Stolen Jewellery Recovered Police in Huddersfield are appealing for the owner of some suspected stolen jewellery to contact them. On the 6 October a 34-year old man was arrested from Cheque and Pawn on John William Street in the centre of Huddersfield after the owner of Cash Converters had earlier contacted police following concerns that the 34-year old had tried to sell three gold rings and a gold bracelet to him.

Batley Assault

The Alternative Boundary

Liberals and Labour back Conservatives Proposal By Ismail Mulla

The Conservatives may not have been keen on the Alternative Vote during the referendum in May. But they have offered alternative proposals to those of the Boundary Commission. The proposals were supported by both the Kirklees Liberal Democrats and Labour groups in a joint all party motion submitted to Kirklees Council on 19th October. Kirklees Conservative Leader, Coun Robert Light said “We have already acknowledged the unenviable task before the Boundary Commission in terms of this review. But we have flagged up concerns at some of the proposals.”

would see Batley East and West remain in the same constituency in a new Batley and Morley constituency which would also take in three neighbouring wards from Leeds City Council. All three Dewsbury wards would remain in one constituency which would also include Kirkburton and Mirfield as well as the neighbouring Wakefield Rural ward.

The nationwide proposals have caused a lot of controversy especially in West Yorkshire. At a question and answer event of Batley councillors at the Al Hikmah centre earlier this month, boundary changes were the hot topic, with many residents of Batley condemning the Boundary Commissions proposal to split and do away with the Batley constituency.

Under the Boundary Commissions current proposals, Dewsbury West ward would be split into a newly created Mirfield constituency which would also encompass Heckmondwike, Liversedge and Gomersal. Dewsbury East and South would come under a newly created constituency of Dewsbury and Wakefield. Coun Light went onto add, “Splitting Batley and Dewsbury into different constituencies removed their identities, as did splitting the four Spen Valley wards.

The alternative proposals put forward

I am delighted that the Kirklees

Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative Leaders have signed a joint motion to Council which endorses the Conservative Party regional proposals. I sincerely hope that all Party backing for Conservative Party proposals will have the desired impact on the Commission which will result in a fairer and more logical result for local residents.” Currently the Boundary Commission is holding consultation until 5th December with revised published towards the back end of 2012. The independent body will then make recommendations to the government by October 2013.

Miliband Q&A with Leeds Students POLICE NONEMERGENCY NUMBER CHANGE

By Ismail Mulla A question and answers session took place with former Foreign Secretary David Miliband at Leeds Metropolitan University’s Rose Bowl on 20th October. The event was chaired by Professor Paul Blackledge of Leeds Metropolitan University and Dr Jason Ralph of Leeds University. Among the questions that he fielded included foreign policy, a referendum on the EU and Palestine’s bid for statehood.

Following the controversy of Dr Liam Fox and the issues it raised around lobbying the MP for South Shields, Miliband said he supported a registry of interests for lobbyist. He also felt a referendum on the EU wasn’t a priority for the UK and wouldn’t support a motion for it. The event was so well attended that certain observers had to stand in the theatre. After the Q&A with the students of Leeds Metropolitan University and Leeds University, Miliband addressed an audience of Labour Students at the Leeds Met Students Union.

The number for contacting West Yorkshire Police for non-emergencies is to change from November 17th. 101 is the number people should dial in cases of non-emergencies. It will replace the current 08456 06 06 06. Police urge people to use the nonemergency line to report less urgent crime or disorder. For example, reporting a stolen car, damage to property, drug dealing, a minor traffic accident or for general police enquiries. Calls will cost a flat rate of 15p, regardless of how long the call lasts and includes calls made from mobile phones. 101 will be available 24/7, 365 days a year and calls will be answered in the West Yorkshire Police control room. Callers to the old 0845 number will be told to about the new 101

Did you see this Mini? Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was robbed at Carlinghow Hill near to the junction with Hollybank Avenue in Batley on Tuesday 11th October The incident happened at around 8.56am when two male suspects, believed to be teenagers, knocked the 39 year old woman to the ground in the middle of the road and snatched her watch from her wrist. It's reported that the suspects had their hoods pulled up and one had a scarf or scarves covering his face during the incident. The suspects then made off on foot towards Timothy Lane, where it is then believed they then got into a black Mini with a Union Jack on the roof. Officers are eager to speak to anyone who may have seen the incident take place, or may have seen the Mini (Reg MK07 TYW pictured on CCTV) in the area at the time. The Mini has since been recovered by Police. PC Andy Clayton of Huddersfield CID said, "The area where the incident took place will have been busy with people taking their children to school at that time in the morning. Did you see two people acting suspiciously in the area around that time? Or did you see the Mini parked up in the area? If so, we would ask anyone with information to come forward and contact Huddersfield CID on 0845 60 60 606 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

number and asked to use that in the future. Those that are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired can use textphone on 18001 101 West Yorkshire Police reiterated “101 will not replace 999 but is there for crimes or incidents that are not urgent and that do not need an officer to attend immediately. 999 is for real emergencies, where there is a danger to life, or a crime is in progress. In these cases we will send an officer immediately. If you are vulnerable or upset we will prioritise your call.”

Thornhill Lees Road Safety

by Ismail Mulla

Volunteer Group Hold Cancer Seminar

Police and fire services brought a driving simulator to the Library information and Sure Start centre on Brewery Lane Thornhill Lees in an attempt to educate people – young and old – about safer driving. The event was part of Road Safety week 2011. The simulator - a replica Mini Cooper convertible - gave the locals a chance to experience a variety of situations faced by ordinary road users. From the organisers Georgina Robinson told us ‘The parents have really enjoyed it this afternoon being in that car and just seeing how they can drive that little bit more safely, we’ve put some of the children in there just to distract them as well, to see how when you distract mum and dad in the car they don’t drive quite as well.’

‘It can also simulate drink driving’ added Caroline Foster, the Prevention and Road Safety Officer of the Fire Service, who are dealing with more road traffic incidents than they are fire incidents. PCSO’s Heather Chester and Julie Buxton said ‘Education around road safety is enormously important, not just to children but also to adults. A lapse of concentration whilst crossing a road or whilst behind the wheel of a vehicle can easily lead to tragedy.’ ‘That is why we are holding educational talks, stories and quizzes to children to raise awareness of the importance of road safety. We will also have the use of a driving simulator that we will use alongside officers from the fire service to help raise awareness amongst adults as well.’

Over 150 people from Dewsbury attended a seminar held on Cancer Awareness organised by voluntary organisation ‘Kumon y’all’ based in Savile Town Dewsbury.

were also given leaflets and key cards (supplied by the NHS) with simple information and instructions on what to look out for and what to do if you suffer from any of the common symptoms

The event was held on Sunday 16th October at a local mosque in Dewsbury and was an open to everyone event.

Kumon y’all went on to say: ‘The health awareness programme that we recently started is aimed at bringing more information on the main illnesses that are currently affecting the people, especially in our town. Our aim is to provide a basic education on the common illnesses, there causes and how to deal with the illness.’ And added: ‘Attendances have been increasing, people are finding these events informative and very useful. Our aim is to reach out to everyone by incresing participation at every event.’

Organisers ‘Kumon y’all’, told us ‘As part of the health awareness programme it was only appropriate that in this month of Cancer Awareness we brought to light the issues relating to this illness.’ The presentation was delivered by Dr Chandra, along with local paramedic Amjad Hussain and also Steven Nicholson from Social Change. A power point presentation helped explain all the different aspect to cancer and talked about how to look out for the symptoms and what to do. Also highlighted were the key facts and the common cancers that people suffer from. People attending

With the growing success Kumon y’all told Awaaz they hope to plan more seminars for the community on issues important to local people.

Diwali par Hamari Shubkaamnaye Diwali or Deepavali also known as the festival of light is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists all over the world. The festival falls on the night of the new moon between mid-October and midNovember. This year Diwali started on October 26th. It is celebrated over five days and involves activities such as Rangoli patterns on doorways and around the house. Lighting candles around the home as a sign of self illumination. “Light that shows you the correct path in life,” said Community Leader and CEO of United Religions Initiative UK, Kiran Bali. In the evening it’s about coming together and giving of gifts. Playing music, singing and dancing “things you would associate with festivals” adds Kiran Bali.

PM’s Diwali Message I want to send my very best wishes to all our communities here in the United Kingdom and around the world celebrating the festival of Diwali. Diwali, with all its references to friendship, family and fellowship, is something that we can all embrace and celebrate. It gives me enormous pleasure to be able to again host Downing Street's celebration of Diwali in October.

and Jains, we should also recognise and celebrate the immense contribution the British Hindu and the British Indian community make to our country. In every single sphere you have excelled, bringing our cultures and communities much closer together. So may this New Year bring you great success in your endeavours.

To mark the festival Prime Minister David Cameron talked about some interesting facts relating to the Hindu community. He said “our free schools, a great policy to allow people to establish new schools. One of the first has been the Krishna Avanti primary school in Leicester, a huge success and a big celebration for them. Now, here’s a fact I didn’t know: Britain’s biggest-ever work of public art, of course, is the Olympic Park sculpture, designed, of course, by Anish Kapoor, one of our most successful artists, and funded by Lakshmi Mittal, one of our most successful business leaders So, another Hindu first for Britain.” Fireworks are also a prevalent part of the festivities. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said “We would like to join the Sikh community in West Yorkshire in celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Light on the 26 October 2011. Many Sikh families will attend their local Gurdwara to pray and watch an organised fireworks display and/or get together with family members and light candles at home. Please ensure safe practices are in place to keep you safe from fire related incidents.” Awaaz would like to wish all our readers a happy and safe Diwali.

I wish you and your family a happy Diwali.

Bradford Gun Smugglers Jailed for 100 years EIGHT people have been jailed for their part in the smuggling of illegal firearms into the UK from America. Over a 12-month period, the gang was involved in smuggling a total of 13 firearms into the country, concealing them within 27 packages containing electrical equipment including DVD players and portable radios. Following hearings at Bradford Crown Court, Mohammed Tariq (33) and Atique Arif were sentenced to 24 years each, whilst Mudasser Iqbal (29), received 12 years, Feroz Khan (24) was jailed for 10 years Sakawat Shah (29) and Mohsin Hussain (29) from Bradford were both sentenced to 8 years. All were from Bradford. The investigation, led by West Yorkshire Police supported by the National Ballistics Intelligence Service and the Serious Organised Crime Agency, commenced in July 2010 when two parcels, destined for two addresses in Bradford, had been intercepted by the UK Border Agency at East Midlands Airport. Enquiries revealed that Tariq and Arif had been the main co-ordinators of the conspiracy which began when

Tariq ordered a Taser gun from an American website. The pair then purchased guns from the seller in Texas, who would break down the gun parts and conceal them within the consignments destined for addresses across Bradford. Tariq and Arif would then instruct Iqbal to collect the parcels.

Guns were posted in pieces Tariq, Arif and Iqbal were all arrested several days later at Manchester Airport as they disembarked a flight from Morocco. Officers liaised with the US’ Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who arrested the seller and two women in Texas for their involvement in the importation. Detective Inspector Gary Curnow of

Councillors Grilled by Public

By Ismael Mulla

“Actually coming to a live debate it enthuses and invigorates a lot of people.” - Local Resident Mark Griffin An OPEN public meeting with local councillors for Batley was held at the Al-Hikmah Centre. The meeting took place on Monday 10th October. Despite the bad weather, the meeting had a decent turnout with local residents having a variety of questions for the councillors. The panel included Amanda Stubley and Hanif Mayet (both Labour) representing Batley East with Gwen Lowe, Peter O’Neil and Shabir Pandor representing Batley West alongside. Upon delivering his opening statement Coun Pandor said “I really came here not to do a speech about me but to hear your concerns.” One of those concerns was regarding bin collections and whether or not the council would be looking at

possibly increase bin collections from fortnightly to weekly. The answer from the panel was that it was not financially feasible to revert back to weekly collections. But one of the main talking points of the evening was a parliamentary issue, regarding the boundary changes which would see Batley disappear as a constituency. The panel was unanimous in condemning the proposal and the general mood amongst residents was of dismay. Many felt that they would no longer be represented by a proper voice in Westminster. The councillors urged people to go to the consultation and to start petitioning against the changes to Batley. Care for the elderly was another topic

discussed at the meeting, with one resident urging “through MPs through yourselves we want some representation that our elderly people are looked after; they’ve paid their taxes, now we need to look after them.” Other issues covered included the raising of speed limits in Howden Clough, parking in the town centre, investment in local sports facilities for young people to use and the recent spate of burglaries that have blighted areas of Batley. But it came as no surprise with winter approaching fast that gritting was a big discussion point. Several residents voiced their concerns following successive harsh winters. Coun Mayet said of the event,“It went

really well people expressed their concerns, their views and the councillors who were able to answer to the best of their ability. People seemed to be satisfied with the answers that they had been given.” Local resident Mark Griffin went onto add “I think first of all Batley is an absolute fabulous place, folk from lots of different backgrounds and to be able to come along to the Indian Muslim Welfare Society and have a really good, robust discussion, I think the key thing is listening to other peoples point of view. Actually coming to a live debate it enthuses and invigorates a lot of people.” The meeting was chaired by Aziz Daji of the IMWS who hosted the event.

Lord Mayor Completes City Park Milestone Coun Ikram said: “City Park should become a great asset for Bradford and it was wonderful to be able to play even a small part in its construction.

The final granite setts in City Park’s mirror pool have been officially laid by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Coun Naveeda Ikram. It is the last of more than 277,000 setts within the pool, which will be a central part of the six-acre park being created by Bradford Council. The Lord Mayor donned a hard hat, hi-vis vest and Mayoral chains to carry out the milestone.

Flash Back to the 80’s David Arnison recalls: “Some of the photographs on display here were taken more than a quarter of a century ago. In those days I had a temporary darkroom which I used to set up in my bathroom. I would occasionally wander down through the Batley and Dewsbury area from my home in Morley, looking to capture the urban landscapes and the diverse and friendly characters to be found therein. This was before deregulation and for a small sum, one could travel for miles within West Yorkshire, using the public transport system. Following the success of last year’s Festival of Light, Huddersfield is set to come alive again with three colourful nights of light inspired entertainment from December 2 to 4. Over 25,000 people - an increase of 25% on 2010 - braved the bad weather to attend last year’s festival. The increased visitor numbers brought in an estimated half a million pounds of additional income to town centre businesses over the weekend. Cllr Mehboob Khan, Leader of Kirklees Council, said: ‘Festival of Light has been growing each year. Last year was the first year we extended it to a full programme of entertainment in addition to the main show. The festival really does put Huddersfield on the map - it not only draws audiences from the local area but from outside Kirklees and beyond Yorkshire too. I’m very proud that we have such a unique event in Huddersfield and that it is free for

all to enjoy. ‘ Visitors this year can expect another magnificent weekend. As dusk falls across the town, there will be a variety of performances and attractions to delight and amaze, both indoors and out. And of course it wouldn’t be Festival of Light without Sunday’s grand firework finale in St George’s Square to bring celebrations to an impressive close.

Today in pakistan, i heard a story of a man who had no money so stood outside parliament and set himself on fire, on this day his wife also gave birth to their baby boy. a minister gave his wife £5000 and a job. Another elderly man also died after waiting in the sun to collect his pension. a minister put chairs and shade outside for the others. why do we live in a world where we fix problems after witnessing calamities?

Queen Honours Local Head with OBE A By Ismail Mulla

collage of drawings and messages celebrating the success of an extraordinary woman sits on the table. One message reads ‘Behind every success is effort, behind every effort is passion, behind every passion is someone with courage to try, you did it be proud congratulations Mrs Laher.’ Hawa Bibi Laher, head teacher of Spring Grove J I &N School, Huddersfield was awarded an OBE for her contribution to teaching. “I received the letter from the prime minister it was four weeks before the Queen’s birthday, saying that he was going to recommend me to the Queen for an OBE, on the Birthday honours list. I read it and said I think this is a joke. It was quite a surprise,” she laughs. Despite this news Mrs Laher was unable to share her joy with anyone other than her really close family as nominees are not allowed to let anyone know until the official announcement is made. “I was really good I didn’t tell anyone other than my close family”

Family Fortune : Mrs Hawa Bibi Laher OBE celebrates with family

To collect her OBE Mrs Laher went in her traditional garment complete with Hijab. “Walking to Buckingham Palace is just fantastic. We got there and from the word go, from the moment you get there everyone treats you like royalty in a way. Even the police, even though they are checking your identity, they’re courteous they’re congratulating you. It was such a fantastic experience, we were told it could be any member of the royal family (who could present the awards) it didn’t have to be the Queen, I was really glad it was the Queen.” On her actual encounter, the Queen took a particular interest in Mrs Laher’s South African background, “I said I’m from South Africa and at this stage she came close and said “you’re from South Africa?” and I said yes and that’s why for me this is so special.” The following day Mrs Laher was given a royal welcome back at Spring Grove J I & N by all the pupils and staff, as she was greeted with a special assembly complete with a rendition of ‘God Save The Queen’ and union jacks being flown by pupils. It has been a long and extraordinary journey for Mrs Laher. Born in South Africa, she lived through the apartheid years where she faced hardship. She attended university in South Africa but didn’t fulfil her dream of complet-

ing university. “I really wanted a university degree; I would’ve felt unfulfilled if I didn’t.” To fulfil her ambition she moved to the UK. On her first impressions of Britain Mrs Laher said “It was such a surprise I’ll give you an example, I used to travel by bus from Batley to Bradford and in South Africa we were not allowed to sit on a white bus, so when I climbed onto a bus and sat next to a white person it was just weird seeing white people and talking to them as ordinary people. Having previously lived under the apartheid system has spurred her on to get the best out of all children, “For me every child has to succeed no matter what colour creed they are. I make sure that all children in my school achieve highly.”

Later on family commitments led her to change her career from working as a scientist to teaching. “I thought about teaching, I spent just to make sure that I really wanted to be a teacher I went to a school in Birmingham and spent a morning there and I was just smitten. I was amazed with what was hap-

pening in the classroom, very different from my education. Here the kids were playing yet they were learning. That’s when I decided teaching was for me, so I went to do my PGCE.” She went onto become the first female Muslim head teacher in Kirklees, helping turn Spring Grove J I & N around, in turn becoming a prominent voice in the teaching community addressing various ethnic teaching fringe events and the NUT. She was also named on the ‘Most powerful Muslim women in Britain’ list by the Equality and Human Rights Commission in 2009. As the interview concluded Mrs Laher was keen to point out that the OBE was not just about her. “Could you put in there that it was a community achievement, everybody had a part in it.”

A Royal welcome of her own from teachers, pupils and parents

claim unsurpassable. Moving further than the level you yourself might have said you couldn’t get past in a million years. It’s strange why we limit ourselves, why we put a stop on how far a person can go, how much they can achieve. I guess in that sense our biggest limit (although not as big as life) is us.

Limits by Limited Limit. The definition is a point or level beyond which something may not pass. Many things have limits, life being a big one. But putting that aside, are we truly limited in what we can do? Is there a point beyond which we can’t pass? Henry Ford (the man who founded Ford) once said, “As we advance in life we learn our limits”. He probably meant that a person can only go so far in the things they do; they can only run to a certain speed, or they can only type so fast,

or only make a certain amount of money. That once you get to a certain point, you just know that’s you’re limit, you’re never going to get any further. However, Usain Bolt broke the world record twice and every year there’s a new contender for the world’s fastest texter, not to mention Apple’s astonishing record of making the big bucks. They had more money to spend than the US government this year. So should we really look at the things that stop us as limits, if we can break them?

can’t go beyond? When we’re told that we have to do an essay 500 words long, at first it’s one of the hardest things in the world, trying to think of things to write, topics to cover, but once we get into the rhythm of it, we’re on 600 words before we know it. Isn’t that similar with other things we do every day?

Wouldn’t they then be regarded as challenges? Things that we should work towards and beat every time, like obstacles, rather than a point we

The Teens Age Limits For Kids On Violent Video Games

By Rabab Hussain

Having the latest console and video games have become a trend in each household today which makes age limits on games even more important to protect children from the violence portrayed in them. Studies at Middlesex University also found that children become more aggressive the longer they played violent computer games. Children as young as four often play games which, if the images were in a film or video, would be against the law. On the other hand scientists have discovered that limited playing of computer games can increase IQ levels because it demands a degree of concentration and hand-eye co-ordination. It also helps kids with problem solving and fast analysis of situations. Games which are sold in the EU carry classifications, those with no violent content or sex are rated 3+, signifying

info@awaaznews.com

the age from which they can be played. There are also classifications of 7+, 12+, 16+ and 18+. One argument is that violent video games can increase children's aggression, as they don’t teach children moral consequences. For example if you shoot somebody in certain computer games, you don't go to jail, you don't get punished in anyway but instead you get extra points! This doesn't mean that a child will go out into the world and shoot someone, but they maybe more likely to use more aggressive language, they may also have less ability to control their anger and may express themselves in violent ways. But with an age limit on the game itself it becomes difficult for the child to purchase the game, who would feel the need to ask a parent or guardian to purchase it for them.

Just remember renowned American business woman Mary Kay Ash, “Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve.” For advice or help - send us your problems on teens@awaaznews.com Identity 100% confidential!

Has Apple Reached Its Limit? Rest In Peace Steve Jobs Likely not. After the new 4S you wouldn’t be called a traitor if you though apple was beginning to lose it, watching helplessly as Samsung, HTC and Google, trump the iOS and hardware. The truth is that Apple probably have a lot more in store than their shops might say. The new iPhone 4S has a little feature called Siri that pretty much answers every question you have. Is it raining today? Siri will tell you if you need a raincoat. Just ask. ‘Your wish is its command’ the Apple website claims. Considering it can reschedule meetings, place phone calls and send messages, your wish is definitely its command.

changes, the new iPhone works a lot faster than the old one. Once you handle the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 4 feels like something from the back end of last century. Many people at first complained about how Apple hadn’t kept up with the times and were falling behind, so why did these same people queue up for hours outside stores to get their hands on the brand new iPhone? Simple. Steve Jobs (RIP) came up with the idea to combine games,

This new iPhone is more to bring older iPhone users up to speed. It has the same pristine look, with buttons on the screen that “look so good you’ll want to lick them” as Steve Jobs truthfully said. Apart from some small

Fun Stuff Fun fact: When two full moons occur in a single month, the second is called a Blue Moon Random: A magician was boasting about how long he could hold his breath under water. His record was 6 minutes. A young boy told the magician he could hold his breath under water for over 10 minutes without any equipment or training. The magician promised the boy £10, 000 if he managed it. The boy walked away with the money after ten minutes. How did he do it? Tongue Twister: I saw Susie sitting in a shoe shine shop. Where she sits she shines, and where she shines she sits. Mind Bender: There are 1200 elephants in a herd. Some have pink and green stripes (!?), some are all pink and some are all blue. One third are pure pink. Is it true that 400 elephants are definitely blue? Answer = are we limited?

communication, the Internet and style together; leading the revolution for what would be the smartphone. Apple created the bar and broke through it with every new innovation they brought to the world of technology, setting it higher and higher. It’s taken every other company nearly a decade to get to where Apple was. A company that stays at the top for so long and works harder than anyone else to bring quality to all of their customers, don’t let other companies get past them so easily.

It’s easy to see people trust Apple with the products they produce, they know every new product will be better than the last. That they don’t make something identical to anyone else or even themselves. Apple is on a reign that’s going to take more than a bad review to shake. They’re going to have more lessons to teach on the way.

Revamp Your Make-up Bag! By Rabab Hussain It's the perfect time to clear out your summer cosmetics and embrace the gorgeous new range of winter make-up.

makeup sitting in our make-up bags? We’re all guilty of it, I’m sure, but you need to be careful about keeping your make-up, up to date because bacteria can build upon your products causing make-up to do funny things!

pleasant, then it’s worth investing in some new make-up. Here are my top tips to ensure you have the best make-up bag!!

How many of us have old and out of date Heavy Eyebrows

So to avoid looking like you got ready in the dark, and to make sure your make-up is Keeping it Natural

Following on from last winter’s strong trend for heavy brows, this autumn/winter is all about NOT plucking and keeping your brows thicker and heavier. That doesn’t mean let them go wild, though make sure they have a defined shape or you’ll end up looking more like Bigfoot than a beauty queen! Keep brows from straying out of line with a lick of clear mascara.

Nude makeup has been a huge hit this year, with flawless complexions being seen on catwalks all over the world, the effect is simple and elegant. But if you want to add a little more colour, try adding a few licks of a nude nail polish and keep blemishes under wraps with the Benefit powder concealer. If going completely nude is a bit too simple, then liven things up with a hint of pink or brighten up your cheeks with a cream blush.

Bold lips A big trend this year has been bold and bright lips, making an appearance down the catwalk for designer labels like Ralph Lauren so why not add a pop of purple or red to stand out in the crowd. The best way to achieve a flawless bold lip: • Use a lip liner to outline you lips or create the shape you want, fill in the lips with the liner • Apply the colour with a lip brush to be careful not to go out of the line you have created • Add gloss for a shiny finish, adding gloss to the centre of the lips will plump them up and make them bigger • Finally take a concealer and outline around the lips, blending into the skin, to make the lip colour pop and give it a defined finish. Gaming Batman Arkham City Review Building on 2009's fabulous Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City brings us North Gotham, an exciting and elaborately detailed prison for the city's most heinous criminals. Playing as Batman himself, your aim is to try and bring justice to chaos. In short, the game has everything that makes a winning formula, atmosphere, intuitive combat, a driving plot and so much more that only becomes clear as you make more discoveries. The plot provides ample reason to keep the player motivativated; Joker is dying and Batman is forced by a series of unfortunate circumstances to try and find a cure. Along the way he comes into contact with the Penguine, Mr. Freeze and other

familiar villains. Each character is terrifically portrayed, and the voice acting is top-notch and not at all distracting. The combat system makes a return from Arkham Asylum with only a few minor tweaks that only improve upon the old system. It retains its simplicity, one button is used for attacking while another is used for countering. The main addition is the use of Batman's gadgets in combat; though you had the option to throw a Batarang to keep your combo chain, here you can actually use a stun baton to involuntarily force an enemy to turn against his comrades, amongst other things. It's an effectively simple way of refreshing what might have otherwise been a stale experience. Experience points are gained through combat, unlocking

Ratchet and Clank All 4 One Review

By Simmi Seghal

Ratchet and Cank: All 4 One brings one big change to the franchise. Those who have followed the franchise since the very beginning might think it's the introduction of co-op play but considering you could play together in Rachet: Deadlocked, that's not the case. The biggest change is the camera, which negatively impacts the game-play as you can no longer directly control where your bullets will fly, turning previously enjoyable shooting segments into the game's biggest weakpoint. It's not all bad though, vehicle sequences are very well-paced and make up somewhat for the dull combat. The option to join your friends either online or off-line also

provides constant laughs. It works seamlessly, with players being able to join in or drop out whenever they want. But again, the camera ruins this too. Because of its limitations, sometimes it is hard to keep track of all the action on the screen and you end up victim to cheap deaths. If you're venturing forth on your adventure alone, an AI tags along to help you solve puzzles. It's usually smart enough to help rather than hinder, but sometimes the sheer idiocy of the AI baffled me. It's not unusual to watch as it walks straight off ledges or stops moving

In the UK the 3G version will cost ÂŁ279.99, and the Wi-Fi-only version will retail for ÂŁ229.99.

The PlayStation Vita finally has a release date. Sony has confirmed that its latest offering to the portable gaming maket will arrive to European shores on February 22nd, just two months after its Japanese debut on December 17th.

While the launch dates and prices for the PS Vita are set, there remain a number of questions regarding the handheld. For one, there has been little word on what games will be available at launch, despite the Japanese line-up being confirmed. Japanese launch titles include Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and Lord of Apocalypse. Additionally, Sony has said the system's US-based 3G service will be provided by AT&T, but hasn't revealed any pricing for the data plans, or whether they would be contractual.

a wide variety of upgrades to your suit, weapons and skills. But it's not all about combat in Arkham City; there are many sections where stealth is required and just as in the last game, it is immensly satisfying to hang upside down from a gargoyle and pounce on an unsuspecting guard. There are also plenty of puzzles to test your intelligence; the Riddler makes a return and proves to be far more challenging than in Arkham Asylum. There is also the option to play as Catwoman, either by buying the game now and receiving a free download code or by purchasing the download online. She has her own set of challenges and missions to complete and controls just as easily as Batman, but with enough differences to make it a unique experience.

Bottom Line: I have only one complaint regarding Batman Arkham City; the boss fights are too easy and are somewhat anti-climatic. Other than that though, Arkham City offers a fascinating world to explore which is filled with secrets. Combining the exploration with a first-rate combat system and making clever use out of the rich variety of Batman characters, this game will please both veteran fans of the Caped Crusader and those who only started watching when Batman Begins was released.

altogether.

well, especially the latter. A constant barrage of obstacles keeps your attention glued to the screen as you zip through the levels at what feels like a break-neck speed.

Though this comedic tale is filled with a lot of funny jokes and moments of pure hilarity, there is a downside in that some of the lines are repeated to the point where you'll be able to mimic it word for word but this is a relatively minor complaint. Another area which has taken a hit are the graphics. Visuals have become dull with blurred textures and choppy character animation. Artistic design remains strong, maintaining the Ratchet world's charm but compared to previous games in the franchise, this is a major let-down. Favourite weapons such as Mr. Zurkon make a reappearance alongside exciting additions such as the Blitzer, which turns your body into a projectile. Thankfully, Ratchet and Clank offers variety in its puzzlesolving segments and vehicle sequences, which are done very

The final element to gameplay are boss fights, though these aren't nearly as enjoyable as the platforming, puzzle and driving challenges. Most of the time, all you have to do is stand back and whittle away at its health. There's no strategy, there's no clever planning involved, and it's all just a little bit dated. Bottom Line: With a variety of fun activities, and with clever puzzles that will test your skills and a co-op mode that never fails to amuse, Ratchet and Clank rises above being a merely average game. But a poor camera and dull shooting sequences cause some frustrations which stop it from being a truly enjoyable experience. Rating 3.5/5
