Life has been hard for 11 year old Axlam. She was born with a hearing impairment, and her family fled their home in Somalia because of conflict. School seemed impossible, especially without a uniform. That’s what you can give a child like Axlam. The uniform also provides safety for girls, as it shows they are expected at school. Now, Axlam dreams big:

“I feel good when I enrolled in school. It’s the best feeling ever! I am fond of English and want to become an English teacher after completing my education.”

What can save trees? Save time? Save eyes? A fuel-efficient stove for a family in Burundi! Smart design using homemade bricks, cow dung and clay, the new stove means a family needs only 1/10 of the firewood they used before. Plus, there’s much less smoke to damage eyes. The food even tastes better because it cooks faster. Mum, Pascasie, says:

“I like to cook beef, rice and beans on my stove You make things better for us. Thank you!”

VEGGiE VEGGiE GOOD

Chilies are Rosina’s favourite vegetable. Not just to eat, but to grow and sell to her community in Indonesia. You provide the seeds she needs, plus training in how to improve harvest. Cultivating the soil. Composting. Protecting her plants from pests. Rosina has joined a Savings Group, and is now working hard to save money. Rosina thinks big:

Growing children need healthy food to stay strong and support their brain development. That’s why your one month supply of 10kg of porridge is so precious to children in Somalia, especially children impaired by disability. Mumina is mum to a son with many challenges. She says porridge, made from maize or rice, is vital in the ‘lean season’ when food runs out:

“I have a dream to develop my chili and vegetable farming in the future. If this can run, then our family income will increase.

“The porridge I receive for my family is packed with vitamins, and always comes at the right time for us. Now my son and family are in good health again!”

WhAT’s THE BUzz?

In Ethiopia, you can provide a farmer like Abay with two modern beehives PLUS training. A hive can produce two harvests, each of 30kg, per year. This means the two hives produce 120kg. Honey sells for $11 per kg, so your Gifts of Grace can produce $1,320 every year! No wonder Abay is so thankful:

“Without your support, our destiny would be harsh. I would not be able to farm, and I’d give up hope. Your support is life-transforming!”

Majok loves farming. So, as soon as floods subsided in South Sudan, he was back at work digging his field to plant maize and cereal. The challenge he faced was having the right tools and seeds. You provide these with your

Bananas are full of vitamins and minerals that help children grow. This is vital in poor communities in developing countries. In Nepal, Jayaram is proud of the banana plantation he has developed with Aussie support through ALWS. You provide training and start-up essentials for banana-growing, and also in marketing skills to maximise family profit.

“When I reflect, I know I have come so far! I am grateful for the support that has taught me so much and made my family financially self-sustainable.”

Mohammed and his family have lived as refugees in Bangladesh for seven years, after fleeing Myanmar. Your Gifts of Grace provides urgently needed support to start a home garden to provide fresh vegetables for the family. You provide seeds, tools, training and a chicken for eggs and manure. The family you help provide the hard work to achieve success!

“I’m really proud of what I have done, and hope now to fulfil my dream of opening a modest grocery store to represent my victory over adversity.”

When you rely on farming to feed your family, and extreme weather destroys your crops, a helping hand is a precious gift. Through Gifts of Grace, you provide farmers like Merisiyana in Burundi with simple farm tools like hoes, shovels and garden forks. No longer do the family have to survive on only one meal a day, they can look forward to healthy vegetables.

In a country as poor as Burundi, farmers can’t afford fertiliser. The solution? Goats. Or, more precisely, what comes out of the back end of goats. That’s right, poo. You provide a goat PLUS training in cheap climate-smart farming, like using manure for fertiliser. Joselyne says before her goat, she could only grow enough food for one family meal each day. Now:

“The goat gives the manure. I learned how to use it to fertilise my plants and plant in rows and get better crops. Now my children can finally eat!”

FLOAT FOR BUsiNEss

When Matiop’s farm in South Sudan was flooded, all his livestock was lost.

The land has been under water now for years, so Matiop had to find a new way to provide for his family. He took up fishing, with a single spear.

Then, through ALWS, Matiop received a Fishing Kit of nets and hooks so he could catch more fish. Soon there was enough to have extra to

Matiop made enough profit to buy some goats to breed as a back-up business. If ever fishing fails, he can sell the goats to support his family.

What Matiop hopes for now is an improved canoe, so he can row out into deeper water, and increase his catch still further, so his children can complete a full education.

“After losing everything to floods, my life was shattered. My children ceased from attending school and my family was extremely starved.

“The money I make from fishing enables me to support my family. I bought my cows. I have sent my children back to school. However, my canoe is spoilt, and I urgently need a new one to assist my fishing business.” - Atong Fish FOR FREEDOM $41

Before she received her sewing machine, and training in tailoring, life was a constant struggle for Hira and her family in Nepal. Hira also learned business planning and, with a lot of hard work, developed a flourishing tailoring business. Your Gifts of Grace can provide the same support to another lady in Nepal, to become a confident independent leader:

sOAP OF HOPE

Handwashing is a life-protector for children in poor countries at risk from deadly diarrhoea. Soap-making is a business that can help a family be independent. So, when you suit up a community-member like Isaia in Burundi with gloves, apron and boots, and train them to make soap from local tree nuts, you give a double benefit. That’s why Isaia says:

“We have bought a pig and a cow with our profits. We would like to thank you for this project and the way we can now live better.”

“My family no longer face the hardship we once did. I am proud I can now provide for my children, and ensure they receive a

Minara was forced by conflict to flee her home in Myanmar to seek safety in Bangladesh. That’s where you can support a refugee like her to start a business, Minara received training in knitting, plus needles, yarn, fabrics and scissors. She now makes and sells pillow covers so popular she can expand her business:

“The income has allowed me to invest in two chickens and seeds to cultivate vegetables. The rest I reinvested in my crafting business to support our family.”

How would you like to help a family in Burundi build a house?

You supply the trusses, iron sheets for the roof, even the nails. PLUS of course, the training. The family provides the hard work, making the mud bricks by hand. Together, you build a house 5m x 7m in less than two weeks. Jean Marie’s family was inspired by their Gifts of Grace house success:

“Thanks to the training I have received, and the profits I make, I now also build another house on the plot next to mine. My two eldest boys live in there.”

Extreme weather is a life-threat to families who must survive on the food they grow. In Nepal, a simple plastic sheet can be a ‘game-changer’ for a family like Tikaram’s. He dug a huge hole, then lined it with the plastic sheet to make a pond. This now provides year-round water to irrigate crops. Harvests improve. Profits increase. Health is better.

“Now, we have a reliable water source, and our crops

PARTNER FARMERs ... GROW FOOD ... FEED

Imagine trying to feed your family from what you can grow on half a hectare.

You have few tools. No knowledge of modern farming methods. And extreme weather threatens what little you can produce. This is what farm families like Pontien’s face in Burundi right now.

You can join a Burundi Farm Partnership and support 20 of a community’s most at-risk families for farm success, and security for their family.

You provide practical help to:

• grow enough food to feed their families

• store seeds to plant for next season

• sell surplus to buy household essentials

• expand and diversify their farm business.

Your partnership investment provides:

• certified seeds – beans & maize

• hoes, shovels, machetes, pick-axes, rakes

• wheelbarrows • fertiliser

You support training in modern farming:

• ploughing techniques

• seeding methods

• organo-mineral fertilisers

• pest and disease control

• market gardening

• composting and mulching

• reforestation

Together, you grow a ‘supermarket’ of crops:

• corn • beans • bananas

• plantains • legumes • cereals

• vegetables

• fruit • coffee

Because your ALWS Burundi Farm Partnership supports a Farm Group of up to 20 families, your investment directly impacts more than 100 people! Your commitment, and their hard work, supports families to protect themselves from hunger and build an independent future.
