Tomorrow’s Warehouse, held at the CBS Arena, Coventry on 8 June 2023, is the go-to conference/exhibition hybrid for logistics professionals to get to grips with modern warehousing.

Tomorrow's Warehouse is a one-day, freeto-attend conference tackling operational challenges in warehousing and logistics at a time of upheaval. It aims to ignite enthusiasm in today’s warehouse, allowing managers to embrace the positives of the great technological mega-trends that are sweeping over logistics.

Managers are doubtless feeling some pain in their operations, whether it is a lack of warehouse space, throughput bottlenecks, skill shortages, a need for solutions that will help meet sustainability goals, or many other challenges that are typical in the modern warehouse. The Tomorrow’s Warehouse conference can help with all of this, providing insights and market trends from a range of expert speakers, and giving visitors the opportunity to network with peers. The organisers take pride in providing answers and takeaways that have real practical benefits. There are a plethora of partners on site who can help boost your processes and projects with a dazzling array of clever and useful solutions. Tomorrow’s Warehouse returns next year to Coventry’s CBS Arena on 20 June 2024. Movetech UK vehicle access turntable keeps Marks & Spencer moving The 44 tonne capacity turntable, which is used to rotate decoupled articulated trucks up to 16.5 metres long at a speed of 0.5rpm, has been installed in the stores service yard, and has continued to prove to be a great asset to the business. Movetech UK (British Turntable Co Limited) have worked closely with the management teams at one of the UK’s leading retailers, Marks & Spencer, to design, manufacture and install a bespoke 12 metre diameter vehicle access turntable, sited at their prime city centre store in Chester, England.

The new turntable, is in fact a direct replacement, with the original turntable being installed in May 1990 by Movetech UK, then British Turntable Co Limited, with the new contract being agreed to replace the unit after the results of a recent inspection showed the turntable was no longer serviceable. The stores service yard, where the turntable is located and where deliveries take place, can only be accessed from a small busy one-way street, and strict local restrictions permit vehicles to enter and exit the street in a forward direction only. Therefore, the vehicle access turntable is a vital piece of equipment to the store, and is not only key to assisting with the store’s busy delivery schedule, but also helps adhere to the local council’s stringent traffic safety rules.

4

After 32 years of use the turntable had most definitely surpassed its design-life requirements, exceeding expectations for many years. The new more modern and efficient unit also allowed for a new and improved, better equipped, control system, and in addition to vastly improving logistical efficiency, the new turntable and control system is compliant with modern standards and regulations. Movetech UK will continue to work closely with Marks and Spencer and their partners – to service, repair and help with any queries or issues that may arise. How to use and maintain a safety shower correctly

Derby City Council’s AIpowered phone assistance

A safety shower, also known as an emergency shower, is an essential safety equipment in laboratories, industrial settings, and other environments where exposure to hazardous chemicals or materials is a possibility.

eyewash, and position your eyes in front of the flow of water.

Assess the Situation – If you come into contact with a hazardous substance or chemical, immediately assess the situation to determine if using the safety shower is necessary.

Seek Medical Assistance – After rinsing, seek medical attention even if you feel fine. Hazardous chemicals may have soaked into your skin, resulting in delayed reactions.

Derby City Council and Derby Homes have launched a new AIpowered phone assistance service, handling over 100,000 calls in its first two and a half months, achieving a 43% deflection rate, surpassing their initial target of 21% and already meeting a savings target of £200,000 within the council’s budget plan. The AI assistants, Darcie and Ali, handle up to 45% of daily inbound calls and are capable of answering over 1,000 questions daily and directing calls to over 40 different departments.

Activate the Shower: ● Locate the safety shower and either pull the handle or push the panic bar to activate the shower, or if fitted step onto the shower platform. ● Quickly remove contaminated clothing and accessories, including shoes. Do this as rapidly as possible, as it can help prevent the chemical or substance from soaking through the clothing. ● Position yourself directly under the flow of water from the safety shower. Ensure that the water is covering your entire body. Activate the Eye Wash (if available) – If the safety shower also has an integrated eyewash lift the lid to activate the

Rinse for at Least 15 Minutes – Flush the affected area with water for a minimum of 15 minutes.

Report the Incident – After using the safety shower, report the incident to your supervisor or safety officer. Shower Inspection and Maintenance – Weekly, inspect and operate the safety showers to ensure they are in a working condition and the water is flushed through the unit. Safety showers are designed for emergencies, so it's crucial to know their location and how to use them properly before an incident occurs. For more help or advice, please contact Aqua Safety Showers at: www.aqua-safety.com or telephone +44 (0)1942 318096.

Andy Brammall, Director at Derby City Council, highlighted the potential of AI to streamline customer service operations. The new AI system, based on advanced natural language processing, offers a user-friendly, 24/7 service that automates routine tasks and frees up staff time for complex queries.

The Council partnered with ICS.AI for this transformation, leveraging their SMART AI platform to enhance citizen engagement. Martin Neale, CEO at ICS. AI, lauded the initiative for addressing demand for council services, streamlining operations, improving call efficiency, and opening opportunities for potential operational cost reductions. Derby City Council’s commitment to AI technology aims to improve customer service and increase efficiency. Battery production: New mixing concept enables drastic reduction of process times in the production of lithium-ion electrode slurries The strong increase in sales of electric vehicles and an unparalleled surge in demand for lithium-ion batteries require a battery production that is designed for high capacities. A new technology for the production of lithium-ion electrode slurries enables dispersion of the powder particles within milliseconds. The Batt-TDS mixing concept for electrode slurry consists of a circulation process with an inline mixer, which inducts powders dust-free into a liquid stream and disperses them, as well as a 3D mixer, which achieves fast batch homogenisation in the vessel with low energy consumption and low shear rate. Dispersion in the inline mixer takes place under vacuum in this

process. The specific capacity can be increased 10,000-fold, and the shear stress can be concentrated to a few milliseconds of dispersion time in the active mixing area – instead of hours as for conventional mixers. From R&D to production scale The mixing platform YSTRAL BattTDS is available in four sizes – from a 12 litre unit for fast formulation and process screening (Batt-TDS navi), up to a production system for largescale production processes for cathode or anode slurries with a batch size of 10,000 litres (Batt-TDS Pro supra). Results from the trial scale can be easily scaled up to the production scale here. Print & Packaging Assembly

Essentra’s Kidlington site switches to 100% recyclable packaging Essentra Components, a leading provider of essential components and solutions, has completed the switch within its UK manufacturing and distribution centre in Kidlington to using paperbased packaging. The new packaging contains recycled content and is widely recyclable after use, supporting both its own and its customers’ ambitions for a more sustainable future. This initiative supports Essentra’s goals of ensuring 100% of its packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2030, and reaching 50% recycled content across its packaging materials by 2030. Working closely with packaging suppliers, the Kidlington distribution team focused on replacing transport packaging with more sustainable options: plastic used to fill voids, for example, has been replaced by 100% recycled cardboard, created

by converting waste cardboard on-site; plastic mailers have been replaced with paper versions containing 20% recycled paper; and the tape used to seal boxes is now made from widely recyclable paper, and the adhesive biodegradable. Jennifer Spence, Head of Sustainability Strategy at Essentra, says this initiative is a great example of the Kidlington distribution team turning targets into results, “Our aim has always been to reduce not only our own environmental footprint but also to support our customers in delivering their own sustainability targets,” she says. “This latest announcement shows how incremental shifts, and making even relatively small changes, can have a significant impact on improving our collective sustainability.” T 0345 528 0474 www.essentracomponents.com www.essentraplc.com

ATS: The heating, sensing and controlling suite of tomorrow Sean Wilkinson, Product Manager at industrial technology company Watlow, explores how adaptive thermal systems (ATS) are designed to provide companies with the tools to build the heating systems they need, without forcing compromise. Watlow, which manufactures industrial heating technology, has decades of experience with thermal systems to help engineers and designers to incorporate ATS technology into a variety of industrial processes and products. Watlow’s multi-loop control uses a multiplex wiring scheme that enables as many as ten times the number of zones per wire when combined with high TCR materials. Increasing zone density allows for unparalleled sensing and control without creating budgetary issues. Additionally, the company developed a standardised harness for the ATS system, which reduces the complexity of installations and the number of design passes needed before installation can begin. ATS’ true power comes from the fact that each system component is beneficial

on its own, but together, they can transform a heating process from end to end. Whether designing a system from scratch or redesigning one that has not quite lived up to expectations, ATS brings something new to the table. Many thermal system design projects reinvent the wheel at each stage of the process. ATS’s modular ‘off-the-shelf’ approach to many components not only lowers cost, but also reduces the number of design iterations needed before implementation to reduce lead time. However, it is essential to remember that ATS is still customised to the exact needs of each application. Due to that, it represents the best of both worlds. A system that can deliver the accurate temperature control needed for modern manufacturing while avoiding compromises related to cost, space, sensor density and heating control accuracy that other systems face. www.watlow.com

An evolution in inherent vibration suppressive materials Using nanomaterials, Graphene Composites (GC) has developed composite structures with superior performance. Combining graphene, one of the world's strongest materials, together with aerogel, one of the world's lightest materials, produces a composite structure which is extremely resilient – so resilient, in fact, that this combination forms the basis for GC’s patented ballistic protection products such as the GC Patrol Shield®. Based on the components used in the ballistic product range, GC has produced, and tested, composite materials which provide a higher degree of shock/impact resistance than other composites. Using the shield materials in laminate form, the resultant composite structures have been shown to exhibit the strength of an aluminium alloy whilst having the loss coefficient (the ability to absorb vibration) of an elastomer such as polyurethane

for example. Damping capacity along with strength and toughness combined with very low density are material properties which are of crucial interest across a wide range of industries. With the added ability to process these materials with standard machining equipment, the new GC range of composite structures under development may be the next solution to your current materials engineering problems. force or torque

reliable, accurate and repeatable test results. The range of pressure sensors and pressure mapping systems from industry leaders GP50 & XSensor back this reputation. Tony continued, “With regards to force measurement, our load cells are preferred by aerospace companies because they are highly accurate, and the results are very repeatable. Also, the devices themselves are extremely reliable and so they are looked on very favourably by both automotive and aerospace manufacturers in particular.” Interface Force is currently re-launching its XSensor High Speed Pressure Mapping System – the company offers a range of pressure mapping systems that can be applied to anything from impact testing to pressure testing tires, runways, beds, seats and much more. The XSensor system is the first system design to allow product designers and safety testing engineers to see, record and evaluate the distribution of force from highspeed impacts on safety equipment such as helmets and body armour. The system is particularly popular with automotive and aerospace seating manufacturers as evaluating the performance of helmets and other protective equipment designed to prevent injury requires detailed understanding of the pressure distribution on the body surface during dynamic impacts. Xsensor’s high speed HS Impact system combined with the thin conformable sensors allows customers to accurately measure

those pressures and evaluate how different design configurations affect pressure distribution on impact. In addition to this, the system is also used by manufacturers of office seating, companies that develop seating for the home, and bed manufacturers. In spite of its success in the industry, Interface Force is very much looking to future development. Tony informed us, “We are building new Applications which are based around renewable energy, and we are also developing Cloud-based, Wifi and Bluetooth data acquisitions by making our devices wireless. This would mean customers being able to collect data from anywhere in the world via an App.” This ever-growing comprehensive range of indicators, signal amplifiers, data loggers and wireless transmitters has been designed to complement the extensive range of load cells, torque transducers and pressure sensors, and the range has developed to ensure that customers have access to the most accurate, up-to-date, and costeffective devices available. Another new development is in the Airport environment, where Interface Force have begun to provide wireless monitoring of equipment on, for example, luggage carousels, and this product among many others have helped Interface Force to have a very successful past 12 months especially. Interface Force’s product reliability is second to none and all of its product lines have to match this standard before ever being recommended to customers. Interface is the world’s trusted leader in technology, design and manufacturing of force measurement solutions. Its clients include a ‘who’s who’ of so many industries, and the company’s engineers around the world are empowered to create high-level tools and solutions that deliver consistent, high-quality performance. HotHands: Bringing the heat to Glee 2023 Glee 2024 was another fantastic exhibition where we once again had the pleasure of exhibiting HotHands (air activated Hand, Foot & Body Warmers that provide quick, easy warmth for up to 10 hours). We were delighted to speak to so many visitors including; Buyers & Merchandisers, Business Owners & Directors and store staff. We have already seen some excellent results following the trade show. We are continuing to grow our presence within the Garden Centre market and without Glee (and the help of associated organisations) this wouldn’t be possible for us at Kobayashi Healthcare Europe Ltd. 2024 was our second consecutive year at Glee and our aim was to

take our learnings from 2023 and adapt our approach where necessary. However, our core approach remained the same; to be proactive in showcasing the features and benefits of our products. We have been fortunate to reap the rewards of this. The future is system reliability Delta-Xero is a UK owned manufacturing company based in Hampshire that produces a range of oil/fluid cleaning/filtering systems for use across multiple industries and applications. Delta-Xero at the CV Show focused on the cleaning/ filtering of diesel and other fuels for use in commercial vehicles, heavy plant and marine applications. Delta-Xero has the unique ability to remove particulate, contamination, moisture, and bacteria (diesel bug) from fuel oils down to a level of 0.1 micron. What is left is super clean fuel that when burned will not block the engine’s injectors, coke up valves, valve guides, pistons, rings, cylinders and reduces fuel bypass from the combustion chamber into the engine’s sump oil.

Delta-Xero also removes historic contamination from storage tanks negating the need for future tank flushing. The reduction in operators’ fleet O&M costs delivers rapid ROI and a reduction in emissions that delivers an ecological benefit for all. Delta-Xero will return diesel and other fuel oils from a condemned, contaminated state back to clean usable fuel. Delta-Xero also clean/filter hydraulic, transmission, gearbox and other oils, with the unique ability to make many of these last indefinitely. Phillips is a brand known in the automotive industry primarily as a manufacturer of electrical and pneumatic connectors. But in November it enters the European market with new products!

“For professionals, reliability is crucial, that's why we have created products that will significantly impact the fleet's dependability. At the modern technology trade fair in Lyon, we will showcase 5 products - I can already tell you about four of them today," says Julita Mazurkiewicz, CEO of Phillips Poland. Let's start with solar panels, which will allow the truck to be powered by additional energy - solar energy. If we're already talking about power, we can move on to another of our products – Sta-Charge PRO. This is the solution responsible for charging the batteries of the crane. In our product range, we also have TPMS, which is a tire pressure monitoring system.

We systematically assess our environmental impact according to ESG criteria. The solutions we introduce not only expand our product range but also allow for a reduction in the negative environmental impact for fleets that implement them. www.phillips-europe.com

Challenges faced by Fleet Managers in the transition to EV LCVs The main vehicle conversions challenges that LCV fleets experience when transitioning from ICE are: ● Charging and operation of vehicle-based power tools and ancillary electric equipment without drawing down on the vehicles HV drive batteries and reducing driving range. ● Addressing range anxiety at the end of the working day to ensure the vehicle has enough power to get the driver home or to a designated charging area. ● Supplying vehicle mounted auxiliary heaters for EV vehicles where ICE vehicles have traditionally taken a diesel fuel supply from the vehicle fuel tank. ● Re-engineering vehicle designs to meet operational requirements with the reduced available payload available on EV models. What are we doing at Modul-System to address these challenges and operational concerns?

Developing and fitting ultralightweight floors, linings, racking to reduce vehicle conversion weight and allow the vehicle to carry the tools and equipment required for the day job is probably the easiest problem for us to solve as ModulSystem has been developing and using these products in preparation for the EV journey for some years. As the fleet world rapidly moves towards full EV fleet operations it has become more important than ever that any vehicle conversion delivers in several areas. Interestingly, a continental shelf is a shallow and relatively flat stretch of seabed that extends from the shoreline to water depths of around 200 metres, before dropping off to deeper waters in what’s called the continental slope. The importance of the continental shelf to Norway is that it holds huge natural resources such as oil and gas, but also fishing. The best-known fishing areas are found on the Shelf and at the edges where it meets the deep sea. Under international law, coastal states are entitled to their continental shelf up to 200 nautical miles from their shores with some exceptions made to lengthen this, with NCS being one. Coding and marking specialists, Rotech Machines, expand their range of RF Lite feeders – cost-effective systems for feeding and printing flat-form packaging – with a cleverly designed system specifically for small pouches and bags.

be coded quickly and accurately.

The new pouch edition of the RF Lite was recently launched. Like the original and shuttle variants, the RF Lite pouch is an entry-level solution for companies looking to automate their coding process for the first time. It is also well-suited to larger manufacturers looking to install multiple systems for multiple products and short/ trial production runs.

Printer for seamless large area printing on non-porous surfaces Also ideal for bag and pouch applications is the Integra PP Razr 34 – an impressive piezo printer that bridges the gap between the capabilities of a thermal inkjet printer and a large area printer.

The system utilises vacuum technology to ‘pluck’ bags from a stack, before running them past a maintenance-free thermal inkjet printer, and returning them to a stack, ready for operator removal. This automatic process eliminates the need for coding and labelling by hand – which is often labour heavy, time consuming and inaccurate. Instead, users of the RF Lite can be reassured that their packaging will

The system completes the RF Lite feeder range, proving that when it comes to costeffective coding systems, three really is the magic number.

The Razr, which runs with the same inks used in a thermal inkjet printer, can guarantee excellent resolution printing (up to 600dpi) on both porous and nonporous substrates. It can seamlessly print on areas up to 34mm, making it ideal for applications where thermal transfer (TTO) would have traditionally been used. The cartridge-based technology also brings other benefits over other coding methods. It’s fast – it can run at high speeds up to 150m/min at 300dpi and it starts up and shuts down instantaneously. The printer also has two separate nozzle channels that can be controlled individually, guaranteeing optimal printhead life and quality of print. The Razr is truly revolutionary in the world of coding and marking and is sure to be popular among manufacturers looking to improve their efficiency and reduce their waste. All without compromising on quality. www.rotechmachines.com
