Aqua Safety Showers: Emergency Showers & Eye Wash Stations The importance of workers safety on chemical sites cannot be overstated. These sites involve handling and processing hazardous materials that can pose serious risks to human health and safety. It is crucial to have proper safety measures. Safety showers are one such imperative measure for several reasons: 1) Immediate response to chemical exposure: Chemical accidents can cause injuries like burns, eye irritation, or chemical absorption through the skin. Safety showers provide workers with a quick and effective means of rinsing off the hazardous chemicals, reducing the chances of severe damage and minimizing the extent of the injury. 2) Preventing further spread and contamination: Following a chemical accident, it is crucial to contain the spill and prevent its spread to other areas or individuals. Safety showers help in limiting the extent of contamination by allowing workers to wash off the harmful substances before they have a chance to spread. 3) Emergency preparedness: Accidents can happen even with proper safety procedures in place. Having safety showers readily available throughout the chemical site demonstrates

a commitment to emergency preparedness. 4) Employee morale and wellbeing: The presence of safety showers shows that employers prioritize the wellbeing and safety of their workforce. This commitment to worker safety enhances employee morale and creates a positive work environment. In conclusion, safety showers are imperative on chemical sites due to their ability to provide immediate response to chemical exposure. Their presence is instrumental in minimizing the risks associated with working in chemical facilities, protecting workers from harm, and creating a safe and secure work environment. Zetamotion: Innovative AI-driven Quality Control as a Service (QCaaS) provider Zetamotion is a groundbreaking, innovative AI-driven Quality Control as a Service (QCaaS) provider. Our QCaaS platform is designed to assist manufacturers in automating their quality control processes at scale. UK manufacturers spend up to 40% of their sales revenues on quality control (QC), a staggering amount every year. To reduce these costs, companies have begun to adopt digital tools, such as real-time data from automated QC systems and advanced analytics. However, a recent survey found that only 30% of manufacturers have adopted these technologies. This puts the remainder at risk of falling behind in the global shift towards Industry 4.0. Unfortunately, many of these adopters are hitting the ceiling on the capabilities of the solutions they have invested in. Current automated QC tools can be inflexible, do not scale and are often expensive, making it difficult to keep up with changing product designs and customer demands. In our discussions with clients, we have often seen this reflected in their ‘burnt ground’ stories. ‘Yes, we tried computer vision. It did not go very well...’ What is often not delivered is the ‘last mile,’ the push from an easily attainable 80% accuracy rate to a far more demanding 99%+, which is orders of magnitude more challenging yet essential for manufacturers. Our approach is inherently different. Unlike many

8

faceless tools available for download, engaging with Zetamotion means partnering with a team of real people, who understand and address your pain points and work towards achieving your goals. This relationship-focused approach ensures a smooth onboarding process and ongoing support tailored to the ever-evolving manufacturing and QC landscapes. As hardware-agnostic as is feasible, we interface with existing network and IoT infrastructure to be part of the overall production solution. We are very much aware of our customers and manufacturers in general security consciousness and Intellectual Property rights concerns, which is why our QCaaS platform operates all inspection fully on premises. Our innovative and patented AI platform was designed from the ground up to be scalable, adaptable, and flexible. New products, new materials, and modified designs can be rapidly onboarded and put into production in as little as 24 hours, without asking manufacturers to amass thousands of images and data points per product variant and months of machine learning/training and fine-tuning. By leveraging our novel AI machine-learning techniques

and our synthetic data approach, Zetamotion can effectively handle diverse materials and products, including those with nonuniform appearances or low production volumes. Zetamotion reduces QC time by as much as 95%+, achieving a 99%+ accuracy in defect identification from the onset. This leads to up to a 50% improvement in product yield and operational cost reduction, while also cutting waste by over half – a substantial contribution to national sustainability goals. This comprehensive approach ensures manufacturers not only realise increased yield and reduced waste but also optimise the deployment of skilled labour. In the shifting sands of the manufacturing sector, Zetamotion emerges as a stable and innovative partner. Our AI-driven QCaaS platform not only improves and streamlines the QC process, it allows for greater quality output and valuable process insights whilst also aligning with manufacturers’ sustainability goals, offering a win-win solution for manufacturers aiming for efficiency and environmental responsibility. By opting for Zetamotion, their Quality Control Partner of choice, manufacturers are not just adopting a tool but embracing a service dedicated to production health, growth and improvement. contact@zetamotion.com https://www.zetamotion.com https://www.linkedin.com/company/zetamotion

Solar Power: A new focal point in Laser Cutting How The Laser Cutting Co. is slashing energy usage, costs, and saving their customers money with their latest large-scale solar panel installation project!

consistently striving to improve their products and services for the benefit of both their customers and the environment.

Established in 1981, The Laser Cutting Co. has been proudly offering its bespoke laser cutting and metal profiling services to industries across the UK. Now over 4 decades later, The Laser Cutting Co. and its sister company Charles Day are thrilled to announce their latest green initiative – a large-scale solar panel installation across both sites.

This investment also involved maintaining practices and regulations that were consistent with their green ideology, and to make consistent strides towards attaining an official ISO14001; an environmental guidance system that indicates an organisation or business is adhering to environmentally friendly codes and practices, which the business hopes to attain this year.

Rooted deeply in the Sheffield community, The Laser Cutting Co. are committed to sustaining Sheffield’s reputation for being the greenest city in the UK;

Due for its full installation in May, Operations Director, James Day, and Sales and Business Development Director, Charlie Day, made the decision to further improve The Laser Cutting Co.’s green credentials to gain better control over power costs and to pass these savings onto their customers. James Day, The Laser Cutting Co.’s Operations Director, had this to say: “It makes perfect sense to put our roof to good use and harness solar power, not just from an environmental point of view, but a cost control one as well. By investing in solar panels, we gain better control of our operational costs whilst significantly reducing our environmental impact.”

Due to cover both factory roofs with an impressive 496 solar panels, one solar panel alone is able to generate up to 203kWp of power! Covering approximately 20,000 square feet of roofing across The Laser Cutting Co. facility, this installation is a huge step forward for the company and its 4-decadelong legacy. If you’re looking for expert laser cutting and metal profiling by one of the leading providers in the country, why not get in touch with The Laser Cutting Co. to help you achieve greater efficiencies and reduce your environmental impact. Celebrated Waste Management Company of the Month

Making the UK greener today I

n this issue of Sustainability Today, we are delighted to welcome CRJ Services Ltd as our Celebrated Waste Management Company of the Month.

The UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has introduced a new UK waste reduction policy, purposefully designed to reduce waste by 2030. European countries like Germany and Switzerland currently outperform the UK with streamlined waste management practices and this policy will allow the UK to play catch-up. In the race towards the UK Government’s 2050 net zero targets, this new policy will shift focus towards phasing out landfill usage and incinerators for all recyclable waste and place more onus on manufacturers, importers and retailers to cover the costs of recycling. This further incentivises companies to reduce waste much earlier in the design stage, through compostable packaging for example, and fully brings the UK into the green economy. CRJ Services is a comprehensive waste, recycling and forestry equipment provider and is one of the largest operating throughout the UK and Ireland, delivering quality machinery and reliable service to more than 300 customers. Established in 1999, the company is looking forward to spending 2024 celebrating its 25th anniversary, with the opening of a new engineering workshop Facility.

IV

The machinery solutions provider has seen rapid growth over the last three years as waste and recycling management becomes a key priority for many industries. The Knutsford site in Cheshire is set to expand with a new, second engineering workshop facility nearby to manage the growing demand for the hire and sale of mobile and static processing machines. Working across the waste management, forestry and quarrying sectors, CRJ operates a hire fleet of over 130 mobile processing machines, designed for shredding, screening, washing and sorting a wide range of waste streams. These include: shredders, trommels, flat deck screeners, density separators, eddy current separators, water baths, and picking stations. The Cheshire site holds an expansive stock of spare parts, in excess of £2.0M for all hire and purchased equipment. The company places great emphasis on customer service and has field engineers on standby for a rapid-tiered response to machinery malfunction, with on-site visits planned within same day or maximum within 24 hours. “Many of our competitors are also yellow plant machinery suppliers but the difference is that we specialise in our waste management machinery and as an added bonus, we have an expansive hire fleet capacity. We are proud of our heritage in the waste and recycling industry and intend to remain specialists in the sector. We will never just hire or sell a piece of yellow plant or an attachment, that’s not what we are do, we are specialists.”

“We have seen a shift towards hire preferences in the industry with waste companies working on short to long– term contracts and needing flexible hire options to suit. We are happy to cater for hire options or for companies with machine purchasing budgets.” “The other trend we have observed is companies moving towards static machinery, which is powered by electricity, compared to diesel mobile machinery. Ever mindful of reducing carbon emissions, we can also provide a hybrid shredder powered by electric motors, rather than a diesel engine.” “Unlike other companies, we don’t just supply machinery and walk away. We are invested in moving the industry towards more sustainable best practice. We have analysed seven years of waste collection data across organic, food and residual waste and dry recycling. Shockingly, we found that from across 10 of the biggest local councils (by population), six had worryingly recorded a reduction in dry recycling since 2020 and more disturbingly, seven had seen an increase in waste to landfill/incineration.” “Along with the new targeted Defra waste reduction policy, there still needs to be a more cohesive, standardised push towards recycling from central government.”

Celebrated Waste Management Company of the Month

“One of the innovative methods we have looked at is a dust suppression method when shredding household furniture like sofas. Many sofas contain toxic, carcinogenic Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) which are invisible and harm human health and the wider environment. The Environment Agency has brought in legislation around the storage and disposal of such furniture for this reason and our lab-tested dust suppression meets the latest compliance,” explained Andrew Clarkson, CRJ Finance Director.

“We have a four-tiered, fool proof approach to any engineering call-outs. Our engineers will firstly see if they can ascertain the problem over the phone, and by using the telematics diagnostic software installed on every machine that we hire and sell. this can be elevated to a physical on-site visit if needed same day or within 24 hours maximum. The telematics software on our machines keeps unnecessary vehicle movements, as well as customer downtime, to a minimum and this is managed stringently. Beyond this, our product specialists can support and as a last resort, we will even go back to the manufacturers if all else fails, but this is rare. We don’t want customers experiencing downtime so will endeavour to help them as quickly as possible.” “We are confident in the quality of our machinery but are always on standby for our customers in the harsh environments in which they operate,” added Andrew.

CRJ has a dedicated customer-centric approach, with all of its customers from Cornwall to the Highlands, with expert, knowledgeable sales staff and directors. Coined as ‘added value,’ customers are secure in the knowledge that experienced field engineers can deal with repairs and maintenance.

CRJ has every reason to be confident with stalwart machinery like the slow-speed Haas Tyron shredder. The HAAS Tyron is used across a wide range of applications from biomass, commercial and industrial waste, mattresses, metals, plastics, tree roots, wood and many more. It is easy to see why it is such a popular shredder. The HAAS Tyron is a powerful, twin-shaft, slow speed shredder, with a robust and renowned strength. CRJ has 32 of the Tyron 2000XL 2.0 models in their comprehensive hire fleet. This is Haas’ signature mobile shredder and is popular for a variety of reasons, including its versatility in various applications, its ease of change of settings depending on application, and the unique independent twin-shaft reverse mechanism, which protects against fibrous materials causing blockages. This powerhouse

machine has a wide 1,400mm outfeed belt with discharge height up to 4,800mm, easy on-site manoeuvrability, low fuel consumption, enhanced safety features such as the traffic light system, remote-control adjustments, and the ground level maintenance chamber access doors. “Our HAAS shredder continues to be popular across the industry and has remained our bread-and-butter product but we are now spreading the word about our Pronar machinery, as we are now proud dealers for their trommel range. The Pronar MPB 20.55 is a mobile trommel screen, available for hire or purchase. It can be used across a wide range of applications, such as: metals, skip waste, tree roots, wood, biomass, commercial and industrial waste, construction and demolition waste, organic waste, through to paper and cardboard and Japanese Knotweed. It is a robust, easily to maintain and operate machine that can compete on price and performance with the industry leaders and compliments CRJ’s existing portfolio perfectly.” “Looking ahead to the future, our new, second workshop facility will allow us to meet growing demand across the waste management and forestry sectors as the UK heads towards greater sustainability best practice.” CRJ Services will be at the following 2024 trade shows with waste management machinery on hand for demonstrations: Scot Plant: 26th-27th April 2024, Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh RWM: 11th-12th September 2024, NEC, Birmingham APF: 19th–21st September, Ragley Estate, Warwickshire. Pumps & Valves Company of the Year

Leading the centrifugal pum

I

n this issue of Sustainability Today, we are delighted to select PEMO PUMPS as our Pump & Valves Company of the Year.

“Our company philosophy is to always offer customised products, following the market and the opportunities that lie ahead. In this regard, we have developed on average two – three new pump models every year in order to offer highly competitive products for each specific application.”

We have featured PEMO PUMPS previously as our Pump Manufacturing Company of the Month and wish to extend our congratulations to the whole team for reaching the company’s 76th anniversary during 2023.

“Since PEMO PUMPS does not have a series production, we can offer over 3,000 pump models with fully customised hydraulics and materials. Therefore, our goal is to follow the customer from the design to the start-up of the plant, providing a product designed and customised exclusively for the application and conditions of that plant. In addition, we have a warehouse with over 10,000 components, which allows us to solve customer requests quickly and without delay.”

PEMO PUMPS is a brand of Perissinotto S.p.A. and was established in 1947 by Antonio Perissinotto.

been a very intense 12 months: the world of pumps is in constant turmoil and our focus as a sustainability-oriented company is slowly taking shape – this is thanks largely to compliance with ESG issues and the ethical program undertaken by the company.”

Illustrious history After the Second World War, the pumps were utilised in the marble and granite cutting processes, using sand as part of the abrasive mix to further the expansion of the construction industry. By the 1970’s, PEMO PUMPS successfully diversified into new markets such as the steel industry and during the 1980’s, enjoyed a move into the chemical and wastewater treatment sectors. Throughout the decades, the dedicated team further developed its pump portfolio, welcoming the dawning of innovative new technology and materials that showed increasing resistance to abrasion and corrosive agents. We caught up with Massimo Ghio, Sales Area Manager at Perissinotto S.p.A. PEMO PUMPS for further insight, “It has

“Despite the ongoing difficult geo-political situations, we try to move towards a diversification of markets that allows us to be appreciated across the main world markets.” “2023 was an important year, where we were able to confirm the good results of the post-COVID years and increase turnover by more than 10% over 2022. We expect a slight slowdown in the first quarter of 2024, due to a structural contraction in global markets.” “We have successfully invested in a new warehouse, which will expand our production area by about 2,000m2 – this will allow us to concentrate further on the production chain of our flagship products. Moreover, we have embarked on a path of internal reorganisation of various departments, with important investments for the purchase of new latest generation machinery for mechanical processing.”

Established pump markets PEMO PUMPS is active across many sectors including the following: t Anaerobic digestion processes: Used in the biogas production sector, where its pumps are used to load and recirculate OFMSW to anaerobic digesters t Ceramic industry: Where the liquid slip has highly abrasive characteristics as it combines a high concentration of solid product and a temperature that can reach 80°C t Chemical industry: Where its pumps can be customised with highly corrosion-resistant materials, they are often preferred for their robustness in applications where the mixture contains solid particles t Mining, Quarries and Aggregate materials washing: Where our pumps are used in feeding separating hydro-cyclons, floatation systems and to transfer slurries in ponds, yellowcake applications and water treatment plants etc t Filter-Press Feeding: This is an application where in most cases PEMO pumps has no competition, thanks to our DC (double stage) and TC (triple stage) pumps

Pumps & Valves Company of the Year

mp industry for 76 years New pump markets PEMO PUMPS has been busy throughout 2023 with strengthening brand awareness through the major European trade fairs including: Bio360 EXPO (Nantes), Pollutech (Lyon), The World Biogas Expo and RWM & Letsrecycle Live in Birmingham. PEMO PUMPS already has and emerging presence in the aggregates, tunnelling and stone processing sectors, across the UK and French markets where the pumps are used for transferring slurry and feeding filter presses. Through the trade fairs, PEMO PUMPS is hoping to branch out further into the biogas and biomethane production chains and in fact, any sectors that require robust pumps. Well-deserved success During 2023, PEMO PUMPS celebrated its 42,000th pump placed onto the world market, across more than 100 countries, demonstrating why we have chosen this company as our Pump and Valves Company of the Year. Cutting-edge centrifugal pumps PEMO PUMPS has focused on designing advanced centrifugal pumps, with semi-open impellers and anticlogging volutes that enable the transfer of highly viscous substrate containing fibres, filaments and large solid parts.

This is highly advantageous over standard single-screw pumps, with the unique ‘HARDALLOY PEMO’ wear-resistant superalloy. Customers love the fact that the maintenance intervals are now only every five-six years, due to this advanced technology, which is welcomed during the costof-living crisis. The Italian based powerhouse prides itself on a premium pump portfolio, with different flow rates up to 2,000m3/h and pressures of up to 24 bar. The range includes rubberised bodies and impellers, with ‘top of the class’ superalloy: PEMO HARDALLOY superalloy demonstrating high abrasion resistance and hardness up to 800 Brinell. This ensures excellent abrasion resistance even with fluids with very high concentrations of solids and pressures up to 24 bar. Moreover, PEMO PUMPS can provide the maximum abrasive particle size that the pump can transfer and the concentration of solids in the fluid for each of its pumps. The future of PEMO PUMPS We asked Massimo Ghio what the future plans were for this Italian pump heavyweight, including sustainability best practice, “For some years now, the company has been committed to minimising the environmental impact of both its production departments and offices, with particular attention to the reduction of waste and industrial waste and their proper disposal. With the aim of becoming energy independent by 2030, we are planning new investments in solar panels, which currently meet 35% of our electricity needs.” “For the mobility of personnel, we are orienting our fleet towards electric vehicles and we are also investing in new machinery that will allow us to increase efficiency and the ability to produce in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable way.”

“In addition, we are always trying to improve our product to ensure greater durability in the process of use, reducing downtime for maintenance as much as possible.” “In the short term, we are planning a steady growth of the company, both in terms of production and new hires. In recent years, we have increased our team by 25%, focusing on trained technical figures and workshop staff.” “In the longer term, we are aiming for a greater internalisation of the company also in Oceania, the Middle East and South America, where, driven by mining, aggregate washing and recycling, we are aiming for growth in both numbers and specific skills.” “We are honoured to be selected for Pump and Valves Company of the Year. We would like to express our gratitude and take this opportunity to thank Sustainability Today for its constant commitment to research and promotion of activities aimed at making the future greener and more sustainable.” For more information on PEMO PUMPS, please see the website link below: www.pemopumps.com/en

Recycling Equipment Company of the Month

The high-performance, high-quality channel balers transforming the waste management sector I n this issue of Sustainability Today, we are delighted to feature Kadant PAAL Ltd as our Recycling Equipment Company of the Month.

There are multiple benefits to recycling waste materials, such as reducing waste pollution and primarily, reducing the need for raw material production in the first place.

Balers are hugely cost-effective within waste management, ensuring a safe, clean, and optimised operation, eliminating the need for larger storage areas. On an important sustainability note, balers naturally safeguard against recyclable waste materials ending up in landfill and also helps reduce air and water pollution at large. Lastly, waste balers comply with the latest environmental laws, reduce costs by up to 80% through maximising loads and reducing transport costs, save all-important space and offer concerted effort towards sustainable best practice. The Kadant PAAL Group is a result of the merger of four European Companies, PAAL, COMDEC, FAES and DICOM, with the recent addition of BALEMASTER USA. The experience within the group ensures that Kadant PAAL are best placed as a provider of proven, tried, and tested baling solutions. The UK branch of Kadant PAAL Limited, formally known as Dicom Ltd, was established in Great

Britain in 1981 and looks after the UK and Irish Markets. They are located on the Meadow Lane industrial estate in Alfreton, Derbyshire. Kadant PAAL UK manufactures its own DICOM Product range of popular vertical balers and waste compactors, distributing and installing the PAAL range of fully automatic horizontal balers and conveyors manufactured in Germany. With their own Technical and Design Team they can provide bespoke solutions with fabrication work manufactured at the factory based in Alfreton to suit all requirements. The mobile engineers are strategically placed across the country in the event of any mechanical difficulties providing a rapid response call out. Furthermore, the Remote Service Support (RSS) system remotely connects technical experts to the machine in question, with the ability to quickly diagnose the cause of faults, alarms or any performance related issues to avoid unnecessary downtime.

Panasonic introduces ZY Amicorp introduces ESG reporting and rating service Series to its Advanced Energy Recovery Ventilation range A P micorp Group has launched a new service line to help investors and businesses analyse, report and develop their Environmental, Social and Governance (‘ESG’) performance levels – and address mounting regulatory requirements.

The number of countries introducing mandatory ESG reporting around the world is increasing. In the European Union, financial markets are required to report their sustainable economic activities on an annual basis, as do large and listed companies. Other authorities have also acted on or are exploring similar ESG frameworks and standards, notably in the US, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

XIV

Amicorp ESG Services help asset and fund managers, institutional investors and businesses to quickly and easily comply with these tightening regulations and provide the support and insights needed to plan and build an ESG strategy that aligns with their goals and values.

An online platform provides an independent and auditable ESG report that can be shared with regulators, stakeholders and shareholders. It also provides an ESG rating and a light gap analysis using the latest industry benchmarks, to help businesses identify any shortcomings and highlight where improvements can be made. www.amicorp.com

anasonic Heating & Cooling Solutions is launching its new Advanced Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) ZY Series. The new series consists of an extended 9 model line-up including a 2,000m3/h model, all integrated with DC motors with independent control setting for air supply and exhaust. An ERV is essential to buildings to provide fresh filtered air inside. Through its ventilation system it ensures the air is not contaminated nor contains any odours potentially penetrating the new supply of air.

The units possess an external static pressure (ESP) advancing up to 150 Pa with an F7 grade filter built-in as standard. In addition to this, the new ZY series has an impressive recovery power of up to 83% of heat exchange efficiency. This high recovery rate further optimises cost and can be considered a sustainable solution. Incorporated into the new models is two backdraft shutters, unique to Panasonic. Its key role is to prevent

air flowing in the wrong direction when the ERV is turned off and not operating. Additionally, the ERV has three connection options available: group control with a maximum of two ERV systems, direct connection to field supply switch, and ERV operation in conjunction with heating and cooling systems. The ZY series also introduces a new remote controller. Information is clearly visible through a black light and white background whilst also containing a backbox as standard. The controller is available to be integrated with BMS through the RS485 terminal. www.aircon.panasonic.eu

Pumps & Valves

Redefining pumping in the biogas industry W

ith the UK Government’s 2050 Net-Zero targets looming, the full potential of the biogas industry is finally being realised. With over 600 anaerobic digestion (AD) plants now operating across the country and a phenomenal biogas capacity of 2,721 megawatts, this translates to annual greenhouse gas emission cuts of 1% (with predictions of 6% by 2030 if all organic waste is treated through AD). Biomethane is therefore a solid substitute for fossil natural gas and going forward, offers a fully decarbonisation of the gas industry. PEMO PUMPS was a resounding hit at this September’s RWM (part of ESS) Expo at the NEC, where the focus was on the importance of the circular economy. The team brought an example pump with them and were particularly interested in talking to customers from the biogas industry.

PEMO PUMPS are compliant with the European Community’s Waste Directive, through its leading OFMSW treatment phases and supply compost to agriculture and floriculture. The OFMSW treatment phases reduce unnecessary landfill waste, markedly reducing carbon footprint and contributing wholeheartedly to the circular economy. Established in 1947 by Antonio Perissinotto, the marketleading company started with washing silica sands and later diversified into supplying pumps for the marble and granite cutting processes, chemical, wastewater treatment, steel industry, mining, filter press, oil & gas, through to ceramics and food and beverage sector, as a brand of Perissinotto SpA. The anti-abrasive and anti-acid slurry pumps are manufactured at the cutting-edge Milan warehouse and customers can choose from 25 basic pump models, across vertical, horizontal, submersible and multi-stage versions. With customers across 100 countries around the world, this Italian Powerhouse has enjoyed exponential growth over the decades and is happy to offer consultation around customised pumps for a variety of applications. PEMO PUMPS are centrifugal pump pioneers, with precision-designed advanced speed motors to feed filter presses and already well established across the UK and French aggregates and stone processing applications for slurry transfers and feeding filter presses. The focus at RWM 2023 was to create more brand awareness across the biogas and biomethane production chains, where robust pumps are routinely

XVI

used. The anti-abrasive centrifugal pumps have astounding anaerobic digestion processing capabilities, in recirculating OFMSW and provide a game-changer for the biogas industry. The semi-open impellers and anti-clogging volutes in the pumps are conducive to the meticulous transfer of highly viscous substrates. The HARDALLY PEMO superalloy is weathering-resistant and provides supercharged flow rates up to 1,500m3/h providing long-time efficiency, without the costly maintenance of single-screw pumps. CWF technology

CWF: Self-regulating, controlled water storm tank flushing

T

he ELIQUO HYDROK CWF technology offers an efficient and cost effective alternative to the normal storm tank cleaning procedures. The CWF will only operate when it needs to, immediately after a storm event and can be utilised at the end of any length tank. The CWF Storm Flush is a simple method for sediment removal. Storm water is held in reserve in the storage reservoir, filled as the tank fills during a storm – no separate water supply is required. At the end of a storm event and after the system has emptied, the retained flushing water

is released via the vacuum break within the flushing vessel. This creates a RFP (Roughing, Fine and Polishing) staged flushing regime which mixes and carries the sediment from the base of the tank to the receiving sump. A CWF system needs very little maintenance because of the few moving parts – the only moving part on the CWF is the non-return valve, which is an easily interchangeable off-the-shelf item, quick and easy to replace. View the video of it in action at: www.eliquohydrok.co.uk/en/productvideos.html For further information, contact: sales@eliquohydrok.co.uk or visit: www.eliquohydrok.co.uk

Panasonic leads the future of Solar thermal: Reducing Heat Pumps with Advanced energy demands to cut R290 A2W Aquarea M Series carbon & costs

C

apable of offsetting typically around 30% of the energy demands for water heating, solar thermal systems are ideal for organisations which rely on large amounts of domestic hot water (DHW).

P

anasonic Heating & Cooling Solutions is introducing its latest generation of Aquarea air-to-water heat pumps with the new M Series. Thanks to its new, modular concept, the M Series allows for more application choices offering different indoor units, available in All-in-One and Bi-Bloc, as well as full Control Box or Remote controlleronly essential functionality options. The advanced new system utilises the natural refrigerant R290 for a more sustainable solution and includes Panasonic’s first T-CAP R290 outdoor unit that features a new injection compressor. The M Series also has a hydraulic connection between indoor and outdoor units for simple and straightforward installation without the need for relevant refrigeration certification.

Flexible and suit to all lifestyles With its cutting-edge design, the M Series offers a range of flexible installation options. New to the M series, the outdoor unit can function as a standalone system with just an indoor remote control, making it an ideal choice for those seeking vital functionalities. Homeowners can opt for enhanced functionality by incorporating the more advanced Control Box or also selecting between a Bi-bloc or All-in-One system. This range of choices allows the Aquarea M Series to cater to a variety of functionality needs and property types, ensuring a tailored solution for every user.

Modular, high-performance flat plate collectors with integrated solar fluid (glycol) drain back are by far the most efficient way to heat water with solar energy. The solar fluid transfers solar energy as heat to the collector’s meander absorber to system water via an indirect cylinder. Drain back prevents overheating damage and increases a system’s lifespan. Together this offers a smaller footprint compared to equivalent solar photovoltaics (PV) for DHW. A typical 4 kW PV system requires approximately 16 panels covering 25m2 of roof to match just three flat plate collectors covering just 6.6m2 roof area. This makes solar thermal a prime choice when roof or façade space is limited.

To find out more, please visit: www.aircon.panasonic.eu

For existing buildings with gasfired water heating solar thermal is

employed as a system pre-heat, reducing demands for gas to actively cutting carbon emissions from the buildings. Commercial new build and refurbishment however are either mandated or opting to shift to direct electric which remains substantially more expensive to operate than gas – currently by a factor of 3.8. This has driven interest in hybrid approaches which harnesses solar thermal preheat. Necessary after heat is simply secured with a packaged Adveco FUSION E electric water heating system combining an electric boiler and cylinder. https://adveco.co https://adveco.co/products/waterheating/solar-thermal

Picking the right path to more sustainable hot water F

or commercial building projects the recent shift in net zero policy by the government is likely to have little impact on strategies that address energy demands, especially for the provision of hot water, a potentially key contributor to both operational costs and carbon emissions. Understanding and addressing hot water generation should therefore be an important part of an organisation’s net zero planning, but the optimal route will depend on the building, its infrastructure and usage. Adveco Live Metering of the hot water demands of a building is a quick, non-invasive, and extremely costeffective means of gauging needs. It also provides application design which enables owner/managers to develop realistic and sustainable development strategies which deliver active results today with low to no impact on ongoing operations. Unless a new build, which will be electrical-based, most refurbishments will look to either improve on existing gas systems, deploying modern ultra-low emission, hydrogen blend ready appliances, or aim to completely replace them with electrical alternatives, typically

air source heat pumps (ASHP) and/or direct-electric heating. The latter comes at a cost, in terms of capital and especially operational expense, but does reduce carbon emissions. FUSION from Adveco is the next generation of electric water heating for commercial projects. This compact, easy-to-install and robust, highefficiency range of pre-sized electric water heaters can incorporate a system-integrated monobloc FPi-32 ASHP. The FPI-32 and advanced controls deliver balanced system preheat so that electrical demand on the boiler is reduced by as much as 30%, delivering operational savings and reducing carbon emissions by up to 71%. Acting as pre-heat for both gas-fired or electrically heated water systems, or mid-heat for an electric system taking full advantage of an ASHP preheating the cold feed, solar thermal delivers undisputed carbon and cost savings. Modular, high-performance flat plate collectors are by far the most efficient way to heat water with solar energy,

offering a smaller footprint compared to equivalent solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. With integrated drain back to protect the solar fluid (glycol) which is used to transfer solar energy as heat to the system’s water via an indirect cylinder Adveco’s solar thermal is a low-maintenance, more cost-effective and more efficient approach to incorporating solar energy. A well-maintained solar thermal system should further reduce carbon and easily 30% of annual energy requirements for a less than 10 year return on investment. www.adveco.co

Innovative Horizontal and Vertical Monorail System Quirepace are the UK agents for the innovative products from Telelift Logistic GmbH. The longestablished Unicar product, which has been developed over the last 30+ years, has more recently been supplemented by the heavier duty Multicar system which, with its higher payload, is finding applications in industrial markets. The monorail track products from Telelift offer unique solutions that are not directly available from any other conveyor system. The ability to travel between floors or across working spaces at high level, means that the whole of the space within a building is available for the intralogistics system, maximising the flexibility of the space and minimising the interference with other processes. Unicar and Multicar are network monorail track systems with autonomous trolleys or cars which can move anywhere on the track network. The track can be installed horizontally, vertically and at any gradient. The original Unicar system’s traditional markets are Healthcare and Libraries with payloads up to 15kg. Multicar operates in a similar manner, with the same control software, but in a heavier duty configuration. Multicar trolleys can carry payloads up to 45kg, making the system much more suitable for industrial processes for e.g. parts delivery to production lines, collection of output from injection moulders and small-pressings, and as part of the production line itself. Multicar can be equipped with highly customised load handling devices for many different sizes, shapes and weights of payload. In automotive applications Multicar delivers bumper assemblies and door panels to the production line. The Unicar and Multicar tracks carry both data and

power on a busbar system. The trolleys are friction driven on horizontal track sections, making them extremely safe in operation, and convert to rack and pinion on climbs. The ability to transport payloads both horizontally and vertically without any requirement to transfer the payload to a separate lifting mechanism delivers an innovative and extremely flexible intralogistics solution. Both Unicar and Multicar can be routed at high level and within service areas where the track can be kept well away from production floors and other logistics systems, only dropping to load/unload areas in the immediate vicinity of the process to be served. Both Unicar and Multicar transactions can be initiated either through HMI (touchscreen terminals) or integrated with SCADA and WMS for automated control. Interface with other automated systems, such as automated load/unload stations is easily delivered through local PLC interfaces. The trolleys themselves also present both power and digital I/O for sophisticated load handling systems if required. The standard touchscreen terminal offers the operator complete information on the activity of the station; it shows approaching trolleys, trollies in the station and those departing. The operation has the facilities to record the

contents of the payload and also offers the ability for secure transport if required. A feature of both Unicar and Multicar is the ability to keep the payload perfectly horizontal during transportation, no matter whether the trolley is moving horizontally or vertically. This can be achieved either using a gravity pendulum system or a dynamic powered solution. Like any transport system, the track network is configured to deliver the traffic handling requirement of the customer. Many cars or trolleys can be active on the network simultaneously, with one and two way tracks supplemented by switches, the layouts are configured for maximum efficiency. Both Unicar and Multicar are completely modular systems that may be extended at any time simply by adding switches and additional tracks. Not only that, but the performance is scalable by adding additional cars and trolleys to the network, so whatever the anticipated growth might be, it can be accommodated by the Telelift installation. In many installations, custom load handling devices are required. Telelift have a wide range of standard components such as powered roll-on roll-off conveyors, but are also able to construct customised load handling devices for particular applications. Both Unicar and Multicar are well established solutions and are available in the UK through Quirepace. Contact us today and find out more about these innovative and flexible systems. Lithium batteries are dangerous goods! Fingers have often been pointed at lithium batteries after fires on board aeroplanes, ships, and on vehicles. However, whilst they can exacerbate the situation, the cause is highly unlikely to be lithium batteries that have been manufactured, packaged, labelled, stored, handled, and transported in compliance with the regulations. There is no doubt, though, that a fire could potentially be made worse, and less manageable, by the presence of lithium batteries. This is because of the high levels of energy that they contain and the difficulty in extinguishing a fire involving lithium – a particularly challenging task in the confines of a vehicle, a ship, or on board an aircraft. There is also the risk of ‘thermal runaway’ where the temperature

14

increases uncontrollably to a point where the cells in the battery catch fire, typically with dramatic effects. Lithium Batteries are classified under the multimodal regulations as dangerous goods. Consequently, if you ship lithium batteries or cells, even the small button types, you will need to have received training. Technology

Why use IO-Link? Universal | Smart | Easy A Tipping Point When I first encountered the topic of IO-Link 18 years ago, uniform communication at the sensor-actuator level was at a tipping point. It was basically clear to everyone that you can only win with a uniform standard. Every manufacturer already had corresponding proprietary communication interfaces for internal production processes, but access for the customer was difficult. So what was the reason that almost caused it to fail? Backward compatibility with the classic switching signal had to be strictly adhered to and shifting between switching mode and communicating mode was not solved. After hard discussions, the knot was broken, and the further definition was completed successfully. At this point, however, the most important characteristic of the IO-Link community has already become apparent: despite all differences and different approaches, the challenges were mastered, and the final product can be admired today. Wide compatibility In addition to compatibility with the switching 3-wire world, IO-Link is characterised by the fact that it does not require a system decision at any time, since the well-thought out, IO-Link master element enables mapping to all known bus systems as well as to IoT standards. This fact results in a win-win situation. The IO-Link device manufacturers only need to incorporate one communication standard in one device type and the user benefits from the wide range of products without restrictions due to bus systems or simple support of different bus systems. Standardised device description IO-Link has succeeded in creating a harmonised parameterization via the IODD (Input-Output-Device-Description) file. Uniform standard parameters are used under the same names across all manufacturers, so that the user can find his way around very quickly without having to read a lot of documentation. As a side effect some fundamental parameters popped up that are a basic prerequisite for today’s digital world, in particular standardised identification and diagnostic parameters as a basis for future use in digital twins.

16

But that’s not all, in IO-Link systems the toolfree exchange of IO-Link devices is already realised. So there is no need to search and install parameterization software. A simple mechanical exchange with automatic update to the current parameter set puts the system back to operation. In the case of sensors, many manufacturers have profiled the process data of measuring systems, and profiles for actuators, signal lamps and power supplies are under construction, so that the integration of IO-Link components will be further simplified for users. In addition, the IODD already makes it easier for users to set up IO-Link devices using their respective familiar system tools. Furthermore, the IO-Link community adds the convenience of centrally stored IODDs on the IODDfinder and many system tools already support an integrated import of missing IODDs. This eliminates the annoying search for the appropriate IODD on the respective manufacturer pages for more than 25,000 devices from more than 150 manufacturers today. Quality first The success of IO-Link is closely linked to the quality integrated from the get-go. By creating the test specification in parallel and consistently implementing it in test tools, the manufacturers of IO-Link components are enabled to check for conformity in a traceable manner. Based on these tests, the manufacturer creates a self-declaration in the form of a Manufacturer Declaration (MD). Through the mandatory publication, for example on the IODDfinder, we achieve maximum transparency for the user. The access for manufacturers as well as

consultants or independent conformity test houses into the IO-Link technology is conveniently arranged by the IO-Link community through accredited IO-Link competence centers and test laboratories in the USA, Europe and Asia. These facilities undergo regular audits by the IO-Link community to meet the high-quality standards. But IO-Link is more than just each individual component. The greatest benefit for the user is provided by the standardisation across the whole system chain. From the end device to the customer application and independent of the component manufacturers. To support the already established integration specifications for various fieldbus systems and IoT standards, the IO-Link master interface has been further harmonised with the help of the standardised master interface (SMI) and provides a solid basis for further integrations. Extending IO-Link Besides the original IO-Link definition, useful extensions relevant for automation have been created according to proven principles. Considering the already created tools and IODD definitions, the system has been enriched by IO-Link Wireless and IO-Link Safety. Both extensions carry on the basic idea of IO-Link, i.e. point-to-point communication, mapping in all bus systems or FSCPs (Functional Safety Communication Protocols) and this uniformly across manufacturers. An eye towards the future Because it is not enough to rest on our laurels, we have set up a Task Force Future within the IO-Link community. In this way, we want to specifically address future topics for IO-Link, evaluate them and develop concepts to guide the community integration into the IO-Link standard without overburdening users, but still carry the system into the digital future. In particular, the usage of the proven data model in other communication technologies is being considered. One example is the cooperation with the mioty alliance, which, by using the IODD methodology, does not have to develop integration in systems from scratch,

but applies existing tools to a new area of communication. The IO-Link user is always in the focus of the IO-Link community. This is reflected in the regular IO-Link forums, where IO-Link experts explain the IO-Link standard in all its facets and thus provide future users with a broad basis for making decisions about IO-Link. Transparency for all Another aspect of the success of IO-Link technology is the transparency of the IO-Link community. By publishing all specifications, anyone who is interested can read them and give us feedback about issues, misunderstandings and ideas for improvement. The relevant definition groups capture the suggestions, evaluate and incorporate them in order to improve the specifications and improve the system further. This openness repeatedly enforces the descent from the ‘ivory tower’ and opens up the technology to previously unrecognised application opportunities. This again creates an open working culture in the IO-Link community, ranging from IO-Link

experts and tool specialists to IoT experts and PLC programmers. It also reveals the demanding challenges we are dealing with, processing the IO-Link data not only for use in the control of a plant, but increasingly in maintenance, condition monitoring tasks as well as robot collaboration up to quality analyses. At this point, the IO-Link community is also very committed and easy to work with. Everyone in the community is allowed to contribute to the corresponding working groups and thus a broad expert knowledge is guaranteed. Conclusion Today, IO-Link is an accepted communication standard that provides data from the field to the controller (PLC) via Profinet, but also meets the IoT requirements and supports systems such as omlox and MTP (Module Type Package). Diagnostic data, backwards compatibility, simple device exchange, unique device identification and standardised

parameters have become so self-evident that it is no longer seen as a significant milestone in automation and IoT. Almost needless to mention anymore that the system also supports safe applications and handles wireless data transmission. Therefore, I can state for myself, that we come a long way from an almost failed standard 18 years ago, to an accepted communication standard for simple devices as it has emerged today. IO-Link standardises far more than just the communication and thus offers users many possibilities to implement their applications without having to dive deep into the system. And to top it off, the whole thing is worldwide! Contact T +49 721 986197-0 www.profibus.com

Rotech unveils entry-level coding system for bags & pouches Coding and marking specialists, Rotech Machines, expand their range of RF Lite feeders – costeffective systems for feeding and printing flat-form packaging – with a cleverly designed system specifically for small pouches and bags. The new pouch edition of the RF Lite was recently launched. Like the original and shuttle variants, the RF Lite pouch is an entry-level solution for companies looking to automate their coding process for the first time. It is also well-suited to larger manufacturers looking to install multiple systems for multiple products and short/trial production runs. The system utilises vacuum technology to ‘pluck’ bags from a stack, before running them past a maintenance-free thermal inkjet printer, and returning them to a stack, ready for operator removal. This automatic process eliminates the need for coding and labelling by hand – which is often labour heavy, time consuming and inaccurate. Instead, users of the RF Lite can be reassured that their packaging will be coded quickly and accurately. The system completes the RF Lite feeder range, proving that when it comes to cost-effective coding systems, three really is the magic number.

Printer for seamless large area printing on non-porous surfaces Also ideal for bag and pouch applications is the Integra PP Razr 34 – an impressive piezo printer that bridges the gap between the capabilities of a thermal inkjet printer and a large area printer. The Razr, which runs with the same inks used in a thermal inkjet printer, can guarantee excellent resolution printing (up to 600dpi) on both porous and non-porous substrates. It can seamlessly print on areas up to 34mm, making it ideal for applications where thermal transfer (TTO) would have traditionally been used. The cartridge-based technology also brings other benefits over other coding methods. It’s fast – it can run at high speeds up to 150m/ min at 300dpi and it starts up and shuts down instantaneously. The printer also has two separate nozzle channels that can be controlled individually, guaranteeing optimal printhead life and quality of print. The Razr is truly revolutionary in the world of coding and marking and is sure to be popular among manufacturers looking to improve their efficiency and reduce their waste. All without compromising on quality. www.rotechmachines.com
