n Copa Airlines nos enorgullece anunciarle que, a partir de julio, agregaremos tres nuevos destinos a la red de rutas que servimos a través del Hub de las Américas, en Ciudad de Panamá. En primer lugar, el 17, iniciaremos vuelos a Bridgetown, capital de la isla caribeña de Barbados. Posteriormente, el 18 y el 24, lo haremos a las ciudades brasileñas de Salvador y Fortaleza, respectivamente.

Estos vuelos fortalecerán nuestra presencia y consolidarán nuestro liderazgo en el Nordeste brasileño y en el arco de las Antillas Menores, ampliando la conectividad aérea desde el Hub de las Américas, en Panamá, y generando también importantes oportunidades para el desarrollo de la actividad turística y comercial en estos destinos. De esta manera, Copa Airlines conecta en su red de rutas en el continente a 78 ciudades en 32 países de Norte, Centro y Suramérica y el Caribe.

Bridgetown fue declarada por la UNESCO como Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad. La isla también es famosa por sus aguas color turquesa, la experiencia única de sus paisajes y el encanto informal de sus habitantes.

Serviremos esta ruta los martes y viernes, partiendo desde Panamá a las 9:30 a.m. y llegando a Bridgetown a la 1:00 p.m. En sentido inverso, partiremos el mismo día desde la capital de Barbados a las 2:00 p.m. y arribaremos al Hub de las Américas a las 5:00 p.m.

Por otro lado, Salvador y Fortaleza, capitales de los estados brasileños de Bahía y Ceará, respectivamente, son famosas por atesorar muestras del rico patrimonio histórico, natural y cultural de Brasil. El vuelo a Fortaleza partirá desde Panamá, los miércoles y domingos, a las 3:25 p.m. y llegará a destino a las 11:57 p.m. El servicio en sentido inverso será los lunes y jueves, partiendo a las 2:13 a.m. y llegando a Panamá a las 6:45 a.m. Para Salvador, el vuelo desde Panamá partirá todos los martes y viernes a las 3:15 p.m. y aterrizará a las 00:30 a.m. del día siguiente. El vuelo de regreso saldrá los miércoles y sábados a la 1:30 a.m. y llegará a Panamá a las 6:50 a.m.

t Copa Airlines we’re proud to announce that, beginning in July, we’re adding three new destinations to our network of routes served through our Hub of the Americas in Panama City. First, on July 17th we’ll begin flights to Bridgetown, the capital of the Caribbean island of Barbados. Then, we’ll begin flying to the Brazilian cities of Salvador on the 18th and Fortaleza on the 24th.

These flights will strengthen our presence and leadership in northeastern Brazil and the Lesser Antilles Arc, increasing aerial connectivity from the Hub of the Americas in Panama and creating major opportunities for developing tourism and business activities in these destinations. These new flights are part of the way Copa Airlines connects its network of routes to 78 cities in 32 countries in North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean.

Bridgetown, Barbados has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is famous for its turquoise waters and unique landscapes as well as the informal charm of its inhabitants.

We’ll serve this route every Tuesday and Friday, leaving Panama at 9:30 a.m. and arriving in Bridgetown at 1:00 p.m. The return flights will depart from Barbados the same days at 2:00 p.m., arriving at the Hub of the Americas at 5:00 p.m.

The cities Salvador and Fortaleza, capitals of the Brazilian states of Bahía and Ceará respectively, are famous for their wealth of Brazilian historical, natural, and cultural treasures. Flights to Fortaleza will leave Panama every Wednesday and Sunday at 3:25 p.m., reaching their destination at 11:57 p.m., with return flights on Mondays and Thursdays at 2:13 a.m., arriving in Panama at 6:45 a.m. Flights to Salvador leave Panama every Tuesday and Friday at 3:15 p.m., landing at 12:30 a.m. the following day. India ¿próxima meta de Latinoamérica?

ras consolidar su relación comercial con China, el próximo país en la cartilla de baile de Latinoamérica pudiera ser India, o al menos eso sugiere un informe reciente liberado por el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), por medio del Instituto para la Integración de América Latina (INTAL). En la región, el gigante asiático tiene acuerdos comerciales firmados con Chile y Mercosur, lo cual se traduce en un intercambio de 30.000 millones de dólares, doscientas empresas indias establecidas que contratan a unos 50.000 latinoamericanos e inversiones por valor de 20.000 millones de dólares. Actualmente, solo Perú negocia un acuerdo comercial con India, pero hay espacio para otros países en un mercado de 1.300 millones de personas y una economía que crecerá un promedio de 7.8% anual durante el próximo lustro. www.iadb.org

fter consolidating its trade relationship with China, the next country on Latin America’s dance card could be India, as suggested by a recent study conducted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) through its Institute for the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean (INTAL). The East Asian giant has signed trade agreements with Chile and Mercosur, which translates into an exchange of $30 billion dollars. Two hundred established Indian companies employ around 50,000 Latin Americans and the country has investments in the region worth 20 billion dollars. Currently, only Perú is negotiating a trade agreement with India, but there is room for other countries in India’s 1.3-billion people market and economy projected to grow an average of 7.8% annually over the next five years. www.iadb.org

Virus extremos / Extreme Viruses

L

os virus no son considerados seres vivos, pues no son organismos y no tienen vida. Para “reproducirse” o hacerse una copia de sí mismos necesitan obligatoriamente una célula de algún ser vivo. Básicamente son un ácido nucleico (ADN) rodeado por una envoltura de proteínas, y por eso son difíciles de combatir. Los virus son tan especiales que pueden encontrarse en lugares extremos, como en las aguas termales del Parque Nacional Yellowstone.

Un estudio liderado por Rebecca Hochstein, de la Universidad Estatal de Montana, encontró un tipo de virus capaz de existir en aguas muy ácidas y a una temperatura de 80 °C y descubrió el mecanismo por el cual este tipo de virus cambia de forma y de partículas para poder interactuar con sus hospederas celulares. Este descubrimiento podría ser usado para la creación de medicinas.

Los hallazgos de este estudio, recientemente publicado en la revista científica de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias (PNAS), fueron posibles gracias a una nueva tecnología en microscopios: la criomicroscopía electrónica, cuyos desarrolladores ganaron el Premio Nobel de Química en 2017. Estos microscopios disparan electrones a proteínas previamente congeladas y producen imágenes de alta resolución, las cuales son usadas para crear modelos a escala atómica.

iruses are not considered living beings because they aren’t organisms and have no independent life. To “reproduce” or make copies of themselves they need the cells of a living “host” being. Basically, viruses are a nucleic acid (DNA) surrounded by an envelope of protein, which makes them difficult to combat.

Viruses are so special that they can even be found in extreme places like the Yellowstone National Park hot springs. A study directed by Montana State University’s Rebecca Hochstein discovered a strain of virus capable of living in extremely acidic waters and temperatures of up to 176°F. The study determined the mechanism used by this type of virus to change its shape and particles to interact with its cellular hosts. This discovery could lead to the creation of new drugs.

The findings of this study, published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) scientific journal, were made possible by electronic cryomicroscopy, a new microscope technology that earned its developers the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. These microscopes fire electrons at previously frozen proteins and produce high-resolution images, which are used to create atomic-scale models.

Debido a la abundancia de polifenoles que contiene, ya se había demostrado que el vino es bueno para el colon y el corazón. Ahora, un nuevo estudio realizado por Adelaida Esteban-Fernández y colaboradores del Instituto de Investigación en Ciencias de la Alimentación y publicado en el Diario de Agricultura y Química Alimentaria informa que los polifenoles del vino también podrían ser buenos para su salud oral.

Los polifenoles son metabolitos secundarios de defensa que se encuentran en numerosas especies de plantas y sus frutos.

El vino tinto es una rica fuente de polifenoles dietéticos que posee una combinación única de estructuras fenólicas.

Los investigadores comprobaron el efecto de dos polifenoles del vino tinto, así como extractos de uva y vino tinto disponibles comercialmente, en bacterias que se adhieren a los dientes y encías, causando la placa dental, caries y enfermedades periodontales. Los científicos descubrieron que dos polifenoles del vino, el ácido cafeico y el p-cumárico, reducen la capacidad de las bacterias para adherirse a las células. As it had already been shown, wine, when consumed in moderation, is good for the colon and the heart thanks to the abundance of polyphenols it contains. Now a new study carried out by Adelaida Esteban-Fernández and associates at the Food Science Research Institute and published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry has announced that red wine polyphenols could also be good for your oral health.

Researchers tested the effects of two red wine polyphenols, as well as commercially available grape extracts and red wine, on bacteria that adhere to teeth and gums, causing dental plaque, cavities, and periodontal diseases. Scientists discovered that two wine polyphenols, caffeic acid and p-coumaric, reduce the ability of bacteria to adhere to cells. These polyphenols combined with Streptococcus dentisani, believed to be an oral probiotic, to help repel bacteria.

Condenada durante 85 años a servir de cárcel de máxima seguridad, esta isla del Golfo de Chiriquí logró proteger su invaluable tesoro de la colonización y la explotación. Hoy, la joya del Pacífico panameño guarda intactos sus bosques mientras sus aguas color turquesa sirven de hábitat a ballenas, tortugas, delfines, toda clase de peces y una gran abundancia de corales.

Sentenced to serve as a maximumsecurity prison for 85 years, this island in the Gulf of Chiriquí was able to protect its invaluable treasure from colonization and exploitation.

Today, this jewel of the Panamanian Pacific preserves its pristine forests and turquoise waters as a habitat for whales, turtles, dolphins, abundant coral, and all kinds of fish.

oiba, la joya del Pacífico panameño, fue durante 85 años una cárcel de máxima seguridad, gracias a lo cual logró proteger su tesoro salvaje de la colonización y la explotación. Desde 1919 hasta 2004, esta isla fue el lugar de aislamiento para los presos más peligrosos del país, los cuales vivían custodiados por el hostil bosque tropical primario que habitaban. Es por esto que un 80% de la isla (que abarca unos quinientos kilómetros cuadrados) se salvó de ser intervenida por el ser humano y la selva logró sobrevivir frente al rápido desarrollo de los siglos XX y XXI.

Ubicada en el Golfo de Chiriquí, al suroeste del país, Coiba es la isla más grande del Pacífico panameño y hace parte de un archipiélago compuesto por 38 islas e islotes. Es un conjunto perfecto en donde islas verdes tupidas de vida se rodean de calmas y tormentosas aguas color turquesa, llenas de peces grandes, ballenas, tortugas, delfines, corales y todos esos seres bellos que un océano sano nos regala.

he island of Coiba in the Gulf of Chiriquí served as a maximumsecurity prison for over 85 years, which protected its invaluable wild treasures from colonization and exploitation. From 1919 to 2004, the island served as a seclusion center for the country’s most dangerous prisoners, who were contained on the island by the hostile primary tropical forest surrounding them. This allowed 80% of the island (an area of about 500 square kilometers) to escape intervention by humans, permitting the jungle to survive the rapid development of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Located in the Gulf of Chiriquí southwest of the mainland, Coiba is the largest island in the Panamanian Pacific. It is part of an archipelago made up of 38 islands and islets. This select group of lush, green islands filled with nature is surrounded by both calm and stormy turquoise waters in which large fish, whales, turtles, and dolphins swim among coral and all the beauty of a healthy ocean.

They are scarce in other parts of the region due to illegal fishing, but in Coiba, they swim among the tourists who come from all over the world to discover the beauty of the sea through scuba diving or snorkeling.

En Coiba son bienvenidos todos los amantes del mar. Para los novatos, que van a probar por primera vez la sensación de respirar bajo la superficie, hay aguas calmas, someras y llenas de vida; allí los corales forman arrecifes, y en lo que parecieran piscinas gigantes, abundan cangrejos, erizos y morenas, entre otras especies. Para los experimentados, que buscan aventuras más fuertes y lugares más extremos, hay paredes rocosas con corriente, aguas algo tormentosas, pero con tesoros únicos al alcance de las burbujas. Coiba es el hogar por excelencia de los bosques de corales suaves del Pacífico, y es precisamente en estas aguas tormentosas en donde habitan unas cuarenta especies.

Coiba welcomes all sea lovers. For newcomers experiencing the sensation of breathing under water for the first time, there are calm, shallow waters filled with marine life. Coral reefs form here and crabs, sea urchins, and moray eels, among other species, abound in what appear to be giant pools. For the experienced seeking more extreme adventures, there are rocky walls with stronger currents and more turbulent waters offering unique treasures within reach of scuba divers. Coiba is the home par excellence of the soft coral forests of the Pacific.

The more turbulent waters are inhabited by some forty different marine species.

Coiba is part of an archipelago, comprised of 38 islands and islets, that was declared a National Park in 1991 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

ith Coiba nearby, there is no need to visit an aquarium.

At both ends of the island, in either calm or turbulent waters, a large number of marine animals are relatively easy to observe. On a good day you may even spot a whale shark hanging around Wahoo Rock.

Although this shark reaches lengths of up to 40 feet, it has no teeth and must use a unique food filtration system similar to that of whales to feed on krill and other plankton organisms.

Due to their large size and docile behavior, whale sharks can be carefully observed, if a minimum distance of six feet is maintained and other safety instructions are followed.

En ambos extremos, tanto en las aguas calmas como en las tormentosas, habita una gran cantidad de animales marinos relativamente fáciles de observar. En un buen día es posible ver a un tiburón ballena merodeando en los alrededores de la roca Wahoo. Aunque este pez, de aproximadamente doce metros de largo, es un tiburón, no tiene dientes; por el contrario, tiene un sistema de filtración de alimento parecido al de las ballenas, pues se alimenta de kril y demás organismos del plancton. urante un chapuzón en los alrededores de la roca Don Juan también es posible ver grupos de tiburones aletiblancos de arrecife, que miden unos dos metros y también son inofensivos. Es común observarlos en cuevas bajo las rocas, nadando sobre el arrecife o en bancos de arena entre las colonias de coral. Por supuesto, se deben observar a la distancia y respetando siempre el espacio personal de tres metros. Y al visitar El Faro es probable encontrarse con mantarrayas gigantes y grandes cardúmenes de peces pala y jureles. También hay oportunidad de apreciar “las estaciones de limpieza”, en donde los peces más grandes esperan a que los más pequeños, con ayuda de algunos cangrejos, limpien sus escamas, agallas e incluso el interior de su boca.

uring a dip in the waters surrounding Don Juan Rock it is also possible to see groups of whitetip reef sharks, which measure about six feet in length and are also harmless. They are commonly seen in caves under rocks, swimming on the reef, or on sandbanks between the coral colonies. Though they are harmless, again, it’s a good idea to observe from a distance of about ten feet. If you visit El Faro you’re likely to encounter giant stingrays and large shoals of paddlefish and jacks. You may also have an opportunity to appreciate the “cleaning stations,” where larger fish wait for smaller ones, with the help of certain crabs, to clean their scales, gills, and even the inside of their mouths.

Estos mamíferos marinos, de hasta dieciséis metros de largo, son migratorios; vienen de las aguas frías del sur, en donde se alimentan, a aguas más calmas y cálidas del trópico, a tener sus crías. Si se presta atención durante los buceos y se escucha más allá de las burbujas, es posible oír el canto de un macho que busca a su hembra.

n September and October, Coiba offers visitors one of the best marine shows in the world: the breathtaking jumps of the humpback whales.

These marine mammals, up to 52 feet in length, are migratory. They swim up from the cold southern waters where they feed, into the calm, warm waters of the tropics, to give birth. If you listen carefully beyond the bubbles while scuba diving, you may hear the song of a male searching for his mate.

El conjunto de islas llama la atención de los científicos por su alta biodiversidad, endemismo (número de especies propias del lugar) y conectividad.

En cada rincón, en cada roca y bajo cada ola hay miles de tesoros submarinos listos para ser descubiertos. Por ello, no es gratuito que, tras el cierre de la prisión y considerando el buen estado de sus bosques y mares, la isla fuera declarada Parque Nacional en 1991 —la reserva marina más grande de Panamá— y, un poco más tarde, en 2005, Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, debido a su gran biodiversidad y alto grado de endemismo (especies únicas que solamente se encuentran en un lugar). Los tesoros de Coiba no han pasado desapercibidos y cada año aumenta el número de personas que quiere venir a conocer este mundo salvaje a solo 25 kilómetros de tierra firme.

In every corner, on every rock, and under every wave lie thousands of underwater treasures ready to be discovered. It’s no wonder that, after the prison closed, and given the near pristine condition of its forests and seas, the island was declared a National Park in 1991 —Panama’s largest marine reserve–, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, due to its amazing biodiversity and high degree of endemism (unique species found in one place only).

he creation of the park attracted increasing numbers of local and foreign tourists. To ensure the preservation of this wild jewel of Panama, a management plan was designed that took into account the surrounding communities, visitors to the park, and those in charge of transporting, lodging, feeding, and guiding these visitors.

To prevent the tourist boom from damaging the fragile ecosystems and to maintain control over all activities, specific scuba diving and snorkeling areas were designated. Some of them were initially marked with buoys to facilitate the mooring of boats and avoid anchoring and the damages that this generates. A recent alliance between NatGeo, the MarViva foundation, and local diving operators made possible the installation of additional buoys at twelve diving sites, bringing the total number of marked sites in the northeastern part of the park to 22. A larger number of buoys reduces the pressure from tourists at any one site by distributing visitors across different sites.

Obviamente la visita a Coiba no se limita a sus encantos marinos. Su bosque primario y ese denso y verde dosel, hogar de unas 36 especies de mamíferos, 147 de aves y unas 39 de anfibios y reptiles, se puede recorrer por alguno de sus senderos. Ya sea en bote o en kayak, nadando, buceando o caminando, Coiba es un tesoro salvaje lleno de joyas por descubrir.

Your visit to Coiba, however, is not limited to its marine charms. Its primary forest and dense, green canopy are home to some 36 species of mammals, 147 bird species, and some 39 species of amphibians and reptiles, which can be spotted along any of its trails. Whether by boat or kayak, swimming, diving, or walking, Coiba is a wild treasure full of jewels just waiting to be discovered.

Para evitar que el auge turístico deteriorara estos frágiles ecosistemas y tener un control sobre las actividades, fueron designadas áreas específicas de buceo y snorkel. Algunas de ellas se marcaron inicialmente con boyas, para facilitar el amarre de los botes, evitando el anclaje y los daños que esto genera. Gracias a una alianza entre NatGeo, la fundación MarViva y los operadores locales de buceo, se instalaron recientemente más boyas de amarre en doce sitios de buceo, totalizando 22 sitios marcados en el noreste del parque. Tener un gran número de boyas permite disminuir la presión de los turistas en un sitio en particular, distribuyéndolos en más lugares.

Desde Santa Catalina, comunidad costera con hospedaje y servicios turísticos, a dos horas de la ciudad de Santiago. El recorrido, de 51 kilómetros, dura una hora y quince minutos en bote.

A 30-mile boat ride from Santa Catalina, a coastal community with lodging and tourist services two hours from the city of Santiago takes about 1.15 hours.

Desde Puerto Mutis, a media hora de Santiago, comunidad portuaria a unos cien kilómetros de la isla. El recorrido se realiza por impresionantes bosques de manglar (dos horas y media).

You can also approach from Puerto Mutis, half an hour from Santiago, a port community about 60 miles from the island. This route takes you through impressive mangrove forests and lasts about 2.5 hours.

Desde Pixvae, el punto en tierra firme más cercano a los sitios de buceo, a dos horas de Santiago, se realiza un recorrido con bellos paisajes, pero es necesaria una camioneta 4 x 4.

Pixvae is another option. It is the closest mainland location to diving sites and about two hours from Santiago. This route travels through beautiful landscapes but requires a 4x4 vehicle.

n Fernando de Noronha la vida es una verdadera delicia. A diferencia de otros destinos de playa que ofrecen resorts atestados de gente, en este archipiélago de Pernambuco, Brasil, se practica un turismo de baja densidad respetuoso con el medio ambiente. La razón es sencilla: se trata de un importante santuario ecológico del planeta que ha alcanzado fama mundial por la belleza de sus playas, por lo cual atrae gran cantidad de turistas cada año. Y sabiendo la joya que tienen entre manos, los lugareños están explotando su recurso natural de forma controlada para afectar lo menos posible el bello entorno que los rodea. Afortunadamente, porque se trata de un lugar muy hermoso.

n Fernando de Noronha life is a true delight. Unlike other beach destinations that offer crowded resorts, the low-density tourism in this archipelago in Pernambuco, Brazil is respectful of the environment.

The reason is simple: this ecological sanctuary of great importance to the planet has achieved world fame for the beauty of its beaches, attracting large numbers of tourists every year.

Conscious of the jewel they hold in their hands, the locals control the way their natural resources are exploited, minimizing damage to the beauty all around them. This is fortunate, because the place is gorgeous.

Su historia es también fascinante.

El archipiélago lleva el nombre del hidalgo lusitano que financió la expedición de Américo Vespucio: primer europeo que desembarcó en las islas, en 1503. Desde entonces fue asediada por los franceses e ingleses, hasta que en 1629 pasó a manos holandesas durante 25 años y luego fue recuperada por Portugal en 1654. Casi doscientos años después, el famoso científico inglés Charles Darwin pasó por allí para hacer una escala antes de llegar a Galápagos, dentro de su legendaria expedición a bordo del bergantín HMS Beagle. También fue un centro penal, primero para reos comunes y después para presos políticos. Luego se transformó en territorio federal durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, para establecer una base militar que tuvo gran presencia de soldados estadounidenses. Y hace apenas treinta años fue reintegrado al estado de Pernambuco, cuando comenzó su nueva vida como centro recreativo.

It also has a fascinating history. The archipelago bears the name of the Lusitanian nobleman who financed the expedition of Amerigo Vespucci, the first European to land on the islands in 1503. Following this discovery, the archipelago was besieged by the French and English and then passed into Dutch hands in 1629, where it stayed for the next 25 years until Portugal recovered the islands in 1654. Almost two hundred years later, the famous English scientist Charles Darwin stopped here en route to the Galapagos on his legendary expedition aboard the HMS Beagle. The archipelago also served as a penal colony, first for common criminals and then for political prisoners. Later, as a federal territory during the Second World War, it was used as a military base and maintained a large presence of American soldiers. And just thirty years ago it was returned to the state of Pernambuco and began its new life as a center for recreation.

A praia mais bonita do mundo Cuentan en el pueblo que cuando Vespucio desembarcó exclamó “¡el paraíso es aquí!”. Y aunque la leyenda parezca exagerada, creo que no lo es. El paisaje natural de Fernando de Noronha es deslumbrante. El archipiélago tiene 26 kilómetros cuadrados y está formado por 21 islas, de las cuales solo una está habitada.

Fue declarado Parque Nacional Marino por el gobierno brasileño y Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco.

Sus hermosas playas cristalinas de cálidas aguas son motivo de orgullo en todo Pernambuco, pero hay una en particular de la que todos se ufanan.

Su nombre es Baía do Sancho, pero en la isla principal es más conocida como “A praia mais bonita do mundo”. Así no más, como si no hubiese otra igual. Y es que, en efecto, ha sido seleccionada tres veces como la Playa más bonita del mundo en la clasificación anual de la página web TripAdvisor.

A praia mais bonita do mundo People in the village say that when Vespucci disembarked he exclaimed, “Paradise is here!” And although this may seem like an exaggeration, I believe it’s true. The natural landscape of Fernando de Noronha is dazzling. Of the 21 islands in the ten-squaremile archipelago, only one is inhabited. The archipelago was declared a National Marine Park by the Brazilian government and it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its beautiful crystalline beaches, kissed by warm waters, are a source of pride throughout Pernambuco, but there is one in particular that everyone raves about. Its name is Baía do Sancho, but on the main island it is better known as “A praia mais bonita do mundo” (“The World’s Most Beautiful Beach”). Just like that, as if there were no other like it. Indeed, Baía do Sancho has been named the most beautiful beach in the world three times in the TripAdvisor website’s annual rankings.

Dado que es un tesoro escondido, no es sencillo llegar a ella. Primero hay que registrarse en la entrada de acceso, ya que se trata de un área protegida. Allí hay un centro de información turística y una tienda de souvenirs y productos varios. Si no trae consigo agua, comida y protector solar, es indispensable aprovechar el sitio para abastecerse; ya que pasado este punto no hay otro sitio donde hacerlo. Eso sí, no lleve muchas cosas.

Desde allí es preciso caminar entre la vegetación por un sendero que conduce hasta el mirador. Y luego se desciende por el acantilado a través de unas cuevas donde han instalado largas y empinadas escaleras.

As a hidden treasure, it’s not easy to reach. Being a protected area, you must first register at the access entrance where you’ll also find a tourist information center and a souvenir shop with various products. If you come without water, food, or sunscreen, you’ll need to purchase supplies at this shop since there is nowhere to do it past this point. And, of course, you won’t want to carry many things.

From there, you’ll walk through the greenery along a path leading to a lookout point. Finally, you’ll descend a cliff through several caves where long, steep stairs have been installed.

espués de todo este ajetreo, se conquista el paraíso. El mar es delicioso, la arena suave y el paisaje insuperable. Las aves vuelan sin que nadie las perturbe, los cangrejos corren libres por la arena, y en la apacible tarde que se ausentaba llegué a jurar que la felicidad podría ser eterna. No sé si Baía do Sancho es la playa más bonita del mundo, pero su increíble belleza me basta para creer el título que ostenta. Vale la pena conocerla para comprender por qué es uno de los destinos ecoturísticos más codiciados del mundo.

Ya que se encuentra en ese sector de la isla, le recomiendo retomar el sendero que conduce a Baía do Sancho y seguir unos metros hasta llegar al próximo mirador, desde donde se puede observar la Baia dos Porcos: una playa llena de peces de muchos colores, que se distingue por sus piscinas naturales color turquesa que se forman entre las piedras, custodiada por el imponente Morro dois Irmãos. La vista, además de ser una de las postales más famosas del archipiélago, es un verdadero espectáculo de la naturaleza.

Como en todo buen paraíso, en Noronha (como le dicen familiarmente) se come muy bien. Entre las muchas opciones que componen la oferta gastronómica, decidí apostarle a los sabores locales. Y de todos los restaurantes que visité, hubo dos que me sorprendieron. El almuerzo en Mergulhão es una excelente oportunidad para degustar las exquisiteces de la cocina brasileña contemporánea.

ut at the end of all this effort you will have conquered paradise. The sea is delicious, the sand soft, and the landscape unsurpassed. Birds fly by undisturbed, crabs run free along the sand, and on the quiet afternoon when I was there, I felt that happiness could be eternal.

I have no idea whether Baía do Sancho is actually the most beautiful beach in the world, but its incredible beauty made a believer out of me. It’s worth a visit to see for yourself why it’s one of the most coveted ecotourism destinations in the world.

And while you’re on that part of the island, I recommend you continue along the path that leads to Baía do Sancho until you reach the next viewpoint, where you’ll get a view of Baia dos Porcos: a bay filled with multicolored fish, known for the natural pools of turquoise water that form between the rocks, guarded by the imposing Morro Dois Irmãos. This view, besides being the image featured on one of the archipelago’s most famous postcards, is one of nature’s true spectacles.

Elevated Gastronomy As in any paradise, in Noronha (as it is known familiarly) one eats very well. From among the many options, I decided to check out the local flavors. Of all the restaurants I visited, there were two that surprised me. Lunch at Mergulhão provided an excellent opportunity to taste the delicacies of contemporary Brazilian cuisine.

’ve spent more than 10 years studying world-class leaders like Kamath to determine what sets them apart from typical leaders. One big surprise is the extent to which these star managers emphasize ongoing, one-on-one tutoring. Cognitive psychologists, teachers, and educational consultants have long recognized the value of such personalized instruction: It fosters not just competence but mastery of skills, and independence. However, it’s unusual to see this type of teaching employed in a business context. Indeed, I’ve found that most leaders fall back on traditional employee management practices, such as giving formal reviews and help with navigating internal politics.

In 2012, he relocated his entire staff to London to create a pop-up establishment. A few years later, the team members went to Tokyo for two months. The goal, Redzepi explained, was “to learn by exploring a different place and meeting new people.”

• Questions: Star leaders also teach by asking sharp, relevant questions, often in the course of furthering their own learning. According to a colleague at HCA, Frist “was always asking probing questions to find out what was happening.” He did it to “educate himself, not to make you feel like you were doing something appropriate or inappropriate. It was an educational venture.”

• Modeling: Another powerful teaching tactic deployed by executives I studied was the simplest: leading by example. One of Frist’s direct reports told me that he learned how “to be a lot more adventurous” just by being around Frist, who was “incredibly creative in how the company was built and put together.” Sometimes, just seeing the right example in front of you is all it takes to pick up new behaviors.

When you embrace the role of teacher, you build loyalty, turbocharge team development, and drive business performance. Teaching is not merely an extra for good managers; it’s a responsibility. From April 5 to 11, the seventh annual International Film Festival of Panama will screen 74 movies from 51 countries from around the world. With so many options, how should you choose which ones to see? Here are some of our recommendations.

Cuando el astronauta Buzz Aldrin descendió detrás de Neil Armstrong y pisó la Luna, el 20 de julio de 1969, levantó la cabeza y describió a la Tierra como “una joya brillando en el cielo; una joya de azul profundo y verde aceituna”.

Sin embargo, hoy el planeta luce enrarecido por el cambio climático: un fenómeno que afecta a todos los países y a todas las personas en todos los continentes. Cambios que vivimos en nuestra piel a causa de la alteración del clima, el aumento del nivel del mar, la creciente contaminación y la degradación de los suelos y los mares. El desastre ambiental ha aumentado el número de migrantes de 173 a 244 millones en quince años.

When astronaut Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the moon behind Neil Armstrong on July 20, 1969, he described Earth as “a brilliant jewel shining in the sky; a jewel of deep blue and olive green.” However, today the planet bears signs of the strain of climate change, a phenomenon that affects every country and every person on every continent. Climate change creates effects that include problems with our skin, rising sea levels, increasing pollution, and the degradation of the soil and the oceans.

The environmental disasters caused by climate change have also increased the number of migrants from 173 million to 244 million in fifteen years.

Esta realidad impulsó a los gobernantes, empresarios, sociedad civil y pueblos del orbe a establecer los 17 Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) como un compromiso para transformar nuestro mundo antes de 2030, los cuales fueron coordinados en 2015 por las Naciones Unidas y aprobados en asamblea general por todos los países miembros. Entre estos destacan cuatro grandes objetivos ambientales: producción y consumo responsable, acción por el clima, vida submarina y de ecosistemas terrestres.

This reality has compelled leaders, businessmen, civil society, and people of the world to come together in 2015 to establish the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a commitment to transforming our world before the year 2030. These goals were coordinated by the United Nations and approved in the UN general assembly by all the member countries. Among these 17 goals, four major environmental goals stand out: responsible production and consumption, climate action, underwater life, and terrestrial ecosystems.

¿Por qué consumir y producir sosteniblemente, respetando el ambiente?

Porque las estadísticas indican que cada día somos más y, por ende, consumimos más. Si no actuamos para cambiar la producción y nuestros hábitos de consumo, causaremos daños irreversibles al planeta. Cuántas cosas compramos solamente porque están en oferta o son moda, sin pensar en el impacto ambiental de su producción. Por ejemplo, según datos de Naciones Unidas, cada año 1.300 millones de toneladas de alimentos (por valor de un billón de dólares) son arrojados a la basura por los consumidores y mayoristas o se deterioran en bodegas debido a malas prácticas de recolección, almacenamiento y transporte.

¿Cuáles son las metas para el 2030?

Reducir los desechos, reciclar y reutilizar. Reducir a la mitad el desperdicio de alimentos y disminuir significativamente el consumo de productos y energías fósiles. Por ejemplo, desde 2012 Francia genera más del 90% de su electricidad a partir de fuentes con cero emisiones de carbón, pues además de la energía nuclear, utiliza hidroeléctrica, eólica y otras alternativas verdes. ¿Por qué adoptar medidas urgentes para combatir el cambio climático?

Porque el cambio climático impacta negativamente no solo la economía, sino también la vida de todas las personas y las comunidades en todos los países. Según António Guterres, secretario general de Naciones Unidas, “el cambio climático representa el desafío más determinante de la época en que vivimos, pero tenemos aliados importantes para combatirlo: la ciencia y la tecnología. Hay que continuar con la acción climática, pese a los escépticos”.

What can I do as a consumer to improve the environment?

As a producer, the idea is to create net profits by reducing environmental impacts and pollution and promoting more recycling, better competitiveness and a better quality of life for consumers and workers.

What are the goals for 2030?

También los océanos se han calentado. La cantidad de hielo y nieve ha disminuido, con una pérdida irreparable de 1.07 millones de kilómetros cuadrados por década. Entre 1901 y 2010, el nivel del mar subió 19 centímetros y se estima que en 2065 habrá subido de 24 a 30 centímetros más, lo cual provocará la inundación de ciudades costeras y otros desastres naturales. Las emisiones mundiales de dióxido de carbono (CO2) han aumentado un 50% desde 1990, y desde 2000 hasta 2010 se incrementaron más que en las tres décadas anteriores. ¿Cuáles son los compromisos para el 2030?

Todos los gobiernos se han comprometido a incorporar acciones tendientes a mitigar el cambio climático entre las políticas y estrategias de los planes de desarrollo nacional y local. Una de las prioridades es disminuir las emisiones de CO2. Además, los países desarrollados que conforman la Convención Marco de Naciones Unidas sobre Cambio Climático planean invertir 100.000 millones de dólares anuales en 2020 para atender las situaciones relacionadas con el cambio climático y poner en pleno funcionamiento el Fondo Verde para el Clima. Es fundamental mejorar la educación, la sensibilización y la capacidad de respuesta frente a este fenómeno que afecta la vida y la economía de todas las personas y todos los países.

he greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity have increased. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) showed that the global average temperature increased by about 1.4 °F (.85 °C) between 1880 and 2012. Scientists warn that the production of cereals is reduced by 5% for each degree that the temperature increases; in fact, due to the warmer climate, from 1981 to 2002 forty million tons of corn, wheat, and other crops were lost.

The oceans have also gotten warmer.

Marine ice and snow have decreased, with an irreparable loss of 1.07 million square kilometers per decade. Between 1901 and 2010, the sea level rose 19 centimeters and it is estimated that, by 2065, it will rise 24 to 30 centimeters more, leading to the flooding of coastal cities and other natural disasters. Global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) have increased by 50% since 1990, and from 2000 to 2010 they increased more than in the three previous decades.

What are the commitments for 2030?

Each government has committed to incorporating climate change mitigation into their national and local development policies and strategies.

One of the priorities is to reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, the developed countries that make up the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change plan to invest 100 billion dollars annually until 2020 to address situations related to climate change and make the Green Climate Fund fully operational. It is essential that we improve education, awareness, and the ability to respond to this phenomenon that affects every person and every community in the world.

¿Por qué conservar y utilizar sosteniblemente los océanos, los mares y los recursos marinos?

Porque los océanos proporcionan recursos como alimentos, medicinas y biocombustibles. El medio marino es la morada de una asombrosa variedad de criaturas, que va desde organismos unicelulares hasta la ballena azul (el animal más grande del planeta). También es el hábitat de los arrecifes de corales, uno de los ecosistemas con mayor diversidad genética del orbe. Los ecosistemas costeros actúan como barreras de amortiguación para reducir los daños causados por tormentas y mareas altas. Las costas son el escenario para actividades recreativas y turísticas, y además ayudan a mejorar la salud de las personas. Sus aguas han sido vitales para el comercio y el transporte mundial. Por eso la gestión ambiental de este recurso es esencial para el futuro sostenible de la vida.

En el último siglo han desaparecido más de 120 especies de animales; el 8% de las especies animales conocidas se han extinguido y el 22% están en peligro de extinción.

Hoy la sobrepesca y la contaminación marina están poniendo en peligro la vida de los océanos.

Se ha destruido el 20% de los arrecifes coralinos, un 24% adicional corre peligro inminente de desaparición por presiones humanas y un 26% está en amenaza de desaparecer a más largo plazo.

Los elevados niveles de acidez que hoy tienen los océanos pueden generar un debilitamiento de los esqueletos y caparazones de muchas especies marinas, según indican estudios científicos.

La proporción de poblaciones de peces marinos que se mantienen en niveles biológicamente sostenibles ha disminuido drásticamente en todo el mundo por la sobrepesca. La mala gestión marina ocasiona un impacto económico que supera los 200.000 millones de dólares al año, según estimaciones del Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente y, si no se adoptan medidas de mitigación, el cambio climático aumentará el costo de los daños a los océanos en otros 322.000 millones de dólares anuales en 2050. Para colmo, se estima que más de ocho millones de toneladas de desechos plásticos se vierten cada año al mar y lo más preocupante es que esta cifra va en aumento.

Why conserve oceans, seas, and marine resources?

Because the oceans provide resources such as food, medicine, and biofuel. The marine environment is home to an amazing variety of creatures, ranging from unicellular organisms to the blue whale (the largest animal in the world). It is also the habitat of coral reefs, one of the ecosystems with the greatest genetic diversity in the world.

Coastal ecosystems act as barriers to reduce the damages caused by storms and tides. The coasts are the setting for recreational and tourist activities, as well, and they also help to improve people’s health.

These waters have always been vital for trade and transportation worldwide. This is why management of this resource is essential for the future sustainability of life.

Today, overfishing and marine pollution are endangering the life of the oceans.

Twenty percent of coral reefs have been destroyed, an additional 24% are in imminent danger of disappearing due to human pressures, and 26% are in danger of disappearing in the longer term. Today’s higher levels of ocean acidity can cause a weakening of the skeletons and shells of many marine species, according to scientific studies. The proportion of marine fish that remain at biologically sustainable levels has declined drastically worldwide due to overfishing. Poor marine management causes an economic impact of more than 200 billion dollars per year, according to estimates from the United Nations Environment Program. If mitigation measures are not adopted, climate change will increase the cost of the damages to the oceans by another 322 billion dollars annually by 2050. To make matters worse, it is estimated that more than eight million tons of plastic waste are dumped into the ocean each year, and even more worrying is that this amount is increasing.

In the last century, more than 120 animal species have disappeared; eight percent of known animal species have become extinct and 22% are in danger of extinction.

¿Qué podemos hacer?

Para empezar, debemos eliminar en lo posible el uso del plástico, organizar y participar en actividades de limpieza de playas, elegir productos con certificado de buenas prácticas marinas y, para conservar la diversidad biológica, exigir que los gobiernos establezcan sistemas de zonas protegidas bien gestionadas.

To begin with, we should eliminate as much as possible the use of plastic, organize and participate in beach cleanup activities, select certified sustainable marine products, and demand that governments establish well-managed systems for protected areas to conserve biological diversity.

¿Cuáles son los compromisos?

De aquí al 2020 se deben gestionar y proteger sosteniblemente los ecosistemas marinos para restablecer la salud productiva de los océanos, reglamentar eficazmente la explotación pesquera, poner fin a la pesca excesiva, la pesca ilegal, las prácticas destructivas, la pesca no declarada y no reglamentada; aplicar planes de gestión con fundamento científico, para restablecer las poblaciones de peces en el plazo más breve posible; conservar y proteger al menos el 10% de las zonas costeras y marinas, y prohibir los subsidios y subvenciones que contribuyan a cualquier tipo de pesca irregular.

What are the commitments?

By 2020, marine ecosystems should be managed and protected sustainably to restore the health of the oceans.

Fishing should be effectively regulated and excessive, illegal, destructive, and unregulated fishing should be stopped.

We should implement scientificallybased management plans to restore fish as soon as possible and at least 10% of coastal and marine areas should be conserved and protected.

Subsidies and financial support that contribute to any type of irregular fishing should be prohibited.

Why protect the life of terrestrial ecosystems?

Because only 30% of the planet’s surface is made up of land with diverse ecosystems and these are the places that we humans live. This is where we find the water we drink, the food we eat, and the air we breathe. ata from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) indicate that more than 13 million hectares of forest disappear each year and land degradation causes the desertification of 3.6 billion hectares each year, affecting the lives and economies of millions of communities fighting against poverty. The effects of desertification directly impact 250 million people, while several billion live in areas of risk, spread over more than a hundred countries.

Eight percent of known animal species have become extinct and 22% are in danger of extinction. In the last hundred years, more than 120 species of animals have disappeared, including the Persian tiger, the blue pike, and the Madeiran large white butterfly (declared extinct in 1970). Other lost species include the Javan tiger and the Madagascan Dwarf Hippopotamus (1976), the Zanzibar leopard (1996), the black rhinoceros (1997), the Javan rhinoceros 2011), the Pinta giant tortoise (2012), and the Formosan clouded leopard (2013). Today, 4,898 species of animals are at critical risk of extinction.

Growing pains in passenger and cargo land transportation can hinder development, but a new public works project hopes to address these challenges.

ras casi dos años de concluir la vital expansión de su vía interoceánica, Panamá se apresta a iniciar otra gran obra pública que, aunque en primera instancia apunta a resolver graves problemas de comunicación vial, es igual de importante para la consolidación de su plataforma logística: el cuarto puente sobre el Canal de Panamá. En proceso de evaluación de las obras y con varios consorcios interesados en construirlo, sus obras deben comenzar antes de que culmine la actual administración presidencial.

Se trata, en resumen, de un vínculo vial de siete kilómetros de longitud entre los accesos a cada lado del proyecto, treinta kilómetros viales por construir y siete kilómetros por rehabilitar repartidos entre la estructura principal y 24 puentes de conexión.

early two years after completion of the vital Canal expansion, Panama is launching another giant public works project. Largely intended to solve serious transportation problems, this project, a fourth bridge over the Panama Canal, is equally essential to strengthening the country’s logistics platform. The project is at the assessment stage —several consortiums have shown interest in taking on the construction— and work should begin during this presidential administration. The project comprises a road connection measuring 4.3 miles from entrance to entrance, 18.6 miles of new roads, and updates and repairs to 4.3 miles of road between the main structure and 24 connecting bridges.

El tramo principal del puente tendrá un ancho de 51 metros: suficiente para incluir ocho carriles vehiculares: tres en un sentido, tres en el otro y dos de sentido intercambiable de acuerdo al flujo en horas pico; 24 puentes tributarios que conectan al puente principal con la malla vial en ambos lados; además de los dos carriles de circulación de la línea 3 del metro del área metropolitana. Lógicamente, ambas obras se construirán al tiempo, lo que supondrá un presupuesto combinado de 4.000 millones de dólares y un tiempo de construcción de 42 meses; nada desdeñable si se compara con los 5.500 millones de dólares y los extenuantes 81 meses de trabajo que demandó la ampliación del Canal sobre la cual cruzará el puente.

The bridge’s main section will be 167 feet wide, accommodating eight vehicle lanes: three for traffic in one direction, three for traffic in the opposite direction, and two lanes that can change direction depending on peak-hour traffic flows. There will also be 24 feeder bridges that connect the main bridge to the road network on both sides, in addition to two lanes for line 3 of the metropolitan area metro.

It makes sense for both the main bridge and the feeder bridges to be built at the same time; a combined budget of 4 billion dollars has been allocated and it is estimated that construction will take 42 months. This is quite reasonable in comparison with the 5.5 billion dollars and exhausting 81 months of work required by the Canal extension, which will now be spanned by this new bridge.

“Se trata de un puente complejo, atirantado y con intercambiadores muy grandes a ambos lados. Del lado este está el intercambiador de Albrook, que conecta con el aeropuerto, la terminal de transportes y el centro comercial del mismo nombre, así como con el Corredor Norte, la Avenida de la Amistad y la Avenida Omar Torrijos. Esta última será ampliada desde la zona de Corozal hasta el Puente Centenario, que solo atiende el 40% de su aforo potencial por falta de buena conectividad”, explica Rogelio Arosemena, ministro panameño de Obras Públicas. “Del lado oeste”, continúa el funcionario, “se conecta con la Carretera Panamericana, las comunidades de Veracruz, Arraiján, Burunga y el área económica de Panamá-Pacífico (Howard)”.

“This is a complex, cable-stayed bridge with many very large interchanges on both sides. On the eastern side is the Albrook interchange, which connects to the airport, the transport terminal, and the eponymous mall, as well as with the North Corridor, Avenida de la Amistad, and Avenida Omar Torrijos. This latter will be widened from the Corozal area to the Centennial Bridge, which serves just 40% of its capacity owing to poor connectivity,” explains Rogelio Arosemena, Panama’s Minister of Public Works. “On the west side,” he continues, “it connects with the Pan-American Highway, the communities of Veracruz, Arraiján, and Burunga, and the Panama-Pacific (Howard) Economic Area.”

The new bridge will also be a tourist attraction for the city. The west side will feature a road that leads exclusively to the parking lots. From the foot of the tower, elevators will carry visitors up to a restaurant-bar under the bridge’s cable-stayed portion, where they can enjoy a panoramic view of ships sailing through the Canal’s south entrance; the elevators will continue on to the top of the tower, which will boast a lookout point.

Una ciudad fragmentada

A Fragmented City

Cualquiera podría preguntarse por qué el país canalero necesita un cuarto vínculo sobre la vía interoceánica, más aun considerando el presupuesto estimado para erigirlo.

Para entenderlo habría que revisar la historia del país y saber que la creación del Canal de Panamá impuso a la región central del país nuevos patrones de expansión urbana. La evolución concéntrica normal de una urbe fue detenida al norte de la capital panameña por la extinta “Zona del Canal”, territorio que el gobierno estadounidense se reservó para la seguridad y el mantenimiento de la vía, desviándose entonces, por un lado, a lo largo del litoral y hacia el noreste.

People might reasonably wonder why this Canal nation needs a fourth connection over the Inter-Oceanic route, especially considering how much it will cost to build.

A look at the country’s history helps answer this question. The construction of the Panama Canal imposed new patterns of urban expansion on the country’s central region. The concentric development normal to a city was halted to the north of the Panamanian capital by the former “Canal Zone,” land the U.S. government claimed to safeguard and maintain the Canal, thus diverting development to the coast and toward the northeast.

A partir de 1962, cuando fue inaugurado el Puente de las Américas, comenzó a crecer una mancha urbana del lado occidental de la Zona del Canal, alimentada por la nueva facilidad de trabajar en la ciudad capital sin vivir en ella. Tal crecimiento no ha parado jamás y el flujo vehicular que soporta el ya venerable y cincuentenario puente ha generado un embotellamiento permanente, que solo parece remitir algunas horas al día. En 2017 se calculaba la población del sector en medio millón, y si agregamos a toda la población del país de aquel lado y que necesita venir a la capital, la cifra aumenta a 1.7 millones. El Puente Centenario, más al norte, fue inaugurado en agosto de 2004, pero, como ya se dijo, no alivia mucho el aforo del de Las Américas por falta de conectividad adecuada, mientras el de Gatún —que se construye en la costa caribeña del istmo y debe ser inaugurado a finales de este año— no influye para nada en la dinámica vehicular del litoral Pacífico.

When the Bridge of the Americas opened in 1962, the city began to spread across the west side of the Canal Zone, since it was now easier to work in the capital without residing there. This growth has continued and the flow of cars served by the aging, 50-year-old bridge has created a permanent bottleneck that seems to ease for only a few hours a day. In 2017, the area’s population was estimated at half a million, and if we add the number of people who travel to the capital from outside the city, the figure rises to 1.7 million. Farther north, there is the Centennial Bridge, which opened in August 2004, but as previously noted, it does not really ease the crush on the Bridge of the Americas owing to the dearth of usable connections. The Gatún Bridge —built on the Caribbean side of the Isthmus and scheduled to open at the end of this year— has no effect on vehicle traffic on the Pacific coast.

Toward a Definitive Solution

Tal como pasó con su antecesor original, sería probable que el crecimiento poblacional sobrepasara la capacidad del nuevo puente para agilizar la comunicación entre ambas márgenes de la zona metropolitana de Panamá, pero las autoridades confían en un factor que impediría o retrasaría esto: la línea 3 del metro de la ciudad. “Entre más carreteras haces, más carros compra la gente. Dedicarse solo a hacer calles en una ciudad ya congestionada no funciona. En Panamá ya tenemos la línea 1 del metro y estamos construyendo la línea 2. Con la línea 3 cruzando el puente, esperamos que las personas que viven al oeste puedan dejar el carro en su casa, venir en metro hasta la estación de Albrook y enlazar con otras líneas del sistema”, explica el ministro Arosemena.

It is likely that population growth will eventually exceed the new bridge’s capacity to ease traffic woes within the limits of the Panama City metropolitan area, but authorities are confident that another factor will prevent or delay this fate: Line 3 of the Metro. “The more highways you build, the more cars people buy. Just building streets in a congested city doesn’t work. Metro Line 1 is already functioning in Panama City and we’re building Line 2.

With Line 3 crossing the bridge, we hope that people living on the west side will leave their cars at home, take the Metro to Albrook Station, and connect with other lines in the system,” explains Minister Arosemena.

or supuesto, las expectativas del ministro y del gobierno panameño, en general, tienen su base. Se calcula que la red completa del metro en la Ciudad de Panamá estará lista entre 2035 y 2040, con ocho líneas y la capacidad de atender el 50% del transporte urbano.

Con solo una línea en funcionamiento, el sistema ya ha movido más de 212 millones de pasajeros en poco menos de cinco años. Además, las apuestas suben con el interés de estudiar la construcción de un ferrocarril entre la capital y las provincias occidentales del país, anunciado por los gobiernos panameño y chino, poco después del restablecimiento de sus relaciones diplomáticas.

he Minister and the Panamanian government have good reason to be optimistic. It is estimated that Panama City’s complete 8-line Metro network will be ready between 2035 and 2040, with the capacity to handle 50% of the city’s urban transport needs.

With only one working line, the system has already transported 212 million passengers in less than 5 years. Things look even better when we consider the possible construction of a rail line between the capital and the country’s western provinces, announced by the Panamanian and Chinese governments shortly after the renewal of diplomatic relations.

El componente logístico

The Logistics Component

La plataforma logística del país, concentrada alrededor de la vía interoceánica, será la otra gran beneficiada cuando la nueva obra entre en funcionamiento. Tradicionalmente, las facilidades de dicha industria estuvieron agrupadas al este de la vía, pero en 2007 esto comenzó a cambiar con la inauguración de Panamá-Pacífico, una zona de uso mixto en la antigua base militar estadounidense de Howard.

The country’s logistics platform, concentrated around the Canal, will likewise benefit from the new works.

Traditionally, the sector’s facilities were grouped on the eastern side of the Canal, but this began to change in 2007 with the opening of the Panama-Pacific Economic Area, a mixed use zone on the old U.S. Howard military base.

Además, en el transcurso de la ampliación de la vía, la Autoridad del Canal de Panamá anunció estudios para diversificar su estructura de negocios e incluir otros servicios. Se identificaron nueve proyectos potenciales, tres de los cuales (una terminal ro-ro, otra de gas natural licuado y un parque logístico) estarían ubicados al occidente de la vía. Para rematar, cerca y del mismo lado, en la zona de Vacamonte, se están estableciendo facilidades logísticas y se estudia la posibilidad de reconvertir su antiguo puerto camaronero en uno de contenedores.

During the Canal expansion, the Panama Canal Authority began conducting studies on diversifying its business model and including other services.

Nine potential projects were identified, three of which (a roll-on/roll-off terminal, a natural liquid gas terminal, and a logistics park) would be connected to the western side of the Canal. Nearby, on the same side —in the Vacamonte area— yet more logistics facilities are being set up, and the feasibility of converting the old shrimp port into a container port is being studied.

a fiebre de inversiones logísticas en el sector oeste avalan un objetivo largamente perseguido por el país: convertirse en el puerto por antonomasia de las exportaciones e importaciones centroamericanas. Para Jorge García, expresidente de la Cámara Panameña de Comercio, Industrias y Agricultura, y empresario logístico, la posibilidad es un ganar-ganar, ya que “las tarifas de Panamá son mucho más baratas que las de Centroamérica, porque las rutas de los grandes barcos mercantes ya pasan por aquí, pero muchos no atracan porque el mercado es muy chico como para que el trasiego de carga sea rentable”. Para lograr esto, Panamá trabaja en una ley que reorganiza las aduanas panameñas y que propone una apertura fronteriza con Costa Rica para el paso de carga. “Esto ya existe en el triángulo norte de Centroamérica, y las fronteras entre Nicaragua, Guatemala y Honduras son muy abiertas y eficientes”, puntualiza García.

he explosion of logistics investments in the western sector supports the city’s long-held goal of becoming the port par excellence for Central American imports and exports. Jorge García, logistics entrepreneur and former president of the Panamanian Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture sees this as a win-win scenario, since “Panamanian rates are much lower than those in Central America; large merchant ships already pass through here, but many do not drop anchor because the market is too small to make cargo transfer profitable.” To change this, Panama is considering a law that will reorganize Panamanian customs and proposes an agreement with Costa Rica to allow cargo to cross the border. “Such an arrangement already exists in the northern triangle of Central America, and the borders between Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras are very open and efficient,” notes García.

These efforts point to a substantial increase in land cargo traffic, which will help pay for the bridge and the supporting roads. In addition to the works already mentioned, there are plans to expand the Pan-American Highway to 8 lanes between the Bridge of the Americas and Arraiján, along with a further expansion to 6 lanes between La Chorrera and San Carlos. n el Parque Central de Granada se respira la vida. No son solo sus árboles de mango y malinches, ni la “música” de esa preciosa Fuente del Amor, ni el cielo limpio de verano o la brisa loca que agita alegrías: es que allí, en el centro de esta ciudad turística nicaragüense, todavía queda espacio para el limpiabotas y la vendedora de dulces, para la muchacha que lee sentada en cualquier banca, para el refresco de la tarde, la conversación o el descanso. Granada, aunque es destino turístico, es una ciudad habitada por gente que ríe, llora y grita, capaz de mostrar no solo la belleza del lago Cocibolca, sino el caos tremendo de su calle central y el mercado público.

ranada’s Central Park radiates life. It’s not just the mango and flame trees, the music of the gorgeous Love Fountain, the clear summer sky, or the spirited breeze that instills good cheer; it is the feeling that here, in the center of this touristy Nicaraguan city, there is room for shoe-shine men, candy sellers, girls reading on benches, and afternoon refreshment, conversation, and relaxation. Granada may be a tourist attraction, but it is also a city inhabited by people who laugh, cry, and scream. The city easily wears both the beauty of Lake Cocibolca and the immense chaos of the central avenue and public market.

El Parque Central —llamado en realidad Parque Colón, aunque ese nombre poco se utiliza— está rodeado, como cualquier plaza colonial de herencia española, por varios edificios monumentales.

Está la Catedral, por ejemplo, destruida (y vuelta a construir varias veces) por las guerras e incendios sufridos en la ciudad.

Están el Palacio Municipal y el Palacio de la Cultura, antiguo Club Social. La Casa Hotel La Gran Francia, valiosa porque fue reconstruida según el modelo original, que data de inicios del siglo XIX. Y también el Palacio Episcopal, construido en 1903, con los aires arquitectónicos de Nueva Orleans.

Like any Spanish-style Colonial Era plaza, Central Park —actually, Colón Park, but the name is little used— is bordered by monumental buildings. There is the Cathedral, for example, which was destroyed (and rebuilt several times) by wars and fires. There is City Hall, the Palace of Culture, and the former Social Club. Hotel La Gran Francia is interesting because it was rebuilt as a copy of the original early 19th century building. And there is the Episcopal Palace, constructed in 1903 in the New Orleans style.

En el Museo Convento de San Francisco (calle Cervantes) hay una carta escrita al emperador Carlos V que se refiere a Nicaragua así: “Es la tierra muy poblada y abundosa. os patios interiores de las casas de Granada son, en sí mismos, un recorrido turístico.

Diminutos y apretados en las viviendas más pequeñas; señoriales y pomposos en las más elegantes, los patios de Granada tienen luz, jardines y fuentes.

Además del Parque Central, la calle La Calzada y el malecón, hay otros dos sitios que se deben visitar: el Museo Convento San Francisco y la torre de la Iglesia de la Merced. La Iglesia San Francisco es la más antigua de Nicaragua, y el edificio del convento, adjunto, alberga el Museo de San Francisco, con varias salas de exhibición. Allí, por ejemplo, se entera una de que los muebles de mimbre son tradicionales en Granada, así como el trabajo tejido y el bordado.

he inner courtyards of Granada’s houses are a tourist attraction in themselves. Small and confined in modest homes and majestic and expansive in more elegant residences, the courtyards of Granada are filled with light, gardens, and fountains.

Aside from Central Park, La Calzada Street, and the promenade, two other must-sees are the San Francisco Convent Museum and the Merced Church tower. The San Francisco Church is the oldest in Nicaragua, and the appended convent building houses the San Francisco Museum and its multiple exhibit halls. For example, there you might learn that rattan furniture is traditional in Granada, as are weaving and embroidery.

Granada welcomes the renowned International Poetry Festival every February, and the Food and Folklore Festival comes to town every March.

ay un espacio dedicado a la arquitectura, a las costumbres y el folclor, a la pintura primitivista y al arte popular religioso, con una colección de imágenes de vírgenes y cristos tallados en madera, en su mayoría de los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII. La colección más importante del museo es la de ídolos precolombinos hechos en basalto negro, descubiertos en 1849 en la isla Zapatera. El museo también tiene un patio interno poblado de palmeras gigantescas, visitadas con frecuencia por bandadas de pericos. La entrada al museo cuesta cinco dólares.

here are spaces dedicated to architecture, customs and folklore, primitive painting, and popular religious art, the latter featuring a collection of Virgin Marys and Christs carved in wood, most from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The black basalt pre-Colombian idols, discovered on Zapatera Island in 1849, constitute the Museum’s most important collection. The Museum also has an inner courtyard dotted with giant palm trees that are often visited by flocks of parrots.

l atractivo de la Iglesia de la Merced, por su parte, es su mirador. Después de superar unos cuantos escalones estrechísimos de la escalera de caracol, se alcanza finalmente el campanario de esta iglesia construida originalmente con madera y paja en 1539, para desde allí disfrutar las vistas panorámicas de la ciudad, incluyendo la torre de la Catedral y el volcán Mombacho. El costo para acceder al campanario es apenas un dólar.

Más allá de los “sitios que hay que conocer”, tal vez lo más fascinante de Granada —y de todas las ciudades y pueblos del mundo— es tener la oportunidad de recorrer sus calles.

he Merced Church is known for its lookout point. The narrow steps of the spiral stairway lead to the bell tower of this church, which was originally built of wood and straw in 1539. From the top, a panoramic view of the city includes the Cathedral tower and the Mombacho Volcano. It costs just a dollar to climb the bell tower.

Beyond the “must-sees,” perhaps the most fascinating thing to do in Granada —as in all the cities and towns around the world— is to explore the streets.

Las de Granada son estrechas y adoquinadas, con aceras accidentadas por las distintas alturas de las fachadas de las viviendas. Desviándose a la calle El Caimito, paralela a La Calzada, se encuentra una con espacios más alejados del radar turístico y, por lo mismo, más reales. En una ventana, este letrero: “Se vende leña”; en otra: “Queso y cuajadita”.

Granada’s streets are narrow and cobbled, with sidewalks marked by façades of varying heights. A stroll toward El Caimito St., parallel to La Calzada, reveals places far off the tourist track, and thus more authentic. One window features the sign: “Firewood for sale,” and another “Cheese and curd cheese.”

esa hora de la madrugada, cerca de las tres, la roñosa calle San Pablo desaparecía hacia adelante, rumbo al centro, como enterrándose en la noche, más lúgubre que oscura, sin que el amarillo pálido del alumbrado pusiera en la soledad de las sombras otra cosa que vahos de sordidez. Al pie de cada farol había montículos de basura y, detrás, fachadas deprimentes, de viejas construcciones pobres que ahora estaban además ruinosas, mostrando vanamente su fealdad. Los pasos de los dos amigos resonaban con algo de eco mientras avanzaban por el medio de la acera, conversando en voz baja, manos en los bolsillos, mirándose los zapatos o mirando el tenue viso gris metálico que adquiría el pavimento en la distancia, como si estuviera mojado.

t that early hour —around three in the morning— the down-atthe-heels street of San Pablo dissolved toward downtown, seemingly plunging into the night, more somber than usual, while the pallid yellow street light succeeded only in adding a gloss of sleaze to the shadows. Each lamppost stood amid mounds of trash and threw its glare backward onto the depressing façades of aged, shabby buildings now running to ruin and pointlessly exhibiting their ugliness. The footfalls of the two friends echoed as they walked down the middle of the sidewalk, conversing in soft voices, hands in their pockets, eyes fixed on their shoes or on the faint, metal-gray film that gave a watery sheen to the distant pavement.

Llevaban más de siete cuadras caminadas, desde el tugurio clandestino en el que habían estado tomándose unos tragos, y les faltarían aún otras veinte para llegar al centro, donde hallarían locomoción hacia sus casas. El taxi que pensaron encontrar era una esperanza que aumentaba en ellos con el paso de los minutos, pues debería estar cada vez más cerca, aunque seguían sin divisar algún vehículo y tampoco alguna persona; lo que no era del todo sorprendente, ya que estaba en vigencia el toque de queda hasta las seis de la mañana. Pero ellos habían andado antes en la calle a horas prohibidas y nunca habían dejado de ver un transeúnte apresurado, un auto veloz, incluso una patrulla de militares. Ahora, nada.

Era invierno pero no llovía ni hacía demasiado frío. Eso sí, algo extraño flotaba en el aire, y quizá solo fuera la aproximación de un temporal, o el inmaculado silencio. Coincidieron en preguntarse si no habían cometido un error al abandonar el tugurio a esa hora, en vez de quedarse “de toque a toque” como los demás, y rieron en sordina al darse cuenta de que esa duda revelaba inquietud, o incluso miedo. ¿Miedo a la noche, tan densa? En realidad no tenían mucho que temer: que los detuviera una patrulla y no se contentara con pedirles la identificación, o que un par de maleantes apareciera de las sombras y los asaltaran... Pero no tuvieron alternativa, se habían visto prácticamente obligados a abandonar el tugurio después de soportar todas las provocaciones que pudieron por parte de un grupo de matoncitos respetables.

They had walked for more than seven blocks, from the hole-in-the-wall where they had been drinking, and they needed to walk another twenty blocks to get downtown to catch some transportation home. Every minute raised their expectations of spotting a taxi, since every minute should have brought them closer, but they still didn’t see any vehicles or even any people, which was not so surprising, considering that curfew was in place until six in the morning. But they had previously walked through the streets during the proscribed hours and they had always seen a pedestrian in a hurry, a speeding car, or even soldiers on patrol.

Now, nothing.

It was winter, but it was not raining or too cold. Actually, there was something strange in the air; perhaps it was only an approaching storm or the perfect silence. They were both wondering whether it had been a mistake to leave the hole-in-the-wall at that hour, instead of waiting out the curfew like the others, and they laughed softly as they realized that such a question revealed anxiety, even fear. Fear of the impenetrable night? There really wasn’t much to fear: maybe being stopped by a patrol that wanted more than ID, or being attacked by a couple of hoodlums springing out of the shadows. But they had no choice, they had essentially been forced to leave the hole-in-the-wall after being hassled by a bunch of thugs.

or el letrero de la siguiente esquina supieron que iban pasando frente a la calle Gómez Carreño, perpendicular hacia el sur, no menos oscura y desolada. Aparte de la propia San Pablo y de alguna otra calle ancha, que les permitían ubicarse, desconocían el barrio y les decían bien poco los letreros con los nombres de las calles menores.

Media cuadra más adelante vieron que por el lado derecho, hacia el norte, se abría un callejón, o pasaje; el correspondiente letrero indicaba “Vía Astra” y debajo alguien había escrito “¡Dirección obligada!”, lo que resultaba gracioso. Ambos amigos vieron al mismo tiempo el taxi que estaba detenido una docena de metros adentro en el callejón, su inequívoco letrero de “libre” encendido tras el parabrisas; se miraron con incredulidad, pero no vacilaron en acercarse, como diciéndose “nada perdemos”. Pronto distinguieron al chofer, dormido tras el volante. La mortecina luz de un farol parpadeó, al tiempo que ellos sentían algo engañoso en la distancia caminada, como si el auto estuviese mucho más allá de lo que parecía.

he sign on the next corner told them they were near Gómez Carreño Street, which ran crosswise to the south, no less dark and deserted. Aside from San Pablo itself and another broad street that told them where they were, they were not familiar with the neighborhood and the names of the smaller streets didn’t help. Half a block ahead, they noticed that, to the north —on the right side— there was an entrance to an alley or passageway with a sign saying “Vía Astra,” under which someone had scribbled “One Way!” which struck them as funny. The two friends simultaneously spotted a taxi some fifty feet down the alley, the “free” sign adamantly lit behind the windshield; they looked at each other skeptically, but they approached without any qualms, as if thinking “We have nothing to lose.” The driver, asleep behind the wheel, came into view. The lackluster street light flickered as they realized there was something odd about the distance they had covered, as if the car was much farther away than it seemed.

El chofer se desperezó cuando venían ya cerca de él: les clavó la mirada y respondió con expresión de pavor la sonrisa que intentaron dirigirle. Uno de los dos amigos levantó la mano, en el gesto de requerir el taxi, pero el horrorizado chofer encendía ya el motor y pasaba frente a ellos abrazado al volante, acelerador a fondo, sin mirarlos. Llegó a la esquina de San Pablo, giró hacia el centro en un solo resoplido angustioso y se alejó a gran velocidad.

Los amigos se miraron llenos de pasmo: “Lo asustamos”, murmuró uno; “fue como si hubiera visto un fantasma”, agregó el otro. Desconcertados por la inexplicable reacción del taxista, solo les quedaba salir cuanto antes del callejón, que ahora, sin el taxi, era escenario digno de Allan Poe. La distancia que los separaba de San Pablo de nuevo les pareció alargarse: estuvieron a punto de echar a correr, presas del pánico.

The driver stirred when they came close: he stared at them and responded to their would-be smiles with a look of terror. One of the two friends raised his hand as if to flag down the taxi, but the terrified driver started the car and drove past them, hugging the steering wheel and flooring the gas without looking at them. He reached the corner of San Pablo, turned toward downtown in one distressed zoom and took off at high speed.

The two friends looked at each other in surprise: “We scared him,” murmured one; “It was like he had seen a ghost,” added the other. Disconcerted by the taxi driver’s inexplicable reaction, the only thing they could do was get out of the alleyway as quickly as possible; with the taxi gone, it was now a scene straight out of Edgar Allan Poe. The distance separating them from San Pablo seemed to grow longer again; they were ready to run, overtaken by panic.

na vez en la esquina respiraron hondo.

Pero apenas reemprendieron la marcha hacia el centro la calle les pareció diferente: ¿qué era aquello? ¿De qué se trataba? Sí, más angosta que San Pablo, tenía árboles, el pavimento estaba resquebrajado… ¡No era San Pablo! Algo imposible. ¡No era San Pablo! Aceleraron la marcha hasta la próxima esquina, donde el letrero, efectivamente, les indicó que se trataba de la calle Domingo Salvatierra. Ninguno de los dos había oído jamás de esa calle, ni de la que ahí se cruzaba, Ramón Jan de Ray. Sin entender cómo pudieron perderse, regresaron al callejón a comprobar si se habían equivocado al salir, tal vez el callejón tuviera dos salidas… Bien sabían que no era así, pero qué más hacer.

Reingresaron a la fantasmagórica Vía Astra y esta vez caminaron hasta su extremo norte, que tampoco daba a San Pablo: daba a la 4 de Abril, otra calle desconocida. A partir de ahí el viaje al centro se convirtió en un deambular frenético por una telaraña de calles y callejuelas herméticas y oscuras de las cuales no sabían cómo salir.

Parecía el mismo barrio, ¡pero dónde estaban las calles conocidas! Era como hallarse en un barrio equivalente, de otra ciudad.

hey breathed deeply once they reached the corner. They had barely begun walking toward downtown again when they noticed the street seemed different. What was it? What was happening? Yes, it was narrower than San Pablo, it had trees, the pavement was cracked...This was not San Pablo!

Impossible. This was not San Pablo! They walked faster to the next corner, where the sign informed them that this was Domingo Salvatierra Street. Neither one had ever heard of that street, nor of the cross street of Ramón Jan de Ray. Without understanding how they could have gotten lost, they returned to the alley to see whether they had taken the wrong exit. Perhaps the alley had two exits. They knew that it wasn’t true, but what else could they do?

They entered the spectral Vía Astra again and this time, they walked to the north end, which did not lead to San Pablo either: it came out on 4 de Abril, another unfamiliar street. The trip downtown now became a frenetic scramble through a tangle of dark, dead-end streets and alleys from which they could not escape. It looked like the same neighborhood, but where were the familiar streets? It was like being in a parallel neighborhood in another city.

Time seemed to have become as flexible as distance, and although the two friends’ watches showed four in the morning, they felt like they had been lost for hours. They didn’t dare knock on the doors of the still-sleeping houses, nor shout for help. They were exhausted. They realized they should calm down and they tried: they stopped, took deep breaths, and gazed up at the black sky. This lull birthed a solution: rest a while and wait for daybreak.

It couldn’t be long, even though time was misbehaving and turning minutes into quarter hours and vice versa. Sitting on the curb, propped up against a lamppost, their exhaustion won out over the nightmarish confusion, and they slept as if drugged.

El tiempo parecía transcurrir con una elasticidad similar a la de las distancias, y aunque los relojes de los amigos marcaban las cuatro de la mañana, a ellos les parecía que habían estado perdidos durante horas. No se atrevían a llamar a las puertas de casas sumidas en el sueño, ni a gritar pidiendo socorro, y ya se sentían exhaustos. Pensaron que debían calmarse, y lo intentaron, deteniéndose, respirando profundo, mirando hacia arriba el cielo negro.

De esa calma surgió la solución: descansar un rato, y esperar a que amaneciera. Ya no podía faltar demasiado, pese a la ondulación del tiempo, que hacía durar minutos como cuartos de hora, o a la inversa. Sentados en la cuneta, echados contra un farol, pudo más en ellos el cansancio que la confusión pesadillesca, y se durmieron como narcotizados.

ada supieron del mundo hasta que los despertaron golpecitos en los zapatos y voces que decían: “Joven, despierte.

Jóvenes…” Estaban en la esquina de San Pablo con Gómez Carreño, entre bolsas de basura, vómitos y porquerías, al pie de un farol cuya luz era aún más mortecina en ese momento por efecto de la primera claridad del alba. Dos carabineros los enfocaban con linternas y les hablaban para sacarlos de la modorra, mientras ellos empezaban a enderezarse mirando a todos lados. “Nos perdimos”, dijo uno, parándose y observando el letrero de la esquina, “nos perdimos en el pasaje Astra…”. El otro agregó: “En la Vía Astra, ese callejón aquí cerca…”. Los carabineros les aseguraron que en todo el barrio no

existía nada con semejante nombre, y ante la insistencia de los dos amigos se hicieron acompañar por ellos hacia donde decían que estaba el callejón, a media cuadra por la acera norte, pero ahí solo había la misma secuencia continua de fachadas deprimentes y ni la menor seña de algo parecido a un callejón.

hey were dead to the world until they were awakened by footsteps and voices saying: “Wake up, man. Guys...”

They were on the corner of San Pablo and Gómez Carreño, surrounded by bags of trash, vomit, and filth at the foot of a lamppost, the light of which was dimmed by the first glimmers of dawn. Two traffic cops flashed lights into their faces and tried to talk them awake; the two friends tried to get up while looking about. “We got lost,” said one, standing up and looking at the sign on the corner: “We got lost in the Astra passageway.” The other one added: “On Vía Astra, that alley near here.” The cops claimed that no such street had ever existed in the neighborhood.

Giving in to the two friends’ insistence, the police officers accompanied them to where the two said the alley was, half a block down the north side of the road. But they saw only the same sequence of depressing façades, and not the slightest sign of anything resembling an alley.

Salud a Bordo Personal Health

En Copa Airlines, deseamos llevarlo a su destino seguro y a tiempo. Además, queremos que tenga una experiencia positiva. Los viajes largos pueden ser muy excitantes pero también extenuantes.

Seguir estas instrucciones puede reducir el estrés, la fatiga y evitar los síntomas que se producen como consecuencia del cruce rápido de los husos horarios durante su viaje.

Consejos para un viaje saludable: • Duerma bien la noche anterior y descanse todo lo posible durante su vuelo.

• Mientras se encuentre de viaje, intente dormir la misma cantidad de horas que dormiría al estar en su casa. Tome siestas de 30 a 40 minutos.

• Tome mucha agua y/o jugo antes y durante el vuelo.

• Ingiera alimentos ligeros durante su vuelo.

• Evite bebidas con cafeína o alcohol.

• No permanezca en la misma posición por mucho tiempo; haga los ejercicios de estiramiento que se muestran a la derecha y camine cada vez que pueda.

• Vista ropa y zapatos cómodos.

Rotaciones de tobillo / Ankle Circles Levante sus pies y gire sus tobillos en círculos. Haga cinco círculos rotando cada uno de sus pies en el sentido de las agujas del reloj y en el sentido contrario del mismo.

Raise your feet off the floor and rotate your ankles in a circular motion. Make five clockwise circles and five counterclockwise circles with each foot.

Estiramiento de rodillas a pecho / Knee to Chest Stretch At Copa Airlines, we work hard to get you to your destination safely and on time. We also want to make your travel experience a positive one. Long-distance travel, exciting as it may be, can also be tiring.

Following these tips can reduce the stress and fatigue that may occur with long-distance travel and combat the jet lag that may result from crossing time zones on your journey.

Tips for Healthy Travel: • Get a good night’s sleep and rest as much as possible during your flight.

• Try to stick to your normal sleep schedule as much as possible during your trip. You may find it refreshing to take short, thirty to forty minute naps as you adjust to a new time zone.

• Drink plenty of water and/or juice before and during your flight.

• Eat light meals during your flight, and limit or avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol.

• Don’t stay in one position for too long; perform the simple stretches shown on the right, and take short walks when possible.

• Wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes.
