Early businesses like Lind Hardware Store, Nelson Funeral Home , and Erickson’s Delicatessen helped shape the neighborhood into the thriving commercial district still celebrated today. Landmarks such as the Swedish American Museum , (founded in 1976), and legacy businesses such as Svea Restaurant and Simon’s Tavern , preserve its Swedish roots while embracing the community’s evolving diversity.

In the spirit of commitment to Andersonville’s small business community and being a part of such a unique and supportive neighborhood, the idea formed to create a lasting impression on this year’s guide cover with a water tower tattoo in collaboration with Evoke Tattoos . Brooke Englehart, who owns the Andersonville studio with Marci Mundo, was thrilled to have the opportunity to bring the idea to life! It could not have been a more fitting choice—as a quirky community, we are delighted to see the iconic symbol celebrated in a fun and unconventional way.
Andersonville Midsommarfest is an annual celebration that transforms Clark Street into a haven of music, dance, and community spirit. Inspired by the Swedish Midsommar tradition, the festival takes place the second weekend in June, ushering in the summer season with a diverse array of festivities. Attendees can expect a dynamic lineup of live musical performances across multiple stages and a curated street fair featuring an eclectic mix of food vendors, artisans, not-for-profits, and local businesses.
Now in its 59th year, the festival has become the hallmark event for the Andersonville community by showcasing the area’s unique charm and fostering a sense of inclusivity and togetherness. Midsommarfest not only highlights the diversity of the LGBTQIA2+ community, but also serves as a platform for fostering connections, breaking down barriers, and celebrating love in all its forms.

Chicago was once the home of the second-largest Swedish population in the world, second only to Stockholm! So it’s not surprising that the Swedish American Museum , opened in 1976 by Swedish immigrant Kurt Mathiasson, has been a cornerstone of the Andersonville community for more than 48 years. Its core exhibit tells the story of Swedish immigration, which resonates with visitors regardless of their family’s country of origin. Constantly evolving, there is now a Café with Swedish treats, and soon further expansion into the building next door, which will complement the Museum’s art exhibits, genealogy center, children’s museum, museum store and courtyard.

It’s the 45th anniversary of Women & Children First , which began in a modest storefront on Armitage Avenue. Since then, they’ve moved twice but have called Andersonville home since 1990! WCF staffers include teachers, graduate students, actors, storytellers, activists, mothers, board members, and published authors. Each of them is a feminist, a reader, and a bookseller. One of the largest feminist bookstores in the country, WCF stocks more than 25,000 books by and about women, children’s books, and the best LGBTQIA+ literature. They also carry gift items, such as cards, journals, posters, calendars, buttons, and flags. WCF has hosted hundreds of great women authors and feminist icons including Gloria Steinem, Maya Angelou, Roxane Gay, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Ann Patchett, Sandra Cisneros, and Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz. Co-owner Sarah Hollenbeck’s favorite thing about co-owning the shop is, of course, talking about books! “Communing around a book can propel a conversation in a million exciting directions--personal, political, and more! ANDERSONVILLE SSA #22
SSAs (Special Service Areas) empower local communities to address specific needs, foster economic growth, and create vibrant, thriving districts. The Andersonville SSA #22 is a funding tool used by the Andersonville community to maintain a clean, attractive, and competitive commercial district.
The funding comes from a tax levy on each commercial property within the SSA service area. The SSA is managed by the “sole service provider” chosen by the SSA commission: the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce. Here’s an overview of what SSAs in Chicago do including Andersonville’s SSA #22:
LOCAL IMPROVEMENTS
SSAs fund local improvements and services that go beyond the standard services provided by the city. These can include street cleaning, landscaping, decorative lighting, public art installations, and other enhancements that contribute to the overall appearance and appeal of the area.
COMMUNITY
ENGAGEMENT
SSAs often facilitate programming that bring people together, promote a sense of community, and contribute to the cultural vibrancy of the district.
BUSINESS SUPPORT
SSAs offer financial resources to local businesses within the designated area. This may include grants, facade improvement programs, or business development initiatives to help stimulate economic growth.
MARKETING & PROMOTION
SSAs often allocate funds for marketing and promotional activities to attract visitors, shoppers, and businesses to the area. This can include advertising campaigns, events, and other initiatives aimed at boosting the local economy.
SAFETY & SECURITY
SSAs allocate funds for enhanced safety measures, such as additional security personnel or improved lighting, to create a safer environment for residents, visitors, and businesses.
PUBLIC ART & BEAUTIFICATION
Beautification projects, including public art installations and landscaping, are often funded by SSAs. These efforts contribute to the unique character and visual appeal of the area.
The boundaries of SSA #22 are Clark Street from Ainslie to Victoria and adjoining side streets up to the alleys, plus the south sides of Balmoral and Foster from the west alley to Ashland.

Andersonville SSA #22 is in its 23rd year of providing services to the Andersonville Clark Street commercial district. In our annual survey of consumers, SSA services — especially those related to beautification, cleanliness, and marketing — are consistently rated among the most important services for the businesses’ success. Here are some highlights of the 2024 SSA service year:
For our landscaping, we are very fortunate to have a wonderful service provider Vivant Gardening Services . Native plants are in their third cycle in the corner planters throughout the SSA district.
Cleanslate has been providing sidewalk cleaning and garbage pick-up services to the community for many years now. Thanks to the SSA, they are on the street 6 days per week April through November. In the winter months, look for them on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, sweeping the sidewalks and emptying the waste bins along Clark Street.
We are proud to partner with snow plowing contractor Patch Landscaping to install our Holiday Decorations and plow our sidewalks. The Patch crew plows snow from sidewalks whenever there is a snowfall of 2” or more. Business and property owners are reminded that this service is meant to supplement, not replace, their own efforts to keep the sidewalks clear.
Lucas Contracting did an amazing job repairing and painting all of our trash cans in the district. The SSA was pleased to work with FosterWorks (pictured right) on this year’s new holiday blade signs.
