Snow-shoe hike up the Feldpannalm

After a brief ascent in the chairlift we make our way through the crackling snow down to the Klamerhütte chalet. Fill your lungs with the fresh mountain air to blow away those city cobwebs. Prepare to be mesmerised by the magical silence of the snow-covered woods and the beauty of this pristine landscape, touched only by the traces of your snow shoes. The Feldpannalm beckons after a two-hour

walk, with the delicious fragrance of game stew and “Zirbennockerl” dumplings tickling your nose. Have a well-deserved rest outside the chalet and drink in the amazing view before tucking into a plateful or two.

See the sun rise slowly over the Nockberge when you reach the valley station of the Kaiserburgbahn. It is only 6:30am and just a handful of early risers are waiting to get up that summit. Revel in the sensation of being among the first on the slopes – together with none other than Franz Klammer. During your ride in the cable car, the rising sun dips the surrounding mountain peaks in a glorious shade of red. Strap on those skis and off you go – down the un-

touched World Cup downhill track all the way to the valley. After two hours of amazing skiing, take yourself and your glowing cheeks to the Klammerstub’n and feel your mouth water over the promising fragrance of coffee, fried eggs and fresh rolls.

Guided ski tour for beginners

Look up at those deep blue skies – perfect­ weather for a ski tour. Today, you are planning to tackle the Brunnach route. You shoulder your skis and take the bus to the valley station of the Brunnach National Park cable car line. You strap on your skins and off you go – a few metres along the piste and then following the marked route in the direction of the Schafalpe. For over an hour, you can bask in the sense of being surrounded by nothing but untouched nature. “The route up to the mountain station is breath-taking”, says your tour guide and

you have to agree with him. Such moments of intoxicating beauty are rare in life. And when you wedel down the freshly prepared piste back down to the valley a short while later, you know: this was only your first time, not your last.

Route description Tour starts at the end of St. Oswald (bridge of Angerbichlweg). Ascent to Lärchenhütte on the forestry road, then up to Hundsfeldhütte at 1900m through Hundsfeldgraben.­ Ascent to Hundsfeldscharte at 2130m via the north ridge to the summit.

The Falkert peak (2308m) offers spectacular views. To get back down to the starting point, enjoy a downhill ride across the clear slopes of the Tanzboden.

Glide through the snow Some say that cross-country skiing is a bit like outdoor meditation – and in Bad Kleinkirchheim, this feeling is there for you to enjoy from November onwards.

The 8km cross-country trail that leads through glittering snow fields and dense woodlands to some of the region’s most beautiful spots is covered by our snowmaking system on a regular basis, starting in December.

Dancing with snow flakes There is no more romantic way of exploring the snow-covered fields and forests around Bad Kleinkirchheim than a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.

And while the scenery glides past, there is plenty of time to look out for the most beautiful routes for that winter hike. If you’d rather reach for your ice skates than your ski boots, you shouldn’t miss skating in nearby Feld am See, in a gloriously untouched natural setting.
