Turkish automotive industry around the globe

t should be noted that the last decade has been a turning point for the Turkish automotive industry in terms of its integration into the world economy. Foreign firms that have been attentive to the potential that the Turkish automotive sector possesses have been investing in the country. They have begun to view their facilities in Turkey as their production center for the global markets. Actually, it is hard to keep the competitive position in the world market which is full of emerging players. Thus, manufacturers have shifted their operations to value-added automotive products and brand names. Currently, Turkish manufacturers have their own designs and brands in foreign markets. In evaluating the future export potential of the automotive industry, using crosscountry statistics, it is possible to indicate that Turkish automotive industry has comparative advantage regarding labor productivity, labor cost and the share of capital in the value added, especially with respect to the mature producers in the world. More than half of these manufacturers compete in international markets and set high standards of export figures. As a matter of fact, the world has become a global village and business knows no international boundaries. However, the rule of the game is dynamic competitiveness. The concept of competition has been undergoing a permanent change. Competition appears from all corners of the globe. Customers demand more. To respond, manufacturers are reducing costs and increasing responsiveness through outsourcing, sourcing globally and implementing demand-driven strategies such as pull-based inventory management. As noted earlier, the Turkish automotive supplier industry produces almost all types of parts, components and spare parts such as engines and engine parts, power train parts and components, brake and clutch parts and components, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, suspension systems, security systems, rubber and plastic parts, chassis, frames and parts, casting and forging, electrical equipment and parts, lighting systems, accumulator batteries, seats etc. Our publications remain at the service of those businesses people seeking to increase their share in the increasingly competitive markets. This month, we participate in the two notable fairs, namely Automechanica Frankfurt and IAA Commercial Vehicles Hannover. We are convinced that the events would be instrumental to increase business opportunities in the industry as usual. We wish all business people lucrative business.

Trucks account for about a quarter of CO2 emissions from road transport in Europe, even though they only make up less than 5% of total road traffic. In 2014, reported emissions from heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) were 13% above 1990 levels. This follows calls from four countries including Britain who called on the Commission to limit truck CO2 emissions. Britain, Belgium, Slovenia and the Netherlands lobbied for targets for CO2 truck targets, adding support to calls from Germany's

he automobile works not only for the domestic market, but also for the world markets, according to the statement of Faruk Ozlu, Turkish Minister of Science Industry and Technology. Visiting Sakarya Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SATSO), Minister Ozlu said they would prepare a draft law entitled Production Reform Packet and submit to the Turkish Grand National Assembly in the upcoming days. Highlighting the packet was very important, Ozlu recorded, “With this packet how much trouble and problem existing in front of the businessmen we will take into consideration to remove all of them.” “We target to make up a brand” Telling the works that have been managed by the ministry, over a question of a reporter about whether the domestic made car would be manufactured in the province of Sakarya or not, Minister Ozlu, “Let’s say this a domestic made automobile. The Turkish automotive industry would like to manufacture a domestic made brand. The sector in Turkey can be able to manufacture automobile at the plants in

Turkey there our workers work. So, we should say a domestic made brand rather than domestic made car. We would like to make a domestic brand.” Emphasizing the Turkish automotive industry with its capabilities, engineers, designers, producers along with the infrastructure being able to design and manufacture an automobile, he recorded, “Making an automobile is an issue predominantly being commercially rather than being a technical issue. Let’s do not see it as a technical problem. Making an automobile brand is a case weighing mostly commercially. Many of the automobile manufacturers have a 100-year history in the world. Look at Frances and Germans; they have a past of 100 years or over. There is a tough market competition in the world. We make automotive business not only for the domestic market, but also for the international markets. The domestic market is not sufficient to design and make an automobile. A renowned carmaker brand in Turkey says that they make 340 thousand cars per annum, of these 80 percent are exported with $3 billion of exports income. So, when we make up our car brand we will also install our plants markets abroad such as in Algeria, Kazakhstan as well.”

Mercedes-Benz Considers Electric Sprinter Van With plans to launch its first fully electric heavy-duty truck, Mercedes-Benz is in the early stage for an electrified Sprinter medium-duty van

D

aimler plans to launch its first fully-electric heavy truck ¬— and plenty of battery-electric passenger vehicles in the works — German automaker Daimler is in the early planning stages for an electrified medium-duty van, senior officials unveiled recently. Mercedes-Benz is considering launching a battery-based Sprinter van around the end of the decade, approximately the same time it plans the next redesign of the large commercial van. The first customers would likely be in Europe. Deutsche Post, the German mail service, is one potential customer that has expressed strong interest in a battery van. Several U.S. and global delivery services, including UPS and Federal Express, also are exploring the use of electric trucks and vans. An electric Sprinter would be deployed on shorter routes, such as urban package delivery, where range is less of an issue than for long-haul shipments. Such a circuit also would optimize the vehicle’s ability to recapture energy in stop-andgo traffic through regenerative braking. Mercedes is focused on a pure battery-electric version of the Sprinter, rather than a plug-in hybrid because the latter would require a more complex and heavy drivetrain that would raise costs and reduce payload capacity, Mornhinweg said. Mercedes is well-positioned to bring out an electric Sprinter,

48

SEPTEMBER 2016

as the van division would be able to access technology that is already available – or under development – for the automaker’s passenger vehicles. The company is planning to launch more than a dozen battery-based vehicles, including both plug-in hybrids and pure battery-electric models, by the end of the decade. Last month, Daimler said it was developing a heavy-duty truck for urban delivery routes. The vehicle would have a range of about 125 miles between charges and is part of the company’s technology development program. Daimler is developing electric vehicles because there is growing interest from customers and increased pressure from environmental regulators looking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution, especially in Europe and China. They want to keep gas and diesel-powered vehicles out of urban centers. Meanwhile, battery prices are falling rapidly, making electric vehicles more economically feasible. At the same time, advanced lithium-ion battery cells have become lighter, more energy-dense and more reliable. These trends improve the electric vehicle business case for the automaker.

“New Mobility World Logistics” At IAA Commercial Vehicles IAA exhibitors are already offering solutions for the urban mobility of tomorrow at the 66th IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hannover

H

ow will people and goods be transported in urban areas in the future – with the best possible efficiency and use of resources? Answers to this question will be discussed at the 66th IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hannover (September 22 to 29, 2016) at three specialist congresses at the “New Mobility World logistics.” The question will also be addressed by a large number of exhibitors in exciting studies and forward-looking solutions. From the self-driving electric bus, fully electric heavy and light local distribution vehicles – some of them with far-reaching automated driving functions – and light commercial vehicles with alternative powertrains, all the way to the use of drones for the last mile or less accessible locations, IAA exhibitors are already offering solutions for the urban mobility of tomorrow. During the 66th IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hannover (September 22 to 29, 2016), the “New Mobility World logistics” will bring exhibitors and visitors together with a wide range of activities. The new format, intended to function as

a multiplier for logistics and transport topics of the future, presents the five key themes: (1) Connected Vehicle, (2) Automated Driving, (3) Alternative Powertrains, (4) Urban Logistics and (5) Transport Services. Visitors to the trade show can familiarize themselves with these topics in various ways. There will be presentations in the form of congresses with discussion forums and exhibitions, test drives in electric vehicles, and demonstrations of products, services and applications in the “New Mobility World LIVE” demonstration area. We are also offering four themed guided tours for the first time. Congresses An important component of the “New Mobility World logistics” is the congresses. Their high-ranking speakers will cover the major topics of the future in detail. Furthermore, these events will provide sufficient space for intensive exchange of ideas and views. There will be seven themed formats within the “New Mobility World logistics.” Buses in local and long-distance transport – emissionsfree, safe and connected (Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, 10.00 – 13.00 h; Convention Center, Room 3B) Every year, people in Germany use buses for a total of more than five billion journeys. This makes buses the second most important mode of passenger transport after passenger cars. In local public transport, buses are used for about half of all journeys and are therefore the number one means of transport in this segment. Buses form the backbone of public passenger transport – not only in Germany, but worldwide. The challenges of climate change require the development of new, emissions-free propulsion systems for buses, too.

Drones in logistics: “From Vision to Reality” (Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, 13.00 – 18.00 h; Hall 19, Room New York 2) The market for drones is growing rapidly. A new field of business is emerging, with a wide range of applications. Logistics companies around the world are testing dronesupported solutions for the last mile and for destinations that are difficult to reach using trucks. They are working intensively on solutions that will make deliveries faster and cut response times. Whereas today drones are generally controlled remotely by people on the ground, in the future artificial intelligence will increasingly take over assistance and automation functions. Digitization in commercial vehicles (Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, 16.00 – 19.00 h; Convention Center, Room 3A) The increasing digitization of the global economy has far-reaching consequences for the future deployment of commercial vehicles. Integrating them into digital networks opens up novel opportunities in planning and control. Precision farming, platooning, partially automated driving and intelligent traffic guidance are just some of the buzzwords used to describe such developments. But at present the resulting options still face technical challenges and legal and organizational issues. New Mobility World Lab16 – Startups meet Industry (Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, 10.00 – 17.30 h; Hall 19, Room New York) “Our first “Pitching Day” for business startups provides an opportunity for young companies to present their ideas and solutions at the IAA and make contact with the commercial vehicle industry.” 6th carIT Congress 2016 “The digital revolution in the automotive industry” (Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, 09.00 – 20.00 h; Convention Center, Room 1)

The congress will focus on the topics of car-to-car communication, e-mobility and IT, infotainment systems including apps and their usability, autonomous driving, intelligent navigation, traffic management, driver assistance systems and the mobility of the future. IAA congress “Urban logistics of the future” (Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, 10.00 – 15.00 h; Hall 19, Room New York) Mobility and logistics are essential if urban spaces are to be both attractive and functional. And light commercial vehicles in particular are especially important. They deliver packages right up to the door, they serve the skilled trades as mobile workshops, and they are used by providers of nursing care and many other services. Because they operate right where people are, they also directly influence the quality of life in towns and cities. They are therefore predestined to use alternative powertrains, for example for clean and quiet urban logistics. However, in addition we need to develop and implement intelligent concepts to make urban logistics as efficient as possible with the best solutions for urban areas. IAA forum for automated and connected driving: “Commercial vehicles as innovation leaders in automation and connectivity” (Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, 09.30 - 16.00 h; Hall 19, Room New York) Digitization is bringing about a fundamental change in mobility and the automotive industry. One of the greatest challenges of our time is to continue providing functional mobility. The growing volume of traffic needs the best possible organization for the spaces available. One option is the seamless linking of different modes of transport. Furthermore, intelligent traffic control in real time will be essential in view of the increasing volume of traffic. Driver assistance systems, automated driving, and connecting vehicles and the infrastructure will play a key role in tackling these tasks. Resim: 66. Ticari araçlar fuarı Hannover

EU Plan To Clean Up Road Transport The EU’s ambition is for greenhouse gas emissions from transport in Europe to be at least 60% lower in 2050 than in 1990 By equipping the buses with

N

ew CO2 standards for cars, vans and, for the first time in Europe, trucks were announced last month by the European Commission in its long awaited Strategy for Low-Emission Mobility. The EU’s ambition is for greenhouse gas emissions from transport in Europe to be at least 60% lower in 2050 than in 1990. However, the legislative plan contained little on reducing emissions from the aviation and shipping sectors. The Commission confirmed it is working on post-2020 CO2 reduction targets for cars and vans to help meet the longterm aim of zero emissions from road vehicles. It will assess the setting of an intermediate target before 2030, saying ‘the fleet renewal times would call for action earlier rather than later’. The Commission is also exploring the feasibility of measuring cars’ real-world fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, which is now done for air pollutants (NOx) and would be a key deterrent for carmakers’ cheating. The Commission also said Europe will finally follow the US, China, Japan and Canada in introducing CO2 and fuel efficiency standards for trucks, the fuel economy of which has stagnated for 20 years. The truck CO2 standards would enter into force ‘well before 2030’. Meanwhile, road charging laws are set to be revised to allow for member states to differentiate charges for trucks based on their CO2 emissions. T&E welcomed the announcement of post-2020 fuel efficiency/CO2 standards for all road vehicles which will help member states meet their 2030 climate targets. T&E

80

SEPTEMBER 2016

executive director Jos Dings commented: ‘The Commission has distributed the EU emission reduction target for 2030 to member states, and promised European action on transport to give them a helping hand. This is a good plan but whether it works will depend on how effectively the promises are delivered. Cutting transport CO2 emissions will not only tackle climate change, but also address energy dependence, cut energy bills and generate much-needed new jobs.’ The document also leaves open the possibility of a Californiastyle mandate for manufacturers to supply ultra-low or zero-emission vehicles, which could provide certainty and economies of scale for Europeans to have a wider choice in electric vehicles. Meanwhile, plans to address fragmentation in the electric vehicle market include improved compatibility of payment systems across borders and the provision of realtime information for charging points. In terms of energy, the Commission said food-based biofuels are to be gradually phased out and replaced by more advanced ones, though the detailed plans will not be known until the announcement of the EU’s post-2020 bioenergy policy – due by the end of the year. T&E welcomed the news but said that the document’s support for natural gas trucks as a pan-European long-term solution is surprising given new evidence highlighting the high cost and low potential. The Commission also disappointed in its abdication of responsibility for aviation and shipping emissions to UN international organisations ICAO and IMO, which have been criticised for their ineffectiveness in tackling the sectors’ climate impact. T&E also pointed out that the Commission does not propose any major initiative to revitalise passenger rail, a key tool in decarbonising and electrifying transport. Jos Dings added: ‘While the European Commission has seized the initiative to decarbonise vehicles, the opposite is true for planes and ships despite the importance of European action in these sectors. Double hull tankers, lower-sulphur marine fuels, and carbon pricing for aviation are all policies ‘made in Europe’. Emissions from planes and ships must not be allowed to replace those cut from vehicles.’

Interoperable Electric Bus Charger From Siemens Siemens charging equipment, vehicles of every type and from different manufacturers can easily be integrated into one system

T

he new unit is able of charging buses from different manufacturers. German public transport operator Hamburger Hochbahn will be thirst to use it, the batterypowered buses built by Polish company Solaris will be charged at the same Siemens charging stations that also power the plug-in hybrid buses from Volvo which have been serving Hamburg since the end of 2014. The three buses from Solaris are equipped with a Siemens onboard charging system designed for the quick-charge stations. Having both the onboard equipment and charging infrastructure provided by one supplier not only ensures interoperability, but also harmonises the systems based on open international standards. By equipping the buses with Siemens charging equipment, vehicles of every type and from different manufacturers can easily be integrated into

one system. Each of the two charging terminals has a capacity of 300 kW and two charging stations. The stations can provide the buses with enough energy to enable them to operate a full day from terminal to terminal on line 109. The charging operation takes only around six minutes. The charging process uses open international standards IEC 61851 and ISO 15118 that are the basis for e-bus charging systems. These enable vehicles from different manufacturers to use the same charging system. This solution allows operators to select their e-buses independently of the charging infrastructure and ensures their interoperability.

Scania And Asko Test Hydrogen Gas Propulsion Asko is continuing its investment in sustainable transport services together with Scania start testing trucks with an electric powertrain

A

sko, which is Norway's largest convenience goods wholesaler, is continuing its investment in sustainable transport services. The company will together with Scania start testing trucks with an electric powertrain. Electrical energy is converted from hydrogen gas in fuel cells on board the vehicles. The hydrogen gas will be produced locally, using solar cells. The trucks will run in distribution service with distances of almost 500 km. "This very interesting project represents a unique opportunity to test the fuel cell technology for conversion of energy to our electric powertrains in a challenging customer operating environment. The conversion of hydrogen gas to electrical energy on board trucks, which are operated for longer distances will thus provide value experience for Scania's continued development of electrified powertrains," says NilsGunnar VĂĽgstedt, who is responsible for the development of Scania's hybridisation and electrified vehicles. Asko is Norway's largest wholesaler and supplies convenience goods to NorgeGruppen's chain stores but it is also an important supplier to institutional households and service trading companies. Asko consists of 13 different regional companies and with a fleet of 600 trucks is one of Norway's largest haulage companies. Asko has the ambition to achieve a climate-neutral business, where distribution of goods will take place using trucks, which run on renewable fuels and in the longer term completely on electricity. Experience from pilot testing of vehicles and the plant, which will be built for local hydrogen gas production, will form the basis for Asko's decision on a continued investment in hydrogen gas propulsion. The research project is partly financed by the Norwegian government. Scania will supply three-axle distribution trucks with a gross weight of 27 tonnes, where the internal combustion engine in the powertrain will be replaced by an electric engine powered by electricity from fuel cells and hydrogen gas on board the vehicle. The rest of the powertrain is composed of the same standard components used in the hybrid trucks and buses that Scania already delivers. Three trucks will form part of the research project, with an option for one further vehicle.

96

SEPTEMBER 2016

Various internal combustion engines are part of Scania's modular component range, which in hybrid drive are combined with powerful electrical propulsion. With sufficient electrical energy in batteries, the vehicle is fully electricallypowered for short periods. Scania is participating in the Swedish research project concerning electric roads, where the power is transferred via overhead lines and wires or wirelessly via the roadway or from special charging stations. The aim is to remove limitations in battery capacity and thereby achieve longer distances in electrical propulsion. The internal combustion engine can also be fully replaced by an electric engine. "In the near future, we will see fully battery-powered electric vehicles in service, primarily in sensitive urban areas as they are limited by their battery capacity and charging potential. Our own trials of battery-powered electric trucks and buses show that further development is required of batteries, which have the capacity to store the energy needed for long-haul goods and passenger transport before the internal combustion engine can be fully replaced," says Nils-Gunnar VĂĽgstedt. Various technologies will be tested in the Swedish electric roads project and in collaboration with Asko, with the aim of becoming less restricted by the shortcomings posed by batteries.
