MIDSOMMARFEST

andersonville.org/events/midsommarfest Residents and visitors alike eagerly anticipate the arrival of Andersonville Midsommarfest, an annual celebration which transforms Clark Street into a haven of music, dance, and community spirit. Inspired by the Swedish Midsommar tradition, the festival takes place the second weekend in June, ushering in the summer season with a diverse array of festivities.

Attendees can expect a dynamic lineup of live musical performances across multiple stages and a curated street fair featuring an eclectic mix of food vendors, artisans, not-for-profits, and local businesses.

The festival has become a hallmark event for the Andersonville community, showcasing the area’s unique charm and fostering a sense of inclusivity and togetherness. Midsommarfest not only highlights the diversity of the LGBTQIA2+ community, but also serves as a platform for fostering connections, breaking down barriers, and celebrating love in all its forms.

Simon’s Tavern has been an anchor of the Clark Street business district since it opened in 1934. Owner Scott Martin, who took over in 1994, has been a lifelong member of the Andersonville community.

When you walk into Simon’s, you are not only walking toward a great drink, but you are walking into history. This former speakeasy is a neighborhood favorite, known for its Chicago and Swedish roots, famous celebrations, community presence, and Glögg (hot or frozen, depending on the season). Chicago was once the home of the second-largest Swedish population in the world, second only to Stockholm! So it’s not surprising that the Swedish American Museum, opened in 1976 by Swedish immigrant Kurt Mathiasson, has been a cornerstone of the Andersonville community for more than 47 years. Its permanent exhibit tells the story of Swedish immigration, which resonates with visitors regardless of their family’s country of origin. Constantly evolving, you can enjoy the courtyard and watch the addition of a permanent cafe and expansion in 2024 into the building next door, which will complement the Museum’s art exhibits, genealogy center, children’s museum, and museum store.

Women & Children First began in a modest storefront in 1979. Since then, they’ve moved twice but have called Andersonville home for nearly 35 years! WCF staffers include teachers, graduate students, actors, storytellers, activists, mothers, board members, and published authors. Each of them is a feminist, a reader, and a bookseller. One of the largest feminist bookstores in the country, WCF stocks more than 25,000 books by and about women, children’s books, and the best LGBTQIA+ literature. They also carry gift items, such as cards, journals, posters, calendars, buttons, and flags. WCF has hosted hundreds of great women authors and feminist icons including Gloria Steinem, Maya Angelou, Roxane Gay, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Ann Patchett, Sandra Cisneros, and Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz.

Co-owner Sarah Hollenbeck’s favorite thing about co-owning the shop is, of course, talking about books! “Communing around a book can propel a conversation in a million exciting directions--personal, political, and more! A book can start or deepen a relationship with a stranger, a loved one, or even one’s self. What else can do that?”
