PART-TIME POSSIBILITIES... Do you want TO learn a new skill? Are you keen to take the next step at work? Looking for promotion? Is it time for a career change? Or do you just want to have some fun and try something new? If you answered “Yes!” to any of these questions, then we can help. Taking a course might not cost as much as you think! We offer a range of concessions for individuals claiming various benefits and for those who aren’t eligible for concessions we have bursaries and subsidised loans available to help too. See page 6 for more information.
What do we offer? Whatever your reasons for considering a part time course, whether for professional or personal development, we have a wide selection of courses available in a range of delivery modes. From leisure courses and professional accredited courses to honours degrees, here’s a guide to the types of courses on offer:
Access to Higher Education
This is the ideal first step if you have not studied for a while or perhaps don’t have many formal qualifications but are interested in a higher education course. You will learn study skills and have the opportunity to top up your knowledge in your chosen subject before committing to a degree course.
Apprenticeships
Apprentices do real jobs for real employers so you earn while you learn. As an apprentice you’ll have a great support structure through the College and your employer, gain recognised qualifications and get the best possible start to a career you will love.
Foundation Degrees / Higher National certificates and Diplomas (HNc/D)
These are industry relevant programmes that will equip you with the higher level skills and knowledge required by employers today. They are equivalent to the first two years of an honours degree and in most cases you can progress onto the third year of an honours degree
locally. Our Foundation Degrees are offered in partnership with Oxford Brookes University.
GCSEs
We offer GCSE courses in small classes and a teaching environment very different from school. Our aim is to enable you to progress onto other courses such as a Diploma or Access to Higher Education courses.
Honours Degrees
We have a range of honours degrees offered in partnership with Oxford Brookes University. If you are looking for lower fees, the convenience of studying for your degree locally, small class sizes and a personalised approach, then Abingdon and Witney College is the perfect choice.
Leisure Courses
We have a broad range of hobby and general interest courses if you want to try something new, develop your knowledge of a subject, or perhaps want to meet new, like-minded people. Learn for leisure or you could use your new knowledge to progress onto another course.
We have a wide selection of courses available in a range of delivery modes. There are evening classes, bespoke programmes, fast track and even Saturday courses.
Professional Courses
Internationally recognised, professional courses accredited by organisations such as the Association of Accounting Technicians and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development will support your application for membership of professional bodies and can help fast track your career.
Vocational Courses
These are work-related qualifications with an emphasis on developing practical skills in your chosen industry. You undertake work related projects and get opportunities for fantastic work experience throughout. Vocational courses prepare you for progression to Higher Education, employment or use your new skills to start up your own business!
If you’re unsure about entry requirements or have queries about your application, you can find more details on our website or you can talk to the Student Services team on 01235 555585 or email enquiries@abingdon-witney.ac.uk

The College is also fully committed to its duty to ensure, so far as it is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all staff. It is compulsory to wear ID cards issued to you by the College whilst on campus.
Student Enrichment
I have been a student at the college for the past two years and have received a fantastic amount of support from the Student Services team. Student Services are very helpful and friendly and they are always willing to answer any questions. I have been working with Euan McCall, who has supported me on various occasions over the last two years. He helped me apply for universities which were suitable for me and my future and we went over my personal statement numerous times until we thought it was perfect as I am applying for a very competitive course and it was important I made a great impression. Euan also helped me with my student finance application.
There’s more to college life than just studying! Check out the student enrichment programme which offers a mix of sports clubs and student societies including rugby, athletics, badminton, yoga, guitar tuition, movie club and The Beat – our own student radio station.
I would strongly recommend anyone who is need of any extra support or guidance to go to the Student Services team.

Help with fees Taking a course may not cost as much as you think! Don’t let finances hold you back from achieving your career goals. Depending on your circumstances, there are bursary schemes available to help you with travel, childcare or the day-to-day costs of studying. You could also be eligible for a reduction on course fees or a loan. See the table below for where fee concessions apply.
Confused about what support you are eligible for? Give us a call and we can talk you through your options.
Aged 16-18 at the beginning of the academic year (31/08/14)
All qualification based courses are free to 16 – 18 year olds. Some leisure courses may incur a fee. If the course description states “No concession” then 16 – 18 year old learners must also pay the fee for this course.
Aged 19-23 at the start date of your course
A fee reduction is available on many of our courses. If a fee reduction is available this is indicated against the course information. Reductions are available if you fall into one or more of the following categories: • Level 1 – You require a Level 1 or entry level qualification in order to progress to Level 2 • Level 2 – You have previously not achieved a Level 2 qualification and the course you wish to attend is a FULL Level 2* qualification • Level 3 – You have previously not achieved a Level 3 qualification and the course you wish to attend is a FULL Level 3* qualification • GCSE Maths or English – If you wish to study on our GCSE Maths or English courses and you have not previously achieved a grade C in the relevant subject • Job Seekers Allowance – You are in receipt of job seekers allowance during the period of study • ESA (WRAG) – You are in receipt of ESA during the period of study • Universal Credit – You are in receipt of Universal Credit during the period of study • Unemployed – You are unemployed and on a wider, relevant benefit (income support, housing benefit, contribution based ESA or Tax Credits for the unemployed) and need to complete the qualification in order to gain employment.
Aged 24 and above at the start of your course (courses below Level 3)
A fee reduction is available on many of our courses. If a fee reduction is available this is indicated against the course information. Reductions are available to people who fall into one or more of the following categories: • Job Seekers Allowance – You are in receipt of job seekers allowance during the period of study • ESA (WRAG) – You are in receipt of ESA during the period of study • Universal Credit – You are in receipt of Universal Credit during the period of study • Unemployed – You are unemployed and on a wider, relevant benefit (income support, housing benefit, contribution based ESA or Tax Credits for the unemployed) and need to complete the qualification in order to gain employment • GCSE Maths or English – If you wish to study on our GCSE Maths or English courses and you have not previously achieved a grade C in the relevant subject.
Aged 24 and above at the start of your course (courses at Level 3 and above)
Learners aged 24 and above who wish to enrol for Level 3 (or higher) courses are not entitled to any fee concessions. However, you are entitled to apply for a subsidised loan which will cover the full cost of the course. The loan means that you will not have to pay fees before you enrol and you will only have to start repaying the loan after you finish the course if you earn more than £21,000 per year. Bursaries are also available for some learners who have taken out a loan so you could have even more help with fees than you first thought.
* Full Level 2 and full Level 3 courses are indicated by the following symbols d – Full Level 2 B – Full Level 3

www.abingdon-witney.ac.uk
• Please note that you must provide evidence and you must enrol in person if you wish to claim a reduction in fees. • The fee in the prospectus may not necessarily cover any materials or kit type fees that are required as part of your course. Please enquire if any additional materials are required. • Students in receipt of full fee remission are not charged tuition or exam fees or any compulsory materials fees for enrolling with Abingdon and Witney College. Where a fee is payable, this will be for materials that can be used outside of College or for re-sit fees in examinations. • Fees listed in this course guide do not apply to applicants without a permanent right to remain in the UK. Fee information for these applicants will be provided on application. Please note that you may be required to complete a fee assessment in order for us to ascertain your residency status. • The 24+ learner’s fee in the prospectus covers the cost for the full duration of the course. All other fees are payable each year. • We want to make learning accessible to everyone. If you don’t qualify for a concession, but have genuine difficulty in paying your course fees, you may be eligible for a Learner Support Fund. Please contact one of our qualified advisers on 01235 216308 or 01235 216439 or email advice@abingdon-witney.ac.uk
I would highly recommend the 24+ loan to anyone wishing to get back into education but is worried about finances. The application process is really simple and without the loan I wouldn’t have been able to come back to college. I am now planning to go on to study Engineering at degree level, once I have completed my diploma. Lee Tustain, 90 Credit Diploma in Engineering at Abingdon campus.
Are you over 24 years old and thinking about taking a Level 3 course? You can apply for a subsided loan which covers the full cost of the course. You won’t need to repay the loan until you are earning over £21,000 per year and won’t need to pay any fees upfront.

Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are a great first step onto the career ladder. You will have real work experience, qualifications and employer references that will set you above the rest when applying for jobs.
If you want to get on the road to a great career, earn money whilst learning and gain recognised qualifications, then you should consider an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes and a great alternative if you don’t want to study full time at college.
Best of both worlds
As an apprentice you’ll earn a wage from day one and gain valuable practical experience in your chosen profession. At the same time, you continue your training and education by studying for qualifications including vocational skills and Maths, English and ICT.
Training designed to suit you
You will have your own programme of learning designed to suit you and your employer. Learning is mostly work-based, however some qualifications involve classroom delivery and this can take place at College or on employer premises. Your employer, assessor and the College will provide you with structured support to help you to success.
Flexible start dates
Your apprenticeship will start at either Intermediate or Advanced Level, and the programme takes on average 1-2 years to complete. Some courses start in September each year but other courses have flexible start dates. Apprentices need to be in employment for a minimum of 30 hours per week. If you do not already have suitable employment then we can help you to find a position.
Apprenticeships available in: Accounting Business Administration cleaning and support services Construction Customer Service Engineering Graphic Design Horticulture IT Laboratory Technicians Management Marketing Motor Vehicle retail SAles and telesales warehousing and logistics
Where will an apprenticeship take you?
Apprenticeships are a great first step onto the career ladder. You will have real work experience, qualifications and employer references that will set you above the rest when applying for jobs. Or you could progress to a Higher Apprenticeship (Level 4/5) or on to a higher education course.
Jemma Parsloe is an Apprentice Centre Support Assistant at Witney Business and Innovation Centre. In 2014 Jemma became Witney Business and Innovation Centres’ (BIC) first Apprentice Centre Support Assistant, a varied role that requires interaction with a variety of
businesses located at the centre in addition to working on reception, providing PA services and helping with social media for the centre team.
“I’m so happy to have been appointed as the apprentice. It’s the opportunity I needed to get into this type of work.” Stephanie Henwood, Centre Manager, Witney BIC, said: “I’m delighted with our choice in Jemma who has already become a fantastic asset to the team in addition to the support provided by the college throughout the entire process. Importantly, Jemma’s appointment is also part of our ongoing commitment to providing students with the core skills they need to succeed in business through our Futures Partnership.” Stephanie Henwood welcomes apprentice Gemma Parsloe to Witney Business & Innovation Centre
