Indi on polls map

Independent candidate for Indi Cathy McGowan.

By DANNY BUTTLER INDEPENDENT candidate Cathy McGowan believes Indi voters can’t be bought by a pork barrelling campaign. With Ms McGowan threatening to steal the “safe” Liberal seat from incumbent Sophie Mirabella, Coalition forces are being marshalled for a final push to victory. Big name politicians have been flown into the area to announce big dollar election promises as the battle for the North East seat enters its end game. But the Indigo Valley Independent believes the resources being thrown at the electorate by the Liberals are only reinforcing her message that a nonaligned candidate can make a genuine difference. “It absolutely shows that we are putting Indi on the map,”

she said. “This is exactly what happens when you are an Independent. It is already good and will only get better.” “People will pay attention to us, individual people’s votes will become very important, people will be listened to ... this is just a taste of what will happen if I get elected.” Ms Mirabella, who has held the seat for the Liberals since 2001, enjoys a margin of just under 10 per cent, with a record field of 10 candidates contesting the seat. But it is the Indigo Valley’s Ms McGowan who is the likeliest challenger for a seat held by conservative parties since 1931. “I’m certainly getting a great response from people and I am very happy with how the campaign is going,” she said.

Politics and international relations lecturer at La Trobe University Dr Benjamin Habib said a good indicator of a seat’s vulnerability was the presence of high profile politicians. “When you see Barnaby Joyce and Joe Hockey, it shows the Liberals are concerned about retaining Indi,” Dr Habib said. He said the impressive longterm strategy run by Ms McGowan is one reason Liberal Party backroom operators are throwing assets at the usually safe coalition seat. “Cathy McGowan has run a clever campaign starting out with the Voice For Indi campaign,” Dr Habib said. “But the fact is that it is a safe seat and Sophie will probably win, but probably with a reduced margin.”

Old-time love affair

Editorial Living the marriage dream

By KRYSTEN MANUEL

WE LIVE in a day and age where divorce and heartbreak are the norm, where people meet online and express themselves with emoticons. But every now and then you hear a love story that paints a picture worthy of a classic romance film. Such is the meeting of John Krautz and Gwendoline Fulford. Gwen was just 17 years old when she met John in 1953 - the year Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was released, and Sir Robert Menzies was Prime Minister. After a chance meeting through a family member, Mr Krautz began a chase that would involve three weeks of leaning up against his motorcycle and waiting patiently outside the maids’ quarters of the Albury Base Hospital. “From the first time they met, Dad used to ride his motorbike out and wait in front of the maids’ quarters, and after three weeks Mum finally said she’d go out with him, Mr and Mrs Krautz’s daughter Sharon Timmermans said. “She said she was a bit frightened because he was older and on a bike - he was one of those boys her mum always told her to be careful of. But after three weeks she said she’d go out with him and they’ve been together ever since. Tomorrow, Mr and Mrs Krautz will celebrate 60 years of marriage and have even received a congratulatory letter from the Queen, though the most meaningful letter Mrs Krautz will receive is from her husband, and reads as follows. “To my darling wife Gwen, 60 beautiful years together, two daughters, two great son-in-laws five grandchildren and one great grandchild. All these beautiful years spent as a family. Christmases, birthdays and marriages, we had a beautiful journey. We won’t have to go another 60 as we got the first one spot-on. Very few tears and a lot of love and laughter.

MARRIAGE is a hot topic at the moment, especially with the election looming ahead. Last week, NewsWeekly published a story on National Marriage Day, with one group supporting only ‘traditional marriage,’ and another woman’s response - supporting all types of marriage. This week, we published a heart-warming story about a couple, John and Gwen Krautz, who have been married 60 years and raised a close-knit, loving family. Whether you’re for or against gay marriage, one fact remains certain on the marriage front - that couples like Mr and Mrs Krautz are becoming rarer and rarer. People still seem to want the fairytale romance, to marry happily ‘until death do you part,’ but in reality most will never achieve it. So what is the secret formula for a lasting and happy marriage? Mr and Mrs Krautz have found success through a mutual respect and solid friendship, and “knowing the grass isn’t always greener. Jo and Josefine Wowk celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary back in July and owe their success to a constant striving to stick together through war and a complicated immigration to Australia, and the better times when they travelled the world. George and Violet Kennedy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in May and although they lived through a great deal of tragedy, it didn’t tear them apart. “We took our vows seriously, through the good and the bad times, Mrs Kennedy said. The common thread on all three accounts is commitment, something in the grasp of any couple - gay, straight or otherwise.

60 happy years of life and love have gone by since the marriage of John and Gwen Krautz. Love you forever and a day. I’ll slip down to town now, I won’t be long. What’s that? Have I got my wallet? Have I got my keys? Have I got my hanky? And have I got my glasses? See you soon. Mr Krautz is very well-known around the Border, having worked at Nolan Brothers sports store for 22 years, owned a cleaning business and participated in several sports including tennis, football, tenpin bowling and squash. But the couple’s real passion is camping. “Dad does a lot of fly fishing and mum goes in the boat when they can, Mrs Timmermans said. “They really love camping. We go up to a property near Hay every year and have been doing so since I was a child - I’m 56 now. “When my Dad and Mum got time off work we’d go away for three or four weeks. As soon as

they finished work we were in the car and it was a non-stop drive until we got there so we could catch as many fish as we could. There was no bag limit back then and we used to take them into the local ice making factory and they’d freeze them until we were ready to take them home. It was a mad dash to get them home and into the freezer. “We started off in tents, Sandra and I were in tents in the trailer and they’d sleep in the back of the car. It was very much the dark ages compared to now. Of course now they have the caravan. So what is the secret to a long and happy marriage? What ingredients are being missed in later generations? “We give and take, we have each other, Mrs Krautz said. “He’s my better half, I’ve always said that. The proof is in the pudding, with both the Krautz children celebrating long and happy marriages. Mrs Timmermans has been married 38 years and her older sister Sandra making 40 years. “Mum and Dad always conveyed to us that you had to have a friendship and respect, and know the grass isn’t always greener, Mrs Timmermans said. “They always told us the lust only lasts two or three years and after that if you haven’t got a friendship, you haven’t got anything at all. Mr Krautz is currently in hospital battling pneumonia with his wife by his side day and night, as she has been for 60 years.

Heavy vehicle crash

One of the carpet pythons seized by the DEPI.

By KRYSTEN MANUEL

Wildlife seized OVER a dozen animals, including threatened species, have been seized in the last three months by Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) wildlife officers, in conjunction with Victoria Police. Six search warrants were released under the Wildlife Act 1975 as part of investigations into the illegal possession of wildlife in the Hume Region. DEPI’s Senior Compliance Officer, Leigh Murray, said species seized include five carpet (threatened species) and spotted pythons, two pink cockatoos, one red-tailed black cockatoo, three water dragons and one superb parrot (threatened species). “Some of the offenders have taken the wildlife from the wild or have obtained it illegally through other means, he said. “Others have obtained wildlife licences, then purchased their wildlife,

but allowed their licence to expire while still retaining possession of the wildlife. Mr Murray said it was a timely reminder as all wildlife licences needed to be renewed by the end of September. “All current private wildlife licences issued under the Wildlife Regulations 2002 remain valid until they expire on 30 September 2013, he said. “Information regarding renewal of private wildlife licences under the Wildlife Regulations 2013 will be sent to licence holders this month. “DEPI officers will be conducting licence checks, and following up with any people suspected of being in possession of wildlife illegally. If people change their residential address, they must notify DEPI of this within 10 business days of moving. “We urge all wildlife owners to make

sure they get their licence up-to-date and that they adhere to the licence conditions. The regulations and licences are to ensure wild populations of native species are protected. “Wildlife officers will be carrying out random and targeted inspections to monitor captive bred wildlife to ensure no illegal trade of wildlife from wild populations. While doing inspections, officers will ensure housing conditions of the wildlife are appropriate. If people are aware of wildlife that has been taken or suspected of being taken from wild populations, please report this to DEPI’s customer service centre on 136186. Information can be provided anonymously, however, officers may need details to follow up on the initial report. All information is treated confidentiality.

A 59-YEAR-OLD Carrum Downs man has died at the Albury Base Hospital, following a heavy vehicle accident on Friday. The crash occurred at around 5.30pm, when Phillip Jackson was driving a fully laden B-double and heading south on the Hume Highway. Police said the vehicle appeared to have left the road about one kilometre north of the New South Wales-Victorian border and went down a slight embankment. The vehicle then continued across a service road and through a large fence, before the entire truck came to a stop semi-submerged in a large dam.

Police from Albury Local Area Command and several members of the public arrived soon after the crash and attempted to assist Mr Jackson. Two police officers and members of the public entered the dam and removed Mr Jackson from his vehicle unconscious, then took him to the dam’s bank where attempts were made to resuscitate him. Ambulance paramedics attended and conveyed Mr Jackson to Albury Base Hospital, where he died on Saturday. Police from Albury Local Area Command are investigating the incident and will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Albury boy hits top gear CUTTING his journalistic and sporting teeth in and around Albury, Brett Murray was considered a young man in a hurry. So it’s fitting that his life now pretty much revolves around speed. As principal of BAM Media, a company name he registered in his teens, Brett is considered a mover and shaker of the motorsports scene in Australia and beyond. A few weeks back, when the V8 Supercars announced its new enduro championship series, Murray and his BAM Media colleagues were all over it, as they are for a lot of motorsport initiatives here and in the United States. The BAM Group now employs 18 full-time people and several part-time casual contractors on the Gold Coast, in Melbourne and Charlotte in North Carolina. As well as BAM Media, they look after BAM TV, BAM Tours, BAM North America and internet sites Speedcafe.com, Speedcafe.co.nz and ozspeedshop.com His clients include the likes of Jack Daniel’s, Castrol, Pirtek, Armor All, Bisley, Irwin Tools, Toshiba, Norton, Coates Hire, Orrcon Steel, Vodafone and Crimesafe. The boy born on the third floor of the Mercy Hospital in Albury in December 1967, the son of Marlene and Allen Murray, is doing pretty well for himself. His mum Marlene (Read) grew up in Tangambalanga and Allen was part of the Murray clan from West Albury. Brett’s grandfather Russell was a milkman with Haberfield’s for over 40 years and his Dad worked for the Dalgety Woolstores in Young Street. Brett attended Lavington East Primary School from Prep through to Grade 6, where he was school captain

Brett Murray, wife Trudi and son Maximilian still get back to Albury occasionally. They are pictured at the old Lavington oval, the scene of many of Brett’s junior sporting triumphs. in his final year. He then attended Murray High School, where he was active in school life and a member of the student council from the first year. By Year 9 he was school council president - a posi-

tion usually reserved for Year 11 students and he remained there until leaving school midway through Year 11 in 1984. His entrepreneurial became evident back then, as Brett ran a private SP

book and he says he had both students and teachers as clients. “I made more money in my last two years of school than my first two years of work, he said.

“It helped that Parramatta and Carlton won five premierships between them in that time! “Although Parramatta lost the 1984 premiership - my first year of work and it cost me a fortune.

in the motorsport scene

Brett Murray with his first car - bought for $200 from a neighbour and sold for $220. “It’s one of only two cars I ever made money on,” he says. He is sporting an Albury Blues rugby league jumper sponsored by the old Garrison Hotel at Lavington. Brett had a love of all sports from an early age, with dad Allen playing the “outcast” sport of rugby league for the Albury Blues and Brett followed his lead. Brett was president of the Albury Junior Rugby League Association at 17 and established a fund-raising auction initiative, which provided enough money for the association to survive year on year.

He played Australian Football for North Albury and then Lavington and played his first senior trial game under Kenny Roberts for the Blues at the age of 15. Brett played in an Aussie Rules and rugby league grand final on back-toback days in under 15s - winning the league and losing the rules. In 1987 he was recruited as a “rookie” as part of the Australian American

Football team and toured the US and Europe. After the initial training camp in California he forced his way into the starting line-up. It was on this tour that he earned the nickname “Crusher” after applying a couple of massive hits on some opposition players. It is a handle that stuck and by which he is now known worldwide - sometimes not even answering to his own name when at a racetrack. It was a bit different to the childhood nickname of ‘Sheepy’ which Brett inherited from his father, who was known as “sheep” because of his curly hair and the fact that he worked at the wool stores. “I think the Purtells nick-named me ‘Little Sheep’ when I was running around kicking a ball at Greenfield Park while Dad was league training with the Blues. That all changed when I grew bigger than the Old Man. I just became ’Sheep’.” Brett played cricket for Lavington and was delighted to see at a club reunion a few years back that his last wicket stand of 11 runs with Bruce Kilpatrick still stood as a record for the colts. Given that the colts competition no longer exists, he figures he and ‘Killer’ are in the record books for good. “I was not much of a cricketer, but I loved the game and everyone that was associated with the Lavington club,” he concedes. Brett started as a cadet journalist at the age of 16 at the Wagga Daily Advertiser, after calling his first game of local football on radio 2KY in Albury at 14. He made his first appearance on the old AMV4 footy show to talk about junior rugby league at 12. He moved to the Border Mail a year later and found himself as acting sports editor for a time in 1988 when still only 29.

Straight Teeth - No Braces!

Brett Murray and team-mates celebrate after the 1982 under 15s Aussie Rules grand final for the Lavington Rangers. “We lost the game to the Wodonga Lions, but we couldn’t waste the champagne - nonalcoholic of course!” Brett had won the rugby league grand final at Tumbarumba the day before. The audacious teenager spat the dummy when the Border Mail decided to send someone else to the Seoul Olympics and he resigned that day. “Not before I had headed around to the Terminus Hotel to see a couple of my old teachers, Tom Doolan and Wayne Read, who had just decided to go into the pub business together,” he recalled. “I little while down the track I realised the pub game wasn’t for me

unless I owned it and we parted ways - they were probably more patient with me than they had to be when they taught me in the classroom. “I worked as a bouncer a couple of nights the week for $10 cash an hour for Mike Quinlivan at Maudies Wine Bar in Dean Street - I was living on $50 a week because I refused to go on the dole.” Continued on the next page

From page 5. Brett moved to the Gold Coast in 1989 to work as a rugby league reporter with the Gold Coast Bulletin and worked alongside league great Ken Irvine. He established BAM Media in 1991 and moved to a full-time role running the business in 1992. While at the Bulletin he started a motorsports column which ran until only recently, making him one of News Limited’s longest-serving columnists. Brett’s BAM Group played an active role in the Armor All Gold Coast 600 since its inception and took over the role of communications manager in 1998. It was voted best promoter in the IndyCar Series several times by drivers and officials. His efforts with the Gold Coast Indy attracted the attention of US billionaire Bruce McCaw, who employed Brett to run the media and marketing for this race teams out of Indianapolis. He was the PR manager for the Holden Australian Open Golf Championship at the Grand Golf Club on the Gold Coast in 2001 - regarded as one of the best events in the title’s history - and was brought in to help save the Gold Coast Marathon from extinction in 2002 and turned it around by 2003 - providing the foundation for the great event it is today. BAM was employed to “save” the Queensland 500 in 1999 after a disastrous debut in 1998 at Queensland Raceway and helped take the event from a $50,000 loss to a $450,000 profit in one year. In 2008, Brett moved back to the US to help Marcos Ambrose with the next step in his NASCAR career and established BAM North America in Charlotte North Carolina. Brett has lived on the Gold Coast for more than 20 years but still has a real affinity with Albury. “Albury, and Lavington in particular, will always be home for me,” he said. “I still have relatives in the area and some of my best mates that I grew up with and their families are still here. “My best mate Mark Eyers had his son Mitch play thirds for North Albury against Myrtleford in the opening round and we flew down for it. Speedcafe.com is his player sponsor. “I get a bigger buzz out of that stuff than being in the winner’s pit box at the Indy 500.” Brett has been in the pit box of the last two winners of the Indy 500 - Dan Wheldon and Dario Franchitti.

The Indy 500 is one of the biggest annual events in world sports - and tragically Wheldon was killed five months after his 2011 win in a race at Las Vegas, just a day before he was set to fly to Australia to join Brett for a V8 race on the Gold Coast. “I am grateful to have done some amazing things in my life, but nothing beats standing on the hill at Bunton Park having a cold beer and a hot pie on a winter’s day with Eyersy, Uncle Jep, Bobby, Strop, Armo, Boof and the rest of the boys watching the Hoppers go around.” Next year he will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the BAM brand with a major event on the Gold Coast, which will coincide with the launch of his biography.

Mentor and CSU academic Brett Biles takes students on their third BroSpeak session.

Speaking as brothers By KRYSTEN MANUEL ABORIGINAL high school boys in Albury are exploring who they are, where they came from and where they’re going thanks to the BroSpeak program. Run by the NSW Department of Education and Communities, Charles Sturt University (CSU) and local Aboriginal men from Albury-Wodonga, BroSpeak is a 10-week program that aims to give the boys a brighter future through a range of projects and topics covered. “One of the main things we’re aiming to get out of the program is to build self-confidence in the kids and form them to make better choices in life, mentor and CSU academic Brett Biles said. “School provides great security when you’re here, but when there’s no bells ringing or teachers telling you what to do,

quite often the kids make bad choices. We want them to understand that their actions will equal consequence and what that means for them and their future. “We start off by finding out who they are, where their Aboriginality comes from, what their culture’s about. For a lot of these boys they don’t even know what side their Aboriginality is on, they don’t understand their culture. “The program involves Aboriginal men from the local community providing advice, education and their stories on being successful and proud Aboriginal men. Murray High School’s Matthew Hogan is facilitating the program in its second year, which has also reached out to Albury High and James Fallon High School. “We started with just six boys last year and now we’re up

to 18 boys this year, he said. “The whole program itself is about connecting the boys with their Aboriginal identity, but most importantly connecting them with their country. A lot of the boys didn’t even realise last year that some of their friends were Aboriginal and that’s brought them closer together. “Ultimately, it brings a better connection with them and the school and keeps them at school longer. CSU is helping expand the program by bussing Aboriginal students from Albury and James Fallon High Schools to also take part in BroSpeak. Albury Thunder Rugby League Club and Melbourne Storm sponsored the program that saw the BroSpeak group head to Melbourne for a Melbourne Storm home game and to speak with the Aboriginal players.

Red blood cell clue Vishaw Grocery Store EARLY results from research run at Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Albury Wodonga have shown that reduced blood flow in people affected by diabetes and hypertension may be due to altered shapes and numbers of red blood cells. Dr Ross Richards and PhD student Mr Prajwal Gyawali, with CSU’s School of Community Health, said 3.6 million Australians now had diabetes, with three in five of these also suffering from heart diseases, both of which affect blood flow. “I am now aiming to verify these initial findings on the changed shapes of red blood cells, which will require more participants in my study,” Mr Gyawali said.

Mr Gyawali is calling for additional residents from Albury Wodonga to take part in his research which will help assess the severity and progression of diabetes and high blood pressure and may also contribute to a better understanding of possible causes of these diseases. During a once-only, 30-minute visit to a research room at CSU in Albury-Wodonga, Mr Gyawali will ask participants about their medical problems, dietary habits and medications, take body and blood pressure measurements and blood and urine samples for testing. To take part in the project, contact Mr Prajwal Gyawali on 0414 932 057.

ALBURY-WODONGA Regional Food Alliance had an open day last Friday, among other activities, in a bid to highlight the importance of an equitable, sustainable and resilient local food system. Director on the Albury Wodonga Regional Food Alliance board Di Mant said she donated her time and efforts for a myriad of reasons. “I’m passionate about the concept and there’s times in everyone’s lives they may be facing difficulties and need food, she said. “So if we can do this and save all this food from going into landfill then we should. We’re also reducing food miles

and carbon footprints, so it’s a really practical way of supporting the community. Healthy Together Wodonga has released figures which show 75 per cent of Australians believe levels of supermarket concentration are excessive, 86 per cent say supporting our farmers to grow more and 62 per cent say ‘protecting our best farmland from mining interests and suburban sprawl,’ should be in the top two measures for guaranteeing our food security. More than 90 per cent say it is ‘very’ or ‘quite’ important to them that we have a thriving farming sector and small to medium-sized food businesses and 85 per cent want ‘support for local and regional food systems’ to be in the top two priorities of a National Food Plan.

Political confusion

IT IS increasingly difficult to sort through the myriad of issues and make decisions in regards to an individual politician who can represent the North East community in the next election. Surely we can expect representation from an individual who knows the area, knows the problems and is confident in placing these needs, these requirements, into an overall Australian context. I desire a member of parliament who has a deep knowledge of the North East and always has North East issues at heart. It seems that communication with the community is a key element in learning about those living in this part of Australia. Over the last 12 years I have worked and lived in the North East and despite many commitments to committees and social occasions involving those who represent us, such as members of parliament, councillors, shire officers etc, I have never met the Federal Member for Indi. She has never been present. I have tried and indeed written numerous letters to Ms Mirabella but not once received an acknowledgement or an answer. Communication seems to have a one-way pathway, into her office and there it ends. Thankyou Cathy McGowan for the numerous occasions given over the last month to meet and discuss issues. Thank you for the answer to my single email. Thank you for the invitation to discuss my concerns in your office and the luxury of assurance that you take my issues seriously. I wonder who I will be voting for on 7 September? Carole O’Neill, Beechworth.

McGowan’s lost her

If you know you can’t make it to vote on Saturday 7 September, vote early. Your vote is a valuable thing, and all enrolled Australian citizens aged 18 or over are required by law to vote. So if you’re going to be away from home, or unable to make it to a polling place in your state or territory on election day, make sure you vote early. You can apply for a postal vote, or vote at any early voting centre.

Visit www.aec.gov.au or call 13 23 26 for more information.

Authorised by the Electoral Commissioner, West Block, Queen Victoria Terrace, Parkes, ACT.

FOR any candidate for the seat of Indi to assert that the continued market power of Coles and Woolworths is a good thing for our electorate is unbelievable. There’s absolutely no way I can support someone who clearly doesn’t understand what local farmers and manufacturers continue to go through in dealing with these two monstrous chains, or who treats the critical issue of food security as a laughing matter, as you did at the Albury candidates’ forum. I’ll now be putting you last on my ballot paper, and giving my number one preference to a candidate who actually understands these issues and gives us a voice on them. It won’t be going to a wannabe celebrity candidate who clearly has very little idea about key local problems, let alone how to practically address them. E. Enid Donadio, Freeburgh.

Voters - are you aware?

THERE has been a massive drop in federal funding throughout the seats of Indi since Labor came to power. We need to very seriously consider how lucky we will be by having our own federal member on tap should the Coalition win this election. Sophie Mirabella will be huge in terms of federal funding flowing once again. Sophie will be a frontbencher in the incoming government and an important part of any future government decisions. Do not miss this opportunity. Pat Chick, Wangaratta.

Murder on stage A GRISLY murder that put Albury centre stage is now coming to life through a new play, thanks to HotHouse Theatre and the Write Around The Murray Festival. The mystery of the Pyjama Girl was unsolved for more than a decade, with many believing the wrong victim was identified - the perfect mystery to tease out on stage. Scheduled for its world premier performance on 25 October at The Butter Factory Theatre, The Pyjama Girl play is still in the works, with the final reading of The Pyjama Girl, written by local writer now Canberra-based Emma Gibson, open to the public on Thursday 5 September. Emma Gibson’s book is the result of several years’ research, partially funded by a Federal Government grant (JUMP), and sheds new light on the woman found in yellow silk pyjamas near Howlong Road. “We’ll be holding a rehearsed play-reading as part of recognising the hard work writers do to create,” show director Travis Dowling said. “It doesn’t matter whether the writing is for theatre, children’s books, fiction or poetry, there is always plenty of research and editing before the final draft sees the light of day.” HotHouse has hosted a couple of readings for The Pyjama

Melanie Clark, Victoria Stanmore, Brendan McFarlane and Amos Wilksch rehearse for the upcoming play, The Pyjama Girl. Girl over the last 12 months, giving locals the chance to ‘hear’ for themselves, how a play is workshopped and progressed. Asking the question ‘who was the Pyjama Girl?’ This script looks at the facts of the 1934 case that captured Albury Wodonga’s, and indeed the nation’s attention for over a decade from the late 1930s. Performed by HotHouse’s talented Studio Ensemble some of the best actors under the age of 26 in the region The Pyjama Girl play reading offers a sneak peek at what will be a significant theatrical event drawn from our very own history.

Following the reading there will be a post-show forum featuring playwright Emma Gibson, HotHouse Artistic Director Jon Halpin and show director Travis Dowling about the challenges of putting history on stage. The forum will be moderated by CSU academic, Jenni Munday. Following the forum is the launch of the HotHouse Theatre/La Trobe University/Write Around the Murray short play writing competition for 2014. The Pyjama Girl reading is on Thursday 5 September at 7.30, The Butter Factory Theatre, Gateway Island. Cost is $5. Bookings: www.hothousetheatre.com.au or 02 6021 7433.

Hifi revolution

The Home of Fine Audio

ONE hifi product that has one of the best acoustic performances is the turntable the turntable market did not go away. The common reason for a new turntable is for putting vinyl onto a hard drive, now a technology to replicate mirror performances exist, and a replacement market for the worn-out model. In 1972 working on a hifi show in Sydney I encountered the first of the super grade turntables, the Linn LP12. After about three hours of work on the turntable in the setting up process a new benchmark in audio was born. The secret was to totally isolate the platter and tone arm from any vibration. The Linn 40 years later is still the benchmark, albeit with many refinements and much easier to set up. In 1973 an English company Rega also discovered a way of vibration isolation without the huge price tag. Not quite the Linn, but at a price to suit most music lovers. This year Rega celebrate their 40th anniversary, and until now I had not realised the quantum improvements that are discernible to the ear. The heart of the turntables is the pick-up cartridge. In the 1980s it was not uncommon to see the equivalent of two weeks’ pay spent on a high-end pick-up. The Holy Grail was for minimal record wear and a perfect stereo separation. I have recently rebirthed a number of turntables for clients and through

What goes around comes around ... chance applied a new Rega Cartridge to a turntable based on a couple of excellent reviews. The performance of this pick-up eclipsed the expensive cartridges I have worked with by a significant amount, proving the turntable product is still evolving and still improving. The further developments of the vinyl record, is due to the nightclub DJ market that understood the sonic ben-

efits. Today’s albums are often made of 180 gram vinyl or heavier to reduce the warping effect, of virgin material and mastered for high-grade turntables. Now most current popular artists have vinyl releases available. Along with improved cartridge pick-ups and a new grade of turntables, we have seen turntables go to another audiophile level.

Suzie Losch’s contribution comes from her studio at Gundowring - a magnificent old dairy she uses to house the objects she recycles into art. “She’ll get recycled stuff or go to the tip, she stores things and eventually she’ll use them all,” Ms Griggs said. “Everything has a beautiful sense of age, memory and time. It’s fantastic, playful stuff.” Winter Happy is on at GIGS Art Gallery until 8 September. GIGS is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am - 4pm. IF YOU’RE not a winter person, grey skies, angry storms, pelting rain and freezing nights have well and truly worn out their welcome. Think bright colours, playful energy and a textural smorgasbord - visit GIGS art gallery’s latest group exhibition, Winter Happy. A close group of five local artists, Winter Happy is the coming together of Nan Hoysted, Mary-Jane Griggs, Susie Losch, Mary-Rose Riley and Portia Janson in a celebration of the bright side of winter through painting, assemblage, sculpture and works on paper. “We’ve all known each other for a long time but four of us have worked together in the art school at Albury TAFE for many years so we’re good friends and fellow artists, and Portia is my daughter,” featuring artist Mary-Jane Griggs said. “It’s the first time Portia and I have had a show together. I love her work, it’s a completely different aesthetic and I think it’s really interesting. “Everyone has known Portia since she was a baby, so it’s really a gathering of old friends.” Ms Griggs said the idea began with Nan Hoysted who had originally booked space in GIGS and asked the four other artists to participate one by one. “It’s really celebrating what we all did individually and then shared,” Ms Griggs said. “We’ve had a lot of fun having meetings about how we would put the show together with five very different artists and quite a small space. “Because we’re all simpatico, it’s turned into a nice little celebration. We wanted it to be a celebration that in our winter we’re still making art.” Ms Griggs has contributed a series of warm, sweeping skyscapes inspired by the spectacular sunrises winter offers. “I’ve been living here 25 years and I love the winter mornings and the sunrises, so I’ve been taking photos,” Ms Griggs said. “I go out on the deck in my jammies and take photos of the sky. I’ve always wanted to paint them and so this was the opportunity to do that.” Ms Hoysted has put together 11 works using folded, tied and dyed papers, creating a wall of intricate, very individual but harmonious pieces. “Nan has done the beautiful tied paper and she’s dyed that with the black walnuts from the trees near JC King

Park,” Ms Griggs said. “She gathered them up last year and started dying and folding paper and she’s

locks and shadowhunters - demon slayers. When Clary’s mother is taken by evil shadowhunters, a young and talented shadowhunter, Jace, is there to show her the truth of the world she lives in, and Clary slowly begins to fill in the missing pieces of her memory. With a little help from her friends - old and new - Clary embarks a quest to both find her mother and locate The Mortal Cup before it falls into the wrong hands. The strong point of this film lies with the characters. Unlike the storyline, the characters in City of Bones hit the mark in producing most of the main characters exactly as the book describes them, from physical appearance to awkward and sometimes humorous nuances - why fix

something that’s not broken, right? Special effects were also extremely well done, with demons that will send a surprising shiver up your spine. The most disappointing part of this film is by far the plot, with critics saying it’s both an overload of information and confusing. From the perspective of someone who has read the book, I can certainly imagine most viewers leaving confused and frustrated - I almost did. But then I realised that despite every effort to make the film look and feel the same, the original storyline was completely ignored in a halfhearted bid to cram an entire book into 100 minutes.

Kia is a lane changer By ALISTAIR KENNEDY WITH the trend towards smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles seemingly here to stay Kia’s timing in launching the latest version of its Rondo could be just right. In a clever piece of design work, although the wheelbase of the new Rondo is 50mm longer than that of the outgoing model, it is marginally smaller in all other exterior dimensions. It’s a more stylish vehicle then previously, with a swept-back roofline tapering to a small rear lip spoiler and squared off tail that gives it a hatchback look. The front features the current Kia ‘Tiger Nose’ corporate grille flanked by sweeping headlamps. Despite a 40mm reduction in height from the previous model there’s excellent headroom in the front two rows, even with the standard sunroof in the range-topping Platinum variant. Another sensible design feature is extrawide rear doors that improve access to the third row seats. The second-row seats can be slid backwards and forwards on runners to juggle the amount of legroom available in all three rows. Seats can be folded in various ways, having a 60/40 split in the second row, and a 50/50 one the rear. The seats are comfortable and Rondo can carry four adults and three children with ease. The high driving position will appeal to those who are trading across from an SUV and handling is competent without being in any way exciting. After all, this is a people mover not a sports model. Interior stowage is very good, with large drawers under the second row foot wells and numerous spots throughout the cabin for drinks, wallets, phones, sunglasses and the various accoutrements of the modern lifestyles. With all seats in position there’s

The versatile Kia Rondo can switch from a seven-seat passenger car to a minivan. a maximum of just 103 litres of storage space and with the third-row seats folded that increases to 492 litres. Rondo can even be used as a mini van by folding the centre seats, increasing capacity to 1650 litres. For the first time Kia Rondo now comes with the option of a turbo-diesel engine in addition to an upgraded version of the previous 2.0-litre petrol. Torque is important for a relatively small vehicle that could be asked to carry up to seven occupants and the extra 24 Nm from the petrol engine (up to 213 Nm) will certainly be welcomed. With 300 Nm the diesel is unlikely to encounter any problems. Rondo comes in three equipment levels - Si, SLi and Platinum. The diesel is sold as Si and SLi only. A lack of demand for the manual gearbox offered previously has led to it being dropped with all models now

Model range Si 2.0-litre petrol seven-seat people mover: $29,990 (automatic) SLi 2.0-litre petrol seven-seat people mover: $33,990 (automatic) Platinum 2.0-litre petrol seven-seat people mover: $38,990 (automatic) Si 1.7-litre turbo-diesel seven-seat people mover: $32,490 (automatic) SLi 1.7-litre turbo-diesel seven-seat people mover: $36,490 (automatic)

mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, replacing the old four-speed, and with the choice of standard and sport modes. Paddle shifts are standard in the SLi and Platinum models. We’ve been able to road test both Rondo engines, the diesel during the press launch a few months ago and the petrol in our extended week-long test.

Regular readers will know of my preference for diesel power and while that would be our model of choice the petrol unit handled a 200 km round trip with three adults and three 11-year-old soccer players plus gear surprisingly well. When cruising the petrol engine pulled well enough, only being tested when it encountered some moderately steep hills. Nevertheless we’d recommend spending the extra $2500 for the diesel if you’re going to load up on a regular basis either with people or cargo. On the other hand if you’re looking for a good sized hatch with a high driving position the petrol will no doubt be all that you’ll need. Fuel consumption is listed at 7.9 litres per 100 km from the petrol and 6.4 L/100 km with the diesel on the combined cycle.

With our full load in the petrol Rondo we recorded 9.3 L/100 km on the above journey about two-thirds of which was on motorway conditions. Handling is competent without being in any way exciting but that’s to be expected while suspension enhancements provide a more comfortable ride with reduced road noise intrusion. Korean car makers pride themselves on high equipment levels and Kia Rondo safety gear includes front, side and curtain airbags (the latter only for the front two rows of seats); ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; Electronic Stability Program and Vehicle Stability Management; Hill-Start Assist; reverse parking sensors; and reversing camera. Also standard are cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, auxiliary and USB sockets, colour LCD touch screen (4.3-inch in the Si and SLi and a 7-inch in the Platinum), MyMusic function that enables MP3 copying and steering wheel mounted controls. The mid-spec SLi adds piano black grille mesh, chrome highlights, puddle lighting on the side mirrors, front parking sensors, LED daytime running lights, leather trimmed seats, powered driver’s seat, and fold-flat front passenger’s seat. The flagship petrol-only Platinum variant also gets LED rear combination lamps, full-length sunroof, refrigerated glovebox, push-button start, satellite navigation with SUNA traffic information and climate controlled front seats New Kia Rondo joins Toyota Prius v and Fiat Freemont in adding new competition the compact Australian people mover market. The extra equipment and new transmission has come at a price with the entry-level Rondo Si $2000 more than the equivalent MY2013 model but it still offers excellent value, especially when Kia’s standard five-year, unlimited warranty is factored in.

Do not overtake turning vehicle HOW many drivers see the do not overtake turning vehicle sign, and either don’t pay any attention to it or even understand what it means. This sign is there for a reason - it is not a suggestion, it is law. It is fitted to all rigid and articulated vehicles over 6 metres in length (this includes some caravans). Only a few weeks ago in Sydney, a driver’s car was trapped between the truck and trailer of a tipper truck, because they thought they could get around the corner before the truck. Unfortunate-

ly, the truck needed two lanes to turn and the car was right in the truck’s turning zone. Trucks are legally allowed to use two lanes to turn (both left and right) and car drivers have to give them that room, in the same way that cars have to give way to buses pulling out from bus stops. I personally have driven over two car bonnets and hit the side of one car, simply because the drivers could not wait for my truck to get around the corner or through the roundabout. There have been countless times when I have had

near-misses (not bad for over 15 yrs as a professional driver). In all three incidents, I called police and the car drivers were fined simply because they failed to give way to a turning vehicle. If the truck driver can see what the car driver is doing then quite often they will stop and try to give them room, but this is not always possible. It is easier for the car driver (being the smaller and more manoeuvrable vehicle) to either adjust their line through the turn/roundabout or even just be a little patient. The road is there to share.

For all your riding gear

To the moon and back I’VE been in the motorcycle industry for 36 years and while I have long since given up being surprised by the innovations and technological advances that come our way, I am always amazed at how much things have changed. How much safer and more enjoyable is the whole motorcycle riding experience as a result of the application of these advances? In many cases, these were developed for entirely different industries and uses. Recently I have been wearing RST’s latest offering in waterproof safety clothing, the Outlast Titanium series jacket, pants and gloves. Now you may well ask, what does me wearing RST’s latest offering have to do with innovative technologies from other industries?

It is a perfect example of how a material originally developed for use by NASA in astronauts’ space suits to protect them from the extreme temperature fluctuations experienced in outer space when working outside of a craft or space station, has been adapted and utilised to make our riding experience more comfortable and therefore also safer as we are not distracted by the extremes of temperature. Outlast is the trademarked name of a material type called a phase change material (PCM). In essence it works by absorbing the excess heat generated by our bodies and releasing it back when needed to keep our body temperature at a constantly comfortable temperature. It

works best were there are temperature fluctuations and isn’t this one of the constant challenges we face when touring on a motorcycle. Only two weeks ago we were out for a ride with the local Triumph RAT group (Riders Association Triumph) and I noticed the on-board temperature gauge on the Triumph fluctuated between 8 and 16 degrees over the course of the day and yet I remained comfortable the whole day and was only wearing a T-shirt under my RST Outlast jacket. How amazing is it when the safety gear we wear is directly related to an astronaut! Safe riding everyone!

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

A heavenly deal ONE of the most sought-after parcels of real estate is a disused church, for people to apply their talents in “converting to a residence or other such venture. Such an opportunity presents on Saturday 14 September when the former Presbyterian Church at Tallangatta is offered for sale by public auction at 11am. The building is in good condition and is located in a prime residential position opposite the state primary school and just around the corner from St Joseph’s primary school, which makes the property especially appealing to young families looking to put their time and talent to work. The foreshores of Lake Hume are a short walk away for fishing, water skiing or just to sit and take in

the beauty of a near-brimming Lake Hume. Shopping and other commercial services are also within easy walking distance. The building comprises the main body of the church which is approximately 72m2; with a small entry plus a vestry room which is about 6x4m. Male and female toilets are just outside the back door. The external is clad in Hardiplank, while the interior is timber-lined, both walls and ceiling - possibly Murray Pine. The land component is 708m2; with the building strategically located in the centre of the block to allow a garage, garden or outdoor living area etc. While the first thought is a residence, subject to council approval the property may appeal

to another denomination, possibly a dance or exercise studio, gymnasium or would be ideal as an independent chapel where funerals or weddings could be conducted. Anyone contemplating such ventures would be wise to consult the Towong Shire Planning Department to get more detailed information as to the possibilities. Preceding the auction, a clearing sale of church furniture will be held. Items included are 14 pews, the pulpit, communion table, baptismal font, hymn board and other sundry items. These can be viewed by requesting an electronic brochure from the selling agents, Wodonga Real Estate Best Agents of 6 a. Stanley St, Wodonga.

Now, it’s time for tactics

Qualifying final - Yarrawonga v Lavington YARRAWONGA must dust itself off after a gruelling 47-point loss at the hands of the Albury Tigers last weekend and face a confident Lavington in this weekend’s first round of the Ovens and Murray football finals. The Pigeons were not only comprehensively outplayed by a slick Albury but also picked up their share of injury concerns. Last year’s Morris medal runner-up Xavier Leslie left the ground on crutches with an ankle injury, Ed Bayles a hamstring and Connor Hargreaves a shoulder complaint. It was only a month ago that the Lavington side toppled last year’s Premiers for the first time this season, and they will be hungry to repeat that feat on Saturday. The Panthers took the opportunity to rest seven players from last week’s senior list and they will be fresh and full of run. Run appears to be the key! Yarrawonga were exposed for pace last week, and it will be in this department the Panthers will be looking to get the edge. While it may appear the Pigeons have their backs against the wall, it might be timely to remember the club has only lost three games of football in almost two years and should not be written off yet. Geelong Premiership player Brad Ottens is likely to return this weekend and will immediately put pressure on the Panthers defence. Kayne Pettifer is also on track for a return for Yarrawonga after a foot injury has seen him sidelined for the past few weeks. Pettifer will inject plenty of pace and skill to the Pigeons forward line. The Panthers have been exceptionally disciplined in their structures and game plan all season, however in the past few weeks this has waned a little. A lift a little in that department combined with a fresher line-up may see them start favourites. Lavington by 7 points

Elimination final - Wangaratta Rovers V North Albury NORTH Albury appeared to have turned the corner a fortnight ago with a sound performance against Lavington. The Hoppers are still yet to beat a team in the five and Sunday’s do or die final would be as good as place as any to do that. Key forward Adam Prior just notched up his third Doug Strang goal kicking award and will take plenty of confidence into the clash. He will however be more than aware that his opponent on the day, Wang Rovers captain Tyson Hartwig, won’t let him get an easy touch. Nth Albury’s best chance of a victory will rely on how much support Prior gets. The Hoppers may almost need Prior to play high up the ground and rely on Maksymow and Akermanis to kick goals. The Rovers’ forward line has also struggled for goalkickers this season. Joel Coombes is starting to provide some consistent efforts down there but he will need Gaston, McCullough and Stone to all fire with him on the day. If the Hoppers can click they have too many potential match-winners, the big problem is just that - getting them all to click on the same day. Nth Albury by 8 points.

World champions Donna Burgess and Rachel Little took home four golds and two silvers between them in Italy earlier this month.

Gold, gold, gold, gold! By KRYSTEN MANUEL Lavington Panthers Kade Stevens was one of seven players given last Saturday off to freshen up. This tactical player management by the Panthers could go a long way into being the difference when they meet a battle-scarred Yarrawonga in Saturday’s Qualifying final.

IT’S one thing to be an Australian Champion, but to be the best in the world is an accomplishment some people spend their whole lives striving for. But Rachel Little and Donna Burgess have done exactly that - taking home four gold medals and two silver at the 2013 World Masters Games in Torino, Italy earlier this month. “I’m just so rapt,” Burgess said. “I knew Rachel would run well but I didn’t think I would.” Little was equally stunned, but owes her success to her husband and trainer, Ken Little, as well as Team Velocity. “It’s all down to technique and Ken is so far ahead of everybody,” Little said. “Other trainers and athletes over there couldn’t believe our technique and that we’d come from this little town. The other coaches picked Ken’s brains all week!” Both women were up against the odds, going from temperatures of 11 degrees to 38 degrees, jet-lag from a 26-hour flight, and not having had competition since March but walking into what was the middle of the season for many competitors. Little’s first race was the W45 400m, which she won with a time of 60.22 sec. “I won my heat but the com-

petitors in the other heats, I knew they were only cruising, so I knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” she said. “The final was next day. The track was brand new, it was a rubberised carpet so it’s silent. You can’t even hear your own footsteps let alone someone else’s. I was caught at the 300 mark and saw her come up on my inside and I thought ’this race is mine.’ “I held my technique and form right to the finish line, but it was pretty close.” Little also took home silver in the 200m with a time of 27.3 seconds behind the world record holder from France, Maryvonne Iccar. “Unfortunately we had to run in torrential rain, there was lightning and thunder,” Little said. Donna also emerged victorious in the W50 400m with a personal best time of 64.32 sec. “We went straight to a final,” Burgess said. “I won the 400 easy coming down the straight. I was waiting for them to come past me but they never did, so that gave me a lot of confidence.” Donna also took out the 800m with another personal best time of 2.29.75 min. “Again, my 800 went straight to a final,” she said. “There was a Dutch woman who went out really quick

and Ken had said, ’if they go out quick you have to go with them,’ so I did. I went around her and got to the 600m and she was still with me, but I was too strong coming down the straight. “I was a lot fitter than I’d thought - I’d underestimated myself.” Little and Burgess also competed in the 160 - 199 year 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays, taking out gold in the 4 x 100m and silver in the 4 x 400m. “It was Donna and I and two girls from Great Britain in the 4 x 100m,” Little said. “Donna was on the first leg, myself in second and the girl on last leg was fastest in the whole competition!” While it was an emotional series of wins for both competitors, Burgess was particularly emotional once winning the 800m. “My Dad ran in the World Masters in 1998 and he won a silver medal in the 800m,” she said. “I took his medal over there with me. He’s passed now but if he had have been around he would have been proud - I went one better and got a gold!” Burgess and Little will continue training with Team Velocity, with their eyes set to defend their titles in France, 2015 at the World Athletics Championships.
