SPRING 2018 SESSION INFORMATION

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: FEES Enrollment is $195 for the 14-week Spring 2018 Session. Credit Cards and cash accepted; please make checks payable to the Museum of Making Music. This program fee is non-refundable and there will be no refunds or credits for missed sessions. To enroll, call (760) 304-5809 or visit www.museumofmakingmusic.org/education/north-coast-strings

SCHOLARSHIPS Partial and full scholarships are available to qualified applicants. Please contact Alisa Arkinzadeh at the Museum of Making Music for an application and more information: alisaa@museumofmakingmusic.org

PRINT MUSIC The Museum will LEND all participants sheet music for the session. This music must be returned at the end of the session. Please make markings in pencil and erase before returning. If you would like to purchase the music, we will provide the website for the music selections and you may purchase on your own.

PRACTICE RECORDINGS The Museum provides online audio recordings of the music being performed to aid in personal practice. Links to the audio can be found online at: www.museumofmakingmusic.org/education/north-coast-strings

PHOTO/VIDEO RELEASE By participating, you grant permission to the Museum of Making Music and/or NAMM to use photographs or videos obtained during your participation in any North Coast Strings rehearsal or concert in any promotional, educational or other materials produced by or for the Museum of Making Music and hereby waive any and all right to control inspect, or approve such usage. If you do not agree to this please contact Julia Fister.

SPRING 2018 PERSONNEL: ALYZE DREILING, CONDUCTOR

GORDON GRUBBS, COACH, CELLO

Alyze Dreiling is an award-winning conductor, and accomplished violinist and violist in San Diego. In addition to serving as the YPO Soloists Ensemble Artistic Director and Conductor since 2010, she is adjunct faculty at Grossmont Colllege, University of San Diego and USD Chamber Music Festival. Dreiling is a violinist with Trio Licenza, the piano trio, in residence at USD, and a member of the California Consort.

Gordon Grubbs, cellist with the Grossmont Symphony String Quintet and principal cellist with the Grossmont Symphony Orchestra, has performed in chamber music and as soloist throughout Southern California and Mexico. Grubbs joined the Wichita Symphony Orchestra while pursuing a degree in music performance at Wichita State University. He has toured extensively in Mexico with the Camerata de Ensenada de Todos Santos and recorded with the Orquesta Pro Musica Ensenada.

ANDREA ALTONA, COACH, VIOLIN I Andrea Altona has trained extensively in teaching the Suzuki Methods as well as the Mark O’Connor Method and has over 20 years of teaching experience. She served as President of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 325 from 2012-2016. Altona has performed with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra (Orchestra Nova), as substitute with the San Diego Symphony and San Diego Opera, the New World Symphony, and has performed on several motion picture scores including Freaky Friday and Legally Blonde II.

BERTRAM TURETZKY, COACH, BASS

JUDY COKER, COACH, VIOLIN II

Paula Simmons received her bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Viterbo College and her Master of Music in Viola Performance from Florida State University. Before moving to San Diego, she performed with the El Paso Symphony, the Pro Musica Chamber Ensemble in El Paso Texas, and the Jacksonville Symphony in Jacksonville Florida. Since moving to California, Simmons has freelanced extensively in the San Diego area and the Baja with a variety of orchestras, chamber ensembles and guest performers including Starlight Theatre, San Diego Comic Opera, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Orquestra de Baja, Camarata de Ensenada, the Bolshoi and San Francisco Ballet, The Moody Blues, Johnny Mathis, Smokey Robinson, Burt Bacharach, Dion Warwick, Natalie Cole, and Michael Crawford. In November 2008, she became the founding conductor for the North Coast Strings.

Judy Coker has her Masters in Performance from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins. She is a past member of both the San Diego Symphony and San Diego Opera Orchestra. Coker also taught string ensemble at Francis Parker School in San Diego for 22 years before retiring.

JENNIFER ALBRENT, COACH, VIOLA Jennifer Albrent has her BA in Music Performance from Boston University and her MFA in Viola Performance from California Institute of the Arts. Albrent has been an Arts Administrator at The Neighborhood Music School and the Khabele School and is now a self-employed performer and teacher.

Bertram Turetzky is a contemporary American double bass (contrabass) soloist, teacher, and author of The Contemporary Contrabass (1974, 1989), a book that looked at a number of new and interesting ways of playing the double bass including featuring it as a solo performance vehicle with no other instrumental accompaniment. Turetzky is a Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of California, San Diego.
