Broad St. Ministry

1

Here is an elevation done in AutoCAD of the front facade of the Broad St. Ministry located 315 S. Broad St. in Philadelphia, PA. The goal of this project was to recreate the facade of the church in AutoCAD with three other students. As team lead it was my job to create the guide lines and assign each section the group member was to work on. The portion of the drawing done by me was the middle of the building between the two towers and just above the doors. When all of the sections were complete it was my job to join the pieces together in a separate CAD file and plot it.

1987 Knockout Way

1987 Knockout Way was our main and final project for ADC 263, Digital Animation and Rendering. The focus of this class was to gain knowledge of 3ds Max as it pertained to modeling, animating, and rendering. The layout of the space was decided by the professor, but it was left up to us to build and furnish it. I tend to lean towards dark and moody scenes to in addition to rendering a night time interior also did two day light scenes, adding in a few people with Photoshop in post-production.

Cardboard Chair

ADC 109: Design Studio 1

In Studio 1 our most involved project was the building of a chair strong enough support the weight of a full grown person out of four pieces of cardboard. To add to the challenge of the task we were also unable to use any adhesive to hold the chair together. What I ended up deciding on for my design was a cluster of triangles of varying heights. In order to hold them together I cut the excess cardboard into strips, twisting them until they were malleable enough to use a thread. Once I had my makeshift thread I strategically punched holes in the interior and exterior of the base of the chair, and bound it together using the thread.

Hackadamia In Studio 2, ADC 159 I was asked to create a genre specific bookstore with a cafe within an existing space. The genre I settled on was computer programing and hacking. I created the floor plan with the thought of a computers motherboard in mind. The door would serve as a USB port, transferring the customers into the store and then allowing them to break off to the sections of the store they cared to see. The checkout counters for both the cafe and the bookstore are side by side, the ceiling above them dropping slightly. My thought there was to create a “window” within the store, similar to a browser window where you’d check out for an online purchase. Color coding the circuit board was done to help direct people to specific needs within the space.

Cloud 9 Cafe

In ADC 192: Color and Lighting I was introduced to the principles of color and light as they apply to interior design. It was about controlling the interaction of colors within spaces in order to achieve a desired look and feel. Our final project was to design a cafe in a corner lot of a city block. To me cafes generally have a cramped feel to them. I think it’s generally due to the tendency for people to use warm colors within the spaces. I tried to get away from the norm, by exploring a palette of pastels. While the space isn’t all that big, the white walls and large windows give a feel of spaciousness. 7

First Floor Plan

Second Floor Plan The Montauk Beach House assignment was part of my presentation class. The objective of this project was to recreate the house via AutoCAD, a 3d modeling program as well as a physical model. We were given were the floor plans in a jpg file and it was our job to import the image into AutoCAD and scale it accordingly. Once I recreated the floor plan I joined the lines and extruded the lines into 3d shapes. Once I finished the 3d CAD drawing I exported it to Autodesk 3ds Max for texturing and rendering. I also did a bit of post-production with the render in Photoshop.

Barcelona Pavilion

ADC 163: Digital Documentation

In ADC 163 I had to design and build the world famous Barcelona Pavilion in Revit. I was given the floor plans, and general dimensions and told to recreate the structure. Given the simplicity of the structure I made it a special point to focus on getting photorealistic renders as I felt the model alone wouldn’t offer much of a wow factor. Exporting 3ds Max, I created a custom water texture that felt capture the serene feeling I imagine would accompany one who gazed over the reflecting pool. Unable to find the actual backdrop of Barcelona for the pavilion I chose to use general non distinct trees.

Residence

ADC 163: Digital Documentation

The residence was our second assignment in ACD 163. The challenge of this assignment was the introduction of multiple stairs and levels of livable space. We were also introduced to site planning and landscaping. For this project I furnished the Livingroom, dining room, kitchen and master bed room. The Kitchen, Dining, and Living rooms were all required as part of the program. I chose to add in a render of the bedroom to get a better idea of the size of the space. I feel that going beyond what is asked in an assignment in a case like this adds to the richness of the final product.

Bungalow

ADC 163: Digital Documentation

The Bungalow was our final project in ADC 163. The difference in this project was the lack of instruction we received. We were given a floor plan as well as elevations of how the building should look, and told to recreate it. This was an exercise to see how well we understood what we learned and how easily we could apply it. Given the simplicity of the house I chose to export the Revit model to 3ds Max or additional landscape modeling and rendering. In my rendering and post production I wasn’t to make the shadows look as realistic as possible. I can honestly say that I accomplished the exact look I was going for.

Eve’s Aerie

17

For this project I was tasked with designing rooftop living space for a young college student named Eve. With no need for a bathroom or kitchen my main focus was to give Eve spaces to both work, and relax. Using a stacked structure I chose to make the first floor of her space a green space, where she could grow plants, meditate, or do whatever she’d like. The second and third floors are both more intimate spaces. Instead of traditional windows I chose to go with a more punched out feel. While it allows in light I felt the seemingly random openings would help to the sometimes weary mind of a college student.

Artist Loft

In designing this artist loft I was asked to create aspace that could be used as both a living space, work space and a gallery. My main idea was to create the most open space possible, minimizing the effects of necessary features on circulation. The space is laid out on a grid, and the window wall plays on that grid. By offsetting the pattern of the windows I wanted to offer visual variety and the feeling of movement up the wall in an otherwise simple space. 18

Artist Studios Expanding on the theme from the Artist Loft project we were asked to create a building with ten studio spaces that included a utility sink, storage space, and lav. In addition to those studio spaces the build was also to include a collaborative work space as well as a gallery. My design settled on a six story stacked building with a central core. I decided to avoid long corridors to make it easier on the artist when trying to move their work and supplies in and out of the building. Also I felt that with the new construction going on in the area it wouldn’t be too long before natural light was hard to come by. Building vertically would allow for the upper floors to still gain direct sunlight even with the higher buildings popping up in the surrounding area.
