CRAFT+FUTURE=? SPECULATIVE INTERIOR PRACTICES Faculty: Rishav Jain TA: Shail s Sheth

Link: https://portfolio.cept.ac.in/2021/S/fd/craft-future-speculative-interior-practices-id4000-spring-2021/craft-futurepattern-spring-2021-pid20078

The studio dwells into discussing the positions of craft in contemporary interior architecture practices. With a combination of research and design methods, the studio focuses on envisaging future directions of craft productions. The studio will be largely divided into two parts: the first part uses intensive research techniques to establish a theoretical position of craft and the second part intends to test the position through a design problem. The studio involves rigorous reading sessions, theoretical analysis, field studies, hands-on explorations with craft techniques along with design discussions. With an interdisciplinary approach towards design, this course uses research and design techniques to address a design situation. The studio is largely divided into four modules, looking at the idea of future of craft. The four modules also emphasize the learning outcomes of the course: Know the contemporary position of craft, Ideate possibilities about the vision of the future, Develop an individual position for its future and Make relevant design ideas representing the vision of future of craft.

Space to self/ for self 11. Space to meet people 12. Space for guiding self and others. As one moved closer to the structure, they realized how simple and intricate it as, again symbolic of problems in life; no matter how daunting they were, the area made them realize that if they faced it head-on then it is a simple and can be solved easily. The chaos let them to other areas which helped them contemplate and introspect in their own life following the great view of a zenith, which helped them further connect with their higher self. The entire plan remarked and totaled a journey of a temple via a pilgrimage which used to once the more leisured activity among people. In search of calm and then later connecting with like minded people. The entire floor plate didn’t compromise of walls in order to breakaway from self-imposed rigidity, in fact the vertical members provided seclusion wherever necessary but not so much so that it actually still could be seen as a part of the space. The areas outside were completely for interaction or retrospection, the spaces encouraged conversations helping people guide others and leaving a legacy, encouraging the learning from various walks of life.

The studio, broadly aims to develop an ability to design through research-led / research-informed approaches for realizing Interior projects, it focuses intensely on Business aspects of the profession that drive the outcome in real-life scenarios. The studio tries to develop the ability to understand and respond to the practical aspects that are key drivers in shaping the outcome of projects - like client requirements, site constraints, budgets, technical specifications, procurement/ execution processes, services coordination and other such technicalities. The studio is structured on a common programmatic ground related to a particular industry need with a choice for students to select different sites and cultural contexts to develop their individual unique responses. The key outcomes of the studio will include: - Making of a Design brief report (DBR) - Interior design presentations - Technical/ working drawings with crucial details - Drawings with coordinated Services design (MEPF) - Technical Specifications - Budgetary planning & BOQ. All of these factors included so as to contribute in realizing the design development through a practical research based approach and not just to perceive the design through a conceptual framework. and Make relevant design ideas representing the vision of future of craft.

People of Ahmedabad enjoy their snacks, they love to eat out and explore whatever that is new. Weekends are the truly loud with everyone stepping out to relax. Post covid era, much to their dislike, has changed the way of life here. The snacking habits have now evolved, post covid as the organic produce and flowers. The retail of such items offers a great opportunity for the people who don’t have exact materials at home, where you can buy fresh and learn how to use them, or buy ready-made fresh organic produce/ reproduce. All this while “luxurising” the idea of organic produce in a tastier and more healthy way in addition to stressed households achieve their wellness goals. The space is envisioned as two strong volumes, to create a space which flows vertically as well as horizontally, it was necessary to create a puncture which would then in fact connect the two visually, but not completely so as to takes away from the function of the space. The ground floor is thought out to be a supermarket which offers greens and daily use items, branded and thoroughly checked. The idea is to provide a platform to all home-grown brands to promote their fresh produce and reproduce which in turn takes forward the idea of luxirizing the daily use items, at the same time promotes a healthy competition between the brands to maintain the product quality. The three major areas at the ground level plan are the staircase, the juice counter and the arena displaying raw food/ packaged food. Thus, eliminating the idea of preservatives.

DROPBOX: WITHIN A SOCIAL CONTEXT Faculty: Mili Parekh TA: Rajvi Amrelia

Link: https://portfolio.cept.ac.in/2021/M/fd/dropbox-within-a-social-context-id4008-monsoon-2021

Dropbox is a container that is placed within a community settlement to address their needs, stimulates the cultural identity of its inhabitants and surrounding. The studio will be divided in different parts which will teach students to develop an ability to sensitively understand contextual scale in terms of urban interiors. In the first part, the contextual study will give them an understanding of how to comprehend a given site, surrounding and user group. In the Proportion study, they will learn to understand the scale and proportions of an insert in the context of the neighbourhood. In Programme development, students learn the methods to develop a client brief based on questioning ways of living and needs within the context. Then they have to come up with an appropriate program along with naming their box and test it through the selected context (site/ program). The ability to analyze, visualize and interpret information as relevant to space designing will be covered in concept development and final design insert. Each part will have new visualizations in the form of different mediums. Students will learn to represent their analyse, understanding and design concept in form of visuals, technical drawings and 3D renderings within the social context.’

The Big Rethink : In Interior Practices Faculty: Rishav Jain, Kireet Patel, Aprajita Basu TA: Shail s Sheth, Param Singh Dayani

Argument: “Altering planes, volumes and space making elements can define thresholds” Modulating planes to create functionally independent spaces through intangible disguised entities where the function follows the form and breaks the sequence of combined interiors/ spaces.

The whole plan is based on the idea of thresholds and transitioning into spaces, the entrances is kept simple and gives the visitor a peak of what’s coming next, moving forward, the techniques of space making were also my motive to incorporate and that it furthered my idea of visual discrepancy but maintained connectivity in between. The adjacent spaces influenced the pattern of the movement throughout the plan and doing so again it offered views from other pockets but keeping intact the separation of the spaces and their transition. It also offered transparency and bifurcation through screens and helped me in providing an orientation to the movement of the user. Concept : All the elements are derived on the basis of orientation of circulation as well as the thresholds, the whole design progresses towards formulating areas with transition in views and spaces, which furthers the path to the viewer and provides with ample way for wandering around the follies. The whole concept revolves around thresholds and the types of it. Types of thresholds indentifiable 1. Soft Thresholds 3. Hybrid Threshold

2. Hard Thresholds

3. Hybrid Threshold

THEN STARTED OUT MAPPING REQUIRED AREAS AND PLANNING

THE PLANNING STARTED OUT AT POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE VOLUME MASSES

IT KEPT ON GOING TILL THE SECOND FLOOR PLATE, THIS TIME THRESHOLDS WERE EXPLORED IN VOLUMES.

THIS ALSO FORMED THE ENVELOPE OF THE SITE, HERE THE FORM FOLLOWED THE FORM.

4. Transitional Thresholds

Sectional Perspective

Sectional Perspective

The envelope became the base for the design developement, the grid allowed multiple iterations in design which further influenced the movement and directionality of the design. The adjacent spaces influenced the pattern of the movement throughout the plan and doing so, it offered views from other pockets but all this while keeping intact the separation of the spaces and their transition to the other designated spaces. The whole idea was supported by the perception of the user or the visitor unconsciously dwelling on the elements and following the path laid down. The escape is from the mundane life into the fenestrations of life of Da vinci through moving around the objects designed which gave a direction to the user around.

FOR EARTH’S SAKE Studio Cube Professional practice project Designation: Interior Designer

Link : https://www.studiocube.in/

Mr. Vidur Mayor came to us with one thought - The conscious design and sustainable alternatives have always been long talked about and discussed; they are strongly encouraged because it is beneficial to our environment. It is each and every one of our duties and responsibilities to protect and take care of our environment, a step towards fine tuning our legacy. For Earth’s Sake project is one such small initiative towards the reduction the plastic waste in our daily use. The client’s brief was of a retail experience which offers over 70 different daily use ecofriendly products, groceries and more coming up soon. The main idea behind their small effort is strong initiative to reduce the carbon footprint by minimizing the use of plastic and other non-sustainable materials to zero. T he conscious design and sustainable alternatives were our main prerogative in this design brief. The MS pipes which we usually see as part of our daily plumbing purposes have been used here as a support structure for our wooden shelves, they pose as a strong, reusable unit and last long for a good period of time. It’s diverse in use, forms and sizes hereby replacing plastic tubes. For wooden planks, an alternative of hardwood, also known as rubberwood is used. It might evoke the impression of a rubbery, bendable wood. In actuality, this dense-grained lumber is hard and durable.

Situated in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand, the design of this site is one step towards sustainable conscious design. We’ve tried to incorporate and take care of anything and everything which sustains this building on naturals resources as well as recycled elements like water, electricity etc. The corrugated ship containers were our choice of blocks or cladding, for a factory to be used by Moksha Naturals, a brand invested in taking forward the scope of essential oils, natural beauty products etc. It only seemed fair for us to consider that as an inspiration and design this building.

Wood Is Good FOAID INDIA 2017 WOOD IS GOOD COMPETITION GOLD WINNER, PEARL ACADEMY DELHI. FEATURED IN – SOCIETY INTERIORS MAGAZINE, DECEMBER EDITION 2017 StepSit The pace of the life today in the Metropolitan cities is faster than ever. People are re-locating constantly because of work or education. The key idea here is to work with “Adaptability”, and also efficiently serve the purpose. The aspiring young generation look at objects, gadgets and furniture with an additional lens of aesthetics. If we take an example of the “high end gadgets”, such as smart phones or laptops which is a big hit with the youth, because they are adaptable, efficient, utilitarian, and simple yet aesthetically appealing. MULTIPURPOSE OBJECT This object could become a ladder which could be used in numerous ways with simple joineries and the size. At first it functions as any other ladder, and then converted into an object for sitting, for storage such as a rack with shelves, a swing with a few additional hinges and in the end, a box, which can be used as a base for a planter. The size of the ladder can be altered for the purpose it’s serving. Target User – Young Couples and college Students moving to the Metropolitan cities Key Concept - Adaptable, efficient, utilitarian, and simple yet aesthetically appealing
