Hello. My name is Iman. I am 13 years old and live in a small village in Ethiopia.
i MUsT DO A LOT OF JOBs
.
Early in the morning I will wake up. I will clean the house, and do sweeping with a broom.
I then go to the kitchen to see if there is FOOD FOR ThE FAMiLY. If there is not, I will find what I can. Then the family will eat.

For cooking, I must first prepare the fire.
I COLLECT FiREWOOD from the forest, or we buy it from the market. I clean the containers, then get the pan hot.
I prepare bread, and also pounded beans with chilli and onion. Sometimes we have potato or carrot. We only have meat sometimes.
There is NOT ENOUGH WATER here. During the drought, water had to be trucked in – 60 litres per family per day. It makes me sad when drought comes.
We plant crops in the community, but when drought comes, they die.
There may be three to four months we do not have water.

We have ChiCkEns. Each morning, I let them out and give them water and food. We eat the eggs.
After I finish every duty for the family, I will clean myself, and then have breakfast. Then, when I come home from school, I help look after my sisters and brother.

“My hope is for my children to be educated, so their life can change. Girls don’T normally finish sChool , they get married. After a year, she would have a baby. I am not happy with this, but it is enforced by the culture.” - Iman’s Dad

I do not want to think about marriage. I am not happy with the idea of being one of four wives, but if this is my culture, then this is what I must do.
I would like to go somewhere else, where LiFE is BETTER .

There is also a shORTAGE OF TEAChERs.
I am happy when I play games with my friends. We throw the ball at each other. This game is called Mary, Mary. I am very good at this game.

I would like to finish school to Grade 12, and then I would like to do even more education. I would like to be a doctor so I can hEAL siCKNEss in my community.
