President REPORT Hello Members and Committees Just a few words to keep everybody up to date with changes that came out of the Dalby Management Committee Meeting held in November.

Firstly the 2025 Budget was approved by the Management Committee. In this budget expenditure has been cut by approximately $500,000 on the 2024 Budget. On top of these savings, we have funded the reduction in affiliation fees to Committees from $1650 to $100 at a cost of approximately $200,000. As well as making the changes required in Campdraft One to allow Event Membership at a cost of $30,000. This all adds up to a significant savings to the members and committees. The changes undertaken in the 2025 Budget are comprehensive but with your support I am sure we can achieve our goals.

Secondly at the meeting two new Councillors, Cheri Stanger and Erica Hanrahan were appointed to the Management Committee.

We welcome these ladies and thank them for stepping forward to contribute to the ACA and the sport of campdrafting.

Nominations will be called in the New Year for Management Committee and Executive positions. I encourage any member to nominate for these positions if you are interested in being involved and giving back to the sport.

On 11 November the Executive met and appointed Les Hopkins to the position of Secretary/Operations Manager in a voluntary capacity. This appointment was confirmed by the Management Committee unanimously. This is a huge role in the ACA and Executive and I thank Les for his contribution in this role. Contributions such as this are how we have been able to achieve the savings in the Budget that we have.

I would encourage all members and committees to make sure that the President, Executive, Les as Secretary/Operations Manager and your Management Committee Members as your first point of contact for input or inquiries, not the ACA Office Team. We are working to review the role of the office over the next few months.

After listening to Committee requests on run restrictions, the Management Committee decided to remove the Committees obligations to adhere to run restrictions and allow them to run the event as they see fit taking into account their unique circumstances.

There have also been changes to minimum prize money for Open for Open drafts. Full details and rule changes can be found in the meeting minutes which are up on the ACA Website.

So, in closing I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. I am looking forward to catching up in the new year.

The 2024 Ride for a Roof event has been postponed due to wet weather; however, a new date has been set for the event, being Saturday 22 March 2025.

The Common Ground Foundation Team will be contacting current ticket holders in due course regarding ticketing information.

Vice President REPORT I start this report by acknowledging Rohan Marks and his term as our President and the outstanding job he did while in that role. In saying that, I welcome Robert Daly to the role and offer him my full support.

The Grant was titled ‘Active Women and Girls’ going to three campdraft committees to hold clinics before June 2025. I thank Esk, Gold City and Below Zero committees willing to hold these important events.

With Les Hopkins taking over the Operations Manager role in a volunteering capacity, I thank him and wish him well also. I would like to thank our former Operations Manager, Gabbie Franklin, for her dedicated service to the role and wish her well into the future.

October saw the running of The Big Three campdrafts and once again well supported. I congratulate Kimberley Sammon for becoming only the third lady to win the Holy Grail of Campdrafting – winning the Warwick Gold Cup.

I would like to thank Rick Young and the Dalby Committee for running a very successful National Finals in April and look forward to working with Steven Wells and the Goondiwindi Campdraft Committee who will be running the 2025 National Finals in April 2025.

As Christmas approaches, I would like to wish our members a Happy and Holy Christmas and a wet and green New Year.

Coming from the November Management Committee Meeting, held at Dalby on 28 & 29 November, it was great to see the

Rules Sub Committee REPORT Greetings Campdrafters Firstly, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the executive for appointing myself as Head of the Rules Sub Committee earlier this year. I feel honoured and humbled to be given the opportunity to represent the Australian Campdraft Association in this field.

The Rules Sub Committee met for a teleconference on 6 November, along with Executive Members, Robert Daly and Jason Comiskey, where are large number of items were discussed. These items included rider and horse restrictions, cattle levies and prizemoney guidelines. The general feeling throughout the Sub Committee, was to suggest simplifying/relaxing some of these guidelines and/ or rules, and to help provide campdraft committees with more options when deciding on their programs due time restraints, cattle numbers and general costs. Motions were moved and carried for further discussion and approval by the Management Committee at the Dalby Meeting at the end of November.

The following rule has been breached several times this year, and complaints have been received and being considered for further action: I.3. A judge must not judge a horse that they own, train or exhibit.

This rule couldn’t be written or state the obvious any clearer. I would like to remind both competitors and judges to take note and be mindful, as it may save an awkward conversation at the bar later in the day.

Just a reminder to stallion owners, please ensure your studs, are contained within the Stallion Containment rules. In too many instances, owners are not complying. These rules can be found on the ACA Website, under the link General Information, Competition Rules and Guidelines, if you require a refresher.

The ACA Office Team have been instructed to pass on and/or redirect any Rule or Guidelines enquiries members may have, to the Sub Committee. Members include Norma Shannon, Greg Sibson, Pete Comiskey, Kay Radke, Scott Haley, Tania Moorehead, and myself. I urge and welcome, all ACA members, to contact anyone from our Sub Committee, or your local Councillor, if they require clarification, as we are only too happy to help.

Finally, I’d like to thank the Rules Sub Committee for their abilities to work together as a team, their resilience and their efforts overall. It makes our roles very enjoyable and worthwhile.

Operations Manager REPORT Hello Members and Committees This is my first report as Operations Manager having only been appointed in November. It has been a very busy month or so getting to know the ACA Office Team and preparing a new budget for the 2025 Financial Year. I have been able to spend some time in the ACA Office in Toowoomba to get to know the ACA Office Team and how the office runs.

I am looking forward to the new season ahead in 2025 and working hard to ensure that the ACA continues to be a strong association that supports its members and committees.

We have just commenced a new initiative called a Day with the ACA, which brings Secretaries and Members together for a Campdraft One training day. We recently conducted a day

at Charters Towers, Queensland, and it was very well received.

This gives Secretaries a chance to learn about Campdraft One in a non stressful environment instead of during the running of their draft. If you would like to be involved or run one of these days, please contact the Campdraft One Team.

One of my priorities in my role will be to keep our members informed of what is happening within ACA. You can review the Minutes of Management Committee Meetings via the ACA Website and we also post a lot of information on Facebook, Instagram and in the ACA News. I also encourage you to speak with your Zone Councillor if you want to discuss any matters.

Magazine Coordinator REPORT Hello Everyone, I hope that this edition of the ACA News, Edition 276, finds you well!

This magazine is the final publication for ACA’s 2024 Financial Year and looking back over the past year, I cannot help but think, “what a year it has been for the ACA News.”

Over the years the magazine itself has undergone change, from its appearance, to a more recent change, being the commencement of electronic distribution. While there has been a shift to the distribution method and how you receive your magazine, I can assure you that the content within it has not changed; it continues to provide you with a wealth of important, interesting and engaging news and information. The ACA News is the ultimate news source for Association related content, ranging from operational related content, to committee and member related content, among others.

While on the topic of the content that is found inside the pages of the ACA News magazines, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in the ACA News during the 2024 Financial Year, from our Members, Committees, Sponsors, Advertisers, ACA Management Committee Members, ACA Office Team Members, Graphic Designer, and additional Stakeholders thank you for your support and assistance, I greatly appreciate it.

Committees have the opportunity to host the ACA National Finals, an annual event that attracts many competitors and spectators located across Australia each year.

ACA provide funding to the ACA National Finals Host Committee to assist them with the National Finals. Committees also receive ACA funding for their Youth Camps, Starter Clinics and Judges Seminars.

A variety of membership types, including memberships for Mini, Junior and Juvenile competitors that do not require additional parental memberships.

Reciprocal membership rights between ACA and ASHS at sanctioned events.

Graeme Henry McKenzie ~ In memory of ~

Graeme was born in Rockhampton, Queensland on When Graeme wasn’t competing, 21 August 1938. He was the eldest son of Stuart and he was easily found at ‘Taurus’ with his cattle that he and Joan bred.

Daley’s Playrio

~

Playrio was born at Caiwarra in October 2000 into a raging drought. He was one of the last foals by our stallion, Rio’s Legend, who we lost as an eight year old. Legend was by Daleys Rio who my parents owned and had a lot of success with including winning ACA Sire of the Year three times.

Playrio had an exceptional nature which made him easy to break in, and by the time he was five year old, he was an Open horse. I rode him in the beginning and put him in Futurity drafts as a three year old then Ben placed on him in the Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge and won the ACA Rookie Horse of the Year as well. Ben and I both competed on him then, winning many Opens and Ladies and placing in many of the big drafts. He was fifteen when a bad bout of colic almost claimed his life so we retired him.

He won over $60,000 in prize money and my biggest thrill was winning the Stallion Draft on him at Paradise Lagoons in 2009. He was never worked and always lived with his mares in a paddock beside other horses, which is rare for a stallion. We’d drop him off in his paddock Sunday night on the way home from a draft and pick him up when we left again! Ben didn’t have many mares in the beginning and all mine were related to Playrio, so we never actually got a foal by him until he was seven year old. He wasn’t

overly exposed to outside mares mainly due to our location. Over the years though we made up for it and at Burke & Wills Draft this year, we had twenty on the truck by him. Eltorrio, one of his eldest progeny, won the three round Open by four points, Pledge won the Novice and Distinctly Rio, one of the youngest by him, won the Futurity with a four point margin.

His progeny have been exceptionally good to us. He’s never won the ACA Sire Progeny Award, but managed to place second numerous times.

Amongst countless Opens, Ladies, Juvenile and Junior drafts, his progeny have won the Condamine Bell twice, Canning Downs, Grandfather and Grandmother Clock, Chinchilla Restricted Open, Paradise Lagoons Graeme Acton Memorial Open and the Superbeef Open, ACA National Finals Ladies, Triple Crown Aggregate, two x Super Quest, Future Stars Futurity Series, Nutrien Gelding Incentive, ACA Rookie Horse, two ACA Novice Horse and five ACA Open Horse Awards.

ACA announced their 2025 National Finals Host Committee, Goondiwindi and District Campdraft Assoc Inc.

The ACA Annual General Meeting was held on Monday 22 April in Dalby, Queensland, prior to the start of the 2024 ACA National Finals.

As at the middle of November 2024, ACA have held three judges seminars.

ACA were excited to see their 2024 Classic Ladies Foundation Young Ambassador Quest Representative, Charlotte Ernst, represent them in the Classic Ladies Foundation Young Ambassador Quest held at the Nutrien Classic Campdraft and Sale earlier in 2024.

ACA held its first Campdraft One training day ‘A Day With ACA.’ The event was hosted by Campdraft One Lead, Emily Castrigno and Northern Zone Management Committee Members, Hugh Philp and Jenni Ievers. The event was held in Charters Towers, Queensland on Tuesday 19 November 2024.

Overview of the Management Committee Meeting With a total of twenty seven Management Committee Members in attendance, they carried a collective eighteen proxy votes between them.

The two day meeting commenced with the endorsing the new Management Committee Members, Erica Hanrahan and Cheri Stanger, representing Border Zone and Northern Territory/North West Western Austral Zone, respectively.

A minutes silence was held paying respect to Life Member Neville Evans and Pat Kelly.

Twenty three new Trial Judges were appointed to the ACA panel with eight judges elevated to Open status.

The Finance and Administration Sub Committee presented a 2025 Budget for adoption, the discounted Committee Affiliation, Casual Membership and Event Fee were all carried unanimously. No further increase to any current fees occurred.

Dates for the 2026 ACA National Finals to be held at Paradise Lagoons were announced for 15 & 18 April.

The Management Committee elected for the ACA News to remain as a digital publication. It will be accessed by all Financial Members and Committees via the Riverina Stockfeeds Live Leaderboard within their Campdraft One profile. Further discussions were had regarding the possibility of moving to a subscription based app which would have up to date articles and notices weekly, as well as a paid classifieds section and other areas of note such as Standings, Upcoming Events.

Campdraft One, Lead Emily Castringo, gave a thorough presentation of services provided by using Campdraft One and the success of the first ‘A Day with ACA’ clinic that was held on Charters Towers, Queensland in the second week of November. Committees are invited to send in proposed Expressions Of Interests for a clinic to be held in their zone before the Autumn campdraft season kicks off.

The user statements for the Casual/Event Membership launch were discussed at length by the Management Committee with details of this shown in the minutes taken.

Rule Changes The following rule changes occurred and were carried unanimously.

Rule D.4.C be changed from: Open drafts that are restricted to Open horses only shall be allowed an increase in the nomination fee to a maximum of 6% of listed cash prize money; this includes the Stock Levy for up to $1,000.

To: Open drafts that are restricted to Open horses only shall be allowed an increase in the nomination fee to a maximum of 8% of listed cash prize money.

“I betcha a beer I can get this cow between those trees and around that boulder.”

Now, I can’t be sure but I would say about 140 years ago there was a conversation along those lines going on somewhere near a little town called Tenterfield and if I was a gambler I would assume that someone lost that bet; because here we are 140 years down the track and we are still having the same conversation. A little bit fancier nowadays, no doubt. But the best part is, we are still doing it in Tenterfield.

2025 marks 140 years of the adrenaline rushing sport of campdrafting. Horsemen and women from across Australia gather every weekend to show off just how talented they really are. From the cattle picking to the farrier skills these men and women prove their love for horses, fun and precision as we watch them carve a beast from the mob, wrap it around two pegs and then straight up the middle to what they call the gate. Sounds easy right? Well it’s not. And if you come to Tenterfield Showgrounds on 3 – 4 May 2025 you will see first hand a sport that really can’t get any

more Australian. At our 140 year celebration you will see some jaw dropping horsemanship.

Come on down to our opening ceremony where we will remember the people who have helped grow this sport and make it as popular as it is today. We will honour those lost doing something they loved. And we will recognise the organisations which are the backbone of this sport. Then if you stick around for the Saturday night we will have some of the best food served up so that you can mingle with the superstars, be sure to get some autographs from these celebrities. Who knows, you might even learn something from the presentation we will put together about the history of this sport.

We look forward to seeing you and hearing from you. This is an event you have to put on your calendar!

ACA’s Champion Sire’s Progeny Competition ACA’s Champion Sire’s Progeny Competition is a prime opportunity for stallion owners to promote their sires to a nationwide audience, celebrate them and their progeny’s successes and give them the chance to win one of three awards that are presented at the ACA National Finals!

Sire Eligibility: To nominate in this competition, sires must be ACA registered. Sires must be owned by a current ACA member. Sires can be alive or deceased and if the sire is deceased, a current ACA member must have owned the sire on the date of death.

Points: Sires receive points from the points that their ACA registered progeny receive at ACA affiliated campdrafts.

Sires’ campdraft points do not contribute to this award.

Promotion: Sires are promoted on the ACA Website, where their and their progeny’s points are available for viewing on the Champion Sire’s Progeny Competition Standings Page. Sires also receive exposure in the ACA News, where their points are published on the Champion Sire’s Progeny Standings Page, as well as one of them being selected per edition to be featured in a special feature piece, which is also displayed on the Standings Page.

Awards: The Awards for this competition are presented at the end of the Competition Season at the ACA National Finals. Awards are given from first place to third place.

Nominations: Nominations for the 2024/25 Competition Season cost $47.00 (ACA’s Competition Season runs from 1 April to 31 March).

You will need to register your horse with ACA. You can complete this via your Campdraft One profile, on your horse’s profile. Once you register your horse with ACA, it’s registered with ACA for life.

2. You will need to add the sire’s name to your horse’s Campdraft One account.

After adding it to the account, you will need to click the ‘Update Details’ button, so that this information saves on the horse’s account.

After completing these two steps, any points that your horse receives at ACA affiliated campdrafts moving forward, will be added to the sire’s points in ACA’s 2024/25 Competition Season Champion Sire’s Progeny Competition.

This year’s Condamine Bell Campdraft once again highlighted the skill, tradition, and community spirit at the heart of Australian campdrafting. Held in the historic town of Condamine, Queensland, the event attracted competitors, spectators, and sponsors from all over, which created an unforgettable atmosphere, bringing the local community and the wider campdrafting network together.

Event Highlights and Top Performers The Condamine Bell is proudly known for its consistent grounds, quality cattle, and competitive prizes, drawing competitors from almost every state. This year’s Condamine Seeds and Tyres and Tara Rural Supplies Open Draft was won by Brendan Fitzgerald from Roma, riding Rosie’s Tapt.

Marking a triumphant return since his last win in 1991 with his horse Woody, Brendan’s victory this year came with a significant reward – the $75,000 winner's bonus cheque, reflecting the high stakes and elite competition that the Condamine Bell is known for.

In the Joyce Campbell Memorial Ladies Draft, Louise Comiskey showed her skill riding Savvy Dancin Cat to secure the top spot.

Meanwhile, the Teys Australia Novice Draft saw a strong performance from Michael Hayes, riding Shaydack Audi, who clinched the title with a standout run.

Introducing the Slotted Shoot Out This year, we were thrilled to introduce a brand new event – the Slotted Shoot Out. On Thursday night, the crew from GDL auctioned off slots, giving bidders the chance to either ride for themselves or to nominate another horse and rider to compete on their behalf. The auction raised an impressive $35,000, creating a jackpot prize pool that kept the stakes high and all eyes in the clubhouse on the arena.

Congratulations to all our slot holders and their nominated riders for making Friday night’s competition a nailbiter.

The prizemoney breakdown saw over $18,000 awarded to the first place winner, with second and third places earning just over $10,000 and $7,000, respectively.

First: Hugh Miles and Times Up riding for the Ben Hall Syndicate.

Second: Luke Bennett and Millungeras Moon Beam riding for Evan Acton.

Community and Support The Backbone of the Condamine Bell's Success The success of the Condamine Bell would not be possible without the tireless work of our volunteers, the generosity of local cattle donors, and the dedication of our judges who generously gave their time over the weekend. From Tuesday 15 October, another exciting week of campdrafting began, with the second jewel in the Triple Crown Series, the Chinchilla Grandfather Clock.

The stage was set with an immaculately prepared red loam arena surface and 265 competitors rolling up from around the country, to compete in the prestigious event.

As per tradition, the first event underway was the Knudsen Family Restricted Open. 218 of the best Open horse and rider combinations negotiated the Knudsen Wagyu around the course, dutifully judged by Mr Les Stewart. The evening concluded with the Competitors Dinner, courtesy of event sponsors Shell QGC, where the participants gathered amidst the ambience of live music and camp oven dinner, to come together and celebrate the beginning of the five day competition.

With the rising of the sun Wednesday morning, we were underway with the First Round of the Black Truck and Ag Chinchilla Grandfather Clock Open Campdraft, judged by Nathan Maller.

Similarly to the 2023 event, competitors in both the Open and Novice drafts needed scores of 88 to advance to the second rounds. Another exceptional week of campdrafting, scoffing statistics in the vicinity of 49% outside scores and 42% full courses leading up to the running of the finals.

On Thursday evening, it was evident the word of the annual Dog Jump event had spread around town and this year seven eager super hounds turned up to compete for the

coveted Yeti prize. Emerging victorious was local, Shaanan Coglan and her rescue Kelpie cross dog, Archie, who set a new Chinchilla record, leaping an incredible height of 2.15 metres!

The first of the finals was held on Friday afternoon with the Restricted Open being won by Will Durkin and Durkins Jewel, scoring 182 points across the two rounds. Will ran a massive 93 in the Final which sealed the deal ahead of Pete Knudsen, Mark Ruff, Mark Buttsworth, Pete O’Neill and Rohan Marks, who collectively finished equal second place on 180. A first round camp score of 24 secured the Cut Out win for Mark Buttsworth and Peps Double Rey. On Friday evening the crowd swelled around the camp as we hosted the KellCo Mates Helping Mates Auction and Saddled Cut Out Calcutta, in support of two local Chinchilla families, both facing significant health challenges.

Following on, the final round of the Saddled Cut Out commenced where the music was loud, the commentary dry, the scores high and the action low and fast. Defending their title from last year, Joe Payne and Spin Rey achieved a cumulative score of 47.5 across the two rounds, to take home the prize purse. Second and third placings were Rick Hopkins and Kimberley Sammon respectively.

On Saturday we hosted our annual Sponsors Luncheon ringside under the marquee, and watched the finals action from the bar, with live streaming directly on screen under the tent.

The RDO Equipment Maiden/Novice Horse and Rider Final was won for the second time by returning 2022 Champions, Kylie McPhee and Denmark Victor, the big bay stallion ironically being awarded a service to himself!

Louise Comiskey aboard Savvy Dancin Cat was victorious in the Glenoch Angus Chinchilla Grandmother Clock, backing up their blue ribbon performance from Condamine, after a run off with Kerry Turner and Hingis. Alana McEwan placed third with Duncans Desperado, and the Cut Out was won

The Australian Stockmans Saddlery Novice Draft, judged

by Luke McEwan, saw a total of 544 competitors scaled back to twenty nine taken into the Final.

Wandoan competitor, Cameron Webster and Clarins scored the win along with the prized saddle. Pete Comiskey came in second and Hugh Philp and Kerry Turner split third place.

Finally, it was time to decide the Black Truck & Ag Open Draft. From the thirty eight competitors who entered the final round, The Grandfather Clock was won outright by Kingaroy competitor, Mark Buttsworth and Peps Double Rey, a mere two point margin ahead of runner up, Joe Payne and Cole Black. Jason Lindley, Steve Comiskey, Will Durkin, Matt Durkin, Jackie Knudsen, Cameron Wilson, Ken Boulton, Matthew Moffat and Robert Leach rounded out the placings to tenth. The Cut Out was Stewart Wallace with Sky Cat. Cattle welfare was top of mind throughout the week, with cattle safely transported to and from the grounds, waiting in shaded pens and freely grazing on locally grown premier digit hay. The Warwick Gold Cup is known by many as the “Melbourne Cup” of campdrafting.

Campdrafting at its very essence is a display of great horsemanship. It is a unique Australian Sport. The Warwick Show and Rodeo Society together with all the competitors wish to give our heartfelt thanks to all of the Cattle Donors, for the use of their cattle, without which we would not be able to proceed. This year we used approximately 2,800 head of cattle.

We are also lucky enough each year to have amazing Sponsors on board.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers, for giving their valuable time both before, during and after the event. Without these volunteers the running of this event would be extremely difficult.

We had a fantastic week and the weather was great with the torrential rain holding off by just one day! We had an incredible display of campdrafting from contestants all over Australia.

Alongside advice from representatives from the ACA, we were able to improve our grounds and make the Warwick Arena safe and successful for all those who used it throughout the week of the event.

It takes an army to run an event of this size and the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society are thankful and appreciative for each and every person involved.

The 2024 Nebo Bushman’s Carnival Inc. (N.B.C.I.) Campdraft was a very special occasion as we celebrated the sixtieth anniversary since the foundation of N.B.C.I. Special guests included Mr and Mrs Graham Ross. Graham being the last surviving member of the original committee.

Graham cut the cake and spoke about the success of this committee and the changes over the years. The minutes of the foundation meeting were on display and it is noted that Graham Ross moved the motion that the new committee be called Nebo Bushman’s Carnival. We were delighted to have so many of the early pioneers of this association in attendance.

A special thanks to our Campdraft Chairpersons, Chris and Sherree, for the celebration cake and making time in their busy timetable for this to happen.

Looking forward to a big year for our seventy years of contribution to the Nebo Community.

This year we had the return of the Open Finalists in a grand entry followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Lacey Ward. This was well received by all.

Rodeo and Campdraft was first hosted by the local R.S.L. in 1955, with N.B.C starting in 1964. Next year we will celebrate seventy years of Rodeo and Campdraft activities in Nebo.

THE CONGRESS Campdraft

Congress Team Members have big plans for their 2025 event.

September saw an exciting new event launched in Dalby – The Congress. The Congress Team made up of performance horse enthusiasts in the Dalby area formed in July 2024 and had less than three months to bring the event to life.

The 2024 Congress consisted of a full Stockman’s Challenge program and ACA affiliated Novice, Open, Ladies, Juvenile and Junior Campdrafts. With a $20,000 prize pool on offer for the Open and a beautiful line of Herefords from Kindon Station, saw for some great drafting under the watchful eye of Judge, Luke McEwan. Rohan Marks took home the first ever Congress Open Buckle in the Open Campdraft on Turnermarks Editor. The Ladies champion buckle was won by crowd favourite and Congress Team Member, Bridey Jonas on Clancy.

The Novice Campdraft on Sunday saw Camm Agricultural cattle from local feedlot, Wonga Plains, run beautifully with Kerry Turner on Turners Stud Controller take the Novice win.

The Juvenile event saw another local, Jayme Sommerfield on Heavy Pepper take the blue ribbon, and our Junior Champion was Zane Renyard on Royal Banqut. Thanks to Judge, Luke McEwan, for officiating our kids’ events.

ESK YOUTH Camp

Participants ready to kick off the weekend.

The Esk Campdraft Association’s 2024 Youth Camp was another success. Thank you to the committee who continue to nurture and grow this event, whether on a horse or on the ground. The parents and guardians who nominate their young campdrafters to participate, who roll up their sleeves and lend a hand to the committee. The participants, we are proud to be a part of their journey to safe and competitive campdrafting.

Our incredibly talented instructors have once again smashed it out of the park teaching the young generation of drafters.

Karen Butters not only spends so much time in the saddle helping our young drafters, but also guides and pushes the committee to strive to continually improve our program.

Craig Sheppard has such a vast knowledge of skills, in which our young drafters are so lucky to have shared with them.

Kristy Taylor joined our team this year, passing on valuable knowledge of working horses with the mechanical cow.

This year Mark Sherlock introduced the participants to reading and working cattle on the ground. This was new to our program and there were lots of light bulb moments.

Mark has been helping us realise our dreams since the beginning of our youth program.

Thank you to Kay Radke, this year we changed it up a little with our ACA rules, it was great to see the young drafters jump in and show us that drafting is in safe hands with their knowledge and understanding of the rules and guidelines of campdrafting.

Luke McEwan is always extremely supportive and encouraging of our youth riders to reach their full potential.

The time he takes to work with each rider individually is not unnoticed.

We would like to give an extra thanks to Tony Jensen of TJ Saddlery who brought his tools and showed the kids how to stamp their very own leather nosebands, this was a huge hit.

All participants also received halters kindly made by Fiona Williams of Avale Creations.

Sharon Warner shared her roping skills, and we appreciate the time and patience for helping out on our challenge course.

The cattle this year were donated by Grant Ward, Brodie Hurley, Josh Hurley and Toni Webster. It is a challenge finding suitable cattle, so we were very fortunate to have over 120 head.

Thank you to HLE Smith for transporting the cattle and also Kyle Sanguinetti and Grant Ward whose generosity always goes above and beyond.

Paul and Steph Laycock of High Country are always appreciated through the use of their tractor at not only this event but our campdraft weekend also.

INTRODUCING ACA’S 2025 CLF YAQ REPRESENTATIVE,

The Australian Campdraft Association’s (ACA) Administration Lead, Kelly Duncan, recently interviewed Jayme Farr, who will be flying the ACA flag as the Association’s Representative in the 2025 Classic Ladies Foundation (CLF) Young Ambassador Quest (YAQ) at the Nutrien Classic Campdraft and Sale in Tamworth, New South Wales, in early 2025. Read the interview below!

Can you please tell me a little bit about yourself? Hey! I’m Jayme, I’m an apprentice Electrician and in my spare time, I’m breaking in, and training our horses as well as some client horses. I have a huge passion for working with young horses, there’s satisfaction in seeing your hard work pay off. I’m grateful to my Dad and my family who have put in the work to have some great bloodlines available to me, some of which have been in the family since 1950’s and I look forward to continue our breeding program. I recently purchased a two year old colt by Conduit from Royce and Emma Hanrahan, Select The Duke. After starting him, I have no hesitation to say I am in love and excited for his future!

What do you love most about campdrafting? Campdrafting is a family sport. Always has been, always will be, it’s a community. I love that the most about campdrafting.

Congratulations on being selected as ACA’s Representative for the 2025 CLF Young Ambassador Quest. How did you feel when you were heard this news? I was having lunch when I got the call and nearly choked in disbelief. Once it set in that I had been selected I was just so grateful and excited to be given this opportunity.

Why did you wish to nominate for this position? I’m always trying to look at how to give back. I think the Classic Ladies Foundation are incredible at raising awareness and funds for good causes and I knew I had to be a part of it! This is my chance.

What are you most looking forward to when representing ACA in the Quest? I’m most looking forward to having the honour of bearing the ACA flag. I hope to inspire other young girls to enter the quest for years to come. I’m also looking forward to the opportunity of meeting new people and hearing their experiences while showing them what the ACA has to offer the industry.

Where to from here? Head down, bum up working. Hopefully enjoying the rain over the Christmas break. We still have a couple foals to be born yet, and I have about four two year olds to break in and three yearlings to handle so busy busy busy. And of course selling raffle tickets for CLF and getting things organised for Tamworth!

Welcoming Incoming Secretary/

Operations Manager, Les Hopkins Les Hopkins comes to the position of Secretary/Operations Manager for the Australian Campdraft Association in a volunteer capacity. First elected to the Management Committee in April 2024, Les was appointed to the Finance & Administration Sub Committee in September this year.

Raised on a cattle and sheep station at Moonie in Western Queensland, Les served thirty three years in the Queensland Police Force throughout the State, before his retirement in 2012. Having risen to the position of Chief Superintendent with QPS, Les has extensive experience in organisational management, skills which will transfer effortlessly in his role with ACA. With three children and six grandchildren, Les and Virginia are enjoying retirement on their property at Alton Downs, near Rockhampton. They keep themselves busy breeding horses, campdrafting and as an avid golfer, Les can often be found on the fairways, taking a round of golf.

The event will see the four associations; ACA, Australian Bushman’s Campdraft & Rodeo Association (ABCRA), Gippsland Campdrafting Association (GCA) and Southern Campdraft Association (SCA) compete against one another.

CENTRE STAGE ON THE ACA STANDINGS As we enter the last month of ACA’s 2024 Financial Year, it’s clear that the competition across the Association’s twelve competition titles for the 2024/25 Competition Season are heating up – continue reading to find out who’s in the top three of these competitions!

BEN HALL IS FIRST IN LINE FOR THE BLUE RIBBON IN THE ARIAT COMPETITION The only thing that has changed to Ben Hall’s placing in the Ariat Champion Open Rider Competition since the last segment of Centre Stage on the ACA Standings is the number of points beside his name. Ben continues to be the frontrunner of the competition, but he now has 1872.72 points. The competition’s second place still belongs to Steve Comiskey; however, over the past couple of months he has received additional points, which now sees him with 1334.69 points to his name. Pete Comiskey continues to stand in third place and he now has 1221.56 points.

KATIE CLIMBS UP THE RIVERINA STOCKFEEDS COMPETITION LEADERBOARD Bill Matton’s Katie has gained 101 points since the last ACA News magazine and this has seen her move from seventh place to third place in the Riverina Stockfeeds Champion Open Horse Competition, with 278.4 points to her name. The competition’s lead continues to belong to Chris Hall’s Chisums Cash, now with 399.25 points. Like last edition, Christopher Ware’s One Knight Stand, stands in second place; however, he now has 253.3 points to his name.

EDITION 277 SEES NEW FACES TO THE SECOND AND THIRD PLACES IN THE MONTANA SILVERSMITHS COMPETITION Since last edition of the ACA News, Ben Fogg and Mac Knudsen have moved up the Montana Silversmiths Champion Novice Rider Competition Leaderboard, to now stand in second place and third place. Ben, who was previously in seventh place, now obtains second place with 183 points and Mac, who was in fourth place, is now placing third with 182.5 points. Madison Hall continues to hold the first place position with 285.07 points to her name.

MINIMAL MOVEMENT TO THE TOP THREE LEADERS IN THE TROXEL COMPETITION While the top three leaders in the Troxel Champion Juvenile Rider Competition remain the same as last edition, the number of points that they have, does not. The competition’s frontrunner, Lucy Harrison now has 89.5 points, Jack Black, who obtains second place, now has 66.5 points and the third placegetter Riley Ellrott, now has 58 points.

SODA BLUE EXOTIC CLAIMS THE FIRST PLACE POSITION IN THE ONE MOORE DADDY COMPETITION Gaining 96.5 points over the past couple of months has seen Bryony Puddicombe’s Soda Blue Exotic take the top spot in the One Moore Daddy Champion Rookie Horse Competition. Shifting from third place to first place, Soda Blue Exotic now has 157.83 points to his name. Another horse who has leapt up this competition’s leaderboard is Kate Southern’s Arlee Flotus, who has gone from fifth place to third place, now with 80.5 points. Like last edition, Jason Comiskey’s Teekah stands in second place; however, she now has 152.32 points.

KERRY TURNER JOINS THE TOP THEE LEADERBOARD IN THE CHAMPION LADY RIDER COMPETITION Kerry Turner was not in the top twenty of the Teles One Moore Champion Lady Rider Competition last edition; however, that has all changed this edition, as Kerry is currently standing in third place with 47 points to her name. Leeanne Comiskey is placing third with 45 points, and Kate Southern continues to lead the competition, now with 66 points.

ANOTHER TOP THREE PLACING FOR SODA BLUE EXOTIC So far in this segment of Centre Stage we’ve spoken about how Byrony Puddicombe’s Soda Blue Exotic has moved to the first place position in the One Moore Daddy Champion Rookie Horse Competition and while doing this, he has also jumped up the Royalish Champion Novice Horse Competition Leaderboard. Gaining 96.5 points over the past couple of months, to now have 206.83 points, has seen her move from seventeenth place to her current second place position. Bryony Puddicombe has another top three leader in this competition, being Bungarby Elegant Spin. Since last edition, Bungarby Elegant Spin has also moved up the competition’s leaderboard, shifting from third place to first place, now with 220.5 points.

Another horse who has leapt up the competition’s leaderboard is Steve Comiskey’s Lyra Park Delt Me N Acre, who has gone from fourth place to third place and he now has 199 points to his name.

ALEXANDRA HINDLE ENTERS THE TOP THREE LEADERBOARD OF THE JONO BATTLE EQUINE SERVICES CHAMPION MAIDEN RIDER COMPETITION This edition of the ACA News has seen Alexandra Hindle join the top three Leaderboard of the Jono Battle Equine Services Champion Maiden Rider Competition. Alexandra is placing second with 92 points to her name. Marie Sutton is standing in third place with 88 points, and Chloe Southern continues to hold the first place position, now with 133 points.

ROHAN MARKS MOVES FROM TENTH PLACE TO THIRD PLACE IN THE MASTER RIDER COMPETITION Adding 139 points to his name over the past couple of months has seen Rohan Marks move from tenth place to third place in the Champion Master Rider Competition. Rohan now has 302.99 points to his name. The competition’s first placegetter and second placegetter remain the same as last edition, with Wayne Bean holding the lead, now with 457.5 points, and Rick Hopkins standing in second place, now with 328.16 points.

KATE SOUTHERN AND KIMBERLEY SAMMON ENTER THE TOP THREE LEADERBOARD OF THE OPEN LADY RIDER COMPETITION Kate Southern and Kimberley Sammon have both gained many points since the last segment of Centre Stage and this has seen them move up the Champion Open Lady Rider Competition Leaderboard. Kate, who was previously in sixth place, has received 160.5 points and she now stands in second place with 415.5 points. After receiving 184.69 points over the past couple of months, Kimberley, who held the eighth place position last edition, now obtains the third place position with 412.51 points. The competition continues to be led by Jaye Hall, who now has 608.07 points.

NEW STALLION TO SIRE PROGENY COMPETITION STANDINGS This segment of Centre Stage has seen a new stallion join the Champion Sire Progeny Competition standings, that sire being Robert Leach’s, Hazelwood Congressman.

Hazelwood Congressman is standing in fifth place with 247.5 points to his name. The competition’s top three leaders resemble last edition; however, each sire has gained more points since then. Terry Hall’s Hazelwood Conman now has 3979.06 points, Jaye Hall’s Daley’s Playrio now has 1942.87 points and Kim Lansdowne’s RS Chisum now has 996.41 points.

ACA have two competition titles available for sponsorship – the Champion Master Rider Competition and the Champion Kate Southern has gained 160.5 points over the past couple of months and this has seen Sire’s Progeny Competition. What will she be doing over the Christmas holidays? She’s having a good spell in Victoria at Mark and Shelly Ruff’s.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for Flutter for the remainder of the 2024/25 Competition Season? She probably won’t go to another draft til the end of winter, we’ll have cutting horses in now until the Futurity in June.

Cotonvale Lady Pierre is placing fourth in the One Moore Daddy Champion Rookie Horse Competition What has been your favourite campdrafting achievement with Cotonvale Lady Pierre from 2024 so far? We have owned Lady since Dalby in December last year and her first start was in April. In May she won her first Novice draft at Gatton.

What will she be doing over the Christmas holidays? Lady is finishing at Dalby Stock Horse Sale Campdraft and then shoes/rugs off and will be out spelling until February/March next year.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for Cotonvale Lady Pierre for the remainder of the 2024/25 Competition Season? More ribbons are always welcome. Being such a quiet mare, I’d love to see our kids ride/compete on her.

What do you like most about Christmas? Catching up with family and friends that we don’t always get to spend a lot of time with and of course all of the ‘special’ food that comes with Christmas festivities!

Baylee is placing eighteenth in the Nutrien Equine Champion Associate Rider Competition What has been your favourite campdrafting achievement from 2024 so far? I haven’t achieved anything major drafting for 2024. But have had a lot of success competing in the Stockmans Challenges. Staying consistent and finaling most weekends would have to be my favourite part for 2024.

What do you like most about Christmas? Playing backyard cricket Christmas day with my dad, mum and my four sisters.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for the remainder of the 2024/25 Competition Season? My goal for the rest of the season is to keep my horses cool, soft and consistent… hoping that it all comes together somewhere.

Tessa is placing twelfth in the Champion Maiden Rider Competition What has been your favourite campdrafting achievement from 2024 so far? My favourite campdrafting achievement was definitely a hard one to choose from but my most memorable moment would have to be Camboon Campdraft. I placed second in the Ladies after having to run it off twice. I also placed second in the Open with three consistent full round scores. Two ribbons in one weekend, surely made me smile!

What do you like most about Christmas? Christmas for me is always spending time with my family. There is always a game of cards like Euchre or Phase 10. It gets very competitive in the Charles household.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for the remainder of the 2024/25 Competition Season? My goal would be to pick em like my Dad! Or a 90.

SDP Scott David is placing equal fifth in the Royalish Champion Novice Horse Competition What has been your favourite campdrafting achievement with Scotty from 2024 so far? Definitely him winning the Warwick Gold Cup! It was an absolute dream come true.

What will he be doing over the Christmas holidays? He is very busy in the breeding barn so I don’t think he is complaining... but he will also get a special Christmas day treat with some licorice - he also quite likes popcorn we have found!

What is one of your campdrafting goals for Scotty for the remainder of the 2024/25 Competition Season? To enjoy him. He really doesn’t have anything left to prove so we just want to enjoy drafting him ourselves. We are hoping that his next big event might be the Willinga Gold Buckle Campdraft if we can get him there.

Jackie is placing eleventh in the Champion Open Lady Rider Competition What has been your favourite campdrafting achievement from 2024 so far? My favourite achievement this year so far would probably be getting a place in the Grandfather Clock and the Canning Downs… It is always a confidence boost to be able to mix it with the calibre of competitors that go to The Big Three.

What do you like most about Christmas? My favourite thing about Christmas would have to be spending time with the whole family and sharing in the kids’ excitement of Christmas Day. What is one of your campdrafting goals for the remainder of the 2024/25 Competition Season? We have a couple of homebred horses that I am looking forward to starting early next year.

What has been your favourite campdrafting achievement with Congressman from 2024 so far? We didn’t go to many drafts this year, but were excited to get third, and highest placed stock horse, in the Champion of Champions at Warwick. We also picked up fourth in the Open at Junadah Plains.

What will he be doing over the Christmas holidays? After helping Santa at the North Pole, Congressman will be enjoying the rest of the breeding season and getting ready for the Nutrien Classic.

Where is Congressman standing this breeding season? Hagon’s Equine in Tamworth.
