OUR Vietnam veterans have extended the hand of mateship to current-day warriors returning from Afghanistan. Vietnam Veterans Day is the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan on 18 August 1966, but it’s also a chance to remember and shake the hands of those involved in other battles of the Vietnam war, and those who are fighting for us today. Murray Border Association Vietnam Veterans president Gary Treeve was one of the speakers at the Albury Vietnam Veterans Day service at the SS&A Club on Sunday. He spoke to the crowd of 200, a walking reminder of the importance of saying a simple thankyou to our troops. “I said ‘when you see these guys come back from Afghanistan, shake their hand and don’t treat them like we were treated when we got home’,” Mr Treeve said. “These guys are doing it tough and we just want to embrace them and say ‘welcome home guys, well done.’ It makes so much difference, just that reassurance they’re not forgotten about, and when it comes from another veteran it means so much to them. They look at us as the older vets and see what we went through. “Some of the guys coming back from Afghanistan are suffering from PTSD. They have firstclass counselling and get looked after much better than we did, but we still need to support them. “It’s pretty traumatic over there, particularly with IEDs and seeing their mates getting blown up. A lot of our guys have lost limbs or been blinded, or came out very disfigured, and there’s 40 that have been killed.” Mr Treeve said the turn-out was the best yet thanks to all involved, including the 85 Transport unit which had been planning a reunion for the past two years. “They played a very significant role in Vietnam,” Mr Treeve said. “Without the transport and supplies, the other guys don’t survive, they all rely on each other.” To open the evening, 18 candles were lit for the 18 local soldiers who died in the Vietnam war, though numbers of those who committed suicide once back home are unknown. “When we came home, the counsellors around at the time didn’t understand because it had been

but for some of them it was the quickest. “Because the Vietnam vets had such a bad time when they came home, we don’t want a repeat of that.” Army Logistic Training Centre commander Colonel Duncan Polich also gave an inspiring speech on the night, reiterating the importance of days like Vietnam Veterans Day - “to commemorate death and fight like hell for the living.”

real war,’ but now they see the statistics of it, they regret ever saying that. “A lot of soldiers tried to drink their sorrows and hide - they wouldn’t come out on Anzac Day, never admitted they were in Vietnam, and a large number committed suicide, probably more than double that were killed in Vietnam. “They thought it was the best way out, so they didn’t have to go to sleep with all these nightmares and flashbacks. Roadworks to combat growth

Wodonga Dog Rescue fund-raising co-ordinator Allana Adrian plays with Mavis, whose life has been saved by the WDR.

Facebook saves dog By KRYSTEN MANUEL AS much as we love our pets, we generally don’t give them Facebook pages – but Mavis the staffordshire terrier was an exception, and it saved her life. “When Mavis first came into the pound, she presented with a massive lump on the back of her and originally we even thought she was a boy, Wodonga Dog Rescue fund-raising co-ordinator Allana Adrian said. “It was malignant and it had just been left to grow – it should have been taken off a long time before it got to that stage. “So after her time at the

pound when her owner didn’t claim her, we adopted her and made a Facebook page to help us get funds and to pay for her operation, and also to create awareness. “The page, It’s All About Mavis’ helped us get help from the community to pay for her operation – it was $800. Today, Mavis is an exceptionally happy, healthy dog with excellent promise for re-housing thanks to the selfless and tireless work of the Wodonga Dog Rescue (WDR). On 31 August between 10am and 2pm, WDR are having an adoption day with the help of

Melrose Vets. Free pet checks, pet photography, a barbecue lunch and lucky dips are also available on the day, with all proceeds going towards the invaluable work of WDR. “We’re having an adoption day because we have a lot of dogs in rescue at the moment, Ms Adrian said. “All our foster carers are full and we have some dogs currently living at the pound because we don’t have enough foster carers. It’s at the stage where if we don’t do some adoptions we will have to put some down, space is limited.

THE calling of tenders for redevelopment works in Havelock Street, Wodonga, will begin an exciting new stage in Wodonga’s growth. Construction and design improvements are expected to result in significant improvements to traffic flow between Havelock and Lawrence streets. Planning and infrastructure director Leon Schultz said the works would help support the increased traffic due to major redevelopments around the Havelock and Reid Street area. “We have notified residents and businesses about the tender being advertised so they know well in advance that there will be construction works happening, Mr Schultz said. “While there may be some short-term inconvenience, the result will be a significant improvement to the way our traffic and pedestrians can move around our growing city. “The improvements at the intersection of Lawrence and Havelock streets will also improve safety, which has been a concern with many residents for a long period. The project tender is open for a period of three weeks and is expected to be awarded at the October council meeting, with works to start shortly afterwards. Mr Schultz said the Havelock Street works would be enhanced by major improvements to take place in Elgin Boulevard later this financial year. “We are currently working on designs for the realignment of Elgin Boulevard and will work closely with businesses and the community on this exciting and important project for our city, he said.

“...TO commemorate death and fight like hell for the living, are the words of Army Logistic Training Centre commander Colonel Duncan Polich on the reason for Vietnam Veterans Day – and they couldn’t ring more true. The suicide statistics for returning soldiers from Vietnam are believed to be double the deaths as a direct result of the war – a shocking and unnecessary reality that seems hard for us to fathom these days. Most of us will never see war first-hand. We will never witness the bloodshed, never suffer from flashbacks or nightmares. And although our troops are given the top medical attention required, a simple shake of the hand can still mean the world of difference. For those of us not directly involved with the defence force, this is one simple but imperative way we ‘fight for the living.’ Murray Border Association Vietnam Veterans president Gary Treeve reminded us in this week’s front page story of what can happen when the thankyou’ is lost in politics – shame, addiction and death. So when you have the pleasure of meeting someone who served overseas, extend your hand and your thanks – they deserve it.

Yoga and karma DISCOUNT By KRYSTEN MANUEL

BRONWYN Ruitenberg is the embodiment of karma yoga. Karma yoga is often defined as a yoga of selfless (altruistic) service. Ms Ruitenberg achieves this almost daily with her classes that focus on not only improving people’s physical and spiritual being, but donating significantly to a different charity every month. “At least 30 per cent of everything that comes in goes to a charity,” Ms Ruitenberg said. “I have a list in the studio so people can nominate any charities they like, and I’m just working my way through. If we start to run out I tell everyone to write some more down.” Ms Ruitenberg said charities chosen are those close to the hearts of both herself and the members of the yoga group. The first charity chosen was The Mercy Hospital as Ms Ruitenberg’s father-inlaw had just passed away there. “We picked Carevan because we thought that was a worthy cause,” Ms Ruitenberg said.

“Now we’re going through the list of people who can nominate. So we did the Give Me Five For Kids Appeal, at the moment we’re doing SIDS For Kids. “It was going to be monthly but then we had the school holidays and didn’t have as many people come in, so I spread that one out for two months so we could raise more money. It’s great to give but I want it to be worthwhile as well.” Ms Ruitenberg gave 80 per cent of all money that came in during the first month, amounting to $400. Give Me Five For Kids was next, receiving $175 plus donations. SIDS For Kids is the charity for August and is currently up to around $200. “Our aim is to be able to give $200 every time. If $200 is not 30 per cent, we usually just bump it to make the goal,” Ms Ruitenberg said. “The nice thing with some of the people who come and do yoga is they asked me to put out a charity jar, so sometimes people put extra into the donations jar if the cause is close to home for them, or they think it’s particularly worthwhile.” MS Ruitenberg was an environmental

officer for 20 years but always had a side passion for yoga and fitness. “When I was on maternity leave with my youngest, I decided I just wanted to do yoga,” she said. “I felt we were so blessed to have so much that I wanted to be able to share that with other people. I think when you’ve got it good, it’s your responsibility to share it. “I say to my children ‘it’s a privilege to have what we’ve got and then that’s our responsibility to share that with others who are less fortunate.’ “I was from a very generous family so I grew up with that philosophy and the yoga just amplified that. I believe in karma yoga or the yoga of service - what can you do for others to make the world a better place?” Aisha Flow Yoga 90-minute classes are on 6am Wednesday, 7.30pm Thursday and 9.30am Friday. $12 per class or packs of five for $55, packs of 10 for $100. Grease shapes up By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE team at Livid Productions are starting to get those familiar pre-show jitters, with just two months to go before the curtain rises on their much-anticipated show, Grease. Talented locals Aaron Bykerk and Diane Robinson won the roles of Danny and Sandy with their myriad of skills, experience and a deep love for the theatre. “We’re very excited but getting nervous,” Ms Robinson said. “It’s coming up quick, but everyone’s encouraging everyone else and luckily we’re in a very supportive group.” Ms Robinson has been singing since she just three years old and hasn’t turned back, having recently returned from Canberra where she studied a bachelor of music. Ms Robinson grew up singing in the St Matthew’s church choir and has performed in shows including 42nd Street and Dido and Aeneas. Mr Bykerk is a very familiar face around the Border music scene, having hosted the Albury Carols By Candlelight last year and performed in a variety of local shows, including Little Shop Of Horrors, Jesus Christ Superstar, Miss Saigon, Spamalot and most recently Spelling Bee. “I started when I was 13 with Albury Wodonga Theatre Company and I’ve been singing since I was about 10,” Mr Bykerk said. “I love the fact that I can be someone else on stage, to become a different person and

Families in street mix By KRYSTEN MANUEL ON Thursday 15 August, local supporters of traditional marriage gathered in QEII Square to celebrate National Marriage Day (NMD). The very same day a little girl, Edith Noordam, was born. Edie is the daughter of local woman Esther Noordam, and a generous sperm donor. Many of the NMD supporters that gathered in QEII are part of the Australian Family Association, and have modelled themselves on the French movement which saw over one million people turn out in support of natural marriage earlier in Paris this year. Families dressed in pink and blue and held posters and balloons stating ‘every child deserves a mother and a father.’ Similar events were seen in many centres around Australia last week to mark the anniversary of the 2004 bi-partisan amendment to federal marriage law. The amendment enshrined the traditional understanding that marriage is between one man and one woman and was passed with support of both sides of politics nine years ago. Local woman Kathleeen Horsfall spoke at the event, saying the lack of traditional marriage threatened families and culture. “Marriage revisionists seek to create motherless or fatherless homes ... what about children’s rights?” she said. “Who truly believes it is fair for a child to be denied that opportunity wherever possible? We risk creating a new ‘stolen generation’ - children whose history and future are under threat by people who think they have the right to come between a child and their biological parents.” In Edie’s case, her father’s donation was private, with much research being done both ways to give Edie the best chance of being both healthy and happy. Ms Noordam said she had no concerns that Edie might ‘miss out’ as a result of coming from

Wednesday, 21 August, 2013 Page 5

www.awnw.com.au

a non-traditional family, and had no intention of stopping Edie from finding out more about her father when the time came. “I don’t see any reason in the world why my newborn can’t be happy just having her mum with all her other fantastic role models around,” she said. “There’s no chance of divorce, there’s no custody battles that need to be fought. “It’s all well and good to say you can make a marriage last, but sometimes things don’t happen like that. I’m lucky, my parents have been together for 36 years, but that’s uncommon these days. You’d love to wish that for your child, but you get what comes to you and in this day and age you just don’t know. It’s different for everyone. “I have a child to a previous relationship and we get along really well, we have our routines and our rules, but in saying that, she has a lot of male influences that I prefer her to have around. She has grandfathers, uncles and close friends that are role models for her as well. “As far as Edie goes, she has all of the same role models too. “I’m the one who’s able to choose her outside influences so it’s up to me to make sure she has the best of both worlds and has all the right people come in and out of her life. “My daughter, even though she’s a donor child, still has the option to find out who her ‘father’ is - she has the right because he’s giving her that right when she’s old enough to know. One day she may want to do a family tree and find out her history and she’s absolutely more than welcome to do that.” Local Australian Family Association member Donalee Murphy said in a statement to NewsWeekly that the belief behind NMD is that strong marriages are the best antidote for poverty among women and children and the biggest contributor to successful economies.

Traditional marriage was celebrated by locals in QEII Square last Thursday.

THERE has always been some question surrounding the price of rescue dogs, with many people lacking the understanding of time, work and cost going into the animals at Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue. Di Ingrey at Todd’s Tasty Treats wants to clear up these questions on Wednesday 11 September at the Todd’s AWAR Furry Friends Party - a live 2AY broadcast from 1pm-4pm with giveaways, face-painting, plus colouring in, lucky dip and guessing competitions. A Natural Animal Solutions representative will be speaking

on the day, as well as All Natural veterinarian Dr Bruce Syme, who will be answering questions over the broadcast. “People complain about the amount of money they charge for people to take a dog because they think rescue dogs should be free, Ms Ingrey said. “They don’t realise the amount of money the rescuers put into it in rescuing the dogs for a start, plus all their vet bills, vaccinations and surgery if it’s needed. Representatives from AWAR will be using the example of Gracie to explain their position. Gracie is a kelpie who was dumped, heavily pregnant, on

the doorstep of AWAR. Gracie soon gave birth to nine healthy puppies, but the money and time needed to keep the family healthy has cost AWAR a great deal. “We will talk about Gracie and what’s involved with feeding the puppies, Ms Ingrey said. “The babies were so young that they had to supplement feed - nine was just too many for her. Todd’s Tasty Treats have a donation tin for AWAR in the shop as well as a bin for old sheets and towels if anyone would like to contribute.

Trailer ready to roll THE Beechworth Correctional Centre Community Team this week celebrated the arrival and official handover of their new trailer from representatives of Beechworth Rotary and the Beechworth and District Community Bank. The new tandem trailer with extra high sides and spring loaded rear ramp is a significant upgrade to the team’s old trailer and its limited capacity. Past President of Beechworth Rotary Kathryn Chivers said the need for a new trailer was originally mentioned in passing by a former inmate who commented that the old trailer was no longer suitable for heavy loads. Ms Chivers is a keen advocate for the Correctional Centre Community Team and the service they provide to the local community. “Without the team there would be many projects that simply would never

have been completed, she said. “We are lucky to have them. Team leader Derek Humphreys said although based in Beechworth, the team regularly travels to contribute to the communities of Myrtleford, Chiltern, Wodonga, Wangaratta, Wooragee, Yackandandah, Eldorado, Mt Beauty and other regional towns. “We have been involved in fire and flood recovery, maintaining local youth centres, neighbourhood centres, sports club and ground maintenance, senior citizen centre repairs and school landscaping and infrastructure development, he said. “We also collect, cut and split the firewood that is available to our local senior citizens at discounted rates and this trailer has enabled us to increase that capacity. “The new trailer is fantastic and has certainly made our lives and the ability

to help the community a lot easier. Mr Humphreys acknowledged the vital role Ms Chivers had played on behalf of Beechworth Rotary in securing the trailer funding. Ms Chivers said a new trailer was costed and the Beechworth Rotary Club was able to offer $1000 towards the total cost of the $3500 trailer, but the balance needed to be raised. She approached Beechworth and District Community Bank branch manager Gareth Kay and board chairman Jamie Horne to discuss their potential support. Mr Horne said it was an easy decision for the staff and board members to donate the $2500 shortfall. “It is the primary reason why we established the bank, to return our profits to financially assist local groups and projects such as the Beechworth Correctional Centre Community Team that have wide-reaching benefits, he said.

SINGERS young and old, first timers and veterans alike were given the chance to sing to an appreciative crowd at The Cube last weekend in the Albury Wodonga Theatre Company’s production of Broadway Unplugged. “Our idea was to have as much fun as we could with these songs and hopefully that filtered through to the audience, Broadway Unplugged co-director Joseph Thomsen said. “I’m very appreciative of everyone who gave up their time to be in the show. There were some wonderful veterans of the stage as well as some fresh faces who found some new fans in the audience. Mr Thomsen said the idea behind Broadway Unplugged was to take a selection of favourite songs from wellknown musicals along with some new songs and merge them into one production.

“We had fun on stage singing songs people already know and love without having the whole musical around them, he said. “We had Do Re Mi from The Sound of Music, I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables as well as some newer songs from musicals like Matilda, which are yet to come to Australia.

“We also had a couple of songs not from musicals but they sounded like they did. Albury Wodonga Theatre Company will once again be making audiences laugh in their upcoming production of Mother and Son in November at The Cube.

Social Seen A Highland fling thing, By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE fifth annual Amulet Vineyard Highland Games was another success, with organisers praising the stall-holders, competitors and crowd alike. “We were a bit down on our 1000 from last year, but considering the weather and what it was like even earlier that morning, we’re really happy with the crowd,” Amulet’s principal winemaker, Ben Clifton said. The event began with the Bendigo Pipe Band march, followed by Highland athlete auction, Scottish country dancing, the ’stoneput’ strong man competition, Glen Lachlan estate College of Arms sword fighting display, ’weight for height,’ ’binks stone carry,’ ’manhood stones’ and ’caber toss’ strong man competitions, haggis hurl and Guns and Hoses Challenge. “The Guns and Hoses is a fun challenge - CFA versus Vic Police,” Mr Clifton said. “It’s an obstacle course and there’s always a bit of cheating but it’s just good fun. “The police actually won the Guns and Hoses challenge for the first time in the history of the Highland Games. Everton Fire Brigade held the title since the inauguration three years ago, but the police did get the upper hand on the day.” And with Scottish-themed stalls from near and far, no one went hungry. Some keen games-goers even went as far as to say the pies from Gum Tree Pies Yackandandah were the best they’d ever eaten.

Look out for ‘milk fever’ THE sudden appearance of a large number of sick sheep can distress even the most experienced livestock producer. This is how an outbreak of hypocalcaemia (or milk fever) can first appear, and now is the time of year to expect it. Hypocalcaemia, commonly known as milk fever, is a deficiency of calcium in the blood. It usually occurs in mature, fat ewes during the last six weeks of pregnancy or the first 10 days after lambing, although other classes of sheep may also be affected. Hypocalcaemia often follows a stressful experience such as shearing, crutching, transporting, yarding, fasting or even a severe weather event. It usually occurs on rapidly grow-

ing pasture, lush pasture, green cereal crops, when feeding grain, or on pasture that has oxalate containing plants such as sorrel and soursob. Sheep affected by hypocalcaemia will initially stagger and have muscle tremors, after which the animal will become weak, slip into a coma and die. This may all occur quite rapidly within four to six hours. Usually, there is little abnormal to be seen on post-mortem in a sheep that has died from hypocalcaemia. Cases of hypocalcaemia are often confused with pregnancy toxaemia or sometimes twin lamb disease. Some notable differences between the two conditions are that hypocalcaemia has a rapid onset, affected sheep remain alert, death occurs quickly, a large number of cases

may occur at the one time, cases occur on lush feed rather than lack of feed, and a good response to the appropriate treatment is seen. Sheep affected with hypocalcaemia should be treated as a matter of urgency with calcium/magnesium solution (often known as ‘4 in 1’) given under the skin. Calcium/magnesium solution is readily available from a veterinary practice or stock agent. Cases may be prevented by adding a calcium supplement if feeding grain, or by giving dry roughage to sheep on lush feed. For further information, please contact your local veterinarian or DEPI animal health staff, or in NSW your Livestock Pest and Health Authority.

Know the signs in your sheep before hypocalcaemia (milk fever) sets in.

Schools locking up tight LAVINGTON Public School, Lavington East Public School and Springdale Heights Public School will receive security fences as part of the Schools Capital Works Program. The project will greatly improve safety and security at the schools during term time and especially during the holidays. The works are scheduled to be completed within the 2013/14 financial year, funding for the program was approved in the recent State Budget. In 2013/14, the NSW Government is providing more than $420 million in capital works funding to NSW public schools. This capital works funding will go towards eight new major building developments, the continuation of 22 major building projects, and numerous minor capital works projects. “The NSW Government is determined to provide the best learning environments possible in our schools and this means making the school grounds safe for students and staff,” Member for Albury, Greg Aplin said.

Families in the street mix From page 5 “Research shows that by every measure of human happiness, men, women and children are more fulfilled, healthy, educated, and financially and emotionally secure in a stable marriage,” it said. “Sadly, we recognise there will be some marriages which fail and we need to be there to support those families as much as possible. “But more often than not, marriage represents the best option for the majority.” Ms Noordam deemed the opinion ‘very closed,’ saying the heart of a marriage extends far beyond a piece of paper selectively given by others. “Being gay myself, at the end of the day, a marriage is a marriage regardless of the piece of paper,” she said. “De-facto relationships sometimes last forever and some people never get married. You have marriage between a man and a woman, marriage between two men or two women, it’s one of those things that you can’t judge by gender or anything else because you have to make a marriage work yourself. “Just be happy! If you want to do it the oldfashioned way, go right ahead, if it lasts - fantastic. It’s the same with gay couples. I know gay couples that have been together for 20 years and they’re still happy. They have their kids, their kids are happy and there’s nothing wrong with that.”

FRIDAY 23 August, Daffodil Day, is a national day of hope and an opportunity for individuals to contribute to a brighter, cancer-free future. One in every two Australians is diagnosed with cancer by the age 85 years. It’s a disease that doesn’t discriminate and stretches across all cultures and communities. By supporting Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day, the largest national fund-raising event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, you will give hope to the many lives affected by cancer; hope for better treatments, hope for more survivors, and hope for a cancer-free future. This Friday more than 10,000 volunteers are expected to staff over 1200 Daffodil Day sites across Australia as part of the Cancer Council vision - to minimise the threat of cancer for people in Australia through successful prevention, treatment and support. This year, Daffodil Day aims to raise over $8.25 million to fund the cancer control initiatives, prevention initiatives and patient support and research services of Cancer Council’s eight state and territory member organisations - like the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20. Bard’s parody an amazing romp THE most irreverent, side-splitting roller coaster ride though the entire Shakespearean catalogue is coming to the Albury Entertainment Centre this Thursday. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is a parody of the plays written by the famous playwright. Throughout the show each of Shakespeare’s plays are performed (in shortened form) and Old English is left behind in this fast-paced performance featuring improvisation, pop culture references and audience participation. The audience can expect Othello performed as a rap song, while Titus Andronicus becomes a cooking show. It also features the self-proclaimed world record for the shortest-ever performance of Hamlet, clocking in at 43 seconds (as well as the fastest performance of Hamlet backwards, at 42 seconds). The show was first performed in 1987 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and features three brave actors who act, alliterate and amaze in this hilarious romp through all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays. Damian Callinan is an award-winning stand-up comic, TV sketch show performer, broadcaster, actor and writer. He is best known to TV audiences for his roles on Skithouse, Before The Game and Comedy Slapdown as well as guest appearances on shows such as Spicks and Specks, Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala, The Great Debate and City Homicide. He has just completed a national tour

Nic English, Tim Overton and Damian Callinan bring you a performance not to be missed. of The Cave the Rave - A Comedy Dance Lesson, which saw him win the ABN Amro Foreign Exchange Award to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Damian has performed in four previous productions of The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare (Abridged) including two seasons at the Sydney Opera House. Callinan was also in the original production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), will be joined by actors Nic English and Tim Overton as they don exquisitely intricate costumes in this bold and irreverent

jaunt through the Shakespearean canon. While those who are familiar with Shakespeare will relish the in-jokes, this is also the ideal production for those with Shakespeare allergies or who have been life-long sufferers of Shakespeare deprivation. “I love directing comedies and this one’s an absolute cracker,” director Adam Cook said. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is on at the Albury Entertainment Centre, Thursday 22 August at 7.30pm. Adult $45, concession $42. Call (02) 6043 5610 for inquiries.

Medium fits in By KRYSTEN MANUEL

HAVE you ever wondered what it’s like to be a medium? How do they speak to the dead? How did their connection start? How do they deal with living a life that breathes grief and loss. Charmaine Wilson is an internationally recognised psychic medium, and first series winner of Seven Network’s show The One. She is travelling around NSW on her Helping Hearts Heal Tour to guide those affected by the loss of a loved one through their grief, and enable them to see the light on the other side. Ms Wilson took some time out of her busy touring schedule to talk to NewsWeekly about life, death, grief and being the middle-man between the living and the dead. NW: How did you find out you were a medium? CW: I went through a really bad period in 1999. I’d made a lot of dumb decisions with addiction and that sort of thing, and for that reason my two boys were taken off me and given to their dad and I went into nervous breakdown mode. I think the reason that happened was I’d had so much grief beforehand I really hadn’t dealt with it. It was grief upon grief upon grief after losing my brother, my daughter, my dad, a whole lot of people. I’ve lost probably about 100 people I was close to. During this stage, I started to hear voices and I thought ‘great, now I’m nuts.’ One day, I was working at an air force base and I started to hear the voices as I was serving a customer and I started to relay to the customer what I was hearing. It turned out it was his mother who had passed away in spirit. Once that started, word got around the air force base that the smoko girl was a bit strange and that’s really how I learnt to be a medium. NW: How did you learn to accept your gift? CW: The first three years was a terrible process, I didn’t like it at all. It was very hard to understand what was going on, it was a very difficult time, but once I got into it it’s been a good thing. I’ve gotten past the point of grieving

You may recognise this face off the Seven Network show The One. Charmaine Wilson is a psychic medium, coming to Albury for one night only. for my own people and now I wear other people’s grief. It really is quite a depressing thing. I don’t get depressed about it but it does have to come out somewhere - when I’m at home I find exercise helps. NW: How do you speak to the dead? CW: I hear them and receive messages off them. I can ask questions, but it’s all about them. The best way to describe it is there’s a television in your head and the sound’s a bit distorted. You feel it, you hear it, you see it and it’s only for the time you’re talking to that spirit and you change over to the next spirit. I know that when I’m in medium mode, everything I hear, see and feel belongs to the person I’m talking to. Sometimes they show what they look like, some describe how they’re feeling by making you hear how they feel, some spirits show you with smell. And of course, they let you feel how they died. I have come across people who have been murdered, and suicide. NW: What do you say to people who can’t seem to get over or deal with the loss of a loved one? CW: What I actually put to them is to firstly reverse roles - ’would you like to

Box office

look down and see your loved one stopping their life simply because you are where you’re meant to be?’ The hardest thing is for people to have acceptance, especially in the case of a child or a tragic accident. They have all these ‘if onlys’ and there’s no sense in it. I say every show, ‘don’t let their death make you bitter, make their life inspire you.’ So many people close their hearts after death and other people miss out then as well. NW: What can the Border expect if they go to one of your shows? CW: I’m on stage and I’m drawn to certain people. Then I do as many communications as I can. It sounds morbid but the spirits can be quite funny. There was one spirit in Ballina and he bent over in front of me, pulled his pants down and he had a tattoo on his butt. He said to me ‘my mum never knew I had this until I died.’ So I said that to his mum and she said ‘you’re right! It was Marvin the Martian.’ Charmaine Wilson will be at the Albury Entertainment Centre on Thursday, 29 August. Call (02) 6043 5610 for details.

Head in clouds, heart on Earth Elysium (MA) Starring: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley THE mentalist behind 2009 stunner ’District 9’ has done it again. This time, director-to-watch Neill Blomkamp, still in his thirties, has brought Matt Damon and five times his previous budget into the mix. And he’s produced an instant classic. Elysium is the film of the year so far, with something for everyone cracking CGI, deep characters, an enjoyable script, and action aplenty - but most of all an idea or two. District 9 took aim at apartheid; Elysium lines up on the First World’s disregard of refugees. The point is made with sledgehammer subtlety. Earth is a global slum of poverty, misery and ill-health. Elysium is a space refuge where the elite live out a life of near-heavenly perfection. Even death has become almost optional. Like a giant moon, Elysium fills the heavens of Earth and is a daily taunt to the have-not groundhogs below.

Damon’s character, an ex-con and factory worker, needs to board a leaky spaceboat and find his way to Elysium for medical treatment after an industrial accident. To give away any more is to spoil the plot, but rest assured that this actioner with ideas will take you into the stratosphere.

It’s a film that couldn’t be more topical in Australia at the moment, with spooky parallels to our federal election campaign and asylum seeker debate. Director Blomkamp has produced a stunning dystopian vision, with some serious sci-fi chops. If you don’t like this one, give the movies away. - Jason Beck

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

Modern marvel THIS striking red brick home is perfect for a family that appreciates space, pristine views and all things modern. Set on an impressive 1944 square metre block in the enviable Blue Bonnet estate, 3 Peregrine Place is just four years old, though hours of labour has clearly gone into its surrounding land. Rock retaining walls and established garden beds filled with low-maintenance, native inspired plants frame this already attractive house, and watering them should be no problem thanks to a water tank cleverly disguised out the back. Walking through the front door, you will find the main bedroom to the left and formal lounge to the right. The main bedroom is large and cleverly finished with black carpet and feature wall, creating an eye-catching, modern effect. To every woman’s delight, a spacious walk-in robe also features, with a stylish, neutrally-

4

2

toned ensuite housing a luxuriously large shower. The formal lounge is the perfect place to relax with friends with a breathtaking 180-degree view out to Leneva and surrounding hills. The tiled hallway leads through the heart of the home, past the study and through the cleverly placed, windowed internal door so occupants have the option of segregating one end of the house - perfect for a little peace and quiet. Ducted heating and cooling also feature throughout the house. At the heart of the house is the kitchen and living area - a large, tiled, light-filled space with classy downlights and a particularly fetching feature light over the kitchen island. The kitchen offers plenty of bench space, a corner pantry and, of course, quality appliances.

Just to the side of this area, a sliding door confines three bedrooms, the bathroom and laundry. The spacious bedrooms are all fitted with walk-in robes and large windows, and the laundry offers a great deal of storage in addition to a long counter space. The main bathroom was cleverly thought out, with powder room, toilet and shower/bath area all conveniently central but separate and beautifully appointed with unique timber vanities. The last room of 3 Peregrine Place is the tiled rumpus room - though surely it would make an excellent man cave. Outside has an undercover, concrete floor entertainment area looking out to the same beautiful view as the formal lounge. The backyard is particularly large and has been developed with rock retainers and brick steps leading towards a garden shed.

Scots together By KRYSTEN MANUEL

Luke Reynolds came in first overall, now boasting two Amulet Highland Games titles under his belt.

HIGHLAND competitors battled strong winds at the fifth annual Amulet Highland Games on Sunday, though it didn’t seem to affect their results. Ancient events including the stoneput, caber toss, weight for height, manhood stones and binks stones brought the highest quality athletes to the arena. “It’s the best field of athletes we’ve had at our highland games so far, Amulet’s principal winemaker Ben Clifton said. Victoria was represented by Scott Martin, an Australian multi-Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist for discus and bronze in shotput. James Grahame, a crowd favourite from Edinburgh Scotland has been a stalwart at Amulet and only just returned to Australia after spending weeks competing in the SHGA games circuit in Scotland. South Australia’s hopes were pinned on Jordan Steffens of Adelaide, who represented Australia in Olympic weightlifting and is currently aiming for the 2014 Commonwealth Games team. 2010 Highland Games champion Luke Reynolds of New South Wales was hoping to add a second title to his name. He is regarded as one of the best strongmen in Australia, and has competed internationally in both Strongman and Highland Games. Tim O’Shea of Queensland is a strongman, power lifter and Highland Games athlete, and was recently selected as part of a representative team travelling to Argentina for Power. But there can be only one winner ... “The stoneput is like a big shotput, except with a 70-pound lump of rock, Mr Clifton said. This event was taken out by Luke Reynolds with a distance of 6ft and 3/4 inches – an Amulet Games record. Second was Scott Martin followed by Tim O’Shea in third. The weight for height is an event where competitors launch a 56 pound weight up and over an ever increasing bar. The winner is judged on height cleared. First was Scott Martin with a height of 14 ft, followed by Luke Reynolds and Jordan Steffens in third. The caber toss was the next event, with competitors asked to launch a long wooden pole into the air with the aim of making it flip and gain as much distance as possible. “We have several cabers here at Amulet, Mr Clifton said.

“There’s the qualifying caber which is the smallest at 17-feet long but it only weighs 42 kilos, then there’s the challenge caber at 16-feet long but weighing 62 kilos, so it’s much harder to toss. “They all turned the qualifying caber but Luke was the only one able to turn the challenge caber. Gold went to Luke Reynolds, followed by Scott Martin and James Grahame. The Amulet stones is an event where five stones must be lifted onto an upturned barrel and timed. The five stone weights included 95 kg, 113 kg, 119 kg, 149 kg and 174 kg. “They’re just big rocks I plucked out of the paddock, Mr Clifton said. Again, Luke Reynolds was named champion, having loaded four stones in 1.05 minutes, followed by Scott Martin and Jordan Steffens who both lifted three stones. The final event was the binks stones – two rocks with handles in them competitors must lift and carry as far as they can. The rocks were 106 kg and 155 kg. Again, Luke Reynolds took out the title with a distance of 31 ft and 2.5 inches, followed by

James Graham and Jordan Steffens. The overall winner was Luke Reynolds, followed by Scott Martin and Jordan Steffens. “Luke holds two titles of the Amulet games, as does Craig Reid who was running the games, Mr Clifton said. “Craig might have to challenge the Amulet Games one more time before retirement!

Scott Martin took out the height for weight event at the Highland Games with a height of 14 ft.

O&M FOOTY2013 At last, the IT’S here, the final round of home and away football for the 2013 Ovens and Murray season. For some it’s the last game for the year, and sadly for others it will be the last game of a career. This round however is not about endings, it’s all about what lies ahead. Country football’s biggest rivals, Yarrawonga and Albury will face off at the Albury Sportsground this Saturday for the all important minor premiership. Hard to believe it after the past four grand final showdowns in a row ... but this could be the biggest match ever! It’s a big statement I agree, but I think for the first time in the last five years no side goes into this game more fancied than the other. When the two teams met at the J.C. Lowe earlier in the year, a gallant Albury fell short by just 10 points. Many were surprised by the competitiveness of the Tigers that day as many expected a Pigeons victory. Since that very game, both teams have continued to impress, but none more than the yellow and black. The loss of Daly, Koehler and co at the conclusion of last season had

Albury’s co-captain Luke Daly has had a stand-out season in front of goals. Daly has become one of the premier small forwards of the competition and the Tigers will be hoping he turns in another top performance this Saturday to help them claim the minor premiership.

many suggesting an end of an era was nigh. The Tigers set out to recruit a ruckman in Luke Wells, and former AFL footballer Dean Polo to complement Chris Hyde and Joel Mackie and ensure they would still be among the best mid-fielders in the league. That they are; however the real ace in the Tigers’ pack so far has been the increased pace right around the ground. Hampton, O’Connell, Mitchell, Blisset and Robinson are just a few of the younger brigade that have relished the opportunity to step up. This youthful combination has delivered a real injection of speed to the side. Co-coach Daniel Maher’s return after a long-term injury last year has also given their defence a timely shot in the arm. Maher runs hard through the lines and his near-perfect disposal allows his forwards many scoring opportunities. Small forward Luke Daly is enjoying a very fruitful year in front of goals, while the ever-consistent Charles Gaylard and Luke Packer continue to be just that. For Yarrawonga, mid-fielders
