With home and garden renovations on the rise, more homeowners are opting for personalised designs using sustainable materials – think custom carpentry, handmade tiles, and coloured rooflights.
At the forefront of full renovations, extensions, and kitchen refurbishments, Structure One Timberworks has been delivering high-quality projects since 2006, and has been an approved kitchen installer for over 15 years. Founded by Darren Noble, this family-run business operates across Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas, offering expert craftsmanship in both residential and commercial spaces.
A standout project last year was the design and build of a fully fitted commercial gym and co-working space, which ended up being a finalist in the London Construction Awards 2024. Designed with a ‘forest railway’ theme, it combined heritage features with contemporary biophilic design - exposed beams, open-plan spaces, ergonomic standing desks, and sustainable materials.
2024 was another successful year for the company that saw it expand into landscaping, healthcare properties, and also kitchens. From solid wood cabinets to custom splashbacks, Structure One creates bespoke kitchens tailored to your space. “We’re also growing our team to take on more complex projects, including fully managed kitchen renovations and larger extensions from planning to completion,” added Darren.

Primarily designed as an ‘occasional’ floor box, the outlet sits flush in a tiled floor area. When closed the SIMONBOX is watertight, allowing tiled areas to be wet washed when required. This pioneering product has been consistently specified by consulting engineers and architects for a wide range of commercial and domestic projects. End users include John Lewis, NEXT Home Store, and Heathrow and Gatwick Airports.

In the ever-evolving timber build sector, the introduction of Protek ESP Panels marks a significant advancement in material preservation and sustainability. Protek ESP (Edge Sealant Protection) Panels is designed to combat one of the most persistent issues in timber construction: water damage and delamination.
Water ingress is a major concern for plywood and other sheet materials used in construction. When water penetrates the edges of these materials, it can lead to swelling, warping, and ultimately, structural failure. Protek ESP Panels address this problem head-on by providing a robust sealant that protects the edges of plywood, OSB, MDF, and other sheet materials from moisture. This not only extends the lifespan of the materials but also enhances their structural integrity.
Additionally, the product has been rigorously tested and approved by BM TRADA, ensuring it meets high standards of performance and reliability.
The application process is straightforward, requiring only a brush or roller to apply the sealant to the edges of the panels. This ease of use makes it an attractive option for builders and contractors looking to improve
efficiency on-site. Furthermore, the sealant dries quickly, allowing for faster project completion times.
Protek ESP Panels is available in various colours, including a distinctive red that provides a clear visual indication of treated areas. This feature is particularly useful for building professionals and inspectors, ensuring compliance with waterresistance standards and regulations.
In conclusion, Protek ESP Panels represent a significant innovation in the timber build sector. By preventing water damage and delamination, they enhance the durability and longevity of timber materials, contributing to more sustainable and resilient construction practices. As the industry continues to prioritise sustainability, products like Protek ESP Panels will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of timber construction.

Metalcraft Architectural Engineering are specialists in predominantly bespoke metalwork fabrications, producing pieces to be housed in the retail, leisure and hospitality sectors.
Nestled in the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, Metalcraft was established some thirty years ago in 1995. From our humble beginnings in a small factory unit in Barnoldswick began the vision of creativity that has now forged our strengths and expertise that we possess today.
For Pantechnicon we were approached and challenged to assist with the final design, drawing, manufacture and installation of a bespoke spiral feature staircase which was to rise from the ground floor and extend past the mezzanine level and continue up to the first floor.
By embracing this unique project, we were committed to delivering the original aesthetic, visual, value and design passed to us by our client. Through the unity of our team, we overcame the multiple engineering challenges we encountered whilst also adhering to the structural integrity calculations and building regulations required in this listed building.
The whole team effort involved to deliver this project as it was originally imagined and envisaged, along with the satisfaction that it brings ‘is what it means’ to Metalcraft.

Lloyd from the QLeisure in Albourne near Brighton is building striking A-frame lodges that stand out from the typical accommodations in the area. These eco-friendly structures are attracting a lot of interest in the recent months due to their quality and sustainability factor, popular demand with the new generation travellers.
The lodges are suitable for all year-round use, so the comfort they provide can become more and more widespread along the whole of UK.
This famous Estonian brand is imported by Avrame UK. The kits are typically designed for 2-4 person assembly. Unlike homes built from prefabricated panels, Avrame kits feature precisely cut C24 grade timber pieces and joints, roofing panels and windows, shipped nationwide directly to your door.
Due to his busy schedule Lloyd enlisted a local company to help. Within three months, both lodges were erected. Now he’s adding the finishing touches inside and landscaping, aiming for an early spring opening.
With steep roofs ideal for solar panels, the lodges could reach 90% electricity self-sufficiency. Their large windows promise abundant afternoon and evening sunlight, creating inviting spaces for future visitors.

The green light has been given for construction to commence on the site of an old public house in the heart of Sunderland. The former Mill House Inn on Southwick Road, which was renamed the Halfway House after World War II, will be converted into seven flats and a staff accommodation unit, which will offer 24/7 support.
Plans submitted by Bright Ideas Development to Sunderland City Council have been approved to convert the facility, which will offer supported housing to those with complex needs and help vulnerable people who find themselves homeless. Whilst the site has remained neglected for some time, Bright Ideas has plans to convert the Victorian building into

During Rural Housing Week, Housing Plus Group is celebrating the completion of an ambitious project to provide new homes for affordable rent and shared ownership in a Shropshire village.
The 20 homes in Parry Close, off Ruyton Road, in Baschurch, have been built exclusively for people with a local connection to the village.
Shrewsbury-based construction firm, TC Homes, which formally handed over the development in May.
A former member of the Royal Corps of Signals, who switched to carpentry after leaving the Army, now runs his own building company covering the West Riding area of Yorkshire and is making a name for himself fitting out property renovations using CaberMDF, as well as other panel products from the West Fraser range.
North Build Leeds was set up by Van Midgley five years ago and now tackles a variety of conversions as well as general building repairs and improvements, purchasing the high performance
MDF and CaberDek flooring from different builders’ merchants in the city, depending on price and the locality his team are working in.
Van explained, “While I left the army with a qualification in telecommunications, I always had an interest in building and would count myself as an ‘old school’ joiner, who can pitch a roof if necessary – as well as carrying out kitchen fitting to a very high standard, which is one of the second-fix applications where I use a lot of the CaberMDF, sometimes ordering 20 sheets at a time. When I’ve got a job coming up, I will put out a cutting list to the merchants I use and see who comes back with the best price. At the moment, I am employing four people full time as well as using a number of subbies, including an electrician and a plumber.”
All West Fraser panel products produced in the UK are net carbon negative and manufactured in mills that have obtained the coveted environmental ISO 14001 accreditation. Responsibly sourced, the panels are FSC® (C012533) certified and created from locally grown timber, cutting embodied carbon from transportation.

Spring is the season of awakening and renewal as days get brighter and longer. This need to reset typically applies to our homes, too, with DIY and home improvements high on the seasonal agenda.
Whilst it might give a welcome boost to refresh the soft furnishings and add spring colours to the living room and call it a day, dealing with the more practical jobs in our home will bring a bigger sense of relief, so try to tackle these first to remove some weight from the mental load.
Noel Fok, CEO and co-founder of EcoAir, leading manufacturer of air treatment products, says, “Our bathrooms are one of the most frequented rooms in our homes and therefore come under a lot of daily wear and tear. Keeping them functional, clean and pleasant to spend time in should be a priority for both your own and your home’s health.”
“Unlike other rooms in the house, your bathroom goes through drastic temperature, humidity and air quality changes every day. Being aware of these fluctuations and the problems they can throw up is essential for maintaining a clean and healthy space – a priority given that it is the room we use to keep ourselves clean too.”

We commissioned independent testing on PIR insulation frictionfitted between rafters and were stunned when we saw the result –the roof performed 179% WORSE than expected!
When the insulation boards were re-fitted using Insulfix Track the roof rig delivered the expected thermal performance.
Insulfix Track is designed to make the job of fitting insulation boards between rafters as quick, simple, and effective as possible. Track firmly fixes the insulation boards between rafters without the need for battens or cans of spray foam. It allows offcuts to be fitted –improving sustainability by using more of the expensive insulation rather than throwing it in the skip.
Airtightness, thermal imagery and HTC (Heat Transfer Coefficient) testing were carried out to determine the thermal performance of an insulated roof rig. HTC is being proposed as a method of testing the real-world performance of new and existing buildings in line with building regulations.
The full independent test report is available on our website. If you’d like to find out more about using Insulfix Track to lock in the thermal performance of your insulation, we’d love to hear from you.

Griff Thomas, MD for GTEC & Heatly, part of the United Living Group, comments on David Lammy’s climate crisis speech
Foreign Secretary, David Lammy’s first major foreign policy speech, was a sobering reminder that the impact of climate change will be felt by us all if we don't do more to tackle it. I applaud the seriousness of his words, which highlighted the true implications of continued rising temperatures, including displaced communities and a worsening migrant situation as many more people are forced from their homes.
Lammy has vowed to make tackling the climate and nature crisis, ‘central to all the Foreign Office does,’ recognising that these issues are the core of many other areas of foreign policy, likening them a similar threat as terrorism and viewing
extreme weather events as ‘failures in politics, regulation and international cooperation.’
Framing it in this way will hopefully communicate the urgency of the issue to those who still view the climate crisis as a distant problem that doesn’t affect them. Lammy is keen for the UK to lead the charge in this area, forging a Global Clean Power Alliance. This clear and serious messaging is refreshing and very different to the previous government, and I hope it is now followed through with consistent and robust policy.

Leading manufacturer of bio-based building materials, Indinature, was delighted to announce that it was to be the headline sponsor for the Changeworks Connect Conference which was held on the 28th February 2025, Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh.
Changeworks is Scotland’s leading environmental charity which has been developing solutions for low carbon living over the past 35 years.
A key theme of the conference will be how to retrofit homes to make them more energy efficient. Indinature is a key driver behind decarbonising the construction sector with its award-winning insulation materials made from industrial hemp manufactured at its purpose-built Mill in Jedburgh.
be used at scale in both new build and retrofit projects. It can replace conventional mineral wool insulation in the majority of building projects.
Architects are on the front line when it comes to achieving net zero carbon and reversing the status quo in an age where buildings contribute to around 40% of global energyrelated carbon emissions. As the Royal Institute of British Architects notes, “The climate emergency is the biggest challenge facing our planet and our profession. To have significant impact, we need to turn warm words into meaningful actions.”

Geopolitical instability, economic uncertainty and an underlying energy crisis are constraints that only reinforce the need for urgent measures to address the sustainability of our built environment. Architects have the capacity to embed and encourage sustainable design strategies at each work stage. They can help their clients reach net zero by creating buildings that have no net carbon emissions during their construction and operation. This applies not only to new buildings but to retrofitting existing
Choices made at the design stage are critical, contributing directly to the net zero goal. Using sustainable, natural, low-carbon building materials, such as timber, is crucial and allows carbon to be sequestered within the structure. Durable, high-quality materials will reduce long-term maintenance and replacement, creating buildings that last and lock up carbon. A building’s lifespan will also be extended by building in flexibility so it can be adapted to new uses in the future.

An interactive event hosted in Brussels on 24th September will shine a light on attitudes towards news reporting and stakeholder communication about climate change. Bringing together leading figures from the worlds of news reporting and communications to discuss how the climate story is changing their work, the event will focus on three main topics about climate change reporting:
▲ Can we be balanced about climate change?
▲ Can we grow the publics for climate change news?
▲ Whose facts matter in the climate change story?
‘Bad news avoidance’ is fuelling a decline in news audiences, while 80% of international press reports about climate change have been classed as negative. It seems that people are turning away from stories about the greatest existential threat to humanity at the moment when informed reporting that leads to action are more important than ever.
At the same time, misinformation campaigns are spreading doubt about the truth of climate change communication or proposed solutions. Research suggests that around the world, over three quarters of the population are concerned about false or misleading news about climate change.
Attendance online is free, with the option to submit questions to the panel via the chat function. Sign up here to secure your place.

Tamworth-based Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has urged caution regarding reducing gaps at hinges, following an accident at a school in Surrey involving a five-year-old boy. During a resulting UK Health and Safety Executive investigation into the incident, it was revealed that the boy’s hand slipped and went into the reducing hinge gap of a doorset in the school; there was no guard installed and the incident led to the tip of his middle finger becoming detached. In a newer building at the school, hinge guards had been fitted on the doorsets. The trust was prosecuted under Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, duty of care to persons other than employees, and in October this year,
was fined £6,000 and ordered to pay an additional £6,875.70 in costs.
Ultimate responsibility for safety within and about a premises lies with the owner or manager, but it is important to note that maintenance providers also have a legal obligation to identify and inform their clients about the safety of doors, gates and barriers they are repairing or maintaining; where possible, they are required to leave the system (hand it back to the client) in a safe condition.

A custom housebuilder, whose focus is on achieving excellent energy performance coupled with high environmental standards, has adopted the use of SterlingOSB Zero from the range of West Fraser, in particular favouring the well proven panel product’s superior standards of airtightness. Makar Ltd designs and manufactures a range of affordable homes, one off exemplar homes and commercial properties.
Established at Clachandreggy near Inverness in 2002,
The challenges facing local authorities and housing officers have never been more real as they seek to tackle societal, fuel poverty and climate-related issues. An ageing housing stock and a growing population that must be provided with affordable housing are key concerns; poorly performing homes pose particular problems. Frequently, it is architects who can provide the advice and solutions needed. Architects bring the breadth of experience and knowledge necessary to create homes that are fit for the future. By taking a holistic approach to design, they consider not only spaces, aesthetics and structures but also the social, economic, and environmental context. They can help local authorities meet ever more complex regulatory demands and the rigorous sustainability goals that relate to every facet of the built environment, be it new build, retrofit or wider issues associated with placemaking. For architects, the process involves creative thinking, navigating planning and building regulations and employing up-to-date knowledge of materials and techniques.
Meeting sustainability targets and the threats associated with climate change at a time when around 95% of the British population lives in areas where local authorities have declared a climate emergency* is crucial. With resilience now a key consideration in urban planning, risks of overheating, flooding and damage to buildings must be addressed from day one.

CorkSol UK, the UK’s only distributor of SprayCork, a sustainable wall coating with insulating properties, was recently selected to enhance the energy efficiency of a 1930s semi-detached house in York after the HomeLINK environmental sensor from Aico reported significant heat loss.
Originally constructed from solid brick with cracked rendering, the 1930s house was inefficient and displayed an exceptionally low energy performance certificate of D (60) due to the poor insulation of the walls. In support of the EPC results, the HomeLINK environmental sensor also concluded a high risk of heat loss from three key rooms and a time to lose (TTL) average of 1oC every 28 minutes.
made to use SprayCork from CorkSol. This also enabled a perfect opportunity to test the product and its benefits, producing a set of data that supports its claims.
The Aico HomeLINK environmental sensor then tested the effectiveness of the new rendering by measuring the heat loss across the same three rooms as previous and the TTL with results confirming significant improvement.
After receiving these results, the owner of the home seeked possible solutions to improve the energy efficiency of the building. In order to reach the desired look whilst addressing the insulation issues, the decision was
