The Australian Campdraft Association are excited to announce that the 2025 ACA National Finals will be hosted by the Goondiwindi and District Campdraft Association and that the event will be held at Goondiwindi, Queensland, in April 2025.

More information will be shared in the coming months.

Charles William Gleeson, who would later become known as ‘Bill’ and ‘Wid’, was born at ‘North Hampton’, Blackall, on 30 April 1932.

Wid was involved with horses from a young age, and he won the first campdraft that he competed in, being the Juvenile Campdraft, at Emerald in 1947, aboard BlueBeau.

Wid drew ‘Beaufort’ in a ballot in 1956, and a few years later, in 1960, the first ARRA rodeo and campdraft was held on the property. A second event was run the following year. Both events were successful, and it was because of this that the Gleeson family and their friends, decided to build a campdrafting complex in Alpha.

Wid’s involvement in the sport of campdrafting continued throughout the years, and he was one of the Foundation Members of the Australian Campdraft Association (ACA), which was formed on 26 February 1972. On this day, at the meeting, which was held at the Emerald Star Hotel, in Emerald, Wid was elected as a Councillor on the ACA Council, and he was assigned as an Approved Judge on the ACA Judges Panel.

Wid’s involvement in the Alpha Rodeo and Campdraft Association and ACA over the years, were deservingly recognised, as he was awarded Life Membership of the Alpha Rodeo and Campdraft Association and he was inducted onto the Roll Of Honour of ACA.

Wid died at ninety two years of age, at the Barcaldine Hospital, on Monday 20 May 2024. A graveside service was held in honour of Wid’s life at the Alpha Cemetery on Monday 27 May 2024. Our thoughts are with Wid’s family during this time.

Rest In Peace Wid.

Outgoing Vice President and Management Committee Member, Stephen Sheppard Farewelling

Stephen Sheppard has been a highly valued member of ACA’s Management Committee over the past ten years. During his time on the Management Committee, Stephen has been a Vice President, a Southern Zone Management Committee Member and a member of various sub committees. Stephen completed his role as Vice President and Management Committee Member at the 2024 Dalby National Finals. ACA thank Stephen for his service to ACA and farewell him in his roles on the Management Committee.

A Note from Stephen Sheppard

“I have been involved in campdrafting for many years, and I really enjoy the family orientated social side of campdrafting and the fact that all levels of competitors have the opportunity to compete on a level playing field.

I became involved in, or competed in, campdrafting in the very early 1980s. Our father always had pretty handy horses and we had some good horses to get started. Along with being a competitor, throughout the years I have also been involved in the Roma, Eumamurrin and Mitchell campdraft committees. I joined the ACA Management Committee in 2014 and started the role as Management Committee Member for Southern Zone. A couple of years later, in 2016, I became Vice President, and I held this position for eight years.

I have really enjoyed my time on the Management Committee, being involved with a group of people who volunteer their time to do this attracts positive and passionate individuals who have the best interests of campdrafting at heart. The Management Committee have a unique and difficult job when it comes to making decisions that affect competitors from every corner of the country, all skill levels

and various levels of involvement. I would like to think that the decisions made are for the betterment of campdrafting and benefit the majority of members. I would encourage anybody interested to join the Management Committee or attend meetings if they can.

I think the future of the ACA is bright. With the level of thought and consideration given to the decision making process and the positive outlook of the individuals involved, I think the Association will continue to prosper.

I think Campdraft One has been a great investment for the ACA. The more committees that use it, the better it will be. The full potential of the program will take some time to be fulfilled, but I believe it is earning potential through advertising and an accurate member and horse database will pay dividends for the ACA and its members.

I would like to thank all past and present Management Committee Members who have given their time and effort to the ACA. The proud history we have and the culture of sportsmanship and comradery within the sport, is something my family and I will enjoy for a long time.”

Welcoming

Incoming Vice President, Robert Daly

Robert Daly is the newest member to join the ACA Executive, commencing his position of Vice President, at the 2024 ACA National Finals, in Dalby. Robert joined the Management Committee, as a Southern Zone Management Committee Member, in April 2023. He is currently a member of the Finance and Administration Sub Committee and the National Finals Sub Committee, and he is the Chairperson of ACA’s newest sub committee, the Real Estate Investment Sub Committee. ACA thank Robert for his involvement in campdrafting and ACA, and welcome him as he commences his new role as Vice President.

A Note from Robert Daly

“Hello

Members and Committees

First of all, I would like to thank the members who took the time to vote in the election for Vice President. The reason I became an ACA Councillor and nominated for the Vice President role was to be able to contribute to the development of the sport and support the people who have given me so much.

In my role as a new Vice President, I hope to be able to address the issues that are most important to the membership. From competing as a Juvenile until present day, I have seen a lot of changes to our sport, many of these changes have been controversial and caused division in the Association. I would ask the members to not only focus on these controversies, but to reflect on the many achievements of the ACA over the years.

It seems to me that there is a perception that the ACA management is out of touch and does not listen to the membership; however, I can assure you that is not my position. I would encourage all members to be more active in steering their sport and the ACA in the direction that is best for the sport and the members.

There is no one solution to our problems that will suit every member’s needs. Our membership is large and varied. Many factors contribute to the needs of different members. A few of

these are age, geographical location, lifestyle, occupation, and personal preferences.

I would ask all members who are passionate about issues facing the ACA, to approach their Management Committee representative or the Executive to discuss their concerns and points of view.

If this does not satisfy your concerns and you wish to pursue the matter further, I would ask that you would support me as your representative by doing the following:

• Put forward a written submission supporting your complaint, or case or views whatever the situation may be.

• Along with a solution that you regard would be the best outcome for the members and the Association.

• Gather support from your fellow members and request they add their names and weight to your submission.

Once this is completed, your representative can take the necessary steps to get your submission on the next meeting agenda, to be debated and discussed fully at a meeting where you are welcome to attend and participate.

I look forward to working with you.

Yours in Campdrafting”

Outgoing Patron, Ed McCormack

After holding the position of ACA Patron for eleven years, Ed McCormack, finished in this role at the 2024 Annual General Meeting in Dalby. Ed has been heavily involved in campdrafting and ACA over the years, and among these years, Ed spent five of them as ACA President, from 1989 to 1994. ACA thank Ed for his contributions and support to the Association and farewell him from his position as Patron.

A Note from Ed McCormack

“Having just retired as Patron of the ACA for the last eleven years, I have been asked to pen a few reflective lines.

My early horse years involved polocrosse and rodeo pick up work and it wasn’t until the early 1970s that I started drafting, and competed in my first National Finals in 1976 at Taroom. Drafting over the years took me as far as Fitzroy Crossing in Western Australia, Darwin and Victoria – and all points in between. In the process I had a lot of fun and managed to win twenty five Open campdrafts.

I always enjoyed judging and have been fortunate to judge at many major events from the Kimberley to Warwick, Paradise Lagoons, ACA and ABCRA Finals and a host of great regional events. In the process, I met a lot of wonderful people, many of whom are friends to this day – when you have horses and cattle, Australia is a very small place.

I was privileged to have been the third ACA President after Ashley McKay and Graham Core, and took over a very solid organisation in the mid 1980s. After I handed over the presidency to Cameron McIntyre I took over as the second President of the fledgling National Campdraft Council of Australia (NCCA) for approximately three years. We were successful in pulling

the various associations together and achieving agreement on some common rules nationwide. This was no mean feat!

I retired from competition in 2012 and shortly after was honoured to be invited to be the third ACA Patron, following in the footsteps of the illustrious RM Williams and the legendary Charlie Flohr. It is not a particularly onerous job but gave me an excuse to turn up at various campdrafts where people would often say ‘what are you doing here?’. The definition of ‘Patron’ is ‘one who gives support’, and I have been very happy to contribute.

The Association and the sport have obviously grown exponentially, and the demands of modern competitors and the digital age pose everchanging challenges. The current state of play means that the ACA is facing one of its greatest tests. The makeup of Council over the years has had a good balance of committee members, cattle donors and competitors. It is to be hoped that this balance is reflected in decisions that look after the grassroots competitors and committees at the heart of this great sport.

Thanks for having me, campdrafting has been a big part of my life – it was a great ride.”

Welcoming

Incoming Patron, Terry Donohue

ACA welcomed Terry Donohue into the position of the Association’s Patron at the 2024 ACA National Finals in Dalby. Terry is the Managing Director of Ariat and Just Country, and he has been a great supporter of ACA for over twenty five years. The Association are grateful for the sponsorship of their Gold Sponsors, Ariat and Just Country – Ariat who has been a Sponsor for twenty five years and Just Country, who has been a Sponsor for six years. In addition to this, ACA appreciate their relationships with Terry and the Ariat and Just Country teams. ACA thank Terry for his support towards ACA and welcome him as he commences his new role as Patron.

A Note from Terry Donohue

“G’day Members of the ACA

What an honour it is to be sitting here writing my first newsletter note as your newly appointed ACA Patron. Before I go any further, I need to express an enormous thank you to the previous Patron, Ed McCormack. His service and support of the sport of Campdrafting and more so to the ACA over the years, makes me extremely proud to be in his presence and to call him a friend. I feel honoured to be stepping into Ed’s boots.

My involvement with the sport started more than twenty five years ago when a young and dashing gentleman by the name of Noel Chiconi (former ACA President) came into my parents’ western retail store that I was managing for them in Townsville. He asked if I would consider sponsoring the ACA Hughenden Campdraft Finals and attend with a display of product. I agreed and attended the Finals, and thus embarked on my long journey with the ACA and the incredible sport of Campdrafting. At the Hughenden Finals, I was introduced to many new members and was absolutely spoilt with hospitality by the committee and Jo-Anne Chiconi. Noel, Jo and the Chiconi family have gone on to be lifelong friends.

With the conclusion of the Hughenden Finals, Noel Chiconi, Cameron McIntyre and Peter McHugh worked their magic and soon after, Ariat became an ongoing sponsor of the ACA. Over the many years of my involvement with the ACA, I am honoured to have met so many members, committee members and presidents and I feel so proud that I regard them all as mates. I appreciate the amazing kinship that is so embedded within the sport of Campdrafting.

My time with ACA has allowed me to truly respect the skill, stock knowledge, and horsemanship required to be competitive in the sport. There is nothing better than watching everyone having a great run and putting one through the gate, from a true

professional to the kids giving it a go! Looking at that smile and that sense of achievement from the competitors makes for a great spectacle in my opinion. Everyone within the sport is so welcoming and, of course I always appreciate an entertaining yarn and a beer at the bar, or someone’s camp in the afternoon.

As a Managing Director of Just Country and Ariat, it provides me the opportunity to attend many corporate functions and events around the country. While at these events I am often seeking many opportunities that will benefit the ACA through the connections I make with professionals and dignitaries. I have also introduced several new leads for the ACA over the years to past and present ACA Presidents. This will be just one of my roles as Patron, while also encompassing any business planning advice required. It will be exceptional to get around to a few more drafts and get the chance to meet more members as well as supporting the Executive Committee on any matters that need assistance.

Lastly, I believe the future of the ACA is onward and upward. While the ACA is first and foremost a sporting body, it is also a business and thus, all businesses in their lifetimes will experience seasons of growth and times of challenges. We are facing challenges as an organisation at the moment, but please rest assured that your President and Executive Committee are all very knowledgeable folk, always keeping in mind the best interests for the ACA as well as the riders, family, committees, volunteers and members in this community. Knowledge and governance are key to the success of the ACA and these values are at the core of the organisation through its professional and humble actions. The ACA will continue to be the leader in the sport of Campdrafting for the foreseeable future and as your Patron, I will be working with you all to make sure of that.

Safe travels everyone, and I look forward to seeing you around the drafts.

Regards”

This Series is for horses 4 years of age and under competing in Futurity Campdrafts

The Future Stars Futurity Series is an independent committee working alongside the NCCA and their Member Associations being ACA, SCA, GCA and ABCRA, as well as the ASCA who incorporate the rules and guidelines of the NCCA when Campdrafts events are run. Our core purpose is to facilitate a futurity horse competition where the welfare of the young horse is our priority.

Rules:

• This Series is for horses 4 years of age and under competing in Futurity Campdrafts that must be affiliated with one of the following Campdraft Associations; ACA, SCA, GCA, NCCA, ABCRA or ASCA.

• There are no fees or registration requirements.

• The Series runs from 1 August to 31 July the following year, called the ‘competition year’.

• The horse is considered to be 5 years old and therefore excluded from this Series on its actual birthday.

• If the horse is started in an open age event this will eliminate them from this Series.

• Open age events are explained in depth on the next page.

• A horse can gain points only from their first six (6) Futurity Campdraft starts that the eligible horse competes in that competition year, regardless of the committee’s chosen affiliation.

• Campdraft Central Association (CCA) Futurity Campdrafts will be included in the horses first six starts.

• You do not nominate your six starts. We strictly monitor the horses first six starts.

• A horse can compete in consecutive competition years as long as that horse remains age eligible and does not start in any open age competition.

• At the end of the competition year, all horses that are eligible for the next competition year start on a clean slate basis for venues and points, but again only gain points from their first six starts in that competition year

• The Futurity horse can gain Future Stars points at ‘un-restricted’ Futurity Campdrafts, as long as the horse does not compete in an open age event.

• We encourage committees to explicitly outline the condition of their Futurity Campdraft on their program, i.e. For horses 4 years of age and under that

have not been started and does not start in any open age events.

• If a horse and rider combination is competing and places in a Futurity Campdraft affiliated with the ACA, SCA, GCA, NCCA or ABCRA then they automatically qualify to gain points in the Future Stars Futurity Series, as long as:

• The committee hosting that Futurity Campdraft utilises an appropriate electronic nomination and scoring program e.g., CampdraftOne, Campdraft Central, Campdraft Coordinator or iCompete.

• The horse is 4 years of age or younger, and has not been started in any open age events.

• The Futurity Campdraft is not affiliated with the CCA. In cases where the committee is CCA affiliated, that Futurity event will contribute to your horses first six starts, however you will not gain points in the Future Stars Futurity Series.

Open Aged Events

• Our committee will adopt the rules and guidelines of the NCCA regarding the status of a horse and event with the exception of Sale Incentive Campdrafts whereby our committee adopts the same eligibility criteria of the ACA and its Rookie Horse competition.

• The ACA regards Sale Incentive Campdrafts as NOT being open age events, and therefore those horses are eligible for the Rookie Horse Series. The Future Stars Futurity Series Committee regards this to be the case too, where Sale Incentive Campdrafts are NOT open age events as these are age restricted events.

• To further explain this, an open age event is a campdraft such as an Open, Restricted Open, Maiden, Novice, Ladies and Stallion.

• An open age event is NOT a Sale Incentive event, Juvenile, Junior, Old Buffers, Teams Draft, Encouragement, schools or training days.

• The winner of the Future Stars Futurity Series will not break status.

Finals Rules:

• At the end of the competition year being 31 July, the Top 20 horses are invited to the Future Stars Futurity Series Finals, run at a host committee campdraft forming a part of their program.

• There are two full rounds at the Series Finals, with each horse starting in both rounds regardless of their first round score.

• This is an aggregate competition, where points from the first and second round will be added to the points gained from the competition year

• The points awarded at the finals are explained below. Where competitors tie in the round, the points for the places will be added and split equally between tying competitors as per ACA points and prizemoney rulings.

• There will be no run offs for first place in either of the rounds.

• The only instance where a run off will take place is if there is a tie for first place in the overall series.

• The rider at the finals must have competed on the horse at least once throughout the horses first six starts in their competition year. However, if there are extenuating circumstances the Future Stars Futurity Series committee will decide upon the ruling in that particular circumstance.

• All finals points will be allocated to the 20 finalists in order of their placing, except in the case of a whip in the yard. If a competitors run results in a no score in the cut out yard, then that competitor will receive no points for that round.

Please Note

Unfortunately the Campdraft Central Association (CCA) is not a Member Association of, and does not incorporate the rules of the National Campdraft Council of Australia (NCCA).

Therefore, you are very welcome to start your futurity horse in a CCA Futurity Campdraft however:

• You will not gain Future Stars points.

• But, that CCA Futurity Campdraft will contribute to your horses first six starts

This is why we have ALL Futurity Campdrafts listed on our calendar of events, not just those of NCCA Member Associations (GCA, SCA, ACA and ABCRA). We are still tracking horses that start at CCA events so that we can add to your horses starts. You will not be eliminated from the Future Stars Series if you compete at a CCA Futurity Campdraft.

Can you please tell me a little bit about Lyra Park Delt Me N Acre? Delt is by the great sire, Acres Destiny and out of a well performed mare called, Lyra Park Delta, her and Steve had a great connection together in achieving their goals. Steve and Delta won the Warwick Gold Cup in 2009, won the Warwick Champion of Champions in 2014, won the Warwick Barnes Trophy two years in a row in 2014 and 2015, and also amongst many other Open Drafts, including the Acton Super Beef in 2016 at Paradise Lagoons.

What was his first campdraft win? Delt won the Novice Draft at Paradise in 2023!

How have you seen him improve throughout the 2023/2024 Competition Season? He continues to excel every time he has a run and enjoys doing his job, and claimed another win at Dingo last weekend, the Keith Charles Memorial Novice Draft, which is pretty speciaI to win to our family.

Congratulations on Lyra Park Delt Me N Acre’s win of the One Moore Daddy Champion Rookie Horse Competition for the 2023/24 Competition Season. What does it mean to you to win this award? Thanks, Delt is very pretty special to our family, as it would be to anyone that breeds a horse you train and campaign yourself and believe in his genetics.

Looking back on the 2023/24 Competition Season, what was your most memorable moment with Lyra Park Delt Me N Acre? Winning the Rookie Horse Champion 2024 at the ACA National Finals at Dalby.

What is something interesting about Lyra Park Delt Me N Acre that nobody knows? He’s definitely a character and always willing to go for a ride, he likes to carry his halter about and is very willing to open his mouth when the bridle is placed on.

How would you describe his personality? Delt is such a placid stallion and nothing phases him and very casual to have around our team of horses.

Can you tell me about Lyra Park Delt Me N Acre’s progeny? We have some beautiful progeny by Delt, nice types and he has carried over his long legs so looking forward to them...

He is special to us as he is out of homebred mare called Lyra Park Delta that the whole family rode and cherishes. ls there anyone that you would like to thank? Our team at home, without great help and support, our goals and achievements can’t be done… thank you!!!

Where to from here? Keep campaigning Delt Me N Acre and hope he can achieve as many outstanding achievements as possible and carry it onto his progeny.

JAYE HALL Q A

2023/24 Competition Season Teles One Moore Champion Lady Rider Competition Winner

What does a day in your life look like? There is a lot of variety in my days! I can be doing anything from mustering, shoeing horses, handling foals, scanning/breeding mares, office work, packing to go to a draft, sending bronzes, taking photos of horses, bulls or bronzes, cooking (not well!)

Can you please tell me about the first campdraft that you competed in? I can’t even remember the first one… would have been as a Mini on Red-Pepper at possibly either Saxby, Kynuna, Middleton, Sedan Dip or Julia Creek I would say.

Congratulations on winning the Teles One Moore Champion Lady Rider Competition for the 2023/24 Competition Season. What does it mean to you to win this award? I won this award twice a long time ago riding Lex and Reliable, so to win it again now with the help of Eltorrio and Calesi, amongst the best women drafters in the country is very humbling. I was also very proud of Madison and Ben winning their awards and to have the three of us up there in the one season was very special and possibly never been done before.

What did you most enjoy about the National Finals in Dalby? I had been in Brisbane for a few weeks with Wyatt having surgeries on his foot so to get out of the city and on a horse was nice.

What horses did you compete on at the National Finals? Eltorrio, Calesi, Cleverio, Eldorrio, Sayplay, Priority and Ario. How many drafts did you compete at in the 2023/24 Competition Season? A lot, all the normal ones.

What is the furthest distance that you travelled to attend a campdraft in the 2023/24 Competition Season? Warwick, about 1000 kilometres.

What is your most memorable achievement from the

Competition Season and why? Coming second to my Mum in the Ladies at Muttaburra Draft. Mum had just come out of cancer treatment and hadn’t drafted for twelve months and I was on Eltorrio and Madison loaned Ma Bushranger for the draft. I loved the horse before, but I loved him even more after it for the way he looked after Mum and she rode him like a champion too.

Looking back on the Competition Season, what horse are you most proud of and why? I am proud of all our horses when they go well. The young ones for stepping up and the old ones for keeping up.

What do you look for in a beast when selecting one for drafting? A quiet eye, something that moves away from you in the camp in a nice manner and doesn’t bury into the mob if possible.

Who are your role models in the campdrafting community? I love watching Madison, Laura McNaughton, Will Durkin and Hugh Miles and the horsemanship involved and then Madison’s sportsmanship and Laura’s dedication is to be admired as well.

What are three pieces of campdrafting advice that you would give to competitors at any level of competition? Watch someone you respect in their runs, go out around your cattle and make sure your horse is prepared for the draft.

Is there anyone that you would like to thank? Mum and Dad for their constant support, Madison and Patti for getting my horses ready for me while I was in Brisbane with Wyatt, Ben and Wyatt for always being interested to know how the weekend went.

Where to from here? Keep enjoying drafting while getting everything done at home in the meantime, making young horses and watching my family succeed in whatever they choose to do.

How many drafts did you compete at in the 2023/24 Competition Season? A fair few.

Who are your role models in the campdrafting community? My Mum, Dad and Grandfather and I enjoy watching John Mulcahy.

What are three pieces of campdrafting advice that you would give to competitors at any level of competition? Watch the good fellas, be kind to your horses and have fun.

How many drafts did you compete at in the 2023/24 Competition Season? Twenty four.

What is the furthest distance that you travelled to attend a campdraft in the 2023/24 Competition Season? Yaraka Campdraft.

What is your most memorable achievement from the Competition Season and why? Winning the Novice at Yaraka on Superact Shiraz. Winning the same Novice at Ridgelands on Kylandra Allie as the previous season. Being able to feel my feet properly since my accident in 2021 from my broken back.

Looking back on the Competition Season, what horse are you most proud of and why? That is a really hard one, the three horses that stand out the most are Superact Shiraz, Kylandra Allie and KNS Who Stole My Sock as they are improving all the time.

What do you look for in a beast when selecting one for drafting? The beast I would like to buy. A nice soft headed beast with soft skin.

Who are your role models in the campdrafting community? Peter Comiskey Senior, as a competitor and judge. He is always willing to help you and give advice. Mike Atthow as well.

What are three pieces of campdrafting advice that you would give to competitors at any level of competition? Be careful not to take your frustration out on your horse. Try to prepare your horse before competition eg. Travel without competing. If you can’t handle the pain of being cracked off early in your campdrafting, trust me the pain is still the same years down the track.

Is there anyone that you would like to thank? In any sport we need loyal friends and good competitors. Also, the clients who have trusted me with their horses to campdraft.

Where to from here? For Kerrie and I to enjoy our campdrafting sport together as long as we can.

ONE KNIGHT STAND Q A

2023/24 Competition Season Royalish Champion Novice Horse Competition Winner

Can you please tell me a little bit about One Knight Stand? One Knight Stand is 2015 born stallion by Warrenbri Romeo out of Amac Oaks Serena (Acres Destiny/Oaks Serene). He has been a very versatile and successful stallion. Showing in the ASHS ring he was a Royal Show and National Champion as a two/three year old. He then won three NCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity titles before going to the Challenge arena where he won a number of Challenges and was the ASCA Derby and Open Horse Title Winner. Since starting to draft, he has won seven drafts including five Open/ Restricted Opens since last June.

How many years has he been drafting? He started drafting in the 2022/23 season where he finished Runner Up in the Rookie Horse title. This season will be his third season.

How have you seen him improve throughout the 2023/24 Competition Season? Over this last year it has been good to see him become more seasoned and therefore being more consistent, especially in those bigger drafts. I think he has really found his groove so on the up for sure.

Can you please tell me about the first campdraft that One Knight Stand competed in? To be honest I can’t remember his first draft but I feel it may have been Paradise Lagoons two years ago. That venue has been great to him, he was third in the Super Beef last year and won the Rocky Open this year.

What was his first campdraft win? His first win was the Maiden at Middlemount, he won the cut out as well with a 24.

Congratulations on One Knight Stand’s win of the Royalish Champion Novice Horse Competition for the 2023/24 Competition Season. What does it mean to you to win this award? It has always been a goal to win an ACA title especially with a stallion. He was so close to the Rookie title last year, so we are very proud of him achieving the Novice title this year. He had a great year and it was fantastic to finish it on a high.

Looking back on the 2023/24 Competition Season, what was your most memorable moment with One Knight Stand?  He had a number of highlights throughout last season. Winning the highest aggregate over the Canning Downs and the Warwick Gold Cup was amazing, but I think when he broke his Open status winning the Clermont Gold Cup was the highlight. You always hope to have your stallion break Open and for him to do it at such a big Open we were over the moon.

What is something interesting about One Knight Stand that nobody knows?   When he won his first snafflebit cutting futurity he had only had forty days on a cow.

How would you describe his personality?  He is very loving horse. Along his journey he has always been willing to please. He just has a spark and charisma but is soft and kind at the same time.

Can you tell me about One Knight Stand’s progeny? His first foals are currently four which were a limited crop. His first major foal crop are three year olds and are looking very positive. They have been very successful so far in the ASHS and Nutrien Challenge System. We cannot wait for the next few years to see them get rolling.

What traits are you seeing One Knight Stand pass onto his progeny?  The progeny we have started have been very similar to him. Very good minded with and intent on a cow. They have a great personality and are very trainable with plenty of travel. We have been very happy with the demand for his progeny so far at all of the sales. I think it is a very positive sign for the future and his babies. We are very excited for the next few years to have some go through the challenge program then into the ACA like we did with him.

Why is One Knight Stand special to you and your family? OKS is one of my all time favourites, we have had some really nice horses but we just have a bond. He is special to us because he has always given his all and basically become part of our family.

Is there anyone that you would like to thank?  There is a lot of people to thank that have helped get OKS to where he is today. Firstly, Mark and Janelle from Kempsey Quarter Horses who bred him. Then everybody that was involved with him when he was here as a two and three year old. He then went to Josh and Danielle Smith who played a major roll in his four and five year old years. The last couple of years it has been Steve and Louise, they have given OKS the greatest of care and have been committed to the cause when it comes to doing the miles to get it done! But we wouldn’t be here without everyone that has played a part in his career. We will always be so grateful and thankful to call them part of the OKS family.

Where to from here? He will stay on the road drafting and hopefully be a part of ticking off some of the “bucket list” drafts for Steve, Louise and ourselves, and then watching his progeny follow on in the next few years.

Why is Conman special to you and your family? He’s been special to us since he was born.

Tribute to Dalby National Finals

At the 2024 National Finals Presentation Dinner, Peter Petty, recited his poem, Tribute to Dalby National Finals.

While we gather here in Dalby in 2024 At the National Final events, where Campdrafting is the core Rick and his committee have worked really hard

To keep this program going with a wet start and a muddy backyard Never the stress showing

All the crack riders are here From right across the land Even Russell Lawrence from Victoria has come to show his hand

The Hall’s are here with all their strength Three generations to boot They travel this land the length and breadth

Trying to win some loot

The Comiskey brothers, Pete and Steve Never fear the spill With Mum and Dad cheering them on And know they always will

The Dillon’s with their bright big silver rig The Right Hon. Member for Gregory Will be Sean’s next important gig

Rohan and Kerry from TurnerMarks Are here to chase one around They’ve travelled every lonely road And been to every ground

Rohan has worked hard to fly the flag

For that there is no doubt So we acknowledge him here for his hard work And give him a big fat shout

Mr Robert Daly, the new VP He has been anointed with the holy oil From Rohan, Sean and me

Mully’s here as well you know, to entertain the crowd We ride with him for every stride And we are getting loud First peg done and second too, and heading for the gate

Another big score for John Mulcahy, never fearing fate

Shep and Ed are having a spell They are pulling back on the reins

We thank them for their efforts and our many gains

So I will finish my verse So you can get back to your plate

But I will share with you, A piece left to me from an old mate

In the larger build of life

Let the shirkers stand aside

Make way for those that want to work

And those that dare to ride

The only one who is worth his place And risk a fall with fate

Is he who steals his gallant heart And rides his country straight.

Braeview Romulus, he’s back from injury and he is a bit of fun to ride.

What do you like most about her?  She’s super easy and very low maintenance.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for Spina Chick for the 2024/25 Competition Season? I have always wanted to go to Warwick so we will probably aim for that this year.

TROXEL CHAMPION JUVENILE RIDER COMPETITION

Get to know Ethan Ralston

Ethan is placing equal fourth in the Troxel Champion Juvenile Rider Competition

What has been your favourite campdrafting moment so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season? My favourite moment would be placing equal third with my brother, Aiden, in the Maiden Draft at the Australian Stock Horse Society Western Australia State Championships. We were also super stoked to be presented with a service fee to Townes Metallica from Chris and Sally Towne of Townes Performance Horses.

What horse are you most looking forward to competing on in this Competition Season and why? A little mare named My Special Duck, owned by Mack Hall, she is a soft and enjoyable horse that makes going from boarding school to a weekend away a much easier experience. I’m also looking forward to competing in my first draft on my three year old that I have started named, Alias Viking. He is lovely horse with loads of potential and I am really enjoying the challenge of making my own horse. What is one of your campdrafting goals for the 2024/25 Competition Season? Ride as many different horses as possible and listen to what they have to teach me, I really like the quote “There is always a lesson to be learned if you are willing to see it”, and I would love the opportunity to compete over east.

ONE MORE DADDY CHAMPION ROOKIE HORSE COMPETITION

Get to know Boons A Flame with Norma Shannon

Boons A Flame is placing first in the One Moore Daddy Champion Rookie Horse Competition What has been your favourite campdrafting moment with Boons A Flame so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season? This season has only just started so we’ve only been to a couple of drafts. At Blair Athol she placed third in the Novice and fourth in the Maiden. What do you like most about her? There’s lots to like. Her conformation – the moment I saw her I wanted her. She gives 100% every run. Unlike some mares that have off days when they’re in season she never has down days. She’s sweet natured and loves attention BUT she’s also a bit quirky and will walk out of the arena after a big run… and shy at a bale of hay. What is one of your campdrafting goals for Boons A Flame for the 2024/25 Competition Season? Just to give it her best shot. Realistically she won’t do as many drafts as other horses.

Get to know Jane Lee

Jane is placing equal fifteenth in the Teles One Moore Champion Lady Rider Competition

What has been your favourite campdrafting moment so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season? At the recent Balonne Branch Australian Stock Horse Show & Draft placing in the Ladies, Novice and Open drafts! Then winning the ‘Ken Rigney Memorial Working Horse’ on Bar None Confess. What horse are you most looking forward to competing on in this Competition Season and why? Bar None Confess (Browny), he just gives me the same every run! Thankful Cameron talked me out of selling him as a young horse!

What is one of your campdrafting goals for the 2024/25 Competition Season? Same goal for every year, just enjoy our success as well as our families‘ and friends’. We’re pretty lucky to be involved in the Campdraft community!

NUTRIEN EQUINE CHAMPION ASSOCIATE RIDER COMPETITION

Get to know Ella Hill

Ella is placing ninth in the Nutrien Equine Champion Associate Rider Competition

What has been your favourite campdrafting moment so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season? My favourite moment so far would have to be Goondiwindi Show Draft riding Remic, fourteen year old gelding, one of the first foals by Mantic out of Remodel, an Ocean Demise mare Dad had. We won the Jackpot Novice on an 89 and broke his Maiden status. That was pretty special. What horse are you most looking forward to competing on in this Competition Season and why? The horse I am most looking forward to competing on would have to be Play N Oak. Oakey he’s such a cool little horse, who has just started to put everything together. I am excited to see how it all plays out.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for the 2024/25 Competition Season? My campdrafting goals for this season are to start my five year old gelding, Scooby, he is the first embryo foal out of Jewel by Mantic. He will be the first horse I have started. I hope he turns out to be anything like his parents, I would be very happy with that.

ROYALISH CHAMPION NOVICE HORSE COMPETITION

Get to know Cedargrove Contiki with Matthew Dunn

Cedagrove Contiki is placing equal seventh in the Royalish Champion Novice Horse Competition

What has been your favourite campdrafting moment with Cedargrove Contiki so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season? Cedargrove Contiki has been performing very consistently this season. My favourite moment for Contiki is in one week she had six runs for six full courses on tough cattle and had to run off a cut out.

What do you like most about her? What I like most about Cedargrove Contiki is no matter how tough the cattle can be to put around outside, she gives you confidence that she will give everything to get through the gate.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for Cedargrove Contiki for the 2024/25 Competition Season? The campdraft goal for Cedargrove Contiki in the 2024/25 Season is to be leading the Novice Horse points in South East Zone at the end of the Competition Season and to break her open status.

CHAMPION MAIDEN RIDER COMPETITION

Get to know Emma McKey

Emma is placing tenth in the Champion Maiden Rider Competition

What has been your favourite campdrafting moment so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season? My favourite moment for this season so far would have to be, just being able to get back in the saddle to compete after having our son. The adrenaline and that little moment of freedom to have a run while dad does the babysitting. I’m sure all mums can relate!

What horse are you most looking forward to competing on in this Competition Season and why? Am I allowed to have two favourites? I don’t think I could choose between our two geldings, Kimlin Django and Digger. Both are consistent and going great this season, so I always look forward to competing with them.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for the 2024/25 Competition Season? To be honest, I haven’t really set any goals for campdrafting this season. I would really love to get to Warwick Gold Cup this year and have a run there. I’ve been itching to have a run there for as long as I can remember and it’s something I’ve never done.

What has been your favourite campdrafting moment so far in the 2024/25 Competition Season?

I’m pleased with the horses making second rounds, finals and placing at the championships at Dalby. What horse are you most looking forward to competing on in this Competition Season and why?

Ida (Hazelwood Flight Connect) because she helps me so much with my campdrafting and is the same everytime I ride her. She is magic.

What is one of your campdrafting goals for the 2024/25 Competition Season? My goals are to become a more consistent Campdrafter before I die!!!

Kate Southern competing on Arlee Flotus. Photography by Kate Jones Photography.

What do you like most about RS Chisum? He is such a gentleman, such great conformation, temperament and athleticism. What is something interesting about him that nobody knows? The breeder in United States of America was sad he was going to Australia as he assumed he would never be heard of again! Not the case! Where will RS Chisum be standing this upcoming breeding season? Hawkins Equine Breeding Centre, 1166 Nundle Road, Tamworth, New South Wales.
