EDITOR’S LETTER A Story Of Survival

Some call it a horror story, others call it the best story of their lives, personally, I call it the biggest survival story of all time: High school. In this story called high school, you will meet a variety of new people, some will last for a few pages or chapters, but only a few will make it to the end next to you. Those people are your true friends. Your true friends will make the story so much more interesting and fun. They will make the sad chapters a little more bearable and the happy chapters even better. In this survival story, you will learn a lot about yourself. You will learn to form opinions on certain topics and what you stand for. You will find your voice, or choose to just be an echo in the school halls. You will discover when to raise your voice, and when to keep quiet. This story is filled with hard work. Many will agree with me when I say that procrastination is one of your biggest enemies in high school. Please, don’t make the same mistakes I do when it comes

to last-minute work. I promise you, the printer in the learning centre will NOT work when you need to print your LO task. It’s Murphy’s Law. Hard work isn’t always fun, but it is very necessary if you want your story to be filled with success. Luckily, not all the pages in this story consists of working and studying for upcoming tests and exams. Some pages will be filled with new and exciting adventures. Some pages will be filled with flops in the hospitality classroom or funny, mispronounced orals in the French or German class. You will have the opportunity to go on hikes filled with beautiful scenery with the outdoor club. You can learn to sing and dance in musicals. You can raise your voice during Debating or, if that isn’t enough, scream until you don’t have one at 4M. You can dress up and feel like a princess at events like Miss La Rochelle or many school dances. Whatever you choose to fill the pages with, make sure it’s a story worth telling. This survival story is entirely up

to you. Take chances and make mistakes. If some chapters in your story are filled with regret and mistakes, try not to worry about it too much. The best stories are filled with some form of regret and sorrow. (Ask anyone who has read a play by our good friend, Shakespeare.) The most important thing about making mistakes is owning up to them and learning from them. It is important not to dwell on them too much, simply turn the page and start a new chapter. Matrics, we only have a few chapters left. I hope that this story has taught you to love all the characters in this remarkable journey, but most importantly to love the main character: yourself. The pen is in your hand and it is almost time to write and ending to this survival story. Will it be a happy or sad one…? Whatever ending you choose to write, make sure it’s an unforgettable one and one that will make you proud for many more years to come. Andrea van der Merwe

Nadat The Greatest Showman in Desember 2017 vrygestel is, is dit dié musiekblyspel op almal se lippe.

Armand Barnard

1.Ek speel Phineas Taylor Barnum. Hierdie produksie is onmisbaar! Ons toneelgeselskap se dissipline is uitstekend.

Jamie Hendricks

1.Lettie Lutz (the bearded lady). She is the first “freak” Mr. Barnum comes across. Lettie has been hurt and put to shame, because she is different. 2.The character doesn’t give up on what she believes in. She’s strong and will stand up for others. We share the same passion for being heard and showing others it’s perfectly fine to be yourself. 3.Struggling with dance moves! 4.Working with the boys, so far is fun. It’s all about building new friendships, learning from one other and creating memories. 5.Being a part of it is a true blessing and an amazing opportunity. Every moment of the musical is magical and something to be excited about.

Mishka Brink

Carolyn Adams

1.I play Charlie Thumb (Tammy Thumb). She is very short, 103cm to be exact. She loves playing with her soldier figurine and people start to see her as a general in the circus. 2.I am also short and used to play with soldier figurines when I was younger! 3.I have no favourite moment; everything is just amazing! The funniest moment would have to be our first script read-through. 4.It’s great, they make rehearsals more fun. 5.I’m excited for everything! The singing, dancing, acting and working with an incredible cast to make this amazing musical.

1.Charity Barnum. She is kind, supportive and a nurturer. She is a mother to Helen and Caroline and the wife of Phineas Barnum. 2.We both have a nurturing spirit. She is also a no-nonsense woman. I’d say we share those specific characteristics. 3.Most moments are funny, especially the read-throughs, because we’ll focus so hard on a line that it comes out of our mouths in a hilarious way. 4.It’s no different really, because I have worked with boys before and in the theatre we’re all equal. 5.The songs! Performing it and hearing it!

‘n Terugflits: ‘n teaterervaring wat alle Larries not lank sal koester.

was beslis die Greatest Show!

Jy moet ook jouself geniet, want alles gaan so vining verby! 2.Projeksie is altyd ‘n uitdaging.

5.Come Alive was die beste deel vir my, want ek kon almal se passie, energie en liefde tydens daardie liedjie aanvoel.

Caitlyn Gilmore

1.I really learnt how to accommodate everyone and be patient since it’s a learning process for us all. I learnt how sometimes being in the background ties the scene, if it wasn’t for the play and extras the play wouldn’t be what it is. 2.I had to protect my voice and learn not to over exert it, and use the correct singing techniques. 3.The second night, it was such an amazing feeling, I can’t even put it into words! Everyone felt comfortable with each other and knew what to expect. It was so exciting, because the audience was excited too. 4.The very close bonds which formed and strengthened between some of us cast members and the love and support we have for each other is like no other. 5.Definitely This is me! It is so empowering and it’s an indescribable feeling to perform it.

8 |culture

Liza Theron 1.I learnt that music, drama and dance are a big part of who I am as a performer and a person. The fact that I had the opportunity to work with such amazing people was amazing and making great memories with them! 2.Realizing, on the first night, that my “sister”, Karla Naude, and I had been saying our line too early in rehearsals and that we had to just go with the flow and be in the moment. 3.The second night! The cast was confident and excited! 4.Besides the choreography, the people and the memories! I will never be able to remain calm if a Greatest Showman song starts to play. 5.Definitely From Now On! The song and the scene are both so special to me, and the message that they bring across is one that I believe we all should remember. We all need a real family and somewhere where we feel loved.

Nico Smit

5.From now on, die lied bevat so baie emosie en eerlikheid en dit was vir my die beste deel.

Janke Oosthuizen

2.My rok was stywer as my styfste jeans en albei moue het afgeskeur! 5.Beslis From Now On!

“The fact that I had the opportunity to work with such amazing people was amazingandmaking great memories with them!”

Biology and Beethoven It is said that to study, it is necessary to have a quiet environment without any distractions. Maybe this works for you. However, for some, studying in a quiet environment can be detrimental. This ‘quiet environment’ can make you end up fighting boredom and succumbing to the allure of sleeping at your desk!

ing the wrong type of music can however distract you from your studies and become counterproductive. The real challenge is to select the right type of music for studying. Here are some tips and ideas on how to pick the best study music for you!

More and more students are starting to bring their headphones with them to libraries, classrooms and study halls. But does it actually help to listen to music when studying? According to research, there are many benefits of listening to music while studying. These benefits include improved focus on a task by providing motivation and improving your mood, decrease stress or anxiety while studying as well as boosting your memory formation.

Never underestimate the power of classical music. Classical music is peaceful and harmonious making it one of the best options to listen to when studying. Listeners report better mood and increased productivity. It seems that there is evidence that Mozart improves mental performance. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself, his music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, a little of that intelligence might rub off on us.

Although some studies have shown that listening to music while you study isn’t good, for many people it is vital. It calms them down, which can lead to productive studying. Music may also help to elevate your mood and motivate you to study for longer periods of time. While it can be a challenge to stay away from the hottest hits, select-

Listen to ambient instrumental music. If prefer a more modern this may be the peroption for you. Relaxsounds of instruments

can be paired with modern tunes to get the best of both worlds with a similar effect as classical music. Recommendation: VSQ Performs the Hits of 2013, Volume 2 - Vitamin String Quartet

Tip 3

Listen to sounds of nature while studying. This type of “music” is perfect for those not so into classical music. While this is not exactly music, it is relaxing and increases concentration levels. It also keeps the listener’s mind engaged at a more subconscious level. What falls into this category are soundtracks of nature like waterfalls, rain or the sounds of the seashore rolling in. Recommendation: Calmsound.com

Tip 4

You’re studying, not at a rave! Listen to your study music at a moderate volume. Make sure that your background music is, indeed, in the background and is not distracting you or any of the students around you. Keep the noise level to a minimum so that the study level is at a maximum.

Tip 5

Plan out your playlist. Don’t wait until the time you’ve set aside for studying to create a playlist. Create it on your downtime so that, when it’s time to study, studying is the only task at hand and all you need to do as far as music is concerned is to press play. That way, you’ll be able to stay focused and won’t take any time away from studying. If you forget to plan ahead or don’t want to create your own playlist, don’t worry about it! There are some great resources that will do it for you, like the Study Music Project, which gives you a playlist of free study music each time you press play for more than an hour.

avoid spending hours selecting the songs. At the end of the day, what matters is not choosing the best music in the world but that your study remains productive. I hope that you find these musical study tips useful for your up and coming exams. You will know if you’ve made the right music choices if the music fades into the background and your study takes center stage. As soon as the music starts to cloud your study you need to change you study music choices… or just take a quick dance break to get it out of your system! Elizabeth du Toit

Tip 6

Make playlists that last for 40 to 50 minutes. When the playlist ends, this will act as a reminder to take a short break from studying. It is helpful for you to not have to shift modes and have to worry about changing your music. You will also have the added benefit of never having to look at the clock because your playlist will function as a built in timer.

Tip 7

Do not listen to music on the radio or a podcast when studying. The dialogue of the presenters and ads is distracting. You should have complete control of your best study music. While choosing the best music to listen to while studying is important, you should

The new trend of ‘thrifting’ is taking the world and the internet by storm. No longer is wearing something second-hand considered “tacky” or “unhygienic”, but rather it is viewed as vintage, retro, upcycled and an innovative way to find unique pieces for dirt cheap. Personally, I love thrifting. There is something special about the excitement of finding a pair of pants for R40, or a champion jacket tucked away in a second-hand shop for less than R150.

12 | XX

However, it is not as easy as going to your nearest “goodwill” for us in South Africa. Here, you have the scratch and get your hands dirty. Often times you won’t end up with anything, but the reward for consistent thrifters outweighs the disappointment. To make your thrifting experience a bit more fun and efficient, I have compiled a list of tips and tricks to help you master the art.

1.In South Africa, thrift shops are not the ones in Long Street which charge you R300 for a top. Rather, they are stores called ‘hospice shops’ which work for charity. Depending on the town, expect prices ranging from R15 — R50. The truth is it’s not as glamorous as you may think and you sometimes walk away empty-handed, but it’s where you’re most likely to find a bargain. Another way is to Google “second-hand shops” and scroll through the results. Places like Observatory are hotspots for these kinds of stores.

2.Facebook is your best friend. I know most of us might not have Facebook, but it’s the best place to find Markets and other thrifting events and deals. Check out pages such as The Second-Hand group, where hundreds of sellers offer up their second-hand goods. Another example is church markets, where prices are negotiable (and cheap) and where items are still really good quality. 3.Once you’ve found your store, be open-minded with what you buy. Ask yourself, “Can I alter it and what can I wear this with?” Make sure you test the quality and do not end up being blinded by the price tag. It is important to check the garments for stains which may not be able to wash out and remember not to worry too much about sizes. Always be prepared and have cash when going thrifting.

If sorting through clothes and going on treasure hunts aren’t really your thing, but you still want clothes at a good price, look for store coupons. For example, Superbalist offers R250 off your first purchase, Takelot R150 and Cotton On R100 with their perks system. Another trick with Cotton On is a birthday voucher they gift you with when you sign up for Perks (which gives you a R100 off on your birthday, with no minimum spend). Always try to take advantage of online sales (Superbalist has them quite often) and you’ll be able to score a few clothing items for a fraction of the cost. Not only is thrifting an innovative and a cool way to spice up your wardrobe, it is also very eco-friendly and green. I promise you you will not be disappointed with what you find! Give it a try and see just how much fun the world of thrifting can be! Danielle Pretorius

NO MORE BAD

DAYS Here are a few tips on how to combat those dreaded downcast days.

Everyone has those days when the only colour you see is a sickening shade of grey. Those days when life seems a little bit more difficult than usual. You may feel rejected by the entire world and like a fool, walking through life without a purpose. It happens to everyone, regardless of how successful you may be by worldly standards.

1.

Do not depend on other people to make you feel happy or validated. By depending on external validation, you are setting yourself up for disappointment and regret. Be kind to everyone and accept everyone, but do not expect the same in return. People are selfish. If you want to protect yourself from unnecessary rejection, don’t expect them to give you the TLC you may need on a specific day. It only makes a bad day worse if they are not able to accommodate you.

2.

Discard society’s view of ‘cool’ Finally, do what you love, whatever that may mean to you. If it does not correlate with what Kylie Jenner or any other influencers paint as ‘cool’, then so what? They are equally human and deal with the same insecurities and selfdoubts. Your secret weapons are self-acceptance and self-love, flaws and all. Remember, God does not create ‘uncool’ people. (Except maybe Hitler...and even he dealt with some serious internal struggles.)

14 |lifestyle

3.

Join a club at school or do community work. When you feel purpose driven your bad days will be considerably minimized. Find a cause and work towards something. This is not only good for your CV, but also good for your soul. Human beings were created to work, not to be idle. It adds purpose to life. There is no better feeling than working towards something and reaching a goal. It is utterly satisfying.

4.

Pray a lot. Grasp onto your faith and find your validation in God. He loves you more than you can fathom. You are accepted, significant and secure in Him. No opinion of others should touch your self-image or selfworth. Do not give anyone that kind of power over your life or your mood. ‘ John 15:13  Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.’ It is okay to feel despondent now and again, but even in those times of insecurity and self-doubt remember that you were wonderfully made. Therefore, nothing else in this world can ever compete. Layla van Sitters

1.Instagram is better than Facebook. 2.You regularly hear people say, “You spend too much time on your phone”. 3.Nickelodean and Disney channel used to be cool. 4.You owned a pair of crocs and you had Jibbitz (those shoe charms). 5.You know every High School Musical and Camp Rock song off by heart. 6.You had a sticker book, Scooby Doo, Loom bands collection and Silly Bandz. 7.You had a musical.ly account. 8.You’ve tried to become a ‘Youtuber’. 9.Your ideas aren’t your ideas, because every idea you think of is already on the Internet. 10.You look forward to the first day of the month, because you’ll finally have data again.

1.We are health-conscious. 2.We are entrepreneurial and concerned about our future opportunities. This means that we have dreams, but we are also realistic and strive towards financial security. 3.We are at an advantage, because we have grown up with technology being a normal part of our lives. We are able to cope with the rise of social media networks and survive in a world that has become dependent on technology. 4.Generation Z is diverse 5.We are aware of global and environmental issues and we want to bring about change. 60% of Gen Z’ers want their jobs to impact the world. According to the Urban Dictionary, “love” can be defined as the best and the worst thing that can happen to a person simultaneously. I specifically searched in this dictionary, because like everything in our generation, instant gratification has become the case and love the prime suspect. When did love lose its innocence and forever become a month? When did WhatsApp become our communication and Social Media our boasting site? Don’t you miss the days when love was holding hands in primary school or trading stickers at break? Or when love letters were “cool”? When did introductions become direct messages and faceto-face dates become FaceTime chats? When did being interested turn into a “right swipe” and an identity become a Tinder profile? We unfortunately live in a society who forgot the concept of love. Love is not just physical. It is more than the kisses you share and the hands you hold. It is more the photos you post on Instagram and the social gatherings you attend together. Love is about the feeling that you get when you are with another person. It might sound cliché, but you truly know you love someone when you can

be at your rawest forms with them – when you can be unapologetically you. Trust me when I say, that love can be heartless at times, but as Alex Russo’s mother, Theresa, told her, “You are one heartbreak closer to finding your one true love.” Girls, do not settle for less and cut yourself short. Wait for the guy who buys you flowers and pays you sincere compliments. Wait for the guy who makes an effort to see you and who makes you laugh spontaneously. You are solid gold and never forget that. You are worth more than second thoughts and maybes. We as girls, need to start knowing our worth and then adding tax. If I can give any advice, it would be to reduce the amount of screen time and rather invest in a conversation. Keep your relationship silent on social media, but not the fact that you are in one. Lastly, when you are in the honeymoon phase and a specific personality trait of your significant other irritates you – it will not get any better in the future. The person behind the cell phone screen is maybe not the person you have come to know

personally. So I say swipe left for this low effort behaviour. Life is not a fairy tale, but one thing is for sure... Cinderella did not ask for a prince — She asked for a night out and a dress. So, you just keep on keeping on. Your Prince Charming will eventually be there to pick up the fallen slipper. Swipe right on yourself. Aidan Harmse

Wat is All Girls’ nou eintlik?

Liza Theron: “All Girls’ was goed, opvoedkundig en vol pret. Mia Boshoff: “Ek het All Girls’ baie geniet. Joline van Zyl:”Dit was vir my regtig ‘n lekker ervaring.

Janke Oosthuizen: “Die hoogtepunte was definitief my span! Ek weet nie of daar laagtepunte was nie. So watch this space vir volgende jaar.” So sien ons uit vir All Girls’ 2020. Emma Basson

Have you ever found yourself staring at the face of the Mona Lisa for too long, wondering what the cultural significance behind her charmingly evasive smirk is? Have you ever stared too intently at the dimples sprinkled carelessly around the mouths of giggling children, wondering where their joy stems from and why it is so easy to return the gesture? Why do people smile, and what does a smile actually mean? If we approach a smile from a purely biological perspective, it is a recognized sign of submission, mainly expressed amongst primates. Usually, in the animal kingdom, when the lips of an animal are curled back and the teeth bared, the animal in question is ready to do some serious harm. However, if the lips are relaxed and the teeth are together, the animal in question has no malicious intentions. Oddly enough, a smile cannot be ‘taught’. It comes as second nature to humans (and some other animals). Expressing joy as a parting of the lips, a creasing of the eyes and rhythmic shrieks (laughter) is a natural part of life. Children that are born blind, smile just as broadly as children with perfect vision. This indicates that smiling is something ingrained within our souls, as it is not something that we replicate because we see other people doing it.

From a social perspective, since smiling is a sign of submission, it is interesting to note that the most successful politicians (and members of the more successful facets of society) do a lot of it. Smiling cultivates a sense of security amongst people, not only because it is a process in which muscles contract and many endorphins are released, but because it stimulates our facial muscle control, rendering it contagious. That would then, in Laymen’s terms, place smiling in the same category of “contagiousness” as the common cold. A beautiful thing about the human body is that it is destined to express joy. It has been proven that if you smile more you will condition yourself to become happier, because you will force your brain to release the hormones responsible for your happiness. So, much like you can train a dog to be obedient to its master, you can train your brain to be a little more accommodating towards your feelings just by smiling when you feel a bit blue. Now, if you plan on being happy for the rest of your life, it would be in your best interest to smile more often, because not only will you become the social equivalent of a flame to a moth in terms of attracting new friends, but you will also live longer. People who smile more often experience more success and they generally tend to live

longer by about 5 — 7 (compared to people who don’t). If you use it to your advantage, you may even end up in positions of power, because people like to be led by people that they trust. Next time you find yourself getting lost in the enigma that is Mona Lisa’s smile, try to understand that smiling is a vital part of life. It is the small act of exuberant, uncontained happiness that makes the world go around. A smile is the ultimate way to face the world, because it promises so much more than positivity and tolerance. It promises hope, because it reminds one that everyone is indeed human. Who knows? Maybe your smile is the new face of Hollywood, or some obscure political revolution? It doesn’t matter what your smile is, because it can always be shared, and it could ultimately even inspire World Peace. Chin up sunshine, allow your smile to echo throughout this world. Allow it to illuminate the path for those who follow in your footsteps. Smile, because history is keeping a close eye on you. Ansofi Pretorius

great way. - Napoleon Hill “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.” - Babe Ruth (Hillary Duff, A Cinderella Story) Watter TV-reeks sal Juffrou vir die larries aanbeveel? 5. Suits, White Collar, Nashville en Binge Watch. Hierdie reeks is die Ware Jakob!

Wat is Juffrou se gunstelingherinneringe van hoërskool? 1. My kêrel se antwoord sou wees, “all over the place.” Noem die nommer EEN reël in Juffrou se klas. 3. 7. Ek het daarna my Nasionale Onderwys Sertifikaat gedoen.

Go Larries! Waarom La Rochelle?

1. Daar is regtig baie spesiale herinneringe!

4. Wie nie waag nie, sal nie wen nie. Dit is my lewensuitkyk. 5. Daar is so baie!

Hierdie werk hou my voltyds besig!

Emma Basson

‘If THE LOVE OF money is the root of all evil, why is it asked for in churches?’ Nothing quite compares to the harrowing image of the blazing Notre Dame being burned into one’s memory. On the 16th of April 2019, the entire world gasped in horror as the ancient cathedral was practically rendered to ash. French citizens watched in silence as centuries worth of history evaporated into thin air, leaving behind only smouldering splinters of what was once the roof of this iconic land mark. The raging flames eerily resembled the splattering fires that consumed the damned in Dante’s Inferno; which only adds to the gothic level of fear that this image stirred in the world. However, this isn’t why I am playing the Devil’s Advocate.

24 |news

If we look at the state of the environment, the economy, and even the state of life in the countless war-ravaged countries that are continuously underrepresented in the news, we can admit that the crisis of the Notre Dame pales in comparison to the issues that we must truly be concerned about. Not because of the controversy that this church has stirred in the past (if we were to remain faithful to the truths that history sometimes begs us to forget), but because the issue surrounding the church can be fixed. Easily, and at the leisure of whoever chooses to rebuild the fallen roof. The environment, however, is like a ripe banana in a fruit bowl. If we don’t take care of it now, it will expire at any given moment. What is

more important to people, a building devoted to worshiping the Creation that we reside in, or the Creation itself? After the events in France, many of the world’s wealthiest people donated large amounts of money to fix the Notre Dame. Roughly 2.6 billion dollars, to be exact, was pledged in a matter of days. At the current exchange rate (when this article was written), that equates to about R37 279 840 000. Thirty-seven billion, two hundred and seventy-nine million, eight hundred and forty thousand rand. That’s enough money to buy Bruno Mars and to force him to sing a lullaby to you every night for the rest of your ridiculously rich life. With that money, you can:

3. 1.

Go to the Moon, walk on it and come back with a billion dollars to spare. (cost – $1.5 billion).

2. 4.

Purchase the Hannah Montana franchise, twice (cost - $1 billion).

Purchase the Solomon Islands, twice (cost - $1 billion).

6.

Purchase Buckingham Palace (depending on whom the Queen’s real estate agent is…)

5. This raised a number of international eyebrows, because when a similar crisis struck Brazil’s National Museum, not nearly the same amount of publicity was generated, even if the cultural loss is relatively equal. Why is it that so many charities struggle to keep their heads above water if billionaires can donate so freely to a cause? We are so quick to solve everything except the things that really matter, but even then, what power do we have? The same billionaires funding the Notre Dame fund the corporations that pollute our world into the depths of damnation. Due to the monopoly of life, all we can do is stand and watch in horror as the business tycoons that govern the world pour gasoline into the

greedy flames that will soon engulf Mother Nature. Instead of building bridges and coming up with solutions to save the ticking time bomb of the collapsing environment, they choose to build walls. The media, instead of raising awareness of the fact that we have less than 135 months left to get our act together, raise awareness of other issues such as the latest Regina George-esque insults that spew from the mouth of a certain leader of the Western World. When will we stop looking at life through stained glass windows and realize that we are only hypocrites that obsess over the things that we can control to justify the fact that we are afraid of what the future has in store for us? Who will stand and watch in horror as they realize that

we have destroyed the one cathedral that contained the most cultural significance of them all? Who will be left to pay for that? Ansofi Pretorius

3. Is fiksheid belangrik en hoekom? 4. Wat is jou gunstelingkleur en hoekom? 5. Enige doelwitte vir die span die jaar?

1. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. 2. 3.

1. The road to success runs uphill. 2. Growing up I always wanted to be better than my older sister. She started playing hockey when I was only six and I thought this would be another opportunity to try and beat her at something. When I started competing against her, I knew I was hooked for life. 3. Fitness for me is extremely important as I feel life is too short not to look after yourself. In saying this, hitting the gym or running is not enough to keep you fit. You need to follow a healthy lifestyle in general. 4. Orange – try and find me not wearing a cap. 5. I want the girls to be able to end off the year knowing that they have been a part of something special.

1. Don’t let someone else’s opinion of you become your reality. 2.

1. Be strong and do not give up for your work will be rewarded. 2.

“Go Micola, ek weet jy kan!” “Hardloop Milan, hardloop” “Go go go go gooo!”

(H)oops, we did it again!

Our U/16 and U/18 netball teams made a statement at the Waterkloof Netball Festival On the 15th of March. The U/16A and First Team netball squads left Cape Town International Airport and arrived in Pretoria. After a jog, some skills training and watching the other team’s practice at Waterkloof High School’s netball courts, we soon realised that the intense Gauteng air pressure burning our lungs and the determination of the other teams, was no joke. Luckily we had months of hard training and preparation behind us and we were more than ready for the four difficult days that lay ahead of us. Both teams had a tough first day. The First Team narrowly lost to Waterkloof High School, the host team of the tournament, and to Oranje HMS from Bloemfontein with a close score of 20 — 21. Fortunately,

30 |sport

the First Team also had their first great win of the tournament against Rand Park High. On Monday the 18th of March, the First Team played three matches and had two comfortable wins against Hans Moore and Heuwelkruin. The U/16s had their first win of the tournament against Heuwelkruin, winning by 6 goals. As the third day came around, our bodies began to feel the consequences of the six physical gruelling matches from the two previous days. With sore legs and weak arms the First Team took on Windhoek High School from Namibia. After a difficult match we took the win against them and Pretoria Girls’ High School. Unfortunately, we lost to Menlo Park in our last game of the third day. The U/16s were victorious in two games against opponents

Brandwag and Ben Vorster. The 4th and final day of the tournament arrived and our bodies were at breaking point, but we still had two games ahead of us. The U/16s won their last game with the score 13 — 9. The First Team also ended off the tournament with a big win against Prestige College. After four intense, physical days of netball, we boarded our return flight to Cape Town and could not have been happier to go home. The Waterkloof Netball Festival was a great success for both teams in preparation for the upcoming netball season. After 23 netball matches in total, both teams are extremely excited to take on whatever the season throws at them. Kaylie Lategan
