Direct Hoist has done it again. The high-flying construction hoist sales and hire specialist has won the BCR Building Excellence Award.
For over 10 years, the Midlands-based firm has been at the forefront of construction hoist technology, providing GEDA machines and bringing innovative Italian Electroelsa machinery to the British market, as UK distributor.
Established in 2014 by Managing Director, Rob Wilson, the company started as a passion project in Rob’s garage. Today, Direct Hoist has four locations and 30m unit premises to accommodate their own training centre, for bespoke training and NVQ Level 2 in Hoist Installation.

Lloyd from the QLeisure in Albourne near Brighton is building striking A-frame lodges that stand out from the typical accommodations in the area. Housing association celebrates completion of affordable homes in Shropshire village
During Rural Housing Week, Housing Plus Group is celebrating the completion of an ambitious project to provide new homes for affordable rent and shared ownership in a Shropshire village.
The 20 homes in Parry Close, off Ruyton Road, in Baschurch, have been built exclusively for people with a local connection to the village.
Shrewsbury-based construction firm, TC Homes, which formally handed over the development in May.
A former member of the Royal Corps of Signals, who switched to carpentry after leaving the Army, now runs his own building company covering the West Riding area of Yorkshire and is making a name for himself fitting out property renovations using CaberMDF, as well as other panel products from the West Fraser range.
North Build Leeds was set up by Van Midgley five years ago and now tackles a variety of conversions as well as general building repairs and improvements, purchasing the high performance
MDF and CaberDek flooring from different builders’ merchants in the city, depending on price and the locality his team are working in.
Van explained, “While I left the army with a qualification in telecommunications, I always had an interest in building and would count myself as an ‘old school’ joiner, who can pitch a roof if necessary – as well as carrying out kitchen fitting to a very high standard, which is one of the second-fix applications where I use a lot of the CaberMDF, sometimes ordering 20 sheets at a time. When I’ve got a job coming up, I will put out a cutting list to the merchants I use and see who comes back with the best price. At the moment, I am employing four people full time as well as using a number of subbies, including an electrician and a plumber.”

Foreign Secretary, David Lammy’s first major foreign policy speech, was a sobering reminder that the impact of climate change will be felt by us all if we don't do more to tackle it. DHF issues warning following school accident
Tamworth-based Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has urged caution regarding reducing gaps at hinges, following an accident at a school in Surrey involving a five-year-old boy. During a resulting UK Health and Safety Executive investigation into the incident, it was revealed that the boy’s hand slipped and went into the reducing hinge gap of a doorset in the school; there was no guard installed and the incident led to the tip of his middle finger becoming detached. In a newer building at the school, hinge guards had been fitted on the doorsets. The trust was prosecuted under Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, duty of care to persons other than employees, and in October this year,
was fined £6,000 and ordered to pay an additional £6,875.70 in costs.
Ultimate responsibility for safety within and about a premises lies with the owner or manager, but it is important to note that maintenance providers also have a legal obligation to identify and inform their clients about the safety of doors, gates and barriers they are repairing or maintaining; where possible, they are required to leave the system (hand it back to the client) in a safe condition.

Watkin Jones to develop 295 new homes in St Helens
Watkin Jones, the UK’s leading developer and manager of residential properties for rent, is pleased to announce it has agreed to develop and deliver 295 new homes on behalf of Torus, the largest affordable housing provider in the North West of England, which will be partly funded by Homes England.

CorkSol UK improves 1930s home ability to retain heat by up to 50%
CorkSol UK, the UK’s only distributor of SprayCork, a sustainable wall coating with insulating properties, was recently selected to enhance the energy efficiency of a 1930s semi-detached house in York after the HomeLINK environmental sensor from Aico reported significant heat loss.
Originally constructed from solid brick with cracked rendering, the 1930s house was inefficient and displayed an exceptionally low energy performance certificate of D (60) due to the poor insulation of the walls. In support of the EPC results, the HomeLINK environmental sensor also concluded a high risk of heat loss from three key rooms and a time to lose (TTL) average of 1oC every 28 minutes.
