Border history reborn IT has been at a Border Bike Fest, but it’s coming back better than ever. ORIGINALITY can mean everything in a motorcycle restoration project. According to David Arnold, it’s all about how fussy you are - and he’s proving to be just that when it comes to restoring his 1904 Relay. The bike was made by Blacklock and Fuller in Albury, as David discovered after receiving the bike as nothing more than a motor and part of the frame. He began to dig into the archives and found a photo that represented the bike, with Al Fuller, the original builder, aboard. The photo showed a small tag on the front of the frame, which was also present on the bike, and proved the bike was made in Albury. As an ex-employee of Blacklocks, this made the project much more worthwhile for David. He said this style of bike was relatively common in Australia, sold to dealers as kits, but many weren’t able to be identified. “There are a lot of these bikes up and running, but the owners don’t know who made them,� David explained. “But this one had the tag on it - without the tag it could have been any number of veteran bikes.� And then the work began. Finding parts proved impossible, so it was a matter of handmaking whatever was needed, us-
