Jenny continued, “We want to encourage people to come and talk to us, to see how we can help. We are experiencing a period of significant growth and as we go forward, we are expanding our team and services to offer further training and support.”

PRESSURE ULCER MANAGEMENT COMPANY OF THE MONTH
Dedicated to the healing and maintenance of healthy skin
In this issue of Healthcare Matters, we are pleased to announce Sumed International (UK) Ltd as our Pressure Ulcer Management Company of the Month.
Sumed is a privately owned healthcare company that is dedicated to the healing and maintenance of healthy skin. Established in the 1970s, Sumed has over 40 years’ experience in pressure area care, working closely with clinicians and carers to promote pressure relieving solutions and improve patients’ quality of life.
Over the years, Sumed has added a strong brand portfolio and represents some of the most reputable companies around the world. In 2006, Graham Collyer became the Executive Chairman, implementing a restructuring programme that elevated the company to reach higher standards of best practice and become a stronger global player in the healthcare industry.
With headquarters in Glossop, Derbyshire, Sumed has a vast range of products in the following sections: wheelchairs, pressure area
care, pressure mapping, and wound care. One keen area of interest for Sumed is the care and prevention of pressure ulcers forming on the heel. Defined as a localised injury to the skin or underlying tissue, the bony prominence and awkward positioning of the ulcer can make for an extremely uncomfortable and painful experience for patients who are bed bound or in a fixed position for prolonged periods of time.
“Friction is one of the biggest causes of skin breakdown in the heel area. To combat this, we have just introduced a new product called Sumed Yathan Second Skin Heel Sleeve. This product is designed to reduce friction at the heel,” stated Graham.
Perfect for use in homecare, nursing home/ nursing facilities, hospitals and clinics, Sumed Yathan Second Skin Heel Sleeve will address the fixation of non-adhesive
wound dressings and can help prevent skin degradation, pressure points, and aid in the treatment of pressure ulcers.
The sleeve enables six key features that include the redistribution of pressure, keeps the foot cool with a good airflow, reduces sheer, is lightweight and ambulatory, and easy to wash and disinfect. It comes available in small shoe size 1-6, and medium shoe size 5-10.
Proud to support British manufacturing, Sumed has grown exponentially over the past five years and is well on its way to becoming a leading supplier in its field. Its partnerships with OTs, Tissue Viability Nurses, and Rehab Engineers have not gone unnoticed, so much so, from 1st April 2021, Sumed was appointed contractor for Cumbria County Council for service and repair of specialised equipment. The three year contract involves equipment servicing and repairs for specialist lifts, hoists and specialised equipment owned by Cumbria County Council. This contract comes as a well-deserved reward for all the hard work Sumed put into ensuring the companies service-related activity not only survived throughout COVID-19, but thrived because of it.
To support its vast product portfolio, Sumed also offers a clean and repair service for all cushions and mattresses purchased, and medical equipment rental for all items including mattresses, wheelchairs, and cushions.
In the future, Sumed will continue to increase its current product range of pressure management products whilst looking to accelerate growth through increasing its sales team and attending appropriate exhibitions. You’ll find Sumed at The Occupational Therapy Show on 23rd-24th November 2022 at the NEC in Birmingham where it will be showcasing the Sumed Yathan Second Skin Heel Sleeve amongst other products.

XEC7 launches Orbel® at London Health Plus Care Show
: UK and EU healthcare facilities will now see dramatic surges in personal hygiene compliance, positively impacting infection control
: Orbel® personal hand sanitiser revolutionary design uses ‘natural instinct’ to clean hands
: Supporting WHO 5 moment protocols to fill gaps no other product can
: Over 800 attendees visited the XEC7 exhibit, and over 2,500 samples of Orbel® were given to care workers from all sectors of healthcare
In May 2022, XEC7 launched the revolutionary personal hand sanitiser, Orbel®, at the Health Plus Care Show at London’s Excel. More than 800 attendees visited the XEC7 exhibit with over 2,500 samples given to healthcare industry representatives such as porters, surgeons, leaders of trusts, doctors, nurses, infection control managers and care workers. Individuals and organisations from all sectors were awed by the unique yet intuitive design of the innovative personal hand sanitiser, Orbel®
“The response was truly astonishing,” says Spencer Hemming, CEO of the XEC7 Group. “It’s been a long, tough journey over two years to get Orbel® approved for the UK market and have stock on the ground to supply a volume across the UK. All in the very place it was designed in, and for, back in 2012 – the launch experience was genuinely magical.”
To use Orbel®, simply swipe the unit with your fingers and palm adjusting the pressure to get the right amount of gel. With its patented roller
Antser
Pioneers of the world's first virtual reality (VR) enabled behaviour change programme for children’s services, Antser’s patented, intuitive and clinically-led technology has a diverse range of uses to directly support vulnerable children and young people, and the teams around them across childrens’ and adults’ social care, education, and healthcare sectors.
Antser’s 360-degree immersive films and VR headsets provide professionals the experience to witness the impact of trauma, abuse, and neglect through the eyes of the child. Designed to enhance understanding of a child’s emotions, users’ can experience trauma and potential triggers to improve the care, support, and guidance they provide. This powerful approach quickly and effectively delivers the knowledge, understanding, and empathy that otherwise can take years to develop.
Extensively used by teams across different sectors, Darent Valley Hospital, a member of the Dartford and
ball design and snap-on clip system, your personal Orbel® goes wherever you go! Ideal for anyone on the move since there’s always instant accessibility.
With just a single swipe of your hand, enough gel can be released to sanitise both hands as per the WHO recommended guidelines. Clean your hands thoroughly, ensuring the gel spreads across your hands, even your finger tips! Wait a few seconds for your hands to dry, and you are ready to face the world!
Sounds simple enough, yet the design and the psychology behind it are remarkable.
Clean hands for keeping germs at bay has always been a constant struggle. Germs are everywhere and seem inescapable, so the battle to maintain clean hands is never-ending. Hygiene compliance fights time pressures, limited facility access, a lack of understanding, skin irritation, and outright
forgetfulness.
However, Orbel® returned to every human’s instinctive reaction to wipe our dirty hands on our trousers. We are born with the genetic code to wipe messy hands. Just watch any child with dirty hands!
“As adults, we retain the instinct to wipe or clean our hands, often on whatever is nearby and accessible, including trousers, shirt, apron, or tissues. Wiping is simply natural instinct,” Spencer continues. “Orbel® award-winning design borrows a page from neuroscience, converting high attention and time-consuming function for the brain like handwashing into an automatic process. So, the habit of hand hygiene now supports other standards like wall-mounted hand hygiene.”
Using Orbel® personal hand sanitiser fills gaps in compliance no other product can fill, so healthcare facilities now see a dramatic surge in personal hygiene compliance. This increased compliance quickly makes a positive impact on infection control.
Orbel® was created and patented by the James Dyson Award-winning inventor, Adam Sutcliffe (within the accelerator programme run by Imperial College and the Royal College of Art, London, and was dubbed as “the next big thing” by Sir James Dyson.
“To finally be out shaking hands safely, meeting face-to-face at the Health Plus Care Show was an incredible opportunity to see Orbel® in
action. Watching the positive reactions of care professionals was a truly inspiring experience,” concludes Spencer.
Michael Woods, CEO of Orbel Health, follows, “Bringing a novel and disruptive solution to the market is a complicated task for all innovation companies so Orbel® is pleased to have an excellent partner in Europe with XEC7 who has shown creativity and commitment to navigating the complicated market environment to execute an incredible product launch. We’re excited to add the UK to the list of countries where Orbel® personal hand sanitiser can now contribute to increasing hand hygiene compliance and reducing the spread of harmful pathogens.”
Team Orbel® Spencer, Adam, Mark, Gerrod, Becks and Sofia extend thanks to all those who attended the Health Plus Care Show. Every team member enjoyed demonstrating this simple yet effective solution to the problem the healthcare industry faces every day. It was truly an exceptional experience to see this major issue solved with a swipe of just one hand – now a reality with Orbel® from XEC7 the exclusive UK Distributor.

YOURmeds brings medication management into the 21st Century
YOURmeds smart medication management system brings medication adherence into the 21st Century with its easy-to-understand, simple-to-use, portable medication management system. YOURmeds provides clinicians, adult social care teams & care providers with real-time medication adherence data, enabling prescriptions & care packages to be adapted.
The system uses Strength Based Commissioning to increase independence and capacity within adult social care through digital rather than physical support. On average, YOURmeds achieves an 84% adherence rate, and from our data, we know that 1 in 4 of our adherent rounds is due to a supporter intervention. Councils are seeing 4 times return on investment through a reduction in care hours provided.
In March of this year, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) released their Medtech Innovation Briefing (MIB) that acknowledges YOURmeds as the most innovative, end-to-end solution addressing the issue of medication adherence in the digital age.
Over the last two years, YOURmeds has grown the number of organisations it works with from 2 to 14.
Internationally we have signed a distribution deal with one of the leading pharmacy chains in Australia. We have ongoing European projects and are delighted to bring on Connected Health as our distributor for Northern Ireland and the Republic.

DGH Pharma has been born out of science; for over 40 years, our founder, Greg Pilant, has been involved in the generation, curation, and application of clinical science in the field of infection prevention and control, and chronic wound care treatment. Greg, supported by a multinational Board of Directors and advisers, continues to lead the development of pioneering technologies that work innovatively to treat harmful bacteria and viruses responsible for HCAIs. Our innovative and novel preparation uses a mechanical rather than biocidal approach to the eradication of bacterial cells, viruses, and spores. The technology is scientifically proven to destroy harmful pathogens with one application on contact and continues to protect for 4 hours.

Connecting visions
In this issue of Healthcare Matters, we are pleased to announce Birmingham Optical as our Technology Supplier of the Month.
Established in 1958, Birmingham Optical has over 60 years of experience in supplying equipment and is positioned as a key supplier in the optical industry. Headquartered out of its main base at the Gravelly Industrial Park in Birmingham for all its sales in Optical and Lab and support service, there is also a secondary site in Daresbury SciTech Park that support its Ophthalmology team.
“Whereas many of our competitors represent a single brand, we sell many, offering a vast choice of extensive and diverse ranges across our divisions to ensure all our customer needs can be met. As part of our entire service we offer ophthalmic equipment sales, service, training and education, accessories and consumables across optometry, lens edging labs, hospitals, private ophthalmology clinics, academia and domiciliary businesses,” stated Amanda Higginbotham, CCO at Birmingham Optical.
Taking great pride in its superior products and services that are available, Birmingham Optical is constantly looking for new ways to improve and innovate. As market leaders, the company is well established to offer training and education that supports your investment for the long term. Amanda added, “We ensure our customers maximise their purchases from us by supporting them with practice and lab planning, user training, CPD education, service packages, and to support how to make the most from their purchases as well as adding new revenue streams to their businesses. We are proud to have our own dedicated field-based team of engineers that is the largest across the UK.”
In recent news, Birmingham Optical has launched its latest Nidek Retina Scan Duo 2, which is the successor to the Nidek Retina Scan (RS) 330 OCT that received remarkable levels of success in the Optometry market. Great news for all Nidek fans who bought the first version as they can also upgrade to the latest software which features many enhancements to the image quality as well as an overall reduction in capture times as requested by existing users.
Designed for enhanced screening and clinical efficiency, the high-speed image capture means that OCT images are captured at scan speeds of 70,000 A-scans/s which is 32% faster than acquisition with the Retina Scan Duo™ using Regular OCT sensitivity. The Duo 2 has a wide area scan of 12 x 9mm, as well as a wide area normative database that can provide coverage of
macula: 9 x 9mm and disc: 6 x 6mm. The product features a new image enhancement technique called Denoising. With deep learning of a large data set of images averaged from 120 images, this technique provides high-definition images comparable to a multiple-image-averaging technique. The denoising function generates high-definition images from a single frame while decreasing image acquisition time and increasing patient comfort. The new 12-megapixel CCD camera produces high quality fundus images with a 45° angle of view, as well as stereo and panorama photography. Some user-friendly
features include 3D auto tracking and auto shot, operation with joystick for flexible alignment, a space-saving unit, NAVIS-EX. Some optical features include AngioScan, long axial length normative database, Anterior segment adapter, angle measurement, and corneal measurement.
Another notable product is the Oculus Myopia Master which is a great instrument in diagnosing and treating Myopia. “The questionnaire helps parents understand why their child is short sighted and what they can do to help. An advanced algorithm helps predict the possible increase in Myopia that could occur in the child without intervention. The device can also show the positive effect of treatment, slowing down their progressive Myopia,” explained Amanda.
Myopia management made easy; the Myopia Master is designed using seven simple steps to manage all key data with just one measurement process. Refraction, axial length and keratometry are the main measures required for professional myopia management, but only in combination do they allow for individualised treatment and counselling. The standalone device is fast and contactless, delivering a measurement process that takes less than two minutes. The acute data analysis is paramount when compared to normative growth curves that are calculated from more than 20,000 eyes. Using a traffic light system, the Myopia Master software assists the practitioner using the near-work calculator which is a helpful gadget for computing the near-work risk factor. Based on the evaluation, the software then provides recommended treatment options which can be customisable to the client. Perfect for parents, the software also produces a take home report alongside regular follow-up examinations based off the success of the treatment.
COVID-19 was a difficult time to navigate across all industries. Amanda explained how the company was affected and how it has moved forward since. “During lockdown
many Opticians were working harder with often longer hours as frontline workers whilst doing an amazing job for the public. During this time ensuring the clinic remained up and running was critical. Service became key, so to support this we have since launched better service packages and are continually working to shorten the service SLAs. During lockdown many people re-evaluated their work/life balance and many have come out of this wanting more time with loved ones and more flexibility at work. In light of this, we now offer more opportunities for hybrid and remote working as well as flexible hours.”
In an ever-changing world where the benefits of new technology platforms are constantly improving and adapting, Birmingham Optical has further reviewed how its teams work to ensure it is maximising its efficiencies to free up more time for employees to do more interesting aspects of their job or to consider new roles which have been created that better suit the new way of working.
In closing, we asked Amanda what plans the company had for the future, she answered. “To grow as a technology and service provider, ensure our staff are knowledgeable and supported to do a great job every time, and respond to our customer demands. We are very grateful to all our customers old and new, many of which have been buying from us for many years and have become friends of Birmingham Optical. We never take anything for granted and feel very privileged to have established such great relations.”
