ARTIST STUDIOS

With this building I wanted to explore modularity, and a slight sense of instability. I liken it to a game of Jenga, with pieces extruded from the main core. Given that the building was going to be designed with artist in mind I also wanted it to feel sculptural, so while the push an pull feel of a game of Jenga you also get the sense that the structure may have been carved out of a larger cube. As it related to the area and the artist the goal of my design was to create a space that reflected the transition from residential to commercial that I feel occurs between Spring Garden and Vine Street. While my building doesn’ t necessarily scream high rise it does start to pull your eyes upward much like the apartment buildings that surround it. With in the building I wanted the studio spaces to offer each artist a bit of privacy and a unique view of the surrounding area. INSPIRATION

THE IMAGINATION STATION For this project I was asked to design a personal artifact that represented me as a designer. For me this was the first time I had been asked to design without a program, and it proved to be a creatively liberating experience. Considering that my design style is based on clean edges, rectilinear shapes and playing with the idea shifting masses I wanted to design something that embodied that approach. This line of thinking led me to Tetris, and the idea of fitting the modular blocks together as they dropped from the sky. Once I knew what I wanted to do it was just a matter of creating a piece that allowed for the user to experience that idea of playing with form. As a design student I felt that having a project that other students could interact with and make their own was more interesting than a set piece that reflected my vision only.

Below Is The BaseStation For The Piece The Imagination Everyone is a designer in their own right. With this artifact I wanted to return to the basics of building, the simplicity of the block. Inspired by both Tetris and building blocks I chose to make a dynamic and interactive piece that while simple would allow anyone who viewed it to also shape it in their image.

This is an interactive piece, and you are encouraged to construct your own artifact using the given shapes. The pieces use a tongue in groove system. Slide them together along their respective tracks and build until your heart's content.

WILLIAMSBURG TOWERS

This project was designed as part of the ACSA Steel Competition. This was a group project where I worked with NyTesia Streeter to design a mixed use multifamily housing unit. When designing the Williamsburg Towers we looked to the idea of community spaces and great views as the guiding principles for our design. Located in the a rapidly developing Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, NY we wanted to make sure that this building served as more than just housing. Too often do people living in their high rise apartment and never take the time out to get to know their neighbors. Taking cues from the parks popping up in the surrounding area we made it a point to create various gather spaces both on the ground level and the upper levels of the structure. In the taller of the two towers we created a gathering space for the tenants just outside of the elevator, a wall of glass leading to patios that offer views of the Manhattan Skyline. In the smaller tower on Kent Avenue we have two bridges. One bridge is primarily for circulation between towers, while the second is another community outdoor spaces that allows for tenants to gather in a slightly more public space as they stay out of the way of the commuters below. Among the commercial spaces there is a plaza feature green space on the corner of 11th and Wythe with a view of The William Vale Hotel.

Determine Size Of The Site

Extrude full square footage of site to house commercial spaces.

View coming off of Kent Ave. and heaing up the stairs and to the main tower.

Place block atop commercial block to house the residential units.

Carve away sections of commercial block to improve circulation and create gathering spaces.

I chose to leave out the physical model as NyTesia took on sole control of its assembly. We worked equally on the design, and I was responsible for the digital representation and diagrams. Divide residential block in to two separate blocks to ensure all residents have views of the the Manhattan skyline and river.

Raise the height of the second tower to provide line of site to the residents in the building that woul have been blocked by the shorter tower. Cut hole beneath structure to allow residents to enter towers from street level.

Connect the towers via a sky bridge to provide residents with outdoor space, and path ways to various facilities provided in both buildings.

The purpose of the Center was to serve as a place for the homeless to Green Roof get back on their feet and become acclimated to society. My general idea was to create a building that allowed them to establish "roots" in Scale: 1/8”placing = 1’-0 the community. In design I lowered the building below grade, the gallery and gathering space underground. Moving upward all of my floors extend off of a central core, each floor serving a special purpose in the rehabilitation process. By studying the neighborhood learned Fifth I Floor WorkShops of points of interest in the community we'd like to incorporate into our Glassprogram. Those points worked to influence the extension of each floor in a particular direction. The wooded spaces of the building are to give everything a connection to the wooden "core" and also create a feeling of warmth in the more private areas.

PEARL'S LANTERN

The task for this project was to design a dwelling that responded to a harsh environment. There were several location choices and I chose to build in the Florida Everglades, Pearl Bay specifically. Pearl's Lantern was a designed as an alternative to the Chickees as resting place for adventures kayaking their way through the Florida Everglades. Through a combination of precisely spaced light wood framing clad in translucent polycarbonate the floating building stands out against the lush green of the surrounding mangroves. At night where the chickees would be almost impossible to see, Pearls Lanterns set themselves apart by glowing against the night back drop. With doors and windows that fit so neatly into the framing it leaves nearly no profile against the smooth faç ade the buildings resemble floating lanterns. During the day all of the spaces can be opened to allow one to truly appreciate the natural environment around them while also granting them the comforts of home.
