l museo también muestra cómo era la vida en la zona del canal, las primeras reivindicaciones de los panameños sobre su territorio, la Operación Soberanía, los hechos del 9 de enero de 1964 (con la bandera original que desencadenó los hechos de aquel día histórico), el canal en manos panameñas y la ampliación del canal. Además de su exhibición permanente, el museo cuenta ahora con la exhibición “Vanguardias artísticas en el París de Coco Chanel” y en mayo, mes de los museos, montará una exposición especial sobre “Mares fortificados y la globalización”, que irá acompañada de un seminario internacional sobre rutas marítimas. El museo, ubicado en el área histórica de la ciudad, está en el edificio en donde funcionaron las primeras oficinas de la Compañía Universal del Canal Interoceánico a finales del siglo XIX. La institución hace parte del International Council of Museums (ICOM), de la American Alliance of Museums (AMM) y fue la primera institución no estadounidense afiliada al Smithsonian.
