PEARL'S LANTERN Design Studio 8

The task for this project was to design a dwelling that responded to a harsh environment. There were several location choices and I chose to build in the Florida Everglades, Pearl Bay specifically. Pearl's Lantern was a designed as an alternative to the Chickees as resting place for adventures kayaking their way through the Florida Everglades. The greatest design challenge I faced with this project was creating permanent housing in an ever changing marsh environment. Through a combination of precisely spaced light wood framing clad in translucent polycarbonate the floating building stands out against the lush green of the surrounding mangroves. At night where the chickees would be almost impossible to see, Pearls Lanterns set themselves apart by glowing against the night back drop. With doors and windows that fit so neatly into the framing it leaves nearly no profile against the smooth façade the buildings resemble floating lanterns. During the day all of the spaces can be opened to allow one to truly appreciate the natural environment around them while also granting them the comforts of home.

ARTIST STUDIOS Design Studio 3

With this building I wanted to explore modularity, and a slight sense of instability. I liken it to a game of Jenga, with pieces extruded from the main core. Given that the building was going to be designed with artist in mind I also wanted it to feel sculptural, so while the push and pull feel of a game of Jenga you also get the sense that the structure may have been carved out of a larger cube. As it related to the area and the artist the goal of my design was to create a space that reflected the transition from residential to commercial that I feel occurs between Spring Garden and Vine Street. While my building doesn't necessarily scream high rise it does start to pull your eyes upward much like the apartment buildings that surround it. Within the building I wanted the studio spaces to offer each artist a bit of privacy and a unique view of the surrounding area. INSPIRATION

WILLIAMSBURG TOWERS Design Studio 6

This project was designed as part of the ACSA Steel Competition. This was a group project where I worked with NyTesia Streeter to design a mixed use multifamily housing unit. When designing the Williamsburg Towers we looked to the idea of community spaces and great views as the guiding principles for our design. Located in the a rapidly developing Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, NY we wanted to make sure that this building served as more than just housing. Too often do people living in their high rise apartment and never take the time out to get to know their neighbors. Taking cues from the parks popping up in the surrounding area we made it a point to create various gather spaces both on the ground level and the upper levels of the structure. In the taller of the two towers we created a gathering space for the tenants just outside of the elevator, a wall of glass leading to patios that offer views of the Manhattan Skyline. In the smaller tower on Kent Avenue we have two bridges. One bridge is primarily for circulation between towers, while the second is another community outdoor spaces that allows for tenants to gather in a slightly more public space as they stay out of the way of the commuters below. Among the commercial spaces there is a plaza feature green space on the corner of 11th and Wythe with a view of The William Vale Hotel.

Determine Size Of The Site

Extrude full square footage of site to house commercial spaces.

Divide residential block in to two separate blocks to ensure all residents have views of the the Manhattan skyline and river.

Place block atop commercial block to house the residential units.

Raise the height of the second tower to provide line of site to the residents in the building that would have been blocked by the shorter tower. Cut hole beneath structure to allow residents to enter towers from street level.

Carve away sections of commercial block to improve circulation and create gathering

Connect the towers via a sky bridge to provide residents with outdoor space, and path ways to various facilities provided in both buildings.
