SPRING 2020 District Update &
Community Education Catalog
From the Superintendent Current School Year Progress and Preparation for 2020-2021 By Dr. James Gottinger, Superintendent of Schools
The 2019-2020 school year reached its half way point on January 17, 2020. We are currently deep into the second semester of the current school year. Students and staff are highly engaged academically as well as involved in many extra-curricular programs. With that, we are also gearing up for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year. Our students have done well academically as well as in extra-curriculars during the first semester of the current school year. The Badger tennis team was recently recognized by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (W.I.A.A) with the State Tournament Sportsmanship Trophy! A huge honor indeed. Concerts for band, orchestra and choir have are taking place in the near future for all of our schools. And sooner than later our schools will be taking state assessments to demonstrate their academic growth. We have done very well on these tests in the past and any help from parents to encourage your sons and daughters to take this test seriously would be appreciated. The test does help us to shape curriculum needs in the future, so a true measure of what students know or don’t know is extremely helpful. In addition, at the high school level, it is a free ACT test for our juniors. We are also planning for next year. Your high school student has already signed up for courses for the 2020-2021 school year.
If you haven’t done so already, please talk to them about the choices they have made and contact the guidance office at Badger if there are issues with those selections. Course choices will be made soon at the middle school. Once again, keep the lines of communication open with this important process as the school year progresses. As a school district we continue to address our Strategic Plan goals. We especially have emphasized what we call the whole child. In addition to academic growth we have provided and expanded mental health resources and have worked very hard to provide education on the dangers of vaping. This relatively new issue for schools has received attention from our school from fourth grade through high school. We will continue our efforts to educate students on this health issue and once again, appreciate your efforts and support to do the same at home. In conclusion, as we all continue our efforts to provide the best education possible that addresses both the academic and social/ emotional needs of our students during the current school year, we are also preparing for the 2020-2021 school year through the high school and middle school scheduling and assessment process. I sincerely hope the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year is successful for all and that the 2020-2021 school year is even better!
Straus Named Principal at Badger “Better never stops,” is the long-term vision of Jenny Straus, who was named Principal of Badger High School by the Lake Geneva-Genoa City UHS Board of Education on Monday, February 10, 2020, beginning in the 2020-2021 school year. Straus is serving as Interim Principal since the resignation of Russ Tronsen last summer. For 10 years before that, she served as an Associate Principal under both Tronsen and Bob Kopydlowski. Straus said she will continue to build on what came before her. “I will strive to ensure Badger never stops creating classrooms where all students are engaged in innovative curriculum, inspired to be life-long learners, and have a sense that this is where they belong.” Superintendent Jim Gottinger stated, “After our committee interviewed several other candidates, Ms. Straus stood out as the ideal candidate to lead Badger forward.” Straus is a graduate of UW LaCrosse and earned her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Wisconsin. Her educational philosophy is “Excellence, Equity, and Kindness. Build relationships that support high-quality education for every student.” This practice has included 13 years of teaching and five years as associate principal at Delavan Darien High School. Since coming to Badger, she highlights accomplishments as opportunities she has helped others create including the Community Garden, two student organizations Up & Out and GSA and Stress Management class. In addition, she has worked diligently in relationship building with families to support student learning. “The Badger community has a well-earned sense of pride in the opportunities offered to students and the
high level of accomplishment our students continue to reach,” Straus said. “ I look forward to continuing our mission of ensuring that WE collaborate to ensure that every student achieves academic and personal success,” she concluded. “Ms. Straus has the knowledge, skills and drive to continue to move Badger and all of its students forward. As Interim Principal this year, she has already had much success working with students, teachers, staff, parents and community partners.” Gottinger stated. This year, Straus aims to continue to grow Badger’s educational community’s capacity to ensure that all students succeed at Badger. She is beginning each day with morning announcements highlighting accomplishments from the night before and reminds all at Badger that, “Better never stops,” she said.
ON THE COVER
Central-Denison Elementary School students are participating in Lego STEM activities through the Gifted and Talented Education Program. Students build projects using directions provided with the LEGO kits and use a computer program to make them move. For example, in this picture Parker and Gustavo built an airplane with a tilt sensor. The propeller spins at different speeds when they tilt the plane in different directions. They programmed the computer to make an engine sound and a sputtering sound when the plane is tilted. Each of the projects has moving parts and computer programming.

It Is Enrollment Time!
By Dr. Jan Eckola, Director of Curriculum
It is enrollment time for Lake Geneva Schools’ four-yearold kindergarten and three-year-old preschool, Buzzing Bees! For many children, preschool is their first experience in a structured setting with teachers and groups of children. It’s an opportunity to learn to share, follow instructions, and begin the foundation for learning that will occur in elementary school. Fortunately, in Lake Geneva when selecting a preschool, parents aren’t forced to choose between protecting a child’s play time and making sure they are ready for kindergarten. Our high-quality early childhood education program will offer children both at the three- and four-year-old developmental levels. We believe strongly in offering our community of learners many opportunities at all age levels. But how does a high-quality preschool benefit children’s learning and development? And what features should parents look for in a preschool program? One answer is that the staff at high-quality preschools and child care programs understand the particular ways that young children develop and learn. And they organize space, time and activities to be in sync with children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities. In Lake Geneva Schools we have strong teachers who have attended universities to learn about children’s developmental needs and ALL CLASSES REQUIRE PRE-REGISTRATION Registration form on page 17
have continued their education with Masters Degrees, and ongoing professional development in best practices. In order to learn, a young child needs to feel cared for and secure with the teacher and environment. A three-year-old child is able to spend time away from parents and build trusting relationships with adults outside the family. High-quality preschool programs nurture warm relationships among children, teachers and parents. Lake Geneva teachers build close personal connections with each child in their care. Young children in our programs learn social skills and emotional self-control in real time. Three- and four-year-olds learn through their experiences and our great teachers make time for the teachable moments when they can help children learn to manage frustrations or anger. Preschooler's language skills are nurtured in a language-rich environment. Between the ages of three and five, a child’s vocabulary grows from 900 to 2,500 words, and their sentences become longer and more complex! In a conversational manner our teachers help children stretch their language skills by asking thought-provoking questions and introducing new vocabulary during science, art, snack time, and other activities. Children have many opportunities to sing, talk about favorite books, and act out stories. A young child’s cognitive skills are strengthened by engaging in a wide range of hands-on activities that challenge them to observe closely, ask questions, test their ideas or solve a problem. We invite you to come and see our Buzzing Bees or four-year-old-kindergarten programs. Tours are available at each of our elementary buildings by contacting the school office. We would love to have your family join our community of learners experiencing a myriad of opportunities at every grade level. BADGER COMMUNITY EDUCATION -- 5

The Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District is committed to supporting quality education programs. A community need has arisen for a blended learning approach that will challenge students to reach their full potential. As a result, the Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District has joined with the Maple Park Charter School Governance Board to create a new and unique learning environment for students. The Maple Park Charter School offers a blended learning approach. Each student’s personalized learning plan is developed by the student’s parents, the teacher on record, along with student input. Maple Park Charter School provides individual curriculum based on statemandated standards. The program includes a menu of learning options that best fit the needs of the students (parent teaching resources, hands-on materials, and virtual options). The parent selected curriculum will be chosen from a list of approved curriculums that provide for academic growth consistent with Wisconsin State Academic Standards. Our virtual curriculum component is paired with a licensed teacher that delivers the virtual instruction and a local educational guide that provides face-to-face support. Maple Park Charter School provides individual support to all children and parents. This includes weekly checkins with a licensed teacher. Our licensed teachers focus on: improving learning by planned instruction, diagnosing learning needs, prescribing content delivery through class activities, assessing learning, reporting out-
comes to administration, parents and students, and evaluating the effects of instruction. In order to ensure greater academic success and make physical connections with the Maple Park Charter School, parents are required to attend curriculum planning sessions with one of our licensed teachers. In order to ensure greater academic success and make physical connections with the Maple Park Charter School, parents are required to attend curriculum planning sessions with one of our licensed teachers. At Maple Park Charter School, our teachers are dedicated to ensuring success. We believe a significant key
to that success is communication. To ensure quality communication, we ensure that our teachers respond to inquiries from parents/guardians of pupils by the end of the first day following the day which the inquiry is received. Our students have the opportunity to attend enhanced learning days. These enhanced learning days are offered on Tuesday or Thursday. Families may select one day to attend per week. Activities include gym, music, world cultures, art, literacy block and STEM. Attendance on the enhanced learning day is voluntary. What is the microbiome? It’s a colony of good and bad bacteria that exists on the surface of the skin. For decades, we’ve destroyed the microbiome with harsh skin products filled with chemicals. This has resulted in a multitude of skin problems like premature aging, rosacea and sensitivities. This class will teach you amazing new skin breakthroughs and how to protect the skin’s microbiome naturally. Create a youthful appearance without costly botox, injections and fillers. Learn facial exercises and massage to improve circulation, elasticity and firmness. Muscles are an important factor in the condition of the skin. Most of us don’t think about the job they do, but allowing them to atrophy and slacken causes sagging of the face and neck! You can look younger, have a slimmer nose and more refined chin all through facial manipulations. Join us to learn the basics of these revolutionary techniques! NOTE TO PARTICIPANTS: We will be removing makeup to perform the exercises so we can use an essential oil for the massage techniques. ALL CLASSES REQUIRE PRE-REGISTRATION Registration form on page 17
