On Sunday 1 June, the Catholic Churchwillobservethe59thWorld Day of Social Communications. The day is significant becuse ‘communications’ is an important and integral dimension of the Church. ‘Communications Day’ is one of the oldent ‘special days’ observance by the Church. The message for this year, was written by the late Pope Francis on the theme ‘Sharewithgentlenessthe hope that is in your hearts(cf.1 Pet3:15-16)’ In his message, Pope Francis sets the agenda of what communications should be today!
He makes a fervent appeal for ‘diarming communications’ saying among other things, “too often today, communication generates not hope, but fear and despair, prejudice and resentment, fanaticismandevenhatred.Alltoo oftenitsimplifiesrealityinorderto provokeinstinctivereactions;ituses wordslikearazor;itevenusesfalse orartfullydistortedinformationto sendmessagesdesignedtoagitate, provoke or hurt. On several occasions, I have spoken of our need to “disarm” communication andtopurifyitofaggressiveness. It never helps to reduce reality to slogans.Allofusseehow – from television talk shows to verbal attacksonsocialmedia–thereisa risk that the paradigm of
competition, opposition, thewillto dominate and possess, and the manipulationofpublicopinionwill prevail” .
He goes on to add, “Thereisalso another troubling phenomenon: what we might call the “programmed dispersion of attention”throughdigitalsystems that, byprofilingusaccordingtothe logic of the market, modify our perceptionofreality.Asaresult,we witness, oftenhelplessly, asortof atomizationofintereststhatends upunderminingthefoundationsof our existence as community, our abilitytojoininthepursuitofthe common good, to listen to one another and to understand each other’spointofview.Identifyingan “enemy”tolashoutagainstthus appearsindispensableasawayof assertingourselves.Yetwhenothers become our “enemies”, when we disregard their individuality and dignityinordertomockandderide them, wealsolosethepossibilityof generatinghope.AsDonTonino Belloobserved, allconflicts“start when individual faces melt away and disappear”. We must not surrendertothismindset.”
This message of hope, through
meaningful communication, comes at the time when the world is in greatturmoil:warsandconflict, hate and violence, lies and disinformation, facism and fanaticism, divisiveness and discrimination, demonisation and denigation, polarisation and prejudice, exclusivism and xenophobia- rule the roost! These painful realities, call the shots today! The space for truth and for standing up for what is right, for questionning and dissent is shrinking- particularly in counries ,that pride themselves to be ‘democracies’!
Pope Francis makes a fervent appeal, “try to promote a communication that can heal the wounds of our humanity. Make roomfortheheartfelttrustthat, like aslenderbutresistantflower, does notsuccumbtotheravagesoflife, butblossomsandgrowsinthemost unexpectedplaces.Itisthereinthe hopeofthosemotherswhodaily pray to see their children return fromthetrenchesofaconflict, and inthehopeofthosefatherswho emigrateatgreatriskinsearchofa betterfuture.Itisalsothereinthe
hope of those children who somehowmanageto play, laugh andbelieveinlifeevenamidthe debris of war and in the impoverished streets offavelas .” Communications today must be of hopeandofpeace!
Very significantly , on 12 May, addresing in the Vatican, representatives of the International media, Pope Leo XIV, reiterated the words of Pope Francis saying, ,I repeattoyoutodaytheinvitation made by Pope Francis in hismessageforthisyear’sWorld DayofSocialCommunications:let us disarm communication of all prejudice and resentment, fanaticismandevenhatred;letus freeitfromaggression.Wedonot needloud, forcefulcommunication, but rather communication that is capable of listening and of gatheringthevoicesoftheweak whohavenovoice.Letusdisarm wordsandwewillhelptodisarmthe world. In his address, Pope Leo also said, “Letme, therefore, reiteratetoday the Church’s solidarity with journalistswhoareimprisonedfor seekingtoreportthetruth, andwith thesewordsIalsoaskfortherelease oftheseimprisonedjournalists. The Church recognises in these witnesses–Iamthinkingofthose whoreportonwarevenatthecost oftheirlives–thecourageofthose whodefenddignity, justiceandthe right of people to be informed, becauseonlyinformedindividuals can make free choices.” He concluded his address saying, “You areattheforefrontofreportingon conflictsandaspirationsforpeace,

Indiaisstillrankedatapathetic151 out of 180 countries,in the World Press Freedom Index 2025 publishedearlyinMay.Theindex,in its India section, analyzes the state of media in the country stating, “India’s media has fallen into an “unofficialstateofemergency”since

Reliance Industriesgroup’smagnateMukesh Ambani,aclosefriendoftheprime minister,ownsmorethan70media outletsthatarefollowedbyatleast 800 million Indians. TheNDTVchannel’s acquisition at
theendof2022byGautamAdani,a tycoonwhoisalsoclosetoModi, signalledtheendofpluralisminthe mainstream media. Recent years have also seen the rise of “Godi media”(aplayonModi'snameand thewordfor“lapdogs”) – media outletsthatmixpopulismandproBJPpropaganda.Throughpressure andinfluence, theIndianmodelofa pluralistpressisbeingcalledinto question.Theprimeministerdoes notholdpressconferences, grants interviewsonlytojournalistswho arefavourabletohimandishighly criticalofthosewhodonotshow allegiance. Indian journalists who areverycriticalofthegovernment
are subjected to harassment campaignsbyBJP-backedtrolls” . What this impartial annual report states, is a fact about Indian media today! A fairly large section of media in India is spineless, totally godified! They spew out falsities and half-truths,platitudes and hollowness fed to them by their political bosses. Most of the media is owned and controlled by some corporatehouseswhichtoetheline of the ruling regime. The electronic media get their TRPs through debates indulging in shouting and shrieking with the anchors clearly ‘chamchas’ of the powers for obvious reasons. If any journalist daresthe‘stausquo’,itwouldmean the end of one’s career. Media, in general, is coopted and compromised and even prone to corruption. Many just ignore realities for fear of reprisals. Even the suffering of the people in Gaza does get the necessary coverage. Authenticity, objectivity,impartiality- just the plain truth is hardly on the radar of mostmediatoday!
One only has to look around to see what is happening in the country today:inBastarandinManipur, the
frequent attacks on the minorities particularly the Muslims and Christians, bulldozing the Muslims
and other poor from their homes andlands, lynchinginnocentpeople justbecusetheybelongtoanothert faith, the growing gap between the rich and poor, spiralling prices, unemployment crisis and unfullfilled job promises , wanton destructionoftheenvironmentand denial of human rights to vast sections of the population, the comunalisation and criminalisation of politics, the legitimization of corruption , lies and half-truths,and much more. No mainstream media hasthecouragetoconsistentlydeal with and to highlight these and other illswhichplaguetheordinary citizensofIndiatoday!
GiventheincisivemessagesofPope FrancisandPopeLeowithregardto communications and the grim realities of today, there are several serious challenges which Catholic communicators ( and in fact, all others)inIndiaface;theyinclude:
• to be in solidarity with all communiicators(including citizens who use social media to highlight facts) who are harassed , intimidated and even incarcerated for communicatingtruth (likeDr. Ali Khan Mahmudabad of the AshokaUniversity)
• to take a stand against every form of violence ,particularly hate and provocatove speecheswhichtendtodivide, denigate, polarise and manipulatepeople
• tobeavisibleandstrongvoice for the voiceless specially those who are victims of an unjust, brutal and revengeful system; particularly, the poor and the illitererate ,the minorities and the marginalised, the excluded andtheexploited, therefugees andthemigrants, theAdivasis, Dalits and OBCs,the small farmers and the casual labourers ,the slumdwellers
• the courage to speak truth to power: to communicate authentic information(without fear or favour) on injustices, war crimes, discrimination, violence, the mafiawhoplunderthecountry of our precious natural resources, rampantcorruption
and the homeless, the victims of trafficking, women and children, the LGBTQIA+ communities and all other vulnerablesectionsofsociety
• to protect and propagate Article 19 of the Indian Constitution which guarantees fundamental freedoms, primarilyrelatedtofreedomof speechandexpression, aswell as other rights like freedom of assembly, association, movement, residence, and profession; the right to disent andtoprotest
Aboveall, inaworldthatreekswith untruth, despair and is engulfed in darkness, communicators have a heavy responsibility of being bearersoftruth, hopeandlight!

"Historical Perspectives Illuminating Minds on Blue Waters"byPascalAlan Nazareth; Published by Konark Publishers; Pages 292; Price Rs.800/-. This bookisavailableonAmazon.in& Flipkart in hard copy & on Amazon.in in Kindle edition....
Ambassador Pascal Alan Nazareth ownsa magicalkaleidoscope which enables him to produce images of such a variegated colour and pattern that the viewer is simply captivated and stunned. Letmeunravelthemysteryandlend some clarity to my assertion about thetalentofthiswizard.introducing him and his earlier book---“A
Ringside Seat to History” which I had a chance to review. NazarethwasIndia'sAmbassadorto manycountriesandpost-retirement decidedtospendconsiderabletime tospread theessenceofGandhian ideology.
His earlier book “Ringside Seat to History; An Autobiography” is a charming and delightful account of hiscareerindifferentcountriesasa diplomat –rich with impressive stories and anecdotes. It is at once an entertaining and instructive memoir. It is the riveting autobiography of an ordinary young man, whose father earnestly wanted him to be a part of the coveted Indian Administrative Service, butthesongotselectedfor the Indian Foreign Service. This in fact, enabledhimtowitnesshistoric events at close proximity in several partsoftheglobeandwhatismore also play a role in some of them. Since retirement in May 1994, he has lectured at many prestigious institutions such as Universities of Benaras, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, Heidelberg, Uppsala and Peking. In2007,Nazarethwaspresentedthe U Thant Peace Award for his 'Life
Time of World Service'. Earlier distinguished recipients are Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela and DesmondTutu.
Nazareth has delivered International Day of Non-Violence keynoteaddressestotheUNinNew York in 2012 and UN Library in Geneva in 2017.The book under review “Historical Perspectives: Illuminating Minds on Blue Waters” is quintessence of a lifetime of scholarship and globetrotting diplomacy compressed into twenty precise lectures that sweep across five millennia, two continents, and all major world faith. The lectures were initially delivered to elite audiences aboard luxury cruise liners. Ambassador Nazareth’s lectureshavebeen —expandedand they send the readers on a
whirlwindtourfromtheIndusValley to Iberia, from Angkor Wat to Athens and from the Indian Ocean trade winds to the Napoleonic storm. In February 1995 Nazareth received a formal invitation from Radisson Seven Seas Cruises to deliver lectures on its Wellington (New Zealand-Southampton UK) Cruise and this started a new chapter of his lecture series on cruisecompleting35lecturecruises. `Historical Perspectives” is spread over292pagesdividedintwoparts: Part I is “Asia Lectures” and Part II “Europe Lectures”. Asia Lectures describe Understanding India, The Spiritual Heritage of India, The Mughal Contribution to India,

Cultural Heritage of China, Japan: The Sacred Isles and India, Britain andAmerica.
Europe Lectures are about The Great Naval Battles of the Mediterranean, The Greatness and Tragedy of Greece, The Olympic Games, The Legacy of Rome, The Rise and Fall of Venice, Portugal`s Three-Continent, Five-Century Empire, Spain, Europe and the World, Napoleon`s Impact on History, Ireland: The Emerald Isle and Islam and Europe. The book encapsulates the interesting histories and stories of the people and ancient civilizations across Eurasia and oceans beyond, the destructionofsomeeconomiesand cultures of different countries colonized by imperial powers, tales fromNapoleontoNippon.Nazareth covers personalities like Buddha, Confucius, Lao Tzu, Raja Ram
Mohan Roy, Mark Twain & Gandhi and offers a bird’s eye view of the intricate tapestry of humans across AsiaandEurope.
Nazareth links macro history in fewer than 300 pages with memorable micro-stories: a single Sumerian seal, a Venetian gallery, and a Gandhian spinning wheel. Theauthorweavesfirsthand anecdotes meeting statesmen, monks, and maritime archaeologists into the grand narrative. Nazareth has digested the best of the works of Will and Ariel Durant, Arnold Toynbee, Niall Ferguson and Yuval Noah Harari and presents us an admirable summary of their worksandsuperb quotes. Historical Perspectives endow the reader with an ability to comprehend and appreciate the commercial, cultural, and spiritual forces that have shaped our shared pastandwillensureourcollective

Religions, in their earliest and most organic forms, often emerge from the soil of collective storytelling.
These stories whether they be myth, legend, or oral traditionally originatefromrealevents, historical figures, or natural phenomena that, over time, become transformed through retelling. As they are passed down through generations, these narratives acquire layers of symbolism, exaggeration, and moral undertone. A local hero becomes a demigod; a great flood
becomes a divine judgment; an act of kindness becomes the seed of morallaw.
This mythologizing process is not merely a distortion but a kind of cultural crystallization. The community imbues these stories with meaning beyond the literal. Whatmighthavebeenasimpletale of survival becomes a narrative about divine will, cosmic justice, or human purpose. The characters in these stories—originally perhaps justinfluentialchieftains, mystics,or rebels—are gradually elevated into saints, prophets, or deities. Their motivations and actions are reinterpreted through the lens of evolvingvaluesandsocialneeds.
Over time, as these stories become foundational to a group’s identity, belief systems begin to coalesce around them. Thinkers, priests, and philosophers engage in repeated elucidation of the texts and characters, strivingtomakesenseof theimplications, contradictions, and moral lessons. What starts as narrative becomes theology: a
system of beliefs about the divine, the cosmos, and the human condition. Philosophy, too, arises from this matrix not in opposition to faith, but as an attempt to reconcile belief with reason, or to apply spiritual insights to questions ofethics, being, andmeaning.
Thus, religion evolves as a kind of cumulative cultural process: beginning with stories rooted in some truth, reshaped by imagination, nurtured by community, and refined through intellectual inquiry. Each step adds depth, abstraction, and structure, formingwhatwerecognizetodayas religious traditions with doctrines, rituals, moral codes, and metaphysical claims all branching out from those primal, powerful stories.
This organic evolution of religion from story to symbol, from myth to moralcodes, isnotmerelyacultural curiosity;ithasplayedacrucialrole in the survival and progress of human civilization. Far from being an incidental byproduct of early
imagination, religion emerged as one of the most effective tools Homo sapiens developed for social cohesion, cooperation, and continuity.
Beforetheinventionofreligionand structured belief systems, early humans lived in small, kin-based groups. Their lives were dominated byimmediate needs food, shelter, safety andtheirrelationshipswere governed by instinct and simple reciprocity. While language and toolmaking gave them certain advantages, theircapacityforlargescaleorganizationwaslimited.Trust and loyalty could extend only so far typically no further than blood ties.
But as stories became shared, and as myths took root in the collective memory, something remarkable happened: strangers began to act like kin. Shared narratives created shared identities. When groups believedinthesamecreationstory, revered the same ancestors, or feared the same gods, they
developed mutual trust—not because they personally knew one another, but because they believed in the same sacred truths. These beliefs bound them together, forming the basis for larger and morestablecommunities.
Religions helped encode moral behavior into everyday life. They offered frameworks for justice, compassion, sacrifice, and restraint virtues that allowed societies to function and expand.
The idea that one’s actions were being watched or judged by higher powers, or would have consequences beyond death, instilledasenseofaccountabilityfar more effective than tribal enforcement alone. Temples becamecentersnotjustofworship, but of administration, education, andlaw.
In this way, religion provided early humans with a structure for meaning and a system for living. It turnedchaosintocosmos notjust in the abstract, but in the practical.
It helped settle disputes, legitimize leadership, inspire art and architecture, and promote longterm thinking. People began to plant crops not just for seasonal survival, but as acts of devotion. They built monuments not just for glory, butasexpressionsofeternity.
In short, religion helped Homo sapiens move from surviving to thriving.
Over millennia, as religious ideas evolved, they became the bedrock upon which civilizations were built. From Hammurabi’s codeto the Ten Commandments, from Confucian ethics to Buddhist compassion, religious teachings laid down principles that shaped legal systems, governance, and interpersonal ethics. These systems encouraged stability, trust, and a sense of belonging—conditions necessary for technological, intellectual, andculturalprogress.
Indeed, even as modernity and science have reshaped our understanding of the world, the
foundational role of religion in human history remains undeniable. It is not that religion alone created civilization, but rather that religion providedtheearlyscaffoldingupon which civilization could be constructed. Without shared stories thatevolvedintosharedbeliefs, itis unlikely Homo sapiens could have achieved the levels of cooperation requiredtobuildcities, empires, and globalsystems.
Thus, religion born from stories, matured through myth, and institutionalized through theology served as a profound evolutionary adaptation. It was a cultural innovation that allowed humans not only to survive, but to flourish.Ithelpedtransformisolated tribes into interconnected societies, andprimitivelifeintoaprogressive, organized, and meaningful human journey.
As Homo sapiens stand at the thresholdofanewera—oneshaped not by stone or steam, but by information, biotechnology, and
artificial intelligence—our relationshipwithreligionandfaithis once again undergoing a profound transformation. With the expansion of scientific knowledge, and the ability to simulate intelligence, consciousness, and even aspects of life itself, many of the mythic structures that once anchored human societies are being reexaminedunderanewlight.
and even participating in creative andcognitiverealms, theexistential questions long held by religion return with greater urgency: What doesitmeanto behuman?Whatis our purpose in a world where intelligence is no longer unique to us? What values must guide us in a futurewhereourpowerexceedsour wisdom?
Modern understanding has demystified much of what earlier cultures once attributed to gods or fate. The heavens have been mapped, genomes sequenced, and minds modeled in code. And yet, this unraveling of ancient mysteries does not render religion obsolete. Rather, it reveals its deeper purpose—notasaliteralaccountof origins or laws of physics, but as a symbolic operating system for human meaning, morality, and collectivepurpose.
As artificial intelligence becomes integrated into daily life, shaping economies, mediatingrelationships,
Here, the original function of religion as a meaning-making mechanism becomes vital once more. Even if many faiths are now understood as mythologically constructed, their deeper role remains:tocreateamoralcompass, foster social cohesion, and elevate the human spirit toward a larger purpose. In this sense, religion evolves not to be discarded, but to be reinterpreted. The myths of old may give way to new metaphors, the gods of the past to new ethical frameworks, but the core function remains to remind us that we are part of something greater, and that ouractionsripplethroughtime.
This is the dawn of a new civilization one where technological power demands moral maturity. It is a phase of cultural evolution where religion, once born of folk tales and fears, maynowbeconsciouslyreimagined as a scaffold for sustainable, cooperative, and compassionate life. Not as dogma, but as dynamic wisdom. Not as supernatural decree, but as collective insight refinedovergenerations.
history but open to evolution—can helpguideustowardafuturewhere intelligence, empathy, and purpose converge. Where survival is not just about replication but about deepening the meaning of existenceitself.
In this ongoing process, humanity may begin to align more closely with the most enduring principle of all:thatlife, initsmanyforms, strives to continue.Religion, reframedasa life-affirming system—shaped by
In this sense, we are not at the end of religion, but at the beginning of itsnext chapter onenotwrittenin stone or scripture, but in shared human values, cosmic awareness, and a commitment to life’s continuation across time and form. The myths may change, but the need for meaning, connection, and transcendence endures. And through that enduring need, we continuetoevolve.

She's slipping away, before our eyes
One shaky step, one tired breath, at a time
The legs that marched to her orders
Now she feels drained of every fiber, carrying her weight
Life fragile life, how easily we play
When energy runs high with fires of desires
Strutting and flaunting our days we spend
Until that call comes and it must end
She's slipping away, before our eyes
This woman so fierce and fiery, now runs low
The breath that gave her life, now wears thin
Her strength once invincible, nowhere to be found
Life fragile life, how easily we play
Only to find it slipping away, every new day
May we learn to drop our weights for easy liftoff
And for those blessed with memory, make sure to top up

In 2022, Konkani cinema witnessed a thrilling fusion of laughter and chills with Allshi Redde - a bold comedy-horror movie brought by the visionary duo Godwin Sparkle and Hera Pinto. Directed by the leading pair themselves, the film was produced by Sparkle Productions and saw its release on September9,2022.
The film chronicles the journey of two fishermen and their families who live on opposite sides of a riverbank.Theirpeacefullivestakea dark turn when they discover a hidden treasure beneath the river. Driven by greed, they turn against each other, leading to tragedy. Decades later, history repeats itself, unfolding into a humorous and chaoticchainofevents.
Although AllshiReddestruggled to make a mark at the box office, its music told a different story. The film's songs, featuring voices of
acclaimed artists like Kunal Ganjawala, Mohit Chauhan, and Lavita Lobo, stood out for their creativity and emotional depth. While the narrative may not have resonated widely with audiences, the soundtrack left a lasting impression.
Here are the three songs from the movie, each representing a distinct musicalgenre.

Much like its inspiration, this nearly 4-minute-long song brings together a vibrant lineup of guest appearances. The track comes to life through the voices of an impressive ensemble, featuring Lavita Lobo, Melwyn Peris, Patrick Pereira, Wilma Pereira, Dixon Rodrigues, Elton Pinto, Palma Pereira, Rasha D’souza, and Patson Pereirahimself.
The second song, LagimYe , is a romantic gem sung by renowned Bollywood playback singer Mohit Chauhan alongside Lavita Lobo. The solenoid’s job is critical. Without precise magnetic confinement, fusion reactions would collapse before they even begin. ITER aims to demonstrate a tenfold energy return 50 MW in, 500 MW out by replicating the sameprocessthatpowersthestars.
