The accident occurred around 6:15 p.m. Sources tell the Azle News both men will recover from their injuries. Although the identities of the two men on board could not be confi rmed, a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) preliminary incident report indicates the aircraft was registered to Robert E. According to the same report, the blue bi-plane is a Starduster TOO SA300 built in 1975; its classifi cation is listed as “Experimental” and its category is “Amateur Built.” One of the two men on board, believed to be the pilot, was transported to a Fort Worth hospital by CareFlite air ambulance. West named Azle interim police chief BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN He is the ranking lieutenant within the Azle Police Department, and only one offi cer – Sgt. Bob Spohn – has served the citizens of Azle longer than Lt. Darrell West. Wednesday, June 4, he was named Interim Police Chief by City Manager Craig Lemin; West replaces Randy Reed who retired abruptly May 30. West grew up in Azle, graduating from AHS a year ahead of the rest of his class in 1976. He married an Azle girl, Debbie Nutt, in 1979, and the two raised three children together. Along the way, West began serving the public, something he’s done his entire adult life. He joined the Azle Volunteer Fire Department in 1981. While volunteering, he went to school to become certifi ed as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and then moved on to

BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN For 20 years, Todd Smith has worked within a one-block area on Boyd Road in Azle. He’s going to have to learn some new routes to get to work. Dr. Ray Lea, superintendent of the Azle Independent School District, announced that Smith has accepted the position of Director of Operations for the district. Smith replaces Skip McCambridge, who recently resigned the position to head to a similar one in Lake Worth ISD. “Todd Smith has been dedicated to Azle for a long time – in fact, he just received his 20-year service pin,” Lea said. “He has aspirations to advance, and he’s worked very hard to earn that advancement, so we decided to reassign him to this position. “I’d say he was the obvious choice,” Lea said. He added that Smith has already moved into an offi ce in the AISD administration building at 300 Roe Street. Lea said Smith will have “plenty to say grace over” as he takes on oversight of maintenance, transportation, policy, student services, construction and communications for the entire district. “Any change in jobs entails some on-the-job training, and I like to think I’m a good teacher,” Lea said. “We’re very excited about what Todd brings to the position – his years of experience give him some real strength.” On the subject of Smith’s oversight

of the construction of a new competition gym and Career and Technology Education center at Azle High School, Lea said a tremendous amount of input from career and technology teachers as well as coaches has been sought and received. “We’ve been diligent to listen to everything they’ve had to say. to be very proud of our facilities.” Smith grew up in Arlington and graduated from Martin High School before obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education from Tarleton State University in Stephenville. He came to Azle High School to teach agriculture – or just plain ag, as it’s commonly referred to – and did just that for seven years before becoming an assistant principal at the school. The transition from the classroom to assistant principal was pretty easy since there was no shortage of students, Smith says. Five years later, Smith says he was honored to become just the fi fth principal in the history of Walnut Creek Elementary school. “Since Walnut Creek opened in 1955, there have only been four other principals – Wendal E. Hoover, Ruby Mae Easley, Fred Weir, and Thomas Hicks,” Smith said. “I wondered how I could ever replace someone like Mr. Hicks – someone that nice and calming, soothing – but it was a smooth transition, and I hope this one will go that way, too.” The students were younger at Walnut Creek, but Smith says the eight years he spent there were the most fun. “The kids are what I’ll miss most,” Smith said. “We have great teachers, a great staff, great parents and an out-

He hired on at the Azle Police Department on Jan. 18, 1990. In those days, the department didn’t have corporals, but West attained the rank of sergeant in 1993. standing PTO. But I’ll miss that interaction with the kids more than anything.” Smith said he was the only male on the staff at Walnut Creek, and because of that, he experienced many opportunities to be a male role model for his students. He also said Walnut Creek was never a stepping stone for him. “My intention was always to stay there a long time – like the principals before me,” Smith said. “There were some tears when I announced I was leaving.” It was one of the two hardest things he ever faced as principal at Walnut Creek. The only thing harder, Smith said, was meeting with the close-knit Walnut Creek staff and faculty to tell them of the unexpected death of longtime teacher Kaye Prevette. He obtained his superintendent certificate two years ago after interning under Lea. Sentiment aside, Smith says

there’s just one word that sums up how he feels about the challenges ahead as Director of Operations for the AISD. “Excited. I’m just really excited, and still trying to get everything figured out,” Smith said. “Skip had a lot of things going on and I’m trying to get up to speed on all of them.” First and foremost are the construction projects that are about to begin as a result of the passage of a $20 million bond package. “We’ll be tearing down the church building on the property between Walnut Creek and Azle High School next week to provide parking space,” he said. “Right now, I’m on my way to meet with the architects for the gym and Career and Technology Center.” Smith and his wife, Shannon – a teacher at Azle Junior High School – have two sons. Zachary, 24, graduated from AHS in 2008 and lives in Amarillo with his wife. Kleg is 16 and will be a junior at AHS when school starts.

Azle resident on board a naval sub Cody N. Summers, from Azle, is currently aboard the USS Columbia – a submarine. A fourth-generation sailor, Summers boarded the nuclear-powered attack sub in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Recently, Summers was promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class where he serves on the 361 feet long, 33 feet wide ship. About his promotion, Summers said, “It is a lot more responsibility. People expect more; you have to step up your game.” Everyone aboard the Columbia, named after cities in Missouri, South

Carolina, and Illinois, is there voluntarily. Because of the stressful environment unique to submarines, personnel are accepted only after substantial training and observation, noted Jesse Dick, a naval spokesman. The sub badge of honor is a gold or silver dolphin to wear on uniforms. Summers is one of 130 sailors on the ship; they often travel underwater for months at a time. “I feel proud of where I’m at,” Summers said. “I feel like I am doing something meaningful for not only myself but my country.”

Boyd Road Wreck

Alicia Ann Allison, 17, and Brent D. Draper, 16, console one another after the vehicle they were in was struck by a maroon 1998 Ford F150 pickup in the 500 block of Boyd Road on June 4 around 8:45 p.m. According to the accident report, Russell Wayne Long, 39, of Pelican Bay, was driving the pickup north on FM 730 while talking on the phone and ran a red light, striking the black, 2013 Ford Fiesta piloted by Allison. She and Draper, her passenger, were westbound on Northwest Parkway at the time and had the green light. Neither Long nor his three child passengers was injured. Allison and Draper complained of minor injuries, but they were checked out by Azle first responders and refused transport to a hospital for further treatment. Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman

An Azle man was charged with driving while intoxicated, third or more, as well as for driving with no insurance and no driver’s license after the red 1999 Dodge Durango he was driving allegedly caused this accident at the intersection of Southeast Parkway and North Stewart Street about 4 p.m. Friday, June 6. Steven Kent Williams, 32, was arrested at the scene. The accident report says two pickups were stopped at the traffic signal when Williams’ pickup struck them while traveling at a high rate of speed. The report goes on to say Williams may have passed out at the wheel. Eugene Michael Maverick, 45, of Azle, was transported to Texas Health Azle with nonincapacitating injuries; David Dawson, 41, also of Azle, refused medical treatment and transport at the scene. 2013 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) The Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) is a regulation, passed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments, that requires all community water systems to provide their customers with an annual water quality report. With the CCR, communities benefit by acquiring a better understanding of their water suppliers and the processes involved, which allows them an opportunity to make an informed decision regarding their use of drinking water. The CCR is intended to provide important information about your drinking water and the efforts made by the City of Azle to provide safe drinking water. The report can be viewed on our website at http:// www.cityofazle.org/DocumentCenter/View/2843. A paper copy can be obtained at Azle City Hall or request a copy be mailed to you at no cost by calling 817-444-3751.

New Schedule for the Spay/Neuter Clinic azle manor has joined the duck revolution sweeping across the nation. The nursing and rehab’s own “duck crew” have residents “flock” to see them. It all started last year when a momma and daddy mallard visited the azle manor courtyard. This year when the mallards again visited, they brought a surprise, and momma mallard has been raising eight ducklings in the facility’s courtyard. duck Therapy has brought some residents who tended to stay in their rooms out into the courtyard to visit with others as they watch this sweet family. staff, employees and residents at azle manor are hopeful that momma and daddy mallard will return each year to bring joy to those who call the facility home. Senior Spotlight by darlene holmes The little rain we had over the weekend was great. Sounds like we may have a good chance of more happening in our area also. We sure could use some more! Folks have started bringing some things in for our garage or patio sale we’re trying to have now. Special thanks to the folks who have already had theirs and are bringing what’s left in to us. Every little bit helps. The agency provides us with whatever we need for the meal program, but we have to provide for whatever else we need in all areas we night need. We have to provide most of our office supplies – ink, toners, copy paper, markers, etc. Henry saves the day by picking up day-old bakery items

from Albertsons for us. We’ve had so many folks out with one thing or another health-wise lately. Some have moved to assisted living facilities or to Azle Manor. If you’ve not come by and checked us out yet, come on down to the B.J. Clark Community Center and get acquainted with the Lunch Bunch. We have yoga exercises in the Emanuel Building up on the hill at the entrance to Ash Creek Park every Monday and Wednesday. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we offer chair and yoga here and it’s a much bigger class. This wonderful program is through the local hospital – Texas Health Azle. We are also provided monthly a Nutrition Education talk with

specific subjects by the hospital’s registered dietician with good handouts that address the topics she speaks about. We offer a monthly free Food Bank and Produce Day program from the Tarrant Area Good Bank. Everyone receives free goodies and there is a qualification time frame to be sure you get yours. We have a monthly birthday and anniversary party complete with cake, cookies and ice cream after lunch. Hope and Johnny and their country music band comes to entertain us on those days. We will be honoring all our Dads this Friday, June 13. Come on down and pick up your June activities schedule and menu and get your share of fun, food and fellowship.

Azle Masonic Lodge

Ground-Breaking

Azle Masonic Lodge No. 601 presented its highest honor, the Golden Trowel Award, to Brandon C. Reese. The acknowledgement honors “hard work and dedication to masonry and the community.” At the ceremony were (l-r) Ray Stone, D.D. G.M. 89th District, Bill Lanier, Reese, Piper Pardue, Sawyer Pardue, and Linda Reese.

Food Pantry Collection

Seventh and eighth grade members of the Azle Junior High School Student Council collected more than 500 packages of Ramen noodles for the school’s annual Oodles of Noodles food drive to donate to the Inasmuch Food Pantry. Katelyn Brothers, student council president, said the school’s faculty, staff, and student body donated more than one package per person to reach that total.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held May 29 for Weatherford Rehabilitation Hospital, the first free-standing inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Weatherford. The 27,000 square foot, 26-bed facility, to be located at 703 Eureka Street, will offer patients a range of inpatient rehab services, such as physical, occupational, and respiratory therapy. The new facility will allow patients to stay closer to home to receive care. The hospital will be Joint Commission (JCAHO) accredited and is expected to open in the first quarter of 2015, employing about 120 people. Photo by Stephanie Cravotta

Wrestling and tennis camps next Two more camps are coming before a lengthy summer break arrives. Tennis and wrestling camps are set for June 16-19. Netters will learn on the Azle High School tennis courts while wrestling campers will assemble at the AHS workout room near Hornet Field. The tennis fee is $50 for incoming grades 4 through 9. It runs from 8 to 10 a.m. AHS coach Lisa Helm is the director. Two sessions of wrestling are slated. The first, for grades 1 through 5, runs from 8-10 a.m. The second session is for grades 6-9 and goes from 10 a.m. until noon. The fee for either is $40; AHS coach Chris Allen is the camp director for both. After those camps, none are scheduled for five weeks. The annual volleyball camp is July 21-23, and it will be divided into three age sessions. Girls hoops is set for July 2831 for a trio of sessions. An advanced volleyball camp is scheduled for July 31 and Aug. 1. Finally, a football camp for incoming grades 2-9 – two sessions – arrives Aug. 4-7. Campers can register online by visiting www.azleisd.net then navigating over to “Azle High School” then to the “Summer Camps” tab. Fees vary for each camp and some sessions. No. 1 with a Kleenex: I’ve got the mucus in me This is one of those columns that the Bride thinks is inappropriate and unnecessary and embarrassing. She’s likely right, so I’ll apologize in advance. he predicament was whether to blow my nose on this. There are times in our lives that are incredibly urgent, when something has to be done RIGHT NOW or else. Then when resolved, we’ve forgotten all about it. Like: when you really, really need a drink of water; earaches or toothaches; or when you absolutely MUST go to the bathroom immediately. (It likely means something, a psychologist would say, that my two earliest memories are about that latter instance. In the first, I was a boy – 8 – driving home up I-35 with my family from Lake Whitney back to Fort Worth. Lounging around the back of our station wagon, the eight Shasta

T

colas I had consumed earlier on the shore began to require an exit. But there was no way dad was going to stop. You were asked if you had to go to the bathroom before you left then it was a straight shot home. Miles later, however I situated myself, there was no relief. So, I told dad. (I knew a gas station or rest area was out of the question. Dad finally relented and just drove off onto the shoulder of the Interstate. I got out – protected by open doors – and sought solace. But, with 18-wheelers roaring by and knowing there was an impatient dad drumming his fingers on an unair-conditioned Plymouth steering wheel, I, uh, faltered. Unfulfilled, I climbed back into the back of the car and, somehow, managed to get back home. (The second instance – I’m sure you are all riveted by these tales – came when driving back from Colorado. A wise adult now, I thought I could make it from Dumas to Amarillo

without a restroom break. That became a 50-mile horror trip. While I temporarily got my mind off my woes as I passed the helium plant out there – what does happen ON YOUR when you wee in a helium MARK plant? – I soon Mark K. Campbell was having an I-35 flashback. And this time I was the adult! (So the first convenience store on the outskirts of Amarillo got a rapid visit from a wide-eyed gentleman with flip flops on the wrong feet who uttered a silent prayer of thanks that no one was using the facility when he bolted back there.) Anyway, many of us this time of

year come upon another instance when something must be remedied at this very moment, NOW! – we sinus sufferers. I can’t prove this but I believe in my almost 58 years that I have blown my nose more than any human on the planet. (My dad always had a handkerchief on him – if we were swimming, in his cut-off jeans, there’d be a drenched hankie hanging out of a pocket– but I can’t imagine ever using one because of the frequency of its use. Yuck!) What a mountain of Kleenex I have left behind; I’m not very green when it comes to my snout (well, on the outside of it, anyway). I awoke the other morning to the usual series of sneezes that evolved into a required nose blow. But the tissues were all gone. And the paper towel dealie was empty. There was toilet paper, of course, but that was way in the back room and I didn’t want to wake up the Bride. (I race to the sun room on the other end of the house

when sneezes are imminent; some accuse me of having a sneeze that’s a tad loud. [It is kinda funny in Target to watch people scream or drop things when I sneeze nearby them.]) By now, the nose situation was crucial. I had to blow NOW. And there, in the cupboard, was a possible answer: a napkin. However, I paused. It was a Chinet napkin. Man, those are for when company comes over. These are the really nice napkins; they’re borderline cloth. I paused, holding the thick, luxurious paper wonder that could solve my problem. Soon, nature made the decision. It was blow now or things were going to get really messy. So I blew...heaven! I don’t know if Chinet needs further rave reviews, but they can get one from me: “Better than a handkerchief!” Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and, while he waffled on publishing this, the title won him over (sorry Kiki Dee); also, this column set the new On Your Mark record for parenthetical length and that’s saying something.

Letter to the editor Neighborhood Watch goes too far? On Monday, June 9 about 10:30 a.m., we dropped off several large bags of aluminum cans for recycling at the Azle Animal Shelter on Park Drive. Leaving, we saw a new little children’s play area on the left, and I was interested in the street because I had worked on several houses on Dusk Avenue.

The adjoining property’s fence was similar to a fence I planned to build. Since I had my tape with me, I stepped over and measured the end panel for height and width. A neighbor across the street walked up and asked why we were there. He began chatting about how the playground had caused neighborhood problems. Then more neighbors came out – at least four or five by now, looking at us suspiciously. Then a police car drove up and another officer asked for my li-

cense, assuming there was a problem. After a little interrogation and lecturing – which an 80-year-old man does not appreciate – we were given back our license and were free to go. The neighbors were not friendly and didn’t seem to like the little park; they were accusative if you stopped there. We clearly felt taken advantage of and were treated like criminals in a town we have lived in all our lives and thought was friendly. Linda Wilson Azle

art of the story of the Westward movement of the 19th century that I love concerns the railroads. Those iron rails and steam engines made the migration to the West much faster than slow-moving wagons. Native Americans called the trains “plenty wagon no horse” as they witnessed the iron wheels invading their land. Unintended consequences of the rapid settlement westward that the railroads facilitated were more Indian troubles. Besides the transcontinental railroad, sometimes we notice less the spread of rails across individual states, east/west or north/south. Most were accomplished by private business interests and needed no federal treaties with the Indians to pave the way, nor any federal grants either. The story of one Florida railroad man illustrates the point. Henry Bradley Plant was born October 27, 1819 in Connecticut, but typhus fever killed his father when

Henry was only six. At age 18 he began working as a cabin boy for a New Haven steamship company. The shipping company carried a lot of express packages, and Plant worked his way up in the business. Later he got a job in New York City with Adams's Express Company. (Think of it as the UPS or FedEx of the 19th century.) In 1854 Plant and his wife moved to Augusta, Ga. because of a promotion to superintendent of the company's southern division. When the Civil War erupted in 1861, the northern company realized that the war would interfere with their southern business. Consequently, they sold it at a good price to Plant. He renamed it Southern Express Company and did a lot of business with the Confederacy. After the war he concentrated on the railroad network in the South and bought up some bankrupt lines. By 1881 he decided to build lines into Florida. The next year he created Plant Investment Company (PICO) to link or build new rail lines across the

state, making sure they were all standard gauge. He soon had a monopoly on rail service in Central and Western Florida. In the 1880s he also bought a line of steamboats. Perhaps his PAGES FROM early days as a WESTERN cabin boy inhim. HISTORY spired His ships J’Nell L. Pate operated all along the east coast of the U.S. and traveled up the western coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico and into Tampa Bay. In the late 1880s Tampa was a town of only a few hundred residents. Plant extended a rail line to Port Tampa and dug out the channel to make it available to the large steamships. By 1889 Tampa

had become a major transportation hub. Plant got the U.S. mail contract for a route around the tip of Florida to Key West and Havana, Cuba. His “The Plant System,” as he called it, became the most profitable transportation route in Florida in the 1880s and 1890s and connected Florida crop producers of citrus fruits, celery, lumber, fresh fish, etc. to Eastern markets as far north as Canada. Also, Florida tourism began to increase. The warm climate attracted many wealthy people who wanted to escape the cold, northern winters, so the ever astute Plant built eight luxury hotels in Western Florida. His masterpiece was the large, brick and concrete Tampa Bay Hotel that opened in 1891. Built like a Moorish palace, it had thirteen silver minarets, 511 rooms and cost $3 million. It attracted famous guests like Teddy Roosevelt, Sarah Bernhardt, Babe Ruth and Clara Barton. Roosevelt's Rough Riders left from there to sail to Cuba during the Spanish-American War. In 1933 the

hotel became the property of the city of Tampa and now houses a Plant Museum and the University of Tampa. Plant died in 1899 at the age of 80. Another entrepreneur, Henry Flagler, ten years younger than Plant, also started with nothing and accomplished the same railroad and hotel building and growth of tourism for the east coast of Florida as Plant did for the west. Flagler also did what people thought was impossible: He built a railroad and bridges from the Florida mainland across the keys and reached Key West on January 22, 1912, a project that took seven years and nine months to complete. Like Plant, he used his own money and the investments of friends. America has been blessed by hardworking and risk-taking entrepreneurs.

EPA air pollution plan sparks varied reactions

T

he Obama administration on June 2 publicized what it termed “the firstever plan to reduce carbon pollution from power plants.” The plan, a set of proposed actions to be administered by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, states that, “cutting carbon emissions will help prevent up to 6,500 premature deaths and 150,000 asthma attacks among children.” In a news release of his own, Gov. Rick Perry reacted, saying, “President Obama’s decision to impose drastic new restrictions on America’s energy industry is the most direct assault yet on the energy providers that employ thousands of Americans and fuel both our homes and our nation's economic growth.” The Obama administration further stated the plan would “reduce electricity bills by approximately 8 percent by increasing energy efficiency and reducing demand in the electricity system, while creating

tens of thousands of jobs across the country.” But Perry said the air Texans breathe today “is cleaner than it was in 2000, even as our population has grown by nearly 5.2 million people” and “statewide, from 2000 to 2012, nitrogen oxide levels from industrial sources were reduced by 62.5 percent and from 2000 to 2012 ozone levels were reduced by 23 percent, a 12 percent greater reduction than the national average.” However, the Obama administration pointed out that governors would have “flexibility to meet the proposed standards using the energy sources that work best for each state” and, “there’s no one-size-fits-all approach here.” Along with its plan to reduce carbon pollution from power plants, the White House posted a fact sheet for Texas and one for each of the other states. The Texas fact sheet includes details under such headings as: A Cleaner More Efficient Power Sector in Texas, Improving the Health of Texas Residents, and

My preference is that Congress would act, but we all know that’s not going to happen.” “Climate change is already here: the country's 12 hottest years on record have come in the last 15 years and Texas is in the midst of one of the worst droughts in recorded history,” Ellis continued. “If we want to leave our children and grandchildren a safe and healthy en-

vironment, we’ve got to limit carbon emissions — just like we’ve done with arsenic, mercury, and other pollutants,” Ellis added.

GlaxoSmithKline LLC. The agreement resolves a multistate investigation against the company for unlawfully promoting its asthma drug Advair and its antidepressant drugs Paxil and Wellbutrin. Under the settlement agreement, GlaxoSmithKline must pay the State of Texas a total of $6.2 million, Abbott said, pointing out that the drug maker violated state consumer protection law by misrepresenting the uses and qualities of the three named drugs. State and federal law generally prohibits pharmaceutical manufacturers from marketing their drugs for “off-label” uses that have not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Abbott said.

Republicans hold convention An estimated 7,000 people reportedly attended the 2014 state convention of the Republican Party of Texas, June 5-7, in Fort Worth. GOP candidates who won March primaries or primary runoffs on May 27 were confirmed as nominees. Delegates participated in a straw poll for the presidency in 2016: U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz drew 43 percent of the vote to Gov. Perry’s 11.7 percent. Among various topics drawing media attention were debates over immigration policy, optional “gay conversion therapy” counseling for homosexuals and Second Comptroller honors lawmaker State Comptroller Susan Amendment rights. Boat recoveries are on the rise

R

ecently, if your boat got stolen in Texas, it would likely not be recovered. But that is changing, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife. The Lone Star State once was in the bottom three in America in boat recovery rates compared to vehicle thefts. But a new TPW investigative unit comprised of nine wardens is changing that. In its first year of existence, the special team has recovered over 100 boats worth more than $800,000.

In addition, the squad has worked on more than 200 boat registration fraud cases. The nine wardens spend about 25 percent of their time on marine theft-related cases. The team has assisted other agencies with more than 390 cases. Many of the recovered boats were found in the first week after they were reported stolen. Before, many cases had gone years without success, noted Greg Williford, special operations captain. For information on stolen boats or registration fraud, contact 1-800-792-4263.

What doesn’t work It’s hard to tell if Edge of Tomorrow is pilfering from other movies or just borrowing. There’s a lot of The Matrix here and the creatures are Alienesque. Then there’s the plot that mimics (yeah, the Movie Man said it) Groundhog Day and the lesser-known Time Code. The fi rst 70 minutes or so of Edge of Tomorrow are so good that a letdown is inevitable. The manner in which Cruise/ Blunt’s team manages to fi nd and access the ultimate alien brain is stretching it. But that’s the beauty of sci-fi. Still, the Movie Man wasn’t crazy about the ending.

Next up The Movie Man is certainly headed for How to Train Your Dragon 2. The week should be a colossal one at the box offi ce. Now that the hipsters have seen Neighbors (MM #1087, 3), they will venture over to 22 Jump Street, another self-aware bromance which, the Movie Man admits, looks better than Neighbors (yes, that’s very faint praise).

Suspect sought in 10K electric scam by carla noah stutsman Public outcry over news of an 89-year-old Azle area woman being scammed out of almost $10,000 has been deafening. The story, posted to the Azle News Facebook page, had been shared more than 220 times at press time Tuesday. Danie Huffman, Public Information Officer for the Parker County Sheriff’s Office, said Monday her department has received a large number of comments and responses as a result of a press release posted to the Sheriff’s website and Facebook page, as well. Now, the Parker County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating a pair of suspects in connection with its investigation into the crime. Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said the main suspect identified himself to the victim as Gregory Long, and investigators believe Long could be using his real identity. Long posed as a worker from the victim’s electric company, stating he received a “sensor,” that there was a “short” in her wiring. After he entered her attic, Long told the victim squirrels had chewed through her wiring,

and it would costs $9,818.40, to repair the damage. Long was accompanied by an unidentified 20-year-old male who posed as his assistant. The suspects did not leave or display a work order, agreement or any form of paper work. A neighbor of the victim reported seeing the same suspects at her residence prior to arriving at the victim’s home. The neighbor said the suspects told her they were representatives from her electric company, performing work in the area and that her electric may be shut off briefly while they performed their work. The suspects stayed at the victim’s residence for about 45 minutes, according to Fowler. The victim wrote Long a check but contacted her electric company after Long left the residence. The electric company confirmed there was no such “sensor” or “short” and said they did not send a representative to her home. The victim then contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report the incident. Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene but were unable to locate any new work or wiring done on the victim’s residence. The victim contacted her bank in order to cancel the check, but Long had already cashed it.

Investigators discovered that Long used a Missouri driver’s license as identification to cash the check at the bank. They also learned Long is a suspect in other similar investigations. He is currently believed to be the suspect of a similar Callahan County Sheriff’s Office fraud case. Long also goes by the names of Danny and Jackson, but may use other aliases. He is described as being in his 40s, 6-feet tall, weighing about 180 pounds with dark blond or possibly strawberry hair. The suspects were reported to have been driving a white, 4-wheel-drive pickup with chrome equipment. Fowler believes the men have conducted similar schemes in the Metroplex. “I don’t know what goes through a criminal’s mind as they con unsuspecting people out of thousands of dollars,” Sheriff Fowler said. “We believe someone out there knows who these suspects are and where they are located.” Fowler cautioned the public against conducting any sort of business with people who approach them or are unsolicited, without proper identification and paperwork. “Before any work is done in or

Anyone with information of the identification or location of the suspects is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office immediately at (817) 594-8845. Or call Parker County Crime Stoppers Hotline at (817) 5995555 where you can remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers will pay up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest or indictment of the suspects involved.

Watch out for warranty deception when buying a used car Tarrant County is assisting the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) to stop title fraud in Texas, and county residents can help by learning how to protect themselves before

they buy a used vehicle. “Everyone who applies for a title in our office will have the vehicle information run through the National Motor Vehicle Title Information Sys-

tem,” said Ron Wright, Tarrant County tax assessor-collector. This system is similar to how law enforcement agencies consolidated their information into the national crime data-

base. The title database contains title records from DMVs across the nation, and the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) is using it to thwart would-be title washers from

getting clean titles on vehicles that should be branded salvage, rebuilt, or flooded. “People who used to find ways to scam the system by putting a clean Texas title on flooded, re-

built and salvage vehicles may be surprised to find that’s not going to be so easy in the Lone Star State anymore,” Wright said. PLEASE SEE usED, PAGE 3B.

You can go to Title Check for vehicles you might see on Internet auction sites or in classified ads.” A title history report shows where and what states the vehicle was titled in, previous odometer readings and whether it has a brand that could impact the vehicle’s safety and/ or value, such as salvage, junk, rebuilt, or flooded. TxDMV Executive Director Whitney Brewster noted licensed businesses that specialize in selling salvage and rebuilt vehicles tell consumers the condition of the vehicle up front. Title fraud happens when a dishonest seller preys on innocent buyers, convincing them to buy vehicles without disclosing the title issues. “Don’t let it happen to you or any of your family or friends,” Wright said, “especially not when a click of the mouse can take you to Title Check on the TxDMV website. For All Your Storm Related Needs! Non-pesticide termite treatment now available in Texas

Developed over years of Texas A&M testing, Polyguard Products, of Ennis, Texas introduces TERM Particle Barrier, the first and only Texas termite treatment not classified as a pesticide. EPA classifies the TERM Particle Barrier as a “device”. The concept is simple - quartz particles are carefully sorted and sized to an exact combination. Particles are too large for termites to move, and too small for them to crawl between. The particle barrier simply blocks entry, causing termites to forage elsewhere for food. TERM Particle Barrier can be installed by Polyguard authorized pest management professionals on the outside perimeter of existing or new homes and schools, as well as in bath traps and wherever plumbing penetrations come through the slab. No building should be built without this particle barrier, as it blocks most places where termites enter structures. TERM Particle Barrier should dramatically reduce the need for pesticides. EPA Establishment # 89537-TX-1 For more information, visit: www.ParticleBarrier.com Call Don Stetler (281.217.2965) or Polyguard (214.515.5000)

Home Maintenance Tip: Check for loose or leaky gutters. Improper drainage can lead to water in the basement or crawl space. Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear and free of debris.
