LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEW DECADE WITH AYRSHIRE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Already three months into the new decade and it seems to be moving more quickly than ever.

There has been a lot of change at Ayrshire Chamber in recent years and we are excited to see some of this work come to fruition in 2020.

Our member numbers are at an all time high and we are confident that this is at least partly due to our revised membership model which was launched in 2018. The feedback from members has been very positive and the results speak for themselves!

Future Chamber has also been a great success and is now entering its 3rd year with a new cohort of young members being supported by our Platinum Partners. We look forward to continuing this initiative over the coming years and seeing our Future Chamber members becoming full Chamber members and reaping the benefits of their membership throughout their business journeys.

Urquhart Opticians were announced as winners of the Business Excellence Ayrshire Award 2020 at the Ayrshire Chamber Annual Dinner at Trump Turnberry.

The winners impressed the judging panel with their commitment to continuous improvement and striving for excellence.

Lisa Stewart, Project Executive, Business Excellence Ayrshire said “I would like to congratulate the team at Urquhart Opticians on winning this prestigious award”.

“The judging panel were impressed with the very high standard of all of this year’s finalists. However, the 2020 Award produced an outstanding winner who demonstrated an exceptional level of excellence”.

BELL INGRAM CELEBRATES 120TH ANNIVERSARY Rural land and business specialists Bell Ingram are celebrating their 120th anniversary in style with a special reception to which Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce members are invited.

The Ayr office is led by Partner Geoff Brown, a RICS Chartered Surveyor and qualified Forester. His team includes Land Agents Amy Clark Kennedy, Matt Imrie and Gregor Dalziel, and Estate Agent Jillian McCulloch who all have a wealth of knowledge and expertise advising clients on a wide range of matters including estate agency, pipelines and utilities, forestry, rural land management, valuations, and microgeneration.

What began as a small firm of civil engineers, surveyors and valuators, established in 1899 by Henry H. Bell in Perth, has expanded over the decades into a leading rural professional services firm.

The Gaiety theatre are delighted to announce the arrival of a brand-new defibrillator available for Ayr town.

For many years Ayrshire’s well-loved theatre has kept the community at its heart, striving to be as accessible as possible to wide ranging audiences. From putting on BSL interpreted, Audio described and Relaxed Performances into the schedule of their family pantomime ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, alongside the amateur groups who also provide BSL and Audio-described performances, to improving wheelchair access and providing top class service.

Two quick-thinking, community-spirited individuals - Doug Paisley (Technical Manager of the Edinburgh Playhouse) and Michael Stewart (The Gaiety’s Front of House and Access Manager) – entered The Gaiety into a competition to win a brand-new defibrillator, run by St Andrews First Aid, and to huge delight, The Gaiety Theatre was then chosen as this year’s winner of the competition.

Representatives from St Andrews First Aid attended The Gaiety just before Christmas to present the brand-new defibrillator, accompanied by the cast of The Gaiety’s Jack and the Beanstalk.

The defibrillator is available to use for the theatre and local community, if anyone should need to use it, and can be located at The Gaiety Ticket Desk and used as necessary in such times of need before an ambulance arrives. The Ticket Desk is open Monday – Saturday, 10am – 5pm and also open in the evening during show hours. www.thegaiety.co.uk

The business recently established a new cable and fabrication base at the Port of Ayr with new workshops for cables, machining, and welding.

Renovating the new base involved bringing in new and modern equipment, trained specialists and 100 years of Scottish manufacturing and engineering pedigree to Ayrshire. “Our goal has always been to have a strong presence in our local community even as we expand into international markets,” said Steven Edmund, Chief Operating Officer.

EAST AYRSHIRE BUSINESS SET TO GENERATE GROWTH AFTER RECEIVING £50,000 LOAN From Aberdeenshire in the North East, to Ayrshire in the South West, Business Loans Scotland (BLS) has currently issued funds exceeding £2.6 million to 40 Scottish businesses.

Fully funded through the Scottish Growth Scheme and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), BLS is the Fund Manager for a £7 million loan fund which seeks to invest in new and growing Scottish SMEs. With fixed interest rates, repayment periods of up to five years and no additional fees or charges, the loans from BLS have been described by borrowers as an affordable solution to start or expand their business.

Global market leader of small wind turbines and hybrid energy systems, Stewarton based SD Wind Energy received a £50,000 loan to support the business’ 3 year growth strategy which expects to see sales exceed £3.7 million.

Speaking of the loan received, Head of Finance and Corporate Services at SD Wind Energy, Elizabeth McFarlane said:

"Since SD acquired this business from Kingspan last year we have been investing heavily in the business and we have experienced fantastic growth in revenues, in employees and global activity. We expect to see that accelerate.

For me as CFO this brings a new set of “good” problems with regard to working capital and cash flow. The support from Business Loans Scotland is a great help, I found the BLS team easy to deal with and very supportive of our needs and our expansion plans. We will keep

hiring good high energy people to fuel this growth and BLS is a big help in making that happen" Andrew Dickson, Fund Manager of Business Loans Scotland added: “We’re delighted to support SD Wind Energy with a £50,000 loan to realise their growth ambitions. Tucked away on Academy Street stands Corney and Barrow’s wine shop and cellars, a building steeped in 254 years of history. In 1766, Alexander Oliphant launched his wine shipping business and built the labyrinth of cellars beneath the cobbled street. The rest, as they say, is history. Today the cellars house some of the finest wines from around the world, and also functions as an atmospheric backdrop for events.

The Cecilia Beretta estate was founded by the Pasqua family, and from the outset their goal was to produce the highest quality Italian wines, nodding to tradition and heritage, but utilising modern winemaking principles and practices. In 1969 Whighams of Ayr started to bring the Pasqua family’s wines into Scotland. In 1994 Whighams merged with Corney and Barrow, and the relationship with the Pasqua family grew and flourished, their wines making their way on to wine lists all over Scotland and the UK. Corney and Barrow began the celebrations with a tour and tasting in the historic cellars, gathering customers from across Scotland to join the festivities. Cecilia Pasqua, global ambassador for the Cecilia Beretta estate, flew over from Italy to be part of the event. From here, the group

moved to Turnberry to enjoy a five course meal paired with Cecilia Beretta’s wines. The day was a great success and was both a celebration of the enduring partnership with Cecilia Beretta, and of Ayr’s wine history.

In 2018, Callan’s secondary school arranged a week’s work placement for him in Confida’s Property Services division, under the supervision of FM Co-ordinator, Alisdair Murray. Not only did he get a taste of the industry during this time, he demonstrated the sort of attributes and abilities that the company prizes in its people.

After a period of sustained business growth over the next year, the decision was taken to employ an apprentice for the first time. Having previously impressed so much, the role was immediately offered to Callan.

Callan joined the business as an Electrical Installation Apprentice in July 2019. He is currently working towards his Modern Apprenticeship, in conjunction with SJIB and SECTT, while attending Ayrshire College (Ayr Campus) for block release as part of his learning and development.

Callan said: “I enjoy the variety and complexity of the work we do on behalf of our customers. My favourite part of the job is learning new skills and working as part of a small team. I don’t particularly enjoy having to do my homework when I’m at college but I understand that this helps demonstrate my

understanding of the technical processes that we have to use on a daily basis.”

Alisdair Murray said: “Callan is a real bright spark with a great career ahead of him at Confida.”

Callan has recently achieved the Institute of Engineering and Technology's Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment, 4th Edition. He is now qualified to conduct PAT testing and will be visiting customer premises to carry out routine inspection and testing of portable and fixed electrical appliances or equipment.

COUNCIL LAUNCH NEW PROMOTIONAL FILM AND WEBSITE – THIS IS NORTH AYRSHIRE North Ayrshire Council’s business team launched its new look website and promotional film at an event for local businesses at the Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine.

Providing the closing remark on the day, Councillor Alex Gallagher, Cabinet Member for Economy, said: “This is a really exciting time for North Ayrshire. With so much happening this really is a time of transformation for us.

THE BELLEISLE CONSERVATORY CHARITY

The recently re-constructed conservatory in Belleisle Park, Ayr, has, with its architecturally pleasing structure, quickly been reinstalled in the affection of those who visit the park. The old conservatory building proved to be very popular with visitors to the park and the new conservatory has taken on that same mantle, along with the adjoining Walled Garden.

As the running, upkeep and maintenance of the conservatory is managed by the charity’s volunteers, there is an ongoing need to generate funds to finance the operation. With that in mind, the conservatory has held gatherings such as the recent Ayrshire Chamber Connect Networking morning. Close to 60 businesses attended this very successful and popular event and with the perfect weather, many of the meetings spilled over into the surrounding gardens. With the beautiful tropical flora and its location, set in a knoll in the park, the conservatory has proved ideal for weddings, anniversaries and other such celebrations and is available for hire.

Solutions on Demand, based in Stewarton, has spent the last few years expanding into various areas of digital marketing. Specialising in web design, marketing, IT and print, the success they have experienced wouldn’t have been possible without several apprentices from the local area.

They continued this trend of nurturing local talent by taking on another student. 17-year-old Foundation Apprentice Joanna will join Solutions on Demand and work from their vibrant offices one day a week. During this time she will be attending college and working towards her qualification. Among the many duties she will be required to carry out in the office, she’ll be writing blogs and learning skills related to online marketing.

This isn’t the first time Solutions on Demand has taken on a local apprentice. After having completed his work experience from Stewarton Academy at Solutions on Demand, Andrew Blackwood undertook an apprenticeship with the company, gaining his HND qualification in June 2019. Now 18-years-old, Andrew is a valued member of the team, despite his young age.

Managing Director Martin Boyle said: “It’s great to be able to bring in young people like Joanna and help them get a start in their careers. It can be tough for kids to find a direction nowadays, so these apprenticeship schemes are hugely beneficial to everyone involved”.

South Ayrshire Council and local industry have joined forces to produce a new magazine aimed at inspiring young people to pursue future careers in the aerospace and space sectors. ‘Skypath’ is being distributed to all S2, S3 and S4 pupils across South Ayrshire, showcasing the opportunities, employers and apprenticeships available to them at Prestwick Aerospace Campus.

Funded by local aerospace companies, Skypath has been created to help secure the future skills and workforce at Prestwick Aerospace, following the £80million investment through the Ayrshire Growth Deal. The types of jobs available, salaries, tips for climbing the career ladder and advice on choosing relevant subjects at school, are all covered in the magazine, as well as features on the sponsor companies – Spirit AeroSystems, GE Caledonian, BAE Systems, Collins Aerospace, Woodward, Chevron, NATS and Etek.

EUREKA SOLUTIONS DEVELOPER HELPS IMPROVE EDUCATION IN RURAL AFRICA Finlay MacKenzie, a developer from East Kilbride based Eureka Solutions has recently completed his third trip to Africa, helping shape the future of education in deprived areas of the continent by providing modern IT equipment and expertise.

Eureka Solutions – widely recognised as a leading business systems provider throughout the UK – is delighted to sponsor Finlay’s valuable endeavours while he volunteers for small Scottish charity Computers for Africa, an organisation dedicated to providing African schools and institutions with IT training and equipment.

Their next journey took them to a school in Swaziland, where 18 new machines with learning materials were installed. Finlay explained: “The school itself does not have much, but over time we have managed to set them up with a computer lab which they are greatly appreciative of.”

Since 2015 they’ve been training young people across Ayrshire and providing real-life filming opportunities within the world of junior football. Recently 2 participants of the project have landed roles within Kilmarnock and Rangers TV. Fitba Shorts is run by Ayrshire Film Company Director Eddy Gemmell and for 4 years, alongside Director Taylor McInroy, they’ve been providing training and support to young people in Ayrshire looking to develop a career in media and the creative industries.

WHAT COULD CORONAVIRUS MEAN FOR FOREIGN EXCHANGE? The economic impact of the epidemic is causing fluctuations in currency values When the coronavirus outbreak first began, FX markets seemed unperturbed and more concerned with the US-China trade war and Brexit. However, as Covid-19 spread further, the implications for global trade became clearer.

Expectations have grown about the prospect of widespread central bank rate cuts, with the Reserve Bank of Australia among the first to act.

A number of airlines have cancelled flights as bookings drop, while employees in Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea are already working remotely. 300 staff members were sent home from a Canary Wharf office as a precaution after a colleague reported flu-like symptoms.

While this may help with containment, if more businesses follow suit, it may impact productivity. The UK government has outlined its coronavirus action plan, believing that up to a fifth of the workforce could be off sick at the peak of an epidemic, in a “stretching scenario.�

This could put further pressure on the economy during a crucial transition year following Brexit.

The virus has had a more severe impact on the euro. Physically Italy has seen some of the worst breakouts, with a number of northern

cities on lockdown. Germany could bear the brunt of the situation because of trade stalling, such as a halt in demand for cars in China. The US dollar has remained relatively unscathed from the outbreaks, with the greenback outperforming the typically safe heaven Yen, as investors see Asian currencies as a greater risk due to their geographical proximity to coronavirus.

The currency market continues to operate with a high awareness of the risk and the many variables in play regarding coronavirus, which could mean further volatility in the currency market and currency values.

Canine behaviour training aims to help dog guardians identify, manage and retrain specific conduct in a dog which are unhealthy, unsafe or nuisance behaviours.

What is the difference between behaviour training and obedience training?

Obedience work generally covers a range of basic training such as sit-stay-come, heelwork, recall etc and is usually conducted in a class setting.

Behavioural work will target one or perhaps two behaviours specific to a particular dog and the work will be on a 1:2:1 basis, usually carried out in the dog’s home environment.

What is a typical behavioural session?

There is no typical session as such because every dog is different but broadly speaking a session lasts 2-hours during which time, a discussion takes place with the dog’s guardian to cover some basics about the dog, his lifestyle, his role in the home and behaviour in general as well as a description of the issue including identifying triggers, when and how often the behaviour takes place.

RESERVATIONS OPEN AT THE FIRST WATERFRONT HOTEL FROM YACHT HAVENS GROUP Reservations are now open at the first waterside hotel from Yacht Havens Group, one of the UK’s leading marina owners, operators and developers.

AYRSHIRE ENGINEERING TAKING TO THE RAILS Brodie Engineering will be undertaking the modification work on five ScotRail Class 153 carriages, which will be designated for bikes and large sporting equipment on one of Scotland’s most scenic routes, the West Highland Line.

Developed with Skills Development Scotland, Scotland’s Biggest Parents’ Evening saw all 21 Developing the Young Workforce regional groups partner with local employers to showcase to parents the critical skills and occupations of the future through local events across the country.

Parents and carers heard from Skills Development Scotland about Industry 4.0 and the impact it will have on future work and skills. They also heard from Sharon Hodgson, Ayrshire Growth Deal about the investment that will be made in Ayrshire via the Deal over the next ten years.

In addition, parents and carers heard directly from Barclays Bank, Booth Welsh and GE Caledonian about opportunities within their industry, apprenticeship process and skills that they want to see young people coming to them with.

We recently funded in partnership with The Prince’s Trust and Ayrshire College, a Skills Academy at Belmont Academy, Greenwood Academy, Queen Margaret Academy and Auchenharvie Academy.

Work Placements RORY ENJOYED HIS TIME AT SCOTTISH ENTERPRISE My name is Rory and I am an S4 pupil at Marr College in Troon. I have had a really interesting few days of work experience at Scottish Enterprise with the opportunity to gain insight into various parts of the business which has given me a really good understanding of what SE do as Scotland’s Economic Development Agency.

Monday - On my first morning, I was welcomed by the facilities staff who issued me with a laptop. My mentor (Vikki) had made sure that I was set up to use email, Skype and the internet for the activities I would be undertaking. I accompanied Vikki to a meeting at the University of Glasgow to hear about their

evolving Glasgow Riverside Innovation District which SE is a partner in. I was treated to a very interesting tour of the developing campus at Gilmorehill which is vast. This also gave me an insight into construction management on a big scale with the contractor, Multiplex, providing the tour – another sector and role to consider for the future!

Tuesday – I spent the morning in the Finance Department with Stacy and her team. With a keen interest in undertaking a Business / Finance degree it was helpful to understand the processes and procedures which go on behind the scenes.

Teigan from Loudoun Academy carried out her work experience with Aroma Coffee Shop in Galston.

She performed extremely well and was offered a job after completion of her work experience. In her role as a Waiting Assistant, Teigan is responsible for meeting and greeting customers, serving food and drink and preparing the meals.

Jaiden, a senior pupil from James Reid School in Saltcoats completed a 10-week work James Reid experience placement with KO-NEKT Centre in Ardrossan.

School The Centre is the first of its kind in Ayrshire, supporting children and young people aged 5-18yrs who have additional support needs.

KO-NEKT put in place a training course which Jaiden completed with flying colours and from the experience, he has become a voluntary member of staff at his school.

The course covered, time keeping, money management, travel to and from work, language and communication, google search and appropriate social media usage, as well as taking and redirecting calls and sending emails.

Jaiden’s confidence and independence improved and by the end of the 10 weeks he was able to work independently.

ALEC'S CHAMBER BLOG Marr College with Transport Scotland with a focus on the Climate change emergency. This really opened my eyes to the impact of climate change and approaches being used

by SE and other agencies to meet targets.

I spent the afternoon in Grants Management which involved reviewing claims from companies including assessing company financial status etc. They took me through some of the current forecasting activity and showed me some Excel hints and tips including the V-lookup! Again, all this was a helpful insight into accounts

and finance for future career choices.

Thursday – I accompanied Iain, Account Manager, on a company visit to Eclipse Blinds. I was given a tour of the company premises including the factory floor.

This gave me an insight into Account Management and what services and products SE can offer to companies like the development of Eclipse’s web strategy.

Overall, I really enjoyed my time with SE and would like to thank everyone who gave me their time to help me learn.

My name is Alec, an S4 Pupil at Auchenharvie Academy. I really enjoy working Auchenharv ie with computers Academy in school and went to Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce to experience what it’s like to work in an office environment.

During my time, I saw what it was like not only to work in an office, but also to see what else the DYW team does. I went round all staff members and found out what their job role involved. I went out with Steven to observe a work experience H&S check for a pupil who had self-sourced their own placement. After returning to the office, I sat in on the Educational Team Meeting.

This was a great way to see the impact DYW Ayrshire has on each of the secondary schools in South, North and East Ayrshire. I went to St Joseph’s Academy in Kilmarnock with Natalie, it was great to see the end result and how much hard work is put in to sourcing a business or organisation. I went to Kyle Academy in Ayr with Christina and this gave me the chance to see how different schools organise their careers events and fayres. I was also able to see first-hand the different types of businesses who engage with these events.

By the end of the week I had a great understanding of what the chamber does and what it is like to work within an office environment. By Friday I was very comfortable around the other staff as they were all very welcoming and nice.

Girvan Academy pupils visit William Grant & Sons

William Grant & Sons recently hosted Girvan Academy pupils studying Higher & Advanced Higher Chemistry at their distillery in Girvan.

The visit allowed the pupils to see around the distillery and find out about the different processes which are carried out, helping to feed into their topic ‘The Chemical Industry’. They also got to spend time with the Coopers for a shot at barrel making.

Tarbolton Primary P2-P4 STEM Event Greenwood Academy welcomed Sandy Speakman of Morgan Stanley who visited the school and delivered sessions for their National 5 & Higher Cyber Security classes covering topics: Data Security, Ethical Hacking and Digital Forensics.

The support gave pupils the opportunity to hear of different careers within Cyber Security and gave context to what they had been learning in their class.

• The talk that Sandy gave was very informative and I learned a lot. I would really enjoy it if he came back and delivered another talk or did some practical work with us.

• Sandy was a real expert at Cyber Security and helped myself and my classmates to understand the life that comes with working in the Cyber Security sector. His personality and encouragement made listening to his presentation enjoyable.

• Sandy was very interesting. He showed us a realistic insight into the world of Cyber Security. The knowledge he gave us was extremely useful but he also made the topics fun which is key. It was extremely interesting to find out he created his own viruses and how to keep personal systems safe from malicious hackers. It was also interesting to find out how he started coding viruses.

• A very good presentation which was very helpful towards our Cyber Security work. It was extremely interesting to find out about viruses and also how he created his own.

• I found the talk very interesting and I would like to learn more. It would be fun if he did a hacking demonstration/exercise sort of thing. Maybe something on jobs in the Computing industry too.

• Sandy provided us with a very good insight into Cyber Security.

In January, Tarbolton Primary School held a STEM event for their P2-4 school pupils. They welcomed a Metallurgist STEM Ambassador, GE Aviation, BAE Systems and Ayrshire Roads Alliance into the school to hold interactive talks. What a great way to introduce young people to the world of work using STEM!

The schools invited all parents, carers and pupils of the school along to speak with local employers to learn about the vast opportunities available to their young people.
