Competitive more than ever...

T

he exports by Turkish automotive sector, which is the driving force of Turkish economy, reached remarkable figures in the last decade. The Turkish automotive industry has been active since the early seventies. Since the full integration to the European Customs Union in 1994, Turkey has become a major production platform for global automotive manufacturers. As known, the auto parts industry of Turkey has recorded a dynamic growth in line with the automotive industry. From simple components in the mid-1960s, the sector ascended to produce high-tech components currently. The industry with its large capacity, wide variety of production and high standards, supports automotive industry production and the vehicles in Turkey and also has ample potential for additional exports. The leading foreign automotive parts manufacturers have established a presence in the country through joint-ventures, which dominate production and exports. The export potential of the automotive parts sector, coupled with the presence of major international automotive manufacturers, has attracted an increasing number of foreign investors. Key factors which attract foreign capital inflows to Turkey mainly include the market size, consumer composition, friendly investment legislation and liberal banking system together with other attractiveness arising from highly skilled human resources in production and management, the unsaturated domestic market with high potential, easy access to neighboring (regional) emerging markets, and low labor cost. The industry exhibit its full potential in major specialized fairs both at home and abroad. Our publications remain at the service of those businesses people seeking to increase their share in the increasingly competitive foreign markets. We are convinced that the events in which we participate have turned out to be an ideal ground for the business people operating in the automotive business. We wish them lucrative trade.

NGVA Europe Prefers Use Of Natural Gas And Renewables

NEWS

NGVA Europe promotes the use of natural gas and renewable methane as a fuel mainly in vehicles and ships regarding offering large opportunity for rapid reduction of GHG emissions within Europe’s upcoming strategy on decarbonisation of transport

N

GVA Europe, the region’s industry association that promotes the use of natural gas and renewable methane as a fuel mainly in vehicles and ships, says in a recent press release that natural gas vehicles offer large opportunity for rapid reduction of GHG emissions within Europe’s upcoming strategy on decarbonisation of transport: Changing to natural gas vehicles today makes it possible to reach the 2030 target of 30 percent greenhouse gas emissions reduction coming from road transport ahead of time. The shift to cleaner and more sustainable mobility will only work when using a mix of alternative fuels, the association argues, and requires discussion to be based on a functioning market and take into account the costs of the fuel, vehicles and components to achieve EU goals in a cost-efficient way. A realistic analysis shows that we are still relatively far away from that. “The upcoming strategy from the [European] Commission on decarbonisation should therefore recognise CNG and LNG vehicles as crucial tools to achieve Europe’s GHG reduction and sustainability goals for the transport

36

JULY 2016

sector. Natural gas contains less carbon than traditional hydrocarbon fuels and therefore emits much less CO2 as a vehicle fuel: 25% on average, opening up the road to carbon neutral mobility when blended with renewable methane (from anaerobic digestion of waste or electrolysis of excise electricity). No technical blend limitations exit. Combustion of natural gas reduces emissions of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) by over 90% compared to the very strict emission standards for new heavy duty (Euro VI) and light duty (Euro 6) vehicles, therefore making it an ideal “urban fuel” to clean the air. Natural gas engines also emit much lower levels of other harmful and carcinogenic pollutants like non- methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), including aromatics as benzene. Natural gas cars have lower emissions than the 95 g/km CO2 fleet average target by 2020 and offer the most costefficient CO2-mitigation option (€/t CO2) compared with other solutions. The break- even-mileage (km/year) for CNG vehicles is already reached at 13,000 km versus 47,000 km for plug- in hybrids or more than 100,000 km for electric vehicles (University of Cologne, 2014).

ACEA Advocates To Reduce CO2 From Cars & Vans ACEA members advocate an ambitious comprehensive approach to complement CO2 targets, in order to reduce CO2 emissions more successfully

T

he members of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) are fully committed to further reducing CO2 emissions. Our industry has already made significant improvements to the CO2 performance of new vehicles. Today, emissions from new cars are 35.7% lower than two decades ago. By 2021 those emissions will have fallen by 42% when compared to 2005, and we are committed to do more. However, current CO2 legislation solely focuses on reducing emissions from new cars and vans, which only make up 5% of Europe’s fleet. So, if we want to reduce emissions further, we also need to look at the impact of the use of vehicles on emissions. A comprehensive approach can reduce CO2 emissions more effectively by drawing on a full spectrum of solutions, whether this relates to the vehicle itself, alternative powertrains, faster

50

JULY 2016

fleet renewal, intelligent transport systems (ITS), improving infrastructure or altering driver behaviour. Combined with the industry’s continuous investments in vehicle technology, such measures have the potential to combat CO2 emissions more effectively. ACEA members therefore advocate an ambitious comprehensive approach to complement CO2 targets, in order to reduce CO2 emissions more successfully. Stakeholder dialogue To gain a better insight into the potential of such an approach, ACEA brought together the expertise of more than 50 relevant transport-related stakeholders throughout 2015. Main aim of this consultation was to identify the technologies and approaches that, according to the various stakeholders, can have the greatest impact on reducing CO2 from cars and vans by 2030. These findings have now been summarised in a report entitled ‘Joining forces to tackle the road transport CO2 challenge’, which can be found here. The report demonstrates that the comprehensive approach is not just a theoretical concept, but instead a real-world paradigm shift supported by a wide range of stakeholders. Consequently, this is not an ACEA report: as such its contents do not represent the positions of ACEA or its members. Rather, it belongs to those whose combined contributions show the enormous potential that joining forces could deliver for reducing CO2 emissions. ACEA’s position As Europe’s automobile industry, “we have also learnt a lot from this process. By listening to all those stakeholders we came to better understand the potential of all innovative solutions out there, and how these can be best realised in the most cost-effective way. These thought-provoking exchanges helped us to define our industry’s position, which has now been summarised in a position paper that outlines ACEA’s contribution to the debate on post-2020 CO2 targets.”

REIFEN 2016 Rolls With Great Success To Destination

T

he international Trade Fair REIFEN 2016 has rolled with great success to its destination. Almost 20,000 visitors from all over the world, including participants and visitors at the associated Future Tire Conference and RubberTech Europe learned about innovations in the industry between 24th and 27th May. With 675 exhibitors from 43 countries, the Essen Trade Fair already set new exhibitor records in the run-up to this top event. The REIFEN Trade Fair is thus again confirming its profile as the most important tyre exhibition in the world. REIFEN’s great significance within the industry is also demonstrated by the lavish stands of the twenty biggest tyre manufacturers in the world, such as Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear and Michelin. “It has been a huge hit with exhibitors and visitors alike: REIFEN 2016 will remain in everyone’s memory as one of the most successful tyre trade fairs of the past few years. I am pleased with the exceedingly positive response of many exhibitors, who are already making plans for REIFEN 2018 in parallel with Automechanika,” is the conclusion drawn by Oliver P. Kuhrt, Managing Director of Messe Essen. According to survey responses, around 80% of exhibitors also intend to take part in REIFEN 2018. “Only if it says “REIFEN” will you find a successful tyre trade fair inside. This year’s event has impressively demonstrated the industry’s level of trust in REIFEN,” adds Frank Mertz, Head of Sales at Messe Essen. Growth in importance of workshop and car servicing for the industry A good 90% of visitors are already planning to attend REIFEN 2018, which will take place in parallel to Automechanika in Frankfurt for the first time. In connection with this, over 90% said that the workshop and car servicing areas were becoming increasingly important to their businesses. The number of international visitors has remained at the same high level: Amongst countries outside Germany, Italy was in the lead as the country of origin, followed by France, Belgium, the UK and Poland. Although the majority of visitors had travelled from elsewhere in Europe, the largest percentage increase in visitors to the Essen Trade Fair came from Asia.

52

JULY 2016

30% of trade visitors, moreover, came from the tyre servicing sector, and a further 29% from tyre retail. Around 90% were decision-makers with responsibility for purchasing/ procurement. All in all, 89% of trade visitors gave what was on offer at REIFEN a positive rating - a slight increase compared with the previous event. More than a third also reported that they had placed orders at REIFEN, or intend to place orders, which also represents a slight increase in ordering activity. And the average order value of 112,317 Euros was more than 10% higher than at the previous event. 93% of visitors would recommend visiting REIFEN - which means that this value has also improved slightly. And the Oscar goes to – the winners of the REIFEN Innovation Awards The first highlight of REIFEN 2016 was experienced by several hundred guests the evening before the Trade Fair: At the ceremonial opening of the Trade Fair with honorary guest Hans-Werner Sinn, Messe Essen and the German Tyre Retailer and Vulcanisation Trade Association, sponsors of REIFEN 2016, presented the Innovation Award for particularly pioneering developments from the exhibition. As well as tyre manufacturers Bridgestone and Michelin, and workshop equipment manufacturer ASE Corghi, the Alsdorf company 4JET Technologies also won one of the coveted awards. The prize was awarded for a process which enables tyres to be marked with a QR code for the first time. In parallel to REIFEN, Messe Essen and the Chinese United Rubber Corporation hosted RubberTech Europe in Hall 11. This specialist exhibition for tyre construction, design and production successfully promoted communication between tyre manufacturers and suppliers. To complement this, the Future Tyre Conference, organised by the European Rubber Journal, took place for the first time during REIFEN and RubberTech Europe. The congress on 24 and 25 May will focus on current trends and their influence on the tyre sector. The majority of visitors regard the conference as a useful addition. For the first time, the next REIFEN will take place in parallel to Automechanika Frankfurt from 11 - 15 September 2018 in the Mainmetropole.

apan is stepping up efforts to protect increasingly computer-controlled road vehicles, trains and aircraft from cyberattacks ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. Officials in charge of information security at automakers, railway operators and air carriers cannot afford to lose a battle of wits with their invisible enemies -- hackers -- as they strive to prevent worst-case scenarios, including accidents and disruptions of service. Japan's move to step up cybersecurity comes amid an upward trend in the number of cyberattacks in the country, especially on certain companies and organizations. Eva Chen, CEO at Trend Micro, a major information security firm, warned that information security measures for cars will become even more important with the spread of Internetconnected vehicles. Chen's warning is based on her own experience. When she was driving her Internet-connected car on a highway on the

U.S. west coast in the autumn of 2015, the vehicle's display panel, showing the speedometer and navigation system, suddenly went black. The car in question was an electric vehicle produced by a major carmaker. Despite Chen's warning, however, it is still unclear whether her car's display panel went black as a result of a cyberattack. Two security researchers who claimed to have hacked into a car produced by Tesla Motors, the major U.S. EV maker, grabbed the spotlight at Def Con, a conference for hackers and information technology professionals, in Las Vegas in August 2015. Marc Rogers and Kevin Mahaffey explained at the conference how they had hacked into the Tesla Model S sedan. They had discovered vulnerabilities in software installed in the Model S and were able to make the EV come to a standstill remotely using a smartphone. "The reason we hacked the Model S is that it is the most connected car in the world," Rogers said, quoted by media outlets.

T

he 2017 Camaro ZL1 is poised to challenge the most advanced sports coupes in the world in any measure – with unprecedented levels of technology, refinement, track capability and straight-line acceleration. “The Camaro ZL1 is designed to excel at everything,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product Development. “It’s a 2+2 coupe offering incredible performance – acceleration, handling and braking – with the highest levels of technology and perfect chassis damping, making it suitable for everyday driving. It will compare well to any sports coupe, at any price and in any setting.” Acceleration for the ZL1 is delivered with a new supercharged 6.2L V-8 engine estimated at 640 hp (477 kW), and either a six-speed manual transmission with active rev matching or an all-new 10-speed automatic. Handling capability starts with the lightweight, stiffer structure of the all-new sixthGen Camaro, married with Magnetic Ride suspension and an electronic limited-slip differential. Standard technologies include Driver Mode Selector, dual-mode exhaust and advanced connectivity features. The Camaro ZL1 goes on sale late this year. Designed for Performance

JULY 2016

Functionality defines the Camaro ZL1’s form, with the exterior shaped during more than 100 hours of wind-tunnel testing and on-track validation to improve aerodynamics and cooling for track use. Accordingly, its exterior elements all play a part in managing airflow over, under and through the ZL1. “The design supports the Camaro ZL1’s exceptional performance and does so with compelling style,” said John Mack, Camaro exterior design manager. “From every angle, the elements coalesce to give the car a purposeful, super aggressive attitude.” The lower grille opening, for example, offers greater airflow compared to the Camaro SS, and the upper grille incorporates a new version of the “flow-tie” open bowtie insignia. There’s also a new hood, with a carbon fiber insert and heat extractor that pulls hot air from the engine compartment. Additional changes include a larger front splitter, unique rockers, a wing-style rear spoiler and wider front fenders – all tuned to improve aerodynamics for greater high-speed stability. Inside, there are standard Recaro front seats, along with a sueded flat-bottom steering wheel and shift knob. Chevrolet’s Performance Data Recorder is available. Fast with finesse A cohesive suite of performance technologies tailors ZL1’s performance for street and track. Features include an updated Magnetic Ride suspension, Performance Traction Management, electronic limited-slip differential, Custom Launch Control and Driver Mode Selector. It also has a stronger power-to-weight ratio than its predecessor, weighing 200 pounds less, while offering approximately 60 more horsepower and 80 more pound-feet of torque. The result is a one-of-a-kind driving experience. “Driving the Camaro ZL1 is best described as ‘fast with finesse,’” said Reuss. “It is beautifully balanced, with perfect damping and isolation for optimal performance and driver confidence in virtually any situation – from the Pacific Coast Highway to Willow Springs to Pomona.”

New Generation Mercedes Benz Lowers Emission

A

t the upcoming IAA this fall, Mercedes-Benz Trucks will showcase the latest generation of the OM 470 six-cylinder in-line engine, used in trucks and buses, which incorporates numerous new developments to achieve a further reduction in fuel consumption of up to 5%. The 10.7-liter, six-cylinder in-line engine benefits both from technical refinements relating to the ongoing development of the larger OM 471 which was introduced last year and from technology specific to the compact model series. The OM 470 is the most compact of the heavy-duty engines from Mercedes-Benz. It nevertheless features all the defining characteristics of its big brother, the OM 471, combining robust design, with sturdy steel pistons, two overhead camshafts with highly efficient gearing as the drive system, asymmetric exhaust-gas turbocharger, powerful engine brake and the X-Pulse common rail injection system with pressure booster. The top model of the Mercedes-Benz OM 470 engine range is a variant generating an output of 335 kW (456 hp) and 2200 N·m (1,623 lb-ft) of peak torque. With a specific output of 31.4 kW per liter of engine capacity (42.7 hp/l) and specific torque of 206 N·m/l, the OM 470 is one of the most powerful engines in its size category. Fuel injection continues to be based on the X-Pulse injection system with pressure boosting in the injector and unrestricted flexibility for modelling the injection system. As for the larger OM 471 engine, the maximum rail pressure has now been raised from 900 to 1160 bar. This results in a maximum injection pressure of 2700 bar. In contrast to the OM 471, the principle of the seven-hole

injection nozzle has been retained, on account of the compact design. A new injection nozzle with a higher flow capacity is employed, however. The shape of the combustion chamber is also new, with an omega-shaped recess in the piston. This shaping is adapted to the given conditions inside the compact engine. The same applies to the compression ratio, which has been increased by one bar to 18.5 bar. All these measures—in conjunction with a reduction in the exhaust gas circulation rate—lead to a further improvement in efficiency across the entire range of the engine mapping. This in turn lowers fuel consumption significantly. Rated engine speed lowered. A hallmark of the latestgeneration OM 470 is a very steep rise in torque and output in the middle rev range, while the maximum rates remain unchanged. This results in a lowering of the rated engine speed from 1800 rpm to 1600 rpm. A look at the power curve shows that the engine attains its maximum output more or less constantly across a broad engine speed range from 1450 rpm to 1900 rpm. The torque curve is configured along similar lines: maximum tractive power is attained nominally at 1100 rpm, but is available virtually constantly from around 900 to 1400 rpm. As a result of these two curves, the OM 470 offers excellent driveability. with high agility across a very broad usable rev range of around 1000 rpm. With its optimized injection and combustion, the engine is systematically designed for low fuel consumption. The untreated NOx emissions are eliminated by means of proven SCR technology and a new SCR catalytic converter. AdBlue consumption is consequently on a par with earlier Euro V engines, at around five percent of fuel consumption.

utomechanika Dubai 2016, the Middle East and Africa’s largest automotive aftermarket exhibition concluded, wrapping up three days of busy networking in a diverse market that remains on the radar of the world’s biggest suppliers of auto parts and services. The 14th edition of the annual showcase, which took place from 8-10 May 2016 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, featured 2,017 exhibitors from 58 countries, and attracted 30,018 visitors from 119 countries. Organised by Messe Frankfurt Middle East, Automechanika Dubai featured 25 country pavilions, and 38 international trade associations. Spanning 70,000sqm across 15 halls, the showpiece event grew eight per cent year-on-year in both exhibitor numbers and exhibition space. “Automechanika Dubai 2016 has raised the bar again, delivering real business opportunities, while shedding light on the latest advancements in automotive aftermarket services and technologies,” said Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East. “While it’s positive to see the show grow in-line with industry expectations, what’s more important is that our customers – the exhibitors and visitors – leave every year having come away with both tangible and intangible benefits that are measured in more ways than dollars and signs. This is how we know Automechanika Dubai will continue to be a force for many years ahead.” The strong turnout from the international trade reinforces the decision by leading global players to continue investing in the Middle East and Africa, as they showcased their innovative automotive technologies across six product groups of Parts & Components; Electronics & Systems; Repair & Maintenance; Tyres & Batteries; Accessories & Tuning; and Service Station & Car Wash. The largest two sections, Parts & Components, and Electronics & Systems, featured 1,408 exhibitors, a six per cent growth over the previous edition. At the forefront of the 118 Repair & Maintenance exhibitors was Caltex, the show’s Gold Sponsor and Official Lubricant Partner. Exhibiting for the first time at Automechanika Dubai, Caltex was showcasing its Havoline lubricant range for passenger vehicles, Delo (Diesel Lubricating Oil) for commercial vehicles, and its Techron fuel system cleaner. Adriaan de Kok, Area Business Manager for the Gulf and Middle East at Caltex’s parent company, Chevron Lubricants, spoke of the region-wide transition into demanding cleaner, more efficient, and better quality lubricants that are aligned with international standards. “The standards and vehicle requirements are rapidly advancing, and the demands on today’s engine are not what they were ten years ago,” said de Kok. “We’re seeing an adoption of really high standards by regional Governments, and an aspiration to be responsible when it comes to environmental criteria, engine protection, and fuel economy.” “Our vested interest is in consumer education and making sure that the aftermarket trade understands the benefit in our products to the end customers. And ultimately this leads to the Gulf’s aspirations of a cleaner, safer environment.
