Walking Group Update leaders share their favorite scenic walks

The AWA’s walking group, Walking With Women, started a trend last year with new walks that feature “Postcards of Singapore.” We’ve had lots of fabulous members leading our weekly walks, which are Mondays from 8:30-10:30 am and Wednesdays from 9-10 am, which we hope to resume soon. What makes this walk special is that so many different faiths are represented, including Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Muslim and Jewish. “This walk captures the essence of Singapore’s amazing religious diversity in a surprisingly compact area. It’s really Singapore in a nutshell,” she says. Helena Antolin Cochrane, from Philadelphia, heralds Jurong Lake Gardens for its open space and water views. This walk includes grassy fields, beautiful palm trees, a community garden, birdwatching spots, and a superb, five-kilometer loop inside the gardens. “The feeling of openness and fresh air is unrivaled in Singapore,” she says. Meg Sine is from Pocono Pines, PA, but has lived in Asia for 25 years! One of her favorite neighborhood walks is a jaunt around Chinatown. Meg likes this walk “because it shows the proximity of those fun bar and restaurant streets in the shophouse districts, including Keong Saik, Duxton Hill, Ann Siang and Club Street and Telok Ayer.”
