Since its earliest recorded sporting fixtures in 1860, there has been a very strong tradition of sporting excellence and involvement at Aylesbury Grammar School.
We want Sport and PE to be a subject that teaches students skills, habits and qualities that will benefit them in their present life but also help develop their character as they mature. Regardless of ability and irrespective of background and circumstance, there shouldn't be any barrier to participation in School sport.
The range and opportunities within AGS Sport and PE provide something for all abilities and interests. From recreational sports through to elite performance, the dedicated and professional team of staff and coaches ensure that everyone makes progress and enjoys their Sport.

WELCOME TO SPORT AND PE AT AGS
Aylesbury Grammar School has been nurturing character since 1598. Our core values of respect and aspire enable our students and staff to flourish in all they do. We provide an environment where we celebrate difference, embrace opportunity and lead with humility.
Sport and PE play a pivotal role as a subject that allows students to develop both physical and emotional awareness for themselves as individuals, and their peers as part of a team. It teaches students how to behave and through participation develop their ability to evaluate situations effectively, make informed and positive decisions and show courage whilst testing new approaches to their learning.
It is widely recognised that physical activity is key to maintaining a healthy, active and balanced lifestyle supporting physical and mental well-being.
We understand the many advantages of engagement and enjoyment in a well balanced Sport and PE programme and the benefit to our students' physical, social and emotional wellbeing.
We are incredibly proud of our extensive and evolving Sport and PE Programme which is led by a team of highly motivated, well-organised and innovative leaders.
Embedded in our School values, our vision here at Aylesbury Grammar School is to provide every student, irrespective of background and circumstance an opportunity of self discovery through participation in sport.
AGS provides an exceptional education, that is unparalleled in breadth and rich in learning opportunities, championing inclusivity and striving to become international leaders.
United in our determination to reflect our dynamic and diverse community, we believe that equality is about recognising and removing barriers faced by students involved or wanting to be involved in School sports.
It’s about ensuring the culture of sport is one that values diversity and enables full involvement of disadvantaged groups in every aspect of sport.
Beyond our extensive facilities and sporting provision, nestled within our extra curricular provision, students can enjoy access to a range of opportunities and activities before, during and after School regardless of level of ability, where students are free to discover their passion at their own pace.
Aylesbury Grammar School’s sporting legacy is considerable. With achievements in all areas of sport from athletes to analysts, it's something that our Old Aylesburians remember fondly from their time at AGS.
SPORT AND PE PHILOSOPHY
Learning is at the centre of all we do. Outstanding teaching empowers students to become independent learners, with the resourcefulness, creativity and understanding to succeed now and in the future. It is important that all students are fully aware of how they can plan and evaluate their learning to develop into successful learners.
The School encourages students to develop as sportspeople, at their own rate, and experience an exposure to sports and activities that help to develop physical literacy, strategic awareness, health and wellbeing as well as providing social opportunities skills necessary to the development of all our students. More ambitious students are challenged effectively, both within the curriculum and in the many extra-curricular activities available.
The AGS Learner provides the backbone of learning and teaching throughout the School encouraging independent learners, equipped with all the skills to adapt successfully to life beyond school.
As students progress through the School and key skills are developed, activities that test tactical and strategic knowledge are introduced as well as the constant message of encouraging lifelong physical activity.
SPORT FOR ALL
We are united in our determination to reflect our dynamic and diverse community. Equality is about recognising and removing barriers faced by students involved or wanting to be involved in School sports. It’s about changing the culture of sport to one that values diversity and enables full involvement of disadvantaged groups in every aspect of sport.
Aylesbury Grammar School is committed to achieving equality in School sports and takes a proactive and leading role in its approach to this by promoting equality in sport to ensure that there are no barriers to participation and involvement for any social group.
SPORT AND PE PROGRA
Through our comprehensive approach to character of our students, the School prepare challenges they will face both within and be true value of what Sport and PE at Aylesbury brings out in its students.
The Games Curriculum is skilfully planned b who are passionate about their subject students well. The curriculum seeks to d knowledge, tactical awareness and skills in building upon previous units of learning and across subjects to be established.
Students are introduced to a broad and varied they start at AGS, which we build on through School.
Physical Education (PE) and Games are often confused with one another, or used as an intertwined term. Our Games activities here at AGS develop important individual and team skills such as camaraderie and provide students with a sense of belonging, vital attributes in nurturing and inspiring our students to explore for themselves who they want to be and find their place in the world.
Physical Education (PE) adds breadth and depth to the curriculum and here we focus on health-related fitness, gymnastics, racket sports such as badminton and squash and swimming in Key Stage 3.
When participating in Games such as cricket, football, rugby, tennis and softball; students discover more about themselves in an environment outside of the classroom and meet those challenges head on with empathy and humility.
We understand the importance Physical Education and Games bring to our students' physical, social and emotional wellbeing. Our extensive programme, together with timetabled lessons (four periods of PE and Games per fortnight) fosters a lifelong love of sport and physical activity.
Students in Key Stage 3 have:
2 x 1 hour PE lessons in either Week A or B.
Students in Key Stage 3 have: 1 x 2 hour lesson of Games in alternate weeks to PE.
Students in Key Stage 4 have: 1 x 1 hour PE lesson in each week.
Students in Key Stage 4 have: 1 x 1 hour Games lesson in each week.

EXTRA CURRICULAR
We are proud to offer an extensive array of extra curricular opportunities to all of our students, regardless of their background, circumstances and experience. The range and extent of opportunities, including educational and recreational visits, are a true strength of the School.
Here at AGS we actively promote self discovery through participation in sports that students are passionate about. These life enriching activities take place across the School day enhancing classroom learning and enjoyment.
The development of new skills and passions allows students to explore ideas and establish meaningful relationships with peers and other teaching staff outside of their curriculum learning.
A full list of our sporting extra curricular activities can be viewed on our website at ags.bucks.sch.uk/enrichment/sports
In addition, we have a competitive School fixture list for ambitious students across a wide range of sports at local, regional and national level.
Recent successes at both local and national level mean we offer an aspirational environment for all of our students progressing their sporting journeys.
AGS has previously been named in the School Sports Magazine as one of the leading Schools for competitive sport, with a reputation for sporting excellence and involvement.
As with all School sports, fixtures and events may be held and played during specific terms, such as Rugby in the Autumn Term and Football in the Spring Term. However, please note that there may be occasions where certain fixtures and cup events will have to be played in different terms. At the start of each term we will share the schedule for AGS Sport and PE Extra Curricular activities for the term.
AND DID YOU KNOW?
In 2019, the School was ranked third in England for state school sport by the School Sports Magazine. An amazing accolade and testament to the provision and expertise of the staff and students.
With national success in Handball, Squash, Swimming, Cross Country, Tennis, Athletics alongside the larger team sports of Rugby, Football and Cricket, the School excels in providing the very best opportunities.

FIXTURES AND AVAILABILITY
Each term the Sport and PE department will share with you a schedule of events and fixtures for the upcoming term* and can be accessed by students via noticeboards and sports specific Google Classrooms. Certain sports are timetabled to specific terms via the Curriculum, such as Rugby scheduled in the Autumn Term and Football in the Spring Term. There are occasions when fixtures may be played in a different season due to ‘play by dates’ or successful cup competitions, however we shall endeavour to inform you and students of any changes in advance.
At AGS we encourage all students to participate in our enviable selection of extra-curricular activities. We want our students to be challenged to achieve their very best, to flourish in all they do and to share a positive outlook with others.
The extensive nature of our PE and Sport programme requires students to regularly attend and participate fully in training and practice sessions.
We ask that students commit to their School team and together with parents make the arrangements necessary to meet those commitments. Without your support the School would not be able to honour these extensive fixtures. Any non-attendance must be notified to the Director of Sport or a member of the Sport & PE department staff in advance.
*Kindly note that schedules are subject to change
MATCH DAY PROTOCOLS
We expect students to wear school uniform prior to and after all fixtures, unless specified on the team sheet. If students are travelling direct then it is important that they report to their teacher as soon as the rest of the squad arrive; likewise, at the end of a fixture if they are travelling home with parents, they should ensure they have let their teacher know.
In the event of student absence or unavailability for weekend fixtures, parents must contact the member of staff in charge of that team and inform them of the reason for absence*. This is vital for ensuring fixtures can be fulfilled and students are giving opportunities to represents AGS.
Students should represent the school in correct sports kit as required by their sport. This is outlined in the PE and Sport Kit section of this document. When the weather becomes cold, for sports outside we would recommend black base layers for matches and training which are to be worn underneath the shirt. We ask that students wear AGS sports kit for all matches and training, which may mean a quick turnaround in the washing machine.
All players are expected to attend the post-match hospitality provided and socialise with their own team and where possible the opposition students. We firmly believe that this is a vital aspect of the sporting provision and one that offers the students a time to reflect on and talk about their individual and team performance, whilst also helping to develop important social skills.
*For staff contact details see Page 52 Contact Us
All AGS students are expected to promote the highest standards of conduct and fairplay, both on and off the field. Drawing from the School’s vision, purpose, promise, values and heritage, these intrinsically linked concepts support the School’s key message, “Nurturing Character since 1598”.
SAFETY
Staff accompanying teams are appropriately qualified (including First Aid) and carry First Aid kits. In the event of serious injury staff will contact parents and will accompany the student to hospital if necessary. All students who take part in School matches are covered by the School insurance policy. Staff involved with the delivery of our Rugby provision, in the Curriculum and Extra-Curricular, complete the RFU’s HEADCASE programme, which is a concussion awareness and education resource.
FOOTBALL
We ask that students wear appropriate Football boots and shin pads during their lessons and extra-curricular activities.
RUGBY
Students need to ensure they have a gumshield and correct footwear. Most boots have interchangeable studs and we ask all students to ensure that they have the correct studs when playing in rugby matches.
SQUASH
The England Squash and Racquetball Association has made the wearing of suitable eye protection mandatory for all those U19 players taking part in Squash and Racketball. When playing Squash and/or Racketball, we ask that all students wear suitable eye protection.
SWIMMING
We ask that students wear goggles during their lessons and extra-curricular activities.
AT ALL SPORTING EVENTS PLEASE DO:
Show respect for officials and other players
Show encouragement with your support
Be courteous to all
Applaud good play
Respect the facilities and equipment
Verbally support in a proactive manner
Remember that winning is not everything
Enjoy supporting and being part of the fixture/competition
HOUSE EVENTS
We have a vibrant House system here at AGS. It is the DNA of the School and its success ensures a real sense of community. Students experience a sense of camaraderie and competition, whilst providing an opportunity for students from different year groups to work together within the School.
Each year, students represent their House with pride in competition for the prestigious Watson and Brodie Trophies. The finals are fiercely contested and are often the highlight of the School calendar. They are remembered with fondness by Old Aylesburians long after leaving AGS.
The Brodie Trophy was introduced in 1939, in memory of Palmer Brodie, a popular member of staff, in which students compete in a series of sporting events including Athletics, Badminton, Chess, CrossCountry, Cricket, Hockey, Football, Netball, Rugby, Squash, Swimming and Tennis.
The Watson Trophy was introduced by Colonel F.W. Watson, a long standing governor and friend to the School, and is awarded for artistic pursuits.
All competitions encompass every student, providing opportunities to compete and benefit from the positive virtues of sporting competition.
Over the year, we intend to run the following House events:
ATHLETICS CROSS COUNTRY SQUASH
BADMINTON
BASKETBALL FOOTBALL SWIMMING
RUGBY
TENNIS
Our six Heads of House will help to coordinate the students, along with their Tutors and the PE and Sport Team.
SPORT COLOURS
All students have the opportunity to earn Colours, Honours or Learning Honours at the end of each term. These rewards and recognitions are designed to encourage, recognise and reward commitment and excellence to School learning, School sport, School music, School drama and other extracurricular activities.
Colours are awarded for commitment and excellence to School sporting teams and individuals. Commitment, the primary criterion for School Colours award, includes commitment to training and practice as well as to performance and fixtures. Excellence is considered in terms of performance level within a team or as an individual and includes excellence in attitude on the pitch or court, in matches or other performances.
Staff who lead teams are invited to make nominations of students to be considered for the awards. A committee of staff, led by a member of the Senior Leadership Team, then meets to look at the nominations and to ensure parity of awards to previous years and across activities.
Full Colours may be achieved in the upper year of a section even if half was not awarded in the previous year on the following provisos:
That commitment has been over two years, and performance has been excellent (exceptional) in the second year
In some circumstances where two years of playing is not an opportunity within a section at AGS (ie Handball, Athletics), Full Colours may be awar performance has been really exceptional.

SUPPORT FOR SPORT
Our Sport and PE programme is constantly evolving and we are always looking for ways to develop and improve our sporting provision at AGS. Our aim is to give as many students as possible the opportunity to be active and the chance to represent the School. Both participation and performance are important aims of our vision.
We are always open to ideas and welcome suggestions. Your contributions and support could include:
Development of bespoke coaching programmes to further increase participation across new sporting activities
Providing transport to away fixtures, on the rare occasion that we need help with lifts
Assisting with refereeing or umpiring roles representing the School.
Sponsoring a kit, equipment or an event. This is open to all and is a great way of both supporting the School and building your business and brand awareness.
There is an opportunity for your company to provide sponsorship on specific team kits, or contribute towards a sport provision alongside another company.
We are so proud of our School Crest and having your brand name on our School kits offers you first class coverage across all forms of media and of course, your brand becomes associated with our School and the life enriching opportunities we offer.

SPORTS WEBSITE
We will continue to inform students of the relevant details associated with fixtures, but we are aware that sometimes these details do not make it home. We have dedicated Google Classrooms and notice boards in the Sports Hall and the Main Corridor where we publish teamsheets and notices.
In addition we have a vibrant AGS Sport website, where we publish our fixtures and associated details. By accessing the information here, you will be able to see a calendar of our fixtures, results, staff details, locations of the fixtures, associated timings and relevant contact details.
We aim to organise fixtures with as much notice as possible, but due to the nature of the current climate and our participation in various competitions, sometimes details are finalised closer to the fixture. Please can students and parents assume they are involved in the fixture, unless told otherwise.
