We promise to never euthanise a sociable, healthy or treatable companion animal, whatever their age. OUR PROMISE TO ANIMALS | ITA BUTTROSE | STRAY ANIMALS’ DAY 2017
to d e t t i m Com Our Promise
CEO'S MESSAGE have quality of life with medical intervention and management. Since July 2016 we have achieved this and will continue to maintain a zero euthanasia of healthy, sociable, and treatable animals in all our rehoming centres.
adley r B e s i n De Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) has always broken new ground introducing initiatives to reduce the number of stray and abandoned animals in the community and leads the way in their care and rehoming. In April this year we rehomed our 125,000th animal since first opening our doors and hearts to animals in need back in 1959; an amazing achievement! This milestone has only been achieved through the generous support from the community and the tireless efforts of our staff, volunteers, and supporters who are dedicated to saving the lives of the thousands of animals that come into our care each year. Through working with our national Getting 2 Zero (G2Z) program, AWLQ is extremely proud to have not euthanised any healthy and sociable animal from the Gold Coast since 2009; which is an amazing achievement for a city with a population of over 560,000 people. Our ultimate goal has always been to work towards extending this to also include treatable animals – this means any animal with a condition that is treatable that they can fully recover from, or that they can
It is only through your continued support and loyalty during this difficult journey that we have been finally able to reach this long held and important goal. We can now make this promise to you that we will never euthanise a sociable, healthy or treatable companion animal, whatever their age. Now that we are there - we need your support more than ever; and so do the animals we care for. This achievement is yours as much as ours and the work doesn’t stop here. Your ongoing support allows us to continue to uphold our promise to both you and to the thousands of animals that need our care each year. Please consider giving a donation and make a life changing difference to an abandoned shelter animal. Warm regards,

™ ’ s t r a e H n e d l o G Ambassador - Ita Buttrose AO OBE, journalist, longtime editor of the iconic Women’s Weekly and CLEO magazines, business woman, media identity, community advocate and animal lover.
Ita
Ita Buttrose has been a household name for generations. Her achievements are many and varied. Among her greatest passions though are Australian seniors, and pets.
“Animals are just such wonderful companions,” Ita said. “They don’t judge you. They never get angry. Well a cat can occasionally get angry with you, but cats have attitude!”
GOLDEN HEARTS dinner at our place. Claude used to escape. We’d come home from work and find that he’d dug a hole under the fence in the backyard. We always found him two streets up at the Boy Scouts’ Hall and had to do a sort of flying football tackle to get him.” There were cats too. Ping, Pang and Pong were family favourites. “Pong lasted the longest. Pong came everywhere with us. He was a character. He would walk us to the bus when we went to school and all those sorts of things.” Later as an adult Ita had Siamese cats including Bollinger (who earned her a bottle of the bubbly after the company Bollinger heard), Claude (in keeping with the dog Claude), and Bogart, best friends with Humphrey, her Labrador.
“When I was approached to be AWLQ’s Golden Hearts’ Ambassador I thought it was such a brilliant concept,” Ita said. “I was so impressed that AWLQ rehomed more than 8,600 animals last year. I thought that was phenomenal!” Ita’s love of animals began early in a family which embraced the concept of choosing to adopt a shelter pet well before it became mainstream.
After Butch came Pedro – named by one of Ita’s brothers after a boy that she was dating. Then when Ita married, her husband recognised her need for a companion animal while he studied architecture and the couple renovated the family home. Enter a Beagle named Claude.
Page 4 - AWLQ Tawl Tails Winter Edition 2017
“He was very naughty. He ate everything. He once ate my leather gloves and he ate my sister-inlaw’s good shoes when she slipped them off while having
Ita’s drive to recognise and respect seniors’ rights was nationally lauded in 2013 with her Australian of the Year award. It followed years of campaigning for quality of life benchmarks for seniors. This includes companion animals and the important role they have in the lives of seniors. Ita witnessed this with her own aunt and uncle who were unable to take their beloved cat into assisted living care. “I could never understand it. I thought this is awful. Why can’t they have a cat? But it was the rule. So I feel quite strongly that older Australians should be allowed to have animals, companion animals, because it’s the very nature of their loving. When I visited that particular aunt who ended up in a further sort of assisted living aged care facility, I used to visit her with my dog.”
“I didn’t have any hesitation in accepting.
“We seemed to always have cats or dogs, one or the other when I was a child. Sometimes we had both. The first I remember was a dog called Butch. I think Mum and Dad got him from the pound. Dad reckoned that Butch had a bit of dingo in him because he swore Butch used to sit at the back door and howl at the moon. I don’t know about that. I think Dad was being Dad.”
“ I was grief stricken - Bogart was the best companion. It was like he knew. He would come over and sit on my lap and he didn’t mind if I dripped a few tears on him.”
Ita was to know the true value of a companion animal when she received tragic news. “I lost a brother to cancer 11 years ago. I only had Bogart then. It was a really sad time for me. I was grief stricken and sometimes when I would cry, Bogart was the best companion. It was like he knew. He would come over and sit on my lap and he didn’t mind if I dripped a few tears on him. I find animals are the best companions, whether you’re happy or sad. They are very intuitive and seem to sense your mood.”
That dog is the very aptly named Cleo, named after the highly successful magazine Ita so famously launched. Cleo is Ita’s constant companion.
This is my cat Bella my British Short Hair. She was about eight years old when I rescued her from Canberra. She and Cleo became great friends and she loved boxes.
They live in a dog-friendly building where four legged companions are the main focus of attention. “We all get in the lift and we all say ‘Hello Mr Darcy. Hello Nugget. Hello Cleo’. Everybody knows the dogs’ names. We don’t know each other’s names but we all know our dogs’ names. It’s really nice because you are with like-minded people.” It’s also a reminder of why AWLQ’s breakthrough Golden Hearts Seniors’ Pet Support program is so important. “It’s a wonderful concept and a very effective program. We can see that it works. We can see the joy and happiness that the program can bring, both to the pets, but particularly to the owners.
Treat pets well and they are yours for life and you’ll have their heart for life.” – Ita’s advice to people with companion animals.

NATIONAL DESEXING MONTH
NATIONAL DESEXING MONTH

Nationwide DISCOUNTED DESEXING throughout July!
Let’s talk about desexing! Communities are urged to get their local vets on board to support National Desexing Month in July to help prevent unwanted litters. “Please check with your local vet clinic to see if they are part of the program and ask them to sign up if they’re not,” National Desexing Network Strategic Director, Dr Joy Verrinder said. Veterinarians can sign up by going to www.ndn.org.au and filling out the Participation Form.
“We’re encouraging as many vets as possible to come on board, and for their customers to take advantage of these discounted rates and get their pets desexed in July,” Dr Verrinder said. “Our Community Vet Clinics at Ipswich and the Gold Coast in Queensland and in Hobart, Tasmania are all part of the NDN July campaign.” “Last year’s campaign saw 202 clinics desex more than 10,000
Last year more than 3,000 kittens and nearly 1,200 puppies were born, surrendered or simply dumped at one of five AWLQ Rehoming Centres in South East Queensland alone. Many more don’t make it to the shelters, rescue groups or pounds, and are abandoned to live and breed on the streets, around shopping centres and industrial complexes. “Desexing also provides many direct benefits to owners and companion animals. Cats and dogs are less likely to stray, spray in and around your house, or be injured fighting over territory. They are often more relaxed and affectionate and, generally, live longer and happier lives. And who wouldn’t want that for their dog or cat?” Dr Verrinder said.

“It’s so important to prevent unwanted kittens and puppies, rather than try to manage them after they are born. Often people do not realise that cats can become pregnant from four months of age, and also while still weaning their kittens, which makes it particularly difficult to break the cycle of ongoing breeding.”
Page 6 - AWLQ Tawl Tails Winter Edition 2017
“Desexing in July reduces the numbers of kittens pouring into shelters and pounds in the warmer months from November to April. This reduction helps to ease the overcrowding which makes animals stressed and sick, and causes the despair of shelter staff and volunteers trying to save as many lives as possible; when there are not enough homes for the numbers needing them in peak season, whilst having to cope with exploding fostering and veterinary care costs. AWLQ also encourages caring community members to check if any stray cats they may be feeding are

The National Desexing Network (NDN) is an initiative of Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ). Now in its 13th year, it asks veterinarians around the country to sign up and offer discounted cat and dog desexing. This year’s theme is ‘Let’s Talk about Desexing’. identified, return them and encourage the owners to desex their cats, and if not currently owned, take advantage of lower desexing prices in July to help prevent stray cats breeding and contributing to feral cat populations.
• A breeder is any person who has a female dog with a litter.
Communities are also asked to encourage their Council Animal Management departments to be proactive by subsidising desexing to help residents in need in their communities. This prevents animals coming into the pound, and reduces animal management costs. The National Desexing Network have developed a successful year round Cooperative Desexing Program with Councils and local veterinarians and are offering to set up this program in cities around Australia.

s Stella has settled in real y well and is super playful. She loves a cuddle and has taken quite a liking to our eldest daughter Chloe. However there are four more children who are also loving giving her a cuddle and taking turns to feed her. She loves to look at herself in the mirrors around the house, we often find her with her paws up on the mirror checking herself out. We are following your guide to introducing Miss Stella to our other cat Milo and we are very happy to report that is also going real y well. I have attached a little collage of some photos.

Our pet fostering program allows animals to receive some extra TLC in a home environment away from the shelter life. Sometimes the fostering experience is so special that foster carers choose to adopt the animal they have been caring for. Many of our staff and volunteers are proud of their ‘foster failures,’ the foster animals they have adopted themselves. Adopting an ex-racing rescue greyhound is one of the most rewarding things you may ever do! They are low shedding, friendly, well mannered, gentle, and do not tend to bark. Although greyhounds have often never seen a couch in their life, they know exactly what to do when one appears and will happily curl up beside you to watch Friday night footy. If you’ve thought about adopting one of these amazing greys, then come talk to our staff today and try out fostering!

Generous community support raises an incredible $154,210 during AWLQ’s Stray Animals’ Day Challenge! AWLQ’s inaugural Stray Animals’ Day challenge has been hailed a success with $154,210 raised for the lifesaving AWLQ Foster House program. To get the ball rolling Purina Australia made the first donation of $5,000. Support then flowed from corporates, businesses and various fundraising initiatives from both supporters and animal lovers everywhere.
Page 10 - AWLQ Tawl Tails Winter Edition 2017
“We’ve had incredible support from the community which has embraced this key program wholeheartedly. We can’t thank them enough for their donations,” AWLQ CEO Denise Bradley said. The Elsie Cameron Foundation, a long term advocate for animal welfare and supporter of AWLQ generously offered to match donations raised during the campaign taking the total funds raised to $154,210. Over 800 cash donations were received via our Go Fund Me page and website. Even more donations were received from customers and supporters who visited our fundraising and events team located at participating Ben & Jerry’s
Ice Cream stores on the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
“This is a very expensive promise, but one we are committed to.
“It’s incredible to have such support, from such a generous benefactor, our sponsors, the general community and of course our long term supporters,” Ms Bradley said.
“And we can only do this with the ongoing financial help of the community.”
AWLQ Ambassadors champion athlete Sally Pearson OAM, Gold Coast Titan Chris McQueen, Surf Lifesaving champion Courtney Hancock and Brisbane cricketer Nicholas Buchanan were also instrumental in reaching out to the community and launching the program. “Our promise to you is that we will never euthanise a sociable, healthy or treatable animal, whatever their age,” Ms Bradley said.
Animal Welfare League Queensland continues to be a leader in animal rehoming. Since 1959 it has rehomed an estimated 125,000 animals. AWLQ’s Foster House program and its incredibly dedicated foster carers have been instrumental in these results. “Animal Welfare League Queensland’s programs and supporters are critical to this success.”

Port of Brisbane digs deep to help Animals! Port of Brisbane employees have shown their generous support of Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) with a donation of $16,426 to support vet care services and rehoming for stray, abandoned and surrendered pets. A proportion of the donation was money raised by employees through their internal raffles, bake and chocolate sales and employee payroll contribution, with the remainder donated by the business to match the fundraising effort. Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL) Chief Executive Officer, Roy Cummins said supporting a charity like AWLQ
through staff fundraising efforts ensured PBPL remained committed to positively impacting the community in which we operate. “The Port of Brisbane is heavily focused on supporting the local community and the charities that do such a great job,” Mr Cummins said. “I’d like to congratulate Animal Welfare League Queensland for the work they do. I’m sure this donation will ensure many animals are safely housed and cared for. “I’d also like to congratulate our employees for their kind donations. We have a proud history of supporting a variety of charities and the work they do within our community.”

What is Workplace Giving?
digs deep!
GIVIN
Workplace Giving is as simple as making a small regular pre-tax donation from your pay which provides an immediate tax benefit to you and of course makes a huge difference to your chosen charity. Why Choose Workplace Giving? Businesses are embracing corporate social responsibility by including initiatives like workplace giving which is a great place to start. It’s a win-win for business, employees and charities. • Consumers like to do business with companies that care and engage with their community. • Employees want to work for philanthropic companies. • Workplace giving is now more flexible than ever.
• Your contribution provides us with a much needed, low cost and regular revenue stream allowing us to plan ahead to improve facilities and services ensuring the best possible care and attention for our animals in need. How much of your donation goes to the cause ?
Creates a cost effective way to build long term partnerships with community and charities Provides opportunities to engage with volunteering and fund raising initiatives. Giving and matching boosts employee engagement by empowering your people to support causes which matter to them.
AWLQ continues to perform well in comparison with both Australian and International charities with one of the lowest administration cost percentages at just 8.5% of total costs. This means 91.5 cents in every dollar that you donate will directly help those in need. Workplace giving benefits employees by:
Providing an immediate tax benefit by reducing your taxable income Removing concerns about record-keeping (as donations are recorded on your payslip).
Workplace giving benefits employers by: Boosting employee morale Providing an opportunity to match employee donations thus doubling the value of their donation.
Join with some of Australia’s most recognised businesses that support AWLQ through Workplace Giving. These include: JB Hi-Fi, Starbucks, Collins Foods Limited, Foxtel, Workpac, NTI and of course, our own AWLQ Staff. If just 10% of Australia’s workforce made a $5 a week payroll donation it would generate over $300 million in donations to charities in need. Sign up today and help save a life.

Lismore resident Roma, had just welcomed Tom, a 10 week old Jack Russell to her family, when the devastating Cyclone Debbie floods hit on 31 March 2017. Having some warning in the lead up to the event, Roma moved herself and her pets, including Tom, to a friend’s house which was perched on higher ground. The floodwaters lapped at the floorboards of the top storey of the house, destroying anything on its ground floor. As a Jack Russell puppy Tom is naturally very small and very wiggly. After the floodwaters receded downstairs, Tom managed to find a way to wiggle off the top floor balcony and fell 2.4 metres. The fall fractured both his front legs.

“The right leg was worse than the left and there was a point where we thought that he might lose his leg,” Ben said. “We had nowhere else to go and we finally turned to Animal Welfare League Queensland’s Gold Coast Community Vet Clinic,” said Ben.
“After three and half hours of surgery, Tom ended up with one screw and two pins in each of his little elbows. He proved to be a champion and recovered well from surgery. Five weeks post operatively, he is walking well and on the path to making a full recovery. Happy days!” said Andres.

A number of vets turned the family down, or didn’t offer a payment system for such an expensive procedure.

The staff at AWLQ worked with a local Samoyed rescue group to place Bobo with a foster family while they continued investigating his health concerns. Blood tests revealed that he had severe hypothyroidism, which could be managed with daily medication. Fortunately, the suspicious lump was not adenocarcinoma as feared, but simply a blocked anal gland.
BOBO BOUNCE S BACK

AWLQ continuously works in partnership with ethical rescue groups to ensure good outcomes for as many animals as possible. This is especially important for animals that are not coping in the shelter environment, those that have specific breed requirements or that have been diagnosed with medical conditions that require ongoing investigation and management. Last September, a Samoyed named Bobo came into the care of our Brisbane Animal Rehoming Centre. Although his microchip stated that Bobo was five years old, this was clearly an error. With his stiff gait, weepy eyes and hoarse bark, he presented as a much older dog, perhaps closer to double the age on his microchip. He was overweight, battling a raging ear infection and had a suspicious lump in his bottom. His coat was coarse and wiry, without any of the famous fluffy Samoyed undercoat that protects them against not only the cold climate that it was designed for, but our tropical weather also. In fact, he had lost all the hair on what should have been a majestic plume of a tail. Bobo was uncomfortable and unhappy and we made it a priority to get him to the people who could change that. The previously lethargic dog became one that demanded daily walks and loved trips to the beach. Miraculously, Bobo seemed to be ageing backwards. Perhaps the birthdate on his microchip was correct after all! Finally in January, Bobo was adopted into a wonderful family.

Overcoming the Sound Barrier It used to be a rare occurrence to encounter deaf dogs in our society. Unfortunately these days they are no longer uncommon, and are often as a result of indiscriminate breeding; something that could easily be prevented. We see a lot of these dogs coming through our doors. Here at our Beenleigh Rehoming Centre we have had them come through from as young as seven weeks, right up to senior dogs.
Just like any other dogs, they come in all shapes and sizes, and all with their own unique characters. Dogs like Merlin the Wolfhound cross (pictured) is a big, goofy, gentle giant. There’s also Cooper the Bull Terrier cross (pictured). He came to AWLQ as a young pup with no skills at all. Cooper is a quick learner though and after a couple of weeks in foster care with some specialised training, he was very quickly adopted. All are equally adorable in their very own special way.
We are thrilled that our many partnerships with ethical rescue groups can mean that even more animals are able to find their forever homes. If you have ever considered, or are considering adopting a deaf dog, it may come as a surprise to you to know that most average pet owners do in fact have the skills they need, to own and successfully train a deaf dog. It all comes down to a slightly different way of positive training, using hands signals and teaching your dog to always ‘check in’ with his owner for instructions. If you already have a sociable, well behaved dog that is an added bonus (as deaf dogs often learn to take cues from them). Adopting a deaf dog from our AWLQ Beenleigh Rehoming Centre means that we have already done an assessment on the level of knowledge these dogs have. While in our care they are given ongoing training to try and set them up to enjoy a bright future in a loving home.
