President REPORT

Hello and welcome to Edition 274 of the ACA News

Congratulations are in order for our two most recent inductees to the Australian Campdraft Association Roll Of Honour: Dan Condon and Paul McKey.

Dan was presented with his Roll Of Honour award by Western Zone Management Committee Member, Ben Hall, at Greenvale Campdraft in May. The award recognises the enormous contributions made by Dan to the sport of campdrafting. Dan, along with his capable team, coordinate the cattle for two of the biggest campdrafts in Northern Queensland – Bowen River and Greenvale, each year. Dan has a reputation for spending 90% of his weekend at these events in the backyards, personally ensuring the quality of the cattle used at the events. Dan was nominated for the award by Central Zone Management Committee Member, Mac Shann.

Paul was presented with his Roll Of Honour award by President, Rohan Marks and Vice President, Peter Petty, at Killarney Campdraft in May. Paul has a long and valuable history on

the ACA Management Committee, retiring at the last Annual General Meeting in 2024. He has been a significant contributor to the Rules Sub Committee, taking a candid and sincere approach to the consideration of rule changes throughout the years. Based in Northern New South Wales, Paul has actively advocated for, and represented, ACA in his local area. Paul was nominated for the award by Vice President, Peter Petty.

Congratulations to both Dan and Paul, and thank you from the campdrafting community.

Vice President REPORT

I write this Vice President Report from a very wintery Tenterfield. I would like to report on the recently held Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the National Campdraft Council of Australia (NCCA), kindly hosted by the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association at the Anchorage, Port Stevens, New South Wales.

This meeting was well attended with all Organisations represented. The ACA delegates being Sean Dillan, Vice President; myself; Robert Daley, Vice President; and Paul McKey, who stood in for our President, Rohan Marks, who was unable to attend.

Some of the many topics we covered at the NCCA meeting included transferring our organisation from an Incorporation to a Company Limited by Guarantee. We also covered the NCCA Disciplinary By-Laws, Champion Rider Event, Judges Online training and Unaffiliated Campdrafts and Organisations.

We received a presentation from Adam Castle, Sports Integrity Australia, informing us of the latest developments within the National Integrity Framework (NIF), confirming specific wording used in the NIF Policies and the NCCA’s acceptance of the updated NIF Policies relating to young people attending Campdrafts.

Ben Rossiter, via Zoom, updated us on the Judges Online training, which was very informative. The NCCA Disciplinary ByLaws were presented and accepted unanimously.

Sean Dillon raised in general business the ACA’s concerns, brought forward by Councillor Ben Hall at the Dalby Management Committee Meeting in April, 2024, relating to nomination scratchings that committees are having to deal with. All Organisations seem to be dealing with the same problem and the cost of the transportation of cattle not being used at campdrafts. We all agreed that we need to work on a better system to deal with those competitors that repeatedly cause this issue.

All in all, we had a very good meeting, with harmonious discussions and lively debate. We all gathered and contributed for the betterment of our sport of Campdrafting.

On 25 May, 2024, at the Killarney Campdraft, President Rohan Marks and myself took much pleasure in being able to welcome another ACA member onto the Roll of Honour. Mr Paul McKey was presented with his plaque, much to his surprise, in front of all his family and many friends. Paul’s longevity on the ACA Council, his many years on various sub committees as Campdraft Facilitator and travelling all over New South Wales and Queensland judging at many campdrafts. Thank you, Paul and Well Done!

Plans are well underway for the 140 years celebrations of Campdrafting in Australia in 2025. These celebrations will be held at the Tenterfield Show Campdraft on 3 & 4 May 2025. This weekend will include the unveiling of the new plaque which will acknowledge our event; the feature CW Smith Open Campdraft; informal sit down dinner on the Saturday evening; presentations and speeches. This weekend will also be a chance to catch up on 140 years of memories and stories.

I would like to wish you all safe Campdrafting until we meet again.

ACA Roll Of Honour Induction With Paul McKey

Paul McKey has been heavily involved in ACA over the years and his involvement was recognised at this year’s Killarney Campdraft, where he was inducted onto the Association’s Roll Of Honour. The recently retired ACA Management Committee Member of the Eastern New South Wales Zone, received his award on the Saturday evening of the campdraft, receiving it from Rohan Marks and Peter Petty. In addition to being a long term Management Committee Member, Paul has also been heavily involved in ACA’s Rules Sub Committee, where over the years, he has obtained the roles of Chairperson and Member. ACA thank Paul for his contributions to the Association and the sport of campdrafting and congratulate him on receiving his Roll Of Honour award. The ACA News recently had the opportunity to interview Paul and it is included below.

Can you please tell me about your childhood and where you grew up? I grew up in Woodenbong where I still live, my family was large. I was number ten of fifteen children, we played a lot of football, and were involved in swimming trials and carnivals. We were always kept busy, one of the jobs was milking cows in the town common before school. My father worked in the timber industry, so after school and on weekends we had to stack timber, and have a job somewhere to earn our own pocket money.

What does a day in your life look like? I get up at 3.30am to start work by 4.00am, we have a manufacturing business where we make jockey boots, jockey saddles, whips, girths, breastplates, saddle cloths etcetera. My son, Glen, works for us and starts at 4.00am as well, working till lunchtime as he is also a horse breaker and usually has a dozen horses in work at a time. We also have three small beef properties that we operate, and most nights I finish work about 7pm.

How did you become involved in campdrafting? I started doing odd jobs for a local property owner after school and on weekends. He bred Stock Horses as well as breaking them in. He got me to start doing ground work on them, I remember I was working on three after school and he was going to come back from another property to ride them, it was getting late so I thought it can't be that hard so I gave them their first ride, I had only ridden a few times before that and that's when I got hooked and he took me to a few drafts.

What has been one of your most memorable campdrafting moments over the years? I'd say winning an Open on a horse that my son, Glen, bred, broke in and educated himself when he was fourteen, he lent the horse to me to take to a few drafts. Another memorable occasion was judging the Condamine Bell in 2019, that felt pretty good and also my youngest son, Shaun, was the runner up in the ACA Juvenile Rider two years in a row riding only these two horses that we bred, broke in and educated, Ebony and Rustler.

You were a Management Committee Councillor for many years and have recently retired from this role. Can you please tell me about the first Management Committee Meeting that you attended? I remember it well. It was at a Chinchilla Grandfather Clock Draft, we had the meeting in a little building on the grounds the day before the draft started, it was a bit daunting at first, as I was not known to most of the councillors and Mrs McIntyre made us lovely sandwiches.

What areas of ACA have you been involved in over the years as a Management Committee Councillor? I was always on the Rules Sub Committee, I completed a term as the Chairperson of the Rules Sub Committee. Rules are important for whatever sport you play, I can't believe the number of competitors who don't know the rules.

Looking back on your time as Management Committee Councillor, what have been the most rewarding parts of this role? I would say seeing the National Campdraft Council of Australia (NCCA) formed as when we would attend drafts you didn't know what rules the judge was going to use.

Paul McKey recieving his Roll Of Honour award at the 2024 Killarney Campdraft with Rohan Marks and Peter Petty. Photography by Jess Jurd.

You were inducted onto ACA’s Roll Of Honour at the 2024 Killarney Campdraft – congratulations. How did you feel when you received this award? I was very surprised and felt very honoured and to have Peter Petty and Rohan Marks present me with the award, it made it feel more special, as we travelled to meetings together. It was actually Peter who got me involved in council, we have been good mates most of our lives. Having all my family there was great as well, they know what I had to put up with at campdrafts, some competitors think it's the place to bag the Association, and being a Councillor, I would always be a target.

The Management Committee voted unanimously to appoint you to the ACA Roll Of Honour – how do you feel about this kind of recognition from your peers? I feel really good, that my fellow Councillors felt my contribution was worthy of it, they are a great lot of people, I have made many lifelong friends from being part of the Association.

The Roll Of Honour award recognises significant contributions to the sport of campdrafting. What would you suggest are the most powerful ways at the moment, that people can contribute to our sport? Get on and help a committee, open and shut a gate or do something to help out, campdrafts don't just happen, in my opinion, the people that whinge the most usually do the least.

Where do you see ACA headed into the future? Like all businesses, they experience challenging times, like trying to balance the books with ever increasing costs. Until you are on the inside of an organisation, it's easy to criticise, keyboard cowards on social media don't help any and usually don't get the facts right. The ACA has always protected its members from additional costs like camping fees etcetera at drafts, but some don't consider this when membership costs increase.

What do you enjoy most about the sport of campdrafting? Most of the time I only compete on horses that I breed, educating them and getting them competitive is what I like to achieve and the good people that you meet and socialise with at the bar and watching my family compete.

Is there anyone that you would like to thank? I would like to thank my family, my wife Marian, who would do all my emails, when I chaired the Rules Sub Committee there was more computer work to do (I don't use computers all I know about them is that they plug into a powerpoint). My sons, Glen and Shaun, would help keep things going at home when I was away at meetings.

Where to from here? Keep campdrafting whilst I'm fit enough, I had two artificial hips put in about five years ago so I just hope they hold up so I can. Spending as much time with my grandchildren as possible, I have three at present, and continuing to breed Hereford cattle.

The application from Paradise Lagoons Campdraft Association to host the 2026 ACA National Finals Campdraft was endorsed by the Management Committee Meeting. Moved by Dane Bateman and Seconded by Simon Knight.

ACA were successful in obtaining a grant from the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport (Sport and Recreation), which will be used to facilitate a campdraft clinics for women and girls in each ACA Zone in 2025, for Committees to host.

During the trial, feedback will be collated and presented to the Management Committee for review. The benefits of an electronic publication are many to members and stakeholders alike. This style of publication can be viewed on your phone, tablet or any electronic device, opening the ACA News up immediately to a wider audience such as our Junior and Juvenile members who may have been at boarding school, when previous versions arrived at home in the mail. Once it is received to members email inbox, the ACA News can be downloaded and viewed at any time

with the touch of a button. The electronic publication of ACA News will provide real time feedback to members, advertisers and stakeholders in that data will be able to be collected relating to page views, giving greater indication of audience engagement. Another benefit of an electronic publication allows the Magazine Coordinator to produce a magazine with unlimited pages and therefore opens up the opportunity for more committee event articles to be published and to broaden the scope to other newsworthy articles which previously may not have been added due to page limits with the hard copy. The motion was carried unanimously, Moved by Annie Williamson and Seconded by Les Hopkins.

Discussions were held in relation to membership structure and the option of reviewing it before the November Meeting in preparation for the 2025 Budget. It was decided that a meeting will be held at Condamine, Queensland, on Wednesday 9 October for Management Committee Members to bring forward proposals relating to membership structure and committee affiliation.

Rohan Marks resigned from the Office of President, Sean Dillon thanked him for his leadership and service, this was echoed by Peter Petty. Robert Daly was voted in as President and Jason Comiskey was voted in as Vice President.

National Campdraft Council of Australia Annual General Meeting

The National Campdraft Council of Australia (NCCA) recently held its Annual General Meeting, kindly hosted by the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association (ABCRA) at the picturesque Port Stephens near Newcastle, New South Wales. Delegates from the four member organisations (Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association, Australian Campdraft Association, Gippsland Campdrafting Association and Southern Campdrafting Association) travelled from far and wide to congregate and discuss various matters relating to Campdrafting across Australia.

The meeting was packed with topics and motions including rule reviews, the NCCA’s impending transfer to Company limited by Guarantee, updating National Integrity Framework (NIF) Policies, Tenterfield's upcoming celebration of 140 years since the first campdraft, the NCCA Champion Rider Event, Potential Judges Training Online and the NCCA Disciplinary By-Law.

The NCCA welcomed Guest Speakers, Mr Ben Rossiter who has assisted the Council on the Judges Online Training platform, Mr Adam Castle from Sports Integrity Australia (SIA) who spoke about the updated NIF Policies and the role that the SIA has in Australian Sport and Mr Mark Burnell from the Australian Horse Industry Council (AHIC), of which the NCCA is a Member, who reiterated the important work that the AHIC do and the various governance matters that they are currently working on.

As the Executives’ first year has flown by, Ron and myself would like to thank all the delegates and their respective administrative staff. The tireless work that you all do to promote the safe enjoyment of our unique Australian Sport for all of its stakeholders is commendable and a wonderful example to the future generation to follow.

TERREQUIP TANNYMOREL Campdraft

The Tannymorel Campdraft Committee were excited to present their annual campdraft on 12 – 14 April 2024. Our team have worked tirelessly over the last twelve months to create a new cut out yard and backyard setup, and we were thrilled to see our competitors enjoy the results of our vision and hard work.

We were blessed with perfect weather and great company resulting in a well supported weekend of fun and campdrafting.

For the first time, we started on Friday afternoon with the Supafloats WC Bellingham Memorial Open Campdraft under the watchful eye of our Judge, Rohan Marks, with the winner being Ben Hill riding Jewel.

Saturday morning commenced with our Budget Steel Jim Keogh Memorial Maiden Draft. Thanks to our Judge, Craig Sheppard, with the winner being Emma McKey riding Kimlin Django. Our Junior Juvenile competitors were next, and it was great to see that the future of campdrafting is in safe hands. After some great runs, the winner of the Roche Contracting Group Junior Draft was Keely Gilbert riding Maggie, with a score of 86, and the winner of the Kay’s Contracting & Cartage Juvenile Draft was Abbie-Jane Lord riding Big Boss with a score of 88.

Saturday afternoon was for fun and games, and saw some fierce competition in the Lawler Rural Contracting Sporting Games,

Courtney Mulcahy. Photography by Renee Mulcahy Photography.
Betty Mulcahy and Matilda Brand. Photography by Rachel Bryun.

and the judging of our hotly contested dress up competition. It was a fantastic afternoon for competitors and spectators alike.

On Sunday we started with the Taylor Farrier Service Maurice Browne Memorial Novice Draft. Thanks to our Judge, Jacob Brown, and congratulations to long time supporter Andrew Peterson riding Anson Mel B who was our winner. For the first time in several years, we also saw the return of our Encouragement Draft, kindly sponsored by Mountain Made Tiny Homes. After a run off, the winner was Cooper Lewis riding Alice.

Tannymorel is a small community. Many of our committee members, cattle donors and sponsors are not involved in campdrafting, but are happy just to support a local event. It is largely thanks to our amazing community that our event can run, for which the committee are very grateful. Shout out to all the great locals and local businesses who chipped in,

helped out and supported our campdraft, and especially our cattle donors, who are the unsung heroes of any campdraft. We thank our competitors for being great sports, and our team of volunteers who chipped in to create a fun and relaxed atmosphere. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Tannymorel again next year!

DARDANUP Campdraft

13 & 14 April 2024 saw Dardanup Campdraft Club run its annual Campdraft. This year the rain stayed away, even though we were all wishing it would rain as we have been experiencing one of the driest summers in 146 years. Local farmers have been reducing their cattle numbers, just to help them get through this dry spell. Saying that, what cattle we were able to find from our ever reliable cattle donors were in great drafting condition to the point, people thought they would make an onion taste great.

Under the watchful of eye of Vicki Evans from Nabiac in New South Wales judging the open age events and Steve McKinven from Albany Western Australia judging the youth events, we got underway with the Novice event sponsored by Monark Transport and Jones Welding Solutions. This event was won by Charlie Staite riding Ten Gallon Cat. Bonnie Reimers went home with the Top Cut Out (TCO) prize riding Deadwood Evie, thanks to Dunnings’s Fuel Supplies for this event.

Following this we headed into the Peninsula Downs Junior Draft with all the kids having plenty of energy to burn after watching mums and dads ride in the Novice. Luke Daley from Albany took out first place on his pony called Cuddles and his brother Austin Daley taking home the TCO prize riding Nugget.

Next up was the Core West Insurance Brokers Juvenile event. Shannon and Tahnee had a blast attending their first campdraft, and were there to present the trophy to winner Ethan Ralston riding Ima Snazzy Diva. TCO went to Matilda Patten on Full Metal Jacket.

After a small lunch break, we went into two full rounds of the Kaydale Restricted Open Horse. Guy Bennie riding Spy managed to combine two great outside scores to take out first place. Chris Towne on Townes Serenity took home the TCO prize sponsored by Peter Harris from Zephyr Real Estate.

Prior to our campdraft weekend, we got news from one of our life members that their granddaughter had just been diagnosed with Sandhoff disease. This disease comes with no treatment and no cure. So, we put the word out to our campdrafting community over the weekend to raise funds for little Morgan Bashall and her family to make many happy memories. Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed, your kindness knows no boundaries and we raised just over $6000.

With all of our emotions tucked away from Saturday, the sun came up again on Sunday, with the Wonky Donkey making the best toasties ever tasted and the coffee van with a cue a mile long, we got under way with our Junior and Juvenile events.

Matilda Pattern and Full Metal Jacket.

LS Rural Enterprises supported our Junior event which was won by Maddison Laverty riding Billy and TCO went to MJ also on her second horse, Junior. Mardathuna Pastoral Station sponsored the Juvenile event again this year. Matilda Patten managed to combine the TCO and a great outside score to take out first place in both, riding her horse, Son of an Acre.

Brampdon Park joined forces with 540 Mechanical to sponsor our Maiden event. Our Club Vice President, Tim Prosser took out the honours of first place on his family bred mare, Taunton Vale Rose. He also won the TCO on the same mare.

Final event for the day was the Restricted Open sponsored by the magnificent winery, Domaine Naturaliste and South West Pilot Services. Jim Laverty is no stranger to the podium and took home first place riding Lealukas Jimmy. TCO sponsored by Horseland Bunbury and the beautiful rug went to Darci Nancarrow riding El Zara Chisum.

Our wonderful Western Australia Campdraft Photographer, Anne Lasini from Rustic Pics who captures and sees more than you think, decided she would award one of her fabulous prints to the most outstanding volunteer for this season in our south west region.

This went to the ever humble Freya Kerr. If you are ever looking for her, she is in the backyard with the cows loving life.

With all the winners out of the way, the biggest thanks goes to our volunteers, cattle donors, cattle cartage, sponsors, our great club that just make everything work. We are so lucky to have a great team supporting our campdraft sport.

TENTERFIELD SHOWCampdraft

The 2024 Tenterfield Show Campdraft, held at the showground in May, was another great success. The days' schedules included an Open, Maiden, Novice, Ladies, Junior and Juvenile events, held over two days. There were many competitors, including generations of families which proves again the strength of this popular family sport.

There were competitors from South East Queensland, Southern New South Wales and surrounding areas. Although our nominations weren’t large, the weekend allowed relaxation muchly appreciated by the competitors.

The Committee organised a formal meal on Saturday night underneath the grandstand, which was well received by one and all. Many of those that attended would never have had a meal in this way and it was an opportunity to catch up with each other and relax. With the day finishing early on the Sunday, after the completion of the Novice and Final, plenty of competitors where heading home late morning which was much appreciated.

A special shout out to all our volunteers, cattle donors, judges and committee members who all worked over this weekend to make it such a success.

The Committee are beginning to plan the next Tenterfield Campdraft, which will be held on Saturday 3 & Sunday 4 May 2025.

We know for sure that this great horse sport was made in Australia and we also know that it was first staged at the Tenterfield Show in 1885. We will be commemorating 140 years of Campdrafting in 2025, when we will continue to celebrate the life and times of those who have and continue to contribute to the evolution of the great family tradition of Campdrafting.

We are pleased to be able to celebrate this well established family tradition and for Tenterfield to show pride in what we do while commemorating 140 years of Campdrafting in 2025.

GLENMORGAN SNAKE GULLY CUP Campdraft

Originally scheduled to take place in April 2024, the Glenmorgan Campdraft Grounds were transformed into a wading pool after a beautiful amount of rain in the days leading up to the event. Postponed but penciled in for 17 – 19 May, the weather forecast still looked ominous. The committee was lucky enough to be blessed with a small shower in the lead up to the weekend which topped off the arena preparation and made for a stellar arena surface for competitors, horses and cattle alike. This year saw Major Sponsor, Willinga Park, come on board again, with many returning sponsors and new sponsors lining up to support our annual event yet again in 2024.

Friday saw the commencement of the Clonlara Cattle Open Campdraft, supported with a superb line of cattle donated by Jen and Gus McCormack and family. The Open event, which consists of three rounds across two days, was highly contested, with only five points separating first to sixth. Under the watchful eye of Curtis Cherry, Robert Plant aboard Condet marked a total of 268 to claim the 2024 Glenmorgan Snake Gully Cup Open. The highest cut out was achieved by Bryan Lyons and Planet with 23 points.

The North West Plumbing Maiden A, under the watchful eye of Justin Vivers, was also run and won on Friday, seeing competitors offered a stella line of cattle donated by Willinga Park. The competition was tight, requiring a run off between Jonathon Sylvester and Melissa Gilbert, but in the end, Melissa and Chewy came out on top. Mick Southern and President achieved the highest cut out, producing a stellar yard of 23 points.

Saturday morning saw the running of the Homestead Agribusiness Maiden B. Under the watchful eye of Cameron Wilson, competitors had access to a fabulous line of cattle donated by the Warby Family of Billinbah Pastoral. The fabulous line of cattle, saw competitors producing some high scoring runs, with the Final being hotly contested and eventually leading to a run off. The run off saw

Guy Wormwell victorious aboard Lilly, with a total of 259 points. Jay Pearce and Solar Crawford were able to clinch the victory for highest cut out with a 23.

The Junior event, sponsored by Uniq Sol, saw our youngest of competitors battle it out on yet another stellar line of cattle donated by Jen and Gus McCormack of Clonlara Cattle. Under the watchful eye of Stephen Sheppard, Lachlan Johnstone and Metallic Lynx were successful in their quest for the blue ribbon, putting a huge 87 points on the board and also securing the Cut Out with a 24, the highest cut out across the weekend.

The Elders Meandarra Juvenile event saw a strong cohort of competitors showing their horsemanship skills to Judge, Stephen Sheppard, with cattle also donated by Clonlara Cattle. Lucy Harrison managed to clinch the win on her mare Pepper, followed closely by Charlotte Mailler and Yulebacreek Dot on an 82. Toby Kirkwood, of Glenmorgan, was crowned the winner of the Cut Out, marking a 23 aboard Joe.

Saturday afternoon saw the running of the highly anticipated Restricted Open Jackpot Shoot Out. With thirty four starters, riders knew they needed to be on top of their game, with the consistently superior line of cattle donated by Clonlara Cattle making this

possible. Competitors and their mounts certainly produced their best performances, with a mere two points separating first to seventh. The successful horse and rider mount though, was John Mulcahy and Stratton Gest a Charlotte, securing the win with 91 points, followed closely by Nathan Maller and Seeds Silver Lining. The highest cut out was won by Nathan Maller and Erin Reyl Class with a 23.

Sunday morning saw the continuation of the O’Toole Transport

Novice A, with competitors showcasing their skills under the watchful eye of Reade Radel and a superb line of cattle donated by Sam and Pippa Phelps of Let’s Go Cattle Co. The small margin of points separating first to sixth place supports the high quality line of cattle, with Justin Vivers and Cupid securing the win with 178 points. The winner of the highest cut out was awarded to Stephen Sheppard on Allcannons Lawson with a 23 point effort.

The final event of the weekend was the Meandarra Transport

Novice B. Kerriet Pastoral Co. donated a fantastic line of cattle for competitors producing another event where the smallest of margins separated first to sixth. Under the watchful eye of Nathan Maller, the eventual winner was Jack Fairbairn on Gilview Romantic, scoring a total of 179 points, followed closely by John Mulcahy on board Stratton Jill. Stephen Sheppard managed to secure another highest cut out award, producing a 23 point yard on Elle.

The Glenmorgan Snake Gully Cup Campdraft 2024 saw such superb lines of cattle across the weekend that many of our cut outs saw several competitors on equal highest scores. We want to thank our cattle donors for their ongoing support each year by providing these superb animals that make our sport possible.

A further thank you goes out to all of our new and returning sponsors, and all of the volunteers leading up to and across the weekend. As a new executive committee, formed in late 2023, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to our predecessors and those that supported and assisted the running of the 2024 Glenmorgan Snake Gully Cup Campdraft. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2025.

Thankyou.

AUSTRALIAN STOCKMAN’S HALL OF FAME Campdraft

On the last weekend in June, the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame (ASHOF) Campdraft Committee ran its second event, attracting nominations from far and wide. There was little time to relax for most competitors with two rings running over the three days. When things got too tight to manage, Secretary, Charli Curr, was always happy to adjust the runs.

Cattle Donors, Peter and Jane Hughes, were on hand to run the backyards all weekend with ringers from ‘Tierawoomba’, ‘Keeroongooloo’ and ‘Caldervale'. The 2000 wagyu steers required for the event exceeded all expectations with thirty four percent full courses over the three days. These cattle were enroute from ‘Lake Nash’ in the Northern Territory to ‘Tumbar’, Jericho and ‘Caldervale', Tambo.

Matthew Moffat had a very successful weekend on his Maiden horses winning the Curley Cattle Transport Maiden A on Future Dreams with a 178 and the Paradigm Foods Maiden B, after a run off with Deb O’Brien, riding Snapchat on 267. Luke Dines and Cider on an 87 were the winner of the Northern Livestock and Property Maiden 4 Maiden.

The Rural Property and Livestock Novice A was won by Kurt Hanrahan and Christmas Cat on a 178 while the Ray White Longreach and Barcaldine Novice B was won by Joshua Phelps riding Miniman on a 260, after a run off with Deb O’Brien and Neirbo Nicolette.

Georgie Williamson secured the win on Blinhampark Jokers Destiny with a 178 in the Western Meat Exporters Ladies after a run off with Madison Hall riding Somerset Bushranger.

Saturday afternoon spectators gathered on The Hill to watch the final of the $30 000 JBS Open. With two points separating him from the other competitors, Pete Comiskey and Roy took out the win with 267 points.

After a three way run off, the Georgina Pastoral Company Restricted Open champion was Ben Hall riding Chisums Cash, second was Pete Comiskey and Roy and third was Ben Hall and Halls Cosmo.

The Ringers From The Top End Juvenile was won by Indy Black and Rey Two on 89 points. The Little Spurs & Co Junior was won by Kodie-Anne Comiskey riding Boonara Trustee on an 89 and the Central West Rural Mini was won after a run off with Lucy Kehl, by Leila Comiskey riding on Bungarby Chance on a 118.

To the Judges, Mick Maloney, Jack Gallagher, Bruce McNaughton, Philip Curr and Beau Frame, you did an outstanding job, thank you.

With limited infrastructure in place, there was much work to do in the lead up to this event. The ASHOF Committee would like to thank Lloyd Mills from the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, and the local businesses for all their support. Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School catered all weekend and it was delicious!

It was also great to see so many of the valued sponsors of this event over the weekend. Events like this couldn’t happen without you and it is very much appreciated. Thank you for supporting the ASHOF Draft!

Welcome Campdraft One Specialist, Giaan Smith!

The ACA Office Team has recently welcomed a new team member to the team, Giaan Smith, who has commenced the role of Campdraft One Specialist. Find out more about Giaan below.

Giaan joined ACA in the Campdraft One Team in July 2024. She is a qualified vet nurse and riding for the disabled coach and an experienced administration and project assistant. Giaan has experience in startups, not for profits and corporate workplaces. When not at work you can find her hanging out with her horse, tinkering with her dirt bike, or out at rodeos, races or, funny enough… campdrafts.

“I’m a complete data nerd so in this role I am looking forward to getting into the nitty gritty of scores, points and registrations; however, I am also looking forward to getting out and about in the campdraft community and a delivering the top level service and assistance ACA is known for.”

Welcome ACA Youth Reporter, Cheyenne Gscheidle!

The Australian Campdraft Association is excited to welcome their new Youth Reporter to the ACA Team, Cheyenne Gscheidle. The ACA News have recently had the opportunity to interview Cheyenne and it is included below.

How old are you? I am currently fifteen years of age turning sixteen.

What are your hobbies? I have a few hobbies I am currently interested in. I have a passion for sewing so I do this in my spare time. However, my major hobby is competing horses in campdrafting and barrel racing.

Can you please tell me about the first campdraft you competed in? My first ever campdraft I competed at was Weetalabah Campdraft back in 2013. I was four years old at the time.

What is your favourite campdrafting memory? My favourite campdrafting memory would be at Clermont Pony Club Campdraft in 2021. This campdraft is where I won my first Junior Draft along with my first full course which made this memory special.

Who is your favourite horse to compete at campdrafts and why? I have had the opportunity to compete on a few different horses over the past few years. However, my favourite horse to compete on at campdrafts is Tim Tam. He is a five year old chestnut Quarter Horse gelding. I started competing on him after he broke futurity status and I have been drafting and training him ever since. He is my favourite horse to compete on as we are both learning and improving from each other, and things are starting to pay off. As we face difficulties from time to time, I feel this is what makes you a better rider and person long term.

What do you enjoy most about campdrafting? Personally, going to a campdraft is exciting both from a social and competitive perspective. I enjoy having the opportunity to compete on my own horses. Along with watching and learning from inspirational people, both inside and outside the arena. I also enjoy catching up with friends and meeting new people. This is what makes the sport of campdrafting so great to be a part of.

Why did you wish to become ACA Youth Reporter? I wanted to become ACA Youth Reporter as I wanted to challenge myself and get outside my comfort zone. As well as learn and experience new things to broaden my horizon. As I have an interest in writing and online designing, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity.

How did you feel when you found out that you had received an ACA Youth Reporter position? I felt excited and honoured that I had been given the opportunity as ACA Youth Reporter as this position will help me grow as a person and give back to our wonderful campdraft communities.

What are you most looking forward to in your role as ACA Youth Reporter? I am looking forward to being an approachable person to everybody during my role. Along with reporting a variety of all aspects among the campdrafting community. I look forward to meeting new people and embracing their stories.

Where to from here? From here I will keep competing at campdrafts and interview people from different aspects of the campdrafting society. I endeavour to do my best to produce, quality informative and effective articles during my role as ACA Youth Reporter. As well as have fun and have a few laughs along the way.

My photography journey started back in 2009 (give or take) while I was contract mustering in the Queensland Gulf Country. I had a little point and shoot camera that I would take around in my UHF holder since you never knew when a Kodak moment might come along. When I look back on those photos now, the quality is certainly not great but the quality of the memories they bring back is second to none. Mustering, yard work and camp life photos then led on to trying my hand at campdraft photography when we attended events. I’ve been drafting since I was seven, so was fortunate to have enough experience watching enough great runs that I knew in my head what I wanted my photos to look like: up on the shoulder, head down, mouth shut, horses head not being pulled away from the cow etcetera. Once again, looking back at them, the quality isn’t fabulous due to the equipment I was trying to use but the timing and shot selection still stands up for the most part.

"I

had a little point and shoot camera that I would take around in my UHF holder since you never knew when a Kodak moment might come along."

I kept on practicing in this way for the next few years until I was the lucky recipient of the 2012 Edgar Hudgins Memorial Scholarship that granted me the opportunity to spend three months in the United States billeting with various Brahman breeders. I splashed out on a better camera before heading overseas and bought a Nikon D3100 with a couple of kit lenses as an entry into the world of DSLR’s. While I was staying in Hungerford, Texas, Rachel Cutrer and Joelynn Rathmann from Ranch House Designs held a livestock photography workshop which was an absolute blessing as it meant I was able to learn how to use my camera in manual mode from the beginning and get some wonderful tuition in setting up livestock from a couple of masters.

Once I returned home, I kept practicing and thankfully with the help of our wonderful community of campdraft photographers (Jodie Humble, Shelley Henry and Cherie Reeves in particular) I was able to improve my technical skills and upgrade my equipment to where I am at today. I get quite a few messages from other photographers asking advice on equipment, settings etcetera, and always extend the offer for them to come and sit with me at a draft and ask

me anything they want and to get feedback on their images as this process helped me enormously (I haven’t had anyone take me up on this yet, but the door is always open!). I am a member of a wide variety of photography groups on Facebook where I can go to get advice or discuss techniques but most of them were United States based and none of them had a great deal of experienced campdraft photographers in them. I decided I may as well start a Campdraft Photography group for people to ask questions, get technical or equipment advice, feedback on their images and to discuss what to look for in a campdraft image and (most importantly) what NOT to display!

For me an ideal campdraft shot has the horse and beast close up beside each other with the horse looking willing, loose reins, mouth shut, head down and a nice moment in the stride (weight not all on one front leg etcetera). I like to position myself at the top of the first or second peg depending on access and which side has the sun hitting the arena at that moment. I also prefer to get down low as I think it isolates the subject better from the background and makes the image more powerful. All images are cropped to make the competitor the focus of the image and so they don’t get lost in the background, and I pay particular attention to make sure my horizons are straight when editing since I can’t hold my camera level to save myself!

Shot selection is every photographer’s best friend and THE most important part of campdraft photography. Only 1/4 to 1/3 of the photos I take at an event will make it to the editing process. If you are out of contact with your cow, it’s an awkward stride, eyes rolling, gaping mouths, heads pulled away from the cow, changing sides etcetera the photos get culled. They aren’t photogenic, no one wants to buy those shots and they add no value to the rider, the horse, the event or the sport as a whole so, in my mind, there is no reason whatsoever to keep them. Only keeping the best of the best will elevate your work and the portrayal of our sport. I cannot emphasise enough how important this aspect is for the sake of social license, cattle donors, sponsors and the profile of campdrafting with the general public. If you are newer to the sport and are unsure if your shots pass muster, please ask an experienced competitor to sit with you and go through your images from an event and get their feedback on what to look for. Or better yet, come and join us at Campdraft Photography!

While my business has expanded to include weddings, commercial and family work, campdraft photography remains my all time favourite. Growing up there were next to no photographers taking any campdraft photos in North Queensland at all, let alone good ones, so we have very few photos of our old horses competing. I get an absolute buzz when I know I have just nailed a shot where the horse and rider are dominating their beast and everyone is in sync. And that is what keeps me sitting there through the hot days with the kids hanging off me and juggling my own runs!

Committee Comments –

Campdraft One

Secretary Cristina Jones from Costello Yard Campdraft Association used Campdraft One at Costello Yards Campdraft, held 7-9 June 2024.

When asked about her experience with the program, she had this to say:

“Well, it was amazing, to be honest Everything was so easy; the program was very simple. The post affiliation pack was delayed because of our post, but if I had any questions, it was there in the secretary user guide.

Everything was so simple I just can't stress that enough. It was amazing. And the staff were amazing to deal with

Everything was good, which is a nice, nice experience.

There were a lot of horse and rider changes, but they were easy to do and I usually have three laptops there, but I only had one this year, and still everything was easy. ”

ARIAT CHAMPION OPEN RIDER COMPETITION

Get to know Stuart Frame

Stuart is placing twelfth in the Ariat Champion Open Rider Competition

What do you like most about campdrafting? I enjoy campdrafting as you get to catch up with a lot of friends and see how your horses go against some of the best around.

What has been your favourite campdrafting moment so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season? Favorite moment has probably been split between winning the Restricted Open at Moura and also watching Vicki win her first draft at Baralaba.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for the 2024/25 Competition Season? I had a goal at the start of the year to break two of my Maiden horses’ statuses and got that done so will keep building on it.

ONE MORE DADDY CHAMPION ROOKIE HORSE COMPETITION

Get to know Twomile Pluckaduck with Peter Green

Twomile Pluckaduck is placing seventeenth in the One Moore Daddy Champion Rookie Horse Competition What do you like most about Twomile Pluckaduck? I like her personality, full of quirks and a bit of a goose (mind the pun) but she’s tough as nails and so natural on cattle. Everything feels easy on her. A credit to her sire, Duck N Down. What has been your favourite campdrafting moment with her so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season?   Making the third round of the Open at her first draft was cool, but running her first 90 at Glenmorgan, that felt pretty good. Would’ve felt better if the jockey didn’t bungle the final and slip a few places but that’s campdrafting! What is one of your campdrafting goals for Twomile Pluckaduck for the 2024/25 Competition Season? At this stage, the Bell and the Clock are on the cards come spring time, and I’d love to put a couple around in a row at the right time for a ribbon. We don’t go to enough drafts to be competitive Nationally, but hopefully we can have a good crack at the blue ribbon in the Southern Zone Rookie Horse Competition too.

TELES ONE MOORE CHAMPION LADY RIDER COMPETITION

Get to know Anna Hoy

Anna is placing equal fourteenth in the Teles One Moore Champion Lady Rider Competition

What do you like most about campdrafting? It allows our family to get away for a weekend which is important to us. It also has given me an opportunity to do something for myself. Being a mum of three young boys as well as building a business we get consumed and tend to forget to fill our own cup, campdrafting has allowed me to do this.

What has been your favourite campdrafting moment so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season? Would definitely be making the lineup in the Ladies Final at Paradise this year. What is one of your campdrafting goals for the 2024/25 Competition Season? Continue to better myself, be consistent and go out and have some fun. 1 Leeanne Comiskey

Get to know Olivia Rasheed

Olivia is placing equal fourteenth in the Nutrien Equine Champion Associate Rider Competition

What do you like most about campdrafting? I love the community and getting to ride and work on my horses. What has been your favourite campdrafting moment so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season? My favourite part of the season so far has been competing and placing on homebred horses, Bonaparte’s Stock Horses. What is one of your campdrafting goals for the 2024/25 Competition Season? One of my goals for this season is just to get my horses and myself going consistently.

Get to know Bungarby Elegant Spin with Bryony Puddicombe

Bungarby Elegant Spin is placing third in the Royalish Champion Novice Horse Competition

What do you like most about Bungarby Elegant Spin? He’s a real character, or a big kid, I thought he’d make an excellent kid’s horse because he loves playing games.

What has been your favourite campdrafting moment with him so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season?  He’s really stepped up another couple of notches this year. He has really matured to have a lot of speed and competition toughness.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for Bungarby Elegant Spin for the 2024/25 Competition Season? For him to keep kicking goals.

CHAMPION MAIDEN RIDER COMPETITION

Get to know Marie Sutton

Marie is placing sixth in the Champion Maiden Rider Competition

What do you like most about campdrafting? The atmosphere is tops, the horsemanship needed and the unknown variable of the beast.

What has been your favorite campdrafting moment so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season? That’s a hard one.  Having an average of 76.13 for eight runs at the Glenmorgan Snake Gully Cup Draft. Or the cheering, watching Nikki Hoffmann run a 91 to win the Ladies at Campdraft 4 Cure. Nikki’s comeback to drafting after having ten years off with study, career and baby duties. What is one of your campdrafting goals for the 2024/25 Competition Season? Keep my horses running calm and remaining consistent with my results. Plenty of drafting!

What do you like most about campdrafting? I think it’s a friendly sport that all the family can be involved in.

What has been your favourite campdrafting moment so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season? I have enjoyed seeing our daughter Emmi-Lou getting keen to compete in Mini drafts.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for the 2024/25 Competition Season? Setting up my young horses for years to come.

CHAMPION SIRE’S PROGENY COMPETITION

Get to know KS Omaha with Ian and Donna Atthow

KS Omaha is placing sixth in the Champion Sire’s Progeny Competition

What do you like most about Omaha? Omaha has great confirmation, this attributing to him still being sound and fertile at almost twenty six years of age.

What do you like most about Omaha’s progeny? They are good horses to ride mustering and like Omaha, have been successful in many different disciplines with riders of all ages.

What Omaha progeny are you most looking forward to competing on this 2024/25 Competition Season? Sevenangle Shamrock, she is the youngest sibling of a successful mare line, full sister to multiple winning campdrafters Mahrocco, Maria and Horatio.

ACA’s Champion Sire’s Progeny Competition

ACA’s Champion Sire’s Progeny Competition is a prime opportunity for stallion owners to promote their sires to a nationwide audience, celebrate them and their progeny’s successes and give them the chance to win one of three awards that are presented at the ACA National Finals!

Sire Eligibility: To nominate in this competition, sires must be ACA registered. Sires must be owned by a current ACA member. Sires can be alive or deceased and if the sire is deceased, a current ACA member must have owned the sire on the date of death.

Points: Sires receive points from the points that their ACA registered progeny receive at ACA affiliated campdrafts. Sires’ campdraft points do not contribute to this award.

Promotion: Sires are promoted on the ACA Website, where their and their progeny’s points are available for viewing on the Champion Sire’s Progeny Competition Standings Page. Sires also receive exposure in the ACA News, where their points are published on the Champion Sire’s Progeny Standings Page, as well as one of them being selected per edition to be featured in a special feature piece, which is also displayed on the Standings Page.

Awards: The Awards for this competition are presented at the end of the Competition Season at the ACA National Finals. Awards are given from first place to third place.

Nominations: Nominations for this competition cost $47.00 per Competition Season (ACA’s Competition Season runs from 1 April to 31 March).

Nomination Form: The Champion Sire’s Progeny Competition Nomination Form can be found on the ACA Website via the via the link below:

https://www.campdraft.com.au/forms-2/

For more information about the Champion Sire’s Progeny Competition, contact the ACA Office Team on 07 4622 3110 or aca@campdraft.com.au
