Brief Outline: The intention of this studio is to develop a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments with reference to interior techniques and its implications on the interior design practice. Here interior technique is defined as “A method, tool and medium that modifies, alters, conceals, exposes an interior element, thus transforming the transformable quality of the space.” The studio offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design.

It emphasizes the relationship between Interior techniques and its expression, identity and design outcome. The first four weeks are part of the common foundation program, where students from all streams work together to develop common skills and abilities. The later part of the studio is largely divided into two modules: the first module builds an argument on interior techniques through existing projects and the second module intends to develop a systematic approach to the application of the argument in three different contexts. It is an opportunity to develop an individual design position for disparate sites keeping the program constant.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to: • Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/ approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice.

• Ability to translate/represent the design argument/ position/approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes.

• Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position.

• Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

Week 01-02 | FD PG Common Exercises

Objectory Process: The exercise was aimed to develop a methodology to identify, list, and analyse objects by dismantling its parts and components and helped us identify and understand the manufacturing process.

The pressure cookers are extensively used in household for preparing food. The main component of the vessel is the pressure valve which is used to release the steam pressure inside the vessel. The pressure valve is cylindrical in shape and has a hollow pipe in the middle for the passage of steam, along the shape it has stratigically placed circular hollow points which releases the steam and the sound resembles that of a whistle. The object is detachable for easy and thorough cleaning.

SECTION AA’ SCALE: 2:1 During operation, the only way steam can escape from the cooker is from the steam vent i.e. when pressure inside the pan reaches a level sufficient to lift the pressure regulator, the steam vent opens up. At this pressure release event, steam escapes with a whistling sound (and hence whistle and pressure release events are used interchangeably herein), pressure inside the pan drops causing the pressure regulator to again close the steam vent, and the process repeats.

Only serving the purpose of a clutch, clicking in and out while letting the air vent pipe in.

The dead weight cylinder and pin of a device plays a role of Dead weight. The bottom opening of pin will be subjected to pressure inside the cooker. As soon as the pressure force acting on the pin gets equal to weight of dead weight cylinder and the pin due to this the pin will have upward vertical motion. The pin in turn will force the dead weight cylinder in upward direction.

Week 03-04 | FD PG Common Exercises

Factory Process: A factory is a place where materials are processed and transformed with precision, accuracy, and tolerance for assembly. This exercise imitates a manufacturing environment where the process of making starts with a well-planned strategy. It focuses on the planning of manufacturing and execution. The exercise revolves around exploring the ideas of the detail, assembly, tectonics and material as a central core of making. The Planning of Making will involve a thorough understanding of these terms.

The brief was to design a magazine stand for Domus magazine which explored more the idea of materiality and properties of manufacturing, material technique developed more in terms of manufacturing processes and their complexities.

The initial iterations had been designed according to floor and wall mounting constraints, the design seemed too linear but we derived some ideas and incorporated that in our final design.

Developing the Argument Brief: The nature of interior spaces is always influenced by the experience of the built environment around it, hence it becomes imperative to create spaces within that particular dialogue, respecting all the governing factors. Integrity of a planer surface is very important, the flexibility to adjust to the predominant ideals of certain functions guide the make and built of the space.

Since its an old Haveli in Shahjahanad, the material pallete has been quite similar to of that era, the use wood, bamboo chic, also ligting is the only modern intervention.

The courtyard houses offer only the central viewpoints which are common to the general public, later when moving around, it gets seggregated via the walls, playing a cohesive planning amongst the design in itself.

The courtyard in itself offered common focal points but later got divided via the different functions and spaces along the floor plate.

The floor plate act as a datum and surface for the focal points, it creates ambiguous divisions whose axis throughout remains the same.

The material like different flooring elements also do the trick, the dark kota flooring offers straight constrast to the marble, the fountain in the middle acts as the only common point to the visitor’s eyes.

All the functions sits on the corners opposite to each others, the vicinity and adjacancy of other different function helps further the cause.

The structures can have many subparts which further helps the design to create staggering movements throughout the space.

The floor plate act as a datum and surface for the focal points, it creates ambiguous divisions and helps in adjusting the functions accordingly in the sub spaces.

]Mumbai Adaptive Reuse The space, atop a 100-year-old Victorian era heritage structure, was acquired with the windows boarded up, wooden trusses braced with metal and brick walls segregating different zones. The idea of unearthing and discovering, rather than a set mandatory approach, was adopted not only to respect, retain and celebrate the spirit of the place but also respond to the myriad experiences the space could possibly offer.

Aranya Township was designed as a site and services project spread laid out in six sectors that converge on a central spine i.e., the Central Business District. One of the key elements of Doshi’s design was a hierarchy of open spaces that included small courtyards to be shared by three to four families, larger green spaces for each of the settlement’s six sectors, and a central playing field to serve the entire development.

Ideating Roles of an Interior Designer

Week 06-07 | FD PG Module 02

Ideating Role 1 of Interior Designer Brief:

While processing the space when I looked at it for the first time, many ideas flowed around and there were many interventions that could have plausibly flourished here, but there is history of a space, the usage back then, the context and the values attached.

To define thresholds via modulating surfaces was my goal here, but at the same time a visual barrier had to be created because the open spaces lose their charm of curiosity, while creating any other function in the space, I tried to highlight the existing features, the visual barrier then became the aftermath of it quite unconsciously.The space means nothing if the experience can’t be explained as a story later on, the flair for the drama became a revolutionary factor for me while designing the space.

To bring about all the elements, I tried to keep the space in its raw form, only additions modulated and governed the existing spaces carving out certain areas for group discussion.

Process of Argument A total of 9 projects were observed and analysed with respect to the interior and material techniques they incorporated in order to achieve a said space. From there we had to derive our argument which would be a point of initiation for a process and exchanged a dialogue with the normal.

A very discreet entrance which very sharply differentiates exhibition space from the viewing space, achieved by the formation of intangible threshold via the two metal members, the existing columns are highlighted via the distinction of the ceiling, the strong contrasting pallete offers the perfect variation. A mother and two kids are seen entering the exhibition, the space is interactive enough to capture the attention of the kids which further their curiosity towards science and art alike.

From a very distinctive and public exhibition space, one enters into an abyss/ passage which makes one wander about, the space very discreetly defines secluded corners in a linear setting and fuels intrigue for the exhibition as well, the dimness of light via barriers onto the floor is more to manipulate the ambiance of the space. The mother and two kids are stopping down to see the curated ec=xhibition while experiancing the factor of mystery while exploring the space.

The abyss leads the famly of three to more rusted, semi-private exhibition which is meant to be discovered by the follies around, one roams around to stumble upon certein exhibit areas, this develops more interest in kids as the space is meant to be explored than to be followed around by demarkations, they itself get defined due to the formation of positive and negative spaces around the space.

From a semi-private space one follows around and enters a completely dense black room which seems to have occulus on top, the only source of light. The mystic ambiance supported by the wood display racks is free flowing in its form and nature which also demarcates the space while maintaing the integrity of an existing aesthetic of the space.

The final part of the space is an open coworking space which offers semi open spaces and and clusters of indvidual spaces while adding a bit of translucancy amongst spaces created by wire mesh, the staircase shifted to the left area actually created a corner for group discussion. The mother is already on the platform heading towards her own personal space while her kids explore and play around the co-working space.

Ideating Role 2 of Interior Designer Brief: The whole plan is based on the idea of thresholds and transitioning into spaces, the entrances have been kept simple and gives the visitor a peak of what’s coming next.

The adjacent spaces influenced the pattern of the movement throughout the plan and doing so, it offered views from other pockets but all this while keeping intact the separation of the spaces and their transition to the other designated spaces. It offered transparency and bifurcation through screens and helped me in providing an orientation to the movement of the user. The whole idea was supported by the perception of the user or the visitor unconsciously dwelling on the elements and following the path laid down.

The design is juxtaposition of screens varied in usage from one plane to the other, the play of volume is via the ceiling and the staircase area which leads down to the exhibit for all transitional qualities.

1. In diagram one, no spatial or visual contimuity is possible without adjacent spaces.

2. Influence the pattern of the movement and use within it.

3. Offer views from the other pockets of the space.

4. Establishing visual connection while still keeping intact the seperation of the space.

The master arhitect exchange helped me in further formulating my own design and actally visualise the more greater possibilities of thresholds in a space.

The escape is from the mundane life into the fenestrations of life of Da vinci through moving around the objects designed which gave a direction to the user around.

The idea was to design an exhibition with raising and incorporting the said argument The whole plan is based on the idea of thresholds and transitioning into spaces, the entrances have been kept simple and gives the visitor a peak of what’s coming next, moving forward, the techniques of space making became a motive for me to incorporate the argument and it furthered my idea of visual discrepancy but maintained connectivity in between.

A single floor plan was divided in grids to formulate spaces and thresholds.

It then started out with mapping areas and trantional spaces to formulate thresholds.

The seggregation of spaces lead to explore thresholds volumetrically and via planes as well.

The planning was also an outcome of postive-negative spaces in a floor area given.

This gave rise to frame which later formulated into an envelope for the space, here form followed form.

The whole concept revolves around thresholds and the types of it.
