Kate’s on a mission By KRYSTEN MANUEL

Kate Duncan will represent Albury at the Jamaica Blue 2013 Golden Cuisine Challenge. “There’s a fair few different components to the actual competition, she said. “The main part is we have to come up with our own spring inspired dish, so something fresh and nice for the warmer weather. We could choose savoury or sweet - I decided to do sweet. “I’m doing a baked passion fruit and lime tart - something a bit zingy to get going for the warmer weather. I’ll have to do five of those, one for each judge, and then we’re doing bite-sized pieces and everyone in Jamaica Blue head office will be tasting it. It’s very Masterchef! “We also have to try to guess

everything that’s in certain dishes, what it is and where it’s from in the world. “Then there’s another section that I think will be similar to last year, it’s a mystery box challenge where we are given ingredients and have to cook something. After making it to the Grand Final last year, Kate is looking forward to competing in the cook-off and is hoping to go one step further this year to take home the champion title to Albury. “Last year’s competition was such a great experience that I decided to do it all again this year - and hopefully walk away with the top

prize this time! Kate said. “The best thing about cooking is the opportunity to create something people really enjoy and to make them happy. I also love that I can share the cooking experience at home with my son and teach him all about food. In addition to the glory of claiming the coveted title, the Jamaica Blue 2013 Golden Cuisine Challenge Champion will receive a $1000 Gift Card, on top of the $250 Gift Card they received as a state finalist. If Kate wins the grand final prize, she plans to spoil her son with a family holiday.

WHEN the BULLYCheck program was released earlier this year by Clubs NSW, not everyone was happy. Talk shows played devil’s advocate, saying “why punish a child for a mistake/ mistakes made back in school? And some members of the school system deemed the program “a simplistic approach to a complex problem. It’s true, the approach is quite different to most other bully prevention techniques in that it provides a negative incentive by punishing the bully for their behaviour. While many other programs focus on damage to the victim and attempt to appeal to the bully’s better nature, it’s our view that tougher penalties, including the BULLYCheck initiative, need to be brought in to protect the victims and send the message - it’s not on and it will not be forgotten. Under the BULLYCheck program, serial bullies will be held accountable for their actions and will learn very quickly that society or “the real world has no time for selfish, degrading and damaging behaviour, especially in the workplace.

LOCAL cook Kate Duncan is again on a mission to prove the most delicious dishes are served at Albury in the Jamaica Blue 2013 Golden Cuisine Challenge. With more than a decade of cooking experience, Kate is one of six finalists who competed and won against more than 90 competitors from across Australia and New Zealand to make it to the grand final cook-off, to be held in Sydney today. “I was shocked when I won it last year - completely surprised, so I’m chuffed to be going again,â€? she said. “I’ll have an idea of what the kitchen set-up is, that’s one of the daunting processes - what am I going to have to cook with? The fact that I know what’s there will make it a little bit easier, but it will be interesting to see who else is there.â€? Aged 28, Kate has worked at Jamaica Blue Albury since the cafĂŠ opened two years ago. During the grand final, Kate will work in a team of three finalists to create and serve an inspiring three-course menu. Within a two-hour time limit, each team will need to purchase their ingredients and serve an entrĂŠe, main meal and dessert before a panel of expert judges. The judging panel will assess Kate and her competitors on their knife skills, compliance to food-safety standards and kitchen-cleanliness.
