My years at Backstage have been unforgettable I have been dancing at Backstage for eight years and on the competition team for six years. The first class I took I was just a shy little girl but over the years I have grown so much and became so confident in myself. Even when my life was hectic, dance was the only thing that I had control over Dance has taught me many things like being a team player, confidence, and a strong work ethic. Dance is a huge part of my life and with dance I have gained so much confidence in myself. Out of all the things I learned from the dance, the most important thing I have learned is friendship. My dance family is one of the most important things in my life, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them

To my teammates: Over the years, you have been my second family to me. You have always lifted me up when I was feeling down, you have helped so much in more ways than one. Thank you for dancing by my side on stage and teaching me the importance of friendship, perseverance, and confidence.

To my family: Words can’t express how grateful I’m for you and you driving me to the studio every day You have sacrificed so much for me and I’m so grateful for all that you do. Thank you for all the support on doing what I love. I love you guys very much.

To the teachers: Thank you everyone for pushing me into becoming a better dancer. You all saw my potential in the beginning and took the time to push me to become a confident individual and dancer Marty: Thank you for making a Backstage a loving environment and a place I can call my second home, a home where I love to be every day and see my friends and most importantly dance. Bailey: Thank you for all that you do to the team, none of this would be possible without you and your incredible organizing and scheduling skills. Tani: You were my very first teacher at the studio and you have seen become a shy kid to a confident dancer. Thank you for teaching me so many things and working on my solo for the last couple of years I appreciate everything you have done for me and I’m so glad that I met you Rhonda: Over the years you have constantly pushed me to become a stronger dancer. Thank you for all that you have done for me and giving me knowledge of the thing that I love the most. Kelly: You are one of the absolute most hardworking people I know Thank you for all the challenging and sassy combos you gave me and pushing me as a dancer, because of you I have improved so much over the years. Thank you so much. Leta: As my ballet teacher, over the years you have taught me so much about ballet. Thank you for always believing in me even when I didn’t believe in myself Because of you and your great combos you have brough my ballet technique to the next level Jenae: I’ve only known you for less than a year, but you have inspired me so much and given me so much knowledge about dance. Thank you!

Lastly, thank you dance for getting me through some of the hardest times in my life. You have taught me so many things and I wouldn’t be me without you My last message is to never take anything for granted, live every moment because time flies by fast and you should always strive to be the best you can do Thank you and I’ll miss you all!!

MARISA SCHIEHSER Elite; Age 18; 12th Grade at Issaquah High School

- What would you say is your biggest strength? I am proud of my ability to focus on tasks for a long time.

- What do you love to learn about? I love to learn about space and physics.

- If you could be invisible for one day only, what would you do? I would dance without the judgement of others.

- What are you looking forward to most about getting older? I look forward to expressing my style with my own house.

I have been looking forward to my senior year at Backstage for most of my time dancing here, and I can’t believe it’s finally here. I have seen this studio and my fellow dancers change so much over the last 12 years, but I can say confidently that I will miss everything it has become. While dance will always be a part of my life, I will miss the people I have worked with throughout my childhood. Backstage has become a second home for me, because of my love for not just dance but the community, so I must thank everyone who has made my time here so impactful.

Teachers: The Backstage teachers have watched me grow up in every way. They encouraged me to try out for the team before I knew how to straighten my legs and saw me for more than I saw myself. Tani showed me the beauty of instilling confusion and taught me how to love dance without boundaries. Kelly inspired my commitment to being weird and her solos have helped me grow in a way no one else could have. Rhonda consistently challenged me technically and helped me reimagine what it means to be a student and peer. Leta supported me every step of my ballet journey and I would never feel so much pride in my dancing without her. Marty and Bailey have dealt with my untimeliness, cluelessness, and subpar communication skills since I was a mini, and for that I apologize profusely. Their support and understanding will never cease to amaze me, and me and my teammates owe every performance to their hard work.

My teammates: Emily, Chisako, Edie, and Sydney were my rocks entering this year We faced challenges that brought us closer, and after so much time of dancing separately I am so grateful to call you my teammates and friends. You inspire me to be better every day and I have so much hope for the team knowing you will be there to lead. The rest of AG/EL is probably sick of my cheesy pep talks and emotional outbursts, but I will miss the team we have created this year. Your support of each other and constant spirit will continue to inspire me as I move on. I never could have made it this far without my fellow seniors, and I know I can count on Caitlyn and Calla to listen and support me on anything I am going through.

My family: From learning to glue on eyelashes and to slick back hair to driving hours away every weekend, my family has made every experience with dance possible When I joined team in 4th grade, they supported me lovingly as I navigated my first competitive environment. They have given me every opportunity possible and allowed me to immerse myself into the world of dance without hesitation. While the people in my life have been the driving force for my success and fulfillment with dance, the truth is that I never would have made it this far if I hadn’t found love for the art of dance itself. Even without all the bells and whistles of competition, dance has provided a type of expression that I have never encountered elsewhere Each time I come to the studio, the thing that alleviates my exhaustion and pain is passion, which is how I know that dance will always be a part of my life.

Avant Garde; Age 17; 12th Grade at Mercer Island High School

- What would you say is your biggest strength? My creativity, I love thinking outside of the box!

- What do you love to learn about? I love learning about other people and their experiences. Often times strangers have the best stories to tell.

- If you could be invisible for one day only, what would you do? Scare people by opening doors and knocking things off shelves. Maybe go through a drive-through and terrify a poor employee when they realize nobody is there.

- What are you looking forward to most about getting older? Honestly, I would say I’m not jazzed about getting older... It’s scary! But probably the ability to travel and experience the world once I have the means to.

I joined the Backstage family very late compared to many of my fellow dancers, but I felt just as welcomed as if I had been here from the beginning I have been honored to be a part of a fantastic team these past few years, and I am grateful for the amazing memories created in the shared space of Backstage. As I move into the next chapter of my life, Backstage Dance Studio and the people in it will forever hold a special place in my heart.

First, I’d like to thank my teachers, who have been an amazing support system as I've grown at Backstage To Marty and Bailey, I am so grateful for the place I’ve been given on Backstage’s Signature Team these past two years. I am lucky to have shared so many fun memories with you guys. I’d also like to thank you for the opportunities I was given to be a TA and even a dance coach to many students. To Leta, my first teacher at Backstage, you have been an amazing ballet teacher and shoulder to lean on, and I am so excited to have you leading my last Spring Show. To my most recent ballet teacher, Jenae, although you are new to Backstage, I have enjoyed the memories we’ve created so far this year and I’m so happy to share the rest of it with you. Thank you for the time and effort you’ve put into me as a student and our ballet class (and all of our TMI therapy sessions) To Tani, I have loved being a part of your creative wisdom and whimsical-ness; including duo rehearsal with the two “sleepy Pisces”, and the chaos involved in the choreographing of Born Never Asked Thank you for being an inspiring and caring leader To Kelly, I have had an amazing time getting to know you during my time at Backstage whether through being a “big snake” for Pippin to all the combos learned in jazz tech Thank you for being a teacher I could rely on to push me to be the best version of myself, and a special thanks for the work you put into choreographing my first solo, which means so much to me. To Rhonda, thank you for being a teacher I could lean on. Through thick and thin, I could trust that you would be there to listen and give me a wise piece of advice to help me through it. Besides being a strong teacher, you were also a compassionate, thank you. And to the rest of the Backstage Faculty, thank you for your continued effort to make Backstage a welcoming and happy place to be.

Next, I couldn’t have done it without a team. To my fellow dancers, from my little tap friends on Baseline, to my teammates on Mezzo, Avant Garde, and Elite, I have loved dancing with all of you as a family. The memories, good or bad, we’ve created are irreplaceable. Thank you for being welcoming of me as a student three years ago during the complicated and confusing time of zoom dance classes. Every chance I've had to take class with all of you has been one filled with excitement. I hope that is not lost as you guys continue to grow together after my time at Backstage A special acknowledgement to my fellow graduating seniors, Marisa, Caitlyn, and Liz,, thank you for being amazing teammates, I’m excited to see where life takes you all!

Last but not least, I’d like to thank my family. From dance to school to everything in between, none of it would’ve been possible without my parents to support me every step of the way It is no small feat to attend numerous dance competition weekends, pay for classes, costumes, makeup, hairspray, etc , and drive me to and from classes every night, but they did it I am very fortunate to have four parents instead of two To my Dad, Mom, Step-dad, and Step-mom, I am so thankful for all you have done for me From my beginnings as a tiny sixth grader to now that I am auditioning for college dance programs, you have believed in me And to my smaller but no less powerful sister support system, thank you for taking the time out of your lives to watch me. My appreciation and love for you all is so much stronger than I can convey in words. Thank you and love you always.

Elite; Age 17; 12th Grade at Newport High School

- What would you say is your biggest strength? Being open to new experiences is my biggest strength. I am willing to try out new things and stay curious.

- What do you love to learn about? I would love to learn old-school Hip Hop style dances, take classes from teachers around the world, and meet amazing dancers. Also, I have been obsessed with Pilates recently, and I wish to take more Pilates classes.

- If you could be invisible for one day only, what would you do? I would go on an airplane and go to a random destination for vacation.

- What are you looking forward to most about getting older? I wish to live in a small apartment with a Yorkshire Terrier. Dance and workout every day. And travel as much as I can.
