A diamond is the hardest natural substance found on earth.
The diamond is the only gemstone made of just one element—carbon.
Out of one thousand polished diamonds, only one will weigh more than a carat.
The largest diamond ever found is the Cullinan, weighing in at 3,106 carats.
The largest diamond ever found in the U.S. was discovered in 1924 in the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. Known as the Uncle Sam diamond, it weighs in at 40.23 carats.
Diamonds were first mined in India over 2800 years ago.
More than 250 tons of ore need to be blasted, crushed and processed to produce just one carat of rough diamond.
Diamonds are not unbreakable. A diamond's crystal structure has ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ directions. A blow of sufficient force in a very exact direction can crack, chip, split or even shatter a diamond.
Most diamonds found in nature were formed one billion to three billion years ago from extreme heat 90 to 120 miles below the earth’s surface. Volcanic activity brings diamond crystals much closer to the earth’s surface.
Bailey’s Fine Jewelry has been in the business since 1948. In that time, we have cultivated relationships with the best diamond sources in the world. What this means for you is no middleman mark up and access to the finest selection of diamonds at the best value – GUARANTEED. We make it a point to only purchase diamonds that are ethically sourced, part of our commitment to our customer and our own integrity as a company.
The internet is known for having diamonds that retailers around the world have rejected.
GIA, the foremost authority in the world on diamond education (and creator of the modern diamond report), teaches buyers to always see diamonds and compare before you buy. Never buy a diamond based solely on the GIA report or certificate.
At Bailey’s, we can size, set, inspect, clean, and service your ring on-site, preventing the hassle of shipping to online retailers for the same services.
If you are not happy with your diamond, the return process is inconvenient, long, and tedious via the Internet and expensive due to shipping charges.
There are plenty of horror stories of online customers not getting what was depicted. (Treated diamonds, fracture-filled diamonds, etc.)
At Bailey's you're working with a real live person who is able to help, educate and answer your questions.
The art of buying a diamond is more than just the facts and stats. It is not an exact formula. The true brilliance of a diamond is a combination of many factors, that need to be seen in person. Bailey's has an expansive diamond inventory allowing you to do just that.
At Bailey’s, we give you the time and attention necessary to make one of the most significant purchases of your life.
The heart and soul of Bailey’s is our workshop. Our master craftsmen will work with you to design the piece of your dreams. Designing or redesigning a piece of jewelry is fun, interactive and most of all, affordable. At Bailey’s, we want to cater to our customers. If you want to create a custom designed look for your engagement ring or wedding band, Bailey’s can take you through every step of the process: design, 3D model, and final product, all in store. Whether it is a simple band with an engraving, or a completely custom mounting with carefully selected diamonds, Bailey’s does it all, for you right in our store.
A diamond certificate, or more accurately called a diamond grading report, is a document created by a team of gemologists that reports the quality evaluation of a diamond.
Diamond grading is a subjective blend of science and opinion. For example, two professionally trained graders can assign the same diamond different color and clarity grades. It is also important to note that all “certificates” are not equal. There are more than a dozen grading labs around the world and all labs have different grading standards. However, while these labs issue these reports, they do not cut or polish the diamonds. Mother Nature determines the color and clarity. Cut is the only quality factor that humans have control over.
At Bailey’s we often buy diamonds without even looking at the report attached because we are GIA-educated gemologists. This means that we know how to grade a diamond and know the correct price regardless of the report. We want you to know that we price our diamonds in line with GIA grade pricing. You can be confident that a diamond bought at Bailey’s has the fairest price and is of the highest quality.
There is an unethical trend in the jewelry industry of stores trying to represent the Rapaport Diamond Report as a wholesale price list. This is in an effort to mislead the customer into thinking that you are buying wholesale or falsely convincing you that you are getting a great "deal". You should never buy from a store that uses these misleading tactics or who makes an aggressive attempt to get a deposit.
CutWhile some think that cut refers to the shape of the diamond, it actually refers to the proportions and symmetry of the diamond. It is in the art of cutting and polishing that a diamond truly achieves its greatness. Only those that possess great skill can produce the fine diamonds that Bailey’s accepts.
A polished diamond’s beauty lies in its complex relationship with light: how light strikes the surface, how much light enters the diamond, and how and in what form light returns to the eye. The result is a magnificent display of three attributes:
Brightness is the combination of all white light reflecting from the surface and interior of a diamond.
Fire describes the flares of color emitted from a diamond.
Scintillation describes the flashes of light you see when the diamond, the light, or the observer moves.
A polished diamond’s proportions affect its light performance which in turn affects its beauty and overall appeal. Diamonds with fine proportions, symmetry, and polish optimize their interaction with light and have increased brightness, fire, and scintillation.

Although many think of gem-quality diamonds as colorless, truly colorless diamonds are actually very rare. Most diamonds used in jewelry are nearly colorless with tints of yellow or brown.
Color grades are determined by comparing each diamond to a master set. A diamond’s color is most accurately determined when it is not mounted in a setting. One reason for this is that the setting can introduce tints of its own color into the diamond. Also, the grader should view the diamond from the pavilion (the bottom) because the true color of a diamond can be “masked” by a high quality cut. Diamonds with superior cut and polish can look up to two color grades better when viewed face up. For these reasons, gemological laboratories such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the American Gem Society (AGS) will only grade diamonds un-mounted.
Diamonds also come in colors such as blue, pink, purple, red, green, orange, brown, and yellow and are commonly referred to as fancy colored diamonds. These diamonds, if natural in color, are incredibly rare and can command very high prices.
“Bailey's is hands down best in class when it comes to service, quality, and price.”

Clarity is an indication of a diamond’s rarity. All diamonds, except the most rare, have internal and/or external characteristics called inclusions. Inclusions are the result of the tremendous pressure and heat present when a diamond is formed. These characteristics help gemologists distinguish natural diamonds from synthetics and simulants. They also help identify individual diamonds and thus serve as a diamond’s “birthmark”.
The presence of some inclusions does not diminish the diamond’s beauty or endanger its durability. The outer beauty of a diamond comes from the cut and color. In fact, most inclusions require powerful magnification before they are visible. Less than one percent of all diamonds are free from inclusions and can be deemed flawless (FL) or internally flawless (IF).

Diamonds are measured in carats. A carat consists of 100 points and is measured in much the same way as pennies in a dollar. For example, .50 points is equal to half of a carat.
A diamond’s carat weight is its weight, not its size. When comparing two diamonds of equal carat weight, one might actually look larger than the other. This is due to the cut and proportions of the diamond. A well-cut one carat round brilliant diamond should measure approximately 6.5 millimeters in diameter. A diamond that is cut too shallow will have a broader diameter and appear larger. A diamond cut too deeply will appear smaller. Poorly cut diamonds sacrifice beauty and brilliance. Bailey’s features the best diamonds with precise cuts that make our diamonds of the highest quality.
DON’T wear your diamond when you’re playing sports, doing rough work or the dishes. Even though a diamond is durable, it can be chipped by a hard blow or dulled by harsh chemicals.
DON’T jumble your diamond pieces in a drawer or jewelry case because diamonds can scratch each other and other jewelry.
Diamonds do need care to keep them at their brilliant best. A clean diamond not only reflects light better, it actually looks bigger than one that’s been “dulled” by skin oils, soap, cosmetics and cooking grease. Diamonds have an affinity for grease and should be cleaned once every month to keep glowing their brightest.
Clean in a Detergent Bath - Prepare a small bowl of warm suds with any mild liquid detergent. Brush pieces gently with a toothbrush while they are in the suds. Transfer to a wire strainer and rinse under warm running water. Pat dry with a soft, lint-less cloth.
Clean With a Cold Water SoakMake a half-and-half solution of cold water and household ammonia in a cup. Soak the diamond 30 minutes. Lift out and tap gently around the back and front of the mounting with a small brush. Swish in the solution once more, and drain on paper. No rinse is needed.
Inspections - Bring your diamonds in to Bailey’s Fine Jewelry for a “check-up” quarterly. We will check your ring for loose prongs and signs of wear, and give it a professional “clean-up.” All Bailey's inspection are at no charge.
