CEO'S MESSAGE

Denise Bradley

It is my pleasure to welcome you to our autumn edition of Tawl Tails. In July 2016 we made a promise to never euthanise a sociable, healthy or treatable companion animal in our care. The Gold Coast was the first major city in Australia, and Brisbane the first capital city to achieve this milestone. This major success was only made possible through the hard work and commitment of our staff and volunteers and the financial support of the community. We were recently honoured and delighted to welcome Ita Buttrose AO OBE as a Patron of AWLQ alongside the Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG. It is a great privilege to have two such highly respected and eminent Australians supporting our life saving work with companion animals. In September 2017 we held our 7th National G2Z Summit on the Gold Coast. The theme for the summit was ‘Getting them Home – Keeping them Home’. International speakers gave presentations on a variety of topics and strategies to assist with keeping people and pets united, to ultimately lead to reducing the number of animals finding their way into pounds and shelters. Over 300 delegates across Australia and New Zealand attended the G2Z Summit with representation from sectors across all levels of government, shelter and rescue groups, the veterinary and pet industries and the general

community. Many months of hard work and planning culminated in our most successful G2Z Summit to date. In December 2017 we held our fifth Project Empty Shelter. The event saw 196 animals rehomed over the weekend. Project Empty Shelter is our biggest annual rehoming campaign and is a highlight for our staff and volunteers. The inaugural Stray Animals Day Appeal was held in April 2017 and successfully raised $154,000.00. Money raised contributed to our foster program – a vital support program which assists the most vulnerable pets coming into our care. In 2017 we received overwhelming support from our corporate partners and supporters who donated a total of $76,000.00. The Elsie Cameron Foundation, a long-term supporter of AWLQ, generously offered to match all funds raised which brought the final total to $154,210.00 We are indebted to Jan Cameron and the Elsie Cameron Foundation for their ongoing support which has enabled us to achieve so much in accomplishing real and long-term improvements in the welfare of companion animals. We take this opportunity to thank our entire team of dedicated staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to achieve great outcomes for our community and their pets.

WELCOME SECTION TO OUR HEADING PATRON

Ita Buttrose joins us as Patron After supporting our Golden Hearts Program as Ambassador since 2015, we are excited to announce Ita Buttrose, AO OBE has come on board as Patron of AWLQ. Ita joins Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG who has been Patron of AWLQ since 2014. Ita’s love of animals began early in a family which embraced the concept of choosing to adopt a shelter pet well before it became main stream. “Animals are just such wonderful companions,” Ita said. “They don’t judge you. They never get angry.” We thank our Patrons for their generous support.

e b u o y n a C a foster carer? Taking an animal into your home, caring for them and watching them become healthy, strong and happy is one of the best ways to help animals in need. Our foster program allows animals that need extra care, the opportunity to temporarily spend time in a home environment and be cared for as their own family would. Once the foster animal is old enough to be adopted or has recovered from illness or injury they are returned to the Animal Welfare League Qld to join the rehoming program and be adopted into a permanent home. At any one time we can have over 600 animals in care. Fostering is a great way to help both the AWLQ and animals in need. Join our network of dedicated foster carers by calling (07) 5509 9020 or visit awlqld.com.au/ fostering. AWLQ Tawl Tails Autumn Edition 2018 - Page 3

GETTING

ZERO

Getting 2 Zero Initiatives

Getting 2 Zero In July 2016, we made a promise to never euthanise a sociable, healthy or treatable companion animal in our care. We are extremely pleased that in June 2017 we celebrated a full year of keeping this promise and continue to do so. The Gold Coast is one of the few large Australian cities where the data represents the whole city (in this case, a growing city of more than 560,000 people with an estimated 13,000 - 16,000 new residents coming to the city each year).

AWLQ cares for all the pound animals for City of Gold Coast and receives all unclaimed strays. It also runs the only two shelters on the Gold Coast for animals surrendered by their owners. This provides a unique opportunity to understand the issues and develop solutions to the oversupply of abandoned animals in a whole community. AWLQ has been working with the community saving all healthy animals since 2009, and saving all the treatable animals since 2016 What does ‘healthy’ and ‘treatable’ mean? Healthy animals have no physical or behavioural issues that require intervention by our vets and rehoming team specialists. They just need to be desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, treated

to prevent worms and parasites, and be cared for until they find a home. Treatable animals have a pre-existing illness or physical conditions such as a broken leg, ear infection, cat flu or ringworm, or a behavioural issue (such as timidity or separation anxiety), that needs to be treated or at least managed so they can have quality of life. Saving animals lives can be very challenging and expensive as, on top of the normal preparation for rehoming, they need to stay longer, receive extra veterinary care or behavioural training and often need foster care to be organised until they recover in care. Can you assist us in keeping our promise and help save lives? Call (07) 5509 9000 or visit www. awlqld.com.au/get-involved/ donate.

WE ACHIEVED ZERO EUTHANASIA BY: TEACHING PUBLIC, TAFE STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND SECONDARY STUDENTS HOW TO KEEP ANIMALS HAPPY AND SAFE.

GETTING

ZERO

Getting 2 Zero International Summit In September 2017, G2Z conducted four Workshops - Shelter Animal Behaviour, Social Change, Animal Management and Shelter Medicine with a recordnumber of attendees. The 7th biennial G2Z Summit was AWLQ’s biggest yet and welcomed those from the government, not-forprofit welfare, shelter and rescue sectors, research, academic and veterinary professions and the pet industry. The Summit covered topics ranging from disease control and prevention, reuniting lost pets, to reducing intake and keeping people and their pets together before they need the services of a shelter or pound facility The biennial G2Z Summit presents a wonderful opportunity for Council animal management, shelters, rescue groups, veterinarians, the pet industry and interested community members to connect, learn and network.

International speakers included: Brigid Wasson, President of Missing Pet Partnership, who discussed how owners and finders of lost cats and dogs can be helped to get these lost animals back home. Katenna Jones, animal behaviourist, who has been director of educational programs for the American Association of Professional Dog Trainers, and Animal Behaviourist for the American Humane Association. Katenna presented a full day workshop on effective training and behaviour modification strategies for dogs and

feline carers in shelters, and how to keep cats and dogs in their homes. Dr Aleisha Schwartz, who works with shelters across the United States as Outreach Veterinarian for the University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program, presented creative solutions for prevention and management of disease in shelters, as well as managing free roaming cats in Hawaii. Dr Myles Chadwick, Vice President of Emancipet, presented how his not-for-profit organisation has developed a national, affordable vet care system to serve low income families and their pets.

City of Gold Coast Gets to Zero! At the Summit, AWLQ presented a film on how the City of Gold Coast got to zero! AWLQ’s team of over 160 staff and 3,000 volunteers has been working to achieve an end to the killing of healthy and treatable cats and dogs in a whole city i.e. the City of Gold Coast (population over 560 000). In 2009, AWLQ became the first large shelter in Australia to achieve a zero euthanasia rate of healthy and sociable animals, and in 2016 extended this achievement to treatable animals.

HAPPY TAIL Little Twinkles arrived at our Beenleigh Animal Rehoming Centre as a gorgeous eightweek-old Shih-Tzu. Sadly, Twinkles was born without a radius or ulna in her front legs, severely restricting her mobility. In a bid to improve Twinkles quality of life, AWLQ’s Beenleigh Animal Rehoming Supervisor researched the best way to support Twinkles in gaining more independence and improve her mobility. Happy-go-lucky Twinkles attended a specialist facility where a number of examinations and tests were completed. As Twinkles lacked crucial support bones in her front legs, it was deemed her life would be adversely impacted if she underwent surgery. Armed with this information, and knowing that surgery was not an option for Twinkles; our dedicated team at Beenleigh Animal Rehoming Centre decided that the most practical way to improve Twinkles life would be to acquire a wheelchair for her. The team went about researching ways to purchase a custom-built Australian wheelchair. Unfortunately,

a manufacturer wasn’t able to be located locally and the search broadened to locate an American based wheelchair manufacturer. Gunner’s Wheels – specialists in mobility equipment – agreed to make a wheelchair specifically designed to suit Twinkles size and needs. Jason Parker, founder of Gunner’s Wheels, provides wheelchairs to animals requiring assistance. The inspiration behind Gunner’s Wheels came about when Gunner - Jason’s own dog - was hit by a truck in 2014. The dog suffered two broken vertebrae and was given a 50 percent chance in recovering mobility. Jason made a promise to ‘pay it forward’ and to provide wheelchairs to animals in need. The chairs have been provided to shelter and rescue pets who might have otherwise been euthanised without the assistance of a Gunner’s Wheelchair. Our team at Beenleigh worked with different time zones to communicate with Gunner’s Wheel’s to ascertain Twinkles needs for a wheelchair. Under the direction of Gunner’s Wheels, the Ruff Rollin Company designed and built a wheelchair to

precision specifications. Gunner’s Wheels very generously paid for Twinkles wheelchair to be produced and subsequently shipped to Australia. Twinkles adapted to her new wheelchair and now enjoys life as a dog-on-the -move. We take this opportunity to sincerely thank the incredible kindness of Gunner’s Wheel’s and Ruff Rollin for their compassion and support in helping Twinkles to have a second chance at life. Thank you to our dedicated staff at Beenleigh for persisting in seeking out ways to offer Twinkles a second chance at life.

Twinkles with her new family, Pam & Rob Dent.

(L-R) Carol Fitzgerald - Golden Hearts Member and Ita Buttrose AO OBE - Golden Hearts Ambassador & AWLQ Patron.

On 23 November 2017, we hosted a very special Golden Hearts morning tea – Christmas with Ita. The event was attended by approximately 200 people including Golden Hearts members, special guest Councillors, VIPs and our dedicated staff and volunteers. Also in attendance was our Founding President, Neil Andersen OAM, who recently celebrated his 95th birthday and who continues to be an invaluable and integral source of knowledge and inspiration to our team. Our special guest of honour and Golden Hearts Ambassador - Ita Buttrose AO OBE - kindly travelled from Sydney to be with us. Ita happily spent time meeting the guests and made an exceptionally insightful and heartfelt speech to an audience captivated by every word that the iconic Australian had to say. At Christmas with Ita we were exceedingly proud and honoured to welcome Ita Buttrose as Official Patron of Animal Welfare League Queensland, alongside The Hon.

Michael Kirby AC CMG. Ita will assume the role of Patron in addition to her role as Ambassador of Golden Hearts. Ita’s commitment in highlighting the importance of pet ownership for seniors has been pivotal in making a difference to the lives of the elderly and companion animals and we thank Ita for bringing success to the Golden Hearts Seniors’ Pet Support program and personally attending Christmas with Ita. On behalf of the Board, staff, volunteers and of course all of the animals at AWLQ, we extend our deepest gratitude to Ita for her support of our organisation. We consider it a great privilege for AWLQ to have such a respected and eminent Australian as Ita Buttrose

THANK YOU!

Thank you for your support! Thank you to everyone who supported AWLQ’s 2017 Christmas Appeal. Last Christmas, we shared the sad story of little Trudy. When beautiful Trudy came into our care, our veterinary nurses were shocked to find her urinary bladder was filled with bladder stones. Trudy endured urgent emergency surgery to remove the stones to relieve her from excruciating pain. No animal should ever endure what little Trudy suffered over 10 years and we are honoured that you agreed with us and chose to donate so generously. Sadly, Trudy is one of many thousands of animals who through no fault of their own find themselves abandoned, homeless and requiring urgent treatment.

Trudy was recently adopted and is living happily with her new family and another little dog called Holly.

Together, you helped AWLQ raise vital funds that enabled us to continue providing care to animals just like Trudy. No matter the cost, we will always be there for them. Thank you so much for believing in our work and sharing our vision. Together, we will keep achieving positive outcomes for animals in our care.

The Carousal at Broadbeach is a City of Gold Coast sponsored Rotary project raising funds for the community. AWLQ has added an additional exercise yard at our Gold Coast Rehoming Centre thanks to the efforts of Rotary Club of Southport. Frances Sutor Photography produced a beautiful book full of stunning photos showcasing Brisbane pets and their owners. Thank you so much to Frances who generously presented a gift to AWLQ amounting to $3,015 CCS Insurance Solutions rolled out the red carpet and held its 10th annual client movie night at Event Cinemas with a premiere viewing of the movie Thor Ragnarok. 150 staff and clients successfully raised over $3000.00 Specsavers stores across the country support their communities and give back to charity through the Specsavers Community Program. This initiative raises funds for selected local charities around the country. We are honored that Specsavers Helensvale and Specsavers Arundel have chosen AWLQ as its local charity partner. AWLQ is once again the proud recipient of over $3400.00 in donations from Specsavers. We gratefully thank Gold Coast Private Hospital for generously gifting AWLQ Community Vet Clinics with diagnostic machines. These units of equipment will be used for treatment and diagnosis by our vets in the community vet clinic as well as for animals in our care.

PROJECT EMPTY SHELTER

Project Empty Shelter Our 5th Annual Project Empty Shelter resulted in 196 animals finding a home in time for Christmas! Project Empty Shelter was held on 9 and 10 December 2017 and received unprecedented support from the community, who constantly streamed into our four Animal Rehoming Centres across South East Queensland. AWLQ CEO Denise Bradley said: “The community response has been incredible and it is extremely heartening to know that nearly 200 animals now have new homes – our sincerest thanks go to every family who rehomed an animal.” Project Empty Shelter is an annual initiative. Each year, we hold a weekend long campaign to find loving, forever homes for all our shelter animals in time for Christmas.

This campaign would not be possible without the support of many people and businesses. Enormous thanks goes to AWLQ’s hardworking and dedicated staff and volunteers who give generously of their time to make this flagship campaign possible. Thank you to our Ambassador Jarrod Wallace (Gold Coast Titans) and Brendan Elliot (pictured above)Young Ambassador Thorne Lyons, who all lent a helping hand at Project Empty Shelter - your presence at the event was greatly appreciated.

Once again, we were overwhelmed with the support from our community. We are delighted to report that all four centres had a wonderfully positive response to this signature campaign. To all who adopted during Project Empty Shelter, you not only saved the life of the pet you adopted, you also freed a place for another animal to come into the shelter.

REHOMING UPDATE The Gold Coast Rehoming Centre provides essential support to all our facilities in the form of specialised veterinary services and increased connection with potential owners. AWLQ’s Foster to Adopt program continues to be a success. This program allows pets to be fostered by potential adopters to see how they fit with their family before committing to adoption. This helps for adult dogs and cats find homes who may otherwise be overlooked in favour of a kitten or puppy. Owners benefit from the program as they get additional time to bond with their new pet before making the important decision to permanently adopt. In 2017, 102 adult cats and 397 adult dogs found permanent

homes through the Foster to Adopt program at Coombabah. AWLQ continues to develop and implement enrichment and treatment programs to assist pets while in care, and help them find homes faster.

GOLD C OAST

BEENLEIGH REHOMING CENTRE Farm animals are rehomed as companion pets to suitable homes with owners who have an understanding of their special requirements. The redevelopment of our Rehoming and Administration office continues to assist in providing improved products and services. The dog rehoming area has been renovated by City of Gold Coast to provide a comfortable environment while they wait for their new homes. Our Beenleigh Rehoming Centre is vital in providing care to new mums

with puppies. The whelping room gives new mothers the opportunity to focus on their puppies and have time out. Once the puppies are old enough they join the Puppy Raising Program to start the next phase of their lives and help transition them into new homes. PUPS ON SUPS Paddlers and dog lovers alike flocked to Currumbin Creek for Surfing Queensland’s inaugural 2017 Pups on SUPs event in October.

n o S P PU SUPS

A picture perfect spring day saw hundreds of competitors and spectators, along with their furry friends take to the water to compete in the event. AWLQ was delighted to be chosen by Surfing Queensland as its main charity partner for the event. Over $5,000 was raised thanks to a partnership with MBA in which $5,000 was donated (on top of $574 raised from entry fees and donations). The 2017 Pups on SUPs event was supported by EzyDog, The Queensland Government, Vetshop Australia, Australian Skin Cancer Clinics, Connecting Southern

Gold Coast, HIF, Coastalwatch Plus, Surfing World, SurfAid, Pages, Surfing Queensland and Surfing Australia. AWLQ is thrilled to report that the funds raised from the event will be used to care for stray, abandoned and homeless animals who are waiting to find their forever home.

D N A L S N E E U Q RAIL

Armed with dogs and donation tins, we offered early morning commuters the opportunity to pat and cuddle with dogs on their way to work. We were overwhelmed with the community’s response to our visit with so many travellers taking time out from their busy morning to stop and talk to our staff and volunteers about the many services AWLQ offer in our community. Thank you so much to the many people who stopped to chat with us and donated much needed funds in our collection tins. We raised over $2,000 which will immediately be used to benefit animals in our care.

In January this year, AWLQ staff and volunteers as well as some four pawed friends, Mr Clooney, Lucy and Rusty visited Central Station in Brisbane to spread some puppy joy to commuters on their way to work.

Thank you to our wonderful supporters at Queensland Rail who generously supported and facilitated this wonderful event on our behalf. We are so grateful for their ongoing support.
