Park fun: Movie, summertime music Tribute bands of classic rock groups, blues, and country set for Central Park – and OZ, too BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN

In five short years, the vision of a few individuals has snowballed, becoming a popular summertime tradition in Azle – and it’s still growing. The Music in the Park Summer Concert Series started with a six-week run in June 2010, when five of the six featured performers were local folks. The free concerts – held outdoors on consecutive Friday evenings at Azle’s Central Park amphitheater – were so popular the city created the Special Events Advisory Board to facilitate the concert series. Year by year the event has grown and now features eight Friday night concerts featuring entertainment ranging from Gospel to country and from reg-

gae to pop to several rock-n-roll specialties. The 2015 Music in the Park lineup promises to be better than ever: June 5 The Heat, a five-piece variety band that really had Azle partying last summer. See www. theheat-band.com for more information about them. June 12 Tori Martin – who made Azle proud by earning a Golden Ticket to Hollywood on American Idol Season XIV – and her band will bring country tunes with an edge Martin’s web site is www. torimartinofficial.com.

Area Golf You’ll find a beautiful, challenging golf course in Azle. Cross Timbers GC attracts thousands of duffers annually. The course also hosts several local fundraising tournaments, too. The top notch 18-hole route celebrates its 20th year in 2015. Rolling fairways, Champion Bermuda greens, and a bevy of natural hazards have thrilled and thwarted golfers for two decades. Cross Timbers is the home course of former PGA Champions Tour player Robert Landers. Find Cross Timbers GC at 1181 South Stewart Street. Photo by Joshua Adams

Azle art festival will celebrate local talent BY NATALIE GENTRY The Azle Area Chamber of Commerce has a new event planned for 2015 – the Azle Main Street Art Festival and Tour. “We are very excited about the potential the event has,” said Randa Goode, the committee chair for the festival. “This year will be a small launch so we can figure out what works and what doesn’t and expand from there.” Goode noted she hopes the festival will touch every aspect of Azle, from the businesses to the schools to the town library and everything in between. “As we have spoken with more and more people about the event, it amazes me that there is so much artistic talent in this area,” she said. “We have singers and musicians, sculptors, glass work artists, photographers, painters, and on and on.” Goode explained that the theme of the festival is to show that when creativity and commerce meet, great things can happen. The Azle Main Street Art Festival and Tour will take place the first weekend in June inside 404 Main. The Chamber will host the ju-

ried art show. Interested artists may submit an application for up to three works for consideration for the show. Selected artwork will be displayed Friday through Sunday and be available for purchase. “The Chamber will also work to promote younger artists by allowing junior high and high school students in the Azle ISD, Azle Christian School, or Azle area home-schooled students to apply for consideration to be a part of the show,” Goode said. “Selected young artists’ work will also be available for sale with 22 percent going back to their school’s art programs or to benefit the Azle Library Children’s programs.” Goode noted that elementaryaged artwork will be displayed at the Azle Library but would not be available for sale. “Their artwork would be strictly for viewing purposes, but it would still help to encourage younger children to be creative and express themselves through art,” she said. An author’s corner will also be inside 404 Main, to provide an opportunity for festival goers to find a new favorite author.

AUTOMOTIVE & MOTORCYCLES 1304 NW Parkway (Hwy 199)

“The Chamber is looking for local authors who would like to participate,” Good said. “But just like the art show, authors will need to fill out the application for consideration.” The 404 Main parking lot will become a gathering place, with live music, face painters, and a few other activities. “We plan to work with businesses located on Main Street to include some type of art in their shops during the festival,” Goode said. “This will produce an atmosphere of creativity that stretches from one end of Main Street to the other. “They may display whatever type of art they feel is best suited for their business that weekend from painting or photography, to acoustic guitar players or live painting.” Businesses wishing to participate need to contact the chamber for further information. “I just feel that this is a great way to pull the entire community together to celebrate the creativity that is all around us,” Art of every kind is expected at the Azle Main Street Art Goode said. Star Bank: It’s a family BY NATALIE GENTRY Star Bank of Texas in Lake Worth is able to offer outstanding customer service because of their dedicated staff. One such devoted employee is Megan Baker. After she graduated from Azle High School in 2009, Baker worked in retail at the mall for about a year before beginning her career with Star Bank of Texas in March 2010. Hired as a teller, Baker found that being on the front lines of the banking world helped her to build relationships really get to know the customers. “People call and we know their voice without having to check caller ID,” Baker said. “We know our customers and they know us.” Baker soon became a teller supervisor and then transitioned to the loan department. And that’s where she found her niche. “I’ve found that I really like the working in the loan department,” she said. “Once a loan is booked, I image the file and help

simply ‘What’s my payment?’” she said. “In addition to helping customers, I learn new things here every day,” Baker said “I want to keep progressing and growing.” Baker also said the bank is like a second family now. “I’ve been here through every major milestone of my adult life: getting engaged, getting married, having a baby,” Baker said. “Everyone here has been with me through all of that and

it really makes it feel like a family.” She and her husband Cory – a 2007 AHS graduate – still live in Azle with their 1-year-old daughter, Addison. “I’m really blessed to work here with such awesome people.” Baker’s devotion to serving the needs of customers, employees, and the community is sincere and exemplary of Star Bank of Texas' purpose and culture of community.

Rollin’ with it Springtown’s American Bike Rally continues to draw more cyclists By Natalie Gentry This year will mark the 6th Annual All-American Bicycle Rally in Springtown. The rally was inspired by Dr. Robert Moss’s enthusiasm for healthy activities and his love of the area. “I wanted to expose as many people as possible to the great people and roads we have in the Springtown area as opposed to a lot of the other cycling rides in Dallas and Ft. Worth where traffic is a major concern,” Moss said. “I ride on these roads 2-3 days a week and they are wonderful with minimal traffic, smooth roads, and scenic views.” So, Moss took the idea to the Chamber. “I opened my mouth at a Chamber meeting one time about doing a bike rally as a fundraiser and to expose the area to cycling as a healthy outdoor sport,” he said. “They quickly put me in charge of the event and now we are on our sixth year.” Bumps in the road Moss noted that his familiarity with roads helped the initial planning progress fairly smoothly. “Since I ride the roads frequently, I knew they would be good for a rally,” he said. “The challenging part was setting up the appropriate rest stops and police intersection control at a few key points.” With routes encompassing 10, 28, 54, and 67 miles available, Moss coordinated with the Parker County Sheriff Department and local volunteer firefighters to help ensure the safety of the rider. This year the rally will also feature a short six-mile ride for families. With minimal elevation change, this route is designed to get kids and their parents out on bikes.

Gearing up Throughout the years the rally has grown from 70 riders initially to 200 last year. “This year we are expecting more riders as we have moved the ride up to the first weekend in June,” Moss said. “We did this to make sure we would have all of the volunteer support we need to pull off an event like this and also not compete with another large rally in the Dallas area, which is held on the second weekend in June.” Moss also commented on the volunteers who have stepped up to help. “Volunteers from all of the local churches will man the rest stops and we have some from area volunteer fire stations who will be posted along the routes.” he said. Moss noted that the Springtown Chamber is also work- ing on collaborations with the Weatherford Peach Pedal in July and the Granbury Blazin’ Saddles in August ride to make it a “trifecta” for the riders. “We are in the early stages of this, but if we can pull it off then the riders who participate in all three rallies would get a special gift,” he said. On the right route The overwhelming majority of rally reviews have been positive. “We consistently get great reviews from riders who comment on the beautiful routes, good roads, challenge of the course, ample parking, showers and bathrooms, friendly volunteers, and great barbecue sandwich from Woody Creek when the ride is finished,” Moss said. He noted that the support and gear (SAG) vehicles – trucks and motorcycles riding on the course to help riders who get into trouble – are often commented on and appreciated by riders, too.

Saginaw Dialysis Clinic giving patients with kidney failure a local option for their care According to the National Kidney Foundation 26 million Americans have kidney disease and 450,000 currently are on dialysis. Dialysis is a treatment used to keep the body balanced during end stage kidney failure. When the kidneys are functioning properly, they act as your body’s filter, helping your body keep the nutrients and fluids you need and remove the things you don’t need. Wise Regional Health System knows undergoing dialysis can be stressful and time consuming. Patients typically need three, fourhour treatments each week to keep their bodies balanced. Wise Regional strives to make the process as easy and convenient as possible. Wise Regional currently operates two dialysis clinics, one in Saginaw and one in Decatur, so local patients don’t have to travel all the way into the Metroplex for their treatment. Both Wise Regional clinics offer hemodialysis, a treatment that circulates the blood from the body through a machine with a special filter (artificial kidney), and then returns the blood to the body. This machine acts as the kidney should filtering waste and excess fluid from the blood. The Saginaw clinic, which is conveniently located off of Bailey Boswell Road, opened in 2014 and has all of the most advanced and best equipment, including the Fresenius line of dialysis machines. Fresenius is a global leader in dialysis services and products. They have developed a machine that offers ultra pure dialysis, providing near sterile conditions for treatment, significantly reducing the risk of infection. The machines also are synced with Wise Regional’s Electronic Medical Records system, giving clinicians immediate access to a patient’s complete medical history. Additionally, the clinics are equipped with the Crit-Line system, a technology that helps continuously monitor patients during dialysis to ensure accurate treatment and fewer side effects. Wise Regional also has a low staff-to-patient ratio, meaning patients receive personalized care from our specially trained nursing staff. A full-time nephrologist, a doctor specializing in the renal system, oversees all

of the Wise Regional dialysis patients to ensure continuity of care. Dr. Aamir Zuberi serves as the Clinic Medical Director and makes rounds in both clinics every week; whereas, many nephrologists make rounds only twice a month. Ensuring patient comfort is essential at the Wise Regional dialysis clinics. Each patient has access to cable television and wireless Internet during their treatment. They also have access to warming blankets and pillows. The Saginaw clinic offers a particularly cozy and home-like environment. The staff at Wise Regional’s Dialysis Clinics recognize that dialysis is a major time commitment, and work with patients to provide flexible scheduling, so they can continue to live their lives as normally as possible while undergoing treatment. For more information on the Wise Regional Dialysis clinics, visit www.wiseregional.com/Dialysis or call 817-768-1060 to reach the Saginaw location. The Decatur location can be reached at 940-6261700.

The professionals at Wise Regional Health System’s Dialysis Clinics in Saginaw and Decatur use state-of-theart equipment.

Clinical Care Pediatrics now offering specialized pediatric care to area Residents in Tarrant, Parker and Wise and surrounding counties now have a new option for pediatric care. Last October, Clinical Care Associates expanded its offerings, opening Clinical Care Pediatrics in Bridgeport. The practice specializes in providing high-quality care for our community’s youngest members from birth through adolescence. Clinical Care Pediatrics accepts most private insurance plans and Medicaid and CHIP. Dr. Ja’Near Anderson is the primary provider at the practice. Prior to joining Clinical Care Associates, Dr. Anderson worked as an attending physician for the Newborn Intensive Care Specialist Group in Dallas. Services at Clinical Care Pediatrics include annual wellchild visits, sick visits, asthma managements, developmental screenings, flu shots, immunizations, sports physicals, hearing screenings and non-emergency injuries.

The clinic also is in the process of implementing a pediatric nurse advice line for patients to have 24/7 access to a licensed practitioner. “We are excited to have Dr. Anderson join our team. As this region continues to grow it is essential that we establish a network of the best physicians to care our community. Dr. Anderson is a great asset to West Wise County and surrounding areas,” said Paul Aslin, COO of Clinical Care Associates. Dr. Anderson earned her medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. She completed a residency in pediatric medicine at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, Penn. She also completed a fellowship in neonatology at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. “The dreams of our children begin with a healthy start. I’m excited to contribute to the health and development of the community’s future, our chil-

dren,” said Dr. Anderson. Clinical Care Pediatrics is located at 2202 US Highway 380, Ste. 110. For more information on Clinical Care Pediatrics, visit www.clinicalcarepediatrics. com. To schedule an appointment, call 940-683-3014. Clinical Care Associates is a subsidiary of Wise Regional Health System, which currently 10 clinics in North Texas, with a total of 20 medical practitioners . Services include Women’s Health, Orthopedics, Pain Management, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Medical Oncology and primary care. In 2014 Clinical Care Associates saw more than 10,000 individual patients. Clinical Care Associates also operates a Community Health Clinic on the Wise Regional West Campus in Decatur. The clinic offers a sliding scale payment scale for patients without insurance or who are underinsured. The clinic also offers evening and weekend Clincial Care Pediatrics in Bridgeport offers care to the hours. youngest patients.

Wise Regional opens dedicated pediatric unit In late 2014, Wise Regional Health System completed renovations that allowed for the creation of a dedicated pediatric unit on the second floor of the main hospital in Decatur. The unit focuses exclusively on the care of children – from newborns through adolescents. The compassionate staff is committed to providing excellent family-centered care to patients and their families, close to home. Experienced, registered nurses, who specialize in pediatric care, staff the unit. Wise Regional’s pediatric hospitalist and local pediatricians work together to provide 24-hour coverage for the unit. The unit also is fully stocked with pediatric-friendly medical supplies; and a pediatric treatment room is available for procedures, such as IV starts. The pediatric nurses and pediatricians treat children with The professionals at Wise Regional Health System take loving care of the smallest a wide-range of conditions, including upper respiratory infecpatients.

tions, Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), broken bones, gastroenteritis, dehydration and jaundice. The nurses also are cross-training to care for babies in the adjacent Labor and Delivery Unit. The unit also offers a welcoming and family-friendly environment. Our four private patient suites offer sleeper sofas, so parents can stay with their child overnight. Books, movies, and Wi-Fi are available to entertain children during their stay. For the privacy and security of patients, the unit is only accessible through a locked entrance. Only patient and family-approved visitors will be allowed in the unit during visiting hours. “Having a space that is designed and equipped especially for children is an asset to the hospital and the community. Our goal is to keep children close to home and in a warm, nurturing environment,” said Gail Matthews, Director of the Labor and Delivery Unit.

Taking care of business BY MISTY SHAW If you’re new to the area or simply want to know more about local businesses, there’s a welcoming staff ready to assist you at the Springtown Area Chamber of Commerce. Meet Amy Walker, chamber director, and Administrative Assistant Michelle Deweese – their smiling faces greet local residents and newcomers alike at the Chamber’s office on the Square in Springtown. “Our mission statement is to promote business and community growth while enhancing the quality of life in our community,” Walker said. “When people call about a business, they feel like the chamber of commerce is the respectable place to find out if that’s a good business – we get a lot of phone calls from people needing services and (asking) where they can go eat, and we can direct them.” With a full calendar of area events to plan and coordinate, inquiries to answer, and chamber members to help, it seems there’s hardly a dull moment around here. “It stays pretty busy,” Walker said. “We try to keep up with everything that’s going on in town as best we can – schools, all the local churches – and we do our best to get that information out.” The Chamber currently has approximately 250 members, and “I think we had 29 new members just this year alone,” Walker said. “I should mention too our board,” Deweese added. “We have about 20 people on our board of directors, and they are awesome. They’re not just in it for their own needs – they really care about the whole community.” “They’re all local business owners,” Walker said of the Chamber board members, “and they’re very active in the community, helping with everything that we do – very supportive. I have to say, it’s the best board that I could even imagine.” The Chamber works with other area entities to fulfill the community growth portion of its mission statement. “We partner with the City of Springtown and Springtown ISD – we work really closely with both those entities, and that’s been very beneficial over the last

few years as we’ve worked on some of the projects that are on the Square, and some of the roads that have gone in,” Walker said. There are a number of benefits to being a Chamber member, and the staff works hard to make sure of that. “I think that we try really hard with the resources that we have to promote the businesses that are here in town and to help them be successful,” said Walker. “It’s very beneficial for somebody coming in to join the chamber because we are that connection, and we can get the word out, even if it’s just by talking about it. We do so many things to help promote our chamber members at a minimal cost to them.” Deweese said the Chamber’s online resources can be a major asset to members. “Members are listed in our online directory which is where most people find what they’re looking for,” she said. “That’s one of our biggest things, the online directory.” In addition to helping its members, the Chamber also works hard to benefit local residents by raising money for student scholarships and programs for senior

citizens, Deweese said. “We do our Senior Angel Tree, which is for senior citizens during Christmas,” she said, “and we also raise money for the SEF (Springtown Educational Foundation) through sponsorships for an annual senior citizens Christmas luncheon.” The Chamber also hosts the Vocational Student of the Month and provides lunch for the student and their teacher. “Once a month, we honor a Springtown High School student who is enrolled in a trade class and chosen by their teacher” for the honor, Walker said. In addition to the Chamber banquet held every year in March, there’s a busy schedule of upcoming community events the chamber hosts annually. “This will be our fourth annual Sporting Clay Shoot (in April) and the sixth annual All American Bicycle Rally (in June).” There’s also the New Teachers Luncheon coming up in August, the Wild West Festival & BBQ Cook-Off in September, and several holiday events in December. Center helps with unplanned pregnancies Eagle Mountain Pregnancy Help Center is God-based BY MARK K. CAMPBELL It’s a non-descript house that sits off of Highway 199 – at 10238 Jacksboro Highway, to be exact. Those inside offer hope and help for anyone dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Eagle Mountain Pregnancy Help Center was birthed in 1999 when some individuals in the area saw a need to help, Director Ednith Villalobos said. The non-profit Center is staunchly pro-life – abstinencebased – and a place where Godbased counseling and spirituality is the cornerstone. “Everything we do is centered around God” said Villalobos. Spiritual, emotional, and physical support are offered to anyone who walks through the door. The Center’s goal: “To educate people in the community about God’s great plan, abstinence until marriage.” Villalobos said that she and the trained volunteers at Eagle Mountain Pregnancy Help Center focus on more than just the mothers. Fathers come in, too, and other family members are also engaged. The Center relies on donations to survive. Aside from the costs of staying open – utilities, office supplies – personal items like maternity and baby supplies are needed for distribution to clients. Diapers and formula are especially always needed – for kids up to two years old. Villalobos said that diapers

– especially size 3 and 5 – are most requested. Formula, too, is highly-sought after. Gently used toys and items are fine donations, too. Everything is distributed free, and patients can get even more supplies by attending weekly Bible and parenting/life skills classes and earning “points.” Childcare is available during the classes. “We are not limited to what we accept,” the director said. “Our girls can use pretty much everything that comes in.” Villalobos initially came to the Center after a call from Ash Creek Baptist Church to work as a volunteer; the Center needed an interpreter. That was four years ago. Today, after a two-year stop as the assistant director, she is now the director. Neita Head serves as the assistant director. Villalobos said, “Because there are not pregnancy centers available as you get out of the cities, we reach out to everyone around us so they know that we’re here and they’ll send the girls over to us.” She added, “We’re not just a place that provides supplies. We also provide the spiritual needs and emotional needs as well.” Villalobos said the Center is family-oriented and that many women feel it is a safe haven for them. Among the services provided are free pregnancy tests, proof of pregnancy forms, and maternity home and adoption referrals. Volunteers are always needed,

Food pantries give cheerfully, happy to help by Natalie Gentry Local food banks and pantries are a great place to turn to not only for free food but other forms of support. Millions of individuals across the country and hundreds in the Azle and Springtown area struggle with feeding their families on a consistent basis. While some months most people are fine, there can be other periods of time due to an unexpected bill or reduction in income that can make it more challenging. Not only are these organizations a place to find help when it is needed, but they are also worthy charities for local philanthropists.

Minor Care clinic open at Texas Health Azle Facility offers same-day and weekend care for routine health needs Azle Minor Care is now open in its new location and ready to care for residents of Azle and surrounding communities. Located in the medical office building at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle, the clinic is designed to be an additional after-hours resource for patients to be treated for a variety of conditions that include: • sore throat • cough • congestion • ear aches • dental pain • minor lacerations • flu-like symptoms Clinicians are also qualified to perform school physicals. Staffed and operated by Texas Health Physicians Group, Azle Minor Care is open Friday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. No appointment is necessary. “Many patients have medical conditions that require immedi-

ate attention and yet are not severe enough for an emergency room visit,” said Valarie Gilbert, R.N., chief nursing officer at Texas Health Azle. “The clinic is a resource for convenient care when patients can’t get in or cannot wait for a scheduled appointment to see a primary care physician.” Previously, patients had to visit the emergency department at the hospital or travel to the Fort Worth area to be seen in a minor care clinic. Patients visiting Azle Minor Care will be seen by a physician assistant and nurse practitioner in one of four treatment rooms in a location closer to home, regardless of their ability to pay. After an assessment, these medical professionals are qualified to write simple prescriptions, administer antibiotic shots, stitch minor lacerations, test for influenza or perform other needed services.

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle’s Minor Care Clinic serves the area. If appropriate, patients can be transferred directly to the hospital’s emergency room. “Our goal is to complement the hours of local primary care physicians so that there is a resource in the community for people who have a minor care

need over the weekend,” said Bob Ellzey, FACHE, president of Texas Health Azle. “Making sure those needs are met, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay, is the top priority.” For more information about

Azle Minor Care, located on the campus of Texas Health Azle at 909 Southeast Parkway, Suite 101, call 817-334-6525. To learn more about health care options at Texas Health Azle, visit www.TexasHealth.org/Azle or call 1-877-THR-WELL.

There’s pure springtime joy every Easter when Azle’s Central Park is turned into an egg-hunters paradise. Over 15,000 eggs are “hidden” in the expansive greenery – with areas sectioned off for smaller collectors; all eggs are gone in around two minutes. Afterward, everyone can grab a free hot dog and drink and mill about, enjoying and inspecting their treats. Photo by Mark K. Campbell
