The proven dynamism in action

T

he autoparts industry of Turkey has prospered rapidly in line with the automotive industry. The autoparts industry with its large capacity, wide variety of production and high standards, supports automotive industry production and also has remarkable potential for additional exports. As a result of the far reaching structural changes the competitiveness at the domestic level is replaced with competitiveness on a global scale. In addition, the consumer satisfaction standards based on domestic market demand has now become a quality standard satisfying customers worldwide. Following the shift of the focus on customers, markets, products and competition from the local level to the global level, Turkish manufacturers and suppliers now position themselves globally rather than locally. The proven success in the exports markets, however, depends on close technical links with industrialized countries and the willingness of their foreign partners to integrate their Turkish counterparts into their production-distribution networks as regular suppliers of high quality, low-cost components. The remarkable transformation in the sector urges automotive suppliers to improve their existing structures in line with the demands of global auto manufacturers. These improvements relate to the need to build advanced technological skills, infrastructure, research and development means; capable of effective and successful technical cooperation; skilled in unique product development; equipped with the ability to obtain shares in global projects as well as to have high brand competitiveness. Permanent change is the rule of the game in the automotive industry as usual. Today, the Turkish automotive industry is aware of the trend in international markets towards the increasing demand for environmentally-friendly products and adapt itself to developments within legal and technical regulations. Many manufacturers in the sector managed to produce in environmental management systems and quality management systems. By participating in the major fairs and exhibitions of the sector, our publications remain at the service of those business people seeking to increase their share in the increasingly competitive automotive market. We wish them and their trading partners a fruitful business.

Alternative Fuel Vehicle Surges 7.0% In 3rd Quarter

I

n the third quarter of 2016, demand for alternative fuel vehicles (AFV) in the EU grew (+7.0%), totalling 137,423 units. Results were diverse among different vehicle categories. On the one hand, registrations of both new electrically chargeable (ECV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) continued their positive momentum, posting doubledigit percentage gains during the last quarter (+20.2% and +29.2% respectively). Growth in the ECV segment was particularly supported by plug-in electric cars (+26.4%), which represent more than half of total ECV registrations. On the other hand, demand for cars powered by propane, ethanol or natural gas (NGV) fell by 26.2% to 34,384 units during Q3 2016, following the trend of the first and second quarter. The main reason for this has been a contraction of the Italian market, which accounts for the majority of these vehicles. Among the EU’s major markets, Spain (+44.8%), Germany (+33.9%) and the UK (+30.5%) recorded substantial increases in AFV registrations over the last quarter. Growth in these countries was fully driven by demand for electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Italy performed less well compared to Q3 2015 (-17.2%), due to a sharp decline in registrations of propane and gasfuelled cars, which where only partly offset by increases in the electric (+46.6%) and hybrid electric (+52.4%) segments. France showed a modest decline (-10.9%) in total AFV registrations, mainly due to a drop in HEV and LPG sales. France, however, still accounted for the second largest number of HEV registrations (10,070) after the United Kingdom. Among the EU+EFTA countries, Norway maintained its leading position with the largest number of ECV registered over the period: 11,287 units, up 44.1% compared to Q3 2015.

Automotive Sector Set For Record Automotive sector set for surpassing 1 million units first time in the exports; in line with this expectation the exports number would reach 1,1 million units by the end 2016

T

urkish automotive sector set for record in exports accomplishing the number of 1 million 100 thousand units first time in 2016, also with effort in November and December months the sales of the automotive would reach nearly last year’s figure, according to the statement of Hayri Erce. Stating the domestic market sales would accomplish the sales rate of last year despite some of negativity, Hayri Erce, General Coordinator of Turkish Automotive Distributors Association (ODD), said, “Delighting thing is the automotive exports boost paralleling to the recovery in the EU. We closed last year with the number of 992 thousand units, this year we will be surpassing 1 million units first time and expectation is to reach 1,1 million units in the exports.” Erce recorded they foresaw the 2016 year would not be a very well year, the first quarter of the year passed weaker than 2015, but the sector got recovery since April. Ponting out the sector had reached the upper level as the sales tempo in June, Erce said, “Unfortunately, I cannot say that we experienced the third quarter of the year very well regarding experiences in July. Now since September we have entered a new recovery process. Increase happens in our sales. As of current time there is some decrease in our sales over the last year. But we consider completing the year

in the domestic market with the sales figures nearly with last year together with the sales in November and December.” Domestic sales in 2017 might not be difference much more from 2016 Stating the year 2017 would be a process sheltering uncertainties both in the home and abroad, he continued, “Especially the decisions to be made by FED about interest rate and its decision to be made about normalization have a great importance. How will be the developments following Brexit in Europe? Relations of the UK and EU, European Central Bank’ monetary policies are important. A hot process is also persisting in our region. How would be conjunctural developments? In the home, the central bank monetary policies, the steps and reforms that would be taken directed towards growth seemingly would be effective. Healthier evaluations will be possible as entering 2017, taking into consideration these, but in terms of the domestic market our foreseeing will not be different more than 2016.” Expectation of production, exports and domestic market “If we close this year with the number of 950-1 million, the automotive exports increase paralleling to the recovery in the EU. Last year we accomplished the exports of 992 thousand units, this year we will surpass the number of 1 million units. This also will contribute to the production. Last year achieving the number of 1 million 350 thousand units I think this year would reach some 1,5 million units. These are utmost pleasing things on behalf of the sector.” Erce also highlighted reduction in interest rates reflected positively to the sales of vehicles.

ntroducing two new handheld instruments that meet the needs of the automotive industry for measuring interiors and exteriors: A two-in-one spectrophotometer that simultaneously measures color and gloss for interior measurements, and a multi-angle spectrophotometer for measuring metallic and pearlescent paints on automobile exteriors. Konica Minolta is introducing two new models specifically designed for automotive interior and exterior measurements: The Spectrophotometer CM-25cG, a spectrophotometer with specialized features for measuring interiors, and the Spectrophotometer CM-M6, a multi-angle spectrophotometer for measuring automobile exterior finishes. Konica Minolta exhibited these two instruments at K 2016, the international trade fair for plastics and rubber where the latest technology and products from around the world was seen, from October 19th to 26th in Dusseldorf, Germany. Konica Minolta, through its medium-term plan TRANSFORM 2016, is working to transform itself into a more customer-oriented company that assists in solving challenges faced by customers. The Sensing Business Unit, a top manufacturer of instruments for measuring object color and light-source color, offers high-quality instruments and solutions to customers throughout the world to support manufacturing from R&D to production. The two new instruments were developed in close collaboration with leading car manufacturers to find solutions to meet their challenges in production and rigorous quality control throughout the supply chain. By introducing these highly-reliable instruments, customers will gain from increased productivity and thus cost reductions. Spectrophotometer CM-25cG A compact handheld spectrophotometer with 45°c:0° geometry and a true high performance 60° gloss sensor for simultaneous color and gloss measurements of automotive interior trims and materials with a number of “world first” features. Being fully compatible with its predecessor model, the CM25cG’s perfect circular optical system achieves highest accuracy and repeatability levels, especially on textured or structured surfaces, regardless of measurement direction. As a world first, the CM-25cG offers simultaneous colour and gloss measurements with changeable apertures for either 7mm (MAV) or spot size 3mm (SAV) and a measuring time of less than 1 second. The CM-25cG is lightweight and offers a large and easy-to-read FTP colour display to read and manage measurement data either numerically or graphically. For perfect sample positioning, the CM-25cG is the first instrument to offer a true optical sample viewer in a 45°:0° geometry instrument. All CM-25cG are by default close tolerance (CT) instruments and thus, Konica Minolta proves once more its unequalled knowledge and ability in optical precision technology. Highest Inter-Instrument-Agreement (IIA) levels of just ∆E*ab 0.15 (Average on 12 BCRA tiles) within the CM-25cG, and the same for Inter-Model-Agreement (IMA) to the predecessor model series mark an unprecedented level of performance and accuracy. Multi-Angle Spectrophotometer CM-M6 A new compact handheld multi-angle instrument especially

DECEMBER 2016

designed for fast, easy but accurate measurement of all exterior car parts on the production line. The optical design and the 6mm measuring area allow measurements of curved surfaces with unparalleled ease of use and accuracy. The CM-M6 is a portable multi-angle spectrophotometer especially designed for colour measurement of metallic and effect paints and plastics. It uses a new, patented double-path illumination system with directed 45° illumination and 6-angle observation (15°/15°/25°/45°/75°/110° aspecular) from two sides. This results in accurate and stable results even on curved surfaces with an R=300 radius. Respectively, car parts such as front and rear bumpers, vehicle mirror bodies or door-handles on the production line can be measure rapidly, accurately and repeatably. Its compact and lightweight vertical shape is easy to hold in one or two hands and enables easy positioning, while the highresolution back-illuminated colour display is easy to read even under low ambient lighting conditions. The solid state and rugged construction as well as the sleek and lightweight body make the CM-M6 the perfect instrument to measure critical parts, unavailable to conventional multi-angle instruments. About Konica Minolta Sensing Europe B.V.: Konica Minolta Sensing Europe B.V., part of Konica Minolta Inc. Pointing out the automotive exports had been in upward trend in recent years and this stemmed from the international companies shifting their production to Turkey, Kanca said, “The automotive is a sector which advances with slow steps and its route change slowly. This is a good thing in the current growing period. But, as for it gets diminishing, it is substantially quite bad characteristic.” Fiat Egea, Renault Megane and Toyota C-HR effective in export increase TAYSAD Deputy Chairman Albert Saydam, showing Fiat Egea, Renault Megane and Toyota C-HR models as the example in key export increase within the last two years, and said the sector’s production and exports surged thanks to those models. Renault plans to produce 90,000 units of Megane model per annum, Toyota is planning to produce 179,000 units in 2017. Saydam recorded, “These productions are the result of decision made to carrying platform 3-4 years ago. Now we enjoy growth effect of these decisions. The thing we should pay attention is that what would be platform decisions next year or after that, or whether might we miss these.” The vehicle production of the automotive industry records highs since 2012 onwards and since 2015 onwards in clearer way, according to the data of Turkish automotive industry.

Sales Of Winter Tires To Reach 6 Million Units This year use of winter tires will reach 6 million units in the Turkish market; this figure might raise some in conjunction with hardness of winter circumstances

M

ustafa Karakas, Chairman of Automotive Tire Seller and Service Business Association (LASED), said; “Use of winter tires will approach by 6 million, in case the winter conditions might be tough this figure would jump up some more. The trade aspect of the winter tire is predicted to be between TL7-8 billion.” Even snow and rain will not happen when weather temperature drops under 7 degree Celsius, using winter tires has a great importance in terms of safety. Pointing out traffic accidents of which mostly stemmed from use of insufficient tire, Karatas continued, “The freight index of the winter tire must be in the same class of summer tire. As for speed index can be lower than the summer tires. In tire sizes, a narrower tire sole than summer tires can be preferred. 60 percent of vehicle accidents stems from tires. The significance of tire factor emerges in reduction of traffic accidents. Indicating the tire sector has achieved a good trend within the last 5 years, as well as 28 percent growth, Karatas said, “In 2015, performing 9 percent growth accounts for the sales of 22 million tires. Importance of tire factor appears in decreasing of traffic accidents. The trade volume of the Turkish tire sector reaches by TL28 billion.” He added they were hopeful this year. In 2015, use of winter tire was 5 million, this year it would reach by 6 million units, according to the condition the figure would raise some, in

We observe that many firms have quitted imports from the countries remain out of the agreement. Both additional customs duty implementation and rising of foreign currency caused the increase in tire prices.” “We are ready for domestic made car” Highlighting Turkey’s supplier industry production capacity was ready for the domestic made automobile, Karatas said, “Turkish tire sector has every kind of capacity to support as supplier to the domestic made automobile. Major Countries Commit To Increase Share Of Electric Vehicles Electric vehicles can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future

R

ecognizing the importance of reducing carbon emission in the transportation sector, eight major nations – Canada, China, France, Japan, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States of America – signed a Government Fleet Declaration, pledging to increase the share of electric vehicles in their government fleets and calling for other governments to join them. The Declaration was announced at the Marrakech Climate Change Conference (COP22) and was developed under the aegis of the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Electric Vehicles Initiative (CEM-EVI). The Declaration emphasises the renewal of government fleets and showcases specific and voluntary commitments of these countries to accelerate the introduction of low-emission vehicles in their vehicle fleets. Through this Declaration, the eight signatory governments are taking a leadership role in this movement and sending a strong signal for the need to speed up the transition to a low-carbon transport. Greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector today account for nearly a quarter of total emissions. The share will increase significantly in the coming decades unless high-impact actions are taken. Changing the trajectory of emission in road transportation involves a global shift towards low-emission vehicles, along with the adoption of broader sustainable transportation principles. The voluntary commitments taken by these countries will reduce fleets’ greenhouse gas emissions and help accelerate the transition to low-emission vehicles, in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The members of the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Electric Vehicles Initiative cooperate to facilitate the global deployment of 20 million electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles, by 2020. This Declaration is also in line with the Paris Declaration on Electro-Mobility and Climate Change and Call to Action released at COP21 during the Lima Paris Action Agenda (LPAA) Transport Focus, which specifies that at least 20 percent of all road transport vehicles (cars, 2 and 3-wheelers, trucks, buses and others) globally should be electrically powered by 2030 to respect a less-than 2-degree pathway. This Declaration also aims at encouraging non-state actors, such as cities, regional and state governments, companies, sectorial federations and other organizations, to accelerate the energy transition with the introduction of clean vehicles in their fleets, including transit buses, taxi fleets, as well as municipal and corporate fleets. Ségolène Royal, French Minister of the Environment, Energy and Marine Affairs, responsible for International Climate Relations, “The adoption and entry into force of the Paris Agreement marked a

62

DECEMBER 2016

turning point in the fight against climate change. The world’s attention is now focused on the policies and measures that will follow this success and I am glad to see France and other nations sending a strong signal to all citizens and to the industry through this Government Fleet Declaration.” Jim Carr, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, “The Government of Canada is leading by example and committed to delivering a low-carbon, clean growth economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We are pleased to support this Declaration by accelerating the deployment of clean vehicles in our fleet. This support for electric vehicles contributes to our government’s overall strategy to advance clean technology and innovation in Canada.” Wan Gang, Chinese Minister of Science and Technology, “As one of the leads on CEM-EVI initiative and the host of the 8th Ministerial Conference on clean energy, China is very pleased to join the Government Fleet Declaration. We hope to implement the Paris Agreement actively, deploy and promote the electric cars together with more countries that have a common objective.” Koichi Yamamoto, Japanese Minister of the Environment, “Energy efficient next-generation vehicles is one of the key technologies for drastic CO2 emission reduction in the transportation sector. National and local governments are expected to take the lead in the deployment of such vehicles. The Japanese government plans to renew almost all of the government vehicle fleet to nextgeneration vehicles by 2030 in accordance with the Government Fleet Declaration to accelerate the worldwide deployment of next-generation vehicles.” Christine Harada, Federal Chief Sustainability Officer, White House Council on Environmental Quality, “The Obama Administration is committed to taking responsible steps to combat climate change, increase access to clean energy technologies, and reduce our dependence on oil. By working together across the Federal government and with the private sector, we can ensure that electric vehicle drivers have access to charging stations at home, at work, and on the road – generating a new way of thinking about transportation that will drive America forward. These announcements demonstrate a continued partnership between the Administration, states, localities, and the private sector to achieve these shared goals.” Dr Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), “Although the global fleet of electric cars has surged past the 1 million milestone, it still represents less than 1 percent of what is needed to decarbonise the energy system. The Electric Vehicles Initiative, including its new Government Fleet Declaration, can play a key role in unlocking the full potential of electric vehicles. The IEA – as the new home of the Clean Energy Ministerial – is honoured to be at the heart of its work.”

So, it is anticipated a new sales record might be broken by the year-end. Together with being enacted of draft law which foresees regulation in Special Consumption Tax applied in automobile sales, would spur the sales of luxury automobiles. Purchasing plans of those who want not to expose to possible tax increase have played role in this sales expansion of automobiles. Also upward trend in the foreign currencies has affected the sales of automobiles. Motivation in the demand has uplifted the sale prediction that previously determined as

If this expectation might realize, a new record would be broken in the sales of automotive. Meanwhile rise in the foreign currencies has reflected as increase to the automobile prices. Many firms have begun to raise the prices. But the increase of foreign currencies has reflected in limited rate to the automobile prices. In 2017, outstanding increase is expected in the automobile prices. For this reason, the automobile market would diminish according to the scenarios for the year 2017.
