Cost of Motherhood

B

eing a mother is hard Sometimes you work from dawn to dusk as if it's a full-time job Get scars in endless brawls as you hustle or even rob To provide and take good care of your beautiful family Which you hold dear to your heart and desire to live happily. Being a mother is hard Sometimes you are on your knees, praying For kids to have good health and education despite the difficulties of the day Or their father to return and help in guiding them through murky waters of life Because you can't hold them alone together and carry their burden-You see, one finger cannot kill a louse.

Being a mother is hard Sometimes you don't sleep, because kids are sick or haven't eaten Sometimes you are beaten to pulp and insulted by the man you loved When they err and everyone turns against them But you stay to carry their cross, for you can't let them grow or perish without a mom No mother lets her kids suffer when she is breathing still! Being a mother is hard Sometimes you walk naked like a mad person To provide something for kids to conceal their nakedness and sleep on Sometimes you suck their blocked noses, to clean them up and help them breathe fresh life Sometimes you don't sleep, to ensure they aren't stung by mosquitoes or have bad dreams Because their joy and well-being are your pride. Being a mother is hard Sometimes you are a teacher Of morals, numbers and philosophy And a strict disciplinarian, to shape their character and brighten their future For a foolish child is a burden to its mother!

The Vows of Love

By Luvala Calvin (Wandering Mind)

You are the sweetest being that I have ever met, I love how you make me feel, Infinite eruptions of pure bliss, I love surfing and getting lost, In the ocean of your gorgeous beaming set of eyes, Your radiant smile subdues the cold inside me, Setting my heart into a blaze, Flares of passion warming my whole being, I love the glow on your face when you're happy, Brighter than the noon summer sunYou charm my mornings with your beautiful smiles, My love, Today I set out on a journey, I have never been here before but I promise, I promise not to leave any room for mistakes to slip through, I promise always to make your cheeks hurtFrom plenty laughter and happiness.

Come walk by me in this long stretch journey, I promise not to letYour feet get weary and sore, I have not an automobile yet, But I will sweat it offTo carry you to where the Almighty has destined us for. So, today I take you as a part of me, Scribbling your name against mineIn the books of the landAnd in the book of our Almighty, I accept you as my companion in this journey, I confide my affection in you, Today, I let my heart pour out of immense joy, In broad shine of day, I give my heart to you, I accept you as my darling wife.

I will cling to youAs the skies cling round the mute earth forever beautiful, I promise to head us how it is expectedAnd lead us how He leadth me too, My love, your pillar in your worst of days I will be, I promise to share in your sorrows, And lift us up whenever you fall, Our family's shield I will be too, For mine you are and forever a part of me. I want you to know that I am not perfect either, With all my imperfectionsI will perfect myself to be the best for you always, Whenever I slipHold me by hand and I'll dust myself up In you is where I draw my strength from, Your hand in mine marching to a happy us. Darling,

Tuacheni uhasama, Kenya yetu iwe wina, Ikibidi ukachoma, heri ukachome nyama, Kama kupiga lazima, piga kura ya salama, Kwetu vema tumekaa, na hatutaki balaa. Wana tunayo tamaa, mbeleni kwetu kunag'ara, Viongozi kiandaa, wenye utu na busara, Usoni sije kuchakaa, tusalie matambara, Kwetu vema tumekaa, na hatutaki balaa. Ndugu zetu twawapenda, ngazi pamoja tapanda, Sisi bado tu makinda, tafurahi kitulinda, Mbele sote tunaenda, wenye kocho twawashinda Kwetu vema tumekaa, na hatutaki balaa. Hebu acha kuzubaa, si wakenya tunapaa, Kotekote tunang’aa, sifa bora tumetwaa, Pepo lipi mekuvaa, we hutaki kutufaa?

What is

S

taring into space and losing pockets of time for no apparent reason? Feeling tired having just woken up, moody and grumpy without any cause for your soreness? Do you desire to crawl back into bed and not make any effort to do any chores as you just feel your moods are not in it? Are you finding yourself busier or over working not because it is your job but because you’d rather not stop? Well, there’s a simple explanation for that. You might just be one out of every four people in the world facing mental health problems. The recent call for awareness into matters mental health has helped put a face behind the monster that has haunted our homes in silent dread. This monster that for a long time in black domiciles was believed to be caused by wicked ancestral spirit and witchcraft or supernatural powers beyond our realm has now been demystified.

health?

our mental health determines how we dress, how we eat, how we relate to others Anyone can suffer from mental health disorders and more so, black people do also fall in this category. We are not infallible to this. So, therefore, what is mental health? Mental health refers to a person’s general well-being. This concerns our emotional, psychological and social state over a duration of time. These states usually affect how we think, feel, reason and act as they pertain to our mindset. In simple, our mental health determines how we dress, how we eat, how we relate to others, whether we like things or not within an acceptable frame of reference, the types of choices we make, how we deal with pressure and stress or even just our moods, whether we shall be happy or not.

There are several types of mental health disorders. We have anxiety disorder: where we worry or are anxious of every- Winnie Mang’ich thing happening to us or is around us. In this disorder, there is no settling or peace. Clinical depression refers to being down or depressed, feeling sad or blue without an explanation. It is characterized by loss of interest in anything in our lives. Bipolar disorder refers to sever changes in moods that can be manic or simply unresponsive. Dementia is characterized by perpetual forgetfulness of certain issues, Schizophrenia: imbalance in thoughts, emotional and actions. A literature graduate from The university of nairobi

Post traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) is where a traumatic event scars us for life while Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by obsessively identifying with an issue and replicating it in our behavior. Autism, Attention-deficit disorder or Hyperactivity disorder are also some types of mental illnesses. Mental health can be determined by factors genetic or brain chemistry. This means that if we have the gene disorder for mental health, we can either be carriers or sufferers. Our brain chemistry may also simply misfire and cause us to experience the spectrum of mental health disorders because of the protein imbalance or chemical imbalance.

Positive mental health can be achieved by having mentors who can guide and counsel on how to deal with certain problematic situations, getting professional help if needed and looking at it as a medical consultation rather than a death sentence. Life experiences such as trauma or abuse can also cause mental health disorders. Our minds have the unique ability to store events that are life altering and fire up synapses to warn whenever we find ourselves in a similar situation. These synapses are the so called ‘red flags’ people exhibit. Family history of mental breakdowns may also be a cause as it prompts victims at specific turns to fall into the same pitfalls. Other causes may be environmental issues, unhealthy habits, drug or alcohol abuse and negative thoughts or being pessimistic all the time. With the rise in inflation thereby leading to expensive goods and services in the market, increased retrenchments and lay-offs, poor health care alternatives and difficulty in finding or even maintaining a job, social pressure, social media frenzy, lack of mentoring to deal with stressful situations or problems, susceptibility to stress, lack of imagination and mediocrity of character; the current generation finds itself at a cross roads with mental health problems. We are inherently misbehaving and blaming it on stress, making poor judgments and calling it life, failing short of our expectations or squeezing ourselves into lifestyles way above our paygrade then falling through the cracks of our society to end up in depression or suffering other mental health issues. Though these are just but some of our own causes, there’s the other side which is justified and honest in its suffering

Be it either biological factors or life experiences causing your mental issue, one deserves to understand why and how they can be helped. The early signs of mental health problems are mostly inclusive of these but not exclusive to: having eating or sleeping disorders. One may find themselves sleeping often or experiencing insomnia. This is indicative of not wanting to either face your problems or not being able to disassociate from your troubles for a while or shut down your brain for sleep. Withdrawing from friends and loved ones, having low energy or no energy to engage in favorite pastimes, feeling helpless and hopeless in all situations, increased drug and alcohol use, being in pain all the time, feeling confused, overwhelmed, forgetful, angry, worried and sacred without cause. Having persistent thoughts that are recurrent in your head or wishes of self-harm, inability to carry out normal daily activities, tasks or duties, sever mood swings and feeling numb are just but some of the early signs to watch out for when trying to identify a mental health sufferer. Positive mental health can be achieved by having mentors who can guide and counsel on how to deal with certain problematic situations, getting professional help if needed and looking at it as a medical consultation rather than a death sentence. Connecting with friends and loved ones can help pull us back from the brink of insanity, staying positive helps in uplifting our attitude and improves our disposition therefore making us hopeful. Being physically active allows the body to build and train itself to care for itself. Getting enough sleep though rhetoric is a sure way of keeping the problems at bay as the brain gets rested and is not overworked. All in all, let us avoid zoning mental health problems as “white issues or rich kid problems” as they affect all of us. Recognizing the symptoms early in advance can save a life as it enables one to reach out for help. We should not be ashamed or embarrassed of crying out and saying, “It is too much!”. Judgements should be beneath us. We should only hope that one cries out for salvation before the curtain closes on their dreams and aspirations.

He, therefore, devotes himself to his teachers and parents for their incessant support of his talent. Divine Chinamasa is one talented kid who has a bright future in front of her with regards to visual artistry. Indeed, it is quite humbling to get to interview such a young and focused mind who knows what she wants out of life. That said, Divine is a 12 year old Zimbabwean who is doing sixth grade at the Little Hearts Christian college. Equally, if you are a parent to such a gifted child like Divine you should support your kid hundred percent because at this early age this is when one will carve out the path he or she will eventually follow in life. Consequently, it is very crucial to be part and parcel of the self-discovery journey of your child like what Divine’s mother is doing. For that reason, this is why it is stated there is no greater and softer love like that of a mother. With regards to Divine, she lives in Norton. Also, her friends are Shalom Chinamasa, Rehoboth and Bethel Bizure to name but just a few. Interestingly, given that Divine is a Christian some of her drawings are inspired by biblical stories like that of baby Jesus. Personally, this is why l view Divine as a gifted angel because the maturity of her drawings is surreal. Following this same line of thinking, Divine’s hobbies are painting, drawing, singing and playing the keyboard. Going down memory lane, Divine highlighted that her passion for drawing started when she saw other kids doing so at church and school events although l would like to believe this is an inborn talent that she could not shake off even if she wanted to. As a result, Divine hopes to be a celebrated visual artist when she grows up. To all intents and purposes, Divine is a determined child with a vision therefore it proves we should catch them young and mentor these African children up until they realize their dreams. Accordingly, nothing is impossible in this lifetime if you believe in yourself just like Divine does. Without no shadow of doubt, Africa as a whole should support such artistry. Below are some of Divine’s drawings which she lovingly drew. All in all, l can safely say blessed are those who are able to use their gifts for the betterment of inspiring human kind

A Premature Sunset

(for Innocent Bukhuni; long-listed for the Babishai Niwe Poetry Prize 2018) when a giant, aged iroko tree falls in our homestead we don’t cry bitterly, for the nestlings left in the cold would be mature enough to endure the jungle heat & hunger; but when dry thunder strikes a blossoming palm tree, and sips its life with cruelty excruciating pain grips our hearts, and tears blind our eyes. I fumbled to gather my little fragments, scattered on the beach by the blast of news of your untimely exit as angry waves sped away with your breath– echoing afar like a dying song of childhood memories, we sang whilst playing in mama’s kitchen I remembered your forest of dreams, lying fallow for eternity and blood froze in my veins You withered in our hands, a young shoot– just stretching out of the testa without warning us, to measure new suits for the festivity! so in silence the sun, moon and the stars communed and agreed to disappear from the map of the sky for a while to ease the pain of witnessing a premature shoot swallowed by the soil the sky wept bitterly, wetting us in vulnerable places; But we stood still, arrested by your unmoving eyes to let you– the only dancer to bow out before the sounding of the last drum go in honour.

It is treasured but rarely measured For wisdom and counsel preferred A costly, seasoned and sure stature To some a blessing with epic measure To others an omen upon not to venture Good old gold age: Ideal for every sage Golden not for being But golden for seeing; Golden not for saying But golden in saying; Golden not for staying But golden in staying Can we measure it? Should we treasure it? Could we prefer it? Will we attain it? Still, old age is golden.

Love M

y mane is Alsandra Jumo aka Ajkvoxy. I am 22 years old. I am a song writer plus i do poetry too. I ventured into this journey when I was 17 that is in form 4 at Mkoba 1 high in Gweru Zimbabwe. One of my goals is to address issues that cause havoc in the communities so that we can come up with solutions at the end of the day.

Like a seed germinates. Like a child walking. Taking every step softly. Staggering and shivering. But always watching where he steps. Always a sun rises in the east and sets on the west. Follow the procedure but not rush them. Always watch ahead because yesterday is gone.
