Ayrshirekasvattajien syyskokous
Veittoo-Paavola Farm Inspired by the journey to Åland and the Spring meeting there last Spring, I decided to take part in the Ayrshire Breeder’s Autumn meeting in Tampere. Our first farm visit went to the Veittoo-Paavola farm.
The farm and the owners
The farm has been in the possession of the same family since 1549. The present owners Katri and Mika Karvinen bought the farm from Katris parents in 2012. There are 43 hectars of fields, partly their own and partly leased, all producing grass. Both Katri and Mika have been educated in agriculture.
Ayrshires are the breed number one
There have been Ayrshires on the farm since 1950’s. Today there is 60 % Ayrshires, 30 % Holsteins and the rest are Finnish breed. The number of Holsteins is continually reduced, while the Ayrshires are more suitable for this farm. They are healthier and have better longevity. They started milk recording in 2012, the herd average of milk was then 8 200 kg, in 2014 it was a bit over 9 000 kg and in 2015 9 700 kg. The average for the Ayrshires was 9 890 kg and for the Holsteins 10 320 kg.
Cowshed, fodder and breeding
The new free stall was built in 2014. There is room for 48 cows and a 2 x 6 herringbone milking parlour. The young stock lives in the old cowshed, which was built in 1975. There the older heifers are stalled on one side and the younger heifers
and calves are in boxes on the other side. The oldest cowshed from 1901 isn’t used any more. The cows are fed with a total mixed ration. Katri has been working for Faba as a consultant and she is in charge of the planning of the breeding. She uses mostly sires from Faba or Semex and she focuses on longevity and health. The farm takes part in a genome project, in which every heifer calf is genome tested. The consultant from Faba does an exterior classification for the cows once or twice a year.
Yölintu, Hetty and Yvette
Yölintu (Y-T Oilo x T. Lista) is the oldest cow. She has calved 6 times. The average for 305 days is 8 089 - 276 - 3,41 - 252 - 3,12. One of her daughters is Veittoon Emma (K. Toivo). In her third lactation the 305 day production was 10 216 - 394 3,86 - 317 - 3,1. Emma has two daughters Veittoon Lazzarella (Lagace Motown ET) and Veittoon Maruzella (VR Tuuma). The two other daughters of Yölintu are Veittoon Qstone (Kellcrest Showstar ET) and Veittoon Lento (V-V Valo) Veittoon Hetty (R.Facet x N. Ooppium x P. Reelo) has the best breeding index NTM +16. Hetty has one daughter Veittoon Letty (VR Arina). Yvette (P. Priha x H. Hörö) has calved 5 times. The average production for 305 days has been 11 775 - 471 - 4,0 - 395 - 3,35. Yvette has two daughters Veittoon Josefin and Veittoon Mariette. We thank you for your hospitality and wish Katri and Mika a happy life with their cows. Heli Hakamaa
Moision Ayrshire Syyskokouksen toisena vierailukohteena oli Juha Rinkisen ja Jani Huotarin omistaman MTY Moision uusi, avara pihatto ja ayrshirekarja Ruoveden Jäminkipohjassa.
en määrä nousi 48 lypsävään. Vuoden 2011 alussa Juha ja Jani perustivat maatalousyhtymän ja vuonna 2012 tehtiin tilakaupat.

Karja uuteen pihattoon
Juha tuli Moisioon tammikuussa 2006 lomittamaan silloisen isännän pitkää sairaslomaa. Lomitusta kesti kaksi vuotta. Vuonna 2008 Juha osti Moision 20 lehmän karjan, joka koostui 16 ayrshirestä ja neljästä holsteinista sekä vuokrasi tilan koneineen. Samalla
karjan kokoa kasvatettiin 36 lypsävään. Juha on tykännyt ayrshirestä tilanpidon alusta asti ja kertookin päässeensä holsteinjalostuksessa tavoitteeseensa - holsteineja ei ole. Vuonna 2009 parsinavetan hiehopaikoille tehtiin lisää tilaa lypsäville ja hiehot muuttivat navetan päätyyn kylmäpihattoon. Tällä muutoksella lehmi-
Juhan mukaan vanhassa navetassa olisi tuotettu vielä viitisen vuotta edullisesti maitoa, mutta tavoitteena on tehdä tätä työtä terveenä eläkeikään asti. Niinpä tilan uusi pihatto otettiin käyttöön 14.10.2015. Uusi pihatto valmistui haastavaan aikaan, mutta Juhalla ja
