin Heel Sleeve amongst other products.

XEC7 launches Orbel® at London Health Plus Care Show

: UK and EU healthcare facilities will now see dramatic surges in personal hygiene compliance, positively impacting infection control

: Orbel® personal hand sanitiser revolutionary design uses ‘natural instinct’ to clean hands

: Supporting WHO 5 moment protocols to fill gaps no other product can

: Over 800 attendees visited the XEC7 exhibit, and over 2,500 samples of Orbel® were given to care workers from all sectors of healthcare

In May 2022, XEC7 launched the revolutionary personal hand sanitiser, Orbel®, at the Health Plus Care Show at London’s Excel. More than 800 attendees visited the XEC7 exhibit with over 2,500 samples given to healthcare industry representatives such as porters, surgeons, leaders of trusts, doctors, nurses, infection control managers and care workers. Individuals and organisations from all sectors were awed by the unique yet intuitive design of the innovative personal hand sanitiser, Orbel®

“The response was truly astonishing,” says Spencer Hemming, CEO of the XEC7 Group. “It’s been a long, tough journey over two years to get Orbel® approved for the UK market and have stock on the ground to supply a volume across the UK. All in the very place it was designed in, and for, back in 2012 – the launch experience was genuinely magical.”

To use Orbel®, simply swipe the unit with your fingers and palm adjusting the pressure to get the right amount of gel. With its patented roller

Antser

Pioneers of the world's first virtual reality (VR) enabled behaviour change programme for children’s services, Antser’s patented, intuitive and clinically-led technology has a diverse range of uses to directly support vulnerable children and young people, and the teams around them across childrens’ and adults’ social care, education, and healthcare sectors.

Antser’s 360-degree immersive films and VR headsets provide professionals the experience to witness the impact of trauma, abuse, and neglect through the eyes of the child. Designed to enhance understanding of a child’s emotions, users’ can experience trauma and potential triggers to improve the care, support, and guidance they provide. This powerful approach quickly and effectively delivers the knowledge, understanding, and empathy that otherwise can take years to develop.

Extensively used by teams across different sectors, Darent Valley Hospital, a member of the Dartford and

ball design and snap-on clip system, your personal Orbel® goes wherever you go! Ideal for anyone on the move since there’s always instant accessibility.

With just a single swipe of your hand, enough gel can be released to sanitise both hands as per the WHO recommended guidelines. Clean your hands thoroughly, ensuring the gel spreads across your hands, even your finger tips! Wait a few seconds for your hands to dry, and you are ready to face the world!

Sounds simple enough, yet the design and the psychology behind it are remarkable.

Clean hands for keeping germs at bay has always been a constant struggle. Germs are everywhere and seem inescapable, so the battle to maintain clean hands is never-ending. Hygiene compliance fights time pressures, limited facility access, a lack of understanding, skin irritation, and outright

forgetfulness.

However, Orbel® returned to every human’s instinctive reaction to wipe our dirty hands on our trousers. We are born with the genetic code to wipe messy hands. Just watch any child with dirty hands!

“As adults, we retain the instinct to wipe or clean our hands, often on whatever is nearby and accessible, including trousers, shirt, apron, or tissues. Wiping is simply natural instinct,” Spencer continues. “Orbel® award-winning design borrows a page from neuroscience, converting high attention and time-consuming function for the brain like handwashing into an automatic process. So, the habit of hand hygiene now supports other standards like wall-mounted hand hygiene.”

Using Orbel® personal hand sanitiser fills gaps in compliance no other product can fill, so healthcare facilities now see a dramatic surge in personal hygiene compliance. This increased compliance quickly makes a positive impact on infection control.

Orbel® was created and patented by the James Dyson Award-winning inventor, Adam Sutcliffe (within the accelerator programme run by Imperial College and the Royal College of Art, London, and was dubbed as “the next big thing” by Sir James Dyson.

“To finally be out shaking hands safely, meeting face-to-face at the Health Plus Care Show was an incredible opportunity to see Orbel® in

action. Watching the positive reactions of care professionals was a truly inspiring experience,” concludes Spencer.

Michael Woods, CEO of Orbel Health, follows, “Bringing a novel and disruptive solution to the market is a complicated task for all innovation companies so Orbel® is pleased to have an excellent partner in Europe with XEC7 who has shown creativity and commitment to navigating the complicated market environment to execute an incredible product launch. We’re excited to add the UK to the list of countries where Orbel® personal hand sanitiser can now contribute to increasing hand hygiene compliance and reducing the spread of harmful pathogens.”

Team Orbel® Spencer, Adam, Mark, Gerrod, Becks and Sofia extend thanks to all those who attended the Health Plus Care Show. Every team member enjoyed demonstrating this simple yet effective solution to the problem the healthcare industry faces every day. It was truly an exceptional experience to see this major issue solved with a swipe of just one hand – now a reality with Orbel® from XEC7 the exclusive UK Distributor.

YOURmeds brings medication management into the 21st Century

YOURmeds smart medication management system brings medication adherence into the 21st Century with its easy-to-understand, simple-to-use, portable medication management system. YOURmeds provides clinicians, adult social care teams & care providers with real-time medication adherence data, enabling prescriptions & care packages to be adapted.

The system uses Strength Based Commissioning to increase independence and capacity within adult social care through digital rather than physical support. On average, YOURmeds achieves an 84% adherence rate, and from our data, we know that 1 in 4 of our adherent rounds is due to a supporter intervention. In March of this year, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) released their Medtech Innovation Briefing (MIB) that acknowledges YOURmeds as the most innovative, end-to-end solution addressing the issue of medication adherence in the digital age.

Over the last two years, YOURmeds has grown the number of organisations it works with from 2 to 14.

Connecting visions

In this issue of Healthcare Matters, we are pleased to announce Birmingham Optical as our Technology Supplier of the Month.

Established in 1958, Birmingham Optical has over 60 years of experience in supplying equipment and is positioned as a key supplier in the optical industry. Headquartered out of its main base at the Gravelly Industrial Park in Birmingham for all its sales in Optical and Lab and support service, there is also a secondary site in Daresbury SciTech Park that support its Ophthalmology team.

“Whereas many of our competitors represent a single brand, we sell many, offering a vast choice of extensive and diverse ranges across our divisions to ensure all our customer needs can be met. As part of our entire service we offer ophthalmic equipment sales, service, training and education, accessories and consumables across optometry, lens edging labs, hospitals, private ophthalmology clinics, academia and domiciliary businesses,” stated Amanda Higginbotham, CCO at Birmingham Optical.

Taking great pride in its superior products and services that are available, Birmingham Optical is constantly looking for new ways to improve and innovate. As market leaders, the company is well established to offer training and education that supports your investment for the long term. Amanda added, “We ensure our customers maximise their purchases from us by supporting them with practice and lab planning, user training, CPD education, service packages, and to support how to make the most from their purchases as well as adding new revenue streams to their businesses. We are proud to have our own dedicated field-based team of engineers that is the largest across the UK.”

In recent news, Birmingham Optical has launched its latest Nidek Retina Scan Duo 2, which is the successor to the Nidek Retina Scan (RS) 330 OCT that received remarkable levels of success in the Optometry market. Great news for all Nidek fans who bought the first version as they can also upgrade to the latest software which features many enhancements to the image quality as well as an overall reduction in capture times as requested by existing users.

Designed for enhanced screening and clinical efficiency, the high-speed image capture means that OCT images are captured at scan speeds of 70,000 A-scans/s which is 32% faster than acquisition with the Retina Scan Duo™ using Regular OCT sensitivity. The Duo 2 has a wide area scan of 12 x 9mm, as well as a wide area normative database that can provide coverage of

macula: 9 x 9mm and disc: 6 x 6mm. The product features a new image enhancement technique called Denoising. With deep learning of a large data set of images averaged from 120 images, this technique provides high-definition images comparable to a multiple-image-averaging technique. The denoising function generates high-definition images from a single frame while decreasing image acquisition time and increasing patient comfort. The new 12-megapixel CCD camera produces high quality fundus images with a 45° angle of view, as well as stereo and panorama photography. Some user-friendly

features include 3D auto tracking and auto shot, operation with joystick for flexible alignment, a space-saving unit, NAVIS-EX. Some optical features include AngioScan, long axial length normative database, Anterior segment adapter, angle measurement, and corneal measurement.

Another notable product is the Oculus Myopia Master which is a great instrument in diagnosing and treating Myopia. “The questionnaire helps parents understand why their child is short sighted and what they can do to help. An advanced algorithm helps predict the possible increase in Myopia that could occur in the child without intervention. The device can also show the positive effect of treatment, slowing down their progressive Myopia,” explained Amanda.

Myopia management made easy; the Myopia Master is designed using seven simple steps to manage all key data with just one measurement process. Refraction, axial length and keratometry are the main measures required for professional myopia management, but only in combination do they allow for individualised treatment and counselling. The standalone device is fast and contactless, delivering a measurement process that takes less than two minutes. The acute data analysis is paramount when compared to normative growth curves that are calculated from more than 20,000 eyes. Using a traffic light system, the Myopia Master software assists the practitioner using the near-work calculator which is a helpful gadget for computing the near-work risk factor. Based on the evaluation, the software then provides recommended treatment options which can be customisable to the client. Perfect for parents, the software also produces a take home report alongside regular follow-up examinations based off the success of the treatment.

COVID-19 was a difficult time to navigate across all industries. Amanda explained how the company was affected and how it has moved forward since. “During lockdown

many Opticians were working harder with often longer hours as frontline workers whilst doing an amazing job for the public. During this time ensuring the clinic remained up and running was critical. Service became key, so to support this we have since launched better service packages and are continually working to shorten the service SLAs. During lockdown many people re-evaluated their work/life balance and many have come out of this wanting more time with loved ones and more flexibility at work. In light of this, we now offer more opportunities for hybrid and remote working as well as flexible hours.”

In an ever-changing world where the benefits of new technology platforms are constantly improving and adapting, Birmingham Optical has further reviewed how its teams work to ensure it is maximising its efficiencies to free up more time for employees to do more interesting aspects of their job or to consider new roles which have been created that better suit the new way of working.

In closing, we asked Amanda what plans the company had for the future, she answered. “To grow as a technology and service provider, ensure our staff are knowledgeable and supported to do a great job every time, and respond to our customer demands. We are very grateful to all our customers old and new, many of which have been buying from us for many years and have become friends of Birmingham Optical. We never take anything for granted and feel very privileged to have established such great relations.”

the design and build of an ambulance drop-off canopy and associated link walkway at Barnsley Hospital, as part of a £3.5m development to feature a co-located Children’s Emergency Ward and purpose-built Children’s Assessment Unit. The 33m canopy was designed and manufactured in the company’s custom-built West Sussex factory before being delivered to site.

Fordingbridge were further approached by a national main contractor to provide an ambulance bay canopy as part of a new 2-storey Emergency Department extension to Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Cheshire. At 65m long, and with a span of 5.6m, this was an even more challenging undertaking, but by including a clear span to the front section to cover the ambulances, and a section to the rear to allow for staff/patient and pedestrian cover, this design exactly met the requirements of the ambulance bay.

As industry leaders in live canopy and walkway installations, Fordingbridge work with NHS Trusts, architects and contractors alike to implement timely roll-outs of upgraded facilities ensuring

each project is delivered on time and to budget.

Under the tagline of ‘Inspiring Design and Build’, the company’s portfolio of work within the healthcare sector alone, covers hospital entrance and the aforementioned ambulance bay canopies to enhance patient arrival and departure. There are also covered link walkways providing a cost-effective umbilical between new wards and existing hospital buildings, and new emergency department buildings to optimise patient flow.

Technical sales manager, Jon Heywood, commented, “Our proven experience, expertise and technical innovation mean that a Fordingbridge project delivers not only outstanding design but also practicality in relation to, cost, quality, construction and project lifecycle.” The company is confident in

providing the highest quality of design and build, that all structures include an industry-leading 25 year guarantee alongside the design skills, material specialisms and proven construction methodology to create distinctive projects that guarantee performance.

The past few years have seen continued growth and the company were able to work continuously during these difficult times. There has obviously been greater need for covered space since the start of the pandemic, therefore Fordingbridge aim to continue to develop new designs as required.

Jon Heywood further stated, “With over 50 years of experience, we work with integrity, creating inspiring projects to transform spaces and enhance experience of the built environment. We have earned an excellent reputation for creating aesthetically pleasing, affordable, inspiring solutions.”

Indeed, this is reiterated by the fact that 70% of its business comes from repeat customers and recommendations, resulting in Fordingbridge’s high reputation as a company. By providing a full turnkey service that delivers each customer’s brief to the exact requirements within the time and budget specified is a service benefit that its competitors cannot match.

Untap your workplace productivity

U ntap monitors levels of COVID-19 in the workplace in real-time, enabling vulnerable employees to return to work and preventing transmission to reduce workplace absence.

Around a quarter of viral transmission takes place at work, yet before 2020 this was often not acknowledged. This leads to unnecessary workplace sickness in both absenteeism and presenteeism. As over half of COVID-19 cases show no symptoms; once a single symptomatic person is found, many other asymptomatic individuals are likely. As COVID-19 becomes endemic, this will lead to further workplace sickness.

Untap can measure your workplace COVID-19 risk without any individual taking a single LFT & can detect SARSCoV-2 before any individual shows symptoms. This allows you to implement the correct measures in your workplace to prevent transmission and remove the measures completely when the risk is low.

Wastewater testing is used globally to track public health. It has been used in the tracking and eradication of polio, and the monitoring of COVID-19.

Untap provides state-of-theart wastewater testing with same day results, providing an early warning system, including targeting asymptomatic individuals. Untap has been carrying out this service at sites across the UK, including offices,

factories, museums, and care homes.

Reassure those vulnerable in your workplace and Untap your productivity.

Conex

Bänninger discusses the necessity of sustainable construction to achieve a lower carbon footprint

Withsustainable

construction becoming increasingly necessary during a building’s lifecycle, choosing the right products and materials is vital for constructing a sustainable building. Daniel Smith, BIM Manager for Conex Bänninger, discusses the growing importance of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and sustainability during the design process to achieve a lower carbon footprint for projects.

It is widely known that BIM is the process of creating and managing information for a complete project and incorporating that data across the entire life cycle of that building. Conex Bänninger’s investment in BIM Objects demonstrates its contribution towards green building construction by including recyclable fittings and flame-free processes to assist developers’ contribution to achieving higher green points in the design of their buildings.

Serving as a blueprint to enhance a building’s energy efficiency, the benefits of BIM go beyond just time and money savings. Additional systems such as hot water solar systems and rainwater harvesting systems could be fitted, which are becoming increasingly popular with new commercial buildings as they help meet environmental targets, all of which increase future efforts towards sustainable construction. This is where Conex Bänninger’s >B< Press, >B< Press Solar, and >B< MaxiPro fittings can be used that are all included in BIM Objects. Additionally, Conex Compression and brazing solutions are also included in BIM, with further products in the pipeline.

All Conex Bänninger products in BIM Objects are in accordance with the international standard, ISO 23386:2020, ISO 1401 & 9000, which means they are machine-readable, versatile, and consistent across different software. All Conex Bänninger fittings can be found here.

With the UK government setting construction targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2025 and committing to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050; retrofitted buildings are making an impact with upgrades to insulation, improved thermal performance, energy efficient windows, and more efficient electrical and heating appliances, which have all proven to reduce carbon emissions.

According to the UK government, the key objective to achieving these targets is to reduce capital cost and the carbon footprint from the construction and operation of the built environment, as the construction sector accounts for roughly a third of the UK’s carbon emissions and 59% of UK total waste.

As the importance of sustainable buildings increases, to further their contribution, Conex Bänninger’s new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) looks at how press-fit technology can contribute to achieving a more sustainable building and lowering the carbon footprint during construction. Entitled ‘Re-assessing the implications of copper press-fitting as an alternative to copper brazing for building services’, the CPD looks at what both technologies have brought to the industry.

Conex Bänninger’s CPD is geared towards a range of professionals who are involved with advancing the plumbing and HVACR sector and those concerned with occupation and health and safety issues on construction sites. Typically, this would include building owners and operators, architects, consulting engineers, contractors, commercial property developers, designers, manufacturers, and suppliers.

OneWay Plastics is the market leader in many European countries for piping bags, used in bakery and other applications. They have a large range of bags in different sizes, which all use a triple layer system, the outside layer being rough for a firm grip, the middle layer holding its shape to avoid spillage when the bag is placed down, and a slick inner layer to ensure no wastage of food product.

Their range includes the Comfort Bio-Based bag, which 80% is made from an innovative plastic material manufactured from cane sugar. Unlike petroleum-based plastics, this material has no ecological footprint, CO2 emissions in production are significantly reduced, and the bag is 100% recyclable. Blackthorn Salt: Scottish Sea Salt

Astonishingly

made on the only working Thorn Tower in the world, Blackthorn Salt comes from the sea, wind and thorns of the Scottish West Coast.

At Blackthorn, we use these incredible natural forces to focus on flavour and crystal quality, as well as provenance and sustainability. Each crystal comes from pure local seawater evaporated on the Thorn Tower. This beautiful structure harnesses coastal winds and sun to dry off 90% of that water. Then our Salters skilfully grow the crystals in the Pan House, painstakingly ensuring a balance of other elements is captured – magnesium, calcium, potassium, tannins, etc – which make Blackthorn’s taste and characteristics so unique.

Blackthorn Salt has a flavour profile that is distinctively mineral-rich and bittersweet: it echoes the sea, yet also has a depth and mellowness, which elevates flavours allowing them to shine with a lasting moreishness.

Multi-award winning* Blackthorn Salt is organically approved and the salt of choice for many Michelinstarred restaurants, chefs, delis, farm shops and home foodies.

Using electric heaters to decarbonise industry

Dennis Long, a chief system engineer at Watlow, says manufacturers should make the switch to electric sooner rather than later. Electrification of process heating is a key strategy in addressing climate change.

Electric heaters do not burn fossil fuels and can be powered via renewable energy sources. Electric heat exchangers are no stranger to oil and gas operations, but historically they have been used only in applications with a name plate under one megawatt (MW).

But potential is growing to use electric heaters for applications requiring more than one MW but less than 15 MW. These span several areas, including oil and gas, and also renewable fuel production. Electric heaters and heat exchangers have other advantages including less thermal lag, safer operation, more uniform distribution of heat and smaller overall footprint.

Smart temperature control from Watlow

Asmart power controller controls power using sensors that monitor voltage and current. A manufacturer of power transmission cables once relied on employees to periodically check the current gauges visually for each zone of extruders that coat the cables. On shifts with lower staffing faulty product was often the first indication of a problem. The customer replaced the solid-state power controllers in the extruders with Aspyre DT power controllers from Watlow, so they could see if cable needed to be scrapped or whether production could continue until the scheduled maintenance.

Watlow’s range of heating equipment, including its Aspyre controllers, is frequently used by heavy duty industrial companies and is available between a range of 35 to 2,100 amps to support a wide variety of applications. For example, a single high amp Aspyre unit is ideal for applications using multiple small units with low range amps. Smart features enable users to minimise scrap and down time.

Making figures of eight fun

“Testing ring final circuit has always been a pain,” said Brendan Beaver, manager of Metrel UK, the innovator of electrical test solutions. “It is complicated and fiddly, consequently it is time consuming. Our boffins at Metrel have found a method of making it simpler, and importantly much faster and easing your load.

“In fact we think it could save you up to 60% of the time it takes to measure r1, rn, r2 and R1 + RN, and R1 + R2. And it makes the process almost pleasurable. What we have is a new adapter and firmware. To use it you null all the test leads and croc clips, and then connect

the incoming and outgoing lives, neutrals and PEs. Connect the tester and start the test. Initially it gives you r1, rn and r2.

“Next the tester is disconnected and the adapter is left at the board. The tester and its BS1363 plug test lead is taken around the circuit. It locates the socket with the highest R1+R2 and R1+RN reading and the measurements taken. The results can be saved for later certification.

“This revolutionary adapter, A 2214, really is the productive man’s ring continuity tester.”

Wieland’s robust switch for field use

The new IP67 Ethernet switch from Wieland Electric enables reliable operation even under the most adverse environmental conditions

Modular and flexible machine concepts are growing rapidly in importance. As this happens, more and more automation parts are being connected in a way that is not centralised. This also applies to IP switches, which are no longer only mounted in the control cabinet, but also directly onto the machine. To ensure that network components operate reliably under these conditions, the devices must meet stringent specifications as they are directly exposed to potentially harmful influences such as dust, moisture, and electromagnetic radiation. Wieland Electric offers a suitable solution to this with its new IP67 switch.

The wienet IP-SWITCH UMS 8-W-M12 is equipped with a robust metal housing and can therefore be used under the most adverse environmental conditions. Splashed water, contamination and high temperatures up to 75°C are handled without any problems. In addition, the switch complies with the EN 50155 standard, making it suitable for the harsh requirements of railroad applications. Fluctuations and interruptions in the power supply are tolerated, as are vibrations, shocks and high relative humidity. The compact device is easy to maintain and features a long service life and high electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

The new Wieland Electric IP67 ethernet switch's plug-and-play feature allows for quick commissioning even without programming experience. Eight M12 Fast Ethernet ports

allow sensors and actuators to be connected in a stable and consistent way which contributes to low failure rates. Its compatibility with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) within the IEC 61131-2 framework also ensures reliable network operation with the lowest possible failure rate.

The robust and compact IP67 Ethernet switch from Wieland Electric ensures reliable operation even in harsh environments.

Humidity control is extremely important to the packaging process as it helps reduce waste and increase productivity. When stable environmental conditions are not met in areas where packaging is stored and used it can cause many issues.

Hydroscopic materials such as paper and card become damaged and warped when there is too much or too little moisture in the air. This results in an increase of waste material. Another common issue is the build-up of static which causes the paper and card to stick together. When this happens, snagging and paper jams

occur, resulting in unwanted machinery breakdowns and expensive repairs.

With this in mind, the Packaging Innovations & Empack exhibition

at the NEC Birmingham was the right exhibition for Humidity Solutions to promote its range of humidifiers and dehumidifiers. Its product range is ideal for solving the issues with packaging production and processing as it offers a full turnkey solution. Starting with an onsite consultation, to supply and installation right the way through to serving and maintenance of the equipment. Humidity Solutions has helped many packaging suppliers over its 14 years’ history.
