The 2018 -19 school year has been both spectacular and unique in many ways.

Our recent weather woes, which make this seem like the winter that will never end, can’t take away from the huge success stories and exciting new opportunities that are either being started or under review to provide the best education possible for the students of the Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District and the Badger High School District.

Our elementary school district was recently honored for its academic achievement by the State of Wisconsin as a Five Star School District – the State of Wisconsin’s highest rating. We are very proud of the work of our professionals, support staff, students and families as we continue to work together to provide our students the tools they will need to be successful in the future. This academic skill will help our graduates weather any storm that they encounter on their path to success.

Badger High School's junior class recently participated in MyLIFE, a simulation of their financial future. Students are given an income a financial and personal profile after completing an online survey about their postsecondary aspirations including college, career, family and even number of pets they'd like to have. During the MyLIFE event, they must pay all their bills, taxes, childcare, housing, insurance, transportation, etc. If they are short of income, they must join the National Guard or get a second job.

Thank you to the more than 70 community volunteers who helped Community State Bank put on MyLIFE this year.

Speaking of the weather, the 2018-2019 school year has truly been unique and a challenge to provide a quality, consistent educational program. At the time of this writing we have had six weather related closures of our schools. This is an unprecedented number of closures in my career (48 years)!! To ensure that important curriculum is not missed, the Lake Geneva Schools have modified this year’s calendar in the following manner: Friday, February 22nd was a full student day instead of a teacher inservice day; Monday, April 22nd will now be a full day of school for students instead of a day off; and the late start/early release days for March 12th, April 11th and May 9th now will be full school days. This will keep us in compliance with state requirements for time in the classroom and will not extend the school year beyond its completion on June 7th. Even if more weather related issues arise, we will not extend the school year beyond June 7th for our students as there are other ways to assure that we honor and meet state requirements.

One of the greatest honors a school district can achieve is being designated as a National Blue Ribbon School! With that I am proud to report that Star Center Elementary School has achieved that status. Great job Star Center staff, students and families!! Star Center is one of six Wisconsin elementary schools to receive this distinction and one of eight schools in the entire state to be recognized for this prestigious award.

Star Center now enters a national competition with the chance for further accolades and a trip to Washington, D.C. Good luck and congratulations.

Couple these successes with the excitement generated by the opening of two new Charter Schools (New Visons, high school and Maple Park, elementary) and the examination of adding a 3 year old preschool program and wrap around childcare and it is hard, as superintendent, not to be extremely proud and excited about our schools. For sure, these great events top our newsworthy weather as our schools’ top stories! Have a great remainder of the 2018-2019 school year and thank you for supporting our schools.

Character Day 2019 at Central-Denison Elementary School Central-Denison Elementary School celebrated Character Day 2019 with a focus on kindness. Students practiced in problem-solving activities and delivered postcards with kind words. A project they completed was the construction of a Chain of Kindness and a banner of helping hands. Throughout the activities, the children learned the meaning of a true friend.

Star Center Elementary School Receives National Blue Ribbon Award Nomination

We are proud to announce that Star Center Elementary School is among just six Wisconsin public schools that are nominees for the 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, which recognizes the highest performing schools in the state.

“Our nominated schools are making strides on closing achievement gaps and boosting student academic achievement,” said State Superintendent Carolyn Stanford

Taylor. “I wish these schools and their communities well in the next steps of this rigorous, national recognition program.”

Schools nominated to the program must complete the Blue Ribbon Schools application and undergo the national review process.

Typically announced in September, awards are presented to up to eight Wisconsin public schools that fall into one or both of 1) Exemplary High Performing Schools, that

By Dr. Jan Eckola Director of Curriculum The Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District and the Lake Geneva-Genoa City UHS District are going to offer new student learning opportunities. Starting in the fall, both the elementary district and high school district will introduce charter school programs designed to support students that need an alternative to a traditional classroom schedule.

Maple Park Charter School will serve students in prekindergarten to eighth grade. New Visions Charter School will be available for students in 9th grade through high school. These two Charter Schools are non-traditional Schools started by the local school boards. Lake Geneva Schools have long had a mission to provide opportunities to students. Both boards approved the schools during their December meetings. The boards believe strongly in listening to the voice of the community. The District’s Strategic Planning Process included strategies to meet the needs of all learners in the greater community. Charter Schools fit nicely with this strategy.

The Charter Schools’ focus is on meeting student individual needs with licensed teacher support and resources. Maple Park Charter school for elementary students (preK-8) will operate similar to a home-based program, with parents receiving support from teachers in the planning process. Students will have the opportunity to have an enrichment day one day a week to expand their learning in physical education, art, music, STEAM, and in cultural experiences. At the high school level the blend comes from online programs and face-to face learning at Badger High School. Both of these programs are structured to meet individual student needs.

Education is changing dramatically across the United Sates to meet student needs. In today’s fast paced world, options have become important for families. We hope to offer programs that meet the growing needs of our community.

Each participant receives a Wellness Notebook The Parent Wellness Compass points toward the four dimensions of our being: heart, soul, strength and mind. These dimensions are interconnected and our lives are intricately woven together. Much like an ecosystem, each area is affected by the other areas of the compass; therefore, whatever impacts one dimension of our lives (positively or negatively) impacts the other dimensions. A change in one area of our lives impacts the other areas.

The Parent Wellness Circle Program is a six-week parent coaching program that helps parents determine and design the changes they are ready to make to enhance their own wellness, and the wellness of their families. When parents gather with their trained facilitator to work this program, we call it a Parent Wellness Circle.

In a Parent Wellness Circle, participants gather with a trained facilitator to set goals, share challenges, and support each other as they work on NEXT Steps. The Parent Wellness Compass Inventory, a signature part of this coaching program, is completed in the first session and serves as a guide to help parents set their NEXT Steps over the six weeko of the program. It has been said that, “It takes a village to raise a child.” We believe that it also takes a village to support a parent.

A Teen Wellness Circle is a committed small group of teens and their adult facilitator who meet for six sessions. Lake Geneva Middle School Gym $40 Multi-games will focus on a variety of different activities such as kickball, capture the cone, four country capture the flag, alternative dodgeball games, soccer and much more. This class will not only help students become more active, but it will also build teamwork, cooperation, and help socialize with different students.

Students will be able to be active twice a week while enjoying a variety of different activities.

Lake Geneva Middle Fitness Center $40 This class is designed to work with 7th and 8th graders on flexibility, core strength, speed training, and fundamentals. Participants will be introduced to the Circuit Trainers and Synergy 360 multifunction machine to work upper body muscles, lower body muscles, and core muscles.

All strength components will be tied to a variety of speed and agility exercises to help students be bigger, faster and stronger.

BHS Fitness Facility Upcoming Lake Geneva Autism Spectrum Disorder Parent Support Groups Lake Geneva School District and the Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin are partnering together to offer a parent support group for parents/guardians of children ages 3-21 who have either been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or receive special education services at school under an Educational Autism label. This support group offers the opportunity to meet other parents, provide education on topics related to autism, and provide resources regarding other services and opportunities available to families with students either diagnosed medically with autism or who are identified at school under the educational autism category. Angie Schubert, an occupational therapist in the Lake Geneva School District, will be facilitating the support group along with the support of a representative from the Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin, Julie Quigley. This support group is offered free of charge for parents and guardians.

The group will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Community Garden 2019 $15 for a 10 x 20 plot

Lake Geneva Schools Community Garden Guidelines & Waiver

Ensuring enjoyable gardening experiences for all of the garden community is the primary goal of these rules and responsibilities. For this reason, observe the rules of the garden, and be a good neighbor.

All gardeners must sign and return this form to Badger Community Education prior to planting.

Annual Garden Plots Individual plots will be approximately 10’ x 20’. All plots will be marked off by garden coordinators. There are 45 garden plots available on a first come, first served basis.

Rental fees: 10’ x 20’ is $15.00, each + (Clean-up Deposit: $25.00) Enclose a separate check dated November 2, 2019 for $25.00. This check will only be cashed if you fail to clean your plot completely before the November 2nd deadline.

· Initial rough tilling will be done at the start of the growing season as weather permits. · Compost bins will be available for disposal of plant waste. · Water will be available on site.

1. The garden should be a safe place for the community, children, and other gardeners. Do not bring anything that will compromise the safety of the garden.

7. Only established paths going to and from your plots may be used. Do not park on grass. You can drop off at your site, but please move/park your vehicle in the lot.

2. The garden’s steering committee has the duty of enforcing rules and making decisions for the garden between annual meetings of all gardeners. They have authority to resolve conflicts, including refusing a plot to a gardener or dismissing a current gardener.

3. Weather permitting, garden plots will open Saturday, May 4, 2019. Produce must be harvested and plots cleaned by Saturday morning November 2, 2019 (closing date). This includes the removal of every-

thing you brought into the garden. (fence, stakes, etc. Plants under 1’ can be left.)

4. No chemical weed killer (herbicides) may be used. Pesticides are discouraged, however if pesticides are used all label directions must be strictly followed. Keep all pest-control products and containers away from children. Walworth County Extension at 262-741-4951 can give safe pest-control advice.

5. Plants must be grown within the plot boundaries. No perennial plants allowed. Tall crops (sunflowers, corn, and trellised plants) may be grown, but should not shade another garden plot.

6. Water will be available on site. Hooking up your garden hose to the coupler at the garden is allowed. If doing this please be considerate of other gardeners. Hoses are only allowed through designated walking areas and cannot be dragged through plots. Gardeners must be present when their hose is hooked up to the water source.

8. Children should be restricted to your plot and the common areas of the garden. Teach your children to respect others’ plots and not to waste water.

9. Plastic mulch and plastic “snow” fences are not allowed. Biodegradable mulch such as compost, leaves, and straw are encouraged. No wood chips are allowed as mulch because of the slow decomposition rate.

10. In accordance with school district rules, no pets, alcoholic beverages, or smoking are allowed in the gardens.

11. Gardens should look tidy all growing season. Gardeners are responsible for controlling the weeds throughout the growing season and preventing them from spreading to other gardens. If your plot is overgrown with weeds, you will receive a warning. After two weeks of no action, your plot may be mowed or reassigned by garden coordinators.

12. Compost stations will be available for garden plant waste. All weeds and diseased plants should be disposed of in a separate, designated area. Please no trash or food waste in the piles as they may attract animals.

No security is provided for garden plots. Vandalism should be reported directly to the police department. Neither Lake Geneva Schools nor the University of Wisconsin-Extension Office is liable in case of accidental injury, theft, or vandalism. District assumes no liability for damages caused by wild animals, drought or flooding.

WARNING LETTER: If the garden coordinators notice that the above rules and guidelines have not been followed, then you will receive a warning letter explaining what problems need to be addressed. If the situation has not been corrected within two weeks, you will lose the plot and it will be assigned to a different gardener.

Stealing and vandalism will not be tolerated. Call the Lake Geneva Police Department at 262- 248-4455 to report theft or vandalism problems. In case of emergency dial 911.

Each team is given a card and must devise a way to make 24 out of those numbers. The games establishes a fun culture of math success in schools by developing the way students feel about the subject.

Learning from Medical Professionals about Blood Pressure and Stroke at LGMS Stroke and blood pressure were the topics discussed

by Aurora Community Outreach educators when they visited Lake Geneva Middle School 7th grade science students. A Registered Nurse and a Respiratory Therapist taught the students about the acroyny B.E. F.A.S.T for warning signs of stroke. Students practiced using blood pressure monitors, discussed lifestyle choices for a healthy future and compared the numerous medical career opportunities.

District Spelling Bee winners and Crete Slattery (8th grader) and Sophia Liontas (5th grader from Star Center) fared very well at the CESA 2 Regional competition.

Slattery went through 6 rounds, spelling the word “obsequious” to clinch a spot as one of the three finalists to move on to the Badger State Spelling Bee in Madison.

Of the 38 participants, Liontas 28th going out on the word contraband.

In consideration for receiving permission to participate in Badger Community Education, I hereby release, waive, discharge and covenant not to sue the Lake Geneva-Genoa City Union High School District, its officers, agents, servants, or employees (hereinafter referred to as releasees) from any and all liability, claims, demands, actions and causes of action whatsoever arising out of or related to any loss, damage, or injury, including death, that may be sustained by me, or any of the property belonging to me, whether caused by the negligence of the releasees, or otherwise, while participating in such activity, or while in, on or upon the premises where the activity is being conducted.

I am fully aware of the risks involved and hazards connected with using the fitness center, including but not limited to muscle injury, heat exhaustion, cardiovascular stress, and all other conditions related to use of cardiovascular and weight training equipment and I hereby elect to voluntarily participate in said activity with full knowledge that said activity may be hazardous to me and my property. I voluntarily assume full responsibility for any risks of loss, property damage or personal injury, including death, that may be sustained by me, or any loss or damage to property owned by me, as a result of being engaged in such an activity, whether caused by the negligence of releasees or otherwise.

3. I further hereby agree to indemnify and hold harmless the releasees from any loss, liability, damage or costs, including court costs and attorney fees, that they may incur due to my participation in said activity, whether caused by negligence of releasees or otherwise.

4. It is my express intent that this Waiver of Liability and Hold Harmless Agreement shall bind the members of my family and spouse, if I am alive, and my heirs, assigns and personal representative, if I am deceased, and shall be deemed as a release, waiver, discharge and covenant not to sue the above-named releasees.

I hereby further agree that this Waiver of Liability and Hold Harmless Agreement shall be construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Wisconsin.

5.
