offers expert guidance on how businesses can ensure compliance with the UK’s new ‘Simpler Recycling’ legislation, which came into effect as of 31st March 2025.
Recycling is a vital component of sustainability, helping to reduce waste, conserve resources and cut pollution. To improve recycling rates and minimise contamination, the UK government has introduced new regulations that will standardise waste separation for businesses.
Effective as of 31st March, all commercial facilities in England with more than 10 full-time employees – including healthcare and academic institutions – must ensure multi-stream recyclable waste is separated at the point of collection. Businesses now must sort dry recyclables, food waste and general waste before disposal, with any non-compliance potentially leading to significant fines.
By 31st March 2027, the law will then extend to smaller businesses with fewer than 10 employees, with an additional requirement to separate plastic film for recycling.
While some organisations may be concerned about the costs of upgrading their waste management systems, efficient recycling can reduce waste disposal expenses, making it a financially smart investment.
Businesses in sectors such as hospitality, catering, leisure and retail may face added challenges, including high waste volumes, limited space for bins and maintaining hygiene while sorting organic waste. To mitigate these issues, businesses should prioritise staff training and strategic bin placement in high traffic areas to ensure recycling is easy and effective.
To implement a successful recycling strategy, businesses must first conduct a waste audit to understand their current waste streams and identify key areas for improvement. With this data, businesses can then develop a clear recycling strategy tailored to their operations. Engaging waste management experts early on can provide valuable insights, helping businesses optimise their processes while ensuring compliance.

Menzel Elektromotoren fills a gap in the market with its range of pressurised Ex p motors, configuring them from stock components in the shortest possible time.
Menzel recently built an Ex p compressor motor for an internationally active Austrian chemical company within three weeks. The squirrel cage motor from the MEBKSW series was modified in various ways to suit the application and sitespecific requirements.
The motor case was fitted with an air purge system that allows the motor to be flushed with an inert gas mixture before startup in order to remove potentially explosive atmospheres and to maintain
a constant positive pressure during operation, thus preventing ingress of hazardous gases.
The motor was labeled II 3G Ex pzc IIB T3 Gc. Additional works included: conversion to cooling type IC 81W (water-cooled), mechanical adjustment from size 560 to size 630, repositioning the terminal boxes, preparation of the neutral box for the installation of current transformers, adjustment of the flanges for the slide bearings and installation of vibration sensors.
Menzel visited the customer’s plant even before the order was placed to discuss details and observe the installation situation and eventually also installed and commissioned the drive system.
In 2023, Menzel received the TÜV certification for the manufacture of squirrel cage motors in ignition protection type Ex p, pressurisation for Zone 1. The German motor builder can apply the manufacturing procedure to stock motors in a wide output range and is thus able to quickly and flexibly provide competitively priced Ex p motors featuring the product categories 2G and 3G.

Representing a leap forward in programming, UNISIG’s next-generation operating system further improves the human-robot interface and slashes programming times.
The new operating system, featured on UNISIG’s UNE6-2i-750-CR small-diameter gundrilling machine, streamlines the setup of dozens of different part handling combinations to reduce new part setup times by 80% or more. The system significantly improves the communication between the machine’s human machine interface (HMI) and the robotic controller. This enables centralized data storage or a single source of truth – the coding and data for the gundrilling operation and the program for the part handling are stored together for ease of recall.
Because it works within a parametric programming environment, the new operating system automatically adjusts its parameters to any dimensional part changes, without the need to manually calculate and enter in new parameters.
Such intelligence eliminates the need to start over and create entirely new and independent programs, while greatly simplifying and shortening programming times for part families.
The UNE6-2i-750-CR gundrilling machine with integrated robot ships with a handheld programming console/teach pendant connected to the machine. Prior to the use of parametric programming, all part handling operations were pre-programmed using the pendant. Users can now enter & store all machine & robotic parameters in the machine HMI. This allows for a more centralized user experience and greatly reduces the depth of robotic experience required.
The machine HMI has built-in parametric selection guides, allowing users to toggle between data entry and the programming guides. Each data value, and its function, are graphically displayed in the on-screen programming guide. This prevents the guide from being misplaced and makes it available at all times, which is especially advantageous when periodically adding new parts involving large time gaps between them.
The UNE6-2i-750-CR with integrated robotic automation also features interchangeable part trays. The robot services both the machine’s spindles and accommodates drilling of different diameters from each end.
The optional lantern chuck system on this machine model allows workpiece loading into the rear of an automatic collet chuck to ensure accurate workholding, especially for uniquely shaped workpieces.
UNISIG’s UNE6 Series of precision gundrilling machines generate holes from 0.8mm to 6.0mm (0.03” to 0.24”) in even the most challenging of materials. Such capability makes the machines well suited for a wide range of applications, including medical part manufacturing.
Further information on all machines and the complete UNISIG machine program is available at: www.unisig.com or follow the company on LinkedIn and Twitter (@UNISIG). You will also meet us at the EMO 2024 show in Hannover, Germany, from 22-26 September.
One of the technical highlights at ACHEMA 2024 was KSB Group’s new 3D-printed containment shroud for mag-drive pumps of the Magnochem type series. Named MagnoProtect, the component offers the same safety as a doublewalled containment shroud – without the latter’s disadvantages of heating up strongly and having high eddy current losses.
AtWhile providing comparable safety, the overall efficiencies of the new mag-drive designs clearly exceed those of canned motor pumps. Designed with a structure of channels, the new containment shroud offers a second, redundant, static safety barrier preventing leakage of the fluid handled.
A pressure transmitter monitors the vacuum generated, which is present during normal operation in the channels of the containment shroud. If the monitored pressure rises to atmospheric pressure, the outer containment shell is leaking. If the pressure rises above the ambient pressure, the
inner containment shell is damaged. The containment shroud design is characterised by high mechanical strength and good wear properties. It has been optimised to minimise heat losses and eddy currents.
Converting a standardised chemical pump with mechanical seal to a magnetic drive is easier and more cost-efficient than retrofitting it with a canned motor. The geometry and dimensions of the new containment shroud are integrated in the modular system of Magnochem, allowing metallic or ceramic containment shrouds to be replaced easily. This enables operators to upgrade older pump sets that are still in service without difficulty.

When it comes to maintaining pristine commercial spaces, the choice between a commercial vacuum cleaner and a commercial floor sweeper can significantly impact cleanliness and operational efficiency. Understanding these differences is crucial for ensuring your cleaning efforts align with your business’ needs.
What are the benefits and what does a commercial floor sweeper do?
When deciding between a commercial floor sweeper and a vacuum cleaner, the environment and types of debris play a crucial role. Floor sweepers excel in environments where debris like dust, dirt and larger particles accumulate over broader areas. For instance, in retail environments where floors are often expansive and debris can vary in size, a commercial floor sweeper proves indispensable. These machines use powerful brushes and suction mechanisms to efficiently gather and trap debris, ensuring thorough cleaning without stirring up dust.
The benefits extend beyond cleanliness. Using a sweeper reduces the physical strain on cleaning staff, allowing them to cover large areas more quickly and effectively. This not only boosts productivity but also enhances employee satisfaction by reducing
fatigue and repetitive strain injuries. Moreover, a cleaner environment enhances safety for both staff and visitors, minimising slip hazards and maintaining a professional appearance that positively impacts customer perceptions.
What are the benefits and what does a commercial vacuum cleaners do?
In contrast, commercial vacuum cleaners are tailored for environments where precision and manoeuvrability are key. Offices, hotels, retail stores and healthcare facilities often require vacuum cleaners that can navigate tight spaces, corners and various floor types with ease. Tennant’s range includes lightweight backpack vacuums for multilevel buildings, wide-area cleaning path vacuums for open spaces and low-profile canister vacuums for reaching under furniture.

Since 1953, NetterVibration has been successfully supplying industrial companies from numerous sectors with the widest range of pneumatic, electric and hydraulic vibrators and advises its trading partners and customers worldwide on the optimum solutions in bulk material handling.
NetterVibration is the market leader in the field of pneumatic vibrators and impactors and not only focuses on quality but also houses research, development, production, consulting and sales under one roof in order to be able to react efficiently to customer requirements and new developments in the market. The application consulting team is always in close dialogue with customers – it has an ear to the market. NetterVibration utilises this knowledge for the ongoing development of its products and for genuine innovations such as ePKL that are designed entirely in-house.
PKL Series: High impact pneumatic impactors
Pneumatic impactors of the PKL series enable reliable
and effective cleaning that is gentle on the container without deforming and subsequently constricting the outlets which gradually obstruct the material flow. The effect of the impactor is comparable to the traditional ‘silo hammer’ but avoids the health and safety risk to the operator. Strongly adhering materials are loosened by the impact of the PKL on its impact surface (not the container). The pneumatic impactor generates an ideal, elastic impulse. PKL impactors are not only more powerful but require less compressed air per impact. They are available in a whole range of models which can include features such as noise reduction, automatic controls, high temperature, ATEX and stainless-steel options.
ePKL: The first practical electric impactor
With the ePKL, NetterVibration presents a technological innovation that enables the practical electric operation of an industrial impactor for the first time. This makes the ePKL flexible and easy to use and control almost anywhere, independently of a compressed air supply. The device perfectly complements the proven PKL series from NetterVibration. Like all PKL intermittent impactors, the ePKL is particularly suitable for knocking off hard-to-remove
adhesions on walls, pipes and containers. Examples of applications include the removal of hose formation, bridging and residual emptying.
About NetterVibration worldwide

The production and use of hydrogen is expected to increase dramatically in the coming years as the search for low-carbon alternatives to fossil fuels gathers pace. Hydrogen can be produced from renewable energy and water and does not produce CO2 on combustion, but its properties vary significantly enough from those of natural gas such that it forces new considerations on measurement technology.
There are many different norms for hydrogen quality and at least as many requirements from end-users that must be respected. These can range from ultra-pure hydrogen for hydrogen fuel cells (from e.g. 99.97%, ISO 14687-2), to combustion applications, where lower qualities (<98%) can easily suffice.
To ensure that purity requirements are met, hydrogen quality is measured during production, transport and before end-use. For the most stringent requirements, the hydrogen fraction as well as the fractions of all impurities must be determined. In this case the individual gas components must be measured directly, for example using a gas chromatograph.
For less exacting measurement tasks, such as the determination of hydrogen purities on the order of 98% or even 99.5%, or as an online monitor of hydrogen purity and gas quality, correlative measuring technologies can be an excellent alternative.
Correlative measurements function by equating the measured quantity (eg. thermal conductivity) to, for example, the hydrogen fraction via calibration. Measuring instruments based on these technologies are significantly less expensive (CAPEX and OPEX), require less maintenance, are more robust and can easily be distributed and integrated into existing infrastructure.
The physical properties of hydrogen are very different to virtually every other gas, which makes correlative measuring instruments particularly useful for hydrogen purity applications. Such instruments are typically based on measurements of thermal conductivity, speed of sound, or density of the gas mixture. Measuring instruments based on thermal conductivity, such as the gasQS static from Mems AG, can easily be configured to measure thermal conductivity in the range of interest, regardless of whether this is 99.5-100%, 98-100% or even 0-2% hydrogen. It is also precise, with excellent long-term stability, and is temperature (-20°C… +80°C) and pressure compensated (0barg….15barg).
One property of correlative measuring instruments with a single measurand is the requirement that the measured gas mixture must be quasi-binary and set at calibration, otherwise small errors in the measurements can result. However, for hydrogen purity applications these errors are reduced considerably: the thermal conductivity of hydrogen is so much higher than that of other gases (other than
helium) that changing the ratio of impurities does not significantly impact the thermal conductivity of the gas mixture & hence the measurement accuracy.
The measurement challenges linked to the advancing hydrogen economy are many and varied, with no one-size-fits-all solution. Correlative measuring instruments are characterised by simplicity, cost-effectiveness and robustness and have the potential to play a significant role in hydrogen purity measuring solutions.

Digitisation is reshaping utility operations. It starts at the front line of utilities professionals in the field who are tasked with improving efficiency, accuracy, responsiveness and customer satisfaction. They need robust and reliable technology solutions that are built to withstand the challenging working conditions they face every day. Rugged technology is revolutionising the way utility professionals conduct their day-to-day duties, enabling faster in the field decisionmaking, accurate and timely network and infrastructure repairs and improved customer handling.
Efficient field services are a critical part of utilities operations
Operating outside of traditional office settings, utility works spend the majority of their time in environments ranging from remote facilities and infrastructure to inside customers’ homes. They are tasked with everything from the routine inspection of customer equipment (eg. boilers), to maintaining key assets and infrastructure, and conducting emergency callouts whenever/wherever they arise.
The nature of the job means workers must operate around the clock, often in hazardous environments, with a degree of risk, in all weather conditions, and often alone in remote areas. As such, they need technology that’s built with these kinds of use cases in mind.
Challenging work environments require rugged technology
The demanding nature of field services work means more and more organisations are turning to rugged technology to
prevent unplanned downtime and maintain operational efficiency. This is because rugged laptops and tablets are designed and built from the ground up with the needs of their users in mind. As such, they can thrive in environments where standard consumer-grade equipment will quickly fail.
Genuine rugged devices are independently certified to MIL-STD 810 and IP standards, ensuring durability. Long battery life is a key considering in the field, so rugged devices should provide options to use hot-swappable batteries for extended use, as well as multiple connectivity options to provide seamless data collection and communication, and long OS support, particularly if an app ecosystem is built around a specific version. Comprehensive warranties and aftermarket support further enhance reliability.
Practical tips for integrating rugged technology into field services operations
When integrated correctly, rugged technology can significantly improve field service operations as well as overall operational efficiency. Here are some practical tips to get started:
Assess your needs
Before integrating rugged solutions, assess your specific field service requirements and identify the tasks that will benefit most from the technology, such as data collection, reporting, and real-time communication.
Train your team
Ensure that your field service professionals are trained to use the technology effectively. Provide training on key features, such as touchscreen modes, connectivity options, and security measures. Familiarity with the devices will maximise their benefits.
Customise and configure
Take advantage of each device’s configurable options and tailor them to your specific needs. For example, consider adding an imager barcode reader for inventory management or a smart card reader for secure access.
Monitor and optimise
Regularly monitor the performance of rugged devices and solutions in the field. Gather feedback from your team and identify any areas for improvement. Optimise the device settings and configurations based on real-world usage to ensure maximum efficiency.
Remote field services play an integral role throughout the utilities industry, and as more and more organisations transform from pen-and-paper based processes to fully digital field operations, finding the right tools for the job has become critical. Rugged technology is built to withstand the rigours of fieldwork, enabling it to thrive in environments where other devices would quickly fail. Not only does this translate to better operational efficiency, but it also delivers significantly higher return on investments made, making it a natural choice.
