Sustainable Design Brunswick Stormwater Park

- This project taught me how to deeply analyze a site and its surrounding area in order to produce a sustainable design that fits the community The main goal of my design was to address the current flooding issues with the site I chose and implement green infrastructure to remediate it. I also wanted bring programming into the community and create a flood zone buffer to protect the surrounding neighborhoods.

The noise analysis I drew showed that there was intense noise pollution from the interstate on the left of my site which is why I wanted to create a sound buffer with running water.

This map shows that the site I chose is in a high risk flood zone, which is zone AE 10/11 and has a 1% chance of flooding.

Through an analysis of water flow on my site I found where it naturally pooled and the direction it flowed in order to determine where the deep and shallow pools would be located.

The stormwater diagram I created shows how excess flood water would be managed in the constructed wetlands in my design in order to protect the surrounding residential areas.

Design Inspiration My design inspiration came from stormwater parks built in the U.S. and other countires like China with similar climates and flooding issues. I wanted to make something aesthetically pleasing yet functional.

Perspectives This perspective shows a close up view of the raised platform in the center of the deep pool.

This platform creates space for gathering and gives visitors a destination spot along the boardwalk to rest and enjoy the view.

The second perspective shows a view along the boardwalk to show the lush vegetation that will make up the wetland area and create a habitat for wildlive and native plants.

The final perspective showcases the greenspace area close to the center pool where children can play safely from the road and other visitors can enjoy the open space.

Design Inspiration My design inspiration came from outdoor plazas that utilized shade structures in organic forms. I really liked the idea of adding a tree in the center that would be visible from the upper plaza as well.

The main ideas behind this design were to create an upper and lower level with different feelings. The lower level is sunken and gives respite from the street noise.

The upper level is more open and has a better view point of the surrounding area.

There is a rock wall/ mural on the wall which creates programming and also a sense of arrival as you walk through the walls.

The first perspective I drew was of the entire site and helps to illustrate the two distinct levels in my design.

It shows the height of the yellow wall which helps to seclude the bottom level and allow visitors to enjoy the moment.

The second perspective shows how the walls can be used for seating. It also better illustrates the use of brick in the upper plaza and the patches of turf. There are a few trees throughout the space that help to add to the feeling of being immersed in nature in the city.

Community Design Moss side development

- The takeaways from this project was learning how to grade a large site and how that will affect my design.

The Moss Side Residential Neighborhood encompasses the most efficient use of space for units to be cost effective while also saving as much of the original surrounding natural forest area as possible. Existing trees and the oak forest are priceless in creating a timeless and mature looking community. The way that this balance was achieved is by the incorporation of pocket neighborhoods. The neighborhood encapsulates accessibility, celebration of the natural environment, functionality, and affordability for renters.

During the preliminary design process, soil groups, existing vegetation, water drainage, and slope were all taken into account for the best placements of pocket neighborhoods as well as the amenities location. Retaining as much of the original oak forest as possible while also choosing locations with the best views for building was considered.

Road Works and Grading Plan Making sure that this property layout design would be worth it for inventors and builders was one stipulation. Being able to include the most amount of lots for profit purposes while also including forested areas was all considered in the layout of the site.

Phase One started on Autocad as I configured my design. I layed out the curving pathway and the locations of important features like the disc golf course and gazebo.

Phase Two of the design process was adding color to my design to further imagine how the plantings will look together. This helped to bring the design to life in a rough sketch style.

The YMCA tasked us to create a planting plan that would be both functional year round, not be too much of a maintenance job, but also fit into the specific budget allocation. The plantings chosen compliment just that. The use of native plants mixed with an array of evergreens will give the YMCA a year round presence while also being cohesive to the surrounding ecosystem.
