FITNESS SUITE

NURSERY

All students will receive free membership of MYGYM – our fully equipped, air conditioned fitness suite, which has a built in CD system to create the perfect environment for a work-out. Pop into the Student Support Centre to set up an induction with one of our fully qualified fitness instructors.

The College nursery is located in a separate building within our grounds on Woodhouse Lane, Bishop Auckland.

The nursery provides a caring and well resourced learning environment for children of students, staff and the general public.

Professionally qualified and experienced staff look after children from three months old to four years and eleven months.

The nursery is a fun place where children are encouraged to learn through play, experiencing new and exciting activities while being supported by caring adults.

To ensure your peace of mind and the safety of your child the nursery is fully compliant with all health and safety legislation and is OFSTED inspected.

FOOD & DRINK A range of healthy, nutritional and competitively priced meals are available in the Meeting Place, which serves hot and cold food all day long.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE SCHOOL If you’re thinking of coming to the College but you’re not sure what to study then get in touch to speak to a Careers Adviser. You could gain a qualification whilst still at school, do a work placement with us or come along to one of our taster days.

WORKING WITH SCHOOLS The College works closely with many local secondary schools, giving you the opportunity to come to College and gain a qualification whilst still at school. If you are interested in bricklaying, joinery, computer programming, car maintenance, music, multi-media design, childcare or catering, then we have something for you. We also have many more courses – ask at your school for information about the programmes you can do at the College.

WORK EXPERIENCE Providing places are available, you can come to College to do your work experience. Work placements can include helping computing technicians, office work, catering, helping in the nursery, plus much more.

If you are in Year 9, 10 or 11 you can come along and try a taster in the hairdressing salon or motor vehicle workshop, the art & design centre or the music studio, giving you the chance to find out whether you would like to study at the College.

PERSONAL TUTORS Your personal tutor will help make sure you are on track with your studies, receive any extra learning support you may need and generally help you settle in at College.

CHILDCARE We have a fully OFSTED inspected nursery providing excellent childcare facilities. Students may not have to pay to use the College nursery.

ACTIVITIES A variety of activities are available at the College. You can join our gym or take part in sporting activities, enjoy an outing with other students or display your skills in table tennis, pool or Wii competitions.

VOLUNTEERING We work closely with volunteering organisations to help our students gain new skills and experiences,

improve job prospects, gain additional qualifications, increase confidence and make new friends.

ENTERPRISE UNLOCK YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL TALENT! The College’s enterprising culture allows our students to build upon and harness the spirit of creativity and take on a ‘can do’ attitude.

We have a dedicated Enterprise Development Team and a network of enterprise champions to support students with business ideas.

Our ‘Be Your Own Boss’ drop-in sessions give students the

ARE SAFEGUARDED The safety of all of our students is vital and we will always put safety first. We have a safeguarding policy that is enforced at all times.

Parents and carers are kept informed of individual students’ progress and given the opportunity to discuss any issues or concerns directly with tutors at parents and carers’ evenings held throughout the year.

APPRENTICESHI PS Apprenticeships are practical, hands-on programmes designed to provide you with relevant, practical training, which will enable you to progress within your chosen industry. Apprentices are paid a minimum of £2.65 per hour (October 2012).

Apprentices start at Level 2 unless you have suitable knowledge and vocational experience in your chosen field.

You will work with an employer four days per week and spend one day per week training at the College or in your workplace, working towards your qualification.

Whilst the College provides a support service to help you find an employer, we cannot guarantee you a job.

There are lots of switched on employers looking for switched on apprentices. A bit of planning and investigation will give you the edge.

You can start the ball rolling by applying to companies whilst still at school, with a view to being taken on as an apprentice once you leave.

They may also want you to do some work experience before leaving school.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR JOBS? It looks easy – and it can be if you put in the preparation. If you haven’t had much experience at job hunting don’t worry, the College can help with CV preparation and interview techniques.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? If you secure a job, the College will work with you and your employer to begin your Apprenticeship as soon as possible. If you do not have a job, you should still apply for an Apprenticeship and we will invite you to attend an interview. It is a good idea to visit the College website to look for vacancies and come along to one of our open evenings. You can also register with the National Apprenticeship Service –

WHERE WILL I STUDY? Over the last few years we’ve invested millions of pounds in new facilities for our apprentices. The new centre in Spennymoor, combined with the new facilities at the main campus, provide an outstanding place for Apprenticeship training. FOLLOWING IN THE BOSS’S FOOTSTEPS! Seventeen-year-old Callum Findlay, a former pupil at Sedgefield Community College, is a multi-trade apprentice at Darlington based Andrew Marshall Residential Property Services (AMRP), working as part of its maintenance and refurbishment team.

Company Director Andrew Marshall knows better than most how a successfully completed Apprenticeship can pave the way to a rewarding life-long career. Sixteen years

ago he began an AAT Accountancy modern Apprenticeship – he now runs AMRP, managing as well as providing improvement and maintenance services for hundreds of tenanted properties across Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, Durham and Teesside.

Andrew is full of praise for the way Callum and a second apprentice, Gina Wild, are helping the fastgrowing business expand and he’s planning to recruit more apprentices in the future.

Our vocational Sixth Form Centre, opened in 2011 by Bishop Auckland MP Helen Goodman, provides Level 3 students with a dedicated area in which to study and socialise.

STEP UP WITH 1 st CHOICE Bishop Auckland College and its HE partner, the University of Sunderland, have teamed up to provide school leavers choosing to study a BTEC Level 3 Diploma (equivalent to three A Levels) with the opportunity to step up onto the University’s pilot Progression Scheme – 1st Choice.

The Progression Scheme Level 0 module is designed to establish a pathway for students – so they can make informed choices on their progression from FE to HE and start considering their career options.

This brilliant new scheme will help students with their transition from FE to HE by providing visits to the University, masterclasses, and employability training as well as other activities to support them through the process – they can even achieve a qualification!

The Progression Scheme supports potential undergraduate students applying to the University of Sunderland by offering:

• First hand experience of a university campus and the opportunity to pose questions to current university students (Student Ambassadors) • Information on the HE application process and how to submit strong UCAS applications • HE funding/finance advice and guidance and how to achieve a scholarship currently worth up to £1,500

• An advantage when applying for University of Sunderland programmes through successful completion of the Progression Scheme.

The College Art & Design student used his skills as a filmmaker to capture the positives and negatives of Bishop Auckland market place and shopping town centre through a range of interview pieces with local residents and the business community.

Uploaded on YouTube earlier this year, the film forms part of the Town Teams bid for ÂŁ100,000 funding from the Mary Portas Review Pilot Scheme, which looks into the future of the high streets throughout the country.

Richie, who specialises in rock, blues, funk, pop and more, has played in O2 Academies, festivals and large capacity venues around the country. One of his most notable achievements to date was playing at the International Oyster & Seafood Festival in Ireland to an audience of 20,000 people. The College’s excellent Catering department works with employers to help develop the skills of trainee chefs and catering assistants.

Christian Taylor, former Sunnydale School pupil, studied the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport at Bishop Auckland College having first achieved qualifications in FA Level 1 Coaching Football, Level 1 Safeguarding, FA Emergency First Aid and Level 2 in Multi-Skill Development.

MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS APPRENTICESHIP If you are employed in the maintenance of buildings, structures and their interior and exterior fixtures and fittings, this qualification is for you. The course structure involves you studying a mandatory set of core units, enabling you to develop a variety of skills which include carpentry, plastering, tiling and plumbing with the focus toward repair and maintenance.

Initial training takes place in the workshop, and is followed by on-the-job training for the rest of the course.

Most NVQ assessment is carried out in the workplace. You will be given the opportunity to gain your Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Site Operatives card.

PLUMBING APPRENTICESHIP

LEVEL 2 C&G DIPLOMA IN PLUMBING STUDIES What’s it all about?

This course is designed to equip you with the skills required for employment in the plumbing and domestic heating sector or to progress to Level 3 study. It will also provide you with the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes that are essential for successful performance in working life.

This Apprenticeship covers training in a range of plumbing systems and components and their installation. The plumbing industry is a key part of the UK’s construction industry. I built further experience with Toyota and VW Audi franchise dealers before a period of selfemployment within the haulage industry. After a short spell back on the tools at a Chrysler/Suzuki franchise in Holland, I started teaching at Bishop Auckland College in 2005.

Having taught at all levels, I have enjoyed making a positive difference to the lives of students across all ages. I am now personal tutor and co-ordinator for Level 1 full-time and Level 2 apprentices and we’re currently planning the exciting move to a new workshop at Spennymoor.
