Student of the Year Awards 2023 One brilliant opportunity for us to celebrate and share the incredible achievements of our students is our annual Student of the Year awards, held in the grand surroundings of Blenheim Palace. Every year, students, staff, family, and friends attend Student of the Year and hear from our Heads of Faculty about student successes, the challenges students have faced and have overcome, and many other inspiring stories which have led to them being shortlisted for either an Overall Achievement Award or Outstanding Performance Award.

Each of the College’s eleven faculties select two winners whose contribution to their class, dedication to their coursework or apprenticeship, or effort to overcome adversity is recognised.
Nataliia is from Kharkiv, Ukraine and came for an interview at Abingdon & Witney College just a few days after arriving in the UK. Despite the unthinkable upheaval she has been through, Nataliia was keen to restart her education and apply to study Fine Art at University in September.
This year’s Overall Student of the Year Award went to Nataliia Ryzhova, who was on the Creative Arts Level 2 Study Programme.
We are delighted and extremely proud that Nataliia was offered a place on the prestigious fine art: drawing course at UAL Camberwell.

Apprenticeship Success Leah is a Level 3 Business Administration Apprentice working with the Public Engagement team at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in Didcot. She began her apprenticeship in September 2022 after finishing her A Levels in Maths, Biology, and Chemistry, and deciding to take an alternative route to university. Since starting her position, Leah has consistently gone above and beyond; helping to run workshops, engage guests with the STFC, and work with students across the UK in STFC Laboratories. In March 2023, Leah won our Apprentice of the Month award. She was later recognised with an Outstanding Performance Award at the 2023 Student of the Year Award ceremony.

Student Wins Internship Having successfully completed a Level 3 animal management course at Common Leys Farm campus, Abingdon & Witney College student Jago was offered a place on a 6-month live-in internship at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, near Burford in West Oxfordshire!
Seven students have short stories published In the Autumn of 2022, seven of our GCSE English students had their short stories selected to be published in ‘Integer’; this year’s book published by the Young Writers organisation.

At Abingdon & Witney College we work with a range of employers across a wide variety of businesses, such as hairdressers, IT services, groundskeepers, electricians, nurseries, care homes and more.

Jargon Buster A Level This is a two-year course with an assessment at the end. Most students take three subjects. These are often a traditional entry route to university or a career/ apprenticeship and are not offered at Abingdon & Witney College. Apprenticeships Ideal if you want to earn as you learn; an apprenticeship is an excellent way to gain training and qualifications combined with practical skills and workplace experience. You can do apprenticeships through to degree level (See pages 34-35 for more information). Core – For Study Programmes Our Core Programme sits alongside all our vocational qualification, and helps students develop a variety of skills to help them to prepare for their next step (see page 24). Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) An EHC plan is a legally binding document outlining a child or teenager's special educational, health, and social care needs. These are often necessary to access Special Education Needs courses such as our Pathways programmes. Electively Home Educated (EHE) For children who have been educated at home, our Gateway programme is often the most appropriate place to start an education at Abingdon & Witney College.

Further Education Autism Specialist Team (FEAST) FEAST lead the College’s Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) support programme (see page 27).
Progress Coach A member of staff working with an individual student to monitor their attendance, achievement, workload, and wellbeing.
Further Education (FE) This is the name given to post-16 education that is not university or degree-level. Abingdon & Witney is a Further Education College, with some Higher Education courses!
ProPortal A software programme used by Abingdon & Witney College to record a student’s attendance targets, achievement and managing tutorials etc. Students access this through our website.
Higher Education (HE) This is the name given to education and training (including apprenticeships) that is offered at degree level (Level 4 and above) by universities and higher education institutions. Abingdon & Witney College offers both Further Education and Higher Education courses in partnership with Oxford Brookes University. Industry Placement As part of a Level 3 vocational course, students will be expected to undertake an Industry Placement, on T Levels this is an integral part of the programme and is mandatory to achieve their qualification. Industry Placement Co-ordinators Staff based in specific curriculum areas, providing support to students in securing a suitable placement, and any work-based skills assessment that is necessary. Next of Kin (NOK) It is necessary for the College to have the name and telephone number of a family member/carer so that we have an up-to-date contact, should we need to use it.
Safeguarding A term used in the United Kingdom and Ireland to denote measures to protect the health, wellbeing, and human rights of an individual. Student Advisor A staff member working with an individual student to monitor their wellbeing and help to them make the most of their time at College. Study programme A study programme consists of core qualifications (GCSEs or vocational pathway, if working towards a Grade 4+), English and maths study (if a grade 4 has not been achieved), tutorials, work experience and enrichment. Study Coaches A Study Coach offers one-to-one, or small group support with areas like English, maths, study skills and assignments. Vocational course A course designed to provide you with the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge needed for a specific job or career. They can be offered at various levels, for example: T Levels are vocational courses at Level 3.

Qualifications VOCATIONAL QUALI
FICATIONS
Our vocational courses are a world away from what you may have experienced at school. At College, you can gain a nationally recognised qualification, real-world practical experience, and be taught by industry experts using state-of-the-art facilities. The government has not released T Levels for all subjects, so we still offer a range of vocational qualifications which are validated by other providers, including University of the Arts, London and Pearson.
Vocational courses - We’re just as passionate about our subjects as you are! An apprenticeship is a real job which allows you to learn, gain experience of work, and get paid along the way. We make sure all the employers that we work with set our apprentices up as a proper employee, with a contract of employment and holiday leave. By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have the skills, knowledge, and experience you need to take the next step towards your chosen career. We work with a huge range of businesses in Oxfordshire from sole traders to some of the largest employers in the County, here are a few you might have heard of: Blenheim Palace, University of Oxford, Oxfordshire County Council, BMW Mini Plant Oxford, Williams Advanced Engineering, Airbus Helicopters, DAF Trucks, Nielsen IQ, Diamond Light Source, JSP, and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Our Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications are all one-year programmes, and our Level 3 courses are all two-years long. All our courses can be completed alongside a retake of either English or maths GCSEs as long as all other entry requirements have been met.
APPRENTICESHIPS
We get some of the best results for our apprentices in the Country. For those apprentices that get all the way through their apprenticeship programme, our overall pass rate is 96.5%, with 84.3% passing their End Point Assessment on the first try and 31% achieving the highest possible grade – a distinction.
T LEVELS T Levels are the newest type of vocational qualification, developed with businesses to ensure the content meets the needs of industry, and prepares students for work, apprenticeships (including degree apprenticeships), or application to university, (most universities accept T Levels). One T Level is equivalent to three A Levels and a T Level Distinction* is worth the same number of UCAS points as 3A*s at A Level. All T Level students work on an industry placement for at least nine weeks as part of their course. This gives them the opportunity to practice what they’ve learnt in the real world, and experience what a career in their chosen industry is really like.

We know that English and maths aren’t everyone’s favourite subjects, but they will be important to your future whether you want to progress your education further at college, find an apprenticeship, get a job, or go to university. Whatever your starting point when you join college, if you need support, we’re here for you and will give you the best possible chance to leave us with the skills you need to succeed!

Intelligent technology
Making English and maths relevant to you
Functional skills
GCSE English and maths are the foundation of many careers and educational pathways. We teach these subjects in a completely different way from what you might have experienced at school and as a result we help many of our students to achieve a grade 4 or higher if they hadn’t quite got there at school.
It’s important to us that you understand what you’re learning and why it’s important. That’s why we tailor your English and maths lessons to make them relevant to your course. So for example, if you’re learning about dyeing hair, then we might focus on ratios to help with colour mixing.
Once you enrol on your course you’ll have access to Century, a software package that uses learning science, AI, and neuroscience to continually support your progress in English and maths. It can pinpoint your strengths and areas for improvement, adapting and providing the additional support you need, as you progress through your course. We’re always looking for the best ways to help our students build their confidence in English and maths and that might mean starting with a functional skills course. That’s why our Access to Learning programmes are tailored to support individuals based on their personal needs, as we enable them to access the learning that is right for them. Students on these programmes have experienced a range of challenges. They may have missed elements at school, have EHCPs, specific SEND issues, or more complex needs. Our Fast Forward programme is designed for those who are not quite ready for a vocational course. This programme is designed to help you make quick progress with key skills that will help you progress onto a vocational qualification (see page 61).

Our award-winning Gateway Team offer a student-led programme aimed at 14-18 years old who are not currently in education, employment or training (see page 65).
Pathways

Agriculture As a student on an agriculture course, every day will bring exciting and diverse learning opportunities. Our hands-on courses provide year-round opportunities for you to be practical, get outdoors, and to be involved in the action. During your time at College, you will care for our livestock including sheep, cattle, pigs, and poultry, and learn essential theoretical knowledge and effective management techniques. To ensure you feel confident in a land-based role, we organise plenty of chances for you to get to grips with modern farm technology and equipment. You can get involved with activities such as pregnancy testing our farm Sows or preparing and maintaining the College land with our All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklifts (RTFLs).

Fine Art
If you are unsure about what to specialise in, this course provides students with a diverse education in the principles of visual expression and creativity. Through hands-on projects and theoretical learning, students will gain the skills and knowledge needed to explore various art forms; from painting and sculpture to graphic design and digital media, fostering their artistic abilities and creative thinking.
Develop your creative interests across a diverse range of media and materials including painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture. The contextual studies and theory units integrate directly into the fine art specialism.
Ceramics The ceramics specialism offers students the opportunity to further hone their ceramic knowledge and skillset with an aim to develop as a practising artist, or progress to a higher level of study at degree level.
Graphic Design Graphic design is an evolving industry with exciting career prospects. This specialism combines digital and traditional methods to develop skills and knowledge relating to visual language, such as branding, typography, and packaging while using industry standard software such as Adobe InDesign and Illustrator.
Fashion Choose Fashion, one of the most dynamic and creative careers on offer. Turn your ideas into style books, garments, and media collections and take your artistic flair to new levels. In this specialism, contextual studies and theory units are integrated with the practical sessions throughout the course.
Illustration
The illustration course offers aspiring artists a comprehensive exploration of visual storytelling through a variety of mediums, teaching them to bring ideas to life with creativity and skill. Students will learn to master the techniques of illustration, from traditional hand-drawing to digital tools, such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; enabling them to communicate concepts, emotions, and narratives effectively through visuals.
Interior Design
In this specialism, students explore Interior Design and Architecture concepts through critical thinking, drawing and making, whilst studying contextual studies and theory which is integrated with the practical units throughout the course.

Beauty Therapy & Make-Up Artistry We want to ensure that all our students qualify with plenty of experience in their pocket. That’s why we train our students in professional salons, open to the public, with real-life clients. Whether you want to embark on a career in makeup, work with clients as a beautician, or take on a more behind the scenes role working to develop products, our diverse and hands-on courses can help you get there. Throughout your time at College, we will ensure you have plenty of opportunities to practise and hone your skills in a variety of environments. All our students undertake placements and have the chance to take part in exciting national competitions, and local projects such as doing the makeup of local prom students, and preparing actors for a sold-out show at The Oxford Playhouse.
EXCITING TRIPS In 2023, our Beauty students embarked on a two-week trip to Thailand, funded by the Turing Scheme. Over the two weeks students learnt everything they needed to know about authentic Thai Massage in order to pass their practical and theory exams. Whilst in Bangkok, the group visited an elephant sanctuary and local floating markets, celebrated a birthday on the beach, and visited Wat Arun, a Buddhist temple on the Chao Phraya River. Level

Business Our specialist business lecturers have gained national industry recognition and know what is needed to guide, support, and work with you to develop your skills and knowledge. Our business courses cover marketing, customer service, recruitment and selection, finance, retail, and much more. To inspire you through your learning, we organise a variety of experiences outside the classroom, including our annual Venture Vortex event, trips, guest speakers, and live briefs. We also offer the Management and Administration T Level, where you can expand your knowledge of business behaviours, and people and project management. Carpentry & Joinery As a carpentry & joinery student you will work with specialist tutors to master new tools and build your experience and skills. Our courses offer hands-on learning, where you can develop your practical skills with the support and guidance of our tutors when you need it. You will learn how to carry out fixing operations, set up and use fixed and transportable machinery, and the essential principles of organisation to help you efficiently plan, price, and complete your work. As you progress through each topic, you will also cover essential health & safety regulations and lead on your own projects, watching your creative ideas take shape. Your projects could include fitting bathroom panels, fitting and fixing flooring and roofing, drawing and scaling plans for a cabinet, or fitting window frames and joists. Computing - Digital Technology A qualification in digital technology opens the opportunity for you to work in a variety of sectors, for businesses of all sizes. Whether you are passionate about developing your technical skills, helping companies to protect and analyse their data, or if you are looking for the opportunity to be more creative, there are plenty of routes you can take. Early Years Each year, we train students to become teachers, youth social workers, and early years practitioners. Our priority is to give you plenty of practical experience and training, so that you can feel confident taking your first steps towards working with children or looking after a classroom. Our classes are taught in a fun, practical, and creative workshop-style format, giving you plenty of opportunities to practice your new skills, and learn from one another. In addition to our level 1 and 2 courses, we also offer the Education & Childcare T Level where you can focus on child development, child psychology, working with families, and supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities. Electrical Installation As an electrical installation student, you will work with specialist tutors to develop the practical skills, diagnostic abilities, and commercial awareness required to work as an electrician. Our courses offer hands-on learning, with practical skills so you can get ‘stuck’ into your work with the support and guidance of your tutors when you need it. You will learn the principles of electrical science, fundamental electrical design, and installation practices and procedures. You will learn how to create, install and test, following the safety guidelines needed for electrical systems, as well as electrical system fault diagnosis and rectification. In both the classroom and workshop, you will develop your ability to plan and oversee your work effectively, covering essential health & safety and ensuring you follow the right procedures.
What's next? As a qualified Electrician you could earn up to £42,000 and work in a variety of environments, finding the one which is most suited for you. You could set up your own business, get into project management; or work on a construction site, at your client's business, or their home.

Equine Abingdon & Witney College is the only college in the UK to have an established working thoroughbred stud that offers equine training linked to employment. We offer courses starting from Level 1 up to undergraduate honours degrees, and have students travel from all over the county to join us at Common Leys Farm. During your course, you can get involved with the foaling of our thoroughbred horses, learn how to ride a range of different horses, and have lessons on groundwork skills, schooling, riding over pools, jumping, and road work. Outside of the College farm, you will also have the opportunity to visit local equine and stud yards, and take part in trips to other colleges and universities.
IN THE NEWS Each year our equine students have the opportunity to attend a foal sale. Last year, students Paris and Catherine went on a threeday trip to Newmarket for the Tattersalls December foal sale. The College bred and sold three thoroughbreds, alongside a foal they consigned from another owner. The four sold for a total of 27,000 Guineas. Level

Fast Forward As a Fast Forward student you have access to your own area of the College alongside mentors, learning support assistants and tutors who can help you every step of the way. Your course will enable you to focus on essential key skills such as English, maths, personal organisation, and communication. Alongside supportive careers education, you will also have the opportunity to try out different vocational courses before you make decisions about your next steps. Games Development Through our games development programme, you will have the opportunity to work with both 2D and 3D parameters to design, create, and produce visual elements for a variety of different platforms. Our courses will give you an introduction to the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary to explore, enhance, and sustain your creative development. As you progress through your course, our lecturers will help you to explore and find your own voice; encouraging you to develop a unique perspective and style that you can take to the industry. At College, you will have access to industry-standard resources, including professional HD cameras, recording studios, and the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite. A life changing support network. Our award-winning Gateway team supports young people who have been out of formal education to take steps onto a vocational education programme.

Gateway The support built into the Gateway programmes is really what makes the difference and changes young peoples’ lives. You will be taught by experienced tutors who take time to listen and understand you, whilst supporting you to achieve your goals. You will receive a personally designed programme that will enable you to adjust to College at a pace you feel comfortable with. We support 16-18 years olds to overcome their barriers to learning, gain confidence and to take steps towards a vocational programme if they have missed a significant amount of education. We also support 14-16 year olds who are currently Electively Home Educated on a part-time programme focused on developing English and maths skills, whilst preparing them for a vocational course. In addition, we also operate a part-time schools link programme for those who could benefit from accessing College early.

Progressing from a Gateway programme can lead to getting a part- or full-time job, joining another course at College, starting supported training in the workplace, or even starting an apprenticeship!

Media Our media courses offer hands-on training in video production, copywriting, graphic design, and podcast production using top-tier broadcasting equipment. You will experiment and gain experience using high-tech software and technology, including HD cameras, Adobe Creative Suite Production Premium Software, green screens, augmented reality, and purpose-built editing computers. As you work towards your final major project, you will collaborate with art students, music technology students, and performing art students to tackle client briefs and improve your techniques before showcasing. Upon completion of your course, you will have curated an extensive portfolio of professional work ready to take forward with you for your next steps, whether that is attending university, or starting employment in the industry.
Learning beyond the classroom In 2023, our media students had the opportunity to join Radio Presenter Alice Hopkins for an hour takeover of BBC Radio Oxford. Later in the term, they worked closely with Thames Valley Police to create videos to be used as part of their ‘Under the Influence’ winter public information campaign.

Motor Vehicle Our two large multi-bay workshops contain 15 bays, a variety of vehicle lifts, and industry standard tools that recreate a real working garage environment. By testing, fixing, and tweaking you will gain a strong practical, technical, and academic understanding of vehicle components and operations. Our industry expert tutors will help you diagnose and repair a wide range of light vehicles in our state-of-the-art facilities, gaining skills valued by employers. As you progress beyond the core automotive and technical skills, you will develop your knowledge and skills when working on chassis and suspension systems, vehicle electrical components and health and safety. Our motor vehicle programme includes trips to major employers that give you industry insights, such as visiting Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey. We also have direct links with many of the local garages and motor vehicle businesses.

Music Technology At our Witney campus we have dedicated soundproofed studios and music technology suites where you can record and produce music without worrying about any noise complaints! Our courses will introduce you to creating and manipulating music with technology. You will develop practical skills, with access to a wide range of instruments and our studio recording equipment in our recording studios and you will learn how to use the latest software and hardware, editing your creations in our Mac suite, using software such as Logic. At College, our passionate tutors will help you work towards a role in the industry of your choosing. Former students include the composer Jasper Dent whose credits include working with: Sky, Now TV, Cadburys, Disney, Sony, Universal, BBC, NBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, One 6th, Kino. He’s now based in London.
End the year with a bang At the end of each year, our music students come together for a live music event, showcasing their final major projects. Last year’s event was held at Fat Lil’s in Witney, where students performed a mix of genres as solo artists, as duets, and in bands. Pathways We believe that college is a fantastic first step into life after school for young people with an Education Health & Care Plan (EHCP) who have been attending a special school or a supported education provider. On a Pathways programme, there is support at every point of your journey, with a transition team here to make that change from school as smooth as possible. Our experienced tutors will develop a programme based around of one of our core aims of enabling communication, developing independence or being ready for work, depending on what is appropriate for you. They will make sure it challenges you, but is not overwhelming. A range of therapies, such as speech & language, or physiotherapy, will be embedded into your programme. There are plenty of interesting projects to keep you busy, developing your life, work, and social skills. We have had students create art pieces for an exhibition, set up social profiles through our bespoke social media app WikiMe, and design flower displays for VIP musicians at the Cornbury Festival.
IN THE NEWS Our Pathways students have made it to the Lord Taverner’s Table Cricket finals at Lord’s Cricket Ground for the last 2 years – that winning trophy has just remained out of our grasp, but we remain determined to win it one day!
Your future life
Pathways students progress to a range of destinations – for some it’s a more independent adult life with support from other services, for others it is into work via a Supported Internship or starting a full-time vocational course in one of our college faculties.

Performing Arts Our performing arts courses at Abingdon cover the essential skills you need to succeed in the fast-paced and practical industry. On our Level 2 course, you can explore a variety of performance styles, finding what is right for you and building your confidence, before choosing to specialise in either acting, dance, or musical theatre at Level 3. At the end of each year, you will have the opportunity to showcase all you have learnt in your final major project. Previous performances have included Legally Blonde, Grease, Chicago, Fame, 9-5, and many more. When you are not busy rehearsing and performing, you can enjoy taking part in our masterclasses with guest performers and visiting institutions, and get involved in excursions such as our annual ‘industry week’.
New venues 4 announced for 23/2 This year’s Christmas and Summer final major project performances will be at the Cornerstone Arts Centre in Didcot, with the February showcase at the Old Fire Station arts venue in Oxford city centre. A fantastic opportunity for our students to get experience on the big stage in professional theatres.

Plumbing As a plumbing student you will work with specialist tutors to develop your technical skills and understanding of plumbing. Our courses offer hands-on learning with practical placements where you can apply your news skills in a practical workshop environment, with the support and guidance of your tutors when you need it. Through project-based learning, you will learn how to master preparation tasks, including reading and understanding plans, measuring, bending, and joining of pipes; and how to carry out installation, and to complete testing tasks. You will learn key electrical principles and processes for building service engineering, common plumbing processes, and scientific principles for domestic, industrial, and commercial plumbing. As you progress, you will gain knowledge of cold-water systems, domestic hot-water systems, and common sanitation installations. In our new Renewable Technology Suite, you will also be taught about renewable technology at the forefront of the industry.

Public Services From working in the armed forces, to taking on a fast-paced role in the ambulance service, the public service sector offers plenty of opportunities for you to have a big impact on your local community and beyond.
Learning beyond the classroom
On a public service course, no two days will be the same. You will develop a greater understanding of the public service sector, the effects of crime on society, and your knowledge of other global and contemporary issues.
Every year, our public service students have the opportunity to get involved in bootcamps and external programmes run by the Forces.
Our courses are designed to challenge you and to help you build the essential employability skills you need to succeed. You will develop teamwork, resilience, confidence, and communication, all whilst building on your physical fitness. Our courses can prepare you for a career in the Army, Navy, NHS, and Police Force. To help you pick which sector is best for you, we organise a variety of expeditions, training days and guest speakers, including our alumni now in the forces.
In March 2023, students attended an Army Challenge Day where they took part in a number of challenges designed to develop their teamwork and leadership. The day included paint ball lanes, destroying enemy positions and fitness standard vehicle recovery. Level

Sport From studying nutrition and sport psychology, to creating personal training plans for clients; our sports courses open up a wide range of paths in the sports industry. Through our courses, you can prepare to be a fitness Instructor, personal trainer, PE teacher, youth coach or sports psychologist. You will learn through a combination of theory sessions and practical lessons; studying human anatomy and fitness training, the evolution of the sports industry, and initiatives to develop and promote sports. When you are not in the classroom, you will be training hard to improve your physical skills and abilities in our campus sports hall and gym. You will also take part in bootcamps, workshops with universities, and running courses with local schools, where you can develop your leadership abilities, confidence, and problem-solving skills.

Oxford United Advanced Football Programme Oxford United Advanced Football Programme is a new course that allows you to study full time for a sports qualification whilst training with Oxford United. The course provides you with the opportunity to develop your professional skills, knowledge, and behaviours whilst studying an industry recognised sports qualification and developing your footballing proficiency. You will train and compete in a competitive league and cup tournament against other teams in the region whilst representing Abingdon & Witney College and Oxford United. When you are not training at the club, our specialist team will be there to help you prepare for your future career. This new programme includes a sports based vocational qualification, GCSE English and/or maths as required, a supportive tutorial programme, work experience, and enrichment activities.
Day in the life On a typical day, you may spend the morning studying at our Abingdon Campus before heading off to train with Oxford United UEFA B qualified coaches at Oxford United’s Bangkok Glass Training Ground; part of the £4.9m sports complex near Horspath. All successful applicants will receive an Oxford United season ticket, so when you are not working hard or training, you can spend the evening watching the game with your new course mates!
